Frosty fire
Firefighters from east Wellington Volunteer Fire department put out an abandoned vehicle fire in the Maxey Road area Tuesday morning. A white Ford F-150 pickup truck was found in a ditch in the 2600 block of Maxey Road fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Recycling investment includes Nanaimo facility By ChrIs BUsh THe NewS BULLeTiN
Jobs and investment in Nanaimo are being touted from a proposed provincial paper and packaging recycling project. Multi-Material B.C., a nonprofit organization that will manage residential packaging and printed paper recycling, announced Thursday it selected Green by Nature EPR to manage a provincewide collection and recycling
program, which will start servicing about 1.25 million B.C. homes by May 19. The $32-million project is the result of a producer-pay system mandated by the provincial government and include construction of a material recovery facility in Nanaimo to sort and prepare collected material for shipment to processors and markets. Another major component of the project will be a container recycling and sorting facility on the Lower Mainland which

will separate paper products from plastic containers and packaging. About 570 people will be employed through the new recycling system. Green by Nature is a partnership founded by waste recovery and recycling companies Cascade Recovery, Emterra Environmental and Merlin Plastics. The consortium will also involve more than 20 recycling subcontractors for its operations across B.C. u See ‘FEW’ /5
There are ‘lots’ of possibilities to reduce city costs, from shuttering Beban Pool to cutting staff, says one Nanaimo city councillor heading into budget talks this week. As part of a new approach to financial planning, Nanaimo city council has been given the chance to consider 400 projects this week that have the potential to affect property taxes. According to city manager Ted Swabey, everything on the list is “all important” and part of capital planning to keep the city running, from contributions to asset management to road and sewer maintenance. The list also includes fire services equipment, police station staff and a new licence plate recognition system for parking that totals more than $97,000. The decision list is in front of council this week and while staff members are giving politicians the option to pick and choose, they also warn there will be implications if projects and services are not funded. The majority of items funded by taxes go toward maintenance and renewal of city infrastructure and by cutting back dollars there will be an effect on service levels and increased maintenance costs, a staff report reads. If the entire run of decision

packages are approved, Nanaimo faces a 2.8-per cent tax hike. Without any further additions to the budget, there will be a 6.1-per cent drop in taxes. Coun. Fred Pattje said while 2.8 per cent isn’t bad compared to other municipalities, council should still try every trick in the book to get the number closer to a cost-of-living increase. He’s keeping his cost-saving pitches for budget talks, but said if council doesn’t want to reduce asset management – a one-per cent tax increase – there are few alternatives other than to cut services. However, Coun. Bill McKay, who is aiming for no tax increase, questions if there are ways of reducing costs without slashing services, from looking at staff cuts and how protective services are paid for to consolidating city swim recreation at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre to save on maintenance and energy costs. The city has future costs to consider, including a new reservoir and regional district sewer treatment plant, and should look at tightening its belt now, he said. “I want to look seriously at our swimming pools. Do we need two swimming pools in Nanaimo or should we consider a new modern pool down at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre that replaces Beban,” he said, adding the pools cost every man, woman and child $45 a year to maintain. “I think there’s lots of possibilities for reducing costs – the question is whether or not there’s a will amongst my colleagues to do so.” u See ‘BUDGET’ /4

Fire prevention key for new chief I craig richardSoN takes over top position at Nanaimo Fire Rescue. By Chris Bush The News BulleTiN
Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s new chief plans to keep building on the foundation laid down by his predecessor. Craig Richardson, Nanaimo Fire Rescue’s former deputy chief of operations, said as chief he wants to continue to balance cost with the service provided by the fire department. “The next level is to strike that balance between efficiency and effectiveness,” Richardson said. “We’re obviously going to be facing some funding concerns in the future and in order to achieve the best value for the customer at the end of the day, we’re going to have to look at and explore innovative techniques and add more value.” Richardson said that will mean a stronger focus on prevention – keeping fires, injury incidents and other mishaps from happening in the first place. Fire calls are down overall and Richardson said he will be looking for ways to further lower those statistics. Fewer mishaps mean lower operating costs, not to mention fewer deaths and injuries, he said. Richardson, 46, was hired from Surrey Fire Services in 2005 for his skill set and outlook for Nanaimo’s long-term fire plan, which includes a combination of new fire stations, training and management. The plan, developed by former chief Ron Lambert, would evolve into an overall firefighting system based on
information from published results of scientific studies and real-world evidence, combined with a business approach to providing fire and safety services. Richardson, who holds a master’s degree in leadership and training from Royal Roads University, worked as a firefighter and trainer during a 15-year career with Surrey Fire Services where he taught everything from hazardous materials training and basic firefighting to fire officer and leadership programs. He also taught and was a consultant for fire departments across B.C. and internationally during that time. “There were some busy times there, let me tell you,” Richardson said. Nanaimo currently has 81 full-time firefighters and more than 50 on-call firefighters. One of the things Richardson wants to do as chief is build on the capacity and strengths of the people in the department to help achieve the long-term goal of providing more effective service as demands for types of service continue to change. “One of the thing I want to focus on in the future is the people in the department,” Richardson said. “With my experience ... I can say that the people we have in this department are some of the best I’ve worked with. They’re of the highest calibre and they have the potential to help us achieve those goals.” There will also be the challenge of staffing and equipping new fire stations to improve response times to areas such as Jingle Pot, Hammond Bay and Duke Point. Richardson said the approach will be to determine what the primary risks are in those areas, do what can be done
“

to reduce the risk and then develop a response force appropriate to the frequency and severity of risk types in those areas. “If everybody sits together and works on the problem together and they all have the same information, the answers are pretty clear,” Richardson said. “That’s the model I want to use moving forward for decision making, inclusivity and things like that.” photos@nanaimobulletin.com
Gourlay intends to seek NDP nomination Long-time political staffer Laurie Gourlay has announced his intention to seek the NDP nomination as federal candidate for the new Nanaimo-Ladysmith riding. Gourlay, a Cedar farmer, spent 12 years working for the federal NDP and six for his local NDP MLA before recently deciding to take the plunge into federal politics himself. This spring he’ll put his name forward when party members choose a candidate for the new riding. Gourlay believes strongly in the value of community service, some-
thing first instilled in him as a youth. Over the years he has volunteered for a number of causes and sees entering politics as a way to further serve the public. He believes that politicians should work together despite their different ideologies to better the lives of their fellow Canadians. He points to the closure of libraries and veterans’ offices, the “creeping privatization of healthcare” and the firing of government scientists as examples of current issues in Canada.
evolve 2014
Last year Gourlay made waves when he and Scott Akenhead began a petition that would see Vancouver Island become a separate province. While it’s a concept Gourlay still believes in, he said he’s not focusing on it right now and will take his cues from the people he hopes to represent. In the spring, when the NDP is expected to choose its candidate, Gourlay will find out if he’ll have the chance to take that message to Ottawa. – Black Press

Four-year terms add up to serious commitment By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
Impending legislation that could increase municipal politician terms to four years from three isn’t having a bearing on whether Nanaimo or Lantzville’s mayors will seek re-election. John Ruttan, mayor of Nanaimo and Regional District of Nanaimo director, said he hasn’t decided if he will run this November but he would like to be in office when two pet projects come to fruition – the conference centre hotel and the foot passenger ferry to Vancouver. “They’re progressing along and if by the summertime, if we have commitments on one or both, I think that would certainly make it easier for me to run one more term ... I’d like to be the mayor when those services are initiated. I think one more term would do it,” Ruttan said. Lantzville Mayor Jack de Jong, also a regional district director, is also undecided at this point but said four years is a long time. “I’m 76, so I’m getting on so the commitment now is quite a commitment ... and I’m looking at RDN directors and many of them are in their 60s and so the commitment they make now is a very significant portion of their remaining life,” de Jong said. De Jong said it might be difficult for younger politicians, too. “ Yo u n g e r p e o p l e that make the commitment for a three-year term, generally they’re employed and working and so to right up front say, ‘I’m committing myself for four years to a fairly significant workload,’ may be problematic,” said de Jong. “It
may cause some people to think twice before putting their name out for councillor.” Ruttan agreed, saying four-year terms might prove challenging for those entering politics, particularly younger politicians. “To take on a four-year commitment, which requires a lot of evenings, a lot of weekends and obviously a lot during the day, is something [young politicians] may be reticent to do,” Ruttan said. “Three years, well they might say, ‘I’ll try it and see if I can do it for three years.’ Four years, they might say, ‘Whoah, maybe not right now but maybe later.’” Adam Hawryluk, president of Young Professionals of Nanaimo, said the organization sees the value of having the younger generation represented. Members have run for office in the past, such as Chris Cathers and current Nanaimo Coun. George Anderson, and there are positives and negatives to four-year terms. It is a tough call, according to Hawryluk, as longer terms allow for young politicians to learn what they’re doing and get their feet wet. “At the same time, that long of a commitment for it can be a deterrent. Life changes happen in a hurry, especially at our age and our demographic,” Hawr yluk said. “There’s definitely ups and downs.” The provincial government recently announced legislation to extend municipal terms to four years will be introduced during the current sitting of the legislature. If passed, elections would be held in November of this year, then in 2018. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Budget talks continue u From /1 The City of Nanaimo launched its new budget process last fall, which gives politicians a greater role in building the budget. Now, city council has been given the task of deciding where to draw the line on taxes. The list of 400 decisions has been prioritized by city staff members, but there is the ability for councillors to add initiatives they feel are a priority. McKay wants to look at the size of the city’s workforce and ‘unbridled increases in funding to protective services.’ It could mean considering the fire services’ integrated risk management plan more seriously and giving the RCMP a firm budget. “Whenever protective services seem to come to us we, for whatever reason, give them exactly what they are looking for,” he said. “Do we need a force as large as we have?” The effect of decisions will be shown to council during day-long budget sessions. The first meeting happened Wednesday.

lions Club fundraiser improves house signs
I
improvEd viSibility aids rescue crews. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN
The Hub City Lions are ensuring residents adhere to a City of Nanaimo bylaw re q u i r i n g v i s i b l e street addresses. Business owners and residents are required to have address numbers that can be seen from the street and contrast with the colour of the surface they are attached to, according to the city’s bylaw. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they are visible at night and to remedy this the society is selling reflective signs as both a community service and a fundraiser. “The motto is, ‘If [first responders] can’t find you, they can’t help you.’ The RCMP, ambulance and
fire have all endorsed this program,” said Peter Thomas, longtime Lion and society secretary, adding that in an emergency situation, a visible address could mean the difference between life and death. It is something echoed by Karen Lindsay, emergency program manager for the city. “The reason we require them is, for emergency purposes, time is of the essence when we’re looking, as far as response goes,” said Lindsay. “So the more visible the numbers are, the easier it is for us to find you and it facilitates improving our ability to get to you faster.” The Lions society will be at Nanaimo North Town Centre every Saturday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., selling the signs for $40 and a maximum of five numbers can adorn the sign – the letters A, B, C
and D are available as well. “The material now is exactly the same as road signs ... they’re in blue, they’re [15 by 46 centimetres] and the [characters] people want to put on them are [7.63 cm],” Thomas said, with 7.63 cm being the minimum height of address numbers in the bylaw. The numbers or letters can be arranged horizontally, vertically and on either side of the sign plate. “The numbers go on separate onto the plate,” Thomas said. “There’s four holes drilled, two at the top, two at the bottom and we supply the stainless steel screws.” Having a visible address is not only beneficial to emergency services but to people who deliver take-out food, according to Thomas. “People don’t like cold pizza,” he quipped. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Charity work viewed first-hand I PAxIE VrEEDE heads to Africa with stephen lewis Foundation. By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
A Nanaimo grandmother is touring Africa this week to see Canada’s charity dollars at work. Paxie Vreede, a member of Nan Go Grannies, is one of 22 Canadians chosen by the Stephen Lewis Foundation to travel to Africa and see first-hand how fundraising dollars have helped the fight against AIDS. The foundation and its grandmothers-to-grandmothers campaign have been collecting donations to help African grandmothers raise their AIDS-orphaned grandchildren since 2006. In Nanaimo alone, more than $100,000 has been generated for the cause. Vreede, a retired family physician, hopes to be an ambassador for contributors while in Africa, listening to the stories of progress and need from local grandmothers. She left Friday for a threeweek tour of Ethiopia, Rwanda and South Africa. “I’m looking forward to ... actually seeing with my own eyes how these projects actually function and what the African grandmothers have to tell us about how their lives are different now compared to five or six years ago before their support started,” she said, prior to her departure. Vreede will be travelling to see grassroots initiatives paid for through the foundation, from a women’s network that helps people grapple with the aftermath of genocide to income-generating projects. She said she’s very excited about the potential life-changing experience and plans to share

Nanaimo Design Nerds keen to open co-working space By Tamara Cunningham The News BulleTiN
With yoga at lunch, barbecues in the courtyard and desks for rent, Nanaimo’s new co-working hub won’t be your typical office space. In fact, the entrepreneurs behind the idea are counting on it. “It provides a model that doesn’t exist yet,” said Monica Shore, a director of Nanaimo Design Nerds, the group behind the city’s new ‘funky’ co-working space for creative professionals. The design nerds aim to bring the metropolitan trend of co-working ‘hives’ to the Harbour City this June, when they open their first co-working hub for creatives like architects, designers and not-forprofits. It’s the second of its kind in the works this year. Innovation Island and the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation plan to open a co-working space for the tech industry and are currently searching for a space large enough to meet the demand. The idea behind the Nanaimo Design Nerds’ new space is all about offering entrepreneurs a chance to leave the isolation of basement offices and coffee shops for work environments where they can grow their business, build community and share ideas with those in similar professions. The design nerds say their project will give people the perks of an office space, with a board room, mailbox and lounge – but with affordable prices and extras that could range from a courtyard with barbecues and yoga sessions to a licensed space for after-work parties. People will also have the choice to buy membership packages or pay for shortterm ‘hot desks’ if they are only in the area on business temporarily.
According to Shore and Jackie Duys-Kelly, also a director with the Nanaimo Design Nerds, the space will also be connected to Vancouver’s Hive coworking space and 90 others across Canada, not only facilitating travel and potential work excursions, but giving creative professionals a reason to stay and develop businesses in Nanaimo. “We are really about connecting people in the community,” said Duys-Kelly. “We are stuck in our basement or we are stuck in our attic or we sit on our computer in this lonely little space and try to be as efficient and effective as we can when really studies are showing ... interaction with people is the most profitable and beneficial way to advance your business.” The co-working space is still in development, but would open in the Painted Turtle Guesthouse in downtown Nanaimo. Nanaimo Design Nerds are searching for sponsorships to help pay for the $50,000 cost of building the space and plan to host ‘jellies’ – simulated coworking sessions – to highlight the experience and generate ideas on what people would like to see in the hub. Sasha Angus, chief executive officer for the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, calls it a great idea and doesn’t believe it will compete with his organization’s tech hub. “We need multiple venues and opportunities for folks to grow their business,” he said, adding co-working spaces tend to eliminate barriers for startup businesses and foster spaces where entrepreneurs can “feed off each other’s energy.” The first jelly will be held at the Vault Cafe, 499 Wallace St., March 17 from 9:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Residents need new cell tower
Nanaimo city council obviously has some hang-ups about cellphone towers. Council made the wrong decision two weeks ago when it voted against a proposed Telus cellular tower along Hammond Bay Road. The neighbourhood’s cellphone users have had dead-zone difficulties for ages, and we’ve heard concerns that even the city’s emergency services run into communications challenges in that part of town. Mayor John Ruttan said his main concern about the tower was its proximity to schools. That suggests he and his peers on council were swayed by fears that this cell tower would radiate harm upon the land. No, that’s the Dark Tower of Mordor that does that. Health Canada’s safety code is continually reviewed and updated. Telus’s tower would have been completely to code, meaning the radiofrequency electromagnetic energy emitted would have been considered safe exposure. Even a small child situated next to the tower 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year would experience no known adverse health effects. We’ve had a lot of years to study this radiation now and better understand what’s harmful and what isn’t. And that old brown microwave you had in the eighties didn’t give you a tumour – it never even gave you a headache. If this issue is strictly about keeping our kids safe, then we’re better off with a cell tower than without. If a child is trapped in a burning house or an overturned sport-ute, let’s trade a couple of radio waves to be able to make that 911 call. City councillors should act on behalf of the citizens, and if the majority of Nanaimoites are scared of cell towers, then maybe we really can’t build them. We’re scared of heights, though, too, and scared of the dark and monsters under the bed. Are any of these fears rational? The next time someone wants to build a much-needed cell tower in Nanaimo, let’s make the right call. Conventional wisdom on this is that the mining company didn’t try hard enough to establish a working relationship with the Tsilhqot’in. For his part, Taseko CEO Russell Hallbauer says the chiefs refused to meet with him, which isn’t surprising from a group that doesn’t recognize the B.C. forests ministry either. Here’s a sample of the volume of evidence that may determine the future of B.C. Archeological studies presented at trial describe “18 roasting and/or pit depressions” at Teztan Biny. It’s not clear if these were for seasonal food preparation or for pit houses, which would indicate a more permanent settlement at the lake. Nor is it clear whether these “cultural depressions” have been identified as being of Tsilhqot’in origin. Oral histories are also uncertain. Tsilhqot’in witnesses testified that Teztan Biny has been used in the 20th century as a hunting and fishing camp. The mine was rejected due to ill-defined cultural as well as environmental concerns. City ill-prepared for snowfall To the Editor,
Once again we have snow and no workable plan to handle it. The city has a bylaw that requires homeowners to clear their sidewalks. This is to save money and at the same time absolve the city of any liability if someone slips on a sidewalk. However, the city seldom enforces this bylaw since it would never stand up in court. That’s because city plows pile snow from the road onto the sidewalks. What is the homeowner supposed to do with this mountain of snow? If you enact a bylaw you should not turn around and make it impossible for homeowners to comply with it. Let us come up with a workable solution, that does not involve impossible bylaws, before somebody gets seriously hurt. The only honest interpreta-

tion of Nanaimo’s current policy is they just want to ignore the problem and wait for spring.

To the Editor,
Well, the city has to do some thinking on this one. The graders do a wonderful job of keeping the roads clear for auto traffic, but
Lantzville getting bargain on Nanaimo’s water To the Editor,
Re: Sharing water is neighbourly, Editorial, Feb. 27. Nanaimo taxpayers have shelled out hundreds of millions of dollars constructing dams and reservoirs, supply mains and piping, water pumping stations and treatment plants so we can open a tap. This year alone we’re digging deep into our pockets to pay for a water treatment plant on South Forks Road. So what are we getting from Lantzville for all our groundwork? Lantzville will pay Nanaimo the same water rate that you and I pay. It’ll contribute a paltry sum of money to the Port Theatre and join the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, after refusing to do so until enticed by water. So it’s Nanaimo taxpayers who are
really footing the bill for pretty well everything. So please forgive me when I hear some carefree Nanaimo councillors and this newspaper yammering, it’s neighbourly and makes good business sense to give Lantzville our water. It does not make any sense to the generations of Nanaimo taxpayers who’ve been busting their butts to pay their taxes and build a water system from scratch for over a century – which Lantzville is now being given for a mere drop in the bucket.
Kevan Shaw Nanaimo
To the Editor,
Re: Nanaimo councillors approve water deal, Feb. 27. So council has green-lighted water from our tax-paid new system to go to Lantzville. A whole new system at our
expense, and we’ll likely be on water restrictions again. This council continues to spend on frivolous things like arts, special-interest groups, sports and dog parks, raising everyone’s taxes to please a few. Meanwhile they do nothing for the original town sites and south-end infrastructure until they literally are forced to. Their bread is buttered in the north end where they do business for votes.
Neil Saunders Nanaimo
To the Editor,
Re: Nanaimo councillors approve water deal, Feb. 27. Thanks Nanaimo! My taxes won’t go up as much in Lantzville, but yours likely will, now that a majority of your councillors have voted to give us your water at the same cost you pay. And this
naive gift comes after all of you have paid through the nose for decades building reservoirs and dams, your water treatment plants and your infrastructure that leads to our door. And you’re giving us your No. 1 resource even though experts say Nanaimo will run out of water in just six to 10 years. Lantzville will now be able to reap the rewards and a gigantic amount of extra property tax, since we’ll be able to supply your water to a bunch of new developments that we would not have been able to do without your foolhardy giveaway. Nanaimo ratepayers cannot seem to win with the decisions of the current Nanaimo city council, but others municipalities sure can.
R.C. Stearman Lantzville
what about the foot traffic in Nanaimo? Children use the sidewalk to get to and from school, as well as pedestrians using it to get to the mall. With so much traffic on this street and the sidewalk being so unusable it is sad to see people walking on the road, and cars are having to go around the them, making it very dangerous for people walking, and cars coming in the opposite direction. Some people walk on the opposite side of the road, on the narrow shoulder, which also makes it hard for drivers to get around them. The city planners have to sit down and make a drastic change in our emergency programs before someone gets killed. I stand at my window and watch the close calls every day in this weather.

Premier’s blunders cannot be ignored To the Editor,
Can someone please explain to me how and why the B.C. Liberals are supporting the continuing and ongoing blunders of Christy Clark? Does anyone, really believe there will be a single LNG plant in B.C. before Clark collects her bloated pension? Hardly matters if she doesn’t run again or is unceremoniously dumped, she won’t see one! Will the last one to leave B.C. please turn out the lights.

Couple arrested for multiple thefts on the Island arrested, Peake and Denis-Reid were in possession of a quantity of stolen identification. Since the arrests, investigators from Victoria Police Department and RCMP in Ladysmith, Nanaimo and Oceanside collaborated to bring forth charges against the suspects that include possession
of stolen property, fraud, personation, passing forged documents (writing fraudulent cheques) and fraudulent use of credit cards. Investigators allege Peake and Denis-Reid hired people to break into cars and steal items, specifically wallets, which were stripped of credit cards and ID and used to
open bank accounts. They would forge cheques, deposit them in ATMs and withdraw the cash, police allege. During a court appearance Tuesday, Peake was held in custody until his next court date on March 20, while Denis-Reid was released. Her next court date is April 1. ST OF THE CI BE E

A joint investigation by Nanaimo and Gabriola RCMP detachments has led to the arrest of a 45-year-old Gabriola man who allegedly used a stolen credit card at a Nanaimo gas station. Oliver Petersen entered the Mid Island Co-op gas bar on Victoria Crescent Feb. 20 and allegedly used the credit card to buy merchandise. Petersen was seen on video surveillance using the card and identified by investigators. The card was stolen during a break and enter of a Gabriola Island home on Feb. 19. Petersen was arrested Feb. 25 and charged with possessing and using a stolen credit card. He is being held in custody until his next court appearance Tuesday (March 11). “This is a perfect example of the two detachments working together to put offenders behind bars in an efficient and timely manner,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, spokesman for Nanaimo RCMP, in a press release. The detachments often share similar files and resources. Nanaimo RCMP auxiliary police officers have assisted for several years with crowd control during an annual music festival on Gabriola Island. During emergency issues requiring additional personnel, Nanaimo RCMP can have resources on the island within an hour, often utilizing Nanaimo Harbour Patrol. “This file came together quite nicely as a result of the ongoing cooperation between our two detachments,” said Cpl. Markus Muntener, Gabriola detachment commander. “By removing this prolific offender from the island, residents should see a significant decrease in their already low crime rate.”

ties when they don’t know who the instructors are, what the classes include and who is participating, adds Husband, who says the open house is a good
introduction. The free event will be at the Bowen Park Activity Centre, March 18 between 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Door prizes will also be available.

Naomi MacINNES October 22, 1922 ~ February 27, 2014 Our mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 27th at 91 years of age. She was one of five siblings born in England and made her way to Vancouver with her family at a very young age. There she found and married her true love (William “Bud MacInnes) and they spent many years skiing Hollyburn Mountain. After serving her country as a WAC, they married in 1944 and settled down in North Vancouver to raise their four children; Kevin, Wayne, Fiona and Stuart. Work took them to Mississauga, ON for 10 years where they were part of the ski patrol at Osler Bluff. Returning to Vancouver they split many years skiing Whistler and enjoying life by the water in Nanoose Bay. They moved to Nanaimo for their final years, with Dad passing away in late 2005. Mom enjoyed her last years at The Terraces playing Crib, Poker and Scrabble with her many friends. 106775 She leaves behind her four children, nine grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. We will miss her dearly and hope that she is reunited with her special love again.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to NRGH Hospital Foundation for the Palliative Care Unit. A celebration of her life will be held at The Terraces clubhouse, 6301 Redonda Place, Nanaimo on Saturday, March 8th, Noon until 4 pm. Sands ~ Nanaimo (250)753-2032

22 December 1986 - 23 February 2014 It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Cale on Feb. 23rd in Nelson. He is survived by his loving parents, Linda & Keith; brother, Tyler (Cassandra); niece, Arya; love of his life, Morgan, and adored daughter, Nova; loyal dog Kai; grandparents, Ed & Helen Taylor, and many family and dear friends. Cale was born in Nanaimo and raised in Cedar, with big brother Tyler. After graduating, Cale worked at a ski hill before pursuing his journeyman millwright ticket. He loved working with his hands, whether at work, on trucks with Tyler, or renovating the nursery for his baby girl. He was in his element outdoors: skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking, climbing and trail running. It was his millwright training and love of the outdoors that brought him to Nelson in early 2011, where he fell in love with the Kootenays and his fiance Morgan. Their beautiful daughter Nova was born in Dec. 2013. He was so happy and proud to be a dad, and such a devoted partner and father. His joy for life was immense and his sense of humour contagious. Cale was taken far too soon, while out in the mountains doing what he loved. We will miss your big grin and bigger heart forever. Your kind and adventurous spirit will live on in your daughter and in all our hearts. We love you Cale. A Celebration of Life will be held in Nanaimo on Monday, March 10, 2014, at 3:00 p.m. at the Nanaimo Golf Club, 2800 Highland Boulevard, and in Nelson at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any of the following: In trust for Nova Jack (at any Coastal Community Credit Union branch on Vancouver Island, membership number 758085, cheques payable to “Nova Jack In Trust For), Nelson Search and Rescue, Kootenay Climbing Association. Online condolences may be expressed at www.thompsonfs.ca Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Thompson Funeral Service Ltd.

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To the young man who paid for my plant. You made my day. I will pay it forward. There are still gentlemen out there.
BEEF To all the automotive dealers who sell too many vehicles without turn signal lights that work. Either that or too many buyers do not purchase the option.
BEEF To the poor driver who did a hit and run on my blue Honda Civic at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital’s main parking lot on March 3. I wish you the same – and some driving lessons.
BOUQUET To Quality Foods Beban Plaza. Your support of the Nanaimo Ladies Curling Bonspiel Sunday breakfast was much appreciated.
BOUQUET To the kind, caring and compassionate staff at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital fifth floor for taking such good care of our dad Ted on his final days here on Earth. BEEF To those who host public meetings but do not speak loudly enough for everyone to hear. Also, if a question is asked by someone near the front it should be repeated by the host so that all can feel involved in the discussion. BOUQUET I am overwhelmed by the acts of kindness from the whole staff at Great Canadian Oil Change on Metral Drive. Leaving the car wash, we noticed a flat tire. The spare tire was also flat so the owner took them both to get fixed. BEEF To Nanaimo school district for sending their top administrators on a conference. Don’t they know that we are already over budget? BOUQUET To the sidewalk snow shovellers. For some of us you make neighbourhood walks possible. BEEF To all the inconsiderate people who didn’t bother to shovel the sidewalks in front of their homes or business along Departure Bay Road. Three schools are located within a few kilometres of each other and the sidewalks provide a major walking route for school children. BOUQUET To the person who wrote the beef on the snow-shovelling bylaw. I thank you as I am one of the people who has to walk on the road.
BEEF To potential landlords who miss out on great, clean, on-time rent paying tenants, by having a no pets/smoking policy. You miss out on having some very good tenants. Just because we have animals and smoke does not mean were a detriment to the property. BOUQUET To Mandie Barker at Target store for her very nice attitude to the customers. BEEF To the driver of the Hummer who honked at the person in the Jeep because she stopped at the crosswalk for us in front of Rock City Elementary School. This winner then proceeded to give me, my wife, and six-month-old baby the finger.
friendly and patient explaining plans and options to my daughter and I. A special thank you to Sarah who went above and beyond the call of duty to arrange the transfer of my daughter’s phone to my plan.
BEEF To the person who shot the Canada goose multiple times. You could have done the community a much better service if you had shot multiple Canada geese one time each. BOUQUET to the Nanaimo Regional Hospital emergency and ICU staff. What could have ended in a tragedy became a life-saving experience for me. Words are insufficient to express my gratitude to Dr. N. Rogers, Dr. Patterson and Dr. Silva along with all the nursing and support staff. BEEF To all service stations that charge for air for tires. We pay for water, now air. BOUQUET to Houle Electric for the wonderful auto safety kit that we won at the Home Show.
BOUQUET To the two Good Samaritans, a young lady walking her dog and a gentleman who came to our aid on Cypress Street when we got stuck on the ice. BEEF To the neighbour who smokes like a chimney on his deck in the early morning hours and coughs and hacks because the lungs are jammed. Have some respect for the people who are sleeping at 5 a.m. BOUQUET To the person who found and returned my purse from the buggy that I left in the parking lot at Thrifty Foods at Brooks Landing. BEEF To those who don’t shovel their walks. I complained to the clinic and they looked at me stupidly. People need to get some grits.

BEEF To the business that, for the second time, put my phone number on their online special. I don’t know what to do to make you understand how difficult it is for a handicapped senior to be getting calls from 8 a.m. on. BOUQUET To Candace Slater, who’s not only my lovely niece, but such a good friend. With wisdom far beyond your years, you’re always a positive inspiration and I am so grateful for you. Relatives by chance, friends by choice. BEEF To the person who agreed to buy a brand new $900 TV from a fixed income couple for $400, then arrived to pick it up and paid only $350. Volleyball season reaches culmination I VIU WOMEN’S team in Toronto for nationals.
Clips lose first game of playoffs
BY GREG SAKAKI
BY GREG SAKAKI
THE NEWS BULLETIN
THE NEWS BULLETIN
One of the things about being a powerhouse program is that nationals are always a part of the plan. So the Vancouver Island University Mariners women’s volleyball team should be prepared – they’ve been planning for this all along. “It’s not just a oneweek preparation for nationals. It’s an entire season getting them ready,” said Shane Hyde, coach of the M’s. They’ve achieved goals along the way to reach this stage. VIU’s women finished first in the Pacific Western Athletic Association, then won a provincial championship a week and a half ago. Now they’ll take on the best college competition in the country starting today (March 6) at Seneca College in Toronto. VIU starts with a match against the Mount Saint University Mystics at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. Hyde said the coaching staff will have a game plan, make some tweaks, call timeouts at the right time and make player substitutions when need be. Other than that, the coaches will essentially let the Mariners loose.
Playing well wasn’t enough to win Game 1, but the Nanaimo Clippers will keep at it. The city’s B.C. Hockey League club dropped the opener of its best-ofseven playoff series with the Powell River Kings by a 3-2 score on the road Tuesday. Nanaimo jumped to a 2-0 lead midway through the first period on goals from Mason Mitchell and Devin Brosseau, but Powell River tied it up by intermission. A goal midway through the second held up as the winner even though the Clippers pressed to try for a tying goal. Shots were 33-30 for the home team, with Jayson Argue making 30 saves for Nanaimo. “It was a good game. We were really happy with how our team played,” said Dave Johnston, assistant coach. “We worked hard, we played a very structured game, we just unfortunately didn’t get the result … The only thing we’re disappointed in is that we didn’t win.” GAME ON … Game 2 was Wednesday after press time. Game 3 will be Friday (March 7) at 7 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena and Game 4 will be Saturday, also 7 p.m. at Frank Crane.

Vancouver Island University Mariners player Tylar Turnbull digs the ball during the last practice of the season at the VIU gym on Monday afternoon. The team is in Toronto for the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association championships.
“Now it’s almost the time to let the reins off and say, ‘Our job as coaches is done. Let’s see what you’ve got.’” What the Mariners have got is an all-starladen lineup. At the PacWest championships they showed their versatility, too, with different players leading the charge. “That was probably one of the best things that could have hap-
pened to us, because now we really know the depth of our team and we’ll see what we can do with it,” said Tylar Turnbull, VIU middle. She, Megan Groenendijk and Ashley Cousens were all-stars at provincials and VIU also boasts league all-stars Leanna Gildersleeve, Ashley Van Acken, Alyssa Wolf and other contributors. The coach said the
group seems to have a lot of the right attributes. At this stage of the season, Hyde said, experience is big, but so too is mindset and determination. He pointed out that one of the other favourites in the tournament, the Red Deer Queens, are just as good as the Mariners, if not better. “So it comes down to who’s got that little extra push,” Hyde said.
Groenendijk said the Mariners proved some of their mettle with their performance at provincials. “We had that extra tenacity to not let the ball drop, to try 100 per cent for everything,” she said. “Just hit that little bit harder, celebrate that little bit louder … Every point’s just a little bit closer to your end goal.”

Mariners bring extra tenacity u From /20
The Mariners will go step by step, facing unfamiliar opponents, all champions of their own leagues. Megan Groenendijk said it can be scary taking on an unknown team, but at the same time it can be helpful because it forces the M’s to bring their A game and brace for the match. It’s time for the VIU Mariners to see what they’ve got, in other words. “Our team’s skill and
the way we play volleyball has already been determined. We already know how to play volleyball,” Tylar Turnbull said. “Now it comes down to, can we come together? And can we find it within ourselves and within the team to pull through?” COURT SHORTS … All matches at the Canadian Colleges’ Athletic Association championships will be webcast live at www.ccaa.ca.

Jimmy Lapointe went a long time between major competitions, but now he’s got a lot to fight for. The purple-belt athlete is one of three Nanaimoites who will be participating in the Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship next week in Irvine, Calif. Lapointe, Shane Malone and instructor Robert Biernacki will make up the Island Top Team contingent at the Pan-Ams, the second-largest jiu-jitsu tournament in North America. “It’s been something that’s been on my to-do list for a long time, to go and compete again at a big tournament,” Lapointe said. “If you’re going to do a tournament, go big.” He finished fourth at the event in 2007, the same year he won a bronze medal at worlds, and he’s kept up his jiu-jitsu all along but hasn’t had a chance to hit the mats in competition. Now, leading up to the PanAms, which start Wednesday (March 12), he decided to make the most of the opportunity and fundraise for the Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre. “It gives me a whole new level of motivation to compete because it’s not just me I’m competing for,” he said. “I’m competing to help out men, help out dads.” Lapointe said the cause became important to him the past few years, as he went through a rough separation and found the centre’s help to be invaluable. “They do some really nice

work and they’re underfunded and underused,” he said. So he’s collecting pledges based on the number of wins he manages at the tournament. It could be quite a few – Lapointe is feeling good about his game at the moment. Island Top Team has totally changed his jiu-jitsu, he said, and even though he’s a veteran at the sport, he continues to learn. “All the time,” Lapointe said. “Rob’s brilliant, the techniques he brings in. Every day [we’re] learning something new, always getting better. You never stop. That’s what’s great about jiu-jitsu. There are always innovations and always new techniques.” His own game plan is straightforward – dominate, get on top of opponents and try for submissions. Having

First lady of guitar Liona Boyd celebrates return to music with new album and new world tour BY NICHOLAS PESCOD
W
THE NEWS BULLETIN
hen it came time for classical guitarist Liona Boyd to make a decision about her future, she faced a dilemma. “Do I do English literature, which I loved or do I do music?” Boyd said. “I did music, which I am very happy about.” Since that decision more than 30 years ago, Boyd released more than 20 albums and established herself as one of Canada’s most successful artists, often referred to as “The First Lady of the Guitar.” “Who would have thought that when I started out as a guitar student in Toronto that my career would take me all over the world? I am very fortunate,” Boyd said. Her musical adventure began when she was a young girl living in England. The Order of Canada recipient has played to presidents, prime ministers, kings, queens, and even jurors during O.J. Simpson’s trial. “I’ve been all over the world and had amazing adventures and meet all kinds of wonderful people,” Boyd said. “It’s almost always the music that has brought me.” On Sunday (March 9) she will be playing at the Port Theatre with Michael Savona. “Michael is fantastic ... he plays a solo piece and I play a solo piece,” Boyd said. ◆ See ‘CANADIAN’ /B2

Canadian culture inspires Boyd’s latest album u From /B1 Boyd’s most recent album, The Return... to Canada with Love, was released last year and is a tribute to all things Canadian. The album was
inspired by an event that happened years earlier in Germany. “We were at a conference in Berlin and there were about 300 delegates, including us, from different
groups and different countries. We had to sing songs from our country and ... we were stumped because we had forgotten Maple Leaf Forever ... so we
ended up singing Alouette and it was a complete disaster ... I was really embarrassed,” Boyd said. “That was the point when I thought one of these days I am going
to write a Canadian song.” The Return... to Canada with Love features the likes of Jann Arden, Serena Ryder, Randy Bachman, Divine Brown and
plenty of well-known Canadians such as astronaut Chris Hadfield and CBC broadcaster Ron McLean. The album also features Boyd singing in a few different aborig-

inal languages. “I was determined to sing a bunch of different native languages,” she said. “So I sang in Ojibwa and I sing in Cree.” Boyd, who performed at Carnegie Hall when she was 26, has come a long way over the last decade. In 2003, she was diagnosed with musician’s focal dystonia, an incurable neurological condition that affected her playing ability and ultimately forced her to change her playing style. “It was very hard. There is no physical pain at all but a lot of mental anguish. I thought I was not going to be able to play the guitar again,” she said. Around the same time, her then husband suggested that she quit music all together. “I’d rather give up my luxury life in Beverly Hills than my guitar, even though I had no idea if I would ever be on the stage again,” Boyd said. “It was tough.” After a divorce and a lot of soul searching, the classical guitarist experienced rebirth. “I took a few years off and I reinvented my whole technique,” she said. There has been no shortage of memorable moments throughout Boyd’s career. She recalled a time when she was sitting beside Pierre Trudeau, whom she dated for nearly a decade. “I have had so many,” she said. “When I was sitting between Ronald Regan and Pierre Trudeau, having just played for Margaret Thatcher and all of these legendary people ... I can’t deny that it was a special moment.” Despite having fond memories with some of the most famous people on earth, Boyd also treasures the simple moments. “There are also special things like when I paddled a canoe and played up in Moose Factory for the native people that came and sang for me and they made a beautiful choir. I’ll never forget that, it was so touching,” Boyd said. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Unique experiences found on tour
I
DAviD WARD performs at the Buzz.
By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
P
erhaps of all the places singersongwriter David Ward has performed, there have been none more interesting than the time he performed at a funeral in Africa. “There are different tribes over in West Africa and Ghana and all of them have different traditions. One of them is that one of the days of mourning a loved one when they pass is a day of celebration,” Ward said. “The idea is that there is no more trouble under the sun. We got to be a part of that big celebration, which was kind of surreal.” At the time, Ward was studying percussion and teaching in West Africa. The Lower Mainland-based artist recalled the feeling he got at the funeral that day. “The adrenaline was just pumping so hard,” Ward said. “That was the first
time I’d ever been to Africa, and the only time I’d ever been, but the whole experience was just so much to take in.” Ward will be performing in Nanaimo on Saturday (March 8), 7:30 p.m., however it won’t be at a funeral. He’ll be playing tracks from his recently released album Gold Future Time at the Buzz Coffee House. “Basically the album is about the fear of loss and the need for ideas that are bigger than us to preserve our hope and innocence. I tried to explore that in a number of different ways,” Ward said. The album was heavily inspired by the George Orwell classic novel Animal Farm – the title Golden Future Time comes from the book.

“I just read it recently. Funny enough I didn’t read a lot of those classic books in high school,” Ward said. “So for me to discover them now has been kind of an amazing trip.” Ward’s influences and sound ranges from everything to funk, soul, electronica, jazz and disco. “Very generally I sort of say it’s a cross between art rock and soul but I even hate putting that kind of box around because it’s so limiting,” Ward said. The Vancouverite has also been working on a documentary about the independent music scene in Canada and the United Kingdom. Ward documents his own musical journey throughout the production. The idea for
the documentary stemmed from a concert series that Ward put on in Vancouver. The series eventually grew into a documentary after Ward realized the project demanded more attention and time. “We wanted to start exploring some relevant topics in the music scene and get the bands who we had on each bill to talk about them. We called the series Spotlight On,” Ward said. “We’d get the three bands that were involved in that night to rattle off on the subject that we had picked and we realized that the subjects were often much too big for the three to four minute format that we wanted to do. So, I expanded it into a full-length documentary.” arts@nanaimobulletin.com

Library seeks adventurous teens By Nicholas Pescod The News BulleTiN
Gabriola Island’s library is calling on adventurous teens. The island’s Vancouver Island Regional Library branch is holding a video contest called Gabriola VID X. Librarian Jason Kuffler said those in the Nanaimo regional area between the ages of 12 to 19 can submit a short video of themselves engaged in an outdoor sport. “They can submit a maximum 10 minute video of them or
their friends doing an action sport. So, skateboarding, mountain biking, surfing, whatever they do,” Kuffler said.“It doesn’t have to be edited but if they add music and it’s edited then that’s a bonus.” Teens can enter by burning their video onto a CD and dropping it off, or by e-mailing a video file. “They can drop it [the CD] off at their nearest VIRL branch with instructions to send it to the Gabriola Island Library and it will be sent at no cost,” Kuffler said.
There will also be a viewing party on March 15 at the Gabriola Island library from 2 to 4 p.m., where the winner will be announced. There will be prizes for the top submissions. Kuffler is hoping to garner enough interest from teens to eventually start a digital editing club at the library. “The most difficult thing for a library to do is attract teens that don’t normally use the library and show them that it

Hospice help Narinder and Kulwant Parmar visited the new Hospice House to give a gift of $1,500 to Jeanne Fahlman, development officer, left, and Wendy Pratt, executive director, to support the work of hospice in Nanaimo. For the past five years, the couple collected recyclables while walking their dogs. In 2013, they chose to give the money raised to Expand the Heart of Hospice campaign to give the organization a new home.
Kindergarten students at Rock City Elementary School wanted to help polar bears in the Arctic and hosted a muffin sale to help raise money. They collected $426 – $300 will go to the World Wildlife Fund and the remainder to Nanaimo Foodshare to help grow food locally, as the students learned that emissions from transport of food contributes to melting Arctic sea ice.

Welcome to the driver’s seat
The new GLA is a practical small SUV perfect for young families or couples that want the same underlying goodness that is in the CLA but with standard all wheel drive and ease of use. Zack Spencer
Luxury wheels at just the light price MALAGA, SPAIN - It might be winter here but it’s always nice to look forward to warmer days, filled with sun and clear roads. To get a sneak peak at what better weather looks and feels like, plus get a chance to drive the all new Mercedes GLA250 and GLA 45 AMG, the advanced drive program was held in Malaga, Spain. The GLA is built of the same platform as the hot, new CLA sedan that arrived last fall. Developing it into a taller, more practical small SUV is perfect for young families or couples that want the same underlying goodness that is in the CLA but with standard all wheel drive (AWD) and ease of use. Pricing has not been confirmed but when it arrives this fall, expect the same aggressive pricing that the CLA delivers. That car starts at $33,900 but with AWD comes up to $36,800. Looks This new GLA is not as tall as the B-Class, which also shares the same platform, and not nearly as low-slung as the CLA. The GLA has a less aggressive front grille

The cargo area isn’t huge at 1235L but the rear seats do split and fold for additional cargo capabilities.

Drive The base GLA 250 comes with a 2.0L turbocharged direct injection 4-cylinder with a healthy 208hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, the same as the B-Class and base CLA. There is plenty of acceleration and cruising on the highway is effortless.
Driving through the mountain canyons back from Granada to Malaga was a real treat. The countryside is rustic and beautiful and the twisty roads sublime. The base GLA never set a wheel wrong and the 7-speed duel-clutch automatic can be left in economy, sport or manual for each driving situation. All GLA models come with standard AWD and this system can detach the rear wheels and drive in FWD for better economy but switches seamlessly back when more traction or cornering capability is required, plus Dynamic Cornering Assist applies just a small amount of brake force to the inside wheel when cornering to aid in the process. The 45 AMG takes things to a completely new level. The 2.0L 4-cylinder is hand assembled and pumps out a whopping 355hp and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The 7-speed transmission and AWD system have been adapted by AMG to deliver a go-cart like drive that is so reassuring and potent that it makes the driver look and feel fantastic. Cornering is effortless and the bigger wheels and lowered suspension give great feedback but it is not jarring. Verdict Mercedes Benz is enabling more people to access its brand with smaller less expensive vehicles. The new GLA 250 and GLA 45 AMG are certainly very attractive, powerful and fun vehicles to drive. Ten top trucks get the job done by Ian Harwood
What are my favourite trucks? – It’s a question readers ask me all the time in the supermarket and on the street. Though not in order of preference, here are my 10 choices. Silverado/Sierra The 2014 GMC/Chevy Silverado/Sierra half-ton pickup has gone through some monumental changes this year. What an improvement with a very comfortable and refined interior on all trim levels, and three engine choices, the Eco Tec 4.3-litre V6, 5.3-litre V8, and a 6.2-litre V8. Colorado The 2015 Chevrolet Colorado is very similar in
design to its big brother the Silverado, this Mid-size truck fills a void in Canada. Still expected to work as hard as a full-size truck, the Colorado can tow more than 3,039 kilograms (6700 pounds) a 2.5L I-4 engine is standard with an optional 3.6L V6 with a six-speed automatic transmission. 3500HD Denali The 2015 GMC 3500HD Denali is a beast. This truck is built to pull and with 10,251 kilograms (22,600 pouunds) of trailer towing capacity it does just that. The 6.6L V8 turbo engine delivers 397 horsepower and 765 lb ft of torque and is paired with a 1000 series Allison transmission. With interior upgrades such as 12-way power adjustable bucket seats, heated leather-wrapped steering wheel and a Bose sound system you can operate it in comfort. F150 EcoBoost The 2014 Ford F150 Ecoboost is seeing more than 100,000 Eco Boost engines
being produced monthly and you can bet a majority of these engines are finding their way into the 2014 F150 pickup. It holds the record in Canada for highest pickup sales, and at 12.9/9.0 L/100 km (city/highway) it keeps the money in your wallet a little longer. Raptor The 2014 Ford Raptor is still one of my favourite off-road vehicles. It has electronic locking rear differential, shift on the fly four-wheel drive, advance trac with roll stability control, and trailer sway control. Front and rear mounted cameras to add a second pair of eyes to the terrain around you and a 6.2-litre V8 engine to help you get up and over that hill. F150 The 2015 Ford F150’s allnew design features and a completely aluminum body and high strength steel in its frame make this truck up to 317 kg (700 lbs) lighter. It has 11 new class-exclusive features, including 360-de-

A 6.7l Cummins turbo diesel engine delivers 385 hp and 850 lb ft of torque. Tundra The 2014 Toyota Tundra gets a new body style this year, impressive hood and fender design. The Western-themed 1794 Edition commemorates the founding year of a Texas ranch where the Tundra plant is situated. This interior is covered with

Saddle tan brown leather seats and rich maple wood grain panels throughout. It is powered by a 4.6-litre or a 5.7-litre engine. Can it compete with the big boys? This is the year to see. Tacoma The 2014 Toyota Tacoma has continued to increase in popularity and is a very agile four-wheeler. The double cab gives plenty of room for all your buddies and the 4.0-litre V6 engine can get you to your favorite fishing hole and back. With the addition of some modern day technology such as backup camera, heated seats and six airbags, this truck has everything I am looking for in a pickup. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

SO WHAT IS A “CLEARANCE CENTRE”?
We receive many local ‘older’ trade-ins. Some have higher kilometers, but have been well maintained, and kept in good condition by a ‘careful owner’. We put these vehicles through our service dept. and check steering and brake components, exhaust condition, lights and belts. Anything pertaining to ‘safety’. If the vehicle checks out, we proceed with required reconditioning, and offer them ‘for sale’ at very affordable prices.
We include a warranty, roadside assistance and supply a carproof history, lien and ICBC reports. Vehicles that do not meet the standards laid out by the ‘motor vehicle act’ are simply recycled.

A car that drives and parks itself by Keith Morgan
It is pouring with rain so the car drops you off at the supermarket entrance and heads off on its own to find a parking spot way the heck and yonder at the other end of the mall. When you have finished your big shop for the week, it is still raining cats, dogs and frogs so you hit the button on the key fob. The car returns from wherever it was and you load up with nary a drop of the wet stuff falling on your head. Futuristic fantasy? – Well, getting your hands on the key fob to an autonomous drive car may mean a wait until 2020 when Nissan plans to begin selling that feature in multiple vehicles. However, a car capable of doing the task described in a driverless mode is here in the now. Nissan granted yours truly the opportunity recently to take a spin in a driverless electricpowered Leaf. Actually, the word spin doesn’t truly describe what was a very smooth and controlled ride around a course loaded with obstacles, traffic lights turning red, cars changing lanes unexpectedly and automated pedestrians wondering out in front of us – if ‘me’ and the car counts as an ‘us’. The Leaf looked like any normal edition but was loaded with 360-degree cameras, laser scanners, radar and other ‘electrickery’, as a TV character called Catweazle once described the workings of a light bulb. I felt like that character from my childhood, who incidentally was a caveman hurled through time into the 1960s. The car pulled away smoothly, stopped at those red lights and signalled turns, a sequence of manouevres rarely witnessed on our roads when there are humans at the wheel. It slowed when a car driven by a human changed lanes ahead of us on the offroad circuit. I would have hit the phoney ped that bounded out from the curb but not this ghost driver that took instantaneous evasive action. My drive was on an airportbased circuit away from the real world, while over in Japan Nissan has conducted some demonstrations on freeways. By the end of this year, a dedicated track featuring real townscapes – masonry, not model buildings - will be ready. It will enable testers to push the vehicles impossible to carry out on public roads to ensure the technology is safe. When the car is available for real world driving, a combination of GPS navigation and a tablet-style screen will enable the non-driving driver to direct the car to work, home, play or park with precision.

Go topless in an affordable convertible by Alexandra Straub
Perhaps it might be too early to start thinking of going topless. Then again, maybe not. Dreaming about the days when we don’t need to crank the heat to full blast in the house, or bundle up to go outside to shovel snow are warming thoughts. And so is the thought of open air driving. Here are four convertibles that might help beat the winter blahs and get you thinking about the sun.
kilometres per hour. Push it again, and it retracts behind the rear head restraints at speeds up to 80 km/hr.
Beetle One of the most recognizable vehicles on the road is the VW Beetle. And its convertible version offers a very similar silhouette as its coupe sibling, thus helping it easily be spotted. The latest generation of German convertible is better than ever. Boasting more trunk room (now 500C rated at 201L as opposed As if the Fiat 500 wasn’t to 141L) than the previous cute enough, there’s also two generations, a more a drop top version to give “masculine” look and betConvertibles help ter driving dynamics. it even more character. The Pop trim or the Lounge trim beat the winter blahs There are two engines come with a 1.4L, four-cylto choose from: a 1.8L, inder MultiAir engine, which and get you thinking four-cylidner that produces about the sun. produces 101 horsepower. 170 horsepower and 184 OK, I know that’s not an lb-ft of torque, and a 2.0L, Alexandra Straub incredible amount of ponies four-cylinder turbocharged but, hey, we’re all equal in (TSI) model with 200 horsestop-and-go traffic, right? power with the manual To catch the attention of transmission. fellow commuters, the 500C comes with the option of three canvas top colours and MX-5 14 different exterior hues. The Fiat 500C doesn’t have a lot of horsepower but it has spirit. Whether taking it out for a spin on the road or the track, this tiny two-door has nothing but good times woven into its sheet metal. The Mazda MX-5’s manual vinyl top takes only a few seconds to drop down, allowing its driver and passenger to experience a completely new world of topless driving. Under its pint-size hood is a 2.0L, 4-cylinder engine with an output of 167 horsepower and 140 lb-ft of torque. There’s also the option to outfit the MX-5 with various transmissions: a 5-speed manual, a 6-speed manual, a 6-speed automatic or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters, there’s fun to be had by all.

Mustang Under the hood of this American muscle car, the Ford Mustang’s 3.7L, V6 engine will give you the grunt and glory of 305 horsepower. You’ll also be able to fit four people inside along with 272L of cargo around back. Despite the healthy dose of ponies under the hood, wrangling this convertible is anything but a chore. With either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission, you’d be pleasantly surprised as to how gracious this ‘Stang can be to drive. Then again, if you want to fire this rear-wheel drive vehicle up, you might just giggle in the process.

It happened just after the last flood. TThe winter beat records for snowfall, and serious springtime saw seriou flooding. Basements filled, streets were running with water, and cars were left to float and sink. One day, I walked past a junk yard and saw, what I thought, was a relatively r normal car.
the vehicle could get a person from A to B. Suddenly, I had an idea. Since the car looked fine on the outside, no one had to know its real history. I was a genius. After a night in the garage with a heater and a little scrubbing, I posted an ad on Craigslist: “2004 black Toyota Corolla for sale. No longer need, bought new car. No room in garage – need to sell ASAP!!! Few scratches, otherwise in great condition. Call cell and we’ll talk price.” Thirty minutes later I got a call from a sixteen-year old kid – a little younger than my son. We decided to meet at the local mall at about 6:00. I wonder if his parents knew what he was up to. I arrived at 6:20, telling him I was in a great rush as I had to pick my son up from soccer practice. Turns out he played, too. After some soccer gossip, we got down to business. I knew that a kid his age just wanted a ride to show off to his friends, so we spent little time on the details. I told him the car was in perfect condition and was never in any accidents. “No problems as far as I know,” I said. The kid was sold. He trusted me. I never gave him my full name, and he never gave me his. He gave me the cash, I gave him the car. All was good. I was on my way. A few days later, I saw a TV program that talked about flood damaged vehicles. Apparently, flooding can damage the computer systems, which control things like the brakes and steering. And flood vehicles can’t be registered or insured. Who knew? My mind immediately went to the kid I sold the vehicle to. I felt a twinge of guilt. Then my eyes darted to my stash of cash. Two weeks later, I had another car up for sale. Stay tuned!
I still rremember my first rs time. It was so easy. eas So thrilling. And I walked away with a couple of thousand thousa bucks in my pocket. Not bad for pocket a few hours’ hou work. What’s it doing here? he I thought. Apart from a couple coup of scratches on the outside ou and some moist seats, sea the vehicle seemed roadworthy. road I immediately asked about the car. I was told that th it was found full of flflood ood w water. Its previous owner wanted nothing to do with it. I bought the car for fo a couple hundred dollars. do I didn’t even have to register it in my name. n Originally, I had no n intention of doing what I did. I wanted to sell the car for parts. But, the engine still worked worke and
