Tim Bozon’s condition improving TOWNSMAN STAFF

BARRY COULTER PHOTO

Betty Meeks (Marge Kemp) is delighted to meet a bona fide, real live, in-the-flesh foreigner for the very first time. And the meeting is made even more special by the fact that Charlie Baker (Jeff Cooper) doesn’t speak any English at all. Of course, there is more to Charlie than meets Betty’s eye — but in Cranbrook Community Theatre’s upcoming production of “The Foreigner” there is a lot more than meets the eye about a lot of people. Betty may be delighted, but Charlie’s perceived foreignness is about to land him in some pretty hostile waters. See more about the play “The Foreigner” on Page 4.

Province declares interest in continuing Columbia River Treaty

Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett has unveiled the province’s 14 principles in negotiating a renewed water management agreement with the U.S. SALLY MACDONALD

B.C. has laid its cards on the table and declared, ahead of schedule, that it wishes to continue the Columbia River Treaty that governs water management between Cana-

and one in the U.S. – Libby Dam on Koocanusa. It helps to prevent catastrophic flooding in both Canada and the U.S., and optimizes power generation along the rivers. Through the treaty, the U.S.

provides B.C. with between $100 million and $300 million each year to offset the impacts of damming the Columbia River.

While you’re not looking, this is what’s happening to BC’s world renowned recycling program.

Well, lookie here. One minute you have a perfectly good Blue Box recycling program. The next, something new and rather questionable is being put in its place. And they thought they’d get away with it right under your nose, without telling you or asking your opinion. That’s definitely not democracy in action. The BC Government, elected by us to represent our best interests, has decided to offload the costs of recycling to big multi-national corporations. To implement this new plan, they’ve set up an association that doesn’t really seem to hold the environment, local jobs, or the municipalities that run the Blue Box program, close to its heart.

Perhaps that’s why some of our local elected officials are using the word “scam” to describe how the new program is being set up. It’s also perhaps why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to jump on board. That’s gotta tell you something. Now it’s your turn to let Premier Christy Clark know what you think. Contact her today to say that dismantling an already-working recycling program to replace it with something that few people think will be as good, is a bad idea.

What’s going on here?

B.C. wants to continue with river treaty Continued from page 1 Columbia Basin Trust, a Crown corporation, was created in 1995 to support social, economic and environmental well-being in the Columbia River Basin using some of the proceeds of the treaty. The treaty doesn’t have an end date, but the U.S. and Canada have the chance to terminate the agreement on or after September 16, 2024. Either side has to give at least 10 years’ notice of the termination, meaning that both sides were reviewing the benefits and future options of the treaty ahead of the September 2014 deadline. Following extensive consultations during the two-year treaty review process, Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett, Kootenay East’s MLA, announced on Thursday, March 13, that B.C. wants to continue the treaty, and outlined 14 principles that will guide the province in negotiations

with the U.S. B.C.’s final decision concludes that both countries must recognize that for every cost associated with the treaty, there are important benefits that should be shared by both parties. “We think that we need to identify and put a value on benefits that are being received in the U.S. that currently are not accounted for in the treaty,” Bennett told the Townsman on Thursday. He said that the “dollars and cents” B.C. receives from the U.S. under the treaty no longer reflect the benefit of avoiding a major flood in the Pacific Northwest. “We have not had a major flood in the U.S. on the Columbia system since the Canadian dams were built 50 years ago. That’s a huge benefit and it’s really not accounted for in the treaty.” Other ways the treaty helps the U.S. are through spills to help

years as a result of the coordination and management of all of these dams, many of which are in Canada,” said Bennett. “We want to talk about that, we want to decide whether Canada is actually receiving the return or compensation

from providing those benefits that we should be.” He also pointed out that one of the 14 principles asks for increased control by B.C. of the Libby Dam in Montana, which is controlled by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and results in

City sends out notice to motorists regarding pothole damage claims tow nsma n Staf f

The City of Cranbrook has sent out a public notice to residents regarding pothole damage claims. “It is that time of year again when potholes begin their annual appearance on the streets of Cranbrook and become the hot topic of discussion for many residents,” the City press release read. “Potholes are weather related and can occur at any time of the year. They are normally formed following extreme weather, with the freezing and thawing of sub-surface water from rain or snow runoff that has infiltrated into the ground through surface cracks. The weakening of the pavement structure combined with heavy traffic loads eventually leads to the formation of potholes.” The City deals with a large network of streets and Public Works has a

and carried out accordingly,” said Public Works Director Joe McGowan. “In normal circumstances our crews can respond to pothole repairs in a timely manner. During extreme and

unfavourable weather conditions when pothole problems are numerous and proper repair work cannot be carried out, only temporary repairs will be made until conditions im-

prove.” To report potholes, please contact the City of Cranbrook Public Works Department at 250-489-0218. The law in British Columbia does not make a municipality legally responsible to ensure that its roads are always free of defects or hazards such as potholes and the Local Government Act, Section 288, provides that a municipality does not have the legal liability for damages that arise from a breakdown in a road. The municipality must be found to have been negligent in the particular circumstances. Motorists are advised that written notice of intent to claim must be provided to a municipality within two months of the events that give rise to the claim – per the Local Government Act, Section 286.

the rise and fall of Koocanusa reservoir, a popular East Kootenay recreational lake. “We’re the only place in B.C. that has a water body that is dammed up in the U.S. So we don’t have the same authority over that dam that B.C. has over dams in the West Kootenay. Those dams are in Canada so they can work with B.C. Hydro on their operation and coordination, whereas the Libby Dam is in the States and we don’t have as much influence there. So I’d like to change that. I’d like to improve the opportunity that we have to manage that water flow for the benefit of Lake Koocanusa.” Other principles in the decision include considerations around flood control, hydropower generation, eco-

systems and climate change, while maintaining the flexibility to adapt to evolving economic, social and environmental circumstances in each country. The U.S. State Department is yet to reveal its position on continuing the treaty, and it has until Sept. 16, 2014 to declare that. “I’m expecting that they are going to want to continue with the treaty and try to work for some benefits within the framework of the treaty, but I don’t know that until they come out and say,” said Bennett. The principles that the province outlined Thursday will allow both the U.S. and Canadians to see what B.C. will be negotiating on should the U.S. decide to continue the treaty, Bennett said.

School Board honours fellow trustee ‘Woman of the Year’ Submit ted

At Tuesday’s Board meeting, School District 5 (SD5) Board Chair Frank Lento proudly acknowledged Trustee Gail Brown for her recent Woman of the Year award, presented last week by the Canadian Federation of University Women (CFUW) Cranbrook Club. The award has been given out annually for the past 30 years, including to retired SD5 teachers, Jenny Humphrey and Sandy Zeznik. It recognizes East Kootenay region women whose work and talents contribute to the education and/or advancement of women. “Gail’s entire career has been dedicated to improving outcomes for children, for providing mothers and families with the tools and resources they need to raise happy, healthy, successful children,” said Lento. “We’re extremely fortunate to have her on our board”. Brown was gracious in accepting the recognition, pointing out that the Woman of the Year award also belongs to

countless others of equal dedication with whom she’s worked over the years. “None of these are ‘my’ projects, but rather achievements made with an idea that grew with the help of citizens of this community. I am proud to be part of this membership of men and women; a team of like-minded people to share goals in making everything a little bit better.” Brown’s contributions include the expansion and transformation of the annual Cranbrook Children’s Festival, formation of seven East Kootenay community Early Child Development committees, and her tireless and visionary work to make the Kootenay Child Development Centre (KCDC) a reality. Fellow trustee, Patricia Whalen, who was also involved in the KCDC project, said Gail was an inspiration for everyone who worked on the project. “From conception to advocacy to fundraising, Gail never waivered in her dedication or her vision for the centre.”

Going incognito as ‘The Foreigner’ Townsman Staff

T

ake one individual whose personal problems are causing him such anguish that he cannot face relating to other people. Drop him into a crowded, chatty backwoods milieu. The individual is forced to put on a mask to protect his privacy, in a setting where personal space is a rarity. The secrets of that crowd is thus revealed to the individual — “the Foreigner,” who realizes he must come out of his shell and take action. But how to do this without revealing that he has been playing a role all along? “The Foreigner,” Cranbrook Community Theatre’s examination of intolerance, acceptance and role-playing is being brought to the stage courtesy of director David Stock. This is the second time the award-winning comedy has appeared at the Studio Stage Door. “I am reprising ‘The Foreigner’ after doing it 25 years ago,” Stock said. “When I recently saw a recording of the original production from 1989, I was thinking that so many aspects of it could be improved. I realized that I had improved as a director over the years and saw so many more possibilities in what I could do with it. “I have always loved the play from the moment my aunt and uncle took me to

see it in Edmonton in 1987. It has universal themes, is well written, and is very, very funny. Fun is something we can never get enough of.” “The Foreigner” tells the story of Canadian Charlie Baker (played by Jeff Cooper), self-proclaimed “world’s dullest man” who is dragged by his Canadian Army buddy Froggy LeSueur to a remote fishing lodge in Georgia, U.S. Charlie is so distraught about having to relate to the lodge guests that Froggy concocts an outrageous scheme. To save Charlie from his shy self, Froggy introduces him as a “foreigner” who doesn’t speak or understand English. It isn’t long before Charlie’s new persona backfires and complication upon complication ensues in a series of hilarious and heartwarming revelations. Charlie is changed by his disguise and goes from “Zero” to “Hero” by the end of the play. All the characters affect Charlie and are in turn affected by him. The play ends with the ultimate good guys versus bad guys climax. “I have updated the play to the present time and yet it still has a great relevance for theatre audiences,” Stock said. “Today more than ever, there is a need for tolerance and acceptance for ‘outsiders’ that come into our community. Every year there are

a constant influx of ‘foreigners’ coming to Canada and we all have to adjust our lives and ways of looking at and dealing with them.” Stock said the play takes serious issues, such as racism and intolerance, and addresses them with comedy in a very funny way. The author of the play, Larry Shue, is also fascinated with shyness, disguise, and the hazards of language,” Stock said. In “The Foreigner” his main character, Charlie Baker, is an intensely bashful person whose life is transformed through role playing, make-believe, and communicating in strange tongues. Stock has assembled a veteran CCT cast — including some actors who’ve worked with Stock in the past. Jeff Cooper plays the lead, Charlie Baker. Joining him onstage are Jennifer Inglis and Marge Kemp, Jerrod Bondy and Sean Swinwood, Barry Coulter, and Mount Baker students Mitchell Graw and Harrison Ford. Sean Cloarac and Patrick Bondy round out the cast. “The Foreigner” is playing at the Stage Door at 11 11th Avenue South from April 3 to 5, 9 to 12, and 16 to 19. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at Lotus Books.

The secrets of valuable first editions When it comes to modern book collecting, edition is everything — with ‘first edition’ being the gold standard. A brand new copy of ‘The Great Gatsby’ can be had for either $10 (paperback) or $14 (hardcover). A first edition of this book will cost a mere $300,000. While not every first edition of every book published is valuable (130 million of them have been printed since Gutenberg), some do appreciate in worth as time goes on. Even recent authors such as J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, and John Grisham have first editions of their first books commanding high prices. Far more difficult than trying to raise the needed capital to pur-

chase a first edition ‘Gatsby’ is the unenviable task of trying to identify a first edition ‘Gatsby.’ This is because of something called “points of issue” — a fancy term for human error. Printing a book is a collaborative and complex process, and occasionally something goes wrong. In the first printing of Hemingway’s ‘The Sun Also Rises,’ it was noticed the word “stopped” on page 181 was printed as “stoppped.” This was corrected halfway through the book’s initial print run. So half of ‘The Sun Also Rises’ first editions have “stoppped” on page 181, and the other half have “stopped.” This change in “stopped” is the book’s “point of issue.” So while one may

Mike Selby have a first edition of Hemingway’s book, it is not a true first edition unless it has the misspelled “stoppped.” This particular point of issue can also be referred to as a second state, a second variant, or a second imprint. Madness. ‘The Great Gatsby’s’ point of issue is actually on the book’s dust jacket. Halfway through the printing, it was noticed

the “j” in “jay Gatsby” was lowercase. Yet instead of halting printing, a capital “J” was at first drawn over the small one. The inefficiency of this was soon replaced with a capital “J” stamp. This first edition now has three separate states: one with a small “j”, one with a hand drawn “J”, and one with a stamped “J”. If only it ended there. While printing of the dust jacket wasn’t interrupted, the printing of the book was stopped numerous times. Words were changed (“chatter” to “echolalia,” “northern” to “southern,” and “sick in tired” to “sick and tired”), creating a first edition book with four variant states, with a three variant state dust jacket. Not even Dr. Seuss is

immune to points of issue. The first edition of the 1937 classic ‘And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street’ is currently priced in the five-figure range. What could possibly have gone wrong in printing 32 pages? Just as the dust jacket was being printed, it was noticed the boy on the front of the cover had white shorts, while inside the book he is wearing blue. It is only the first edition first state (white shorts) and not the first edition second state (blue shorts) which is worth the large dollars. Typos and shorts are not the only points of issue to be found. Hemingway’s ‘Men Without Women’ had a paper change during its initial printing, causing the later first edition state to

weigh considerably more. Lew Wallace dedicated his novel ‘Ben Hur’ to “The Wife of My Youth.” Realizing this made her sound deceased, he corrected it to “The Wife of My Youth: Who Still Abides With Me.” Collectors consider the first dedication to be the “true” first edition of the book. Not all printing errors are considered points of issue. Mistakes in binding, pages inserted upside-down, or

even reversed illustrations for some reason don’t count. Collectors of modern first editions actually consider these mistakes to make the book worthless. More madness. (The titles above can be read in various editions and formats at the library for FREE.) Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at the Cranbrook Public Library

might feel safe. “Often, riding below treeline can be a safer choice in terms of avalanche danger,” explained Klassen. “But with the current warm temperatures and wet snow at low elevations, that’s not the case at this time. Riders need to be wary of avalanche terrain even near valley bottom, at least until a solid freeze occurs.” Until conditions improve, the CAC recommends travelling on small, simple, low-angle terrain with no terrain traps. Exposure to large slopes and cornices above should also be avoided whenever pos-

sible. It’s also critical that all backcountry users are equipped with essential safety equipment for avalanche terrain, Klassen said. “Everyone in the party needs an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel every day, regardless of expected conditions. And it’s equally vital that everyone is familiar with and has practiced using this equipment. If an avalanche occurs, there is no time to go for help. The critical window for finding and extricating a victim is just 10 minutes, when there is an 80 per cent chance of survival.

The odds drop dramatically after that. At just 35 minutes, there’s a less than 10 per cent chance of survival.” For more information visit the CAC website at www.avalanche. ca for forecasters’ blogs and conditions.

Does anyone go to hell?

A

lmost two years ago, I wrote a column about “Love Wins”, the book written by Rob Bell. He asks whether it is really true that God would send to hell anyone who doesn’t claim to have faith in God. He concludes that God does not withhold love from anyone, that all people are embraced within God’s love. In this way, “love wins” — truly and deeply. Many evangelical Christians were horrified by that conclusion, and excoriated Bell online. They claimed he was engaging in heresy by espousing a position many call “universalism,” which is the belief that God will ultimately redeem all people. My own position is that no one is excluded from the love of God — not in this life, and not in whatever follows this life. Everyone is loved. Period. End of story. Partly, I bring this up because this week, preachers all around the world who serve churches which follow the Revised Common Lectionary (including Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Anglicans and others) will be preparing sermons on the world’s most famous Bible verse, John 3:16. In case you don’t have it memorized, this verse — which might be summarized “Love wins!” — reads, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” Interestingly, everywhere else in the Gospel of John, the word for “world” (kosmos in Greek) describes a world that is at complete enmity with God. A typical example is this prayer by Jesus just before his crucifixion: “I have given them your

word, and the world (kosmos) has hated them because they do not belong to the world (kosmos), just as I do not belong to the world (kosmos). I am not asking you to take them out of the world (kosmos), but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world (kosmos), just as I do not belong to the world (kosmos).” (John 17:14–16) When we understand this, it gives John 3:16 a bit more punch: “For God so loved the God–hating world that he sent his only Son …” Apparently, at least acRev. Yme cording to John’s gospel, Woensdregt God really, really, really loves the world. This doesn’t, of course, by itself address the question of universalism, as the verse continues, “all who believe will not perish but have eternal life.” But the force of God’s love as John’s gospel articulates it does raise the question of why hell is so incredibly important to so many Christians? As a theological concept, “hell” is almost entirely missing from the Old Testament and surfaces as a minor concern in the New, showing up most frequently in Jesus’ parables (which, let’s not forget, regularly defy a literal reading). In contrast, topics like proper treatment of the poor, good use of money, and the imperative to care for neighbour and creation all capture most of the attention of the biblical authors. In other words, Christian faith has more to do with how we live in this world than it does with getting out of this world and receiving an eternal reward.

The threat of hell was most fully developed in the Middle Ages as a motivational system. People were told that they could avoid eternal punishment if they engaged in all kinds of supposedly pious acts, including everything from donating money to build the Sistine Chapel to enlisting in countless Crusades. But it strikes me that we attach an importance to hell today less from a fear of eternal punishment, and more because of an allure of certainty. People seem to want a clear sense of the rewards and punishments for having or lacking faith in Christ. It offers a compelling logic which seems to reduce ambiguity from the life of faith. After all, as many have argued, if you can go to heaven without believing in Christ, what’s the point of faith in the first place? So this unbiblical sense of certainty gives people a clear standard by which to judge “who’s in” and “who’s out.” Talk about seductive! But neither the Bible nor Christian faith gives us this certainty. It is not ours to possess. We follow a God who really, really, really loves the world. Even the God–hating part of it. And I, for one, choose to believe that God continues to come into the world to heal it. God is not content to let the world “go to hell in a handbasket”, or any other conveyance. God loves. After that, God continues to love. After that, God loves some more. We simply cannot limit how far God’s redemptive love can reach. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

The almost zinciferous Aurora What’s Up? JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

Jim Cameron Note: As of March 10, 2014, there are 2,449 active mineral, placer and coal mining tenures within the Regional District of the East Kootenay. “It is but fair to hope that this undertaking will prove an exception to the general rule, that a mine is not without honor except its own country, and that local men, having a reliable property that will stand up to the test of any practical examination, will not need to go to strangers for the sinews of war.” Okay, you might want to View of the town of Moyie and the St. Eugene Mine from the read through that once more No.2 Tunnel dump of the Aurora Mine but, if not, it is simply a rather melodramatic plea for money, printed in the Cranbrook Herald newspaper in 1908, and likely written by a publisher who held interests, directly or indirectly, in the affair. Specifically, it is a plea for funds for the proposed Aurora mining project. Mining projects are always in need of money, the deal being that should the mine pan out the investors will make money in return, which is great when it happens but if not, well, there’s always more hills out there. Such is the gamble of mining. Cranbrook, in many ways, was built on mining, or at least the speculative side of the enterprise. From the Wild Horse to Perry Creek and Palmer Bar, from the Sullivan Mine at Kimberley to the St. Eugene Mine at Moyie, the prospect of wealth was always winking seductively and there were always someone waiting to be seduced. at a cost of 25 cents each. Investors were hopeful because the more money raised the more digging could be done. The No. 1 tunnel went in a distance of about 180 feet near the summit of the hill. The No. 2 shaft lower down the mountainside eventually reached a distance of 450 feet into the hillside. The No.1, 50 feet above the lake, went in some 370 feet. Information was received in Sept. that “high grade ore has been struck in the lower tunnel and that the outlook for the mine never looked brighter.” The reports appear to have been premature. In December, Beale and Elwell arranged an excursion to the mine via a boat across the lake, allowing prospective investors to view the “now famous” Aurora mine workings. The fame appears to have been premature; the excursion appears to have left some investors cold. Mining continued throughout the summer of 1910, demonstrating how “cleverly means are adapted to the ends in view at every turn, but this might be expected since a considerable amount of the development has been done by practical miners who, instead of taking cash for their work, were glad to accept stock in the company.” In short, underequipped men earning no money. A final editorial plea in December, 1911, entreated “let those who have fought so long and so successfully on the deep of the great financial waters but stay, loyally, together a little longer and the mounting wave will move them shoreward soon.” It was upon that wave that the Aurora’s ship sailed in 1912 (with the exception of the years 1926-27, when it was mined once more with similar results). The remains of the mining are still plainly visible across the waters from the town of Moyie. The St. Eugene, about 1,000 yards eastward of the Aurora, produced over a million tons of silver/lead ore in a period of some 20 years and made its investors a great deal of money. The Aurora turned out less than 4,000 tons all told. As Jane Austen (though not much of a miner herself) inquired in Pride and Prejudice: “What are men to rocks and mountains?” With thanks to “Moyie Reflections: Recollections of a Kootenay Mining Town.” and Kevin Franck, GIS Analyst, Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations.

Buchy rink heads to mixed provincials TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

A Kimberley curling crew is back on the ice at provincials as they take another shot at a trip to the national championship. The mixed rink comprised of Tom and Lori Buchy and Dave and Robyn Toffolo are off to Vancouver Island where they are going up against seven other teams for the right to represent B.C. at the nationals. “It always pretty much feels the same,” said Dave Toffolo, who throws in second. “You’ve got to get off to a good start and if you can get into that ‘A’ final, that’s a big step to making the playoffs, because you get a couple of cracks at the playoffs, even if you’re not successful in that game. A good start and getting on a roll is the main goal, said Tom Buchy, who skips the rink. “You gotta get going because it’s a triple-knockout,” Buchy

said. “If you don’t get going early, and you get down in that ‘C’ event quick—it’s tough.” They’ll be going up against a few teams that have been around the block, however, some are also new to the provincial curling scene. Both Buchy and Toffolo have gone up against Wes Craig, who skips a team out of Duncan. The Kimberley curling crew beat the Craig rink a few years ago to earn the B.C. spot at the national championships in Montreal. Other familiar faces include a team skipped by Brian Gessner out of Vancouver and another team led by Steve Kopf, who curled in the 2013 Tim Hortons Breir. “There are a couple teams that we’re familiar with, but there’s also a few teams that we’re not familiar with, but it still looks like a pretty good lineup,” said Buchy.

Thunder Cats stays alive to force Game 6 with 4-2 win over Nitros TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

With Creston on the ropes, the Thunder Cats made a pushback in Game 5 on Thursday night, winning 4-2 on home ice to hold off the Nitros for at least another day. The Dynamiters still lead the series 3-2 and have a chance to close it out on home ice on Friday night at the Civic Centre in Kimberley. Tied after two periods, the Thunder Cats were able to surge ahead in the final frame, scoring twice—one with an empty net—to pick up the win. Though Kimberley has lit up both Creston goaltenders over the series, Kyle Michalovsky picked up the win with 30 saves, while Nitros netminder Tyson Brouwer turned away 28 shots in defeat. Kimberley got outshot in the first period, but responded to take

the edge in offensive chances over the following two frames. Both teams ended the contest even at 32 shots. The Thunder Cats scored the one goal of the first period, with Jesse Collins putting Creston in the lead with 3:59 left on the scoreboard.

Bryce Nielsen responded early in the second period to tie up the game, and AP player Jesse Wallace put Kimberley in the lead five minutes later. But it would not last, as Trevor Hanna knotted the game back up again for Creston late in the frame. The two teams went

to war in the final 20 minutes to gain the edge, and it was Colton St. John for the Thunder Cats who pulled his team ahead just before the halfway mark of the frame. Collins sealed it up for the T-Cats with an empty net goal with 65 seconds remaining in the game. Kimberley was scoreless in three chances with the man-advantage, while Creston was denied on both their two opportunities on the powerplay. Tyler Garcia sat for his second of a two-game suspension for accumulated checking to the head minors. He will be eligible to return on Friday night’s home game. Even if the series goes to seven games, the Thunder Cats will be missing forward Brandon Formosa for all of it, who sat for his third of a five-game suspension after an incident in Game Two.

Playoff seeding at stake as Ice wrap up regular season Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor

The Kootenay Ice have one last statement to make this season as they get set for a home and home finale with the Calgary Hitmen. Dropping the last two affairs in one-goal losses to the Oil Kings and Rebels, the Ice are trying to keep their grasp on fifth place in the Eastern Conference.. Calgary, in turn, is trying to wrest first place away from Edmonton— meaning both the Ice and the Hitmen will have something to play for when they go headto-head this weekend. Though Kootenay has the edge with a 4-11-0 record in the season series, head coach Ryan McGill said that the past doesn’t matter, especially with playoff seeding consequences on the line.

“It’s different for everybody,” said McGill. “We’re desperate to try to stay in the fifth spot and they’re desperate to try to get the number one spot. This is going to be a different animal this weekend. “This isn’t just about previous success—I think this is going to be two desperate hockey teams and obviously, we’re shorthanded and they’re not, so it’ll be a test of our character and it’ll be a test of how well we can play defensively.” Kootenay will play host for the final home game of the season on Friday. It will also be Awards Night, as the club will hand out team awards, save for the Playoff MVP, which will be handed out at the conclusion of the WHL post-season. It’s a time of year where the out-of-town

scoreboard can make a difference in the playoff seeding. Calgary was in a dogfight for first overall, until Edmonton pulled ahead to lead by a pair of points. Edmonton finishes the season with a home and home series with the Rebels.

Kootenay, in turn, is only one point ahead of the Broncos, and will need to make a statement against Calgary to keep their tenuous hold on fifth place. The Broncos can mathematically catch the Regina Pats for first

in the East Division and second place in the Conference. The Pats, with 84 points—two ahead of the Ice—would take over fifth place and bump Kootenay down to sixth. Regina will wrap up their season with a home and home series with the Wheat Kings. McGill wasn’t happy with a 1-0 loss in Edmonton, citing a lack of effort in some parts of the lineup. The 3-2 loss in Red Deer was a better game, but Rebels goaltender Patrik Bartosak stole the win with an unreal 47-save effort to hand the Ice their second defeat in as many nights. WIth four games over five days, Kootenay— which traditionally practice every day of the week—had a day off on Thursday in advance of Calgary’s game on Friday.

Canada bounced from sledge hockey semis C anadian Press

SOCHI, Russia - Declan Farmer had two goals and an assist Thursday as the United States defeated Canada 3-0 in the sledge hockey semifinals at the Sochi Paralympic Winter Games. Joshua Pauls added a goal and an assist for the U.S., while Steve Cash made 11 saves to get the shutout. The Americans will face Russia in Saturday’s gold-medal game at Shayba Arena after the hosts defeated Norway 4-0 in Thursday’s other semifinal. Corbin Watson stopped seven shots for Canada, which will play Norway for bronze on Saturday. Thursday’s result was a bitter pill to swallow

for the Canadians, who were trying to become the first country to sweep men’s, women’s and sledge hockey at an Olympic and Paralympic Games. Gold medallists in 2006, Canada was also looking to avenge a disappointing fourth-place finish on home soil in Vancouver in 2010 and was perfect through three round-robin games, outscoring the opposition 15-1. The Americans, meanwhile, will play for gold for the second straight Paralympics after winning the tournament four years ago. The U.S. was upset by Russia 2-1 in their final group game here to set up a semifinal against their bitter rivals. Canada came in hav-

ing won the 2013 world championship and world sledge hockey challenge - with both victories coming over the U.S. - but lost two of three exhibition meetings with the Americans in the leadup to the Paralympics. In other results, Toronto’s Chris Williamson and guide Nick Brush of Panorama, B.C., won Canada’s sixth alpine skiing medal of the games, claiming bronze in the visually impaired men’s slalom. Williamson finished in one minute 48.61 seconds, behind Russia’s Valerii Redkozubov (1:43.21) and Spain’s Yon Santacana-Maiztegui (1:46.82). Kimberly Joines of Rossland, B.C., was awarded the bronze

medal from Wednesday’s women’s sit-ski slalom. Joines had finished in the silver-medal position, but was bumped down a rank when Germany’s Anna Schaffelhuber successfully appealed her disqualification and won gold. It was a mixed day for Canada in wheelchair curling. Canada thrashed Slovakia 16-0 before losing 12-1 to Finland. Canada finished the round-robin in second place at 7-2 and will face China in a semifinal on Saturday.

It’s been an especially busy set of games for the defensive corps, which is missing Landon Cross and Landon Peel to injury. “They’re doing the best they can,” McGill said of his defence. “They’re doing the best they can, we’re going to need Mackenzie [Skapski] to make some saves this weekend and when we get an opportunity to bury our chances, we’re going to have to bury our chances. “It’s no different than any other time and, obviously, it’s a big weekend. We wish we weren’t in this position, but then at the same time, that’s hockey, and we have to deal with it.” NOTES: The Kelowna Rockets clinched the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy as regular season champions with a win over the Blazers on Wednesday.

Mixed curling team gunning for a shot at the national championship Continued from page 8 Toffolo agreed. “By the same token, you can’t take anybody lightly; they’re all good, they’ve all won something to get there, so you have to be solid every game,” said Toffolo. The four booked their provincial ticket after going undefeated at zone play downs in Creston at the end of February. The Buchy rink downed fellow

Kimberley curling club team skipped by Gordon Rowe, bested a team led by Rick Cutler out of Nelson, and toppled Rowe in a rematch, to clinch the Kootenay zone berth. “We played quite well there,” said Toffolo. “We really took advantage when the other team would miss. It seemed we would come up with a great shot behind one of their misses, and it really put a lot of pressure on the other team and we did score a fair amount of points because of that.”

Winnipeg centre to provide treatment for, research into kids’ concussions C anadian Press

WINNIPEG — A new program in Winnipeg will offer specialized research and treatment for kids who suffer concussions. The Pan Am Concussion Program is to be up and running by this fall and is expected to see as many as 30 children and teenagers every week. It is to be located at MTS Iceplex, a four-rink facility that hosts amateur games and tournaments as well as practic-

The program is to be led by Dr. Michael Ellis, a neurosurgeon who recently worked at Toronto Western Hospital. Organizers are promising innovative research into how concussions can be better diag-

LEXINGTON, Miss. — A coroner says a 78-year-old U.S. man has died two weeks after he woke up in a body bag at a funeral home after being mistakenly pronounced deceased. Coroner Dexter Howard says Walter Williams died at his home in Mississippi early Thursday. The cause was not released. Williams’ story went viral after he was pro-

nounced dead on Feb. 26. At Porter and Sons Funeral Home, workers were getting ready to embalm him when Williams started to move. Williams was rushed to a hospital and he was released a few days later. Doctors say a mix of medicines may have caused his vital signs to appear unresponsive. Family members also said Williams’ pacemaker may have stopped working and started again.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You might feel fussy when you wake up, but you’ll pull it together quickly. You have a lot to accomplish. Once relaxed, you could be overwhelmed with imaginative ideas that surround this weekend. Clear out as much as you can. Tonight: Let out your inner Ram. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Tap into your ingenuity in order to complete an important job. Others might anticipate that you will take the lead and organize what is necessary. This is likely to be true, as you will get more than your share of work done. Tonight: Adjust to a change of pace. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) If you have done enough at the office, you might choose to work from home or take the day off. Many people will push you very hard to get what they feel is fair. Your sense of humor will emerge when having an important discussion with a boss or parent. Tonight: At home.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) A discussion is way overdue. Your creativity will emerge during various conversations with others. Before you know it, you might revise your plans for the weekend, if not for tonight. Allow greater give-and-take between you and someone else. Tonight: Hang out. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You might be slightly off-kilter. No matter what you do, you could be found worrying about every little thing. Your finances could be a factor, but your concerns go far beyond that. Let go and relax. You can handle what you must. Tonight: Deep into conversation. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You are feeling much better than you have in a while. Fun times with others will help you relax as you make a difficult decision regarding your finances. You aren’t the only one who is feeling financial tension. Remain secure. Tonight: Do not hesitate to beam in what you want. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) You might feel tense as you

Tundra

come to an agreement with a child or new friend. Much is on your mind, and you could be having difficulty making an important decision. You are likely to feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. Tonight: Opt for something calm -- you need it! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll be taken aback by someone’s request. You might want to change directions, but you will feel limited. A meeting could prove to be more important than you realize. Listen to a friend’s solutions to a similar issue. Tonight: TGIF! Start the weekend well. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You feel the pressure of someone else’s expectations. You’ll want to discuss what you perceive to be a problematic situation before it evolves. You might be able to bypass the issue. Recognize your limits, and feel free to say “no” to any additional work. Tonight: Join friends. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could see quite a difference in how you and a friend view a difficult situation. You might

want to learn more about this person’s perspective and see how valid it is. You might be surprised by the insight you gain. Tonight: Do something you never have done before. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Make time for a conversation that could affect your routine. You might have been thinking about taking a trip in the near future. Just make sure that the other party involved is also on the same page, as misunderstandings tend to happen way too easily. Tonight: Just be your playful self. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) Examine the possibilities. You certainly don’t seem to be on the same page as a partner. This person might seem rather irritated and high-strung at the moment. Do not allow a breakdown in conversation to occur. Tonight: Let the other person make the first move. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Many years ago, I was raped. Back then, there weren’t any rape counselors. I confided in my sister but never reported it. I learned to live through it. A few years later, I was stunned to see this same man at my nephew’s college graduation party. I told my sister this was the man who had raped me. She said she had never seen “Nick” display any violent tendencies, and that she and her husband had many business dealings with him. He then showed up at her place for another party. His presence brought back all of my suppressed fears. I was frightened, cried and left, but not before I shared my experience with my two grown nephews. My sister was livid that I told her sons about the rape. I said they deserve to know who their parents’ friends are. Nick was chummy with my nephews, and it made me sick. My fears began to fade when I learned that Nick was moving out of state. My husband and I also moved away. My sister never confronted Nick about me. But when I came back to visit a few years ago, I saw pictures of her 50th birthday party, and there was Nick, seated with her family, having a great time. My sister is now 68. Looking through her Facebook page, I saw Nick in several recent photos of her with her friends. I am terribly upset that she continues to associate with this man and apparently doesn’t care how I feel. How do I work through this? I don’t want to ruin my friendship with my sister. -Still Scared Dear Still: Your sister prefers to deny that Nick raped you, because it allows her to maintain a relationship with a man with whom she has business dealings. It’s good that you have moved far enough away to limit contact. We also suggest you steer clear of her Facebook page, where you are likely to see photographs of Nick. But please know that it is never too late to get counseling. Contact RAINN (rainn.org) and ask to speak to someone. Dear Annie: Cremation seems to be getting more popular, but advisory notices from the cremation societies all say that there is at present no way of extracting DNA from cremains. I feel the funeral homes should be obligated to preserve a DNA sample, even if it is a lock of hair. Some years ago, a woman named Anna Anderson claimed, probably sincerely, that she was Grand Duchess Anastasia from the Czarist Romanov family. A DNA sample proved otherwise. She had been cremated, and no one ever would have known the truth, but fortunately, a body part from an earlier operation had been preserved. I realize that was an unusual case, but it did solve a mystery, and there may be others waiting to be solved. Perhaps people could make a provision in their will that a DNA sample be preserved. -- P.J. Dear P.J.: You are correct that DNA is destroyed during the cremation process. However, we don’t necessarily agree that the burden of extracting a DNA sample should belong to the funeral homes, and a provision in a will would be heard too late. In potential criminal cases, the police handle it. Otherwise, if someone wants their DNA preserved, they can do it on their own or notify family members to take a sample before consigning the body to the funeral home. Dear Annie: I agree with your response to “Worried” that he shouldn’t be so upset about his girlfriend’s risk-taking behavior based on her age. However, I wish you had addressed the issue of the lady’s constantly changing the meeting times. This shows a total lack of respect and consideration for her partner. This relationship will not last based on this issue alone. -- No Procrastinator Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Google has taken its all-seeing eyes on a trip that few experience: the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. The search giant partnered with the advocacy group American Rivers to showcase views of nearly 300 miles of whitewater rapids, towering red canyon walls and geologic history. The imagery captured from Lees Ferry south of Page to Pearce Ferry at Lake Mead went live Thursday.

Google project lead Karin Tuxen-Bettman says the 360-degree views also aim to educate people on water conservation. Federal officials and environmentalist have been raising alarms recently about demand outstripping supply on the river serving some 40 million people in seven Western states. Grand Canyon National Park limits the number of people who can raft the river each year. Google’s venture allows people to take the trip virtually. Google Street View now travels down the Colorado River.

Russia bans several websites critical of government ASSOCIATED PRESS

MOSCOW — Russia on Thursday banned several websites notable for their criticism of the government and a blog run by prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny as the Kremlin intensified its crackdown on independent media amid tensions over Ukraine. The government communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, said Grani.ru, Kasparov.ru and Yezhednevny Zhurnal (Daily Journal) have carried incitements to unlawful

behaviour and participation in unauthorized mass gatherings. It said the ban was requested by the Prosecutor General’s Office and Internet providers are now under instructions to implement the block. Kasparov.ru was run by opposition figure and former chess champion Garry Kasparov. Along with two other websites, it carried scathing criticism of President Vladimir Putin’s government, including its action in Ukraine, where Russian troops have taken control of the Crimean pen-

insula. On Sunday, Crimea is set to hold a referendum on joining Russia, which has been rejected by Ukraine and the West as illegitimate. Navalny’s blog also was banned Thursday over the alleged violation of the terms of the two-month house arrest that he is currently serving. The action against independent websites came a day after the owner of Lenta.ru, a leading online news outlet, fired its editor over coverage of Ukraine.

Royal editor says Princess Diana leaked royal phone directory Associated Press

LONDON — A journalist on trial in Britain’s phone hacking scandal testified Thursday that Princess Diana provided him with information on the royals, including a phone directory, as part of her feud with her estranged husband, Prince Charles. Former News of the World royal editor Clive Goodman said Diana handed over the data after her separation from Charles, when she was going through a ``very, very difficult time’’ and was looking for media support. Diana and Charles separated in 1992 and divorced four years later. She died in a Paris car

crash in 1997. Goodman said the 1992 phone directory that she sent to his newspaper office gave him numerous staff contacts and telephone numbers that were helpful in his reporting on the royal family. ``She told me she wanted me to see the scale of her husband’s staff and household, compared with others,’’ Goodman said. ``She felt she was being swamped by people close to his household. She was looking for an ally to take him on — to show there were forces that would rage against him.’’ Goodman, 56, has been linked to the

long-running phone hacking scandal since his first arrest in 2006 for suspected hacking into the voicemails of royal aides. He was briefly jailed in 2007. He is on trial now for two counts of alleged conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office, which he denies. Rupert Murdoch shut down the News of the World tabloid in 2011 after the scope of the phone hacking scandal became known. Dozens of people have been arrested in the scandal, including former top Murdoch executives, and his company has paid out millions in compensation to victims.

Labrador, pit bull-cross puppy Rocky is seen at the BC SPCA in this undated handout photo.

Dog’s appetite for adventure a little too rocky Dale Bass Kamloops This Week

Sometimes, having an appetite for adventure doesn’t go down so well. Rocky, a curious puppy, learned that lesson the hard way. Rocky’s appetite led him to emergency surgery, after the animal chowed down a stomach full of rocks and plastic. The pup is now recuperating at the Kamloops branch of the SPCA. An X-ray done before the surgery shows the 2.5 month old Labrador, pit bull-cross managed to swallow a lot more than he could manage and needed extensive surgery to survive his gastronomic gaffe.

Born on Christmas Day, Rocky was recently surrendered to the Kamloops SPCA shelter. “Rocky’s inquisitive nature led him to somehow swallow a piece of plastic that appears to be from a chair leg, as well as some rocks,’’ said SPCA branch manager Charleen Holloway. “He’s such a playful, energetic, mischievous little guy. And he’s cute as well as resilient.” The surgery and related care is estimated to cost between $1,500 and $2,500. Now in foster care while he recuperates, Rocky will take approximately six weeks to recover before he’ll need a new home.
