Interior Health, in partnership with the BC Renal Agency (BCRA), announced March 13 that the Williams Lake Community Dialysis Unit has expanded to meet anticipated future need among Cariboo residents requiring hemodialysis. The community dialysis unit, located on the first floor of Cariboo Memorial Hospital, recently added a sixth dialysis station, providing enhanced patient access to this lifesaving measure for those whose renal needs can be met in a community dialysis setting. Funded by the BCRA and operated by Interior Health (IH), the Williams Lake Community Dialysis Unit incorporates an involved care, patient self-management model. By focusing on education, the care providers work to empower patients to become as independent as they are able to be. Patients are encouraged to set their own goals, learn new skills and gain control over their health. Dialysis is the artificial process of eliminating waste and unwanted water from the blood – a function normally carried out by the kidneys. When kidneys do not function properly, patients may need dialysis. Those on hemodialysis have this treatment three times a week at the Williams Lake unit. The BCRA contributed $25,000 to the community dialysis unit expansion, which included a renovation and facility upgrade, as well as equipment purchase and installation. IH also reallocated a dialysis unit from Kamloops to the Williams Lake unit. The community dialysis unit currently serves 10 patients per day on five hemodialysis stations. Recognizing that renal patients are at all stages of kidney function, this expansion of a sixth station allows IH to be ready when future demand requires additional service capacity.

100 Mile House bantam hockey players Kailey Lund, left, and Karlie Easton celebrated after scoring a goal against a team from Tri-Cities during Attitude on Ice 2014 at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on March 8.

A 100 Mile House Bantam girls hockey team nearly made it a comeback story. The local team, sponsored by The Royal Canadian Legion #261-100 Mile House, was one of three hosting the Attitude on Ice 2014 tournament, and they met the Mackenzie Mischiefs in the finals at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on March 9. Down 3-0 in the final frame, Karlie Easton and Sydni Poggenpohl scored goals with 7:13 and 2:21 remaining, respectively. Both goals were assisted by Kailey Lund. Coach Scott Cross says the Bantams needed “just one more goal” in the great final. He adds both coaches, including Scott Easton, were quite proud. “We were really happy with the girls’ performance on the weekend. It was a great team effort. We had players that

were pretty quiet all year step up and play excellent. And our goalie [Rachel Cross] was great all weekend.” Atom, Bantam and Midget teams from Williams Lake, Langley, Prince George, Kamloops, Tri-Cities and Chilliwack were also in town for the tournament, which started March 8. Continued on 3

Sprott Shaw students learn about mobility Free Press

Sprott Shaw College’s Health Care Assistant students practised skills and awareness on snowy sidewalks around 100 Mile House. Dezarae Walters, front left, was pushed along by Katlin Smith, while Melissa Walker, front right, was propelled by Nicki Dayman on March 7.

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) program is rolling along at the Sprott Shaw College satellite campus in 100 Mile House. Recently, the students made their way around town in wheelchairs – rotating roles as care assistant and client. Instructor Sheryl Walters says the role-playing is an important part of the course because it gives the students a good idea about mobility limitations. It not only allows them to know what it’s like to be a client and have to deal with these limitations, she says, but it also teaches them what they need to be aware of as care assistants and how to handle any problems that arise. It’s not only learning about their clients’ mobility issues, she adds, but also understanding the problems their clients have gaining access to buildings where they need services on a regular basis. Walters notes they prefer to go around the downtown core during this wheelchair session because it allows the members of the public to see the issues of mobility limitations for their elderly or disabled clients.

Atoms finish in third place From 2

The 100 Mile House Atom team finished fourth, while the local Midget team won third. “Overall, it was an exciting weekend of female hockey in 100 Mile House,” says

Midget coach Bev Fry. “The 100 Mile Midget female team played great and displayed the upmost respect for the officials, opponents and each other. They demonstrated the true meaning of heart and

Skaters have ‘blast’ at 2014 year-end exhibition

Gaven Crites Free Press

Local figure skaters performed different jumps, spins and turns for family and fans at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre recently. The 100 Mile & District Figure Skating Club’s 2014 year-end exhibition featured a variety of routines from beginners in the CanSkate program, and more advanced girls from the STARSkate program. Club president Nanci Lundquist says the event was a bonding experience for team members, and a way to show off what they learned this year. “There were quite a few people watching, which was really good. A lot of families came out. “It was a really good experience. The kids had a blast, which is all that really matters.” The show saw team manoeuvres, a team relay, a pre-CanSkate exhibition, and performances by Courtney Dolinski, Mikayla Julseth, Alyssa Lindberg, Emma Giroday, Megan Glen, Kathrin Ricketts, Jordyn Karl and Keely Pacheco.

Public meeting on food security The South Cariboo Food Security Committee is hosting a public forum at the Agri-Culture Centre in The Lodge (behind the Red Coach Inn) in 100 Mile House on March 25. “This is the first in a series of public roundtable meetings for achieving our goal,” says committee vice-chair Rita Giesbrecht. The committee wants to do a Community Food Assessment and

&

an Action Plan for the South Cariboo. Topics will include: • What is a Community Food Assessment and why can it help? • How will we proceed? There is good groundwork done, we can use the expertise of many other communities. • Identifying the gaps in Food Security. • Taking action to fill those gaps by building Continued on 8

Six figure skaters from 100 Mile House were in Penticton on Feb. 14-16 to compete in the 2014 Okanagan Region Championships, where Karl won a gold medal, and Julseth and Pacheco won silvers. Next up is a spring camp running between March 24 and April 17 at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre. We have a lot of girls coming from Williams Lake, Lundquist explains. “We’re kind of integrating the two clubs.... It’s a really good experience having a completely different set of kids out there.”

Poetry contest underway

By Kimberly VanderHorst

The South Cariboo Writers’ Guild is sponsoring a poetry contest in honour of next month’s international poetry month, and we are welcoming residents of the South Cariboo to enter. With a theme of “springtime” as inspiration, the guild hopes to see entries from a wide range of ages and experience levels. Formed as a non-profit group with the goal of supporting local literacy and creativity in our community, this is the first of many events we plan to host. We have discussed workshops for local writers, including children and teens, and many other events. Entry is free of charge, and prizes have generously been donated by the guild’s council members. The winning poem will be

published in the 100 Mile House Free Press, but there is also a gift certificate to NutHatch books, free editing services, free speecharts instructional sessions, and a performing slot at the 2014 Winter Arts and Crafts Fair (hosted annually by the 100 Mile and District Arts Society) on offer. Guild judges will also select runners-up to be published on their website. The contest closes April 18th.

Entries should be 20 lines or less, with family friendly content. Poems can be submitted online through the website at www.southcariboowriters.com, by e-mail to scwriters@hotmail. com, or by mail to P.O. Box 2034, 100 Mile House, B.C., V0K 2E0. Please include your first and last names and contact information with your entry. Kimberly VanderHorst is a member of The South Cariboo Writers’ Guild.
