Arts
Wilderness drawings from new talent TIMOTHY SCHAFER West Kootenay Advertiser
Sarah Burwash has been visiting rural communities and remote areas to attend artist residencies, travelling to different cities for art and craft sales, volunteering on farms and working at lodges in the Rocky Mountains. The Far Woods is a collection of watercolours and other works the Rossland native produced during these residencies and travels. The drawings published in her first book celebrate the wilderness, rural lifestyles and resourcefulness. Burwash turns to past generations who, by necessity, had to be self-sufficient and create systems of mutual dependence among community members. Burwash has been researching and immersing herself in environments where she can learn the stories, skills and gain the experience and perspective from earlier generations to create narratives that uproot her own personal mythologies.
Example of Burwash’s work
She seeks to uncover both humble and provocative histories, more specifically those of women who were brazen and persistent in forging for a new social order. She creates characters, environments and narratives that are lyrical yet quiet, like frozen moments from dreams or nightmares. Her work seeks the threads that connect the past and present, weaving imagery that urges people to wander through the drawings, discovering more upon each view and unfolding questions about our relationships to land, na-
ture, spirituality and community. Burwash grew up in Rossland, graduating from the University of British Columbia Okanagan in 2009.Working in a variety of media, from drawing and collage to video and installation, Burwash’s work most often takes form in narrative watercolour drawings. Submitted She has participated in residencies in British Columbia, Ontario, Nova Scotia, Colorado, the Yukon and Michigan. Burwash recently had a solo exhibition at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts and completed her first animation through The Centre for Art Tapes Media Arts Scholarship program. She currently resides in Halifax, NS, working full time as an artist and freelance illustrator. Her book is available through http://www.conundrumpress.com/new-titles/ the-far-woods/.

Forty-ninth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names The old Boundary railway junction of Eholt, 14 km from Greenwood, was named after Louis Eholt (1840-1911) who had a cattle ranch there next to a creek that also took his name. He appears to have sold his land to George Rendell in anticipation of the Columbia and Western Railway being built. The town was first mentioned in the Grand Forks Miner of December 10, 1898: “Eholt, Rendell and Co.’s new town in Summit camp, is to have a hotel.” A week later the paper added: “The new town of Eholt in Summit camp, it is said, will be a hummer.” Frederic Wollaston surveyed the townsite in the spring of 1899 and thanks to the Phoenix mines, Eholt became a bustling divisional railway headquarters. A post office opened the same year and operated until 1948, although the town’s heyday ended in 1912 following a fire that destroyed the CPR’s machine shops and roundhouse. The facilities were moved to Grand Forks. Louis Eholt lent his name

to two other places but it didn’t stick. In the 1880s, he pre-empted land at present-day Midway, which was first called Eholt’s. An early mention appears in the Victoria Daily Colonist of June 23, 1891: “Another seam has been discovered by John Thornton on Mr. Ray’s ranch, about two miles above Eholt’s on Boundary Creek.” Around 1893, Eholt sold his ranch to R.C. Adams of Montreal, who had a townsite laid out that was first called Boundary City and then Midway. Meanwhile, a portion of West Grand Forks, otherwise known as Columbia,

was called Little Eholt in the 1910s, although It’s unclear why. Perhaps it was home to a large number of former Eholters. Most sources say Louis Eholt was a Luxembourg native, but he was actually born in the Alsace region of France. According to his obituary in the Colville Examiner, he came to the United States at 19 and went to California, arriving late in the gold rush. But he was early into BC when gold was discovered on the Fraser River and ran a pack train and hotel. He later owned a ranch on Pavilion Mountain, near Clinton, and married Emily Crozer
in 1879. He appears to have come to the Boundary in the 1880s and left around the time his namesake town was established, for he was never listed as a resident there. He died in Meyers Falls, Wash. in 1911 at age 71, and is buried alongside an Annie L. Eholt, presumably his second wife, who died the same year. He was survived by a stepdaughter, Lillian Bonnett. Although Eholt is today a ghost town, its site is denoted by a roadside marker. The word Eholt is also painted on a cement block and a homemade sign along the highway.

One young city student has received a memorable opportunity as he recently traveled to Victoria to take part in the B.C. Youth Parliament at the Legislature. Jacob Noseworthy, 18, who attends Walker Development Centre, was one of 90 youth throughout B.C. who were selected for the chance to participate in a mock parliamentary session in the actual legislature. “I had to apply, as well as get nominated by my school,” said Noseworthy, who also had to submit an essay and an application. Noseworthy travelled by himself to Victoria by bus and then ferry. He, and all the parliamentarians, stayed at the prestigious Harbour Towers Hotel. “We took their (MLAs) seats ourselves and we debated on issues,” he said. “We passed our own legislation which is binding and goes on throughout the year which revolves around our community work and future sessions. We also debated private members resolutions which anyone could write about worldwide issues, community issues, issues that affect B.C., Canada or anything.” For Noseworthy, who plans on becoming involved in politics, it was a great experience. “I thought it was an amazing opportunity because we actually got to sit in the legislature where our MLAs sit and go through the legislative policy just like they do but we got to debate our own legislation for B.C. Noseworthy came up with a private member’s resolution on criminalizing cyberbullying although it did not get debated. “There were 35 resolutions proposed and we only had time to debate three of them,” he said. “But it still went into the journals we all received.” The young Parliamentarians also got to hear from some of the MLAs who spoke about the legislative process. The group also got to tour the Lieutenant-Governor’s house. “It was a great experience,” said Noseworthy. “I’d recommend it to anyone. I’m hoping to go back next year.” Next up, Noseworthy plans
to attend the regional youth parliament in Nelson on May 3-5. “It’s for people from ages 14-18 to go to,” he said. “It’s a smaller version of the youth parliament in Victoria. It’s also a stepping stone to get there and into politics as well.” Noseworthy said he’s hoping to get into a career in politics and his experience in Victoria has only bolstered his enthusiasm. “I like the aspect of being able to make changes in your community, your area, and the country as a whole and being able to voice the concerns of the people of your region, 2.8” ”x said 4” Noseworthy.

The GLA is built of the same platform as the hot, new CLA sedan that arrived last fall. Developing it into a taller, more practical small SUV is perfect for young families or couples that want the same underlying goodness that is in the CLA but with standard all wheel drive (AWD) and ease of use. Pricing has not been confirmed but when it arrives this fall, expect the same aggressive pricing that the CLA delivers. That car starts at $33,900 but with AWD comes up to $36,800. Looks This new GLA is not as tall as the B-Class, which also shares the same platform, and not nearly as low-slung as the CLA. The GLA has a less aggressive front grille

Drive The base GLA 250 comes with a 2.0L turbocharged direct injection 4-cylinder with a healthy 208hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, the same as the B-Class and base CLA. There is plenty of acceleration and cruising on the highway is effortless.
Driving through the mountain canyons back from Granada to Malaga was a real treat. The countryside is rustic and beautiful and the twisty roads sublime. The base GLA never set a wheel wrong and the 7-speed duel-clutch automatic can be left in economy, sport or manual for each driving situation. All GLA models come with standard AWD and this system can detach the rear wheels and drive in FWD for better economy but switches seamlessly back when more traction or cornering capability is required, plus Dynamic Cornering Assist applies just a small amount of brake force to the inside wheel when cornering to aid in the process. The 45 AMG takes things to a completely new level. The 2.0L 4-cylinder is hand assembled and pumps out a whopping 355hp and 332 lb.-ft. of torque. The 7-speed transmission and AWD system have been adapted by AMG to deliver a go-cart like drive that is so reassuring and potent that it makes the driver look and feel fantastic. Cornering is effortless and the bigger wheels and lowered suspension give great feedback but it is not jarring. Verdict Mercedes Benz is enabling more people to access its brand with smaller less expensive vehicles. The new GLA 250 and GLA 45 AMG are certainly very attractive, powerful and fun vehicles to drive. Ian Harwood Ian Harwood has been involved in the light truck industry for the past 30 years. His career started with the opening of a small 4-wheel drive shop in the early 80s. This shop was involved in custom fabrication, complete 4x4 rebuilds, and sales of off-road related products. This would prepare him for his current position as Manager for Custom Truck Parts, one of the largest accessory warehouses in Canada. Ian started his journalism career in the late 1090s with a column in a national magazine for automotive enthusiasts. In the spring of 2005 Ian was approached by a local news outlet to write a weekly column. Wilderness exploring, fishing and four wheeling have been his passion since he was a teenager. Some memorable moments in Ian’s career are flying in by hto the famous Rubicon Trail in Northern California and driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler out of the backwoods, up a waterfall and out of the trail to Lake Tahoe. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Homemade KITT: ‘Knight Rider’ replica car By Rob Sass
Chris Palmer needed five Pontiac Trans Ams, numerous visits to eBay, countless hours of work and the generosity of several friends to recreate the car that starred in the hit 1980s television show “Knight Rider.” And he wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again. “It was totally worth it – more than worth it,” Palmer said of his KITT (Knight Industries Two Thousand) lookalike. “I love this car. Everybody seems to love this car.” Palmer started with a 1991 Pontiac Trans Am, which had a better drivetrain but was nine years newer than the car used in the show. That deci-

Best New SUV
Many car makers are dropping V6 engines from their SUVs. It’s a different story at Kia. With its all-new, direct-inject V6, the Kia Sorento provides better fuel efficiency and more horsepower, so you can pass safely, climb our mountain roads and tow with confidence. Auto journalists were so impressed, they picked the Sorento as the best SUV in Canada. Now, that’s exhilarating!

driveway.ca sion necessitated the purchase of four more Trans Am models – two each from 1982 and 1983 – so he could swap out the panels and parts required to make it look like KITT. The ’91 also has a five-speed manual transmission, unlike KITT’s automatic, so Palmer chopped the gearshift and swapped out the knob to make it look authentic. Palmer found KITT’s unique dash (complete with two video screens) and the car’s trademark front bumper on eBay, and everything operates and sounds as it did on the show. KITT’s Michigan vanity license plate reads KNI6HT. The Detroit-area resident said his 3½-year project would not have been possible without the help of Sled Alley Hot Rods owner Matt Gurjack and co-worker Steve Jay; Lafata Auto Body owner Eric Lafata, who did the paint; and H&E Overlays owner Eric Thompson, who
assisted with the dash installation and also made the gauge overlays. Palmer, president of the newly created Great Lakes Knights Car Club, which he and Thompson co-founded, hopes to build show-quality movie-replica cars for other fans. For now, he’s enjoying all the attention he’s getting from the ultimate KITT car. Drives-U- Crazy . . . Passing on the right
Many drivers appear ignorant of the rules concerning when it is okay to a pass a vehicle on the right. You must not pass on the right of another vehicle on a road marked with a single lane unless that driver is making or signaling a left turn. Frequently drivers zip to the right of a traffic waiting at the lights in a bid to roar off in front at the green. It’s extremely selfish because invariably it prevents cars making a right on a red. If caught the fine is $109 fine and tw2 Driver Penalty Points. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Pick of the Week: The Astra VXR EXTREME
The Astra VXR EXTREME will be the most powerful front-wheel drive car produced by Vauxhall, General Motors’ UK subsidiary. The first public sighting sight of the coupe with the 300-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged engine under the hood was made at the Geneva Auto Show this week. The all-aluminium engine is mated to six-speed manual gearbox transmitting power through a limited-slip differential. The Vauxhall/Opel Astra models were available here under the Saturn sub-brand but with its demise so went the Astra. The likelihood of it being rebadged under another GM brand here is not likely but it’s okay to dream. The Driveway crew is in Switzerland and will report on the show next week. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

How to gift a vehicle
driveway.ca Generous friends or family members frequently opt to give away an older-model car to someone who may not have the means to purchase a car of their own. Vehicles are a necessity for those who live in areas where public transportation is unavailable or inconvenient, and gifting a car can have a significant impact on the life of someone who will be on the receiving end of the present. While gifting a car may seem like a straightforward transaction, some steps need to be taken to ensure the process is conducted in adherence to the law. Various states and provinces may have
their own specific rules, so it is best to contact your local department of motor vehicles office. The following are some general guidelines. Transfering a vehicle to another person, whether it is a gift or a sale, involves transfer of the title as well. A vehicle title is a legal document naming a person or persons as the owner of the vehicle. The title contains the current owner’s name and residential address. It also includes the vehicle’s identification number, or VIN, the date the car was sold and the mileage on the vehicle at the time of sale. Depending on where you live,
transferring the title may be as simple as writing “gift” on the title. Otherwise, you may need to fill out forms to transfer the title to another person. Some people draw up a bill of sale with a nominal dollar amount to include with the title to show documentation of the transfer of ownership. Additionally, the recipient of the gifted car will fill out paperwork, which includes tax information. Again, depending on where you live, there will be rules about tax exemptions or taxes that must be paid on the vehicle. This is another time when contacting the motor vehicle department is adviseable. Keep in mind that whoever is
doing the gifting may not be able to use the car as a tax writeoff. The United States Internal Revenue Service notes that you cannot deduct the value of gifts you make other than those given to registered charitable organizations. It is common courtesy to ensure the vehicle is in good working order prior to giving it as a gift. This way the recipient isn’t faced with a bevy of costly repairs. Take the car or truck in for a tune-up. Be sure it has a fresh oil change and that it has been washed and vacuumed. This way the recipient gets the maximum benefit from this generous gift.

Duke of Edinburgh’s award promotes youth development clusive, regardless of background.”
ART HARRISON West Kootenay Advertiser
For young people these days it can be a challenge to take some of the necessary first steps towards becoming a self-sufficient, independent adult. First jobs can be harder to find, the transition from high school to post secondary education is fraught with complicated twists and turns, and it is far more common to see requirements for jobs and scholarships asking for qualities such as “leadership” and “a commitment to community service” as being prerequisites. But how do youths gain such experience? According to Martine Oosting, field staff officer for the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE), they just need to talk to her. “It’s a process of challenging and creating yourself,” she said. “It’s a non-academic, non-competitive, discovery process, open to anybody between the ages of 14 and 24. There is no religious, political, or racial agenda. It’s in-
“Many cadet groups promote the award because it ties in with many of their goals...” Martine Oosting
Registrants go through a process of progressing through bronze, silver, and gold ranks, gaining experience and developing skills in five separate areas; community service, development of personal skills, adventurous journey outdoors, physical fitness and recreation, and a final residential project of service in another community or even different country for the gold award. “It shows commitment, dedication, and self-initiative, done without the parent’s influence or peer pressure,” said Oosting. “It provides you with tools to move forward and become a leader.” The DofE was begun by Prince Philip in 1956 to help young people de-
velop a sense of responsibility towards themselves and their communities. It is now followed in 140 countries around the world with many prestigious schools in the U.K. and elsewhere including it as practically a required part of the school curriculum. Youths begin at the bronze level at 14, can progress to silver at 15, and complete the process with the gold award at 16 years old. There is no set time frame in which to complete the levels and registrants track their activities in a log book which is verified by their assessor or mentor. “It gives you a framework to focus on goals and promotes the idea of community service without financial gain,” Oosting said. “Many cadet groups and youth clubs promote the award because it ties in with many of their goals but it can be done totally independently.” In the Greater Trail area the DofE is sponsored by Teck so entrants can begin the program without having to pay the initial registration fee.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week March 7, 2014
Tip of the Week: The fading echo and glow of the Winter Olympics in Sochi Russia is serving to bring sharper focus to other news. Given the Astrological portrait, it does not come as a big surprise that as the games were on so too were the violent, revolutionary and history making events in Kiev Ukraine. The polarized perspectives and emotions that these events stirred, and both centered in such close geographical proximity, present a complex contrast. Such are examples of how the drama of life often is. Witnessing yet another leader fall from power and grace in the face of the forces of democracy is also both heartening and tragic. What Astrology presents is evidence of synchronistic events which mirror planetary alignments as they are perceived from here on earth, from where the drama and its actors, stages, plots and themes are centered. We can measure these synchronicities from both large scale frames of reference and from individual ones as well. The Sun currently in Pisces and couched between its ruling planet Neptune and Chiron and forming a harmonious connection with Jupiter is suggestive of a peaceful pause. However, the deeper picture tells us that this may simply be a truce period. Neptune in Pisces (2011 – 2026) symbolizes a mass spiritual awakening yet can also manifest as mass denial, delusion and deception. Jupiter is also in close Opposition Aspect to Pluto and at the mid-point between them we find Uranus in Aries. This is the point of the sword and it is destined to cut an indelible swath. Like the sword analogy, the archetypal principles of the planets cut both ways. Uranus in Aries (2011-2019) is a revolutionary force for democracy. The downside is it can be aggressive and violent. So goes the games and the games go on. Get more details in my New Moon Newsletter - March 28 – in Pisces. Free sign-up on my website and posted on my Facebook Fan Page: Sunstarastrology.

You have probably been pushing hard these days; now for some downtime. For you this could include quality time with friends. At deeper levels, a fresh start in your most intimate relationships is likely and ideal. A romantic getaway would be timely. Open communications and discussions about the future will match your mood to vent your visions. The time has come to be that much more deliberate in your actions. By slowing down you can actually do things better or make improvements where needed. Yet, be aware of tendencies to be too critical of yourself and others. Take deeper breaths and acknowledge yourself for achievements to date. As well, enjoy more quality time with friends for a while. It is time to do the next meaningful thing with or in your life and to get recognized and rewarded for it. The scope and scale of how much recognition and reward depends on you, your stage in life, your circumstance, destiny, attitude and the choices make. The other big question though is: what is it? Ask with deep sincerity and you will receive. A search for deeper meaning continues. While we each need our own answers it is natural to turn to ‘higher authorities’. As is life, there are ever many levels and sectors where these sources operate. They can be literal and material and/or archetypal and spiritual. Whichever one(s) you are dealing with, assert your position that your involvement must feel meaningful. Some cycles are deeper than others and some more intense as well, like the one you are experiencing now. It can perhaps best be described as a healing journey. These are seldom the fun kind. However, they do have value and purpose. A main challenge is to interpret them for what they truly are. For best results, communicate with someone who can really listen. Cultivating new and healthier relationships is an important focus now. Some of these are linked to your own lifestyle habits. Is there anything you would like or feel you need to change? Sometimes the best leverage is soberly considering the cost of perpetuating the old patterns. Summon the courage to see your blind spots; get vertical and get going.

Creating a healthier rhythm and flow continues. The time has come to negotiate a new deal. This includes entering new territory, literally and/or figuratively. Yet, the first real move has to occur in your own mind. Choices and decisions must be made. You cannot please all the people. So, ‘to thine own self be true’ and remember, healthy is a cornerstone of happy. You are in a creative leadership cycle. Yet, before you can advance you may have to clear, heal and resolve matters from the past. Sometimes the best first step is to create a space at home or at work that is inspiring and empowering. Clean your office and move furniture perhaps to re-set and refresh. Whatever you do or how, clear the clutter. There’s no place like home and home is where your heart is, literally. Yet, you may be wondering who you are let alone where you live. This can be quite disconcerting. You may feel like you are in the nexus, in limbo, somewhere between here and there. Well, that makes sense looking at your charts. Remember, life is a journey and you are en route. You are in the mood to cover a lot of ground. Hopefully circumstances are harmonizing with your flow and determination. With all the planets currently in retrograde, there may be more twists and turns than usual. Rather than impatiently force and control, contemplate, communicate, correspond and brainstorm with other key power players. Deciphering what constitutes your highest priorities is a main focus now. These will likely be linked to experiencing harmonious and fulfilling relationships. You are gearing-up for things to shift in this regard. You want to feel freer and more fulfilled. Consider that part of the deal is linked to shifting your perspectives and consequently your approach. Taking pioneering leads will feel right now. Yet, things may not be so straightforward anymore and may not be again soon. At worst, it is difficult to relax or feel at peace. This is an opportune time to clarify and aspire to realize your highest ideals. Emotional self-control is linked to your breath and to expressing gratitude for all the good in your life, now.
