Townhouses planned for marina site under new proposal BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A new proposal which reduces the number of residential units and the height of buildings planned for the marina site, was narrowly supported by members of Sylvan Lake’s Municipal Planning Commission Monday night in a 3-2 vote. Graham Parsons, Robert Ornella and Jacqueline Ruhe supported the project while Megan Chernoff and Matt Prete voted against. Frank Peck and Colleen Jensen were absent from the meeting. The development application will be presented at next Monday’s council meeting for approval since council is the approving authority for projects in the Lakeshore Direct Control District. Sylvan Lake Harbour Ltd. is now planning to build 25 three-storey townhouse units on the east end of the site. The existing two storey commercial building will remain. The current application, if it’s approved, would nullify the previous application, approved in May 2012, for the first phase of development on the site which included a 40 unit residential building with 94 underground and 42 surface parking stalls. Al Laplante, speaking for the company, said the previous permit allowed a building height of 62 feet while the proposed buildings would be 36 feet tall. Additionally rather than one solid building, the townhouses would be contained in four buildings. “There are considerably more view corridors and they’re 26 feet shorter,” he said. Kim Devlin, a town planner, said, “the development will have no detrimental effect on adjoining properties in terms of privacy or shadowing and is a scale

fitting with existing developments in the area … The proposal is consistent with potential developments that may occur in the area and for all of these reasons staff has considered the height of the development to be fitting for the site and the area.” Her report to the commission also indicated that a portion of the development fronts onto Lakeshore Drive “very close to the property line which will add to the pedestrian friendly, walkable environment”. Devlin indicated four sets of comments have been received from adjacent landowners
stating issues with increased traffic and parking in residential areas as well as the view of the lake being blocked. “The way the development has been designed allows for opportunities for views to the lake and marina area from Lakeshore Drive by providing smaller clusters of buildings with spaces between,” said her report. “The large parking area between the residential development and commercial area also provides an area with views of the lake.” Each row house provides three parking stalls, two within a
garage and one in the driveway. The new proposal includes a total of 76 surface parking stalls. The commercial component requires 14 stalls which leaves 62 stalls for marina users. Prete voiced a concern “about ending up with a residential development in what, over the next 30 years, would be a significant commercial area around it.” Devlin indicated the current commercial building is larger in size than what was planned in the previous approval and the proposal meets the intent of the Waterfront Area Redevelopment Plan. land is owned privately, Prete was also concerned about reaction to the proposal. “There was huge public reaction to the last one approved indicating it shouldn’t have been. My concern is the perception of the public that we’ve made another mistake … is
there a happy medium or do we just push it through, the public’s concerns aren’t concerns?” “What’s the public perception going to be? It was negative from the last time around, that should teach us a lesson, how we manage it this

time,” he said. Chernoff also said she understood it was private land but indicated “I think there should be something that can be done without such a huge variance,” indicating concerns about parking in the area. The parking calculation presented to commission members, indicated the developer would be paying ‘cash in lieu’ for 11 parking stalls rather than 39 parking stalls that was required in the previous approval. Parsons replied to Chernoff that he didn’t think the variance was huge. “I was in favour of the last one,” he said. Ornella also rebutted the suggestion the last approval was a mistake. “I feel at that time we looked at all the different issues. I believe we did do our due diligence. We knew what the concerns were at that time. All of the questions were answered. To say it was a mistake I think that’s wrong.”

Let residents express opinion on cost of new arena, curling rink Dear Editor, Let’s talk about the newly proposed sports arena. Sylvan Lake needs to replace our now condemned curling rink and we also need to replace the hockey rink that, sadly, lost its roof. These two ideas are true. I wonder if we are going down the right road as we work to accomplish filling this need. Allow me to deviate just a bit. When most of the citizens of Sylvan Lake decide to choose a new home to live in, if money is easily available and not going to impact them much, I bet lots of us would choose to buy on the lake and live in a house with a swimming pool and have a nice big boat tied to our private dock. But we don’t go that route because we don’t want to go that far over our heads in debt. I ask our present mayor and council to take another look at this entire direction because what
if the taxpayers in Sylvan Lake don’t want to go this much farther into debt? The new sports arena is going to cost around $20 million. That is money we just don’t have right now so we are going to have to borrow. Since we are going to replace our curling rink and our hockey rink now, why not put it to a plebiscite so the taxpayers of Sylvan Lake can make the decision as to how much we are prepared to spend to do this. Just put it in our utility statement next month and everyone will be able to answer yes or no to this $20 million venture. But give us the facts so we can make a good decision. Let us know how much extra each business and household in Sylvan Lake are going to have to pay each year for the next five or 10 years. If the answer is a majority ‘yes’, then we go ahead. But if the answer is a majority ‘no’, then we need to look at alternative ways to accomplish the same

The drive opens on Mar. 5. This March Canadian Red Cross is asking for $10 million to carry on its tireless mission of mercy, and the need is greater now than ever before. Why? Because the responsibilities of Red Cross have increased. Millions of people in the liberated countries are desti-
thing. Here is one alternative. We already know that a new six-sheet curling rink constructed on the same site as the old one now stands on would cost $3.5 million. The ice area is pretty much the same as would be required to house and replace our fallen hockey rink. This way still gives Sylvan Lake community a new curing rink and a new hockey rink. We can afford $5 million and, furthermore, this way would probably give us our facilities within one year instead of the two or three being mentioned for the construction time required to complete the $20 million arena. I think town council should find out what the voters want. Please let us decide. Ted Klassen, Sylvan Lake

An extensive paving program was completed, the town acquired two school buildings which are now being completed as a new town office and a garage for town equipment. New sidewalk was completed, street lights installed and a new subdivision opened. The town’s Golden Jubilee celebrated in June 1963, was most successful. Behaviour of some young people immature, troubling Dear Editor, I find it troubling to see the young people of our community crowding around Mac’s store at noon hour on school days. I see large groups of kids swearing, smoking, playing loud music and making a mess inside and outside the store. The staff at Mac’s have to have someone at the door watching for theft, as this is a huge problem that raises prices for everyone. On an individual basis, each of these kids are probably polite and well behaved but in a group they can be very difficult to deal with. Some of them seem intent on shocking us old folks (that is anyone over 30)
with their behaviour. Surely they realize how immature they look. As a nurse, it is so sad to see these beautiful young folk smoking cigarettes, ruining their health and looks. I often wonder where they get the cigarettes. Getting drunk and high seem to be the topics of conversation. Some of the boys talk very disrespectfully about some of the girls and vice versa. Kind of shocking for an old girl like myself! They do not seem to care who overhears their conversations as they speak in very loud tones. I wish some of their parents could witness this behaviour, although I doubt it would

Important love of hockey not lose its luster thanks for honour Dear Editor, After announcing at the Bantam AA game last weekend and having been informed to read the paper’s, ‘player of the week’ when I get home, I can’t fully express the feeling I had as I opened the paper, read through the lists of players and then finding my name being listed as the Bantam’s player of the week. But I can tell you, it is truly an honour to be recognized by the club for doing
what I feel is something everyone should have and enjoy. Having been raised through minor hockey and with a father in broadcasting who called our games, it’s always been a passion to be able to do the same for my own children. After our arena’s collapse, I found it only fitting that our emphasis for the love of this game not lose its luster and be known as, ‘that sad year we lost our arena’ but that we have our experience heightened by adding an element to the game Celebrated that I remember fondly growing up. Having the music, the sound of hearing your name announced — it all added to the full experience of the game, growing up with hockey. The bonds that go with that are made for life and memories are forever forged within, so it’s truly an honour to be recognized for being a part of that for everyone. WORKING “WORKER BEE” AS A
RCMP NOTES
By Steve Rowe Gideons
Psalm 119:103....How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. Honey is a natural sweetener. You may not be aware that....BEE POLLEN has many great properties/reasons to add Bee Pollen to your daily diet. Bee Pollen is an Energy Enhancer and Immune Booster. The main reason we can have honey and Bee Pollen is through the Worker Bees. Worker Bees have a common goal? They work for the Common Goal or Cause of the HIVE. It takes 22,700 bees to fill a single jar of honey. Over the year the Queen Bee will produce 100,000 to 200,000 worker bees that will spend between 10 and 20 days collecting nectar. The key are the Worker Bees. What if everyone who attends a church or part of a
ministry had a common goal to be a Worker Bee for the good of the Hive or Cause. We share love, the love of Christ. Love is often expressed in our Words......as in Proverbs 16:24......Pleasant words as a honeycomb. Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. Notice the word healing. Never be ashamed to be a Worker Bee and just as important is our Healing Words. Never be ashamed to pray for someone. May we continue to be a worker bee; sharing sweet words and then observe or watch our sphere of influence change. Purpose to be a Worker Bee and Speaking Sweet Words is the Common Cause/Goal for the Kingdom. Thanks for taking time to reading this article. Have a sweet and productive week.

Vote, vote, vote is the goal of Hockeyville campaign organizers BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A group of volunteers have been working frantically preparing to get the vote out during the Kraft Hockeyville competition this weekend. Announcement of the top 16 communities is scheduled for the intermission between the second and third periods of the first Hockey Night in Canada game Saturday night. Then at 8 p.m. an intense 48-hour period of voting

takes place to determine what four communities — two from the west and two from the east — will move on to the next round of voting. A second announcement will be made during a Hockey Night in Canada game on Mar. 15. The final round of voting will begin Mar. 22 after the field has been narrowed to two communities. “We fully expect to be among the top 16,” said committee chairman Graham Parsons. “Then it’s a case of go, go, go.” “Our whole goal is to bring national attention to our town and to bring our community together,” he said during a meeting Tuesday night. People may vote as often as they want. The prize at stake is $100,000 for arena upgrades plus the opportunity to host a pre-season NHL game and a visit from CBC. The top 16 communities win $25,000 towards arena upgrades. Those who progress to the top four see that amount increased to $50,000 and then the final two see the total increase to $100,000. During the past couple of weeks, Krafty, the local banner has made stops in lots of places where people have posed for pictures which are uploaded to the Sylvan Lake Hockeyville Facebook page. Now that voting is just days away, things are ramping up to spread the word that our entry needs votes. Volunteers are attending hockey games in Central Alberta locations. A group will be at the Red Deer Rebels game Friday night. Others will be at the Red Deer home show Saturday and Sunday. And still others will be at the Bentley Generals game to rally support for Sylvan Lake. A booth is being planned for Bower Mall this weekend to encourage people to support Sylvan Lake. If you’re interested in volunteering for any of these events, contact Megan Chernoff at 403-396-2793 or megan.chernoff@gmail.com. “It’s all about getting the vote out and moving on to the next round,” stated Parsons. The computer lab at École H. J. Cody High School will be open for the announcement Saturday evening and through the night to Sunday afternoon, said Jas Payne. Approximately 80 computers are available for teams, groups, businesses and others wanting to participate. Contact him at the school, 403-887-2412 or by email at jaspayne@chinooksedge.ab.ca to book times to vote with your group. The Legion is hosting a “Voting Day” party begin-
ning at 5 p.m. Saturday evening where people can gather to watch the announcement and then begin voting. Everyone’s welcome. Another rally is being planned at the multiplex for kids and families also beginning at 5 p.m. That evening there’s a Peewee AA playoff game at 5:45 and a Midget AA playoff game against Red Deer at 8 p.m. Both are sure to excite that evening. The Peewee AA Lakers won their battle Tuesday night in the fifth period defeating the Okotoks Oilers two games to one to advance to the next level. Parsons said the committee is also encouraging people to get involved in team challenges, business challenges, house parties and whatever else they decide to do to generate more interest in helping Sylvan Lake reach its goal of being number one in Canada. “Email friends and family everywhere in the nation and encourage them to support us,” he said. “Send out messages on Facebook and other social media.” Two songs have been created to support Sylvan Lake’s bid for the Kraft Hockeyville 2014 title. One was recorded by West of the Fifth to the tune of Stompin’ Tom Connors Hockey Song. It

Voting continues through Sunday and Parsons said he’s encouraged by support from the ministerial association. He’s calling it Family Voting Day. “Continue to vote as many times as you can,” he said. On Monday, students at École Fox Run School will be participating in a spirit rally. “It’s all in the name of community spirit,” Parsons said. Dale Plante, attending a rural tourism conference in Camrose, has been busy this week promoting Sylvan Lake’s campaign. Over 27 communities had already pledged to support us at press time. Chamber of commerce members are also involved, spreading the enthusiasm for voting and putting up signs to raise visibility of the community’s campaign. Everyone’s votes needed for Sylvan to win top Hockeyville prize Kick off luncheon rallied people to spread message; solicit support
BY TREENA MIELKE BLACK PRESS
A huge wave of support was clearly evident for Sylvan Lake in its bid to win Kraft Hockeyville 2014 at a kick off to the challenge held at the Legion last Wednesday. Not only was the hall filled with local supporters including Mayor Sean McIntyre, several councillors and many local business owners, out-of-town dignitaries and individuals attended the event, as well. Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer and Hockey Alberta president Terry Engen were among those offering support and encouragement. “At the end of the day, tragedy brings a community together,” said Veer, referring to the collapse the arena roof. Her concluding statement, “We will support Sylvan Lake,” was met with a round of applause. “Good luck. Sylvan Lake is a great community and Hockeyville (could be) a very important part of it,”
added Engen. Sherry Haarstad and Lane Moore, who were members of Bentley Hockeyville committee two years ago when the town placed fourth in the competition, complimented volunteers on their hard work. “I am amazed by what you guys have done in the last month,” said Haarstad. She said the quest to win Hockeyville brings a community together. “It is a legacy of community spirit that will stick with you long after.” Moore said having volunteers step up early is very important. “We are here to support you — just ask.” McIntyre said the old arena held many special memories for himself and many others, but it was time to move on. “We’ve all got great memories, but the reason we’re here is to make new memories,” he said. Councillor Graham Parsons, head of the Hockeyville campaign, appealed to the crowd to spread the word that online Hockeyville voting will begin at 10 p.m. on March 8 and run for 48 hours. “It’s important that everyone learn the process of voting. We need
to blast emails all over to let people know what’s going on.” Parson suggested voters use their creativity to figure out the best way to hold voting blitzes. Some local supporters plan to gather at the Legion at 7 p.m. Saturday to kick off the voting. Parsons stressed Sylvan Lake’s success depends on the willingness of its citizens to get involved.
“This is grassroots. It’s you and me,” he said. “It will be a huge community effort, but above all let’s make this fun.” The winner of Kraft Hockeyville will win $100,000 in arena upgrades, the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game and a visit from CBC.
Fresh lobster was on the menu as Sylvan Lake Legion hosted Newfie Night Saturday featuring Atlantic Storm. A guest appearance by ‘Krafty’ the banner promoting Sylvan Lake’s goal to attain the Kraft Hockeyville 2014 title, prompted many of the guests to gather around for a photo. The banner has been circulating far and wide over the past few weeks, promoting the need for everyone to vote and vote often once Sylvan Lake is announced at one of the final 16 communities during Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. Following the announcement there’s a 48 hour voting period to narrow the field to four communities. STEVE DILLS

Horizon physicians spent productive week at Haiti clinic BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A group of physicians from Horizon Family Medicine in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer are back from a trip to Haiti, where they spent a week last month providing medical care to locals. According to Horizon business manager Martin Penninga, the trip was not only extremely productive — he estimates between 350 and 400 patients were treated — but also eye opening for those who travelled there. “For the group, there’s the opportunity to help patients down there, but it also is very impacting to the group that goes down, to come back and realize the wealth that we have and the easy access to health care, and roads that are paved, and all those things that you never think about until you see the other side of the coin,” he said. Four physicians from Horizon’s two clinics in Sylvan Lake and Red Deer were joined by a support team of seven during their one-week stay in Grand-Goâve.
They set up at a clinic operated by Haiti ARISE, a faith-based humanitarian organization, and spent a full week treating patients who may otherwise not have been able to access health care. “The government just does not have funds in order to set up a proper health care system, and so many Haitian patients obviously don’t have access to see a doctor,” said Penninga. “Even if they did on a limited capacity, they can’t afford to see a physician or go to a hospital. There’s definitely a huge, huge gap between health care need and health care providers.” He added that some patients walked for half a day and over mountains just to get the the clinic. Patients ranged in age, from young children to elderly folk. Penninga felt the biggest challenge for the doctors was determining where to begin with the patients — some had no medical history or had never seen a physician before. Others wouldn’t be able to afford to go for followup tests or x-rays, he said. “The need was so great, it was
Dr. Marci Wilson, right, was one of a number of Horizon Family Medicine physicians who travelled to Haiti last month. SUBMITTED very difficult.” The trip to Haiti ARISE was the first for Horizon, which has been supporting the clinic financially since last year. Horizon’s sponsorship, along with funding from other clinics and organizations, allows the ARISE clinic to pay for physicians to man the clinic on a part-time basis. Medical teams from other clinics also visit at various times throughout the year. Although not yet confirmed, Penninga said he’s hoping that Horizon can send another team to the clinic in the future. A tentative date of 2015 has
been set, and interest has already been expressed from physicians willing to partake. “There’s definitely a passion for overseas medical work, especially here in the Red Deer area,” he said. “It’s a very affluent area. We have easy access to health care, and looking around the world, that’s not always the case, and so we want to be able to reach out as we can.” Along with Penninga, the travelling group included Dr. Raymond Comeau, Dr. Mandy Hyde and her husband Daryl, Dr. Chauntille Munchinsky and her husband Justin, Dr. Marci Wilson and her husband Dan, and Denise Hubert.

Canadian Pizza hosting wings eating challenge BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Staff of Canadian Pizza Unlimited (CPU) Sylvan Lake are aiming to boost fundraising for a new arena and curling rink through their wing eating challenge next Saturday (Mar. 15). At that time, contestants will compete against one another to see who can consume 25 chicken wings in the fastest time. With 100 per cent of
proceeds going toward the Multiplex Redevelopment Fund Development Committee, CPU co-manager and event organizer Chris Carriere feels the event will be a true community effort. “(CPU) is all about fun and family and community,” he said. “We wanted to give back to the community that has been supporting us for the last two years. If you don’t support the community, then who’s there to support you?”

Contestants will receive 25 wings and a drink for the $25 entry fee. They’ll compete in groups of five, divided by age, with those finishing in the fastest times crowned winners. Instead of receiving designated prizes, winners will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of items donated by local businesses. The diverse nature of those that have donated will ensure winners have plenty to choose from, said Carriere. More prize donations are being sought, however, as are volunteers to help with running wings, cleaning and refereeing. We’ll be your friend...

To compete in the event, participants must register in person at CPU Sylvan Lake at 1 Sylvan Dr. #4 before the Mar. 11 deadline. Donations must be received by that same date. The event will run from 1-4 p.m, and will take place on CPU’s second anniversary of being in Sylvan Lake. Carriere hopes it will be the first of many, and would like to see it become and annual tradition, supporting a different community organization or initiative every year. “We’re hoping to do this every year on our anniversary,” he said. Carriere can be contacted for more information at 403-872-4666.

Busy couple of months for 4-H Shadow Riders BY DREW STAN SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Intermediate public speaking winners were Emilee Bickley, third; Hayden Cole, second; and Nicole Blair, first.
Senior public speaking winners were Casey Cole, third; Naomi Akkerman, second and Jadey Van der Vlis, first.
January and February were fun months for the 4-H Shadow Riders! We volunteered at Bethany Center in Sylvan Lake helping with baking and bingo with the residents. We really like doing this! The vet clinic and farrier clinic were a success and kids learned lots. The senior drill team did a clinic at Lakedell for their club and we’ve had a couple practices. A drill clinic was put on by some senior members for our level 1-3 kids. This will help them organize the junior drill team. Level 1-3 also had a camp at Benalto with all kinds of fun activities and a sleepover. On Feb. 15 it was 4-H Rebels night and lots of 4-H’ers attended. Public speaking took place Feb. 9 at Benalto and all the speakers did a great job. A dismounted roping clinic took place Feb. 22 in Benalto. They are always fun. We are looking forward to spring and getting riding!

Minor baseball organizers gearing up for another season BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Another minor baseball season is on the horizon, marked by Sylvan Lake Minor Baseball Association’s annual general meeting and registration night at the multiplex last Wednesday. President Darcy Glenn was pleased with turnout for both events. Although he hadn’t yet seen numbers, he believed this year will be a strong one for the association. “We’re hoping to have one extra of our softball teams, and then we either have the same hardball as last year, or we might have one more,” he said. “It’s hard to tell until we go through and put everyone where they need to go.” Another registration night will likely be held in coming weeks. Glenn is advising people to check the association’s website and community notices for updates. The association’s board was also appointed during the meeting, and has a mixture of new and returning members. “I think we have more new members, but we seem to have a small group that have been here for a long time, and we always have some that come and go,” said Glenn.
He added that several changes will be introduced this year, while others are being planned for the future. All except one or two of the association’s teams will receive new uniforms. In previous years, teams have worn similar uniforms to one another, whereas new ones this year will be individual to each team. “Except from last year, the uniforms were pretty much all the same,” said Glenn. “This year, each team has their own colours.” Glenn is concerned, however, with the town’s lack of ball diamonds,
which he said makes scheduling games “a nightmare”. “We’ve only got five diamonds and softball uses all the diamonds two nights of the week,” he said. “We’re pretty limited.” Additional teams could make scheduling even more difficult, he added. “You’ve got your home games, but then somehow you have to put practices in there, too.” This year, there will likely be several teams in the categories of T-Ball, rookie, softball, mosquito and peewee, and one each in bantam and midget.
T-Ball and rookie have a mixture of both male and female players, while softball is strictly for girls — although girls are able to play hardball, if they want to. The season runs from the beginning of May until the end of June. More information is available at www.sylvanlakeminorball.ca. Joining Glenn on this year’s board are Carla Hecht - vice president, Tammie Schwab - treasurer, Debbie MacDonald - registrar, Jodie Turner - secretary, Tom Schmitz - hardball co-ordinator, Andrea Ulseth - softball co-ordinator, Mandy Pollitt - T-Ball and 4-Pitch co-ordinator, Paula Tallon - equipment co-ordinator, Chris Levac - diamond co-ordinator, Tricia Schmitz - uniform co-ordinator, Jolene Frew - umpire co-ordinator, Dawn Burvill - fundraising co-ordinator, Lisa Dunlap - pictures, Annette Patey - parent liaison, and Sash Johannson - data base.

Over the past two weeks a number of Arashi-Do enthusiasts competed in Edmonton at two small tournaments. The first tournament, held at the Arashi-Do Edmonton South on February 22nd, featured a small contingent of just three people, Sensei Ken Sumner, Sempai Nick Mieir and Dayton Copeman. Sensei Ken Sumner, the highest ranked black belt for this tournament, and Sempai Nick both participated in judging. Dayton Copeman was competing in one of his first Karate tournaments. In the under 17 year old intermediate division, he ended up showing great and taking a first in a very close final match for sparring. He also took third in Kata. “It’s great to see him get out and test himself,” said
Sensei Ken Sumner. “It was a pleasure to see him show well and represent Sylvan Lake.” Next, on March 1st, Sensei Ken attended the Edmonton Submission BJJ Series. This is a set of four tournaments spread out throughout the year. After judging the morning, and coaching students from other schools, he competed in the Heavyweight Advanced BJJ division. In a match against former lineman for the University of Calgary Dinos, Corey, Sensei Ken (225 pounds) was outweighed by 40 pounds. Out of the six minute round, Sensei Ken was up on points, until the fifth minute. Losing 4-3 Sensei Ken was happy with the result. “Getting out there and competing is important. You get to see what you are like under stress, and dealing with that adrenaline,” he said after competing. “Also you get to meet some great friends as well.” Sensei Ken Sumner trains and teaches Karate, Muay Thai and BJJ in Sylvan Lake for kids and adults, age 3+, of any fitness level.

Curlers preparing for absence of facility; enjoyed farewell gathering BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Saying goodbye to Sylvan Lake Curling Club will be particularly difficult for people like Bev Jones, who have spent the better part of their lives curling in the soon-to-bedemolished facility. “It’s been a good old girl down there,” said Jones. “It has served well.” Jones was one of many Sylvan Lake curlers who gathered at the club last Friday for a farewell that included food, drinks and entertainment. It marked the end of the facility, which is set to officially close on Mar. 28. While its absence will soon be felt by curlers of all ages in Sylvan Lake and around the province, Jones assured that the memories created
inside it will live on. Her own date back to the 1950s, when she began curling as a high school student. “It wasn’t just a curling rink, it was like a community centre,” she said. “In fact, I think they did call it the community centre at one time.” Over the years, she’s seen curling grow and change along with the club. After spending 1953 and 1954 curling in the then-new curling club, she moved to Lacombe, returning to Sylvan Lake in 1957. She then soon took an extensive break from the sport, and didn’t participate again until her senior years, when she discovered “a whole new game”. “They would use these funny little brushes, and there were some people that had these funny things on their shoes and they could slide halfway
up the ice,” she said. During that time, the club also underwent a number of major changes. “When they got the artificial ice plant, it was altogether different, because you could make the ice and keep the ice, and you didn’t have to worry about what the temperature got to be,” said Jones. A number of other upgrades took place in years following. Current manager Joel Powlesland’s eventual arrival saw the place “spruced up”, according to Jones. Yet, Jones has been aware that the club’s facility would need to be upgraded at some point, and she has mixed feelings about its pending demolition. “I realize it’s showing its age,” she said. “Progress is progress, and if they can get this new facility together and get going on it, I think it will be a real asset to our community.” In the meantime, she’ll continue to curl in sur-
rounding municipalities such as Red Deer and Edmonton. Youths, she fears, will suffer most from the lack of a curling facility in town. “We, as seniors, are fortunate because we don’t work anymore, and can go wherever (to curl), but the younger people and families can’t do that,” she said. “Our youth curlers, we need them. We really need them, and I’m hoping that they’ll be able to have a facility somewhere that they can use.” Nonetheless, she’s grateful that she and other curlers of her generation have had many great years of their own at the facility. “We’ve had a good run,” she said. “We really have.” At press time, Powlesland said he wasn’t sure when demolition would take place, but he was already packing and clearing the building in preparation.
Organizers
Bev Jones, centre seated, was one of many Sylvan Lake curlers who attended a farewell gathering for Sylvan Lake Curling Club’s current facility last Friday night. It’s set to officially close on Mar. 28. STUART FULLARTON
- Sylvan Lake Curling Club Seniors Mixed Bonspiel organizers Gord Brownlee, Sylvia Culshaw, Doug Culshaw and Glayde Ganderton were all smiles Feb. 12 in reaction to the bonspiel’s large turnout. Participating teams came from all over Central Alberta, including Sylvan Lake, Red Deer, Innisfail, Bentley and Rimbey. Because of snow on the roof of the curling club, organizers were unsure whether the bonspiel would go ahead. According to Sylvia Culshaw, they “threw it together” in less than two weeks. Also helping organize were Patricia Brownlee, Doug Norris and Carolyn Moss. STUART FULLARTON PHOTOS

BOOMER Harry Rae After a valiant 12 1/2 year struggle with Alzheimer’s we announce the passing of Harry Boomer of Sylvan Lake, Alberta on Wednesday February 19, 2014. Harry Rae Boomer was born April 13, 1928 in Alix, Alberta. He was raised in Joffre and Red Deer areas. His love for the construction industry started at 16 yrs old when he drove his first caterpillar tractor for Pat Beckley. Soon it became Boomer Bros Construction with his brothers Gerald and Allan. Construction took Harry on many projects all over Alberta and Northern B.C. He loved a challenge. One of his proudest achievements was the development of the Fox Fun Sub Division of Sylvan Lake. His love for dancing and music kept his toes tapping right till the end. Harry’s sense of humor and gentle manner will be deeply missed. He leaves behind his loving wife of 64 years Dorothy(Dot); two children Leonard (Valerie), Donna Boomer; three grandchildren Keir Hyde (Mandy) and great granddaughter Josephine, Mitch Boomer (Kristin) with baby due at the end of March, Lisa Boomer (Cameron). He is also survived by his sisters Vivian and Aileen; brothers Allan (Irene), Darl (Lynette); sister-inlaw Mary Boomer and many cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. Harry was predeceased by his parents Russell and Florence; brothers Leonard and Gerald Boomer. We are very grateful for all the out pouring of love and care from family, friends and wonderful Centennial Center staff at Ponoka. A Celebration Of Harry’s Life will be held at the Alliance Community Church 4404-47 Ave Sylvan Lake on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. Private graveside was held at the Alto Rest Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy memorial donations may be made in Harry’s name to STARS Foundation or the Alzheimer’s Society.
