TERRACE - A worker contracted as part of the crews working on BC Hydro’s Northwest Transmission Line was killed in an accident March 15. Two workers were in a man basket that was part of a 22-ton mobile crane on rubber tires at the work site about 50 km north of Terrace March 15, said WorkSafe BC spokesperson Ally Skinner-Reynolds March 17. The man basket was suspended from the crane and about 85 feet off the ground, she said. They were putting conductors in place on a tower when the accident happened.

“It looks like a worker signalled for the crane to be lowered and something happened,” said Skinner-Reynolds. “The man bucket was swung around and hit the boom and the worker was thrown out to the ground below.” There were no reports on whether anything happened to the second man in the basket, she said. WorkSafe BC is investigating to find out what happened and an engineer is at the site to do an inspection, she added. A stop work order was issued at the site, she said. The man, whose name has not been released, was an employee of McGregor Con-

Alex Budzinski, projects and public relations official for Valard, the company building the transmission line, said the company is reviewing the circumstances of the accident. “There was a fatality on a Valard project on March 15. The individual works for one of our stringing contractors, not Valard Construction,” he said. Terrace RCMP Sgt. Mike Robinson said police were called out to the accident scene. “The investigation is currently under the jurisdiction of Worksafe BC and the BC Coroner’s Service, he said.

BC Hydro vice president Greg Reimer said he was saddened by the death of the worker. “On behalf of everyone at BC Hydro, I offer my sincerest condolences to the employee’s family and co-workers. BC Hydro will work with the contractor to cooperate fully with investigation by WorkSafeBC and we will continue to offer any other support and assistance we can to the contractor and their employees,” he said in a statement released March 17. “Although there was no immediate danger to any other crews on-site, construction on the line was stopped immediately out of respect for the employee,” said Reimer.

Children of murdered, missing to receive $50,000 from gov’t VANCOUVER - Ninety-eight children of B.C.’s missing and murdered women are eligible to share $4.9 million from the Province, the Government of Canada and the City of Vancouver, pursuant to a key recommendation of the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry (MWCI). The $50,000-per-child compensation offer is intended to provide the children of the women identified in the MWCI report with an opportunity to enhance their education, housing or other circumstances as they progress with their lives. Today’s an-

nouncement follows consultation among the funding partners, legal counsel for claimants and representatives for some of the 98 children. In offering the compensation, the three funding partners are hopeful they will reach a settlement with the 13 litigants involved in an ongoing civil action related to the loss of their mothers. In Forsaken: The Report of the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry, Commissioner Wally Oppal wrote, “Given the compelling evidence that I heard

concerning the intergenerational impact of these crimes and the need to break the hold of violence on families, I recommend that the Provincial Government establish a compensation fund for the children of the victims.” The compensation fund is one more part of provincial government’s response to the MWCI recommendations, which also includes policing reforms like the recent introduction of legislation to better support police in locating vulnerable and at-risk missing persons. That legislation was introduced just this year.

KITIMAT - The Kitimat Community Humane Society is getting a bump to their annual animal control contract, to better reflect their services and the ongoing increase in labour costs that haven’t been reflected in their annual budget until now. As well, employees of the Humane Society will now be granted the ability to issue tickets and perform inspections under powers allowed in the Community Charter. From here, the Humane Society will receive a monthly deposit of $13,410 for their services. That brings their contract up from the $6,115 they were receiv-

ing prior. Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Warren Waycheshen said at the March 10 committee of the whole meeting that over nine years their contract only rose about 13 per cent, not equal to even inflation. The increase will also help them take away reliance on volunteer hours, since they get calls at any time of day to handle animal control calls. Council’s motion meanwhile will also have the District advancing funds to the society in order to help out with a levy from the Canadian Revenue Agency. Relating to when the humane society detached itself from the

SPCA organization, the CRA eventually determined after audits that they had to pay GST for their animal control services, which they hadn’t prior to the organizational change. The bill, said shelter manager Maryann Oullet, was at its start $39,600. That has since been paid down to about $15,000, she told councillors. The advancement of the money to the society is not a grant, according to the motion. The funding in this new contract includes the cost of the manager-dog control officer, a full time dog control officer and two full time shelter workers.

Residents fighting evictions from Port Edward trailer park park. “None of us feel safe there. We all feel our homes could be taken away from us because where are we going to put them? For many, moving the trailer is cost-prohibitive.” But a spokesperson for Stone Cliff Properties said the issue is not that the people living in the trailers haven’t paid rent, it’s that the owners of the trailer haven’t paid rent despite several attempts to contact them. “Under the [Manufactured Home Park Residential Tenancy] act, they are not our tenants, they are the tenants of the owners of the trailers. We can only accept rent from the registered owner of the trailer ... they have to pay the owner of the trailer, who then pays us. It has to be the owner of the trailer who pays us,” she said, noting the evictions are in the name of the trailer owner and not the person living there now. “This isn’t us trying to be mean, this is simply following the rules.”

PORT EDWARD - Residents of the trailer park in Port Edward are fighting to keep a roof over their head after the new owners served 11 eviction notices earlier this month, evictions that Stone Cliff Properties Ltd. say are needed to stay within the law. The newly-formed tenants association packed Port Edward council chambers on March 11 to air their grievances before mayor and council, alleging they have been treated unfairly by the company that bought the park late last year. “They are eviction notices based on non-payment of rent because the owner has refused to accept rent and in some cases returned it to the tenants ... every one of these evictions is being disputed. They are not going to get away with it this time,” said association president Ed Day, noting the evictions account for roughly one-third of those in the

Another concern of the tenants is rules put in place prohibiting the storage of boats, tires, unlicensed vehicles or more than two licensed vehicles around people’s trailers. “I have never read anywhere that you can’t have a boat or a trailer parked beside your trailer,” said Day. “We have a boat launch in town that is paid for by the taxpayers, but if we can’t store a boat next to our trailers then that is a bit of a slap in the face.” But Stone Cliff said the storage rules were put in place to allow for major renovations and repairs needed at the park. “Fundamentally we need them to move to allow us to do the needed repairs to the water and sewer line. Right now we can’t do that because we can’t get equipment between the trailers ... we’re trying to get the work done and simply can’t,” said the spokesperson. “It is a safety concern because we can’t do the repairs.”

Lack of info stymies probe of hate crime TERRACE -An investigation into what police have described as a hate crime involving an assault on an individual has been concluded for now. “No arrests were made. If more information is received, the investigation will be reopened,” said Terrace RCMP Constable Angela Rabut of a Dec. 3, 2013 incident in which four men attacked another man near the Suwilaawks School in the 3400 Block of Straume Ave. The man, who was walking home from work, suffered minor injuries when he was assaulted by four men wearing black balaclavas. The group approached the victim from the courtyard of Suwilaawks School on the 3400 block of Straume, said police. Two men punched the victim while two stood by and watched. The victim was

knocked to the ground but managed to get back up and escape, running out of the north side of the schoolyard then fleeing north on Sparks St. and west on Straume Ave., said police. His attackers gave up chase on Straume, said police. “Information obtained during the investigation, specifically what was said by the assailants, led police to believe this was a crime motivated by hate,” said Rabut last week. She did not reveal

the circumstances leading police to conclude the incident was a hate crime. Police had been in contact with a RCMP specialized hate crime unit on the lower mainland as part of the investigation. “They compile this information for British Columbia, which could help in identifying a suspect. NORTHWEST TRANSMISSION LINE Snowmobiler and Winter Recreation Users Public Safety Notice Snowmobilers and winter recreationalists (cross country skiers, snow shoers, etc.) should be aware that the Northwest Transmission Line (NTL) is under construction, and the NTL right-of-way remains a construction zone with restricted access. This is required to avoid safety risks associated with such things as unmarked guy lines, construction materials and other potential hazards along the right-of-way, as well as for public and worker safety as construction activities continue. It wasn’t until the second last competition that Jones broke the top 14, earning 11th place in Whistler. With one more race to go in Salt Lake City, Jones had to place in the top 12 to achieve her dream. At Salt Lake City’s competition Jones placed 11th in her first run but was disqualified after her second because of a sled malfunction, which mean she had to face off against a teammate in a head to head race in Calgary. The best of three runs would qualify for the Olympics. “After the first race, my team-

mate had beat me by 1/100th of a second,” she said. However, Jones won the second run which meant whoever won the final race was going to the Olympics. Despite the pressure, Jones ended up winning and left for the Olympics three days later. “It was a journey that was incredibly difficult. It had amazing highs and devastating lows, but overall it turned me into the person I am today,” she said. Jones said she’s thankful to her sponsor Pacific Northwest LNG for funding her trip to Prince Rupert to speak to share her story with students. “I hope they take my story to heart.”

PRINCE RUPERT - Believe in yourself and your dreams, even if no one else does. That’s the message Olympic athlete Arianne Jones injected into the minds of students after speaking in Prince Rupert and Port Edward schools. Jones was part of Canada’s Olympic Luge team, finishing 13th in the Sochi Olympic Games in February. “I had adversity to overcome. I had a big dream that nobody else believed I could accomplish,” said Jones. “I wanted to let the kids know if you have a dream believe in yourself and work hard because nobody else gets to decide if your dream is valid or not” Jones started luging when she was 12, with her Olympic dream igniting when she was a forerunner for the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. “It was such an unbelievable experience ... It lit a flame inside of me [that made me want to pursue it and compete for my country],” she said. But because luge is a gravity sport and Jones is smaller in stature and weight, her ambitions weren’t taken seriously. “When I made a statement that I was going to try to make the national team, I didn’t have support from anyone. The coaching staff were very clear to me that they didn’t believe I could do it,” Jones said. “Instead of crumbling, I decided that I was going to try and give it everything I possibly had.” Jones’ efforts paid off because she made the national team, but the coaching staff still didn’t have faith in her up until she finished the season off in the top 10 ranking. Jones has been on the national team for the three years, and had to compete for one of three spots against her counterparts for the Canadian Luge team that would compete in the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.

LNG companies start to multiply TERRACE - A relatively new company that’s the latest entrant in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sweepstakes in northwestern B.C. says it already has off-take supply agreements signed with energy groups in two major Chinese cities. But the Canada Stewart Energy Group, which would export LNG from Stewart, says it is still looking to secure supplies of natural gas and partners to build a pipeline and LNG facility itself. The company filed a gas export applica-

tion yesterday with the federal National Energy Board, saying it would first use a floating LNG terminal and then move onshore. It says its floating LNG terminal would have an annual capacity of five million tonnes a year of LNG, placing it on the smaller end of other proposed projects in the region. But the Stewart group says its landbased terminals would increase its export capability by another 25 million tonnes a year, making it one of the largest of the proposed projects.

The company still has to receive environmental and regulatory approval for any project it might propose. It says it would power its facilities by electricity taken from BC Hydro’s line into Stewart or by running its own gas-powered turbines or by a combination. The company has not yet identified the Chinese energy groups with which it has off take supply agreements.

Meanwhile, Steelhead LNG Corp., a Vancouver-based liquefied natural Gas project development company whose principals have created and led some of the world’s largest, most successful and environmentally responsible natural gas and LNG projects, today announced that former BC Attorney General Geoff Plant has joined the company as a member of its Board of Directors.

PRINCE RUPERT - The fate of a new condominium development on Graham Ave. could be decided later this month as council holds a public hearing on the rezoning of the site. Prince Rupert Living Concepts is proposing to construct a three-storey condominium at the very end of Graham Ave. that will include five two-bedroom units, six one-bedroom units and 13 covered parking stalls. Dubbing it an “aging in place design”, project manager Kevin Newton told Prince Rupert council the new housing would be for a targeted audience. “This is for people like myself who have a handicap or a mobile disability. This came about because of my desire to be somewhere more conducive to my disability,” he said, not-

ing it is also being designed for seniors who don’t want to live in a house or a home for the elderly. “People want to retire somewhere nicer than living in a home. I have nothing negative to say about Acropolis Manor, but that’s not what a lot of people are looking for ... these are high-end units developed for well-heeled users. It is for senior people who live in this town who want to stay in this town.” Newton said he expects it will take nearly a year to get all of the permitting and engineering work done, which would put the start of construction in the summer of 2015. While council set a public hearing on the rezoning for March 24, some councillors expressed their strong support for the project. “It is something we have talked about as a need in town.

Drydock plan proposed PRINCE RUPERT - Repairs on large vessels, such as tugs and the Digby Island Ferry, could soon be done on the North Coast as plans are in place to pursue the construction of a drydock facility in the community. A drydock allows large vessels to enter a confined area before the area is pumped out, leaving the vessel sitting on blocks or other supports. A letter from sent from Alec Spiller of Spiller Marine Services to municipal governments and industry stakeholders outlines the rationale for seeking such a project in the region. “Our airport and Port Simpson ferries and the present fleet of larger fish boats and tugs shows that, as a port, we desperately need this facility ... the repair and maintenance work we are seeking routinely numbers in the hundreds of thousands and sometime millions of dollars,” wrote Spiller. “The list of potential immediate customers for the services of a drydock and mechanical repair facility show the facility is warranted at the present time and will certainly grow with the expanding capabilities of our port city.” Negotiations with First Nations, investors and entrepreneurs is ongoing and Spiller said the government’s Drydock Subsidies Act would provide par-

Should the project proceed, Spiller notes it is more than just the marine service industry that would benefit. “With the above building of the 3,500 tonne drydock and the installation of a 100 tonne marine travel lift on a prime piece of Prince Rupert waterfront, it is estimated that we could have 30 to 50 skilled workers with substantial paying jobs working immediately with the capability to increase the workforce substantially as business expands,” he wrote. “With an ongoing subsidy for 35 years, the city taxes could be expected to be paid for that period of time, which would be a tremendous bonus for the property owners and the City of Prince Rupert.” Spiller Marine Services is also working with the Prince Rupert and Port Edward Economic Development Corporation on the proposal and Paul Vendittelli of the corporation said the project has its full support. “Port related developments have become the primary source of economic activity in the Prince Rupert and Port Edward area, but a sufficient level of infrastructure simply does not exist. Prince Rupert and Port Edward’s strategic positioning along B.C.’s north coast makes it ideal to provide a drydock,” he wrote.

The BC Government is proposing to ofﬂoad the province’s world-class recycling programs, run by local municipalities, to an association led by big multi-national corporations. The idea is that we’ll get a better, more efﬁcient program that costs taxpayers less.

Currently, BC homeowners only pay, on average, $35 a year for curbside recycling. Under the proposed regime, you’ll pay more. Every time you bring home a pizza, buy toilet paper,

How much more? Well, nobody’s saying.

The association isn’t guaranteeing that we’ll get a better program, or even one as good as the current Blue Box program already in place. Since the association is led by big businesses outside of BC, many of whom are not even headquartered in Canada, one could presume that proﬁts will come before environmental stewardship. They usually do. They also won’t guarantee that there won’t be any job cuts here in BC.

Here’s the only thing anyone does know: we already have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, managed locally and puts the BC environment first. So why is the BC government flipping a coin, bringing in a questionable recycling program that some of our local elected officials are already calling a “scam?”

PRINCE RUPERT - Players from the BC Lions were in Prince Rupert on Thursday to meet with students at Charles Hays and discuss issues related to violence against women. Lions fullback Rolly Lumbala and quarterback Travis Lulay spent an hour talking to a standingroom-only crowd in the common area of the school as part of the “Be More Than a Bystander” program. Lumbala said “Be More Than a Bystander” carries an important message for everyone in the province. “The program is about putting an end to violence, in particular creating awareness about violence against women ... we’re also trying to talk to the students about options they have. People see these things happen, and they can be shocking and disturbing, and not know what to do or who to talk to,” he said following the presentation. “We’re trying to promote a culture of love and respect.” Lumbala and Lulay were wrapping up a tour of the Northwest that saw them visit schools in Terrace and Kitimat as well. Lumbala said students across the region were very appreciative of the message. “It’s been great, we’ve been well received everywhere we go. This is something that touches a lot of people in every community, so we get a lot of people saying thanks,” he said, noting he is a big fan of this type of community outreach. “I love it. I always say the bigger the spotlight you have on you the more responsibility you have to go into the community and deliver a positive message ... it changes your mindset and allows you to grow.” This is the second year the BC Lions have visited Prince Rupert students, last year bringing a message about perseverance and overcoming obstacles to achieve a dream.

Chris Anderson is a Master Mariner and port planning and operations specialist. He has substantial experience in the assessment and development of many terminal facilities on the Arctic, Atlantic, and Pacific Coasts of Canada.

Northern Gateway has proposed tanker-related safety measures designed to maintain safe vessel transportation. These measures, together with lower tanker transit speeds in the coastal channels, not only reduce the risk of marine incidents, they also minimize potential adverse effects on the marine mammal environment. ACTING ON EXPERT ADVICE Northern Gateway has consulted with many of the top experts in Canada and the world, including Chris Anderson who, as a Master Mariner and seafarer, has over 50 years of experience including the development of port and terminal facilities in British Columbia’s coastal waters and internationally. Acting on the advice of a team of experts, Northern Gateway committed to a vessel transit speed range from 8 to 12 knots. Anderson says, “Reducing vessel transit speeds through a confined channel to within this range allows improved response from our escort tugs, substantially reducing the risk of a navigational incident, while maintaining safe vessel operation.”

Many other oceangoing vessels can travel at even higher speeds. Northern Gateway is committed to reducing vessel speeds by as much as half that as an added measure of prevention.” GOING EVEN FURTHER TO ENSURE MARINE SAFETY In addition to reducing tanker speeds, Northern Gateway has committed to the use of two escort tugs for every loaded tanker associated with the Project, with one tug being tethered at all times. According to Anderson, “In the event of a mechanical issue, the tethered escort tugs can take over steering and braking which greatly reduces the risk of an incident occurring. This commitment will also help protect British Columbia’s north coast.”

Battling leukemia with a smile TERRACE - A little girl diagnosed with leukemia is fighting the disease with a smile. Hailey Pettit, 6, has been at BC Children’s Hospital since January 5 for treatment of Burkitt’s Leukemia. Her mom Sherry Pettit has been by her side since they were medevaced to Vancouver the same day she was diagnosed, said her dad Ted Pettit, who tries to travel down to see her once a month and who uses a webcam to speak with her daily. The disease is very aggressive so the treatment is just as aggressive, said Ted. Hailey’s beginning her fifth round of chemotherapy, which is about one week of treatment and one week without treatment to give her body a chance to recover, he said. In spite of it all, Hailey is still “a ray of

sunshine,” said Ted. You can see that in her photos but it’s even more evident in person, he added. “When you see her face to face, she brightens up the room,” he said, adding at times she does feel sad. “Both my girls are my heroes,” he said, referring to Hailey and her older sister Kyra, 11. Hailey didn’t want anyone to shave their head for her because she didn’t want them to be uncomfortable, but Ted came up with an idea to do something for her. She likes pigtails so he decided to try to grow some for her, which also includes growing a goatee as pigtails might grow faster there and not on his head, which he shaves. The outpouring of community support has been amazing, he said.

“I don’t think I was prepared for the amount of support, the amount of love and support this town has shown, it’s completely overwhelming,” said Ted. “It’s kind of wonderful so while she’s there, she knows she’s not alone.” A Facebook page, Team Hailey, provides updates on Hailey, photos and is where anyone can post greetings to Hailey, who is expected to be in hospital for another six to eight months. In a message from Vancouver, Sherry said, “Hailey is my HERO...I am so very proud of her strength through this journey... (Willie) March 26, 1932 to March 14, 2014

Willie passed away peacefully with his family at his side after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s. Willie was born in Munich, Germany and immigrated to Canada in 1953, embarking on a new life which he found in Kitimat. He worked for Alcan until he opened his own business in 1968. His love for work and his community was evident in his success and involvement in many clubs, service organizations and the Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Inga, his three children Thom (Diana), Yvonne (Robert) and Jackie (Mark) and six grandchildren - Jessica, Samuel, Danica, Tyler, Joel and Kyle. He was full of optimism and energy and passionate about gardening. The family expresses their deepest appreciation to all the nurses and staff at Mountainview Lodge in Kitimat where he spent the last two years. His funeral was held at Christ the King Church in Kitimat.

Corrine Diane Furtado July 30, 1957-March 17, 2014 Corrine Diane Furtado, 56, passed away at home with her family by her side on the morning of March 17, 2014. She was born in Campbell River, BC on July 30, 1957 to the late Sharon Biggs and Raymond Biggs. She graduated from Caledonia High School in Terrace, BC. After high school Corrine became an operator at BC Tel. She married the love of her life, Manuel Furtado, on July 7th, 1979. Corrine is survived by her sister, Laurie Biggs (Rob), brother Glenn Biggs (Josiane) and her children Candice Prokopchuk (Mike) and Tyler Furtado (Michelle). She is also survived by her four grandchildren; Logan, Ava, Gavin and Brayden. She will missed as well by many nieces and nephews. In 1985 Corrine was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Forever the optimist, she didn’t let her disease get in her way of living life to the fullest. She enjoyed music, eagles, and trips in her convertible Volkswagen bug. Her life was rich with love and laughter. She truly lived her life for her family. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the following: Dr. Patti from UBC (pre-deceased) Dr. Smit, Dr. Baerg, Yolanda (GF Strong), Barb and Marleen and the nurses from HCN. Also, thanks to Gerri and all the wonderful home care workers that came into Corrine’s home to care for her over the years. A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, March 27th, at 4:00pm at the Maritime Heritage Centre in Campbell River, BC.

PRINCE RUPERT - The Charles Hays Rainmakers were never expected to seriously challenge for the 2014 B.C. High School Boys AAA Basketball Championships against high-powered Lower Mainland contenders. In fact, the pundits seeded them 14th. The Rainmakers, however, weren’t listening to the pundits. After a fairy-tale run, the Rainmakers ended up battling Burnaby’s St. Thomas More Collegiate Knights Saturday evening in Langley for the provincial basketball title. The Rainmakers were in the game early trailing by just two baskets, 15-11, after the first quarter but St. Thomas widened the lead taking a 31-24 advantage at the half. St. Thomas More’s stingy defence came into play in the third as Burnaby held the Prince Rupert squad to just five points in the third taking a 42-29 lead. In the fourth, again the Burnaby defence was too much for the Rainmakers as the Rupert boys fell 53-38 to pick up the silver at the provincial championship. Justin McChesney led Charles Hays’ scoring in the final with 12 points, followed by John Sampson with 11 and Perry Terrell with nine. At the end of the Cinderella run, McChesney was selected as a tournament first team all-star and Garrett Kobza was chosen as a second team all-star. The 14th-seeded Rainmakers kicked off their run on Wednesday in a game against the third-seeded Fleetwood Park Dragons of Sur-

rey.

The two teams set the tone for an exciting game early, finishing the first quarter tied at 18. The Rainmakers finished the second trailing by four by a score of 3228, but in the third, went on a 12-7 run to hold a 40-39 lead at the half. The Rainmakers completed the upset holding off the Dragons by a score of 52-51. Kobza led Rupert with 15 points, Rosendo Masocol had 12 and McChesney with 11. The Rainmakers then met sixth-seed Vernon Panthers and served early notice that the Rupert team was for real, shooting 66 per cent from three-point range to lead 22-6 at the end of the first. Vernon narrowed the gap in the second though, and trailed just 38-29 going into halftime. But the second half was all Prince Rupert as they pulled away to take the upset victory by a final score of 7157. Masocol and John Sampson led the scoring for Charles Hays with 15 points each while Kobza put away 14 points. The Rainmakers then took on the seventh-seed Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School from Courtenay. After the first half, the Rainmakers trailed 43-45. But Charles Hays came back strong in the second half of the game, only allowing Courtenay nine points throughout the period and dropped 16 for themselves to bring the score to 59-54 by the end of the third quarter. The Rainmakers shut down Courtenay the rest of the way securing their spot in the final with 73-65 victory. McChesney lead the Rainmakers’ scoring with 25 points, followed by Kobza with 19 and Sampson with 15.

KITIMAT - Fresh from their appearance at the BC Winter Games, Kitimat’s high school girls curling team went on to place third at high school curling provincials. They secured the place by defeating the up-to-then undefeated Seaquim team 4-2. Coach Laurel Degoeij said they played amazingly well. She said they played relaxed and with confidence under the belief they were actually going to lose but that worked in their favour in the end. “The curling stats I kept indicated they played three ends at 100 per cent,” she said through e-mail. “I was so proud as they curled with the skill that they had and supported each other throughout the game.”

‘Lucky loonie’ given to Terrace TERRACE - Terrace City Hall is to soon display a framed 2014 Lucky Loonie presented by the Royal Canadian Mint to note the bronze medal won by Caleb Brousseau at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Games. Lucky Loonies in a special commemorative frame are being sent to the hometowns of each of the Canadian athletes who won medals at the games. Brousseau received his bronze in the men’s super G sitting alpine skiing event. Canada finished third in gold medal standings at the paralympic games. The Canadian team earned seven gold, two silver and seven bronze medals. “Canadians were riveted by the remarkable and inspirational performances of our Paralympic athletes during a thrilling nine days of competition,” said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “Each hometown should also be extremely proud of these achievements as they supported the athletes through years of dedication and training as they realized their dreams.” Five million 2014 Lucky Loonies were produced and entered circulation on Jan. 20. Canadians are encouraged to look for the coin in their change. In what is now a legendary tale, a loonie was embedded at centre ice prior to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City to bring good luck to Canada’s gold medal-winning men’s and women’s ice hockey teams. Brousseau arrived back in Terrace late Monday night. He was greeted by family and well-wishers at the airport. He is now flying to Whistler to continue the competition circuit.
