British Columbia residents will be able to buy B.C. wine from grocery stores by early next year, with some stores connected to liquor stores that offer full selection including hard liquor. The B.C. Liberal government released its framework for a major overhaul of liquor policy Feb. 6. It proposes a small number of new licences for Vintners’ Quality Alliance (VQA) wine sales from grocery store shelves, with future expansion to include B.C.-made craft beer under the same licences.

In the Red Caboose, Save-On-Food’s Parking Lot

Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap said all alcohol sales will be rung through at separate cash registers, with staff trained in an expanded “Serving It Right” course to check identification and sobriety. Customers will be able to stock up on groceries and alcoholic beverages in the same shopping cart, whether from in-store B.C. wine or products from a connected liquor store. Changes to take effect by this summer include licensing B.C. wine and beer sale and tasting at farmers’ markets, permitting “happy hour” drink discounts at licensed businesses and remov-

ing the requirement for fenced beer gardens at approved outdoor festivals. Yap said the government is adopting a recommendation from Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall and other health officials to tie prices to alcohol content, in an effort to reduce over-consumption. The government plans to maintain its cap on the number of liquor stores, with 670 private stores now in operation. Liquor stores are currently restricted to relocating no more than five kilometres from their original location, but that restriction is

being lifted so a licence can be sold or moved anywhere in the province. Yap said it would allow either a government or private liquor store to relocate next to a grocery store. Another major change in the works is to wholesale pricing from the government’s monopoly Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB). Currently, private stores pay a 16 per cent discount off the government store retail price. Yap said the LDB will move to the same wholesale price for all stores, based on the value of each product, and retail prices will be set by a competitive market.

B.C. still attractive to miners: Bennett

By Tom Fletcher Black Press

Industry representatives from around the world are disappointed in the latest rejected mine in British Columbia. However, they are not taking their frustration out on the B.C. Liberal government, said Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett. He was in Toronto

at the Prospectors and Development Association convention recently, pitching B.C.’s efforts to make the province more attractive to mining investment. He added delegates were disappointed to hear that Taseko Mines’ proposal to develop a copper-gold deposit near Williams Lake. “People don’t associate that decision with

the B.C. government, they associate it with the federal government, and I think people here are more optimistic than I expected.” With 30,000 delegates, the convention is the largest industry gathering in the world. Bennett promoted the construction of the Northwest Transmission Line, bringing electricity to the remote region north

of Terrace. It is scheduled to be completed this summer, the line will enable operation of the Red Chris copper-gold mine near Iskut. Of the 20 major mine proposals currently in the B.C. environmental assessment process, five are in the northwest. Bennett said one of the main difficulties for junior mining companies is attracting

financing for projects that take many years to develop. The annual Fraser Institute global survey of mining companies was released at the convention. Alberta was viewed as the most attractive

The British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF), under contract to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, advises that commencing in December lake aerators will be in operation on: • Irish Lake • Skulow Lake • Simon Lake The purpose of the lake aeration program is to minimize fish mortality associated with reduced oxygen levels during the winter months on lakes at high risk. During periods of operation, the aerator units will create areas of open water and weak ice. The BCCF would like to remind residents to stay away from safety fencing placed around the aerators. Also, as a reminder to anglers, it is unlawful to fish within 100m of any active aeration unit (see pg. 10, BC Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis). 100 Mile House Save-On-Foods store manager Craig Lee was joined by 10-year-old prize-winner Kai Flett, right, and his brother Xander, 7, recently. Kai won four tickets to an upcoming NHL game as part of the Every Kid’s Dream contest put on by the Vancouver Canucks, in partnership with Saveon-Foods and BC Hockey.

Kai Flett to skate with Canucks

He’s a little sad he won’t be meeting the recently-traded Roberto Luongo., However, the 100 Mile House goalie Kai Flett, 10, knows he’s in for quite an experience anyway. As part of the Every Kid’s Dream contest put on by the Vancouver Canucks, in partnership with Save-On-Foods and BC Hockey, the local resident won four tickets to the March 19 game. This is when he will take his family to watch the Canucks host the Nashville Predators at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver. As well as the tickets, Flett will meet some of the players and skate with the team before the game, and stand on the blue line during the national anthems. Accompanying Flett will be brother, Xander, 7, and mom and dad, Andrea and Jason.

“I don’t think it has sunk in for him,” says Andrea. “It’s overwhelming. My husband and I can’t think of a more amazing way to end a hockey season.”

FOODSAFE offered

Sprott Shaw College is offering a FOODSAFE Level 1 course in 100 Mile House on March 28. Local satellite campus manager Diana Badke says the college is able to offer the course locally for $90 fee (includes textbook and taxes), thanks to local support from Horton Ventures. Anyone who handles food can benefit, but especially those who serve or prepare food for the general public, she explains. Some who work in the British Columbia food service industry, such as operators of establishments that serve food, and certain employees, are required to have valid FOODSAFE certification. Badke notes people who are the “chief cook-and-bottle washers” at

home and those who prepare food for volunteer work will benefit. Numerous others can help ensure the health and safety of their families, friends or customers by taking the course, she adds,. FOODSAFE Level 1 is a food handling, sanitation and work safety course designed for front line food service workers such as cooks, servers, bussers, dishwashers, and deli workers. The course covers important food and worker safety information, including food-borne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing food, serving food, cleaning and sanitizing. The course will be held at Community Employment Services, 808 Alpine Ave., on March 28, 8 a.m.4:30 p.m. For more information or to register, contact Diana at 778-482-1262 or e-mail to dianab@sprottshaw.com.

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.

Well, lookie here. One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s definitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.

Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.

What’s going on here?
