Community spirit, enthusiasm and drive were evident in Sylvan Lake’s bid for the Kraft Hockeyville title over the weekend. Sylvan Lake was among the Top 16 communities when the first round of voting began Saturday evening. For 48 hours votes were accumulated by dedicated people who believe our community can win. Organizers fully expect the tremendous effort by residents, friends and neighbours from Sylvan and many other communities will vault us into the Top 4 when the next announcement is made during Hockey Night in Canada this Saturday (Mar. 15). Now we need to spread our tentacles wider and garner support from people across the country, encouraging them to support

Sylvan Lake in the next round of voting, said Sylvan’s committee chairman Graham Parsons. Another intense 48 hour period of voting will begin at 10 p.m. MST Saturday night and Sylvan Lake (of course we’ll be there) needs to tabulate hundreds of thousands of votes to move into the Top 2 which will be announced Mar. 22. Then, when we’re the only western community, competing against an eastern community, we again need 48 hours of commitment to put us over the top in voting, said Parsons. He asked everyone to contact friends and business associates across Canada to gather support and encourage voting for Sylvan Lake. Do it now, don’t wait until the announcement, he added. Be prepared! See more Hockeyville stories on page 3.

Entertained - Two of the belly dancing students from Rocky Mountain House who performed at the Hafla were Shay Forth and Gina Merrriman. See the story and another picture on page 12.

Sylvan preparing for next round of voting in Hockeyville competition we need support of people across Canada to win the grand prize BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Ripples of anticipation are percolating through Sylvan Lake as residents eagerly await an announcement Saturday evening that the community is among the Top 4 in the Kraft Hockeyville competition. Cheers rang out at the Legion and multiplex last Saturday evening when there was a brief announcement during the Hockey Night in Canada game that Sylvan Lake had made the cut and was in the Top 16. Then people sprang to action, voting again and again (yes, you can vote as many times as you want). Organizers confidently believe the tremendous community spirit, drive and enthusiasm will propel Sylvan Lake into the Top 4 when the next announcement is made during the Hockey Night in Canada game this Saturday. Then there’s another intense 48 hour period to narrow the field to the Top 2 who will be announced the following Saturday followed by a final round of voting. In conjunction with the next round, a Kraft Hockeyville community dinner is being planned for H. J. Cody School this Saturday, from 5-7:30 p.m. featuring Kraft Dinner and weiners. Flashback Freddie will be there to entertain and there will be lots of community spirit at this family event. Come and enjoy. Banners and signs will be spread throughout Sylvan Lake and surrounding communities, by volunteers, encouraging people to vote as the organization ramps up its efforts for the next round. In all of the promotion which is taking place to rally Sylvan Lake and our supporters, it’s heartening to see the community spirit flourishing.

Supported

- Each year around this time, 10-12 Grade 5 students are taken to a Red Deer Rebels game with staff from the school. While there, they had a chance to support the Kraft Hockeyville movement. REGAN LYNN

At École H. J. Cody High School, the computer lab, with 80 computers, was open for voters through the night Saturday and then again Sunday, closing about 5 p.m. that day. Jas Payne estimated over 20,000 votes were logged Saturday night, partly by a group of 13 year old girls who held a ‘slumber party’ voting non-stop for six hours. “It was fantastic,” he said. About 30-40 people spent time Sunday voting. Then Monday, Cody students kept the lab busy by voting. The lab will be open again this weekend for people to vote. Already some of the teams have been asking about space. Contact Payne at 403-887-2412 or by email at jaspayne@chinooksedge.ab.ca to book times. Volunteers distributed voting information at the Red Deer Rebels and Bentley Generals games last weekend and through booths at the home show and Bower Mall. The Sylvan Lake Hockeyville Facebook page, maintained by Dianne Womacks, has been a hub of quickly evolving information throughout, attracting over 5,800 likes already. One of the questions posed was, ‘Where are you voting from?’. Over 150 people responded from communities such as Fort St. John, Courtenay, Kamloops, Campbell River, Salt Spring Island, Terrace and Sparwood in BC, Watrous, Yorkton and Kamsack, SK, Whitehorse, Yukon, Bloodvein and McCreary MB, Sarnia, Burlington, Belleville, Ingersoll and Stirling, ON, New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and other Canadian locales. The campaign’s reach has also taken its message to other countries with voters reporting from several locations in Arizona, Florida, California and South Carolina. England, Costa Rica, Belize, Japan, New Zealand, Columbia and Mexico were some of the other international locations where snowbirds and former Sylvan residents reported voting. Some of the posts on the page have also provided emotional reactions, added Womacks. She noted one from Trev Smith who wrote “Got over a hundred votes in while I’m on location waiting on a rig until the net just got too slow to keep going. Someone has to take over for me!” The responses were great. “Got your back,” wrote Debbie Thomas. “Got it

covered Trev,” added Sylvia Spasic. “I keep going Trev,” wrote MC Clarke. Mackenzie Rogers posted, “I have not stopped all day, I got it covered!” Spasic also posted a heartwarming story on the page about her thoughts on the last couple of days (see separate article). Parsons and musician Flashback Freddie conducted interviews with radio stations Monday in the Red Deer area, receiving fantastic support and repeated messages throughout the day. Freddie wrote one of the two songs promoting Sylvan Lake’s Hockeyville message. The other was written and recorded by the local band West of the

Fifth. Both may be viewed on the Facebook page. Now the goal, following Saturday’s announcement, is to rally enough voters to push Sylvan Lake into the Top 2 and then in the final round of voting to a decisive win. Reach out to your friends and acquaintances, said Parsons. We’re going to need hundreds of thousands of votes from across the country to win. “Email friends and family everywhere in the nation and encourage them to support us,” he said. “Send out messages on Facebook and other social media. We can do this Sylvan Lake.”

Just like Christmas — waiting and wondering BY SYLVIA SPASIC SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

What excitement the last three days!! Feels like just before Christmas and everyone is busy letting Kraft Hockeyville know that they have the heart and community spirit for this grand title and prize. There was such a hush over Sylvan Lake, all you could hear was the tap, tap, tap, tap, enter/return. Traffic was at a halt last night; everyone set their Facebook page to Sylvan Lake Hockeyville 2014 while they voted. They kept us informed on all the families from all parts of the world that were busy tapping along with us. Even the ‘lone rigger’ wasn’t forgotten when he put out a plea

that he needed us to all chip in some extra votes in case he was going to lose his connection way up north in the bush. There will be more great stories to read the next few days before we hear if we have made it to the next and final rounds … The next few days will be like waiting to open that large gift under the tree … wanting to peek inside, but knowing we will have to just wait. So, in the mean time, I will just keep following Sylvan Lake Hockeyville 2014 and get to know more about the spirit in my community and all the other communities out there with Sylvan Lake Pride. Let residents express opinion on cost of new arena, curling rink Editor’s Note: This letter is being reprinted since key sections were left out when it was typeset, causing confusion. They’re highlighted in italics. Our apologies to writer Ted Klassen. Dear Editor, Let’s talk about the newly proposed sports arena. Sylvan Lake needs to replace our now condemned curling rink and we also need to replace the hockey rink that, sadly, lost its roof. These two ideas are true. I wonder if we are going down the right road as we work to accomplish filling this need. Allow me to deviate just a bit. When most of the citizens of Sylvan Lake decide to choose a new home to live in, if money is easily available and not going to impact them much, I bet lots of us would choose to buy on the lake and live in a house with a swimming pool and have a nice big boat tied to our private dock. But we don’t go that route because we don’t want to go that far over our heads in debt. I ask our present mayor and council to take another look at this entire direction because what

if the taxpayers in Sylvan Lake don’t want to go this much farther into debt. The new sports arena is going to cost around $20 million. That is money we just don’t have right now so we are going to have to borrow. Since we are going to replace our curling rink and our hockey rink now, why not put it to a plebiscite so the taxpayers of Sylvan Lake can make the decision as to how much we are prepared to spend to do this. Just put it in our utility statement next month and everyone will be able to answer yes or no to this $20 million venture. But give us the facts so we can make a good decision. Let us know how much extra each business and household in Sylvan Lake are going to have to pay each year for the next five or 10 years. If the answer is a majority ‘yes’, then we go ahead. But if the answer is a majority ‘no’, then we need to look at alternative ways to accomplish the same thing. Here is one alternative. We already know that a new six-sheet curling rink constructed on the same site as the old one

The Improvement Society, in effect, gives to the War Veterans for their own use, their property adjoining the Municipal office. Veterans present expressed their appreciation of this very generous offer. Organization followed so that the offer could be officially accepted. The following officers were then elected: President, Charles S. Palmer; Vicepresident, D. McCutcheon; Secretarytreas., Michael Fisher; executive, Robert Speedie and Doug. Wyatt.

now stands on would cost $3.5 million. We also know that to build only the curling ice area with its covered structure would cost $1.5 million. The ice area is pretty much the same as would be required to house and replace our fallen hockey rink. What I am saying is, we could spend $3.5 million for the new curling rink and $1.5 million for the new hockey rink. This way still gives Sylvan Lake community a new curing rink and a new hockey rink. We can afford $5 million and, furthermore, this way would probably give us our new facilities far sooner, possible even within one year instead of the two or three being mentioned for the construction time required to complete the much more complex $20 million arena. I think town council should find out what the voters want. Please, let us decide. Ted Klassen, Sylvan Lake

The offer of the Improvement Society, which included a substantial cash donation (to be used for redecorating, etc.) was then gratefully accepted. A 25 year lease will be prepared.

reasons why you should advertise in your local newspaper

1.CREDIBILITY

Polls show people believe newspapers offers the most believable advertising. The offer is there to be read over and over again. It doesn’t intrude uninvited and then vanish.

2.ASSURANCE

3. PERMANENCE Newspapers allow readers time. • Scott’s No Frills • Seabreeze Drycleaners • Serenalla Salon and Spa • Servus Credit Union • Shoppers Drug Mart • Sobey’s Sylvan Lake • Spinnakers Coffee Bar • Squeeky Kleen Car & RV Wash • Suzie Q Dance Band • Sylvan Agencies • Sylvan Auto Centre • Sylvan Lake Barber Shop • Sylvan Lake News • Sylvan Lake RV & Auto • Sylvan Sleep Centre Inc • Sylvan Travel • Sylvan Truck Ranch • Syn-Oil Fluids Inc • TD Bobcat Services • The Canadian Brew House • The Paint Shop • The Rental Store • The UPS Store • The Whole Show • Tim Hortons • TMS Wireless Ltd • Town of Sylvan Lake • UFA • Unique Elevations Inc • Value Drug Mart • Walmart Supercentre • Woofs & Purrs

Readers have the time to digest and consider an advertising offer at their leisure. Consumers need not be in the right place at the right time to see or hear the advertiser’s message. Studies prove that our papers are kept longer than a week and are read by more than one person in a household.

4. LOCAL COVERAGE Newspapers occupy a unique

position in reader’s lives. Newspapers contain news on local people and events, while providing the most reliable source of in depth local coverage of everything in your community, including what businesses are offering this week.

Hafla and belly dancing enjoyed by sold out audience BY MONICA SCHMIDT SPECIAL TO SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Oops, you missed it again … It was Hafla-time at Sylvan Lake Legion, Feb. 22. Gabriellah and her daughter, Julia, made winter go away as they danced their first-ever duet in front of an electric, sold-out audience. Belly dancers from all over Central Alberta,

dressed in their finest costumes wooed their audience through the entire evening. Not to forget, a fabulous feast (as always), hot music and the “best” door prizes ever. If that did not give you hope that winter will ever end, you’ll have to wait ‘til May. Yes, preparations for the spring Hafla have begun. But it’s not too late to join. Spring Hafla will be held May 31 at the Legion. Reserve your tickets soon or they’ll be gone!

Pattern Book to be reviewed over next seven months BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

During their regular meeting Monday night, Sylvan Lake councillors: • approved a work plan to review the Pattern

Book over the next seven months. The book outlines urban design guidelines which regulate development within the Waterfront Direct Control District, which is basically most of the area north of the railway tracks. Used in conjunction with the town’s Land Use Bylaw, it provides building development regulations including height, scale, massing and setbacks as well as uses and architectural character for the downtown. A timeline with the plan proposes a meeting with developers and stakeholders in April and an open house to review proposed changes in July. • approved second and third reading of a

bylaw to increase the rate at the Waste Transfer Site. Sylvan Lake residents will now pay $74 per tonne while non-residents will pay $130 per tonne to dispose of solid waste at the facility. There is a $5 minimum charge for residential waste disposal but no charge for yard waste, paint, tires, e-waste and other recyclables. The previous rates were $70 and $122 respectively. The last increase was in 2006. • awarded a contract to Miller Dickinson Blais to create an invest-

ment attraction strategy and implementation plan at a cost of $44,625 plus GST. Nine proposals were received and evaluated. They also approved a project work plan which indicates the work is aimed to “accelerate the Town of Sylvan Lake’s ability to attract investment. The plan is to provide “short, medium and long-term projects, tools and resources that will prepare the community for industrial investment attraction as a targeted means to diversify the economy.

Call for Expression of Interest to be a Candidate for Participation in Regional Plan Review Panels The Government of Alberta is continuing its work on developing seven regional plans under the direction of the Land-use Framework for Alberta. Each plan provides the context and guidance for land and natural resource use in each region to help achieve Alberta’s long-term social and economic goals based on a foundation of good environmental management. Regional plans are developed in consultation with Albertans and become legal instruments once approved by Cabinet. As such, the Alberta Land Stewardship Act (ALSA) includes provisions for requesting a review of a regional plan or regional plan amendment. To support this review process, 14032DA1 the Government of Alberta is creating a standing roster of candidates from which it will select members to participate in review panels for regional plans once the plans have been implemented. The role of the panel will be to consider review requests and provide recommendations to the Government of Alberta. Candidates from the roster will be invited to participate in panels based on the subject matter of the review and the candidate’s area of expertise. Once the roster is established, candidate names will sit on the roster for between two to three years. The roster will consist of a broad range of stakeholders and as such, individuals with a background or interest in property rights, First Nations, business, environment and rural or urban interests are encouraged to apply. For further information on candidate requirements and to submit your interest for participation in Regional Plan Review Panels, please visit the Land-use Framework website at: http://www.landuse.alberta.ca.

Marina project defeated; then councillors waivered; will be on next agenda Council defeated a recommendation to approve the development application by a vote of 4-3 BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A proposal to accept ‘cash in lieu’ of providing required parking stalls in a new marina development proved the breaking point for Sylvan Lake councillors Monday night. They defeated a recommendation to approve the development application by a vote of 4-3. Mayor Sean McIntyre and councillors Graham Parsons and Chris Lust voted in favour of approval while councillors Matt Prete, Megan Chernoff, Dale Plante and Jas Payne voted against. The proposal was to create 25 row houses on the marina property and maintain the existing commercial building. The proposed three storey buildings would be 36 feet in height. Approval was previously granted for a 40 unit condominium building of four storeys and 62 feet in height. That approval remains in effect until a new proposal is approved or the two year period of the approval expires. Through a complex set of calculations, town staff determined the new proposal was deficient by 11 parking stalls and proposed the town accept $5,500 per stall from the developer to be used to provide parking elsewhere in the area. This troubled councillors who spoke against the proposal. Prete said if the town took the cash they’d be accepting responsibility for providing the parking. They’ve already taken responsibility for

providing parking for trucks and trailers of people launching boats from the marina, he indicated. “I’m not prepared to take any more responsibility for providing parking stalls for that development. For $60,000, trying to find parking down there is not worth it. Developers have a right to develop but we have to balance the public interest.” Another part of the equation suggested a relaxation on the need for one parking stall for each of the 174 boat slips. Based on research of other communities when the first approval was granted, and a condition of that approval, town staff proposed granting a relaxation of parking for the marina to require one stall for every two boat slips. In the view of Plante, the biggest issue is parking and the relaxation of 2-1 on marina parking. He proposed that rather than a 50 per cent relaxation, the marina parking requirement be relaxed by 25 per cent. He agreed with fellow councillors on the deficient 11 parking stalls — that they should be provided on the site. “I find it hard to believe it’s adequate to have one parking stall for two boat slips,” he said. “The intention is to have all the boat slips sold.” He suggested that would lead to more people travelling to the marina to use their boats. Chernoff wasn’t concerned about the marina parking but was against accepting cash for the 11 stalls. Parsons supported the proposal. He indicated it’s significantly smaller than the previous proposal, providing less

height and more view corridors to the lake. He felt staff had done lots of research and a good job protecting the town’s interests. “I’m in favour of it.” “When a proposal came up a few years ago two main problems were parking and massing (size of building),” said McIntyre. “When we talk about a happy medium, 36 feet feels like a happy medium. I’m happy to see a second proposal with 25 units rather than 40, that’s less impact on traffic.” Payne added, “we want to strongly encourage development without encouraging more problems. This is a wonderful development being proposed but it’s going to create problems for us, we don’t want problems. We need to hold firm the idea that cash is not going to help us find parking spots. They have to have sufficient parking.” Folllowing defeat of the motion to approve the application, Al Laplante, representing Sylvan Lake Harbour Ltd., and his associates, left council chamber, but councillors then began to wrestle with how to move forward. McIntyre tried to find consensus on what it was councillors actually wanted

from the developer. They discussed asking the developer to provide the 11 stalls required on the site, on another site within a specific distance or somewhere adjacent to the marina. “Considering that what we’re getting is significantly better than what’s been approved, I’m open to the possibility of reconsideration,” said Payne after discussion. Plante said it’s unfortunate the process didn’t allow councillors to have a presentation from the developer to get an idea of the scope of the project and have their questions answered. But he continued to state, “I don’t believe we’re doing justice in getting just the 11 (additional) parking spots on this site. Fifty per cent is extreme in terms of relaxation. I’m trying to come up with something that’s more reasonable. When you add the 11 stalls that’s way over 60 per cent.” He also noted that a lot of taxpayers up and down the street and on side streets would be inconvenienced by this relaxation. In the end, Payne waivered and asked about rescinding the motion. When told it would take a unanimous vote if a motion to rescind was made at the same meeting, he served notice he’d bring the matter up at the next meeting Mar. 24. Councillors also asked for more information on how 11 stalls could be accommodated on or near the site, after spending close to 90 minutes debating the subject.

Sylvan Lake Skippers now open to adults; kids registration full BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS A new skipping club in Sylvan Lake has quickly garnered membership with strong numbers as it prepares to enter its second year. Sylvan Lake Skippers, led by coaches Bruce and Cynthia Morton, met for the club’s first session of the year this week, with kids and adult classes taking place at École Fox Run School yesterday and tomorrow (Friday), respectively. Following a successful inaugural season, Cynthia Morton is again expecting another busy year for the club. “Our very first session in the summer of last year was absolutely amazing,” she said. “We had over 20 kids registered, and this session is going to be our biggest session yet with nearly 30 kids.” While the already fully booked kids session is back by popular demand, the adult session is new, and is aimed at “anyone who wants to lose weight, keep in shape, or even just to have a little bit of fun”, according to Morton. “Our adult club is strictly adults only,” she said. “There are no children allowed.

This way they can get away not only to enjoy something that their kids enjoy, but without the prying eyes of kids.” The activity may also appeal to adults who have trouble finding time to go to the gym, she added. “I understand how hard it is to try and get out,” she said. “(Skipping) is a great form of exercise.” The Mortons began the club last year after they witnessed their own children using improper techniques while skipping outside. Having previously been in a skipping club, Cynthia Morton felt it would be wise to enrol her own children in one, before learning that no such club existed in Sylvan Lake. It was then that she and her husband decided to start their own. Their classes comprise a mixture of both girls and boys, and are often split into two groups: one for experienced skippers, the other for those new to the activity. Skippers then advance through levels, and with progress become more adept at carrying out trickier feats. “We start with the basics, making sure you know how to safely turn the rope without hurting yourself, and making sure

that you understand how to keep your feet and legs in proper posture so you don’t get hurt,” said Morton. “Then later, we go into tricks and crossovers, and of course those are a lot more advanced.” The club only has a few students at that advanced level. Morton hopes there will be more by the end of the next session. Although skipping provides many benefits to a person’s physical health, having fun is Sylvan Lake Skippers’ primary goal. According to Morton, it’s one the club has been able to achieve. “We have an awesome bunch of kids. They are so phenomenal,” she said. “We hand out awards as they come, but we definitely don’t push it. “It’s more about having fun that anything.” While registration for kids classes is now closed, registration for adult classes is ongoing. The latter are also open on a drop-in basis, although, for health and safety reasons, registration in advance is preferred. Both classes will be held once a week for the next seven weeks. For more information, contact Morton at 403-8877808, or visit www.skippingthroughsylvan.com.

‘Talented and experienced’ directors make up new chamber board BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Sylvan Lake Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors is in place for another year, and, comprising members both old and new, is a group President Dwayne Stoesz is looking forward to working with. “Half of our directors are new, and they’ve all got an awful lot of talent and experience to bring to the table,” he said. “There are a lot of new faces on the chamber.” Roles and tasks among members will be divided and assigned according to each member’s individual skill set, interests and experience. Stoesz feels that, with the diversity of expertise, this will ensure that work carried out by the chamber is both effective and efficient. “I’ve got some people already designated for certain portfolios, and we’re not done putting together the entire portfolio, yet,” he said. “We want to make sure we do this right, and we want to make sure that not everybody is overwhelmed.” He added that in the past, good intentions have gone unfulfilled due to hesitance shown in following through on them. “Sometimes things tend to fall flat, or they tend to fall on somebody else’s shoulders. “We’re not going to rush things. If we can find the right people for the right roles, things will get accomplished more efficiently, quicker and with more accuracy.” Stoesz said that the creation of individual portfolios, which is currently underway, is part of a strategic plan to determine a clear direction for the chamber. That’s something he feels has been missing in recent years. “Our mandate is and always has been to promote local shopping and local business, and to build membership, but it’s become more than that,” he said. “In order to accomplish a lot of these goals, we need to take these directors and put them in positions where their talents are most useful.” One of the portfolios will revolve around a new focus for the chamber — tourism. “Tourism is a portfolio that hasn’t been done by the chamber, and it hasn’t been done by the town,” said Stoesz. “It’s something that the town has relied on for so many years, but, ironically, we have no tourism director.” An independent body or a partnership between the chamber and the town are both pos-

nesses. Small business education and continuing to work with the town will be priorities, according to Stoesz. “We’re going to work very, very closely with the town,” he said. “Going way back, there’s been a barrier between the two to communicate, and now, I really truly believe that the chamber and the town have come together, and the members are really starting to see some projects come to fruition. “They’re really starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel.” The chamber’s 2014 board comprises Dwayne Stoesz - president, Joel Johannson - vice president, Josh Welton - treasurer, and directors Greg Weik, Keri Pratt, Debbie Klingbeil, Doreen Carey, Evan Hardy, Joe Furman, Doug McGill, Sharon Toews and Michael Williams. Portfolio designations will be posted on the chamber’s website at www.sylvanlakechamber. com.

Busy year indicated by building statistics for first two months BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

Commercial and residential construction added over $6.7 million to the town’s building statistics in February, the highest monthly total since last August. The pace of construction activity followed a strong January putting the two month total to almost double that of the first two months last year. Commercial permits totalled $2.659 million and included a new two-storey four-bay commercial building on Beju Industrial Drive, immediately south of the Joey’s Only location ($2.079 million), tenant improvements for Royal Lepage Network Realty ($161,520) which is moving to Beju Professional Building, just north of Canadian Tire, Mighty Owls Daycare in the neighbourhood plaza at the corner of Herder and Hinshaw ($343,200), and tenant improvements for Divine Nails & Spa ($76,000) in the mall across from the marina. Two rowhouse projects on Reid Court will create 10 residential units. The total construc-

tion value of the two is pegged at $2,171,520. These units bring the two month total to 38 multi-family residential units under construction, up from just seven units in the first two months of 2012. In addition six single family homes were permitted, at a total value of $1,514,351.36. The construction value of the homes ranged from $154,950 to $337,021. Two of the homes are being built in Ryders Ridge, two in Beacon Hill, one in Crestview and one on 48th Avenue. In the first two months of this year permits were issued for a total of 11 single family homes, the same total as the first two months last year. A permit for renovations at Sylvan Lake Municipal Library ($268,034) was the only one issued in the public facility category. Permits were also issued for five basement developments, two detached garages, one deck and one hot tub. The two month tally for construction permitted in 2014 is $11,058,365.36 compared to $5,760,773.62 in 2012 — an increase of 91.2 per cent.

sibilities for charging that particular initiative, he added. “There are a lot of resources available to us, and there are a lot of resources available to the town, but nobody has taken a stronghold on it. Nobody has gripped it and said let’s run with this. “I don’t know that the chamber’s purview is that tourism falls into that category, but if we can help design or designate an independent body that can take on that role, I think we are going to see some dramatic increases in attraction.” Last year, chamber members were kept busy by the municipal elections, and hosted both election forums and the mayoral debate at the community centre. They also played their part in centennial celebrations, and hosted various other events, including the Mermaid Ball and Business Awards, and a small business Christmas party. This year, fundraising will be carried out through projects including a shop local coupon book, and an area map advertising local busi-

Grass visible beneath melting snow is a welcome sight for Sylvan Lake Blizzard Soccer Club, which held its annual general meeting at École Fox Run School last Tuesday night. With a targeted season start date of early May, the club has been working to appoint directors and recruit volunteers, and confirmed several positions during last week’s meeting. Although others had yet to be confirmed by press time, assistant director Danielle Grapatin was confident of yet another successful season for the club. “Weather depending, we’re aiming to start on the week of May 5,” she said. “Hopefully that pans out. I think we’ll cross that bridge if we come to it,

but from what I can tell, and from what I understand, it seems like it’s going to be another successful year for the soccer club.” Player registration, which opened about a week before the meeting, is ongoing until Mar. 31. It’s not yet clear how many players have signed up, but Grapatin felt the club is on course to match the 540 registrations received last year. Volunteers are needed to help with everything from refereeing to coaching and co-ordinating the club’s various age groups. While some were recruited at the meeting, others are still needed to ensure the smooth operation of the club throughout the year. “Even if all of those positions fill, if someone gets sick or whatever, it’s always nice to have a backup list of people who could step in, as with any volunteer positions,” said Grapatin. “We did actu-

ally have quite a bit of interest in volunteer positions, which was really refreshing.” Players interested in registering are able to decide whether they wish to play in a house league among other teams from Sylvan Lake, or on a travel team that plays against teams from all over Central Alberta. The latter, according to Grapatin, requires more commitment in travelling outside of Sylvan Lake for games and playing on weekends. The club has teams for boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 18, with some of the youngest teams able to play only in house leagues. The season will run until the middle of June. Remaining executive positions will be filled at a future board meeting. A list of all members, once confirmed, will then be posted to the club’s website at www.sylvanlakesoccer.ca.

Sylvan Lake sales in February were well down from February 2013 and also lower than January of this year. It’s hard to define exactly why, but the weather is likely having some impact. The number of active listings is up, contrary to what’s happening in other central Alberta markets, probably thanks to strong builder activity in Sylvan. Most of the price spectrum currently has plenty of choices for buyers except the $450,000 - $500,000 range. Canada Mortgage and Housing raised mortgage insurance premiums by approximately 15% effective May 1st. The increase will add about $5/month to the average borrower’s payments and about $1,200 to the total premium on a $300,000 mortgage. It’s too early to say whether the increase will cause buyers to jump into the market early to avoid the cost.
