The days of costumed mascots and Greater Victoria mayors awkwardly rappelling down the side of a downtown Victoria office building are no more. Standard Life, which for the past seven years has hosted the Easter Seals Drop Zone for the Kids event at its 1175 Douglas St. building, told Easter Seals in 2012 that last

year's event would be its last, said Standard Life spokesperson AnneJulie Gratton. "Easter Seals is a great organization, but we've changed in terms of our community investments over the years," Gratton said. "What we're supporting (now) is youth unemployment programs and school perseverance. So based on those guidelines, it just didn't fit with what we're doing now across the country." Verna Wright, Easter Seals special events co-ordinator, said Easter Seals approached several other building owners in Greater Victoria but were unable to secure

a new location for the rappelling event. "We're really sad," she said. "(The building owners) may change their mind next year, but I kind of doubt it. For the last few years, they weren't really crazy about the idea." Drop Zone raised $113,000 last September for Camp Shawnigan, a summer camp for children with mental, cognitive or physical disabilities. Easter Seals sends 300 kids through the week-long camp each summer at a cost of $2,400 per child. Wright announced this week the Drop Zone fundraiser is indefi-

nitely cancelled. "We have other events, and we're hoping they'll be able to make enough money to keep supporting the camp. We can't close it," she said. Upcoming Easter Seals fundraisers include the second annual Splash of Colour Family Fun Run for the Kids, Apr. 19 at Royal Roads University. The five-kilometre run includes bright-coloured paint explosions throughout the race. See splashofcolor.ca for more information. On May 31 and June 1, the Easter Seals 24-Hour Relay for the Kids takes place at University of

Victoria Centennial Stadium. Visit 24hourrelay.com for more. Vancouver's Drop Zone event will still take place this year, and Wright said interested participants are still invited to attend. "Whatever they raise from Island teams will come to us," she said. "But no more Drop Zone here, unfortunately." dpalmer@vicnews.com

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.

Well, lookie here. One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s definitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.

Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.

What’s going on here?

Helps launches vote pledge campaign Mayoralty candidate hopes to engage eligible voters who failed to cast a ballot in the 2011 municipal election Daniel Palmer News staff

Victoria Coun. Lisa Helps is taking a page out of Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi’s playbook and launching an online voter engagement campaign ahead of next fall’s election. Helps’ website, votepledge2014.ca, aims to engage the 73 per cent of eligible Victoria residents – many of those younger voters – who failed to cast a ballot in the 2011 municipal elec-

tion. “It’s about engaging younger citizens to become part of the glue that holds their community together, and about reinvigorating democracy at the local level,” said Helps, who intends to run for Victoria mayor in November. Campaign organizers hope to bring neighbours together at a grassroots level to discuss everything from sewage treatment to downtown vibrancy to community centres well ahead of candidate debates next fall, Helps said. “If you’ve never organized a gathering in your house to explore these issues, why not now,” she said. Jeremy Loveday, Victoria’s youth poet laureate mentor and an established spoken word poet, is supporting the campaign because he’s witnessed a disconnect between young people’s passion and their apathy with voting.

“I think a lot of citizens don’t know exactly what municipal governments do and how much power it actually has,” Loveday said. “A lot of people think youth are apathetic. They’re really not. They’re actually really passionate and informed, but they’re not voting, so there’s a gap there.” Loveday spoke at the launch of votepledge2014. ca at the Victoria Public Market Wednesday. While the campaign is targeting Victoria residents and administered by Helps’ mayoral campaign team, she said the site will still allow people from outside B.C.’s capital to join as well. “It doesn’t say anywhere you need to be in Victoria to sign up,” she said. “If a lot of people do, that would really speak to a desire for change.” Visit votepledge2014.ca for more information. dpalmer@vicnews.com

CRD sewage sludge pipeline route unveiled The Capital Regional District’s Seaterra program unveiled its chosen route for a sewage sludge pipeline between the project’s two major proposed sewage plants. The sewage conveyance pipeline would run from a wastewater treatment plant at McLoughlin Point through Esquimalt, Victoria and parts of Saanich to a biosolids plant at Hartland landfill. Interurban Road would be the most affected major roadway during construction. The pipeline route, which requires the installation of 18 kilometres of underground pipes in both directions, would run entirely within existing rightof-ways for the three municipalities, according to a Seaterra press release. An Environmental Impact Study for the conveyance pipe will be completed in the coming months, the release stated. Upcoming information sessions for nearby neighbours are being organized and will be announced in the coming weeks. Pumping stations are also required to pump the sewage uphill to Hartland. Locations being considered include: • Grange/Portage Road at the Trans-Canada Highway • Interurban Road near the B.C. Hydro Substation • Wallace Road at West Saanich Road • Willis Point Road across from Hartland Landfill editor@vicnews.com

Business alliance battles recycling fees Groups urge province to pause plan for containers and paper Jeff Nagel Black Press

An alliance of business groups opposed to the new Multi Material B.C. recycling system are demanding the province halt the planned May 19 launch and go back to the drawing board. MMBC, an industry stewardship group, is poised to take responsibility for curbside blue box collection – with more containers and material types collected than before – while charging businesses for the recycling of the packaging and paper they generate. But it’s been in a bitter fight with small business groups that complain they are set to pay punishingly high fees, which will then be passed on to consumers. The battle took a new turn Monday, when the Canadian Federation of Independent Business and eight other associations launched a campaign in B.C. newspapers and online at rethinkitbc.ca to amplify the pressure on Victoria. CFIB provincial affairs director Mike Klassen predicted job losses and some business closures as a result of the MMBC regulations and fees. “This is public policy run amok,” he said. “We are asking British Columbians to talk to the B.C. government to

push the pause button on its reckless and red tape-laden program.” B.C. Agriculture Council vice-chair Stan Vander Waal said farmers can’t readily stop packaging strawberries and blueberries in plastic clamshells, because retailers insist that’s what consumers want. “We have to wear the cost,” he said, adding MMBC fees will cost his Chilliwack farm $60,000 to $100,000 a year. “It goes directly against growing agriculture.” Canadian Newspaper Association chairman Peter Kvarnstrom, who is publisher of a paper in Sechelt, warned the the new system will be “catastrophic” to B.C. community and daily newspapers, resulting in job losses in an already challenged industry and reduced service to communities. The opposition groups say they support the aim of the program – to make generators of packaging pay to recycle it – but they dispute the fees and say multinational consumer goods firms like Unilever and Walmart control MMBC and are manipulating it to their benefit, not that of local businesses. Most of the fees for container waste are double or even quadruple what businesses in Ontario pay to a similar agency. Newspapers say they face a $14-million-a-year bite out of their operations because of the 20 cents per kilogram they will pay on newsprint, compared to less than half a penny in Ontario. They contend a high proportion of newsprint is already recycled in B.C. through blue boxes.

Kvarnstrom said newspapers are considering options to create their own newsprint collection system – a move that could also deprive MMBC of newsprint revenue and undermine the program’s viability. Magazine industry reps also warned small B.C. magazines will pay not only for their own paper recycling, but will also effectively subsidize big U.S. magazines like Harper’s or Vogue that will be exempt from MMBC fees on magazines mailed into B.C. Printers predict some orders will shift to presses in the U.S. or Alberta to skirt the fees, costing jobs in B.C. MMBC managing director Allen Langdon said MMBC’s higher fees are because they fully finance the pro-

gram and ensure service for multifamily apartments and rural depots, in contrast to Ontario’s more limited focus on single-family homes. He said B.C.’s successful container deposit system also means there’s less recyclable material left here for container stewards to collect and sell, so fees have to be higher to cover the system costs. Environment Minister Mary Polak said most businesses are exempt from the fees if they have under $1 million of retail sales, generate less than a tonne of material or operate out of a single retail outlet, while generators of one to five tonnes per year pay flat fees of $550 or $1,200. editor@vicnews.com

Politics isn’t entertainment Most people, when they read the words “zoning decision” or “bylaw amendment,” will turn the page (don’t do it!) or their eyes will begin to glaze over. Such is the reality of local politics. And unless there’s a contentious community issue up for debate, council meetings – no matter where in Canada you live – don’t draw big crowds. The same goes for the municipal elections we hold every three (soon to be four) years. Turnout for those is pretty abysmal. In the 2011 civic election, Langford saw some of the lowest numbers in the province, with just 14 per cent of voters casting ballots. Most Greater Victoria municipalities attracted around 25 per cent turnout (Saanich, 25; Victoria, 27), while some, like Oak Bay, North Saanich and Metchosin surpassed the 40 per cent mark. The idea of politics as a serious democratic process is rapidly fading, replaced by a form of entertainment starring a host of colourful characters whose kooky actions and personal life details become our water-cooler discussions. We’re fortunate that Greater Victoria politics isn’t usually overshadowed by politicians – the issues still dominate. But it’s evident that not even the issues are enough to draw people on election day. We have to applaud Victoria Coun. Lisa Helps for trying to change that. This week she launched a new campaign, Vote Pledge 2014, that aims to get voters engaged in municipal politics. The idea behind her campaign is that people are feeling a major disconnect between them and what politics have become. She wants people to feel not just engaged, but like they can make a difference by having a voice in their community. We hope people all over the region – no matter your political views – consider how meaningful this campaign can be and the positive impact it can have, just by taking the simple first step of casting a ballot on Nov. 15. Politics doesn’t exist for our entertainment. Local governments have a lot of power on the issues – yes, zoning and bylaws – that impact your day-to-day life. Being engaged, even on the most basic level of voting, means you care enough about your community that you are trying to make it a better place. It’s the same reason most people get into municipal politics.

Service missed at tax office When I visited the Canada Revenue Agency’s Tax Services office this week to drop off my 2013 income-tax return, I was appalled to discover that this huge building at the corner of Vancouver Street and Pandora Avenue has been converted into what amounts to a giant call centre and citizens can no longer obtain personal service or even enter the building to pick up tax forms and information booklets. Apparently this change was announced by the federal government a few months ago as part of one of its notorious omnibus tax bills. But I missed that under-the-radar “announcement” and I clearly wasn’t the only one who did. During the five minutes or so that I spent reading the notices posted on the locked doors, no fewer than four other people came to the entrance of the building and were shocked to discover they could no longer receive personal help with their tax problems from the staff in the building. They included an elderly gentleman who was pushing his wife in a wheelchair. He was, quite understandably, so angry and upset that he began rapping on the locked doors in frustration. To add insult to injury, every square inch of the nine glass panels

at the entrance to the building has been carefully covered with opaque paper. What could possibly be happening on the other side of these locked doors that is so secret that citizens aren’t even being permitted to peek through the glass? Even if any visitors to the building happen to have X-ray vision they should still be careful since there are two bilingual signs at the entrance warning: “This area is under 24-hour closed-circuit television surveillance.” Surely, at the very minimum, a commissionaire could be stationed in the lobby of the building and tax forms and information materials could be made available to the public. Resource jobs inherently short-lived I am writing in response to two letters that appeared in the Friday, March 7 edition. The first stated that the Prosperity Mine proposal, turned down again on its second proposal, would have created “tens of thousands of secure, high-paying jobs” in the region. Not only are the numbers unproven, but the legacy of the

resource industry in the area points to the opposite. Resource industry jobs often last only a generation or two at most before depletion, foreign competition and consolidation. What they leave behind is a much longer legacy of environmental degradation and, in this case, the exclusion and disenfranchisement of First Nations. The second letter, on Mike Farnworth’s bid for NDP leadership, makes the claim that he is only “in it” for the money. If only those who knew they could win entered politics, we would have a one party system. On the other hand, privatization under the Liberals has largely benefited those with connections to the party and its leaders. Oak Bay voted in a Green MLA in the last election, and the seat has previously been a tight contest between the Liberals and NDP. I’ll wager that there are others in Oak Bay who, like myself, have a very different take on both the issue of the NDP leadership and the Prosperity Mine. K. Supergroup Mounties sparks creative awakening Canadian acts band together, yield unexpected results Natalie North News staff

A hodgepodge of musicians mingled backstage at a live taping of Q with Jian Ghomeshi in the run up to the 2009 Juno Awards. Among them Hot Hot Heat and Hawksley Workman, the latter unaware of just how much influence he had on the former and both unable to predict what kind of impact they would have on their futures. Though there may be some dispute over the origin story behind the relatively newly formed Canadian pop supergroup Mounties (Workman, Hot Hot Heat’s Steve Bays and Ryan Dahle of Limblifter), this is where the seeds of that history were first sewn. Steve Bays, the Victoria-born Hot Hot Heat frontman had discovered Workman’s (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves at a formative time when he was experimenting with vocals for the first time alongside a newfound obsession with the Beatles, shifting the show promoter’s trajectory from more of an experimental, math rock sound towards what would become Hot Hot Heat.

“I tried to convey the importance that record had on my life to him,” Bays says. “He just kept saying, ‘Don’t you feel like you invented a sound with Hot Hot Heat and everybody else stole it and became way more successful?’ He was obsessed with the fact that we weren’t more successful, which I guess was his way of giving a compliment.” Regardless of whether or not their messages were received, a connection was made over their similar sensibilities in the Canadian music industry. “Most people don’t really talk about that,” says Bays. “It’s all about existentialism, sex drugs and rock and roll. He talked about it like he was going to be doing this for the rest of his life. I liked that he was a behind the scenes guy and a poet and a total weirdo. And he loves to drink wine and so do I.” Bays, also one half of electronic yacht rock duo Fur Trade, producer and owner of private recording studio, Tugboat Pl., already had plenty on the go and wasn’t looking for another project. But when their friendship eventually led them to the studio together – with Bays set to produce Workman’s album and Dahle along for the session – their chemistry incited something else entirely. “As soon as (Workman) sat down at the drums, he started

playing this ridiculous, Jon Bonham-esque beat,” Bays says. “I had no idea he was such a crazy drummer. I just started playing along on keys and Ryan started playing along on guitar. Before we knew it, we had started a whole new sound, for us at least. It just felt like a band.” About 70 per cent of their debut album Trash Rock Legacy,

released earlier this month, was recorded live, excerpts from three guys, drinking wine, enjoying life and jamming, beginning with that first experience in the summer of 2012 in Vancouver. “Ryan has his Airstream (trailer) in front of the studio, so we were hanging out in there, talking about ridiculous concepts. It just felt like a really artful experience.”

Bays and Workman have since begun directing and producing video (beginning with a music video for The Mohrs) under Antler and Power, their film production project through which they’d hope to shoot narrative works as well. And with their sole live experience with Mounties to date (at last September’s Rifflandia) an extremely positive one, they’re excited to engage in the rock machine with Mounties. “That was the trigger for us when we said: ‘Yes, we definitely want to do this more. Now we know what it feels like to be on stage together. Now we know what we sound like. It was one of those things where we were just having so much fun. The entire existence of the band just felt like one big rock ‘n’ roll party that I never expected to have at 35 years old.” Mounties play an early show (doors at 7 p.m.) at Sugar Nightclub March 20 with Rich Aucoin and JPNS GIRLS. H.M.S. Pinafore on stage in traditional operatic style Steven Heywood News staff

Actors in the Victoria Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s presentation of H.M.S. Pinafore will have to throw their voices. To be more precise, they will be projecting their voices and their stage performances to audiences at the Mary Winspear Theatre in Sidney and Victoria’s McPherson Playhouse. This is, says choreographer HeatherElayne Day, the traditional style of Gilbert and Sullivan operas — no microphones to enhance the sound. “We present Gilbert and Sullivan (operas) as traditional as possible,” she said. “Sohere are no body mikes.”

The only exception, she continued, is at the top of a threemetre poop deck where the distance between the actors and the audience requires a little sound enhancement. “The focus, then, is on the actors projecting their voices and delivering clear diction. “They have risen to the task, but it’s a skill that’s being lost.” H.M.S. Pinafore is a comic opera aboard the British ship of the same name. Captain Corcoran (played by Victoria’s Colin Grewar) intends his daughter Josephine (Victoria’s Inge Illman) to marry Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord of the Admiralty (Saanich’s Rudy Ewart). Little does he know that Josephine is in love with a lower class sailor, Ralph Rackstraw (Victoria’s Kaden Forsberg). Day said the cast is powerful and enthusiastic about learning the complex music and lyrics. She said the score is difficult to

sing but has given the theatre world some of its most about songs, such as My Gallant Crew, Good Morning and We Sail the Ocean Vlue. Day added there will be challenges with performing on two different stages. The Charlie White Theatre at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney and the McPherson Playhouse stages are different sizes and shapes. Day said they have made the set to be able to fit on both, while using the space as effectively as possible. Lighting and sound, too, are different but Day said both facilities have good technicians. Music for the performances will be provided by a full orchestra. To find out more about the Victoria Gilbert and Sullivan Society, upcoming shows, and ticket info for H.M.S. City authors among B.C.’s best Natalie North News staff

Victoria writers are among those honoured on the B.C. Book Prize shortlist, announced on Wednesday. The West Coast Book Prize Society named works by Catherine Greenwood, Robin Stevenson and Michael Layland of Victoria as the best in the province for 2013. Greenwood’s The Lost Letters (Brick Books) made the list for the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize. Stevenson’s Record Breaker (Orca Book Publishers) earned a nod for the Sheila A. Egoff Children’s Literature Prize. Layland was recognized in the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award category, for the best book in terms of public appeal, initiative, design, production, and content for his book, The Land of Heart’s Delight: Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island (TouchWood Editions). Also shortlisted for the Booksellers’ Choice is Coutenay’s Paula

Wild for The Cougar: Beautiful, Wild and Dangerous (Douglas & McIntyre). University of Victoria alumnus Arno Kopecky was also recognized in the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize category for his literary nonfiction novel, The Oil Man and the Sea: Navigating the Northern Gateway (Douglas & McIntyre). The winners in seven categories will be announced at the Lieutenant Governor’s BC Book Prizes Gala on May 3 at the Renaissance Vancouver Harbourside Hotel. These nominees – who collectively will receive $14,000 in cash prizes – will be celebrated at a free public event, the details of which have yet to be released. Information will be posted to bcbookprizes.ca, along with the list of as-yet unnamed nominees for the 2014 Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence and dates for a short-listed authors reading tour throughout various public venues in BC during the month of April.

So far, I’ve looked at econo cars at the lower end of the market. No point in me offering price details because all Euro cars are substantially more expensive than the same examples sold here in Canada. Finally, I cast a close eye over the Audi S1, which is a hot sportback version of the popular A1. It comes with a 228hp 2.0-litre turbocharged gas engine capable of hitting 100 km/h in less than six seconds. I will reveal it will sell for more than $40,000 in the UK. It’s fast, it’s a premium offering and I’ll eat my hat if it shows up here. All of the above have great fuel economy going for them and most are competitively priced. The common keys to their success likely come down to two key factors. Impressive fuel consumption numbers matter because fuel in Europe is substantially more expensive than here. And Europe is crawling with folks going about their daily duties on often far less land and road space. While there is a greater acceptance of smaller vehicles in our cities, people outside urban areas have more ground to cover and so are tempted by larger vehicles, especially as a first family vehicle. And the truth is that the advances in fuel saving technology means there’s not a massive difference between the econo-cars and small family sedans. And perhaps a bigger factor is for “an extra $20 a month, madam, you could have the roominess and utility of this car.” A line heard in most dealerships, most days. And the sales people are not wrong. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Unfortunately, Lexus didn’t refresh the inside of the cabin at all, keeping the updates to the exterior and driveline. Not to say that the inside is a disappointment, rather that some things could be tweaked. I’ll start with the positives. The cabin has plenty of room for a family of four with a big back seat and lots of legroom. The materials used are of the highest order and the RX put together well. The controller for the communications and navigation system is unique in the industry, mimicking a computer mouse. It feels very natural and the driver rarely needs to take their eyes off the road. The array of buttons and their less than logical layout could do with an update. The F-Sport comes with heated and cooled seats but it took me about five minutes to locate the switch in the centre armrest. The dial for the tuner is as far away from the driver as it could be and the seating position is very high. Drive At the heart of all RX 350 models is a very versatile 3.5L V6 engine with 270hp. 2014 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport Toyota is known for building high quality cars with fantastic resale value and has grabbed more Canadian Black Book “Best Retained Value” Awards than any other manufacturer. For buyers that are looking for a bit more performance from the RX, the F-Sport package adds visual and emotional punch. Looks Over the last several years, Lexus has taken a more aggressive design approach with its latest introductions. The front grille is more dynamic, designed to mimic a spindle used in a fabric loom. This is a tip of the hat to the origins of the Toyota Company as a textile maker. LED marker lights and a deeper chin spoiler frame the more aggressive grille. The larger 19-inch wheels come in a smoked satin finish and the suspension is tweaked for more performance. Around back, all RX 350 models come with a power rear lift gate. One of the reasons the RX is so popular is the aggressive starting price. The base model, with the same engine as this F-Sport, starts at $46,150 making it a very attractive alternative to buying a spendy German SUV. The F-Sport model is

The diminutive Fiat 500 goes big

The Fiat 500 is cute, but might not be the most practical as a family vehicle. Sure, it has room for four, a peppy personality but accessing the rear seats isn’t the easiest and the cargo room is minimal. Enter the all-new-for-2014 Fiat 500L: The “L” stands for “large” so those interior volume deficiencies listed with its pint-sized sibling are no more. Dimensionally, the L is 27 inches longer, 6 inches taller in height and in width and there’s an extra 42 per cent when it comes to inside space. But wait, there’s more. Literally. The L comes with two additional doors to allow for easy access to the rear seats. And room for five passengers. It loses a little bit of its pinch-the-cheeks cuteness but its practicality makes up for it. In the driver’s seat, you have an almost unadul-

terated outward visibility. The 500L features a segment-exclusive glass from the A- to D-pillars that provide nearly 360-degree panoramic views. Parking is easy because you can pretty much see out of all four corners. And the 500L – even with its “large” designation – still fits comfortably into urban settings. Driving the 500L, I noticed it doesn’t have quite the same amount of panache as the 500 Turbo. Granted, it’s a heavier vehicle. But to keep some of the fun behind the wheel, Fiat has outfitted it with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine that

provides 160 horsepower, 184 lb-ft. of torque. It’s also available with two transmission options. Firstly, there’s a 6-speed manual. Then there’s an available 6−Speed Euro Twin Clutch “automatic.” The latter of the two costs an additional $1,450 and came equipped on my 500L Lounge trim. The Lounge trim comes standard with leather trimmed bucket seats and front heated seats, perfect for those chilly mornings. An upgraded item that was optioned on the L was the Uconnect system with a 6.5-inch screen (the standard is a 5-inch screen) complete with Bluetooth,

wanted to keep my wife happy. She nodded sympathetically. As she handed me the money, she asked if the vehicle was in any accidents. Now, I’m not a good liar. So I simply said, No. It’s her fault for not asking for a CarProof or ICBC vehicle history report. That seemed to do it. She was pleased and drove away with a smile on her face. As for me, I went home with a fat wallet. A few days later, I got a text: “Got CarProof report. Three accidents?!?!? Need money back now!!!” I panicked. But not for long. I was getting good at this. I just got a new cell number. She didn’t know my name – that old fake ID worked great. And she had no idea where I lived. Finding me would wear her out. I was in the clear. But will I be so lucky next time? *Curber – An individual posing as a private seller, but selling vehicles for profit as a business. Confessions of a Curber I was itching to sell another car. I‘d spent my first cash quickly. The new TV looked great in my living room. So I scrounged the dealer lots in my neighbourhood. I found the perfect car at a small dealership not far from my house. Gray with four doors. Everything was still intact, but it was priced low. The dealer gave me the car’s history right away. It had been in three accidents over its lifetime. Nothing too major, but damage was done and repaired. I couldn’t spot the repairs. So, I happily bought it and registered it. I didn’t want my wife and kids to know what I was up to, so I parked it around the block. I knew it would be gone in a few days. This time, I used Kijiji and Craigslist. “Car for sale. Served me well, but wife wants a new car. Accident and damage free. Looking to sell fast, low price. Cash only. Call cell for info.” I got a text message from a woman across town. I told her I’d meet her at a nearby gas station and would throw in a free tank of gas. She was thrilled. When I met her, she told me that she needed a cheap, dependable vehicle to get to her new job. She’dd been taking the bus for weeks and was tired of her commute. To my annoyance, she wanted to check the vehicle thoroughly. So I distracted her. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I

Whether it's wandering on beaches or hillsides – even standing in a stream – Doyle and Vonna Sheffield love finding precious bits of nature to bring home to cut, grind or melt. The self-described rockhounds have been married 58 years and have shared a love of stones for most of that time. "It all started when we would go look for arrowheads together, but you can't do that anymore," Doyle says, adding the pair really began rockhounding together about 40 years ago. "It's a together hobby," Vonna adds. When scouring the beaches for new stones to pocket, "The first thing you look for is colour," she says. "We are always looking for pretty colours." The couple has a workshop at their Langford home and Doyle proudly boasts he can polish about 70 pounds of rocks at a time. "I like to polish them up and then share them with people," he says. Also in the shop are rock saws and grinders Vonna uses to cut and polish stones to be converted into jewelry. Among their favourite spots around the region, the couple wander Island View Beach looking for agates, hunt for dallasite on the beaches along and look for gold at Esquimalt Lagoon. "Gordon Beach out beyond Sooke has some gorgeous rocks," Vonna

Growing up in New Mexico, her parents were avid rockhounds. Vonna still has trays of carnelian that her folks found and passed on to her. "If you go back to that place you cannot find it anymore," she says. "I don't give these away to people – when it's gone, it's gone." In winters the couple likes to head south to New Mexico and Arizona. One of their favourite rockhounding spots is along the Colorado River, where they often find agates and jaspers. In Arizona, the Sheffields search for chalcedony, a white volcanic glass.

"Once rocks get in your blood, it's in your blood," says Vonna, holding a fossil. She has a collection of fossils that include coral, shells and even little creatures. The pair have also been gold panning for years, but these days Vonna finds it hard on her knees, so Doyle tends to search for gold solo.

The key to success, they say, is to search for quartz veins first, which can appear as a white stripe in a rock. While he enjoys the hunt, he doesn't admit to having "gold fever." "In the last 41 years, I've found about three ounces. I just do it for the pleasure of it."

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

About 100 young athletes from the Greater Victoria Minor Football Association got the jump on the 2014 season Sunday during a special pre-season skills camp at Belmont secondary. Players were put through their paces by members of the UBC Thunderbirds coaching staff, who also put on a clinic for local minor football coaches on Saturday. Also there to offer encourag-

ing words and inspiration was Hamilton Tiger-Cats centre, Tim O’Neill. He started his football career as a youth player with the Westshore Warriors before playing for the Belmont Bulldogs. Players from all five local clubs – Sooke Seahawks, Gordon Head Raiders, Saanich Wolverines, Peninsula Wildcats and Westshore Warriors – were put through myriad drills and minigames to hone their skills and prepare for the upcoming spring football season. Thunderbirds head coach,

Shawn Olsen, ensured that the pace of activities was kept fast and fun for all. At the closing ceremony, Kalen Jules, Daunte Nelson, Hunter Bowles and Jaden Martinez, all from the Warriors, were singled out by the UBC coaching staff for outstanding achievement awards. A month of practices in March will culminate with a league wide jamboree, March 29 at Esquimalt’s Bullen Park. Kids ages 8 to 14 can still join local clubs. Find more at victoriafootball.ca.

Deadline for submission: March 31, 2014. Maximum of three photos per person.

Juan de Fuca Tier 2 peewee rep team members Riely Wiens, left, Matt Grant, Connor McClelland and Zackery Whittaker prepare for B.C. AA championships at Westhills Arena.

Provincials provide test for peewees Don Descoteau News staff

If recent play is any indication, hosts Juan de Fuca Grizzlies may have some momentum heading into this weekend’s B.C. Tier 2 peewee hockey championships at Westhills Arena. An 8-4 victory over Cowichan Valley on March 2 in Chemainus highlighted improvements made by the Colwood-based squad. And while last few head-to-head games were close, “we wanted it more,” said Grizzlies forward Riely Wiens. The Grizzlies, the second-tier peewee group in Juan de Fuca Minor Hockey – its healthy registration numbers made it a Tier 1-level club for the first time this season – play against the

top teams from many smaller associations in league play. That scenario will play out again at provincials, with large Mainland clubs such as Burnaby represented by a second team, while Trail, Fort St. John and Williams Lake send their top peewees. Grizzlies team captain Connor McClelland said he’s anxious to see how his team will do against such a range of competition. “At the beginning of the season we were more selfish, trying to do it all ourselves. But as the year went on we started passing better,” agreed Matt Grant, one of a number of Grizzlies players playing in his second provincial tournament. Head coach Jim Grant estimates the Grizzlies will be competitive with “probably five

teams” in the tournament. “We’ll go out and give it our best shot whenever we step out on the ice,” he said. Player Riely Wiens said relatively few parents made the trip to last year’s provincials, and that some kids were homesick at the week-long away tournament. “I think we kind of have the advantage there (this year),” he says. The first round robin action starts Sunday (Mar. 16). Juan de Fuca plays the feature game Sunday at 8 p.m. following opening ceremonies. Teams play three games each, with the top two in each pool advancing to the championship round. The gold medal game happens Wednesday at 8 p.m. ddescoteau@vicnews.com

Q: WHAT ARE SOME POINTS TO CONSIDER ABOUT MORTGAGES? Consider a smaller mortgage, rather than the maximum you can afford – Taking a smaller mortgage can help you comfortably deal with unexpected changes to your monthly budget Evaluate the impact of an increasing interest rate on your payments – For a mortgage of $250,000 at 5%, a jump of 2% would increase monthly payments by about $300 Plan to be mortgagefree faster – Make weekly or biweekly payments, lump sum payments to your mortgage principal or increase your regular payment amount Ask for help if you have trouble making mortgage payments – If unforeseen financial circumstances impact your ability to make regular payments, seek help sooner than later – Courtesy Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation

Go with what feels like best fit for you when mortgage shopping Don Descoteau News staff

When it comes to shopping for a mortgage, low interest rates aren’t the only thing home buyers are looking for. With banks, credit unions and independent lenders all offering various ways to finance a home purchase, prospective buyers must also determine who they’ll work with to find the mortgage deal that fits them best. Not everyone is comfortable negotiating directly with their potential financier, even if they’ve dealt in past with their chartered bank, credit union or private lender. In such cases, homebuyers often use the services of a mortgage broker as a way to avoid the stress that can come with dealing with an institution that may not be able or willing to work within your financial capabilities. “It can help having somebody who’s a bit more invested in the deal and who does these sorts of things on a regular basis,” says Realtor Tim Ayres, president of the Victoria Real Estate Board. Mortgage broker Lori Lenaghan says one thing brokers can offer that financial institutions can’t always guarantee is the lowest rates, since they shop the

client’s financial situation around to various lenders to find the best fit. “People will move from one bank to another for a quarter per cent,” she says of the search period. Since they are working in the customer’s best interest, a broker tends to have more flexibility than large institutions that are bound to corporate policy, she adds. That means the client can avoid the hassle of pitting their home financial institution against another to get the best rates and terms. That flexibility can come into play in refinancing situations as well. Some lenders will extend a borrower’s amortization period to 35 years of they meet certain criteria, where others are limited to 30 years, she says. In terms of interest, homebuyers are blessed with continued low rates. Variable rate mortgages, which fluctuate with the prime rate, are still a good bet, Lenaghan says, although more conservative people still go with a fixed rate. Even those are hovering just over three per cent for a five-year term. For people who would rather approach their financial institution directly, there are some choices on the market. Ryan McKinley, senior mortgage development manager with Vancity, says

the issue of affordability in the Greater Victoria market has prompted it to get creative with how it helps buyers finance their homes. One option allows its members to work with friends, family, roommates and others to combine their resources and purchase a property together. “This is a great option for parents who may not want to gift their children a down payment, but would rather invest with them and give them a hand up,” he says. The idea of working with a mortgage specialist in advance and talking about your future plans is always

a good idea, McKinley adds. “Even if they’re not planning to purchase for some time, at the very least we can provide a road map so they’re able to achieve home ownership in the future.” Lenaghan says people are very educated about shopping for mortgages these days. “Realtors are very good at getting people in ahead of time so there’s no surprises,” she says. “Once they’re here, we can educate them about what their options are if they don’t qualify. We really work with the client over the long term.”

Walt goes to work every morning, provides for his family and chats with his neighbours. Walt has a secret. He doesn’t rob banks. He’s no Walter White from “Breaking Bad.” But, his love for quick cash and high profits drive him to a sideline that makes us all a little less safe and costs some their savings. Walt is a curber. The Vehicle Sales Authority of BC, CarProof Vehicle History Reports and ICBC are combining forces to help keep car buyers safe. Follow our series on Walt the Curber to learn how much you risk when you buy a used vehicle without proof of its history or condition. QUESTION OF THE WEEK!

Safety Tip: Spring break is a popular time of the year for a getaway. If you’re planning a long drive across the province, remember that winter tires could still be needed on certain highways. It’s also an ideal time to get a qualified mechanic to check your vehicle’s suspension and steering.

Refreshed RX350 ups the sportiness factor 2014 Lexus RX 350 F-Sport Toyota is known for building high quality cars with fantastic resale value and has grabbed more Canadian Black Book “Best Retained Value” Awards than any other manufacturer. In the Lexus line of cars and SUVs, the best seller by far is the RX 350 mid-sized SUV. Built using parts common to other Lexus and Toyota products, it represents a lot of what Toyota/Lexus is doing right. The engine is powerful but still thrifty enough for most families, the space is generous and the design is elegant. One of the

‘‘

The Lexus RX350 F-Sport offers the same interior space as a mid-sized sedan but sits higher for greater outward visibility, comes standard with allwheel drive and has a high resale value.

Inside The 2014 RX is a mid-cycle refresh of the model that was introduced in 2010. The

reasons the RX is so popular is the aggressive starting price. The base model, with the same engine as this F-Sport, starts at $46,150 making it a very attractive alternative to buying a spendy German SUV. The F-Sport model is $55,400 but comes almost fully loaded, with only two options available, the Intuitive Parking Assist and Heads up Display, which brings the price to $58,850

materials used are of the highest order and the RX put together well. The controller for the communications and navigation system is unique in the industry, mimicking a computer mouse. It feels very natural and the driver rarely needs to take their eyes off the road. The array of buttons and their less than logical layout could do with an update. The F-Sport comes with heated and cooled seats but it took me about five minutes to locate the switch in

the centre armrest. The dial for the tuner is as far away from the driver as it could be and the seating position is very high. Drive At the heart of all RX 350 models is a very versatile 3.5L V6 engine with 270hp. The F-Sport is made sportier by the inclusion of an 8-speed automatic transmission instead of the regular 6-speed unit. By adding two more gears, this new model really jumps away from a stop and pulls very well to highway speeds. Two

extra gears make a world of difference, helping to bring the engine to life and improving fuel economy. The suspension has also been modified to include sport tuned dampers and springs. I could certainly tell this RX is different, in some city conditions, the ride can be very choppy and not what typical Lexus buyers would expect. The upside is that open road driving is much more sure-footed and dynamic. When the RX is thrown off-centre the top heavy nature of the RX shows its head, the centre of gravity feels much higher than some of the other sporty models in this class. Verdict The RX350 is the best seller in the Lexus line for good reason. It offers the same interior space as a mid-sized sedan but sits higher for greater outward visibility, comes standard with all-wheel drive and has a high resale value. The RX 350 F-Sport takes all the goodness of the regular RX and makes it a bit more aggressive, especially on the acceleration front. Potential buyers would be well advised to drive both the regular model and this sportier version to see if you can live with the choppy ride, it really is dramatic. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

With the Vancouver International Auto Show just around the corner, I thought I would share my list of exciting new SUVs that are available. It’s tough to nail down just one but I am sure one of these would spark interest. 2014 Ford Explorer Sport is a performance version of its popular SUV. The headlights and taillights are blacked out to give it a sporty appearance. 20-inch painted and machined wheels allow room for the larger brakes that help it stop faster and improve performance when towing. The engine is an impressive 3.5 litre, twin turbocharged EcoBoost V6, producing a whopping 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque with a six-speed automatic transmission. To say this is quick off the line is an understatement. The Explorer also features a terrain management system that lets you select between sand, snow, mud or hill descent. – $46,999 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit equipped with a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine putting out 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque with an eight-speed transmission delivers excellent mileage while providing exceptional comfort. The diminutive Fiat 500 goes big The Fiat 500 is cute, but might not be the most practical choice as a family vehicle. Sure, it has room for four, a peppy personality (even with its base 101 horsepower engine,) but accessing the rear seats isn’t the easiest and the cargo room is minimal. It loses a little bit of its pinchthe-cheeks cuteness but its practicality makes up for it. In the driver’s seat, you have an almost unadulterated outward visibility. The 500L features a segment-exclusive glass from the A- to D-pillars that provide nearly 360-degree panoramic views. Parking is easy because you can pretty much see out of all four corners. And the 500L – even

with its “large” designation – still fits comfortably into urban settings. Driving the 500L, I noticed it doesn’t have quite the same amount of panache as the 500 Turbo. Granted, it’s a heavier vehicle. But to keep some of the fun behind the wheel, Fiat has outfitted it with a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo engine that provides 160 horsepower, 184 lb-ft. of torque. It’s also available with two trans-

mission options. Firstly, there’s a 6-speed manual. Then there’s an available 6−Speed Euro Twin Clutch “automatic.” The latter of the two costs an additional $1,450 and came equipped on my 500L Lounge trim. To be honest, this dual clutch transmission was my least favourite part of the vehicle. It felt as though the gearing was off or it had some sort of gremlin inside causing a raucous to disturb the smooth functionality of what I

would have expected. On the flip side, there’s nothing that I felt was fundamentally wrong with it. The transmission changed gears, got the car moving and did exactly what it was supposed to do. It also just felt awkward to me and unlike any other dual clutch transmission, I’ve operated. Perhaps it is one of those features I would just need to get used to over time but our time together wasn’t long enough for me to embrace

its quirks! There were, however, other highlights of the 500L. The Lounge trim comes standard with leather trimmed bucket seats and front heated seats, perfect for those chilly mornings. An upgraded item that was optioned on the L was the Uconnect system with a 6.5-inch screen (the standard is a 5-inch screen) complete with Bluetooth, Sirius satellite radio and a Beats Premium Audio System ($500.) If you’re a music lover, this is a great to add to a Fiat. Besides, I find that the Uconnect media interface is one of the most intuitive infotainment systems to work with in the industry. Electronic Stability Control (ESC,) Hill Start Assist and 4− Wheel ABS brakes are part of its DNA along with a ParkView rear back−up camera, dual zone climate controls and steering wheel mounted audio controls. When cruising along at highway speeds, road noise is kept to a minimum, which allowed me to enjoy the music via the Beats stereo system a little more. In corners, the 500L doesn’t have as tight of a setup as the 500, so don’t push it too hard since body

roll is more evident. Perhaps what really stands out about this compact car is just how much people room there is inside. I never felt cramped nor did my passengers. Not to mention the 633L (22.4 cubic feet) of storage behind the second row seats. The MSRP of the 2014 Fiat 500L Lounge is $25,995. With the options and destination, the price as tested comes to $30,850. Visit fiatcanada.com for more information. Alexandra.Straub @drivewaybc.ca

Transformative American icon good value in resale The Cadillac CTS has captured numerous awards and spearheaded a modern transformation of the iconic American luxury car maker, since 2003. The CTS (2011-13) has a very good reliability record, which helped get it a “recommended buy” rating from Consumer Reports. Other pluses include surprisingly good fuel economy numbers and attractive resale values. CTS was the first Cadillac to feature that distinctively sharp edge styling now synonymous with the brand and this was taken to another level with the 2008, second generation, redesign. By 2011, the CTS line had grown to include Sport Wagon and Coupe editions, plus “V” editions of both. The 2011 CTS-V Coupe was voted the “Best New Sports / Performance Car over $50,000” by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada. Entry-level editions of the

2011 CTS sedan came with a 3.0-litre (255 hp) V6 that’s mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Fuel economy with the 3.0L/auto powertrain is a frugal 11.3/7.2 L/100 km (city/highway). The optional 3.6 litre is a 24-valve engine with direct fuel injection that can generate 304 horsepower and fuel economy is 11.4/6.9 L/100 km – roughly the same.

The CTS all-wheel drive system runs a 30/70 frontto-rear drive split under normal conditions, to maintain a rear-drive driving dynamic. It’s also capable of delivering up to 100 per cent torque to either axle when needed and fuel, economy-wise, adds about 0.5L/100km. Moving up to a V-edition of CTS you get a 556-horsepower supercharged V8 engine (from the Corvette) that likes premium fuel and gulps it down a rate of 17.7/10.5 L/100 km (city/ highway). Aimed squarely at driving enthusiasts, the go-faster V-edition also comes with high-performance additions such as its Magnetic Ride Control system and Brembo brakes. The interior is decidedly driver-focused yet luxurious. The front passenger is protected by a unique dual-depth design of air bag that is more effective at reducing injuries in a vehicle collision. The 2011

edition of CTS also got a “Top Safety” rating from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), based on its crash testing results. An optional safety feature worth having is an adaptive forward lighting system. It includes brighter Xenon headlights that automatically move (up to 15 degrees) in the direction of intended travel for

wanted to keep my wife happy. I told her I was sad to let “my baby” go, but I

improved visibility while cornering at night. The Cadillac CTS has head-turning style and comfort in abundance, but it can also offer a level of performance like no other Cadillac. A brand new CTS sedan costs about $45,000 to $60,000 and a V-edition is over $70,000. READ MORE ONLINE bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Classic lookalikes sell at (almost) bargain prices

The Pebble Beach auctions are generally not the place for bargain hunters. It’s nothing unusual for $300 million in automotive merchandise to change hands with some lots bringing more than $10 million and a staggering 100-plus cars capable of cracking the $1 million mark. Just 20 or 30 years ago, many of these cars were attainable to people of ordinary means. So what’s an ordinary mortal whose been priced out of the Ferrari and Cobra market to do? Look at some alternatives that provide 90 percent of the bang for five per cent of the buck. Here are some of our favourites: 1963 Shelby Cobra/1992 Dodge Viper: Everybody loves a Cobra. Carroll Shelby’s idea of stuffing an American V-8 in a lightweight British sports car was an instant hit. The trouble is, if you didn’t buy one in the early 1980s when they were about $30,000, your chances of acquiring one are pretty slim for much less than $1 million. So, instead of a Cobra replica you’ll always have to make excuses for, why not buy its spiritual successor, the Dodge Viper? Early examples of this V-10 powered, raw and uncompromising car can still be had for less than what Cobras were selling for 30 years ago. 1967 Ferrari 275 GTS/4 N.A.R.T. Spider/

Triumph

Jag XKE Intermeccanica Italia: One example recently sold for around $17 million. But unknown to most people, it has an American-powered near doppelganger that costs a fraction of the price. Back in the 1960s, Canadian Frank Reisner dreamed of building Ferrari-like GT cars with American V-8 power. His Intermeccanica Italia roadster hit the mark in terms of Ferrari-like style — the bodies were even built in Italy — but in place of a complex and expensive V-12, most had smallblock Ford V-8 power, with some tuned by the famous American race shop Holman and Moody. About 400 Italias were built, and they’re not cheap (RM Auctions sold one in 2007 for $44,000). They cost a fraction of the Ferrari but have most of the looks and performance, if not the pedigree.

1965 Jaguar XKE coupe/1973 Triumph GT6: The Jaguar XKE is generally accepted as one of the prettiest cars of all time. And its great looks don’t come cheap. The first and most desirable series of the beloved XKE or E-Type now regularly brings more than $100,000. But few people know that fellow British sports car company Triumph made a three-quarter scale near replica of the E-Type, the Triumph GT6 that was also powered by a smooth and throaty straight six (albeit one that was half the size). About 10 grand buys a Triumph GT6 that many will mistake for a Jag. Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance.
