English names for Christina Lake places greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Fiftieth in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Christina Lake has two English place names along its eastern shore – English Cove and English Point, both apparently named for a group of young men who settled there in the 1890s. According to Lincoln Sandner in Christina Lake: An Illustrated History, “They were, in turn, under the guidance of Angus Stewart ... a very able Scotsman, well-known in this district as

a newspaperman, teacher, scholar, and prospector, who was also the origin of the name Stewart Creek at Chase’s Point.” English Point was first mentioned in a longer form in the Rossland Miner of August 13, 1898: “A store and hotel is being built at English Point Bay Landing. Why not abbreviate the long drawnout name and call it ‘Mugg’s Landing.’ … With its hurriedly constructed hotel, saloon and store nestling under the shade of the tall trees and lapped by the waters of the lake, the scene will be typical of those brought out in the well-known drama

Mugg’s Landing and why wouldn’t it be a good name for the new Christina Lake town?” The English Point post office operated from April 1899 to August 1900, and the English Cove post office, to the southeast of English Point, from March 1909 to August 1911. J.W. Spaulding built several tourist cottages at English Cove as well as a resort hotel, and was appointed postmaster. English Point was originally known as McRae Landing, named for Colin Scott McRae (18601952), a trapper and prospector in the area. It was referred to in ads in the Cas-

Here’s a project for the kids over Spring Break: build a bridge with 100 popsicle sticks and one bottle of glue. Each bridge entered at the Regional Science Fair in Nelson on April 12 will be tested to see how much weight it can bear before it fails.

Cash prizes awarded for the strongest bridges. All entrants under the age of 19 will be eligible to win fabulous draw prizes. Moms and Dads can enter a bridge too. The contest is sponsored by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. Bridges must be built

to fit the testing device, using only kits provided. These kits are available for $5 each at locations in each of Trail, Rossland, Castlegar, Grand Forks, Nelson, and Creston. For details search “Kootenay Bridge Contest” on Google, and follow the APEGBC link.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week March 14, 2014

Tip of the Week: The last official days of the season signal a time to reflect, in the light of the Full Moon (March 16). Mercury is in the final days of its shadow period during which time it recovers ground lost while retrograde. Confused thoughts, perceptions and communications and disruptions with technology are some of the main issues that synchronize with this cycle. Now Mercury will re-enter Pisces (March 17 - April 7), one of its more challenging sign positions. This transit has been compared to trying to communicate underwater. Well, that is a bit exaggerated but pay attention to see the synchronicities. So it could feel like Mercury is still retrograde until April 7 when it enters Aries. Positively, it can prove useful for imaginative thinking but can be a deterrent to practical productivity. Mars then Saturn turned retrograde on March 1st and 2nd respectively. I offered a review for Mars in my February 28 Horoscope so I will direct you there to learn more. Yet, of additional note is that it has been in very close conjunction with the Moon`s North Node in Libra ever since mid-February. This brings the `iron fist, velvet glove` theme resonant with Libra to the fore. Coupled with Uranus in Aries, the sign Mars rules, which presents an unpredictable and potentially violent theme pattern, it is not surprising that we are seeing the synchronicity in the uprisings in Kiev and then the Russian military presence in other parts of the Ukraine right away thereafter. That energy pattern is bound to manifest somehow and somewhere and in a big way and the basic themes of military muscle maneuvers is bound to continue. As for Saturn in Scorpio (Oct. 2012 – Sept. 2015), this cycle can basically be described as metamorphic. Yes, the world is changing deeply and quickly. When retrograde the plot thickens and deepens as it activates a determined search of meaning and truths that transcend outer realities and appearances. Outwardly this aspect can produce fixed attitudes and a crusading spirit… Stay tuned!

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

If you feel the need for and have any opportunity to get some extra rest or retreat this week, take it. With spring just a week away you will feel a new surge of energy begin to emerge. Yet, this week is probably best used to recharge. Quality time shared with friends might suffice. Yet, a solo and silent retreat that would allow you to contemplate, reflect and re-center is your best be TWhatever else you have done up to now or achieved, in certain respects you have been preparing the ground to implement plans that have been brewing for a long time. Over the coming months especially your will, drive and ambition will increase. Set clear boundaries, do not over give or over commit to others or ask or expect too much from them. Just do it! Whether you want, need, like it or not, you are getting extra attention now. All being well you want it and the time is also right to ask for recognition, favours and earned rewards. You are finally rising out of what may have felt like a foggy period. Now your visions and aspirations to realize a brighter future are coming to full force.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

A rather deep cycle continues. At best, you are heeding the call to restore your faith and vigour. This is a good time to listen more and speak less. You may feel needier than usual, more than you have for quite some time. Tending to home projects, hobbies, renovations and/or early spring cleaning may be just what you need.

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

Tending to some of the deeper aspects of life continues. This includes rich exchanges of dialogue where realizations are shared. These have been brewing for many months, perhaps even years. Your ability to express your thoughts and feelings well enough so others understand you may require extra effort. Ask questions and invite feedback for best results.

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

Engaging with others in deep and meaningful ways is a likely theme of late. You mind focus is sharp and you are able to articulate your feelings more clearly. Yet unless your attitude is to share, give and serve with your thoughts and ideas versus tell in a merely factual manner, your communications will likely miss the mark. Aim to build rapport

Mixing work with play does have its merits some times, like now. For you play may mean socializing and/or engaging in creative and artistic activity. You may feel impatient with people and circumstances however, so make extra efforts to trust in and cooperate with the flow. At deeper levels, tending to your health and the related quality of your lifestyle is extra important. Your current focus is lingering somewhere between a creative review of past experiences and plans and ambitions for future action. Clearing, cleaning and settling unfinished business is likely. Creating a new working space is featured and may include mental and emotional states as much as shifts in the outer environment. Expect it to take a couple of weeks or so to catch-up.. Reconnecting within to rediscover what you think, feel and believe continues. This includes deepening bonds with family. A lively time interacting with friends is also featured. Exchanges of thoughts and feelings regarding future plans are highlighted. These may still be in the dream stage. Yet, good ideas will be conceived. Pay attention and take note.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

A philosophical and reflective cycle continues. A deepened search for truth, meaning, purpose or at least for answers is featured. This trend will continue for a few weeks. Part of this quest includes a review and cultivation of your own talents and the prospects of accessing the skills and resources of others. But you may have to widen your scope to get what you need.

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

Some new developments have begun amidst the completion phase of others. Yet, you may still be contending with lingering uncertainties. You may get the feeling that spring is delayed. This could produce frustrations. By mid-April latest you will enter a dynamic learning curve. Accept that this is all a foundation building phase which stands to stretch into early May.

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

The feeling of spring thaw may be arriving early for you. You may wish the pace was slower. Yet, your ability to focus, manifest and get things done may feel slower these days so this early start can be seen to have advantages. Meanwhile, increasing your outreach to cooperate and collaborate with others is important and the timing looks good.

Pipe organ a dream with trumpet and voice jim sinclair West Kootenay Advertiser

A special afternoon concert was held Sunday in Trail, at a special location with a high-end classic pipe organ. Trail United Church was the venue for a performance arranged as part of Castlegar’s Kootenay Gallery TD Bank Concert series and it was a pleasure for

about 60 people to take in. Featured, with radiant sunlight streaming through the stained glass windows, was Marcus Goddard, an internationally respected trumpet player and bright, imaginative composer. Joining Goddard on piano and organ was Candy Siu who possesses a Master of Music degree in pi-

ano accompaniment from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, England. Rounding out the entertainment, local Grammy-nominated soprano Noemi Kiss who added an impressive and exciting level of vocal expertise to the occasion. On the playbill was an enchanting assortment of classical, modern, and

Goddard-composed selections. The sound was exquisite, well-balanced and technically dazzling. Emcee Nicola Everton, artistic director of the Gallery’s TD Bank Concert series was pleased with the turnout, and told the audience the strikingly capable venue may well be used for more such events in the future.

Arts & Culture Artists invited to take part in tour

Spring is Nature’s way of saying:

VALERIE ROSSI

Columbia Basin artists are invited to step outside their studios and invite the public inside. Registrations are being accepted for artists and heritage venues in the Columbia Basin to participate in the two-day Columbia Basin Culture Tour (CBCT) taking place this summer. “Normally the culture tour is a partnership between us and the participants and we always do a survey at the end to see how their experience is,” explained Krista Patterson, executive director for the Columbia Kootenay Culture Alliance. “For quite a number of participants, they get a lot of people through their doors and for some of them who basically promote it as their big open studio event of the year, they make a high level of sales, so it really varies.” Trail potter Fran Moll has been consistently involved in the event since the beginning. She sees it as a great advertisement tool as well as a chance to share her joy of pottery with the community. “It’s not that I’m trying to make a living out of pottery but I’m a very productive potter so I do have to get the product out,” she said. “And it’s a lot of fun.” She generally gets a dozen to 20 people stop in to her studio, located in her East Trail home. Last year, she set up reduced items on her front lawn to entice people onto her property and into her carport, where she had a pottery wheel set up. She also invited participants into her basement stu-

dio where she further demonstrated her skill and talked about the craft. The CBCT is a self-guided tour showcasing local arts, culture and heritage offered at no charge to the public. Tour directories will be available as a guide to visit studios, exhibitions, museums, art galleries, cultural centres or heritage sites throughout the Columbia Basin during weekend of August 9-10, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The tour allows visitors to meet the participants behind the scenes, visit studios that may not regularly be open to the public, purchase work directly from the artists and visit art galleries, museums and cultural centres to view special interpretive displays, archives, demonstrations or performances. Early registration is $40 and ends March 31, with regular registration going for $50 from April 1-14. The registration fee in-

cludes inclusion in a printed directory, a web page profile, placement in an online interactive map, event signage and mention in a province-wide promotional campaign. Participating individuals and venues must be located in the Canadian Columbia Basin, the southeast corner of the province roughly bordered by the communities of Valemount, Golden, Elkford, Creston, Rossland, Arrow Lakes and Revelstoke. Although not in the Basin, the communities of Grand Forks and Christina Lake are again invited to participate this year. To register visit: www.cbculturetour.com or for more information call: 1-250-5055505 (toll free at 1-877-5057355). The CBCT is a project of the Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and is funded by Columbia Basin Trust, which supports the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of the Columbia Basin.

So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substantially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada. Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1. It comes with a 228hp 2.0-litre turbocharged gas engine capable of hitting 100 km/h in less than six seconds. I will reveal it will sell for more than $40,000 in the UK. It’s fast, it’s a premium offering and I’ll eat my hat if it shows up here. All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here. And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle. And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Safety Tip: Spring break is a popular time of the year for a getaway. If you’re planning a long drive across the province, remember that winter tires could still be needed on certain highways. It’s also an ideal time to get a qualified mechanic to check your vehicle’s suspension and steering.

Introducing Our New

WHEEL ALIGNMENT MACHINE for fast accurate results every time

With the Vancouver International Auto Show just around the corner, I thought I would share my list of exciting new SUVs that are available. Tough to nail down just one but I am sure one of these would spark some interest. 2014 Ford Explorer Sport is a performance version of its popular SUV. The headlights and taillights have been blacked out to give it a sporty appearance. 20-inch painted and machined wheels allow room for the larger brakes that help it stop faster and improve performance when towing. The engine is an impressive 3.5 litre, twin turbocharged EcoBoost V6, producing a whopping 365 horsepower and 350 pound feet of torque with a 6 speed automatic transmission. To say this is quick off the line is an understatement. The Explorer also features a terrain management system that lets you select between sand, snow, mud, or hill descent. $46,999

Here’s why wheel alignment matters: • Better Mileage • Longer Tire Wear

Pick of the Week: PassoCorto designed in Italy for Korean car manufacturer Hyundai

You could be forgiven for thinking this car was the latest example of an Italian supercar. Well it is and it isn’t. It’s a PassoCorto designed in Italy for Korean car manufacturer Hyundai. It’s the result of a competition staged by Hyundai at the famous Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Turin, Italy, to create a sports car that would appeal to Generation Y consumers. The final concept was displayed on the IED stand at the 2014 Salon International de l’Auto in Geneva, Switzerland. The brief, drawn up by Hyundai’s European R&D centre in Rüsselheim, Germany, called for the 16 students on the Transportation Design masters’ course at IED to draw and design the car

of their dreams. The car should be one they would want to buy and drive, targeting Generation Y – consumers born between the 1980s and the early years of this millennium, who have grown up with computers and are used to being connected at all times. The result is a dramatic, compact and ultralightweight sports car concept called PassoCorto – Italian for ‘short wheelbase’. The compact two-seater weighs just 840 kg thanks to its carbon fibre chassis and is powered by a rear-mid mounted four-cylinder in-line 1,6-litre bi-turbo engine. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Common misconceptions about fuel efficiency Fuel efficiency is an important issue for car buyers, and understandably so. Conserving fuel is good for drivers’ budgets and the planet, so the concept of fuel efficiency would seem to benefit everyone. But just because fuel efficiency is a good concept does not mean there are not misconceptions about it among drivers and automotive professionals alike. The following are some of the more widely held misconceptions about fuel efficiency. * Full tanks conserve fuel. Many people have long believed that a nearly full tank of gas means the fuel within that tank is less likely to evaporate, and that tanks that half-full tanks are losing gas to evaporation. Though this might have been the case years ago, today’s vehicle’s are smarter than ever before, and

driveway.ca

their fuel systems are designed with vapor recovery systems so drivers traveling around with tanks that are closer to empty than full aren’t losing gas to evaporation. * Manual transmissions are more fuel efficient. Technology can once again be credited with turning conventional wisdom on its head. In the past, manual transmission vehicles might have been more fuel efficient because drivers could more efficiently control engine revving with a 5-speed manual transmission than they could with the standard 3-speed automatic transmission. However, automatic transmissions have evolved over the years, and they are now more adept at controlling revs and conserving fuel than many drivers of manual transmission vehicles.

maintained vehicle should not grow less fuel efficient over time. * Shifting into neutral while stopping saves gas. This is another misconception that was once true but no longer applies thanks to advances in technology. When engines still had carburetors, shifting into neutral might have helped conserve fuel by stopping the flow of gas into the engine while the car was idling. However, fuel injection systems are now computerized and capable of sensing when an engine is revving above idle. This shuts off the fuel injectors, preventing gas from being injected into the engine and preventing gas from being wasted while the vehicle is stopped as a result. Taking steps to conserve fuel is a good way for drivers to save money and benefit the environment. However, some of the conventional means to conserving fuel are no longer viable.

* When you fill up matters. Some drivers have long believed that filling up during the cooler hours of the day earns them more gas than filling up when the temperatures are at their peak. This theory traces its origins to the fact that liquids are at their most dense when they are cool. But today’s filling stations store their gas in tanks beneath the ground, which is why you might see a tanker emptying its contents into the ground at the filling station. These underground tanks are insulated from temperature swings, so you aren’t likely to receive any more gas by filling up in the morning than you will when filling up at night. * An old vehicle is destined to be less fuel efficient. Any product that is allowed to fall into disrepair will prove less efficient than products that are well maintained, and cars are no exception. A poorly maintained car will not operate at peak fuel efficiency because it’s likely being forced to work harder to get down the street than it would if it was well kept. But a well-

Bob McHugh For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Refreshed RX350 ups the sportiness factor elegant. For buyers that are looking for a bit more performance from the RX, the F-Sport package adds visual and emotional punch. Looks Over the last several years, Lexus has taken a more aggressive design approach with its latest introductions. The front grille is more dynamic, designed to mimic a spindle used in a fabric loom. This is a tip of the hat to the origins of the Toyota Company as a textile maker. LED marker lights and a deeper chin spoiler frame the more aggressive grille. The larger 19-inch wheels come in a smoked satin finish and the suspension is tweaked for more

By Zack Spencer

2014 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport Toyota is known for building high quality cars with fantastic resale value and has grabbed more Canadian Black Book “Best Retained Value” Awards than any other manufacturer. In the Lexus line of cars and SUVs, the best seller by far is the RX 350 mid-sized SUV. Built using parts common to other Lexus and Toyota products, it represents a lot of what Toyota/Lexus is doing right. The engine is powerful but still thrifty enough for most families, the space is generous and the design is

performance. Around back, all RX 350 models come with a power rear lift gate. One of the reasons the RX is so popular is the aggressive starting price. The base model, with the same engine as this F-Sport, starts at $46,150 making it a very attractive alternative to buying a spendy German SUV. The F-Sport model is $55,400 but comes almost fully loaded, with only two options available, the Intuitive Parking Assist and Heads up Display, which brings the price to $58,850 Inside The 2014 RX is a mid-cycle refresh of the model that was introduced in 2010. Unfortunately, Lexus didn’t

refresh the inside of the cabin at all, keeping the updates to the exterior and driveline. Not to say that the inside is a disappointment, rather that some things could be tweaked. I’ll start with the positives. The cabin has plenty of room for a family of four with a big back seat and lots of legroom. The materials used are of the highest order and the RX put together well. The controller for the communications and navigation system is unique in the industry, mimicking a computer mouse. It feels very natural and the driver rarely needs to take their eyes of the road. continued on page 13

2014 LEXUS RX F-SPORT

The array of buttons and their less than logical layout could do with an update. The F-Sport comes which heated and cooled seats but it took me about five minutes to locate the switch in the centre armrest. The dial for the tuner is as far away from the driver as it could be and the seating position is very high. Drive At the heart of all RX 350 models is a very versatile 3.5L V6 engine with 270hp. The F-Sport is made sportier by the inclusion of an 8-speed automatic transmission instead of the regular 6-speed unit. By adding two more gears this new model really jumps away from a stop and pulls very well to highway speeds. Two extra gears make a world of difference, helping to bring the continued from page 12

Refreshed RX350 ups the sportiness factor engine to life and improving fuel economy. The suspension has also been modified to include a sport tuned dampers and springs. I could certainly tell this RX is different, in some city conditions, the ride can be very choppy and not what typical Lexus buyers would expect. The up side is that open road driving is much more sure-footed and dynamic. When the RX is thrown off-centre the top heavy nature of the RX shows its head, the centre of gravity feels much higher than some of the other sporty models in this class.

$

Verdict The RX350 is the best seller in the Lexus line for good reason. It offers the same interior space as a mid-sized sedan but sits higher for greater outward viability, comes standard with all-wheel drive and has a high resale value. The RX 350 F-Sport takes all the goodness of the regular RX and makes it a bit more aggressive, especially in the acceleration front. Potential buyers would be well advised to drive both the regular model and this sportier version to see if you can live with the choppy ride, it really is dramatic. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 3.5L V6 with 270hp Fill-up: 11.2L/7.7L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $46,150-$55,400

There was something familiar about the first car I encountered in the giant Palexpo show buildings. Ah yes, a European version of the trusty Honda Civic – Canada’s hottest seller in that market segment. I am sure Honda Canada would sell more if they resembled the very hot Type R concept, which is destined to be a racer. Yes, the new North American Civic is sportier than the last generation but the Euro versions always seem that bit sharper in design. Next up was the Mazda Hazumi hatchback, expected successor to the current Mazda2 and likely to adopt the same numeric moniker. The concept vehicle has an all-new 1.5-litre SKYACTIV-D diesel engine. Citroen no longer sells in North America though periodically we hear rumours of a return by the French manufacturer and its home rivals, Peugeot and Renault. Their lines are so different to the often indistinguishable small cars we get. Some of the French creations are positively funky and I found myself gawping at such an example in the new Citroen C4 Cactus. It’s designed to challenge the likes of the Ford Focus and the VW Golf. It uses lightweight materials extensively, including an aluminum hood, which means it sips gas. The rubberized pads along the side would be perfect for people who regularly have close encounters with garage doorframes! General Motors looks to penetrate the difficult younger buyer marked with its Opel/Vauxhall Adam. It’s dressed up in interesting colours but it’s what is under the hood that makes it really interesting. It has a variety of bigger engines as options but its smallest engine is a new 1.0-litre, three-cylinder gas engine, mated to a six-speed manual transmission, with the pulling power of

1.6-litre power plant. Fuel consumption is expected to be a miserly 4.5 L/100 km (combined city highway). It may show up here in some form but right now GM has more than its fair share of small cars.
