Fire service going to referendum in fall BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
After a months-long controversy about a petition to extend fire protection to West Creston residents, the final decision will be determined by referendum this fall. “We will have a referendum during the November local government election,” Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks said on Monday. “This will be at virtually no cost to the taxpayer.” Binks said the effort to extend certified fire protection to West Creston properties arose out of the creation of a community land use bylaw. “It was identified as a real need,” he said. “I started out by talking with the West Creston Fire Protection Society, then having conversations with the Town of Creston about the possibility of contracting the service. “There was no appetite for referendum at the time and we decided to take the petition route. A petition was sent to every property owner.” Animosity grew when Binks extended his own deadline for petitions to be returned by two weeks in January. “This has pitted neighbour against neighbour and we have had people living in fear of arm twisting and intimidation,” he said. “We need to be able to get into the sanctity of a voting booth and state our preference.”

Initiative was directed at Grade 10 students, ensuring that they learn important skills in the last year they are required to take physical education classes. “It’s part of the curriculum,” said PE teacher Bill Ferguson. “But we’ve never been able to do it in the past because we had an outdoor pool.” Previously, students had swimming lessons only in Grade 3 (funded by a
Lifesaving Society grant) and in Grade 5 (funded by parents advisory councils). With earlier lessons at least a few years in the past, some students were wary. “I thought I wouldn’t like it at all,” said Matty Fedorowich. “I’m not the biggest swimmer,” said Jordin Czar. “So I wasn’t sure about it at first.” See SWIMMING, page 5

Bob Gollan has been awesome. He said that the awareness day was a good idea and encouraged us to make it more of a social conversation and involve the community.” ICAT is a relatively new approach that Gollan says is a big step in tackling the problem of violence against women. “It came as a result of a group that we already had that decided to explore the ICAT approach being used in some other B.C. communities,” he said. Regular meetings now include representatives from KCCS, the Creston and District Community Resource Centre, Ministry of Children and Family Development and Lower Kootenay Band social services. Also participating are probation officers, family doctors, Interior Health representatives and the victim services co-ordinator. “It’s a very strong program where we discuss and assess potential serious problems and then develop intervention strategies,” he said. Following a presentation about ICAT, the Conversation About Violence session turned

referendum,” he said. “There will be no taxation for fire service this year. The petition has been dropped.” In a typical regional director election, if a candidate is elected by acclamation, no polling station is set up. Now, however, a polling station will be manned regardless, said Binks. “In the event that no election is needed in Area C, voters will still be able to cast ballots in the referendum and the cost will be about $4,000. That is still cheaper than a stand-alone referendum.”
While Binks says he regrets the controversy that has divided his community, he remains committed to the importance of extending fire service to residents. “I know I would save about $700 a year in insurance, but more important, it’s about safety,” he said. “Fire protection helps prevent physical, emotional and spiritual damage. I still support it. “But we need to heal and move forward, no matter what voters ultimately decide.”

Violence against women discussed at KCCS event BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
About 40 people gathered at the community complex on March 4 for what organizer Dina Bambrick called A Conversation About Violence Against Women. It was just one of several events organized by the Kootenai Community Centre Society after it received funds from the Justice and Children and Family Development ministries. “The day was the result of some very rushed and intensive planning by our staff and board of directors,” said Bambrick. “But I was pleased at the willingness of so many to take part with quite short notice.” From a relevance perspective, the timing couldn’t have been better. This month a survey revealed that on just one day, 242 shelters in Canada helped 4,178 women and 2,490 children. The survey also shows that 116 of the women were pregnant and 184 had been threatened by a gun. When an application for funding was approved, KCCS took a multi-pronged approach to promote awareness. The day included a workshop for the Interagency Case Assessment Team (ICAT) members, a visit from BC Lions centre Angus
Petition
From page 1 A slight majority of property owners signed the petition to initiate certified fire protection, but the slim margin set off a trigger of concern. After consulting with RDCK management, Binks said a concern that the province could reject the petition results because the numbers were so close. “It is clear to me as director for Area C that we need to go to

Eight-week mindfulness course part of training program BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
Less than 100 people in the world are certified mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) teachers, and Creston’s Kuya Minogue is working toward joining their ranks. To that end, she’s offering a free eight-week mindfulness training course, which is the next step toward her goal. The course, which starts March 17, involves eight two-hour classes — plus one daylong retreat — which cover, among other things, sitting and walking meditation, and mindful communication. And in between each class is 45 minutes of daily homework, including guided meditation and mindful yoga. It involves a lot of concepts that Minogue, the resident teacher at the Creston Zen Centre, is familiar with through her study and teaching of Zen and Buddhism. But it also has a significant difference.
“It’s evidence-based,” she said. “It’s not Zen or Buddhist. This is completely secular. It has nothing to do with religion at all. ... It’s not a touchy-feely New Age thing.” MBSR is a behavioural medicine program developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, professor of medicine emeritus and founding director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Research has suggested it improves brain function, blood pressure and some medical conditions, said Minogue. And it has other applications, too; she will offer a mindful eating workshop in April, and, later in the year, an addiction relapse prevention workshop. “There isn’t a lot of didactic teaching,” she said. “It’s about learning practices.” Minogue recently took eight weeks of training along with professionals, including surgeons, psychologists and an advisor to U.S. President Barack Obama, from Europe, South America and Asia, to pre-
pare for the program she is about to teach. The course was a real eye-opener for Minogue, who appreciates being “a member of a community of people who are so extremely well educated in medical and psychology fields and seeing how sincere they are about helping others. ... It’s changed my whole self-concept.” There’s far more to come, though. The upcoming eight-week course is part of a research project, and Minogue will write a report based on her students’ outcomes. After that, she takes 10 days of teacher development training, teaches under Skype supervision from the University of Massachusetts, takes a course in Boston and makes a DVD of her teaching. Only then will the school decide if she’s prepared for certification. “It’s a readiness model,” Minogue said. “They really want qualified teachers because it’s so effective if it’s done right.” For more information, including requirements for admission to the course, contact Minogue at 250-428-6500 or kuya@telus.net, or visit www.kootenaymindfulnesscentre.org.
Swimming
From page 1 But the uncertainty quickly vanished. “Once we actually started going, it was fun to get out of class and go swimming,” said Tess Poznikoff. Classes covered three components: stroke development/endurance, lifesaving skill and local learning. The latter section dealt with practical applications of skills in and around lakes, canyons, bridges, boats and ice. For Poznikoff, the most memorable exercise was one that demonstrated the dangers of alcohol impairment — being spun around while blindfolded, then having to get oriented in the water Brian Lawrence while still dizzy. Swimming students practice their lifesaving skills. “You couldn’t see, so you didn’t “They’re definitely stronger,” said know when you were going to hit the “Not only does it bring more people Cherfils. “Would they be able to get to the complex, it gets in a new demowater,” she said. It seemed more than a little ironic that only a week after being royally peeved about an incident described in our letters to the editor I was sitting in a presentation called Be More Than a Bystander. Capping a day of meetings and presentations aimed at reducing violence toward women, BC Lions’ centre Angus Reid (who announced his retirement a few days later) was standing before an audience of several dozen, talking about a program he and teammates deliver. It targets high school students, encouraging young males not to tolerate inappropriate behavior or attitudes toward females. Be More Than a Bystander. The letter to the editor, written by our office manager here at the Advance, described two incidents in which her elderly mother could have used someone who was willing to be more than a bystander. In the first, a driver apparently went out of his way to swerve over and drive through water as Mom walked along the sidewalk. She stood, drenched, as the vehicle drove merrily on its way. Only days later, again out on a sidewalk, Mom was knocked over by an loosely leashed dog whose owner called out that the animal “just wants to make friends.” He stood chatting with another pedestrian while Mom, who landed on her face, struggled to her feet. Makes you think that a little baseball bat justice might be in order, doesn’t it? In another meeting organized before the Be More Than a
During the day of his visit, Reid spoke to a group of high school students. Having heard him speak and watched a video about the Be More Than a Bystander program, I have no doubt that male students walked away thinking about ways in which they might approach other males who are behaving badly toward females. And I hope that the message sticks. After Reid spoke on Tuesday evening, I talked to Lorne Eckersley him briefly, sharing my thoughts about how the program might work to bring in sports in an attempt to head off serious teams, recruiting young athletes to domestic abuse cases before they become part of the Be More Than a spin out of control. This is the Life
Taking refuge in the dharma
Buddha realized enlightenment when he was 40 years old and spent the next 40 years teaching what he had learned. His teachings have been compiled into a vast number of Buddhist scriptures, or sutras, that are directions for practice. They teach us to realize enlightenment for ourselves. Taking refuge in the dharma is more than just believing in these sutras; it is practicing what the texts are teaching. On his deathbed, Buddha said, “Don’t believe a word I have said; do these practices and find out for yourselves.” When we take refuge in the dharma, we acknowledge the wisdom and compassion in these teachings, and through meditation and training, express them in our daily lives. But taking refuge in the dharma is bigger than studying and practicing what the Buddha taught. As we progress in Zen training, we find that everything in our life is dharma since we are in a constant process of learning and discovery. We do not regard some things as secular and some things as sacred, but see everything as truth, which is one translation of the word “dharma”. We don’t get emotional about the dharma so we avoid grasping or trying to possess
any aspect of it. This results in nonaggression. Usually, the basic thread that runs through our experience is our desire to make and meet goals.
A
Zen's-Eye View Kuya Minogue
Ideally, everything we do should relate to these goals. This tendency drives us to become greater farmers, greater carpenters, greater poets. When we take refuge in the dharma, we cut through this goaloriented vision, so that everything becomes a learning process. We relate fully with everything in our lives. So, taking refuge in the dharma develops the sense that it is worthwhile to walk on this Earth. We see nothing as a waste of time; we see nothing as a punishment or as a cause of complaint. We appreciate everything. This aspect of taking refuge is particularly applicable in western society, where we judge many elements in our relationships or surroundings
as unhealthy. But once we do that we divide the world and everything in it into two categories: sacred and profane, or good and evil. Taking refuge in the dharma means seeing that all of life is a learning situation. Whatever occurs — pain or pleasure, good or bad, justice or injustice — is part of our learning process. There is nothing to blame. Everything is the path. Everything is dharma. When we take refuge in the dharma we face life directly and personally. We do not try to explain our problems away by blaming them on something or someone outside ourselves. We experience life as it is. Pain is pain, pleasure is pleasure, and confusion is confusion. It’s all dharma, and we take refuge in it all. Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, each time something difficult enters your path, notice how you react. Do you feel hard done by? Do you look for something or someone outside yourself to blame? Kuya Minogue is resident teacher at the Creston Zen Centre and will be offering classes on the 16 precepts of Soto Zen Buddhism at 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings through April 17. Owner’s silence a test of integrity To the Editor: I have never been more proud and disappointed in my community than I have been in the past month. Four generations of my family have called Creston home, I was born and raised here, with the exception of the time while I was away at university, and I too am raising my family here. I love this valley and community, I own a business in this valley that employs 10 people, and I volunteer with non-profit organizations, yet with one controversial matter some members of my beloved community were quick to condemn me, my business (which is not involved in the Osprey Medical Clinic) and my choice in a business partner. I will not comment on matters between my business partner and the other party in the dispute because I have no involvement, responsibility or ownership in the matter; however, I will say that truth amidst a dispute always lies in the middle, and all parties involved have ownership in the escalation of the dispute. I was appalled at the behaviour that occurred on a certain Creston Facebook group. I understand that peoples’ relationships with their doctors are intimate, important and emotional, as I worked at a medical clinic for numerous years before becoming an accountant, and I too have had serious medical issues. However, that does not excuse the behavior that I have read or witnessed on this site. Both of our professions are built on the utmost of confidences. We as accountants would never think of discussing financial matters, business deals and/or disputes, or any other matter of our clients, as that violates a code of conduct and ethics. The biggest complaint by the community is that they have not heard the owners’ side or been provided details by the owners. I view this as the greatest test of my business partner’s integrity as a man and a professional to remain silent while being lambasted through media reports and other public outlets. The high road is never the easy road and some are not taking it. A protest rally occurred on Feb. 28 outside my office as a way of blocking my clients from entering my business, as an attempt to run us out of business and out of town (as indicated on the abovementioned Facebook page) and as a public spectacle for aspiring politicians. Once again, my firm is not and never has been an owner of the Osprey Medical Clinic. I am unclear as to how “running” another business out of Creston, thus causing unemployment of numerous people, would benefit our community or provide support for your chosen side of the dispute. You do not see me, my family or our supporters (yes, we too have supporters) staging a protest in front of other local businesses that are unrelated to the dispute but happen to be owned by common/related persons, as protest of the way we have been treated. So why is it OK for this rally to have occurred? Physicians have every right and opportunity to open their own practice, manage their own staff and pay their own bills, just like the numerous other physicians and businesses in our beautiful community. No one can or is stopping the physicians from doing so. With all this being said, many in the community have voiced and shown their support for me, my business and my business partner during this ordeal and I would like to publicly thank

them for understanding that there are two sides, trusting the people they know us to be and for remaining truly community minded. You are appreciated and held in my highest regard. Erin Carr Creston
Health more important than wealth
To the Editor: When I needed blood pressure medication and found out that our Dr. Elemuo, and Dr. Guthrie and Dr. Hopkins, were kicked out or locked out of their practice, it came like a shock. When I heard that the owner breached the contract and that this owner is a chartered accountant, it seemed hard to believe. But later the doctors confirmed that it was so. I have absolutely no reason to believe that our Doctor Elemuo is not telling the truth. I thought that accountants, and especially chartered accountants, in a lovely town like Creston would be the last to break contracts. We are certainly glad that the doctors now have a temporary place to practice thanks to the doctors at the Family Practice Associates Clinic. Thank you, doctors at the Family Practice. You show that the real spirit of Creston is alive and well. I hope the three doctors will find a permanent place and will spend many, many happy and healthy years in our beautiful valley and will go on providing health care and support for us. Narrow-minded business people, including chartered accountants, who don’t care about the well-being of their fellow residents simply don’t deserve to live in a good community like Creston. Many good people work very hard to create better communities and a better world, and family physicians who often go way beyond their call of duty are a very important part of this. Health and happiness is far more important than material wealth. Henry Dahle Creston
Changing time wouldn’t be practical To the Editor: Just a few observations and concerns regarding time change: If I had the opportunity to vote for time change, my choice would be no. First of all, to change, it would make the practical side of it even more difficult and complex than it is now with no change. Valley residents have interests and connections pretty much both ways, east and west, from Creston, in two different time zones. We are in one of those locations where it is convenient to be up early or to get to work later, go to school in the dark in the morning or come home from school in the dark. If mountain time were chosen, just as many people would be unhappy as would be if Pacific time were chosen. Then the issue would likely rise every year henceforth, resulting in more confusion, with more public energy and money spent. For over 40 years as a resident in Arrow Creek I have seen this issue come up time after time. It seems to start publicly with an appearance of a letter to the editor or something similar. It also seems it comes from someone “new” to the val-
ley, who doesn’t appear to understand, not having lived here very long, the real issues of the community related to being basically halfway between larger centers in different time zones. Other communities in like locations seem to stick with no change. There must be a simplicity they find in that choice. I recall some 30 years ago there was talk of time change and sabres were rattling here and there around the Creston Valley. It was like this in the newspaper and in the talk: Monday morning the stores will open and be on such and such a time! Come Monday morning I was in town, and, lo, things weren’t like I expected them to be. The stores opened the way they had always opened for hundreds of years. What a pleasant relief! On checking what happened or didn’t happen, I was told the businesses wouldn’t go with it. Smart move! I can understand that some businesses and school staff require prep time to get ready for the day. On Creston time, kids may meet the bus in the dark. But as a former parent and schoolteacher, I can say that is better and safer than going home in the dark! That works for a lot of other situations too. I hear a lot of people saying, “Keep it as it is! It is more practical that way,” “Don’t people have enough to do to keep them busy and out of mischief without trying to change the time,” and “People’s lives here are built around the way it is in this interesting time zone location we have.” Ed McMackin Arrow Creek
ALR protects irreplaceable farmland
To the Editor: (Open letter to B.C. Premier Christy Clark) As a small business owner based on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, I am writing to you to express my concerns about the future of the Agricultural Land Reserve in British Columbia. I grew up in Richmond during the ’70s and saw how priceless delta farmland and market gardens were paved over to become condominiums and malls — removed forever from food production. Later on, through the ’90s, I lived outside of Calgary, Alta. There I witnessed formerly viable farmers and ranchers being forced to subdivide to cover the drastic increase of their property taxation due to the rampant property development around them. This was not a prudent management of our limited agricultural resources, and does not contribute to long-term local food security. I am currently working to become a sustainable small farm in the Kootenays through diversified farming and animal management. I believe the existing ALR is a critical protection of our irreplaceable farmland. Madame premier, I appeal to your sense of leadership. Show us that you have the long-range vision to maintain our agricultural resources. Please do not alter the ALR currently in place — our productive farmland must be protected for the present-day and future residents of B.C. Please do not give in to the temptation of short-term monetary gain today at the cost of long-term resource sustainability. Food security is now a dire issue for everyone on this fragile planet — this is your chance to be the shining light. I thank you most sincerely for your consideration of my request and your time. ‘Leap of faith’leads to naturopathic medicine
W
ith her pre-med studies completed, Dr. Kim Masuch was set to continue on the path to becoming a medical doctor. But when she went to the University of Victoria to apply, she stumbled across someStory and thing new. photo by “Funnily enough, I hadn’t even heard of Brian naturopathic medicine Lawrence at that point,” she said. But that brief introduction was enough to change her plans, and with two weeks until the deadline, she decided to become a naturopathic doctor, although because it wasn’t mainstream, she was “terrifically scared.” “It was a leap of faith,” said Masuch, a naturopathic physician who started a Creston practice at 11th Avenue North’s Golden Herb Health Foods in January. The discovery of naturopathy, she said, “was like excitement mixed with relief.” As a youth, she had struggles with health, and visits to the doctor amounted to very little help. She’d wanted to be a doctor since she was a child, and those health issues encouraged her to pursue medicine, but she wanted to do something to change it. When she discovered naturopathy, she realized, “There’s actually someone out there already doing this.” A naturopathic doctor (ND) goes through the same first two years of university as an MD, studying diagnosis and treatment, and learning how the body works on a biochemical level. From there, though, the practices branch off. “What’s different is how we treat and we look at the body,” Masuch said. “We look at every single symptom the body has ever had.” Naturopathy is a holistic practice, comprised of many treatment types, including nutritional and herbal medicine, counselling and homeopathy, utilized in the context of conventional medicine. While NDs range in treatment styles, Masuch — who is basically a general practitioner with a passion for pediatrics, pregnancy and fertility — said she falls somewhere in the middle. “I like to use lab diagnoses and blood tests to find out what to work on,” she said. Unlike some naturopaths, she is licensed to prescribe pharmaceuticals — sometimes

patients require medicine right away, such as in the case of antibiotics, rather than taking the time for a different treatment. For patients who don’t require emergency medicine, the initial consultation can be about an hour, preceded by a form that takes about 15 minutes to fill out at home. Masuch will ask each patient about things such as their health growing up, stress levels, lifestyle and sleep patterns. As with any doctor, openness is key to developing the right course of treatment. “If I don’t know everything, I can’t put together the right treatment plan,” she said. “It hinders our ability to move forward.” Usually, she’ll look at a patient’s diet first; with ailments from digestive compli-
cations to skin disorders to headaches, dietary changes are often needed. A good start, she said, is reducing simple sugars in the diet, which isn’t as much of a problem here in the Creston Valley as she found in the Lower Mainland — many in the city rely on refined and processed food, but here there is much more home cooking. And Masuch should know. Her grandparents and relatives live in the valley, and her family visited Creston every summer when she was growing up. From Victoria, she attended school in New Westminster for the second portion of her ND training, and later had practices in White Rock and Langley. But it didn’t make sense to stay there.
“In White Rock, there were more NDs than Starbucks, and there was a Starbucks on every corner,” she said. “It was too concentrated.” In Creston, she’s the only ND who is permanently based here; many patients who visit a naturopath go to Nelson, while others travel as far as Coeur d’Alene, Spokane or even Calgary. That, she hopes, will allow her to better work with local doctors in treating patients. “The only thing in my mind is the patients’ best care and best interests,” she said. “Part of what I really enjoy is how excited people get when they realize they can feel better. A lot of the time, they don’t know they can.”

The news is impacTful. The paper iT’s prinTed on isn’T. We in the newspaper industry are committed to reducing our impact on the environment. For example, our newsprint suppliers plant more trees than they take and have successfully reduced gas emissions by 10 times what is required under Kyoto. And you’ve helped, too, by recycling over 80% of all newsprint in Canada. There is more to do, and together, we can work toward sustainability. Because sustainability isn’t just another story to us. It’s how we’re shaping our future.

Veggie popularity growing TAC keeps teens busy
Running any sort of retail business should make you interested in the latest trends, if only out of simple curiosity. The Garden Writers Association (of which I am no part) has a series of surveys performed throughout the year to look at developing trends.
maintenance also takes a certain amount of time every week through the growing season. Fruits and vegetables came in second place, a developing trend, with perennials in third place and trees and shrubs fourth. Lastly come annual flowers. Nursery Notes
Kale takes about seven to 10 days to germinate. Like broccoli and other cole crops, including cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collard and kohlrabi, cool (10-15 degrees Celsius) and moist conditions let them grow well. We have the seed for dinosaur kale (lacinato) and dwarf blue curled kale. Perusing the seed rack for other new and unusual varieties, I noted the rainbow blend of carrot seed — sweet crunchy carrots in a variety of colours like red, purple, yellow and white. It reminds me of the multicoloured Swiss chard. There is also an Oriental blend of greens. Four kinds are in the mix including mitsuba, tsoisim, garland round leaf and komatsuna. For many of these hardy plants, you could probably let them go to seed in your own garden and then save it for the following season. If this idea appeals to you take a close look at the Organic Seed Rack. These open-pollinated and often heirloom varieties have been grown this way for generations. Hope you have an enjoyable early March! Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.
Teen Action Committee (TAC) — maybe some of you have heard about it; probably most of you haven’t. The Teen Action Committee is a very fundamental youth group. It teaches teens what it’s like to have responsibilities and also gives teens a chance to give something back to our hometown of Creston, such as this column.
I have developed new friends and many new valuable opportunities. I think that every teen that would like a worthwhile experience in their youth should join the TAC. The TAC has done a lot for me and it could do a lot for any other teen. Our teen advocate, Ashley Allin, is a fun, amazing and conscientious person who understands us teens unlike any other adult. She is not only our teen advocate, but also our friend. I really enjoy the TAC and all it’s done for me. Four teens from the TAC will be writing for this column, including me; LoRae Blackmore, Bram Luscher Elizabeth Nygren and Hailey Viers will also be writing and contributing to the articles you will see The TAC also puts on events for in the Creston Valley Advance. Drives-U-Crazy Hanging Left on a Red Teaching people the unusual rules of the road would make driving a little less frustrating in busy centres. For instance, everybody knows that it is legal to make a right turn on a red light. However, it seems few people realize it is fine to hang a left on red from a two-way street into a one-way street. If there are no vehicles approaching from your right on the green it’s perfectly safe and efficient and reduces lengthy backups. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substantially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada. Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1. It comes with a 228hp 2.0-litre turbocharged gas engine capable of hitting 100 km/h in less than six seconds. I will reveal it will sell for more than $40,000 in the UK. It’s fast, it’s a premium offering and I’ll eat my hat if it shows up here. All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here. And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle. And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Safety Tip: Spring break is a popular time of the year for a getaway. If you’re planning a long drive across the province, remember that winter tires could still be needed on certain highways. It’s also an ideal time to get a qualified mechanic to check your vehicle’s suspension and steering.

Four Sport Utes worth a long look The Diminuitave Fiat 500 Goes Big With the Vancouver International Auto Show just around the corner, I thought I would share my list of exciting new SUVs that are available. Tough to nail down just one but I am sure one of these would spark some interest.
2014 Ford Explorer Sport is a performance version of its popular SUV. The headlights and taillights have been blacked out to give it a sporty appearance. 20-inch painted and machined wheels allow room for the larger brakes that help it stop faster and improve performance when towing. The engine is an impressive 3.5 litre, twin turbocharged EcoBoost V6, producing a whopping 365 horsepower and 350 pound feet of torque with a 6 speed automatic transmission. To say this is quick off the line is an understatement. The Explorer also features a terrain management system that lets you select between sand, snow, mud, or hill descent. $46,999 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit equipped with a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine putting out 240 hp and 420 lb ft of torque with an 8 speed transmission delivers excellent millage while provide exceptional comfort. Natura-Plus leather faced seating, wood trim with copper accents, and a 19 speaker, 825 watt Harmon/ Kardon audio system keep you relaxed and alert. Up to date safety features such as enhanced accident response system, blind spot monitoring system, back up camera, engine immobilizer, hill start assist, and all speed traction control are just some of the many features this vehicle has to offer to keep you safe. Excellent value. Starting at $60,895 2014 Jeep Cherokee is a completely redesigned five passenger SUV that has a front end that will stand out from the crowd. A seven-slotted grille and razor thin headlights makes the Jeep truly unique. The engine is a 2.4L Tigershark Multiair straight 4 cylinder delivering 184 hp and 171 lb ft of torque mated to a 9 speed automatic transmission. It can tow up to 2000lbs. The trail rated Trailhawk version has an active drive lock 4x4 system with 4 low gear and a rear-locking differential. It also features a neutral mode for flat towing behind an RV. Sport 4x4 $25,895 TrailHawk $30,895
The Fiat 500 is cute but might not be the most practical choice as a family vehicle. Sure, it has room for four, a peppy personality (even with its base 101 horsepower engine,) but accessing the rear seats isn’t the easiest and the cargo room is minimal. The engine is a 510 horsepower, supercharged 5.0 litre V8 that puts out 461 lb-ft of torque @2500 RPM with a 6 speed automatic transmission. This transmission features Command Shift that actively responds to your driving habits and road conditions by reconfiguring the shift patterns for optimum drivability in all situations and is mated with a 2 speed electronically controlled transfer case. Four wheel electronic traction control, hill descent control, and four corner air suspension with terrain response not only makes this vehicle maneuver well on the road but can take you on some of the roughest back roads British Columbia has to offer. $125,575

Confessions of a Curber I was itching to sell another car. I‘d spent my first cash quickly. The new TV looked great in my living room. So I scrounged the dealer lots in my neighbourhood. I found the perfect car at a small dealership not far from my house. Gray with four doors. Everything was still intact, but it was priced low. The dealer gave me the car’s history right away. It had been in three accidents over its lifetime. Nothing too major, but damage was done and repaired. I couldn’t spot the repairs. So, I happily bought it and registered it. I didn’t want my wife and kids to know what I was up to, so I parked it around the block. I knew it would be gone in a few days. This time, I used Kijiji and Craigslist. “Car for sale. Served me well, but wife wants a new car. Accident and damage free. Looking to sell fast, low price. Cash only. Call cell for info.” I got a text message from a woman across town. I told her I’d meet her at a nearby gas station and would throw in a free tank of gas. She was thrilled. When I met her, she told me that she needed a cheap, dependable vehicle to get to her new job. She’dd been taking the bus for weeks and was tired of her commute. To my annoyance, she wanted to check the vehicle thoroughly. So I distracted her. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I
wanted to keep my wife happy. She nodded sympathetically. As she handed me the money, she asked if the vehicle was in any accidents. Now, I’m not a good liar. So I simply said, No. It’s her fault for not asking for a CarProof or ICBC vehicle history report. That seemed to do it. She was pleased and drove away with a smile on her face. As for me, I went home with a fat wallet. A few days later, I got a text: “Got CarProof report. Three accidents?!?!? Need money back now!!!” I panicked. But not for long. I was getting good at this. I just got a new cell number. She didn’t know my name – that old fake ID worked great. And she had no idea where I lived. Finding me would wear her out. I was in the clear. But will I be so lucky next time? *Curber – An individual posing as a private seller, but selling vehicles for profit as a business. It loses a little bit of its pinch-the-cheeks cuteness but its practicality makes up for it. In the driver’s seat, you have an almost unadulterated outward visibility. The 500L features a segment-exclusive glass from the A- to D-pillars that provide nearly 360-degree panoramic views. Parking is easy because you can pretty much see out of all four corners. And the 500L – even with its “large” designation – still fits comfortably into urban settings. Driving the 500L, I noticed it doesn’t have quite the same amount of panache as the 500 Turbo. Granted, it’s a heavier vehicle. But to still keep some of the driving fun behind the wheel, Fiat has outfitted it with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine that provides 160 horsepower, 184 lb-ft. of torque. In corners, the 500L doesn’t have as tight of a setup as the 500, so don’t push it too hard since body roll is more evident. Perhaps what really stands about this compact car is just how much people room there is inside. I never felt cramped nor did my passengers. Not to mention the 633L (22.4 cubic feet) of storage behind the second row seats.

Tracking tracks and trails in winter
tracks. Coyotes find hunting more successful where there is shallower snow cover. It is easier to maneuver in and, also, small mammals like mice are more visible. For us, determining in deep snow what creature made the track is more difficult because the snow often falls into the track covering the print. But then, the creature that made the track can be identified by other means like the gait, length of step, size of print, habit and so on. I find it interesting to follow One of the best times in win- a set of animal tracks. OpiniOn Line the tree trunk. Thus, the ground under the tree seldom gets much snow, leaving ground vegetation exposed for grouse to forage and for winter shelter. In the alpine it also leaves a pit, a tree well, for a skier to fall into. It is possible to find trails of voles, shrews and jumping mice in the snow. Sometimes the snowfall can be so light that it doesn’t support even the weight of a shrew. So the evidence that “somebody” passed that way is a little snow trench bulldozed through the snow. Zapus princeps (western jumping mouse) doesn’t have to plow through the snow. The snow challenge is met by just jumping along over it. In a snowy coniferous forest you might find yourself on the trail of one of these. These small mammals, for the most part, travel next to the ground under the protective snow cover by way of a network of tunnels pushed through the snow. Recently, someone was scraping away the snow from below a bird feeder when they exposed a vole dining on seeds fallen from the feeder. Tracks of large animals may be more numerous around where there is water or plenty of some favourite food. Winter forage is often great for moose and elk where there are lots of deciduous shrubs like willow, aspen and red-osier dogwood. Moose will come down in winter and wander from shrub to shrub or from one shrubby thicket to another. I have often wondered how they, wandering about, can make so many tracks but they are at it all the time, when they are not sleeping or resting, slowly moving along and feeding here and there. They also have two pairs of feet, not one pair. Their large hooves make the largest footprint you will likely find in the wild, except

those of a packhorse. You may find a large smooth hollow in the snow where they bedded down or you may see their large oval droppings. Even though moose will often seek secluded lower places with shallow snow cover they are very capable of nonchalantly wandering around in winter at higher elevations through four feet of snow. I have seen some pretty distinct animal footprints and wished that I had some plaster of paris along with a little water to mix and pour into a footprint, making a reverse print. At home I would make a casting of the reverse print and have an

actual life-sized copy of, say, a wolf, cougar or moose footprint. I would paint it the color of the mud and tell you I got a cougar to step in this and leave a track. (I needed to tell you something you would believe.) This is a little bit of fun that can be a learning experience. Try it next summer when it’s hopefully warm enough for the plaster of paris or drywall filler to set. Then you can introduce people, who are unable to get out there, to a footprint of a coyote or other creature. Ed McMackin is a biologist by profession but a naturalist and hiker by nature. Library’s living book revealing gypsy soul CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY
The Creston Valley Public Library is pleased to present Wendi Roth with “Gypsy Soul” as its March living book. Roth came to her romance with the wandering life naturally. As the middle child in a group of seven and the only one not a twin, she spent her childhood moving from one place to another as her carpenter father’s work dictated.

BNN donates to Boswell harbour BOSWELL NIFTY NEEDLERS
The Boswell Nifty Needlers (BNN) is a group of dedicated quilters who wanted to help raise funds for the Help the Harbour campaign. The Boswell boat launch is one of very few launch sites on the East
Shore and it is a well-used facility. Unfortunately, it is becoming unsafe and needs to be rebuilt. The cost is very high and the Boswell community is busy raising funds to supplement any grants we may receive. An idea was put forward and the result was a 2014 wall calendar featuring not only

Cranbrook drummer offering workshop SUBMITTED
Local drummers will have a chance to improve their skills when Cranbrook’s Keon Chung visits the Snoring Saqsuatch to present a daylong workshop on March 22. The workshop is open to drummers of all levels, from beginner to professional, and will cover basic rudiments, posture and stick grip, beat styles, adding variations, creating drum fills, jamming with a band, practicing versus rehearsal, and soloing alone or against a track. Attendees bring their own drum set-ups at 9 a.m. and set up. The workshop runs from 11
a.m.-3 p.m., with a short break in the middle (bring lunch/snack). All participants will get their snares tuned up and a single draw will take place for a complete kit tune-up to the winner. Chung has over 20 years of professional playing experience with fellow drummers such as Randy Cooke and Jeff Salem. A tour in Western Canada brought him to Cranbrook in 2000, where he continues his craft of teaching over 200 students since 2002 and gigging on a regular basis. Registration is $60, available online only until March 21; visit www.snoringsasquatch.com to find this event and the registration link.

Following the Deep Water Martial Arts Convention and Tournament, which runs in Creston March 21-23, all are invited to Tea with the Masters at 7:30 p.m. March 22 at the Snoring Sasquatch. Tea with the Masters is a rare and unique opportunity to have an open question-andanswer discussion with a panel of masters of martial arts, qigong and traditional Chinese medicine. This is not a “martial artists only” event. If you practice or are interested in any of these subjects this is a chance to directly ask questions of experts with decades of experience. The keynote speaker and guest of honor is George Xu, who started martial arts training in 1966 with Zhu Hong Bao, in the three Muslim styles in China. After a range of studies with other masters, he came to the United States in 1981 and began a long career of teaching and bringing Chinese masters not only to the U.S., but also exposing the art of high level practitioners to Kung Fu enthusiasts worldwide. Also attending will be Kevin Wallbridge, a professor of Chinese medicine at Nelson’s Academy of Classical Oriental Sciences, and a well known teacher of Chinese martial arts internal styles and qigong. He has been training since 1985 and has lived and trained at Ermei Mountain in China’s Szechuan province.
Sifu Neil Ripski has been training in Chinese martial arts for nearly 30 years and is a teacher of external and internal styles including qigong, tai chi, bagua, xinyi, northern Shaolin and what he is best known for, drunken boxing. He is the author of three books on martial arts and runs the world’s only full time drunken Kung Fu training program. He is the owner of Red Jade Martial Arts and co-founder of the Deep Water Magazine and convention. Jason Deatherage is moderator and will be fielding questions to teachers, as well as available for answers himself. He has been involved in Martial Arts and Martial Philosophy since he was born. Growing up with a Tibetan lama (Geshe Tashi Namgyal) in his home, Deatherage has a deep understanding of Buddhist and Taoist philosophies. He currently holds a black sash rank in the northern Shaolin system taught at Red Jade Martial Arts under sifu Neil Ripski and is one of the current standard bearers and lineage holders of the rare Piercing Cloud style of Chinese swordsmanship. Sensei Tom Gillis has been practicing martial arts for 20 years. He has successfully completed nearly 60 instructor programs in the area of law enforcement training and currently holds a thirddegree black belt in bujinkan budo taijutsu awarded by grand master Masaaki Hatsumi. He owns and operates FTS Inc. out of Okotoks, Alta., and loves sharing his passion for martial arts with others. Gillis has also been endorsed for his godan test in bujinkan martial arts. Sensei Lloyd Willette lives in Spokane, Wash., and has been a student of the martial arts for over 30 years. He began his training in silum pai hung gar kung fu and trained in the art until he was 12. He cross-trained in koga ryu ninjutsu for four years and began training in Tang Soo Do at 14. He is always open to comparing thoughts and notes, and enjoys the martial spirit of fellow martial artists who share an open desire to learn rather than prove themselves. Admission is $10 at the door, which opens at 7:30 p.m., and included with an all-weekend wristband. Refreshments will be provided by: Nelson’s Cloud Mountain Tea House. Black Bear Books for the smiles and great coffee. Gail Brookfield for the best dishcloth ever. Yvonne Horne for being the best person ever to be working by my side. Cheyenne for helping me with papers. Creston Fire Dept. for their prompt response to our recent CO2 alarm. Great job! Micheline Ryckman at Erickson Covenant Church for coercing us hesitant ones into getting our pictures taken for the directory. So glad we did, what an awesome job! The gents on the 2400 block of Birch Street for taking care of all of us with snow removal duties. You are awesome! The young lady at Pro-to-Call for going out of her way to give extra special service. Mr. C for “Ginger” with you at staff parties. The Redeemer Lutheran Church ladies for the gift of their blessings. Shorty for being the best neighbour ever. Community Complex staff for their participation in the Mystery of the Missing Notebook. YRB for de-icing our parking lot. Bill for sanding the lot. Lloyd Shopa for plowing the snow in the parking lot. Everyone for making the Be More Than a Bystander event such a success.

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.
Well, lookie here. One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s definitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.
Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.
What’s going on here?
Email Christy Clark at premier@gov.bc.ca or call 250-387-1715. For more info, visit RethinkItBC.ca. #RethinkItBC. This Message is brought to you by:

THE CHAMPIONS — For the first time since 2000, the Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s Atom C Bruins closed out a successful hockey season on March 2 by winning the East Kootenay Minor Hockey Association’s championships. The Bruins won every game in the event, facing off against Kimberley in the final. Although both teams dug in hard, Creston edged Kimberley 5-4. Thunder Cats lose two of three against Dynamiters

After shutting the Columbia Valley Rockies out of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs in four games, things are a bit slower for the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, who, as of Tuesday, were down 2-1 in the second round. The Thunder Cats won the series’ first game against the Kimberley Dynamiters on Friday, but the Dynamiters won in Creston on Saturday, and again on Monday. (Results of Tuesday’s game were unavailable at press time.) “Kimberley’s always been a tough opponent,” said Thunder Cats head coach Josh Hepditch. “They’ve got a hardworking team that just doesn’t quit.” Friday’s 4-1 victory, played in Creston, went well, said Hepditch. “We came out with a fast start and got to the heart of it,” he said. Matti Jmaeff and Carson Cartwright each scored in the first period, with Brandon Formosa and Seth Schmidt capitalizing on power plays to each score in the second period. “That was really the key in game one,” said Hepditch. “That was definitely the start we were looking for in the series.” The Dynamiters scored their only goal on a power play in the third period. The contributions of goaltender Brock Lefebvre and forward Logan Styler significantly

helped the Creston team toward the win. “[Styler] was one of our energy guys,” said Hepditch. “He created lots of chances.” Things didn’t go as well on Saturday, when the Thunder Cats suffered a 4-2 loss. A powerplay goal by Formosa was the only goal in the first period, but the Thunder Cats’ lack of discipline allowed three Dynamiters goals in the second period.
“In our second period, we kind of came off track a little bit and took some penalties,” said Hepditch. “They capitalized on those. We dug a hole too deep to get out of in the third period.” Jmaeff scored a single thirdperiod goal for Creston, with Kimberley finishing the night with a shorthanded empty-netter at 0:55. Thunder Cats
From page 27 Things could have been much worse if not for the line of Marcel Fuchs, Connor Ward and Marshall Sidwell, who helped kill several penalties. “They followed that right in to game
three,” said Hepditch. “They’ve been good all series.” Monday’s game in Kimberley wasn’t much better, with the Dynamiters scoring on a power play early in the first period, with a second goal later. Kimberley scored once in the second period, but Tyler Podgorenko scored one for the Thunder Cats early in the third.

The Dynamiters scored the final goal, again shorthanded on an empty net in the last minute. “Their goalie just stood on his head,” said Hepditch. “We just couldn’t find a way to score, which is uncharacteristic of us, but it happens.” He hoped to even the series up with a Tuesday win, which, after a game in
Creston tonight, would see the teams return to Kimberley tomorrow. (If needed, a seventh game will be played in Creston on Saturday.) “It’s definitely going to need some effort, for sure,” said Hepditch. “A lot of people felt us to be the giant, but we knew it was going be a long series because of the way they work.”
