Pickton will each be paid $50,000 as compensation for policing failures that allowed the Port Coquitlam pig farmer to prey on vulnerable women for years. The $4.9-million deal between the provincial and federal governments and City of Vancouver provides the payments to 98 children of 67 missing or murdered women tied to Pickton

and addresses a key recommendation of the Missing Women Inquiry led by Wally Oppal. Justice Minister Suzanne Anton said the money offers a chance for victims’ families to improve their education, housing or other circumstances. She acknowledged no amount can fully repay families for the loss of their loved ones. “It’s a fair amount, it’s the right thing to do,” Anton said. “But we can’t compensate for the loss of a mother.” The agreement is expected to settle a civil lawsuit brought by 13 families of victims. Pickton was convicted in 2007 on six counts of second-degree murder and is serving a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years. He was arrested in 2002, but Oppal found better policing should have caught him years

earlier, preventing the disappearances of many Downtown Eastside sex trade workers whose DNA was later found on the Pickton farm. Oppal cited the “intergenerational impact” of Pickton’s crimes and the need to break the hold of violence on families in recommending the compensation fund for children. A SURREY MAN found guilty in 2012 of killing his ailing wife has been handed a life sentence with no parole eligibility for 25 years. Thomas Robert Elton was found guilty of the second-degree murder of Brenda Turcan (also known as Brenda Blondell), but his sentencing was delayed until this week as his defence lawyer argued a life sentence was unconstitutional because of the nature of the killing. Elton said he did not murder his wife, but helped her commit suicide. The couple married in March 2005, about 10 years after they met, and lived in an apartment in Surrey. Turcanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s body was found in the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s suite in a building near 104 Avenue and 148 Street in June 2009. During trial, Turcanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doctor testified that she was suffering from a variety of progressive illnesses, but that all her medical problems were treatable and manageable. Elton testified that he and Turcan had an

agreement that if either of them wanted to die, the other would also commit suicide. On the day Turcanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s death, Elton said he awoke at about 8 a.m. His wife was already up, sitting on a couch. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Well, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s over,â&#x20AC;? Elton recalled Turcan telling him. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had enough.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;What?â&#x20AC;? Elton said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time, right?â&#x20AC;? he said Turcan replied. Elton said those were the code words the pair agreed to use to indicate it was time for suicide. He took their dog outside and came inside

15 minutes later to find Turcan unresponsive. He found a bottle of valium in her hand and thought his wife had begun the suicide process without him. He said he then fed eight valium pills to his dog and took 23 pills himself. He wanted to make sure Turcan was dead, and that she would not come to just to find him and the dog dead, so he strangled her and then stabbed her in the chest with a bayonet. He then took an amount of methadone he thought would be

Confessions of a bad butterfly

ack in the day (not really all that long ago) I used to be quite the social butterfly. My little wings were always a flutter from one party or gathering to the next – time, bills and babysitters were not an issue. However, those days are now long gone –as are many of the friendships formed during that fun and “carefree” chapter of my life. While some have stuck around, the visits and phone calls have dwindled. I take 100 per cent of the blame. It was around six years ago – newly pregnant with my oldest daughter, Molly – that I traded in my delicate wings for some dependable stretchy pants. Sometime during this swap, I also became... dare I say it... a pretty bad friend. (Gasp). I became notorious for breaking plans at the last minute, ignoring incoming calls and zoning-out mid-conversation during a pal’s crisis. Exhausted, bloated and highly hormonal – or irrational, as my husband would tell you (in my defence I really needed a tomato, even if the roads were blanketed in snow), I began optioning for quiet evenings at home with a bag of chips, slippers and my trusty PVR’d recordings. After 6 p.m., the idea of wearing anything other than pajamas and a Scrunchy – yes, I actually still own one – just seemed like way too much Kristyl effort. “Don’t worry, I’ll have more energy and we’ll do things after the baby is born,” I told them all. Boy oh boy, was I wrong. Fast forward to half a decade later – Molly is almost five and Zoe is three-and-a-half – my illfitting wings are still collecting dust in the closet, my stretchy-pant collection has grown and I’m still bloated, hormonal and irrational at the best of times, even without a human life growing inside me. While I used to love chatting on the phone, it’s not nearly as fun with a preschooler screaming “Let me talk. Let me talk!” in the background, or having to put someone on hold mid-sentence so you can wipe a bum or bandage a bloody knee.

For the sake of salvaging my remaining friendships and my own sanity, I do attempt to squeeze into those wings from time to time. I’m pretty lucky in that I get to go out more than most moms thanks to this blogging gig and a very understanding husband. The difference is that now there’s a dark cloud that hangs overhead – a reminder of the early morning and the inevitable “I wants,” the “she hit me’s,” and the I’m bored’s” that certainly won’t take a break just because mommy is tired or suffering from “wine flu.” I’m not saying I’ve become a hermit. Actually, I’m more social than ever before. My children and I have long conversations about the meaning of life – mostly involving the characters in the film Frozen – and there are plenty of play dates on our calendar. Heck, I even still like to mingle... from the comfort of my couch, behind the safety of a screen. Coffee dates have been replaced with Facebook chats. And Twitter has become a great place to rub elbows and network without having to put on lipstick or pants. I’m great at making an effort online, even if it’s just a comment on a status, a like or a retweet. However, I know that any digital connection runs a high risk of being disconnected. I’m sure I’ve been unfollowed, unliked and forgotten in cyberspace by many fedup friends. I don’t hold it against them. Still, a good handful of pals stand by, Clark accepting our brief interaction as sporadic as it is, not taking my “indifference” personally – or so I hope. I take comfort in knowing that the old adage “at every age, there is a stage” isn’t just meant for kids, it’s for us parents, too. It may not be tomorrow or even next year, but one day when I’m not cocooning on the couch, covered in Spaghettios and a cuddly preschooler or two, I’ll be a good friend again. Maybe even a butterfly. says there are over 41,000 school teachers in the federation. Strike vote results from March 6 show that only 29,301 teachers voted, with 26,051 voting yes for strike action. This leaves 14,949 teachers, or 36.46 per cent, that seem to be happy with the way things are. The way things are is that the average teacher wage

in B.C. is $89,000 per year ($70,624 in wages, $18,000 in benefits), two weeks off at Christmas, a two-week spring break, lieu days, a pension plan that the B.C. taxpayers pay 16.13 per cent of salary into, having the months of July and August off, and a taxpayerfunded benefits plan. With the Alberta teachers’ federation’s recent four-year

On Jan. 27, 2014 I wrote to our MP, Nina Grewal of Fleetwood Port Kells. In the email I indicated how outraged I was about the number of times our community mailbox had been broken into since the fall (three times). I also indicated that as her constituent, homeowner and home-based small business owner, the impact of these break-ins go far beyond being a minor inconvenience. I asked Grewal to respond within seven business days addressing the following: 1. What has your role been in addressing this serious problem in you riding? Please cite specific examples. 2. What solution(s) do you have for small homebased business owners who depend upon reliable

mail service in your riding? 3. What plans have you formulated and presented to Parliament regarding compensation for small business owners to help offset the costs of picking up our mail at a site that is a significant distance from our home-based business? To date, I have not had the courtesy of a response from Grewal. Am I the only one who wonders what exactly Grewal is doing for the residents in her riding? Is the community mailbox issue the only issue she has chosen to ignore or is she unresponsive to other issues in Fleetwood-Port Kells? Vancouver student Aanikh Kler has been speaking to other kids about pursuing and developing their ideas in the wake of his Dragonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Den appearance, where he scored a deal with Arlene Dickinson on his ringtone app, UndrTheRadr. On Tuesday afternoon, he spoke to about 25 teens at the City of Surreyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first Teen Hackathon at City Centre Library, where students brought their laptops, tablets and smartphones to try and use open data available online to design a useful app for the city. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Part of my [public] speaking is I get to see all the amazing things cities and schools are now doing to help foster innovation and ideas,â&#x20AC;? said Kler. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think an event like this where you have people that know so much about apps and creating them can help piece the idea and the technical aspect

nine-per-cent growth in overall cargo moved in 2013, with increases in coal, grain and container shipments leading the way. Coal shipments – which have been controversial – climbed 17 per cent to 38.2 million tonnes, split between about 26 million tonnes of steelmaking coal and 12 million tonnes of thermal coal. The port’s coal shipping capacity is expected to climb with a pending expansion in North Vancouver and, potentially a new terminal at Fraser Surrey Docks that has hit strong opposition. Coal now makes up 35 per cent of port exports. Container shipments were up four per cent in 2013 to 2.83 million containers. Port Metro CEO Robin Silvester said that gain stems from more containerized grain exports and increased imports of consumer products to Canada to meet rising consumer demand. It’s close to the port’s long-term expectation of five-per-cent-a-year overall container growth that Silvester said is the basis for the proposed Ter-

minal 2 expansion at Deltaport. “The growth we’ve been expecting is coming to pass and underlining the importance of the infrastructure strategy we’ve been working on with our federal and provincial partners,” Silvester said. One of the most visible infrastructure upgrades – the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor work to build eight railway overpasses in Delta, Surrey and Langley – should be finished within a year, he said. The overpasses will reduce road congestion from trains blocking level crossings that would otherwise worsen as port traffic grows. They’ll also reduce or eliminate train whistling. Silvester said the port projects a doubling of container shipments over the next 15 years or so and up to 30 per cent growth in grain handling. He said last year’s growth of 11 million tonnes of cargo – to a record 135 million tonnes overall – was the equivalent of adding an entire medium-sized port in Metro Vancouver. He said the port supports 60,000 jobs in the Lower Mainland that earn 50 per cent more than the average wage.

Ford has been on a roll here in Canada; finishing out 2013 as the top selling brand for the fourth consecutive year. There are some very big products coming from Ford over the coming year that will make a big impact on its sales and image, and you will get a peek at some of them at the Vancouver International Auto Show. The first is the biggest introduction of any automaker this year, the allnew 2015 Ford F-150 fullsize pickup truck. The F-150 isn’t just the best selling truck in Canada for almost 50 years; it is the overall sales champ, selling more than any other nameplate. Period. Ford isn’t merely introducing an updated model. No, they went to town, developing a entirely new manufacturing process that will revolutionize the full-size truck space. The body of the next F-150 is built of an aluminum alloy material that Ford claims is 318kg lighter but stronger than the outgoing model. In addition, the frame is made of thinner, lighter and stronger hightensile steel that combined with the body, produces the weight savings. This is an industry first, and a revolutionary approach to building trucks. In addition to a lighter body, the engineers have developed two new engines to compliment the existing

3.5L EcoBoost turbocharged V6 model and 5.0L normally aspirated V8 engine. The first is a new 3.5L V6 engine, replacing the outgoing 3.7L model base engine. With a lighter truck, a smaller engine can do the work. A smaller 2.7L turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is also going to be introduced with an auto start-stop function that switches off the engine when the truck is sitting still. Official fuel economy ratings have not been released but Ford executives tell me they hope to have best in class gasoline fuel economy. Other enhancements to the F-150 include a new stepladder that integrates into the tailgate. Ford was the first to have this feature but it has been improved for 2015. The rear tailgate also has a soft-open feature that prevents the tailgate from slamming down, plus a light switch near the back of the truck to eliminate the bed with new LED lights. The second vehicle that will have a big impact of Ford, but more of an image car, is the all-new 2015 Mustang. Interestingly, about 25 percent of all Mustangs are sold here in British Columbia, so this is a big deal for us. The 2015 Mustang is now going to be sold around the world and developed as part of the “One Ford” approach to making cars they can share in every market. This means the Mustang will be sold, for the first time, with right hand drive for countries like the UK, Australia and Japan. The stance of the new Mustang is lower, wider and more muscular, with the wheels pushed out to provide better stability. The fastback has a steeper rake and a bigger trapezoidal grille has enhanced the continued from page 23

shark nose design. Initially the Mustang will be sold as a coupe and convertible with the base and GT trim, the higher performance models will come later. Inside is another cleansheet design, featuring real aluminum switches and dials, with two large gauges behind the steering wheel. The interior looks more upscale than any Mustang before. Under the hood the GT trim continues with the 5.0L V8 with improved valves and cylinders helping to pump out over 420hp. The base 3.7L V6 is also carried over but now with 300hp. The big news is the introduction of a 2.3L turbocharged EcoBoost 4-cylinder with an estimated 300hp and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. For years, the criticism has been the lack of independent rear suspension in the Mustang but this is no longer the case. A fully independent rear suspension will help get all the power down to the ground from all three engines plus provide improved handling. Ford is hoping with this new platform and available engines, this new model will provide as many thrills as any German sports model and for less money. Pricing has not been finalized but expect it to be in line with existing 2014 Mustang pricing. By Alexandra Straub While the diesel model was launched last summer, it bears a 2014 designation. Under its hood is a 2.0L turbo-diesel that packs in 151 horsepower and 264 lb.-ft torque. Yes, it has that much torque and is most impressive. According to the Chevrolet, it has a 0-96 km/h (60 mph) performance of 8.6 seconds, “which is better than the Volkswagen Jetta TDI automatic and competitive with German diesel cars that dominate the North American market.” In addition to that, it receives an estimated fuel consumption of 4.2L/100km on the highway and 7.5L/100km in the city. While the Cruze diesel had already been available in Europe, the proven engine needed to be adapted to North American emissions ratings. It comes standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and 376.6L trunk space. It has an MSRP of $24,945

plus $1,550 destination freight charge. Impala Chevrolet’s flagship sedan is all new for the 2014 model year. Released in 2013, this five-passenger vehicle can certainly hold its own in a segment whose competitors are getting stronger and stronger. Among its redeeming new features, an all-new exterior design. I think it looks great. Having had the opportunity to take it for a test drive, Chevrolet has certainly listened to their customers and in the Impala; it has given drivers a vehicle that has flair, as well as potency. Its cabin/interior also received a major overhaul and the result is pleasing to the eyes and to the touch. The 2014 Impala is offered with three engine choices, including two four-cylinder powertrains and a 3.6L V6. Output for the 3.6L V6 is rated at 305 horsepower and 264 lb.-ft. of torque (358 Nm). That is the highest horsepower output

Cory Bullock, Alix Main and Claudia Baxter achieved qualifying times at the BC Short Course AA championships in Chilliwack March 1-2. Three B.C. champions from Surrey club SGS wins seven all around medals at provincial championships in Kamloops

ships last weekend in Kamloops, accounting for three of the seven all around medals won by SGS competitors. Cerrato, 12, won his second consecutive provincial championship with a consistent performance in the Elite 4 category. He had

a first-place score on pommel horse, won silver medals on floor and high bar, won bronze on vault and parallel bars and was fourth on rings. Last year, Cerrato was first all around in the Provincial 4 group, a category that was topped this year by SGS

SGS boys placed second and third all around in the Provincial 2 group. Emanuel Gutierrez-Sandoval, 10, won the all around silver medal after placing first on floor and parallel bars, second on vault, third on high bar and fifth on pommel horse. Teammate Timofey Azhogin, 11, won the all around bronze medal with a silver on parallel bars, bronze on pommel horse and rings, and fifth on floor. Two other SGS boys also won medals in Kamloops. Spencer Principe, 14, won gold on pommel horse and was fourth all around in the Provincial 4 (13-and-over) group while Kevin Naismith, 16, won a gold medal on parallel bars in the National Open category. A pair of female gymnasts from the Surrey club won all around medals. Sarah Tobin, 11, missed first place overall by one-tenth of a point and took the silver medal in the Provincial 2 Tyro division. Tobin won gold on beam and floor, while 11 year-old teammate Eva Woodward was fifth all around with silver on bars. Alanna Jones won gold on vault and an all around bronze in Provincial 5 Open. Jones, 20, was also fourth on bars and fifth on balanced beam. In Provincial 4 Open, Jusleen Sangham 15, was fourth on beam.

A vandalized horse with a

tale to tell

South Surrey artist draws out the real story of ‘Tattoo’ for a new book by Brenda Anderson

hat began last summer as a disturbing and senseless act of destruction is looking more and more like a tale with a happy ending. The beheading and dismemberment of a fibreglass horse sculpture last July outraged many in the community, when someone took a saw to the work of public art shortly after it was placed in a Brookswood park in Langley. The $10,000 sculpture – part of the Horsing Around Langley initiative – had been painted in swirls of silver, blue, black and green and dubbed “Tattoo.” But no sooner had Tattoo been fixed in place at the park at 200 Street and 40 Avenue than someone destroyed the fiberglass sculpture, cutting it off at the hooves and removing its head. The artist, South Surrey’s Marilyn Dyer, said at the time that her disappointment was for the community at large, and not for herself, because she had taken great joy in the creative process, but park users – children in particular – had been cheated out of their enjoyment of the public artwork. After being told about the damage, Dyer, 81, and her grandchildren visited the park and searched the area for anything that had been missed when the larger pieces were collected and taken to a specialist at an autobody shop. With its legs bound and head reattached, the life-sized sculpture is back in its place in the park – albeit a little worse for wear. “It’s got its scars and bumps,” said the artist. “But that’s Tattoo’s journey. That’s his chapter in life – like all of us. “It’s a really wonderful thing to be part of.” Now the sculpture’s story is the subject of a children’s book. Titled Tattoo, the Painted Horse, the volume, aimed at children aged five to 11, is expected to be released during Brookswood Days in June. It was written by a Summerland author named Ruthie Charles, and looks at the incident from the sculpture’s viewpoint, explained Dyer. “It tells his story – he is resurrected at the end.” Charles was in Langley visiting family when she heard about the act of vandalism, explained Dyer. The story touched her and she decided it needed to be committed to print. Dyer, meanwhile, is working on the drawings that will accompany the text. Among the vibrant images, which are drawn in coloured pencil, is one that depicts the sculpture with a garland of flowers around its neck and surrounded by playful children — as the artist intended Tattoo to be. Because there is an educational component to the story, Dyer would like

I’m willing to do my bit, and Ruthie has too.” At the time the horse was destroyed, Dyer wondered publicly about the reason anyone would want to commit such a random act of destruction. “It seems that there are people who just can’t accept that there is something nice in their community.” In many ways, the horse sculpture’s destruction parallels the experience of being bullied, said the artist. “It was screwed down, it was mute and vulnerable. “For me, it’s a lesson for life – we have to watch out for the vulnerable. Bullies come in the night, and the horse couldn’t run.” Bullies aren’t going to target victims who can fight back, she pointed out. Coincidentally, Dyer spoke to the Brookswood Merchants Association about the restoration on Feb. 26 – Pink Shirt Day – which aims to put an end to bullying. Ella Little – owner of Ella’s, a clothing bou-

tique which is located across 200 Street from the park – said she reacted with disbelief when she heard about the vandalism. But she never had a moment’s doubt that the sculpture would be repaired and returned to the park, she added. “I have great faith in the community that it’s not going to happen again,” she said. “I think it was an isolated incident – not typical of people.” Alongside Brookswood Homes and the Brookswood Merchants Association, Ella’s boutique was a major sponsor of the sculpture. “Public art is important and it gets shoved aside when budgets are short, but it brings smiles to our faces,” said Little. And while Tattoo is a beautiful piece art, Little added, thanks to the upcoming book, its impact promises goes beyond making park users happy. “It is about how the horse feels neglected and abandoned. It’s a great anti-bullying message.” “(Tattoo’s story) is not finished,” she said. “It’s got a message that it’s going to carry.”

An Art Deco-style gem on Main Street Cloverdale, the Clova theatre opened in 1947, and, apart from a decade-plus where the silver screen was silent until a re-boot as the Clova Cinema in 1992, has been thrilling successive generations of movie fans. Burghardt, a Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary grad, has been operating the Clova along with a tightly-knit crew known as the Clovamily since 1996. “It has been a wonderful and joyous 17-plus years, with many memories, thanks to all of you supportive patrons,” a newsletter sent to subscribers March 10 read. “Sometime this year, the curtain will draw and the show will end for good.” The Clova Cinema building, listed on the

In buying the building, Crossridge Church agrees to make repairs and improvements as a condition of the sale of the heritage property. The next step will be to work out a Heritage Revitalization Agreement with the City of Surrey, which wants to see the Clova restored and preserved as a heritage building. The news that the lights will dim at the Clova Cinema comes despite a campaign to raise money for an expensive digital conversion that would be necessary to secure new films, which are increasingly available only on a digital format as the sun sets on the 35-mm film industry. Some $15,000 had been raised to that end. A new digital projector would have breathed new life into the cinema, but Burghardt was concerned about taking on a major liability without any long-term lease assurances.

ransportation policy development and implementation is vast, complex, and hugely expensive but so vitally important— arguably a necessity for collective survival in our urban-centric world— that any shirking of the challenge is really not an option. But in comparison with the seemingly unquestioned worthiness of and hence bottomless public purse for health and education policy development and implementation, transportation policy development and implementation and the funding for same is the subject of seemingly endless questioning, re-definition, and rethinking. Review of policy is not necessarily a ‘bad thing’ although it can become so. No matter how expeditiously undertaken, implementing transportation policy decisions is a long process. Inaction leading to paralysis does not promote economic health and collective prosperity. At the moment, the referendum Metro Vancouver citizens were facing at municipal election time this fall to decide on priorities and new revenue sources for public transit has been placed on temporary hold by the provincial government. In early February of this year, The BC Transportation Minister agreed to move the referendum date to “no later than June 30, 2015,” thereby adding a year-and-a-half more time to … here is where it starts to get murky. The idea for the referendum came from the province. It depends on there being a defined regional transportation plan with options. Presumably the plan would have come from Translink, the government-created authority

responsible for Metro Vancouver’s regional transportation network including public transport and the major roads and bridges. The region’s mayors, however, for many reasons opposed the idea of the referendum and demanded a stronger role for themselves in setting transportation priorities and in acting on behalf of their citizenry to find new sources for and control of funding. In response to the Mayors’ position, the Transportation Minister said he was prepared to legislate change to increase mayoral authority over TransLink’s long-term strategies and projects. This will involve TransLink’s board overseeing operations, budgets and plans in a manner consistent with strategies and plans put forward by the mayors. Then he set a new deadline: “We are asking the mayors’ council to define a regional expansion plan by June 30, 2014,” the Minister explained. “This will allow time for the mayors to build a clear and articulate plan, identify the costs, funding sources and, indeed, finalize the question to support a regional campaign leading to the referendum.” Obviously, identifying funding sources is a crucially important issue. If the mayors conclude that existing funding sources — the fare box and property taxes — will be sufficient, they can proceed without further approval from the province. If they decide, however, to seek a new funding source or sources, then the provincial government will require this to be approved by regional referendum. Vancouverites care about transportation issues but this ‘story’ touching as it does on so many intertwined aspects of the challenge—who defines the vision? What is the proper role for governments at all the various levels? What is the proper role for Translink? And, finally, who pays? It is tough to follow. The mayors have asked for and received an enormous challenge. Robinson, Larry Gordon 1949 - 2014 With the greatest sadness, the family announces the passing of Councillor Larry Robinson on March 15th, 2014 at Peace Arch Hospital. He passed away peacefully with his family by his side after a very courageous battle with cancer. He was a truly wonderful man, a kind and loving Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Grandfather and Step Dad and uncle. Larry was loved and respected by all who knew him. Larry was born in Regina on Feb. 9th, 1949. He was a brilliant scholar, a very talented artist, mentor, fitness instructor and health enthusiast who was often seen pole walking the hills and kayaking on our water front. He was a friend to so many. Larry worked for Air Canada in Regina and Vancouver and was indispensable in the Legal department after many years on the ramp. He will also be sadly missed by his Homelife Benchmark family. Larry loved White Rock and became a valued and respected White Rock City Councillor three years ago and loved the challenges that brought and the friendship of his peers. He was dedicated and brought professionalism to all he did. Left to mourn are his wife, Ann, his mother Margaret, father Gordon, sons Aaron (Lise), Jesse, his brothers, Garry (Ann) and Ron (Lynda) his adored grandaughter Amelia, nephews and his niece, Heather. He had so many friends here and in Regina and will be sadly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him, including his friends at his favourite coffee shop. A celebration of life will be held at White Rock Community Centre on Monday, March 24th between 1 and 3 p.m. All are welcome.

It is with our deepest sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our dear brother, uncle and friend, Rudolf Albert Blank. Rudy as he liked to be called or Rudy “Root Beer” as we kids used to affectionately call him, passed away January 18, 2014. He went peacefully after a day of doing some of his favorite things. Rudy was predeceased by his parents Herman and Emma Blank, as well as his older sisters Edeltraud and Hannelore Blank. Rudy is survived by his brothers Herman (Shirley), Heinz (Karen), Karl-Heinz (Suzan). As well are his many nieces and nephews which include Rico and Danny Mielnicki, Anthony, Rosemary, Dwayne, Nicole, Erich, Jason and Donna Blank; Carey Coutino, and Neil Wells. He also left many great nieces and nephews and one great, great nephew as well as many family abroad who will miss him dearly. Born in Germany on April 2nd 1948 he lived there until the age of nine when his parents packed up and immigrated from Germany to Canada. Landing on the east coast they boarded a train and took a trip across the Country before landing at their final destination of Vancouver B.C. Rudy always seemed to long for that feeling of adventure and when he could he did something about it. After finishing school Rudy joined the Canadian Navy and while traveling the world he managed to earn his boiler makers ticket. After his tour was over he came home and helped his brothers and parents run their family dairy farm. Besides farming Rudy tried many different career paths including working early on at Pan abode homes. Rudy also worked as a custodial engineer, a nature park caretaker, he was even a small business owner . Rudy tried a variety of careers before finding a home with his latest employer who he was with until his final days. He enjoyed his job immensely in particular his fellow workers who we found out were extremely fond of him as well. Rudy was a man of many interests and pursued anything he liked with a wonderful almost childlike wide eyed enthusiasm. That was just who he was, and so it’s no wonder kids gravitated to him like he was wearing a suit made out of candy. Rudy was someone who truly enjoyed spending time with both family and friends pursuing all kinds of interests and hobbies. Whether it was a simple game of cards, a dinner and a movie or a heated battle on the computer with his nephew Danny, Rudy went in 100% all the time. Never wanting to sit still, Rudy was always trying something new. He was a treasure hunter, a Golfer a bowler, a fisherman an amateur film maker and so many more things. Rudy was anything that let him be challenged, and his spirit of adventure and enthusiasm will be missed by all. Rudy was laid to rest beside his parents, Herman and Emma, not far from the old family farm. The entire family would like to express our deepest gratitude to all those friends and family who were able to attend Rudy’s funeral as well as those of you who shared stories and words of encouragement in our families time of need.
