This time of year halibut is the main target for anglers. Locals get out early at the Lighthouse, and the Hump for this chicken of the sea. Fish size has varied in many areas and where you can find rockfish and cod, there is halibut. Some anglers are fishing too deep with no luck, in the Chicken of the Sea past big fish have been caught around the herring spawn. Discovery pier will be open for another season May 1st and the concession will be open for fishing and rod rentals. Last year a 28-pound spring was taken from the pier in April. Some local lakes are producing nice catches of trout. Pick a day when the weather is not a factor, and lakes where the water is shallow then drops off. Try casting a lure from shore if you don’t have a boat. I fished Snakehead Lake with success using Chironomid flies and had caught and released a number of pan size trout. I will head to a larger body of water and will try fishing the same pattern with a Chironomid. The Oyster and Salmon River’s will have the best Steelhead fishing now until the end of April. Anglers using pink worms or egg patterns can trigger a strike. In my estimation the Salmon River has some very fishable pools and if you can drift through the spots, some nice fish can be hooked. As of April 1st, saltwater fishing licences will be available on line. If you Kerry Amos can’t get to a computer the local tackle shops will you renew or issue a new licence.

B.C. promises action on jobs for people with disabilities

Of the thousands of comments the B.C. government received during its threemonth consultation on increasing opportunities for disabled people, one of the last ones sums up the difficulty faced by job seekers. “I’m quite capable of working, and what holds me back is the discrimination of employers within the community,” wrote Michael from the Thompson Okanagan on the government’s consultation website. Like many other participants, Michael said his $906-a-month disability benefit isn’t enough to live on. WorkBC, the province’s agency for job seekers, puts its emphasis on helping applicants prepare for job interviews, rather than convincing

employers to give them a chance. In her comment, Lisa agreed, noting that employers and co-workers may see accommodation as “special treatment” for disabled people like her. That’s where Wynne Powell comes in. The recently retired CEO of London Drugs is co-chair of the “presidents group” appointed by the B.C. government to reach out to employers. Powell said his store chain has hired many disabled people, and he became accustomed to seeing sign-language interpreters and other assists at corporate events. “They may have challenges in certain areas, but I can tell you as an employer, they are the most loyal, hard-working, caring people, and they help build your trust with

The BC Government is now off-loading our recycling decisions to Toronto.

Under its new regulations, the BC Government has set up an association led by big corporations to take over the local Blue Box recycling program throughout BC. If you look closely, you’ll see that of seven board members, six are executives of Toronto-based multi-national corporations, with the seventh weighing in from Montreal. How do you like that, British Columbia? This means, unlike the current program run locally by BC municipalities, this new program will be managed not by people whose first responsibility is our local environment, but rather, their Bay St. profits. That can’t be a good thing for BC. The most perplexing thing is that we currently have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, and costs BC homeowners just

$35 a year on average. The new proposed system does not guarantee to keep our local environment as its first priority, nor does it guarantee that there won’t be job losses here in BC. It doesn’t guarantee service levels, or say anything about how big business will pass along the costs to you when you go to pick up a pizza or buy groceries. Yikes! Perhaps this is why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to sign onto the new program, calling it a “scam.” Given that, maybe it’s time you called Premier Clark to keep BC’s environmental decisions right here in BC where they belong.
