Cariboo Mining Association lobbying government Rethink new fee structure or miners will take drastic action AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter He says if the new fees go through, “75 per cent won’t stand for it” choosing to take their mining investment elsewhere, or to “go rogue.” President of the Cariboo Mining Association Richard Wittner said with the release of the Mines Permit Free Discussions Paper and the potential for increased fees the association is taking action.
“We have until March 31 to reply and provide our feedback,” he said, adding legislation has already been tabled. Outlined in the discussion paper, released by the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, are fees for an application of work notice. Any testing done up to one hectare would cost $2,000, for any activity more than one hectare up to three hectares has a price tag of $4,000 and any operation more than

three hectares is $6,000. These fees could run up to $300,000 for large scale major mines. “This means if you want to dig test holes it will now cost $2,000 more just to make an application,” Wittner said, adding that in 2012 government doubled the cost of staking a claim, while doubling the amount of assessment work to obtain a claim. “We’re being taxed to death.” Wittner pointed out the
majority of mining operations in the Cariboo are primarily “mom and pop shops, operating with two or three employees. “In 2012 we conducted an economic study on small operations spending here in the Cariboo,” Wittner said. “The study had only 49 respondents out of as many as 400 active small operations in the Cariboo. $13,149,279.00 was spent locally by these 49 operations.”
Now, Wittner said, they’re seeing “a lot” of these miners moving to the Yukon and Alberta, “mine-friendly locations.” A global mining survey for 2012/2013 by the Fraser Institute ranked B.C. at 31 out of 96 jurisdictions for being top ranking jurisdictions. In fact, it was the first time since the Institute’s 2006/2007 survey that a Canadian jurisdiction did not rank first in their survey.
Good day, Quesnel. Thanks for reading — and that includes loyal subscriber L. Glover! To join the Observer family, please call 250-992-2121 and ask for circulation.
“There’s so much talk about diversifying, yet they continue to put up roadblocks,” Wittner said. “If these fees go through we’ll see two things: miners going rogue and not applying for permits, obviously we don’t want that. And the rest of them pulling up their stakes and heading elsewhere.” To add your concerns or input to the Association’s plea to government, email: Cariboo cariboominingassociation@hotmail.com.

Council supports liquor licence
Council recommended a liquor licence application for the Billy Barker Casino and the existing attached outdoor smoking patio at the rear of their business be approved by the Liquor Control Licencing Branch. This application allows the establishment to serve alcohol in the casino and smoking patio as well as within their lounge and other areas that currently have liquor primary licences. Community input was sought by way of a public meeting held on Feb. 24 and no residents attended the meeting nor did any resident provide written comments to the application. The location of the establishment and its proximity to other facilities, hours of liquor service, number of clientele, noise impact on the community in the immediate vicinity and social impacts of the application were all given consideration in council’s recommendation.
Aid for seniors On behalf of the Quesnel Healthier Communities’ Committee, council supported the city’s application for a $20,000 Provincial Healthy Communities Plan H Grant to assist with the continuation of the Seniors’ Walking Program benefiting seniors’ pro-active health, physical and mental wellbeing and, with the additional funds, the committee will review their ability to expand the program to a broader user group.

Business alliance to battle MMBC recycling fees JEFF NAGEL Black Press
An alliance of business groups opposed to the new Multi Material BC recycling system are demanding the province halt the planned May 19 launch and go back to the drawing board. MMBC, an industry stewardship group, is poised to take responsibility for curbside blue box collection – with more containers and material types collected than before – while charging businesses for the recycling of the packaging and paper they generate. But it’s been in a bitter fight with small business groups that complain they are set to pay punishingly high fees, which will then be passed on to consumers. The battle took a new turn Monday, when the Canadian Federation of Independent Business and eight other associations launched a campaign in B.C. newspapers and online at rethinkitbc.ca to amplify the pressure on Victoria. CFIB provincial affairs director Mike Klassen predicted job losses and some business closures as a result of the MMBC regulations and fees. “This is public
policy run amok,” he said. “We are asking British Columbians to talk to the B.C. government to push the pause button on its reckless and red tape-laden program.” B.C. Agriculture Council vice-chair Stan Vander Waal said farmers can’t readily stop packaging strawberries and blueberries in plastic clamshells, because retailers insist that’s what consumers want. “We have to wear the cost,” he said, adding MMBC fees will cost his Chilliwack farm $60,000 to $100,000 a year. Canadian Newspaper Association chairman Peter Kvarnstrom, who is publisher of a paper in Sechelt, warned the the new system will be “catastrophic” to B.C. community and daily newspapers, resulting in job losses in an already challenged industry and reduced service to communities. The opposition groups say they support the aim of the program – to make generators of packaging pay to recycle it – but they dispute the fees and say multinational consumer goods firms like Unilever and Walmart control MMBC and
are manipulating it to their benefit, not that of local businesses. Most of the fees for container waste are double or even quadruple what businesses in Ontario pay to a similar agency. Newspapers say they face a $14-million-a-year bite out of their operations because of the 20 cents per kilogram they will pay on newsprint, compared to less than half a penny in Ontario. Kvarnstrom said newspapers are considering options to create their own newsprint collection system – a move that
could also deprive MMBC of newsprint revenue. Magazine industry reps also warned small B.C. magazines will pay not only for their own paper recycling, but will also effectively subsidize big U.S. magazines like Harper’s or Vogue that will be exempt from MMBC fees on magazines mailed into B.C. MMBC managing director Allen Langdon said MMBC’s higher fees are because they fully finance the program and ensure service for multi-family apartments and rural
depots. He said B.C.’s successful container deposit system also means there’s less recyclable material left here for container stewards to collect and sell, so fees have to be higher to cover the system costs. Environment Minister Mary Polak said most businesses are exempt from the fees if they have under $1 million of retail sales, generate less than a tonne of material or operate out of a single retail outlet, while generators of one to five tonnes per year pay flat fees of $550 or $1,200.

Why You Need Power Of Attorney Do you have arrangements in place for someone to handle your financial affairs if you become sick or incapacitated? Have you left clear instructions regarding the type of medical care you want if you can’t make your wishes known? These two important areas of financial and personal planning shouldn’t be overlooked. While they may seem trivial when you’re healthy, an illness or accident can put your financial and personal life in a state of disarray. Power of attorney is your best defence. Power of attorney is a legal document that allows a person or institution you choose to manage your affairs when you can’t. (In Quebec, this is known as a “mandate.”) Power of attorney for property allows someone to manage your financial affairs. This can include anything from banking and expenses to looking after investments. You can appoint your spouse, a family member, a trusted friend, legal representative or a financial institution such as a trust company. You can assign general power for all your financial affairs, or restricted power of attorney giving responsibility for a narrow range of your finances-for example, investments only. Power of attorney for personal care gives someone the right to make medical decisions on your behalf. (Depending on where in Canada you live, this may also be known as a “health care directive” or “living will.”) When you’re incapacitated by illness or injury you won’t be able to direct your own care-particularly when near death. This could result in treatment you don’t want, such as being kept on life support with no possibility of recovery. A power of attorney for personal care will make your wishes known and assign somebody the legal right to ensure they are carried out. For example, you can specify the degree of medical intervention you will allow, steps to be taken to relieve pain and suffering, or your choice of a nursing home. This type of power of attorney also relieves family members of the pressure of making decisions on medical treatment and prolongation of your life. It’s not difficult to set up power of attorney. Your lawyer can prepare the necessary documents for you. But before you take that step, think about the instructions to be included and to whom powers of attorney will be assigned. For finances, make sure the person you appoint has the capability, time and desire to manage your financial affairs. If those affairs are complex, a financial institution may be the best choice. For personal care, consider your spouse or other close family member. This should be someone who knows you and your wishes well. Discuss your instructions and desires with your potential representative. It’s also a good idea to speak to your doctor about what you should include in your power of attorney for personal care. You should also specify under which circumstances power of attorney will take effect. For example you can specify that one or more doctors must declare that you are no longer able to physically or mentally manage your financial or personal affairs. If you don’t have powers of attorney for property and personal affairs, speak to your lawyer and financial advisor right away. Don’t wait until it’s too late. OPINIONS
A new era L
iquor sales in retail stores are one step closer, with the provincial government unveiling some details about the standalone outlets which can be located within existing grocery stores. Liquor will not be sold in corner or convenience stores, which removes one of the concerns of those who opposed selling liquor beyond the existing sales network. Most convenience stores simply do not have the staff to oversee that the sales of such products conform to the desire to keep them out of the hands of minors. While it is true that such stores sell tobacco products, that is something they have always done, and they are being pushed much harder to ensure that tobacco products are not sold to minors. Still, infractions do occur. Those who currently hold private liquor store licences, which generally go to those with pub licences, will be able to move their licences (presumably via sale or lease) into grocery stores. The current restriction that licences must be for businesses within a fivekilometre limit will be lifted. The standalone stores will be in larger grocery stores, and within the same building – not in standalone buildings, as is the case in Alberta. This makes a lot of sense. Customers will be able to put groceries and liquor in their carts, but must pay for their liquor in designated checkout lines. One step towards promoting B.C.-made beer, wine and spirits it to allow for point-of-sale demonstrating, tastings and advice. While this does take place in liquor stores now, it can be expanded greatly within the confines of a larger grocery store selling a wide variety of products. Sales of liquor in grocery stores begin in 2015. B.C. is entering an exciting era of treating liquor as a product to be fully enjoyed with meals and in social settings, in moderation. –Black Press

Goodbye winter, hello spring I
love the four seasons, and the one I look forward to the most is spring. With all its wonderful qualities, my anticipation of it intensifies since it directly follows winter. Yes, the snow is beautiful, but being cold isn’t my thing. Thursday, March 20 is the first official day, and I’m looking forward to the fresh start. My husband laughs when I say stuff like that, because I’m constantly seeing fresh starts. “The first of the new year, new month, new week, new moon,” he said. “Everything’s a fresh start with you.” Not everything. But I’ll admit to resetting my start button quite frequently, and the first day of my favourite season provides an excellent reason to push it again. Everything becomes so alive at this time of year. The sun shines longer, the flowers begin to bloom, the birds start to chirp and people seem to smile more

On A Brighter Note than ever. “They’re happy because they’re not too hot and they’re not too cold,” my ten-year-old daughter explained. “It’s the perfect amount of degrees in the spring.” Well, it’s definitely the ideal temperature in my opinion, and the warmer weather inspires me to get outside. Even something as simple as a walk by the lake can be a glorious time to breathe in the fresh air and recharge my energy level. “Are you setting any new season’s resolutions?” my friend asked me during a recent hike. New season’s resolutions?
make a joke about being no spring chicken, but he’s almost 67 and still acts like a big happy kid who’s just thrilled to be alive every day. He’s a firm believer that happiness doesn’t come from having the best of everything, but making the best of everything we have, and for that reason, and others, he’s always been a fantastic role model. The older I become, the more I recognize that. I can’t say I’m naturally like he is, but he’s one of the reasons I’ve been writing this column and discovering different ways to be more positive over the last five years. Life can get messy, dark and painful at times, there’s just no escaping that. But as the old proverb says: “No matter how long the winter - spring is sure to follow.” And, now, here it comes, bringing all the joys of the season with it. I’ve never heard of such a thing. But, sure. Why not? I’m always up for a little self review, and an organized date to clarify my goals is right up my alley. Especially after the challenging winter I just had. Benefitting from the outdoors will be one of my intentions. Being an obsessive workaholic, I haven’t always been very good at living in the moment. Connecting with nature can help with that. Doing things I enjoy and spending time with people I love can help with that as well. One of those people I love is my dad, yet spending time with him is difficult since we live a four hour drive from one another. Becoming more like him will continue to be one of my other goals, though. A natural optimist, his warm, colourful personality and sunny disposition actually reminds me of spring. He would probably laugh at that comparison and

Stamp collection aids cancer patients ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Stamps are used less and less in business and personal communication but they still play a vital role in fundraising for the Order of the Eastern Star. Since 1954, members from all chapters across B.C. have collected stamps, postcards, pre-stamped post office envelopes and dogsled mail run envelopes, which are then delivered to the stamp committee in Vancouver for further sorting and evaluation. “Money raised from this fundraiser purchases materials for the making of cancer dressings,” OES’s Lynn Schwehr said. “The dressings we create are sent to the cancer centre in Prince George.” Any extra money is sent directly to cancer research, she added. From 1954 – 2013, stamp collection has raised $435,013.14. Although Schwehr doesn’t know exactly how much Cariboo Champter 71 has raised, she said on average they collect between 11 – 12 pounds of stamps per year. The amount of money raised

provincially dropped from $12,736.28 in 2001 to $8,439.26 in 2013 and Schwehr said this was in large part to the decrease in the use of stamps and postal delivery in general. “Christmas is still a boom in stamp donations thanks in part to the continued practice of sending Christmas cards,” she said. “However, the bulk of Quesnel’s collecting is thanks to local businesses who faithfully collect used stamps and call me to pick them up.” Schwehr is asking local residents to consider collecting used stamps and dropping them off at any of the three locations around town. The locations include Quesnel Cariboo Observer, the new Canadian Cancer Society office in the new Fireside Heating Building at the top of Dragon Lake Hill or at K-MAX on Reid Street. “We depend on the public saving and donating stamps, so we are able to supply cancer dressings for patients,” Schwehr said. OES also collects UPC codes from Campbell’s Soup labels which can also be dropped off at any of the three local boxes.

Alfred faces his challenges head on with determination and optimism
A long journey to wellness ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter
A
lfred enters the room, his eyes are alert, his smiling face open and receptive – good manners, well spoken and engaging. It’s hard to imagine the life he’s led, the challenges he’s faced and the ongoing issues he deals with every day of his life. As a young child, Alfred feared his father for good reason, often finding himself the punching bag for this abusive alcoholic. Between his step-mother and himself, it was a breeding ground for anxiety and other mental trauma that left them scarred for life, both mentally and physically. Alfred loves the woman who raised him (his biological mother died, as a result of her addictions, when Alfred was four) and knew she cared very deeply for him. She left his father many times but kept coming back because of Alfred. “She was my rock,” he said. But Alfred knew he had to get out. At 15, Alfred escaped the nightmare and ran away to his sister’s home in Prince George. He was already smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee and doing the occasional marijuana. A brief return to school and Alfred was off again, this time landing in Whitehorse. He was using alcohol and drugs to cope with his chronic physical and, as yet undiagnosed, mental pain. “I was a functioning addict,” he admitted. He said lots of family members, including his stepmother, were concerned about what he was doing. At this time the bi-polar symptoms were beginning to surface. Alfred learned
his birth mother also suffered from mental health issues and coped with life through an alcoholic haze. “None of the family knew how to cope properly,” he said. “At that time I had a bad attitude. I didn’t let anyone intimidate me. I was having trouble with the public; I was stressed out and withdrawn. But inside I had such anxiety.” A brief run-in with his father at the age of 17 earned Alfred an apology from his former abuser. His dad had also been the product of an abusive father. “The cycle of abuse keeps going,” he said. By 18, he was living with another sister who was using cocaine and she was the first to put a needle in Alfred’s arm, injecting the drugs that would soon take over his life. “I started abusing everything I could get my hands on – acid, cocaine, MDA, speed, crystal meth, pills and alcohol,” he said. “My sister had a recipe to make acid so there were lots of 100 pills in my freezer at any given time; it was very accessible.” By 24, Alfred was deep into addictions, his mental health was poor and he’d spent time in jail. However, that was also a turning
point for Alfred. He began to make the connection between his childhood trauma and the damage he was suffering from in his adult life. “Counselling and many good people took the time to help me,” he said. “Doctors appointments and counselling were everyday occurrences for me.” Six years later, Alfred was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and was still battling additions. Today, at 41, Alfred is proud to say he’s drug free (other than his prescription drugs which are closely monitors by his doctor.) He still deals with chronic pain and his mental health issues but staying as healthy as possible is very important to him. “I don’t want the Quesst Unit [psychiatric unit] to become my permanent address,” he said with a laugh. In the last five years, Alfred is pleased to report he’s only had one manic episode. Over the years, he spoke of the mistreatment and abuse he’s experienced with medical staff, service providers and the public.
Alfred is pleased to be stable and able to help others less fortunate than himself. Annie Gallant photo
“People need training to cope with people with substance abuse and mental health issues,” he said. “Mental health issues are serious and the people who suffer with them don’t want to act the way they do. People in manic states have minds that are going so fast, even the simplest tasks are difficult.” Alfred said he’s experienced intimidation, taunting, yelling, belittling and other humiliating treatment at the hands of insensitive nurses and that’s just not helpful. “A little consideration can be what helps the person, just a little bit of caring can go a long way,” Alfred said. He added sometimes it’s as simple as ensuring they’re on their meds. Alfred will always deal with chronic pain resulting from childhood beatings and some choices as he entered adulthood (he could be facing surgery) and of course his regime of prescribed medications. But he also has plans to go back to school. He’d like to work with people with disabilities. He already gets tremendous satisfaction from helping friends who aren’t as lucky as he is. “I’m now a functional person who helps other people in society everywhere the opportunity presents itself,” he proudly admitted. Every day, Alfred works to remain stable, to minimize the stress in his life and to manage and cope effectively. “The general public shouldn’t be afraid to just say hi,” he said with a smile. “Try to understand and communicate. Be willing to learn about mental health and substance abuse issues.”

The world needs to be a kinder, happier and healthier place where neighbours stand together
A
bout 20 years ago, my boys and I witnessed an eyeopening event. While driving home from school, we passed by an active logging operation. We pulled over to watch. Big machinery always interested us (well, the boys at least). As we watched, tree after tree fell at the will of the workmen and in the space of just a few minutes, we saw a large clearing where, moments
Peggy Corbett Seventh-day Adventist Church
before, was a forest. I hasten to say that I am not against logging a forest. I appreciate the resource that we live with, the benefits we gain from using it and its ability to
regenerate. I am not a forester, but I think what I witnessed was called a “clear cut.” Some would say that “selective” cutting would be a better way to use our forest resources. But as with so many things we do, there often are many right choices (as well as, admittedly, many wrong ones). Most of us have probably seen wellmanaged selectively logged sites that have subsequently blown down. As
mighty as those trees appear, they are also interdependent and rely on each other’s proximity for their stability and strength. What was so “eyepopping” to us as we watched the first event, was how quickly humans can change the landscape and how attentive we must be to the future impact of today’s choices. I find that the same caution applies to our interaction with each other. What I choose to do
or not do with each person I meet affects the tone in my whole community. And even one person can very quickly cause trouble by thoughtless, self-serving criticism and remarks. When I taught school, my objective was to instill in my students the reality that each of them was of infinite worth and that each of them could chose each day to make a positive impact on the world. “Feeling helpless”
often reflects my own laziness. Do I want my neighbourhood to be better, friendlier, safer? Then I need to make what I do, be the difference I want to see. Anne Frank once said, “How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” And this, from a young girl who had just begun her life. Jesus, himself, said that the second greatest command
was to “love your neighbour as yourself.” (see Mark 12:31 and Leviticus 19:18). And the guy who asked, “Who’s my neighbour?” was just wanting to make excuses for himself. I don’t want any excuses; I want the world to be kinder, happier, healthier. I want to take every opportunity to stand by my neighbour. Peggy Corbett is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church congregation.

Taking it international Heading around the world to impress the scouts at home JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Italy in the summer, a pack of new team mates and an international competition – not a bad way to spend August, is it? That wonderful triumvirate is what Jasmine MacDonald is looking forward to when she joins the USA women's softball team at an international softball tournament. MacDonald has been playing softball in Quesnel for 12 years, back catcher being her chosen position, taking vacations to Okanagan in the summer to hone her skills there and has recently been applying for universities down south, for which she has a profile on the NCSA website. MacDonald was focused on catching some scholarships on the back of her softball skills, after she graduated early, with a back up plan of going to school at CNC, when a chance to join the American softball team in Italy came out of nowhere. "I got an e-mail and they were offering me a spot," MacDonald said. They had seen her NCSA profile with her stats and video of her playing and had decided to invite her out. And this, much like her early graduation, as a bit earlier in life than most do – she's the youngest on the team so far, a 17-year-old on a team of 18-19-year-olds. That's not the only difference between her and

her team mates, as she's a Canadian girl on an American team, which means they run in slightly different circles, so she's not met a single one of the girls and that may not change for a while. "I meet every single one of the girls in August in Rome," she said. "That is, if I don't fly out from here I meet them in Texas." So that's 37 different countries from around Europe, an unknown team and the knowledge that the American team has dominated the competition for some years now. Beside that, scouts will be there, watching every move and evaluating players to see who would do well in the higher leagues, or, say, if someone should get a scholarship to some college down in the United States. So there is a bit of pressure on MacDonald, though she seems to be handling it well and keeping her sights on the possible benefits. "I'm extremely nervous," she said. "It's a huge opportunity and it'll provide a lot of opportunities if I do well." With five months until there's traction for any nervous energy, MacDonald
has a lot of time in her hands. "The moment I step on the field it will all go away, but it's all that's leading up to that which is nerve wracking," she said. Though the long wait may be a bit of a terror from a nerves stand point, it does allow MacDonald time to make sure she'll be at the top of her game come the tournament. Starting now, the diamonds are still truly in the rough, MacDonald has started her training routine. She's working with a couple pitchers in town and hitting the gym as often as she can. She'll also be training at the Okanagan camp she attended when she was young. So she has a full schedule, or a least what passes for full when you're not on a team playing up to 16 games in six days, all while trying to take in as much of the local colour as possible. But luckily for MacDonald, the organizers know they can't ask young women to go to Italy and not see anything outside of a ball diamond. So while there will be a lot of training as a team in the first four days in Italy, there's also time scheduled to do the tourist thing. "We get to see a bit of Italy," she said. "The first four days we get to see something in the morning and then we practice non-stop in the evening." Now that's real busy.
It’s been a continued upward trend no matter the battles for the Waveriders this season and, during last weekend’s long course meet in Kamloops, the trend continued despite the changeover from the short course the team trains with. Coach Jeritt Brink is impressed with the momentum his swimmers have this year. “The end of this season is going to be great I think,” he said. “It’s steady improvement. These kids are not showing any signs of letting up. They’re all hungry for it; it’s really exciting.” The swim also marks the beginning of long course swimming, moving from the 25m long pool they train in to the Olympic sized 50m pool. This gives the swimmers half as many kicks off the wall and can play havoc with their pace. “It’s different feeling cause there’s 25 metres more so you’re looking for the wall,” Garnet Currie said. The change in venue-size cause at least one sketchy turn because a swimmer was not familiar with the length. Brink said the swimmers reacted really well to their first long course meet of the year for the most part. “We were just at the Valentine meet two weeks earlier and they had taken off so much time there, then to go into this long course meet, which is slower, and be right on their best times or make personal best times in long course, that’s what made me the happiest,” he said. Almost all seven of the swimmers that made the trip were equally excited by the meet. Brink said going into the meet, he had focused on the flip turn, the dolphin kicks coming out of the turn and the first stroke after each turn. And the focus paid off according to Brink, who noticed the swimmers nailing each of the details in almost every swim. Billy Swyers, 10, was the high scorer for the team this weekend, continuing a very successful season, that had the 10-year-old searching for standards aimed at

11-year-olds. “Early in the season he started off picking off A standards and then, all the sudden, we go to this meet, and he is less than two seconds on two events for making his AA standard,” Brink said. Swyers was top five in all of his events for age 10 and under. He came third in 50 Back, 100 Back, 50 Breast and 100 Breast and second in 200 Free. “It was good,” Swyers said. “Especially considering I have half the year left to find the time.” Brink said he is confident that Swyers will be able to find the extra two seconds needed by the end of the long course season at the end of June. Gavin Currie, eight, was top 10 in three of her events in the 10 and under category. She came 10th in 100 Breast, eighth in 200 Free and seventh in 50 Breast Grace Currie recently aged up to the 11-year-old category. She was top eight in five of her events. She came eighth in 100 Free, 100 Breast and 200 Breast, seventh in 200 Back and fifth in 200 Free. Darby O’Hara, 10, came eighth in 50 Fly, 100 Back and seventhth in 200 Free in the 10 and under group. Emerie Watson, 12, just back from AA, swam in the age 12-13 group. She came seventh in 200 Free, fourth in 200 Back and third in 100 Back. Garnet Currie, 13, came second in 100 Free and 200 Free, first in 400 Free for 12-13 year-olds. He came fifth in 200 Free, 400 Free, 200 Breast, seventh in 100 Back and 6th in 200 Back Next up for the Waveriders is the Prince George Dental Moose Meet April 11-13.

Gold rings in provincials
JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Helping the Prince George ringette U14B team to claim the provincial title, Quesnel Skater Alexi Christienson netted an impressive seven goals last weekend and put a gold medal over her head. "It was great getting the gold in Kelowna, but the whole province was at provincials – it was awesome," Christienson said.
Christienson scored in every one of the games and netted a hat trick as well during the tournament. After a silver medal performance last year and a gold in a major tournament in Kelowna in February, the team figured they had a chance to win the big one this year. The P.G. team didn’t lose a single game, but did tie their first on Friday, which was against Christienson’s hometown team.
The game started out with Prince George dominating 3-1 in the first half, but Quesnel made a comeback in the second half, when Christienson put in her goal, to close out the game 5-5. For their second game, Prince George played against the Shuswap. It proved to be a close game, with Christienson netting the only P.G. goal in the first half, which ended in a 1-1 tie.
Christienson took two more points in the second half to complete a hat trick, adding three points of the game to the 4-3, in favour of P.G., winning score. Saturday, P.G. dominated both Kelowna, 8-3, and Vernon, 7-5, with Christienson scoring a goal in each game, catapulting the team into the gold medal final against Shuswap.
Shuswap proved to be a suitable challenge for gold, as after the first period, it was all tied up at four a-piece. “It was really nerve wracking,” Christienson said. “We were nervous and thinking ‘can we do this?’” But surety came in the second as they piled on the goals and P.G. ran away with the game, 9-5.

Earthquake appointment draws NDP ire Tom Fletcher Black Press Former Chilliwack MLA John Les will be paid up to $140,000 to chair a province-wide consultation to report by the end of the year on earthquake preparedness. Attorney General Suzanne Anton announced Tuesday that Les was chosen to chair the consultation, with Henry Renteria, former director of California's Office of Emergency Services, serving as vice chair. Les has unique experience as a former mayor of Chilliwack and former solicitor general in charge of the provincial emergency program, Anton said. That experience is why Les will be paid more than Renteria, who will make up to $100,000. Anton refused to say if any other candidates were interviewed for the job. It is the second appointment for Les since retiring as an MLA before the 2013 election. He is also making up to $60,000 a year to chair the B.C. Farm Industry Review Board, to which he was appointed last November for a three-year term. Anton said Les will forgo sev-
erance pay, an extension of the $101,000 MLA salary given to retiring and defeated MLAs for up to 15 months, because he has other income. Les is also registered as a lobbyist, representing Belkorp Environmental Services, which operates the Cache Creek landfill. Belkorp is promoting garbage recycling facilities instead of additional incineration proposed by Metro Vancouver as the Cache Creek facility fills up. NDP critic Shane Simpson said the apparent lack of a candidate search shows the appointment is patronage for a long-time supporter of the B.C. Liberals. "Here we have this retired politician who has a full pension, already has a $60,000 patronage appointment, is a lobbyist, and now is about to get another $140,000 for some dubious notion he's an expert about emergency preparedness," Simpson said. "It truly does make the case that Les is more in this case." The Canadian Taxpayers' Federation calculates that after 12 years as an MLA, Les qualifies for $48,289 a year in MLA pension once he turns 65.

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.
Well, lookie here. One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s definitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.
Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.
What’s going on here?

So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substantially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada. Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1. It comes with a 228hp 2.0-litre turbocharged gas engine capable of hitting 100 km/h in less than six seconds. I will reveal it will sell for more than $40,000 in the UK. It’s fast, it’s a premium offering and I’ll eat my hat if it shows up here. All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here. And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle. And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Tough to nail down just one but I am sure one of these would spark some interest. 2014 Ford Explorer Sport is a performance version of its popular SUV. The headlights and taillights have been blacked out to give it a sporty appearance. 20-inch painted and machined wheels allow room for the larger brakes that help it stop faster and improve performance when towing. Classic lookalikes sell at (almost) bargain prices ‘‘
About 10 grand buys a Triumph GT6 that many will mistake for a Jag. Rob Sass
’’
The Pebble Beach auctions are generally not the place for bargain hunters. It’s nothing unusual for $300 million in automotive merchandise to change hands with some lots bringing more than $10 million and a staggering 100-plus cars capable of cracking the $1 million mark. Just 20 or 30 years ago, many of these cars were attainable to people of ordinary means. So what’s an ordinary mortal whose been priced out of the Ferrari and Cobra market to do? Look at some alternatives that provide 90 percent of the bang for 5 percent of the
buck. Here are some of our favorites: 1963 Shelby Cobra/1992 Dodge Viper: Everybody loves a Cobra. Carroll Shelby’s idea of stuffing an American V-8 in a lightweight British sports car was an instant hit. The trouble is, if you didn’t buy one in the early 1980s when they were about $30,000, your chances of acquiring one are pretty slim for much less than a million. So, instead of a Cobra replica you’ll always have to make excuses for, why not buy its spiritual successor, the Dodge Viper? Early examples of this V-10
1963 Shelby Cobra.
— the bodies were even built in Italy — but in place of a complex and expensive V-12, most had smallblock Ford V-8 power, with some tuned by the famous American race shop Holman and Moody. About 400 Italias were built, and they’re not cheap (RM Auctions sold one in 2007 for $44,000). They cost a fraction of the Ferrari but have most of the looks and performance, if not the pedigree. 1965 Jaguar XKE coupe/1973 Triumph GT6: The Jaguar XKE is generally accepted as one of the prettiest cars of all time.
powered, raw and uncompromising, car can still be had for less than what Cobras were selling for 30 years ago. 1967 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 N.A.R.T. Spider/Intermeccanica Italia: One example recently sold for around $17 million. But unknown to most people, it has an American-powered near doppelganger that costs a fraction of the price. Back in the 1960s, Canadian Frank Reisner dreamed of building Ferrari-like GT cars with American V-8 power. His Intermeccanica Italia roadster hit the mark in terms of Ferrari-like style

And its great looks don’t come cheap. The first and most desirable series of the beloved XKE or E-Type now regularly brings more than $100,000. But few people know that fellow British sports car company Triumph made a three-quarter scale near replica of the E-Type, the Triumph GT6 that was also powered by a smooth and throaty straight six (albeit one that was half the size). About 10 grand buys a Triumph GT6 that many will mistake for a Jag.

The diminutive Fiat 500 goes big ‘‘
Perhaps what really stands about this compact car is just how much people room there is inside.
’’
Alexandra Straub
The Fiat 500 is cute but might not be the most practical choice as a family vehicle. Sure, it has room for four, a peppy personality (even with its base 101 horsepower engine,) but accessing the rear seats isn’t the easiest and the cargo room is minimal. Enter the all-new-for-2014 Fiat 500L: The “L” stands for “large” so those interior volume deficiencies listed with its pint-sized sibling are no more.
Dimensionally, the L is 27 inches longer, 6 inches taller in height and in width and there’s an extra 42 percent when it comes to inside space. But wait, there’s more. Literally. The L comes with two additional doors to allow for easy access to the rear seats. And room for five passengers. It loses a little bit of its pinch-the-cheeks cuteness but its practicality makes up for it.
In the driver’s seat, you have an almost unadulterated outward visibility. The 500L features a segment-exclusive glass from the A- to D-pillars that provide nearly 360-degree panoramic views. Parking is easy because you can pretty much see out of all four corners. And the 500L – even with its “large” designation – still fits comfortably into urban continued on page B18

settings. Driving the 500L, I noticed it doesn’t have quite the same amount of panache as the 500 Turbo. Granted, it’s a heavier vehicle. But to still keep some of the driving fun behind the wheel, Fiat has outfitted it with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine that provides 160 horsepower, 184 lb-ft. of torque. It’s also is available with two transmission options. Firstly, there’s a 6-speed manual. Then there’s an available 6−Speed Euro Twin Clutch “automatic.” The latter of the two costs an additional $1,450 and came equipped on my 500L Lounge trim. To be honest, this dual clutch transmission was my least favourite part of the vehicle. It felt as though the gearing was off or it had some sort of gremlin inside causing a raucous to disturb the smooth functionality of what I would have expected. On the flip side, there’s nothing that I felt was fundamentally wrong with it. The transmission changed gears, got the car moving and did exactly what it was supposed to do. It also just felt weird/awkward to me and unlike any other dual clutch transmission, I’ve operated. Perhaps it is one of those features I would just need to get used to over time but our time together wasn’t long enough for me to embrace its quirks! There were, however, other highlights of the 500L. The Lounge trim comes standard with leather trimmed bucket seats and front heated seats, perfect for those chilly mornings. An upgraded item that was optioned on the
L was the Uconnect system with a 6.5-inch screen (the standard is a 5-inch screen) complete with Bluetooth, Sirius satellite radio and a Beats Premium Audio System ($500.) If you’re a music lover, this is a great to add to a Fiat. Besides, I find that the Uconnect media interface is one of the most intuitive infotainment systems to work with in the industry. Electronic Stability Control (ESC,) Hill Start Assist and 4−Wheel ABS brakes are part of its DNA along with a ParkView rear back−up camera, dual zone climate controls and steering wheel mounted audio controls. When cruising along at highway speeds, road noise is kept to a minimum, which allowed me to enjoy the music via the Beats stereo system a little more. In corners, the 500L doesn’t have as tight of a setup as the 500, so don’t push it too hard since body roll is more evident. Perhaps what really stands about this compact car is just how much people room there is inside. I never felt cramped nor did my passengers. Not to mention the 633L (22.4 cubic feet) of storage behind the second row seats. The MSRP of the 2014 Fiat 500L Lounge is $25,995. With the options and destination, the price as tested comes to $30,850. Visit www.fiatcanada.com for more information Alexandra.Straub@drivewaybc.ca

Confessions of a Curber I was itching to sell another car. I‘d spent my first cash quickly. The new TV looked great in my living room. So I scrounged the dealer lots in my neighbourhood. I found the perfect car at a small dealership not far from my house. Gray with four doors. Everything was still intact, but it was priced low. The dealer gave me the car’s history right away. It had been in three accidents over its lifetime. Nothing too major, but damage was done and repaired. I couldn’t spot the repairs. So, I happily bought it and registered it. I didn’t want my wife and kids to know what I was up to, so I parked it around the block. I knew it would be gone in a few days. This time, I used Kijiji and Craigslist. “Car for sale. Served me well, but wife wants a new car. Accident and damage free. Looking to sell fast, low price. Cash only. Call cell for info.” I got a text message from a woman across town. I told her I’d meet her at a nearby gas station and would throw in a free tank of gas. She was thrilled. When I met her, she told me that she needed a cheap, dependable vehicle to get to her new job. She’dd been taking the bus for weeks and was tired of her commute. To my annoyance, she wanted to check the vehicle thoroughly. So I distracted her. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I
wanted to keep my wife happy. She nodded sympathetically. As she handed me the money, she asked if the vehicle was in any accidents. Now, I’m not a good liar. So I simply said, No. It’s her fault for not asking for a CarProof or ICBC vehicle history report. That seemed to do it. She was pleased and drove away with a smile on her face. As for me, I went home with a fat wallet. A few days later, I got a text: “Got CarProof report. Three accidents?!?!? Need money back now!!!” I panicked. But not for long. I was getting good at this. I just got a new cell number. She didn’t know my name – that old fake ID worked great. And she had no idea where I lived. Finding me would wear her out. I was in the clear. But will I be so lucky next time? *Curber – An individual posing as a private seller, but selling vehicles for profit as a business. A curber often misrepresents the history and condition of a vehicle. Curbers offer none of the protections the law provides for purchases from a Vehicle Sales Authority licensed dealer. aler.

Refreshed RX350 ups the sportiness factor The 2014 RX is a mid-cycle refresh of the model that was introduced in 2010. Unfortunately, Lexus didn’t refresh the inside of the cabin at all, keeping the updates to the exterior and driveline. Not to say that the inside is a disappointment, rather that some things could be tweaked. I’ll start with the positives. The cabin has plenty of room for a family of four with a big back seat and lots of legroom. The materials used are of the highest order and the RX put together well. The controller for the communications and navigation system is unique in the industry, mimicking a computer mouse. It feels very natural and the driver rarely needs to take their eyes of the road. The array of buttons and their less than logical layout could do with an update. The F-Sport comes which heated and cooled seats but it took me about five minutes to locate the switch in the centre armrest. The dial for the tuner is as far away from the driver as it could be and the seating position is very high. Drive At the heart of all RX 350 models is a very versatile 3.5L V6 engine with 270hp. The F-Sport is made sportier by the inclusion of an 8-speed automatic transmission instead of the regular 6-speed unit. By adding two more gears this new model really jumps away from a stop and pulls very well to highway speeds. Two extra gears make a world of difference, helping to bring the engine to life and improving fuel economy. The suspension has also been modified to include a sport tuned dampers and springs. I could certainly tell this RX is different, in some city conditions, the ride can
Drives-U-Crazy Hanging a left on a red Teaching people the unusual rules of the road would make driving a little less frustrating in busy centres. For instance, everybody knows that it is legal to make a right turn on a red light. However, it seems few people realize it is fine to hang a left on red from a two-way street into a one-way street. If there are no vehicles approaching from your right on the green it’s perfectly safe and efficient and reduces lengthy backups. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
be very choppy and not what typical Lexus buyers would expect. The up side is that open road driving is much more sure-footed and dynamic. When the RX is thrown off-centre the top heavy nature of the RX shows its head, the centre of gravity feels much higher than some of the other sporty models in this class. Verdict The RX350 is the best seller in the Lexus line for good reason. It offers the same interior space as a mid-sized sedan but sits higher for greater outward viability, comes standard with all-wheel drive and PLEASE READ THE FINE PRINT: Offers valid until March 31, 2014. 14 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport Toyota is known for building high quality cars with fantastic resale value and has grabbed more Canadian Black Book “Best Retained Value” Awards than any other manufacturer. In the Lexus line of cars and SUVs, the best seller by far is the RX 350 midsized SUV. Built using parts common to other Lexus and Toyota products, it represents a lot of what Toyota/Lexus is doing right. The engine is powerful but still thrifty enough for most families, the space is generous and the design is elegant. For buyers that are looking for a bit more performance from the RX, the F-Sport package adds visual and emotional punch. Looks Over the last several years, Lexus has taken a more aggressive design approach with its latest introductions. The front grille is more dynamic, designed to mimic a spindle used in a fabric loom. This is a tip of the hat to the origins of the Toyota Company as a textile maker. LED marker lights and a deeper chin spoiler frame the more aggressive grille. The larger 19-inch wheels come in a smoked satin finish and the suspension is tweaked for more performance. Around back, all RX 350 models come with a power rear lift gate. One of the reasons the RX is so popular is the aggressive starting price. The base model, with the same engine as this F-Sport, starts at $46,150 making it a very attractive alternative to buying a spendy German SUV. The F-Sport model is $55,400 but comes almost fully loaded, with only two options available, the Intuitive Parking Assist and Heads up Display, which brings the price to $58,850 Inside
has a high resale value. The RX 350 F-Sport takes all the goodness of the regular RX and makes it a bit more aggressive, especially in the acceleration front. Potential buyers would be well advised to drive both the regular model and this sportier version to see if you can live with the choppy ride, it really is dramatic. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca The Lowdown Power: 3.5L V6 with 270hp Fill-up: 11.2L/7.7L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $46,150$55,400 Follow us at:

You could be forgiven for thinking this car was the latest example of an Italian supercar. Well it is and it isn’t. It’s a PassoCorto designed in Italy for Korean car manufacturer Hyundai. It’s the result of a competition staged by Hyundai at the famous Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Turin, Italy, to create a sports car that would appeal to Generation Y consumers. The final concept was displayed on the IED stand at the 2014 Salon International de l'Auto in Geneva, Switzerland. The brief, drawn up by Hyundai’s European R&D centre in Rüsselheim, Germany, called for the 16 students on the Transportation Design masters’ course at IED to draw

Pic of the week and design the car of their dreams. The car should be one they would want to buy and drive, targeting Generation Y –consumers born between the 1980s and the early years of this millennium, who have grown up with computers and are used to being connected at all times. The result is a dramatic, compact and ultra-lightweight sports car concept called PassoCorto – Italian for ‘short wheelbase’. The compact two-seater weighs just 840 kg thanks to its carbon fibre chassis and is powered by a rear-mid mounted four-cylinder in-line 1,6-litre bi-turbo engine.
