More land sales planned to fund pool Aldergrove Star

The Township of Langley is planning to sell more municipal land to help fund a new community centre, pool and ice arena in Aldergrove. If sales go as planned, The Times has been told that construction on the five-acre site of the former Aldergrove Elementary School on Fraser Highway could begin as soon as 2015. But if they don’t, the start will have to be pushed back at least another year. A report being prepared by Township staff for council has identified a number of sites that could be sold to cover the cost of the new facility. The location of the sites will not be made public until the report has been presented to council, but it’s hoped they will not generate the same kind of controversy that occurred when the Township attempted to sell off nearly

50 acres of Township-owned land in 2012 to fund the Aldergrove facility. That drew immediate opposition and produced drawn-out and oftenheated debates in council chambers. As a result, one section, McLellan Forest West, was taken off the market a few months after the sale plans were made public. The remaining forested property, the Gray Pit Lands, stayed on the market until Trinity Western University bought it for a nature reserve with the assistance of a $2.5 million donation from the family of the late Thomas Blaauw. The information about the plan to sell off more municipal land identified as surplus was released by the Township in response to a Times query on Tuesday. Township staff are also searching for other sources of money, including grants from provincial and federal governments.

Council approved spending $1 million this year on a detailed technical study of the Aldergrove project that will include a more exact cost estimate. Council also set a tentative $37.5 million budget for facility construction the year after. One of the known sites being sold to help fund the recreation centre is a proposal to develop 19 acres of land into 61 residential lots in Aldergrove. The site near 28 Avenue and 276 Street used to be a sewage treatment plant that was decommissioned in the late 1990s. Though there has been some opposition to the proposal, all but one member of council voted for the development. The overall cost of the Aldergrove rec centre took a jump in July of last year when a consultant’s report to council warned the Township of

Langley would either have to find another $15 million or start cutting features. BTY Group of Vancouver put the cost of constructing a community centre with a new three-storey aquatic centre and two-storey ice arena at $50.3 million, more than the $35.5 million “spending envelope” approved by council. Township staff have also identified another $3 million in “off-site” costs connected with upgrading roads, water and sewer connections to accommodate the new centre. The new estimates were made after council decided to build a larger pool than the four-lane, 25-metre “short course” pool recommended by staff. At the time, an “Aquatic Needs Assessment” report by another consultant said the decision to go from four to six lanes would add $600,000 to $1 million to the cost.

A 15-year-old Langley boy was arrested and charged for the stabbing that took place in an Aldergrove church parking lot on March 18. The teen, who is well known to police, was charged with assault with a weapon and aggravated assault for stabbing a 19-year-old in the back. The stabbing came after the 15-year-old is accused of breaking the victim’s car window with a crowbar. At the time, there were four friends inside the victim’s car. The victim got out of his vehicle and a confrontation resulted in the 19-year-old being stabbed, said police. Both parties have known each other for years and a tit-for-tat relationship has recently escalated into this confrontation, said police. An air ambulance landed in the nearby Parkside Elementary school grounds and took the victim to hospital. He has serious but non-life threatening injuries. The suspect fled in a vehicle but was later arrested. He has since been released from jail with a number of conditions. He makes his next court appearance on April 2.

‘Heroes’ stop truck from rolling over on senior By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star

A woman who witnessed a threevehicle pile-up on Fraser Highway is saying several bystanders leapt into action, putting their own lives at risk to save one elderly man’s truck from crashing down an embankment on Friday. According to Langley RCMP, a 77-year-old Langley man had suffered a medical event and was driving himself to hospital on Fraser Highway when he smashed his Dodge pickup into the back of a Chev pickup, which then in turn hit a GMC pickup, sending it partially down an embankment near 244 Street. The 74-year-old Langley man in the GMC truck, whose white pickup was teetering and could have gone further down the shoulder, was unconscious and bleeding from his nose from the crash, said police. Laurie Ng said she heard the bang and ran to her driveway to see what had happened, when she saw the pickup

truck with the bleeding elderly man inside. “I saw this one guy trying to prevent it from rolling and another guy at the bumper doing the same thing,” said Ng. “Then it was man after man throwing himself onto the tottering truck ... Those brave men held tight until the wounded driver could be helped from his truck.” That senior citizen did regain consciousness and Ng brought out her First Aid kit and a blanket and tended to the injured driver until paramedics arrived. That senior citizen did regain consciousness by the time police arrived. He was taken to hospital, as was the driver whose medical distress caused the three-way rear-ender, confirmed Langley RCMP. He didn’t have a valid driver’s license and was ticketed for that. Everyone is going to be OK from the crash which shut down Fraser Highway for a short time. All those who helped are heroes in Ng’s eyes.

Rash of mail theft in area Aldergrove Star

Over the last month, communities throughout Langley and the Lower Mainland have been victimized by break-ins of mailboxes. This past Monday alone, 18 mailboxes were pried open and the mail items may have been stolen. RCMP is asking the public to be particularly vigilant and report suspicious people, vehicles or activity in your neighbourhood, especially in close proximity to mailboxes. Langley RCMP Street Enforcement Unit is working closely with Canada Post Postal Inspectors and neighbouring police agencies to address the issue and identify the person(s) responsible. Superintendent Derek Cooke, Officer in Charge Langley Detachment, said, “We recognize mail theft as being a significant problem throughout the Lower Mainland. Langley’s property crime unit is fully engaged in try-

ing to apprehend the offenders. I would strongly encourage Langley residents to ensure they retrieve their mail every afternoon and not allow it to accumulate for a lengthy period of time.” RCMP offer some prevention tips to minimize the opportunities for mail theft. 248 Street overpass is now open By FRANK BUCHOLTZ Aldergrove Star

After an eight-month interval, farmers, residents and tourists can cross Highway 1 on a 248 Street overpass again. The former overpass, built when the highway was constructed in the early 1960s, was torn down as part of the widening of Highway 1 to three lanes from 232 to 264 Streets. While the widening project has been complete since October, final touches on a new overpass were just completed in recent weeks. An official opening ceremony took place Saturday morning, with Fort LangleyAldergrove MLA Rich Coleman, Langley MLA Mary Polak and Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese all taking part. One of the happiest people at the event was farmer Alf Krause, who has fields on both sides of the freeway. Instead of

Coleman said the widened freeway ensures that traffic crossing the new Port Mann Bridge does not come upon a bottleneck as slow traffic climbs the hill east of 232 Street. Polak noted that the overpass closure was timed around the summer crop season, and said the new overpass is actually opening ahead of schedule. The old one was closed last Aug. 15. Froese said the new overpass will be welcomed by residents in the area, who have had to endure lengthy detours by either the 232 or 264 Street overpasses to get from one side of the freeway to the other. The overpass opened to traffic following the ceremony, and the taking down of barriers by Jake’s Construction, the contractor for the overall project. The new overpass and highway widening project cost $24 million.

Family website launched Aldergrove Star

Langley Early Child Development Committee and Langley Middle Childhood Matters Committee have launched the LangleyChildren.com website. On March 10, Langley parents gained a new resource to support families with children from infancy to age 12, in the form of the new Langley Children website. “Parents want to know what is available to them and their children in the community,” said Bernice Way, Program Coordinator for Children and Families 0-6 at Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services. “Until now that wasn’t readily available or the information was either scattered, or buried in directories for all ages.” The website provides parents with

a directory of local Langley services, as well as a calendar of events for parents or children that are occurring across Langley. Finally, the website provides a series of links to helpful resources for parents with very young, or school-aged children. “We hope that families will find this website helpful and will spread the word about this resource to their friends and neighbours. We want Langleychildren. com to become the go-too place for families looking for resources, supports or activities in Langley,” said Karen Abrahamson, Coordinator of the Early Childhood Development Committee which partnered with the Langley Middle Childhood Matters Committee to launch the website. “Our goal is to help parents and children become better connected to the opportunities in Langley.”

Food bank, charity at odds Aldergrove Star

A non-profit society which runs a low-cost grocery store has the Friends in Need Food Bank concerned its volunteers are now collecting donations in Maple Ridge. Marian Rice alerted the food bank to the collection drive last week after she found a poster tacked to a grocery bag on her doorstep. It read: “Finally a way to help underprivileged kids in school … Greetings from Fairshare Food Services Society.” The poster asked people to fill the grocery bag with non-perishable items such as canned food, pasta, cereal and coffee. It also purported to be supporting Youth Unlimited, which is not true. Dennis Hemminger, the area director of Youth Unlimited, confirmed his organization is not associated with Fairshare. “I’m a skeptical person,” said Rice, who was annoyed to learn the donated food would be sold in Fairshare’s “low-cost grocery stores” located in Langley, Aldergrove and Nanaimo. “They shouldn’t be soliciting outside their area.” Kelly Fowler, the founder of Fairshare food service, acknowledged the society made a mistake by claiming they “support” Youth Unlimited. “We’ve got it all straightened out,” Fowler said. Fairshare intends to open a store in Maple Ridge in the next two months. According to its website, the society gives people a chance “to

FILE PHOTO

Friends in Need operations manager Chuck Griffith packs a brown bag at the food bank. enjoy quality nutrition at about 50 per cent of a regular store.” Fowler said you must be a member to purchase groceries at their stores by proving you earn less than $20,000. Membership is free. “We fill a vacancy that is one step beyond the food bank,” Fowler explained, adding there’s a growing demand for the service. Fairshare was formerly known as the Fraser Valley Grocery Resource Society but changed its name last year. Fowler is also the co-founder of the Oasis Outreach Society in

Chilliwack, which runs a similar store that re-sells donated food items at reduced prices to lowincome members. He is no longer associated with that organization. Fowler says the food in his stores is funded mostly through corporate donations but is sometimes supplemented by individual donations. “We run on zero bottom dollar,” he added. “We have churches sending us their vouchers because they get twice as much groceries than they get at a regular grocery store. Our stores are quite successful, but I call it an unfortunate success because it’s unfortunate that there are so many people in need.” Fairshare’s food drive however has annoyed the Maple Ridge’s Friends in Need Food Bank, a registered charity and member of the Food Banks Canada. But Fowler believes he is just filling a need. “Food banks do a good job but there are still limitations on what they get,” he added. Lynda Lawrence, a Friends in Need Food Bank board member, does not want residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows to be confused by Fairshare and believes their poster misrepresents details. “I don’t know where the money from the sale of their groceries goes,” said Lawrence. “And to collect food and take it out of the community that’s just wrong. They are taking food from people who really need it.” Friends in Need Food Bank does not collect or solicit donations at the door or via phone.

Medical marijuana users win reprieve By JEFF NAGEL Aldergrove Star

Medical marijuana users have won a last-minute court reprieve that allows them to keep growing their own pot at home instead of destroying it and turning to new federally licenced commercial suppliers. Federal Court Judge Michael Manson granted a temporary injunction Friday for those with a personal production licence to continue to grow medical marijuana, pending the outcome of a constitutional challenge still to be heard. Health Canada’s new regulation outlawing personal growing had been slated to take effect April 1, but the decision throws a wrench into the Conservative government’s pot reform plans. Medical marijuana users and their supporters are jubilant. “I’m very excited,” said Sandra Colasanti, a member of a coalition seeking to repeal the new rules who said she doesn’t use pot but her husband needs it. “I’ve seen a lot of people who have everything from MS to cancer to full-blown AIDS and I’ve seen people die if they don’t have access to this.” She said she’s optimistic the action launched by Abbotsford lawyer John Conroy will succeed when it goes to trial. No date has been set but it’s

Authorized home growing by medical marijuana users can continue after an injunction was granted. expected sometime this year. The federal government cited widespread problems with the current system of permitted medical marijuana users growing pot at home or having other designated growers do it for them. Colasanti said the coalition doesn’t deny there are problems with the old system, which cities say create fire risks and other safety hazards from mould to home invasions. Health Canada could have prevented such problems had it simply conducted regular inspections of permitted medical grows, she said. “Whose idea was it to have this important a program and not have mandatory inspections?” Colasanti asked. “The coalition is not saying there shouldn’t be some rules. We want rules. We have asked for rules.” Medical pot patients behind the

court action feared they’ll pay commercial producers much more than it cost to grow themselves and end up with less access to the cannabis strains that work best for them. The injunction doesn’t stop the launch of new commercial pot producers, but it throws into doubt how large their market will be if many users don’t have to immediately switch to them for their supply. Growers licensed under the old system had been ordered by Ottawa to give written notice by April 30 that they’d halted production and destroyed all leftover pot or face potential police enforcement. Some municipalities had been poised to send in inspection teams or police to root out the legal medical grow-ops they were aware of come April. But Surrey’s fire department is now shelving its plans to step in to remediate an estimated 309 buildings with medical marijuana grows within the city. “I’m disappointed,” said Surrey Fire Chief Len Garis. “I guess we just simply wait.” Garis said it’s troubling from a public safety point of view, referring to academic studies that show the grow operations are 24 times more likely to burn than a regular home. – with files from Kevin Diakiw

VICTORIA – The B.C. NDP leadership contest is officially underway, with the entry of Vancouver Island veteran John Horgan in a reluctant reprise of his 2011 run against Port Coquitlam MLA Mike Farnworth. Unfortunately for them, weekend campaign events were overshadowed by revelations of flagrant abuse of taxpayers’ money by the executive and board of the Portland Hotel Society. A pair of audits finally released last week on this network of Downtown Eastside social agencies revealed systematic looting of the $28 million a year in taxpayers’ money that has kept this supposed charity running. Alas for the NDP, local MLA Jenny Kwan not only failed to keep an eye on it, her recently separated husband was one of the executives who took part for years, and she benefited to the tune of $35,000 in luxury travel. That’s what we know about, since much of the evidence wasn’t produced for the auditors. When this Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous scheme finally came to light, Kwan hastily paid back the $35,000 and announced she’s taking an unpaid leave of absence. Her tearful claim that she believed nothing was wrong is simply not credible. She not only must have known of her husband Dan Small’s jet-set ways, she participated in at

NDP’s survival on the line

least two trips, one to Vienna and Bristol, England to do “research” and attend a poverty conference from high-end hotels. If it wants to retain any shred of credibility as it spouts misleading poverty statistics and simplistic solutions, the party must get rid of Kwan, who has two years left to max out her MLA pension. MLA pensions were a factor in the 2010 ouster of Carol James, who infuriated the old guard by trying to defuse a public backlash against a generous pay and benefits package worked out in private between the NDP and the B.C. Liberals. Kwan would later take a leading role in the caucus revolt that forced James out as leader. Long-time political watchers will see the PHS abuse as a bigger, uglier version of the Nanaimo Commonwealth Holdings Society scandal. There the siphoning off of bingo funds from charities cost Mike Harcourt his job as premier. In that case, NDP MLAs sat on the board, took their monthly cut and kept quiet. There’s more. Horgan became enraged last year at the reporter who took a tip from the B.C. Liberals to reveal the NDP was skimming constituency office budgets to pay for its own “ethnic outreach” operation in Vancouver. Horgan had rubber-stamped the plan with

a since-dismissed legislature accountant, and thought he had kept it secret after the Auditor-General blew the whistle. His willingness to assess its ethics remains in question to this day. Then there is Craig Keating, who took over as party president from Moe Sihota last year. Did he inherit the $72,000 salary negotiated by Sihota with the B.C. Federation of Labour and two of its largest unions? If so, do Horgan and Farnworth think this is appropriate? Will the party’s joined-atthe-hip relationship with government unions even be discussed in the carefully staged leadership contest that’s about to begin? Then there’s the policy shipwreck left behind by Adrian Dix. His plan to use environmental assessment as a weapon to torpedo industrial projects remains popular with the party’s urban base. Farnworth and Horgan have paid lip service to the notion that projects like the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion should be properly assessed. Meanwhile the federal NDP fights to keep stacking public hearings with preselected protesters. The party may wish to consider what would give its next B.C. leader any hope of governing. Editor: I see the article about …”more land sales planned to fund pool”. Please? Did the Council have to sell land for the Blair Pool? I don’t know. Did the Council have to sell land for the LEC? I have to pay my taxes so I have no money to bet with, but if I did, I’d say ‘probably’ not, because as I understand it the provincial government played a part in the development of the LEC project. And the artist’s rendition... do you really think that ‘rendition’ fits with the current and probably the future community ‘style’? Look at all the boo hoo hoo about the Coulter Berry building in Fort Langley and someone thinks that this design rendition ‘fits right in’ with the ‘heritage’ of Aldergrove? Did this designer do any homework on the history of Aldergrove? You have an ‘old’ school on a street with a bunch of broken down store facia and someone thinks we should be building something that you might find in downtown Vancouver. I’m not opposed to mixing the old with the new, but this in my mind is just not working. The rendition is one dimensional from the street ...where are the trees, and fencing near the sidewalk (or maybe neither will exist)? This picture doesn’t give you any idea. Why can’t the same facia of the old school be used? Why do we have to go to “star trek” for a design? Why do we need a new arena? That question was posed a long time ago. Would it not be less expensive to do an upgrade to the existing arena? They would be within blocks of each other. Maybe because I’m trying to reduce my expenses, I have to pose the question “why is it costing $1 million for a detailed technical study?” Really? How many studies have already been done? The community wants a pool and a recreation area...gym, sauna, etc. We aren’t asking for the world. We just want to have the same kind of services other areas of the Township receive, is that too much to ask for? We pay taxes too! Believe me, if you build it they will come, from all around, including Abbotsford, just a few blocks down the road. Every time I see an article about this ‘pool for Aldergrove’ I cringe, because it seems to say ‘no’. Let’s make the building ugly, start cutting features, let’s sell off more land (we need more money), it’s too expensive to give you what you want, so that after a time it could and may come down to “sorry folks, it’s just too much, it ain’t gonna happen”. Yup, Aldergrove Cinderella? D. Atkinson, Aldergrove

Beautiful suggestions Editor: On the subject of “beautifying downtown Aldergrove” I have a couple more suggestions for business owners. While I don’t mind participating in Aldergrove clean up every year as a volunteer, it would help Aldergrove’s “look” if business owners could swipe their portion of the sidewalk on a regular basis (like when people have thrown their garbage). In Europe, there are a number of countries where business owners do just that. It shows that they care and it is a nice invitation to enter their shop. How much does a pot with geraniums (easy to care) cost? You only have to water on a regular basis and bring it inside in the evening, outside in the morning; it does not cost much, but certainly would send a message to shoppers. And lastly, why are there no bylaws to force owners of vacant lots to clean up their properties? Can anyone answer that? Annie Richard, Aldergrove

Lack of sensitivity here Editor: Are some people that insensitive to other species’ lives that they would drive over a dead animal? What is wrong with these people’s thinking and attitudes? An animal which appears to be a rabbit was hit early Thursday morning before 8:30 a.m., and has been flattened by repeated motorists driving over his or her dead body. Would this occur if the dead body was someone’s cat? This occurred within half a block of Willoughby Elementary on 80th avenue, a site notorious for callous driving behavior. Are some people so uncaring or arrogant, or both, to believe that humans are the only species on earth who values their lives? It’s springtime and wildlife activity will increase. Please drive with caution, particularly at dawn and dusk when wildlife may be crossing roads in developing and rural areas. Patricia Tallman, Willoughby

Women hear about Afghan challenges Aldergrove Star

An advocate for women and girls in Afghanistan was the special guest speaker at an International Women’s Day lunch Saturday at Newlands. Lauryn Oates has been passionate about women’s rights there since 1996, when she first learned how the Taliban was treating women. She converted her passion into action by setting up a chapter of Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAfghan) in Vancouver, and is currently projects director for the organization. “Girls were banned from school. Women couldn’t work outside the home and weren’t allowed to even leave their homes without a male relative. The rules effectively meant that women and girls were no longer human beings,” Oates said. She first went to Afghanistan in 2003, after the Taliban was overthrown, following the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on the United States by Al-Qaeda. She told the more than 200 people at the event, sponsored by the Langley Central Rotary Club, that Afghanistan is “a place of extremes.” In some areas, a fairly high number of girls are getting an education, but in others, literacy is minimal, child mortality is high and vaccination levels are very low.

Kwantlen First Nation Chief Marilyn Gabriel, Ingeborg Violet and Christina Bucholtz (represented by her mother Bonnie) were honoured Saturday at an International Women’s Day lunch at Newlands Golf and Country Club, organized by Langley Central Rotary Club. “Educating mothers is the single biggest factor in improving the whole situation,” she said. “The best prediction of a state’s peacefulness is how women are treated.” Oates is a big advocate of literacy, and not just learning to read, but making reading an enjoyable everyday habit. “The human right to read is the key that opens the lock,” she said “Literacy allows women to

become independent.” She told the crowd that the “human rights of others far away from us are entwined with us here. In our comfort here in Canada, we have sometimes forgotten that rights were not given, they were taken. There is no excuse for treating people differently, even when you are told to mind your own business.” Three local women of distinction were honoured at the event.

Marilyn Gabriel is hereditary chief of the Kwantlen First Nation, and in her almost 20 years of leadership has helped the First Nation regain its traditional name, expand its cultural and educational programs and enter into a number of business activities. It has good relations with other levels of government, and Gabriel has empowered the people of her community. Ingeborg Violet is a member of the Langley Central club, and with her late husband Claude, started Domaine de Chaberton Winery in South Langley — the first winery in the Fraser Valley and the first of many wineries to come to the area. Since they sold the winery in 2005, after operating it for more than 20 years, she has been an active community volunteer, raising funds for Langley Memorial Hospital and other causes. Christina Bucholtz, 23, began The People’s Foundation of Sierra Leone to empower young people in the west African country which endured a 12-year civil war. The foundation is involved in health education, encourages mentoring and provides university scholarships. She is there at present, as a volunteer teacher. Her award was accepted on her behalf by her mother Bonnie.

NDP takes aim at recycling ‘failure’ By JEFF NAGEL Aldergrove Star

The NDP is accusing the provincial government of handing over control of B.C.’s blue box recycling system to Torontobased multinational executives who will be unaccountable while B.C. businesses and households pay higher costs. Opposition small business critic Lana Popham raised the issue of Multi Material BC in the Legislature Monday, calling on the province to change course before the agency’s new system for recycling packaging and printed paper takes effect May 19. “If government doesn’t take a step back, B.C.’s recycling system is going to end up in a giant dumpster,” Popham said. “The control of recycling should never have been outsourced to the large corporate interests based in Ontario and abroad. This is a profound failure. This program needs to be paused and the entire concept reconsidered.”

Popham’s comments follow the launch earlier this month of a campaign against MMBC by a coalition of business groups, including the newspaper industry, who say they can’t afford to pay high fees imposed under the new system. “The Liberal government loves to claim they’re getting rid of red tape,” she said in an interview Monday. “So it’s quite ironic because MMBC is a Godzillasized red tape monster.” Although MMBC is registered as a society, Popham called it a “dummy corporation” because two of its three directors are Toronto-based senior executives with Loblaws and Unilever, while the third is MMBC managing director Allan Langdon. The Saanich South NDP MLA said the province should force MMBC to give B.C. stakeholders majority control. Popham said the MMBC system will be “dangerously close to monopoly” resulting in less competititon and innovation in recycling. She also said munici-

palities have been pressured into signing contracts with inadequate compensation for their costs, the threat of penalties for contamination and a gag clause. MMBC’s new recycling fees on businesses will be passed along to consumers through higher prices, Popham said, calling it a “hidden tax” that won’t be transparent to consumers. Meanwhile, she says cities are unlikely to rebate property taxes that households already pay for recycling. “The slogan for MMBC should probably be ‘Recycle once, but pay twice.’” In some cities where MMBC won’t provide services, such as Kamloops, residents will pay for nothing, Popham added. MMBC says it will take new types of containers and packaging not collected in B.C. before. But Popham noted glass will no longer be collected curbside in many cities and there’s little evidence the system will improve recycling rates overall. She said a smarter approach

would have been to extend the beverage can deposit-refund system to more containers, such as milk cartons and laundry detergent jugs. Liberal MLA Eric Foster (Vernon Monashee) responded in the Legislature, saying the province made changes to exempt most businesses from MMBC fees and paperwork if they earn less than $1 million in revenue, generate less than one tonne per year of packaging, or operate as a single outlet. “We’ve got all kinds of validation on this — chambers of commerce, local government, opportunities for local government to either continue the way they’re doing it or to have MMBC put their contractors in there to pick up,” said Foster, who serves on the government’s environment and land use committee. “MMBC came forward as an opportunity to change people’s way of doing business and to put the onus on the original producers of the waste product or the recyclable product to reduce.”

Under its new regulations, the BC Government has set up an association led by big corporations to take over the local Blue Box recycling program throughout BC. If you look closely, you’ll see that of seven board members, six are executives of Toronto-based multi-national corporations, with the seventh weighing in from Montreal. How do you like that, British Columbia? This means, unlike the current program run locally by BC municipalities, this new program will be managed not by people whose first responsibility is our local environment, but rather, their Bay St. profits. That can’t be a good thing for BC. The most perplexing thing is that we currently have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, and costs BC homeowners just

$35 a year on average. The new proposed system does not guarantee to keep our local environment as its first priority, nor does it guarantee that there won’t be job losses here in BC. It doesn’t guarantee service levels, or say anything about how big business will pass along the costs to you when you go to pick up a pizza or buy groceries. Yikes! Perhaps this is why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to sign onto the new program, calling it a “scam.” Given that, maybe it’s time you called Premier Clark to keep BC’s environmental decisions right here in BC where they belong.

Accessible fishing now at Derby Reach Aldergrove Star

As a paralympic athlete, Doug Blessin has no problem casting his line quite a distance into the Fraser River in search of hungry fish. He does, however, face a unique challenge that other bar anglers don’t. “Because of my upper body strength, I can cast farther than most people,” notes Blessin, who uses a wheelchair. “But a lot of fishing on the Fraser is catch-andrelease. I can’t be tossing a fish 100 metres back into the water. I need to be able to return the fish properly and gently.” Soon, Blessin – and other anglers with reduced mobility – will be able to access a unique fishing opportunity at Edgewater Bar in Derby Reach Regional Park in Langley. With support from Metro Vancouver, Port Metro Vancouver, local businesses and volunteers, a universally accessible bar fishing ramp has been constructed – the first in the region. Using concrete barriers and gravel, crews are creating a graduated ramp from the river bank, over riprap (placed rock protection) to a gravel platform at the river’s edge. The project – first proposed by members of the Derby Reach Brae Island Park Association – has moved forward quickly, thanks to supplies, materials and ser-

Kodiaks defeat Sockeyes, 3-2, in game 3 By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

The Aldergrove Kodiaks are back in the game after defeating Richmond Sockeyes 3-2 in game three of the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s championship. The game, Sunday, March 23 at Richmond Arena, was Aldergrove’s first win of the series, after falling 7-1 and 6-4 in the first two games of the best-of-seven series. With the two teams evenly matched up on their first lines it was the night for Aldergrove’s second and third lines to shine. Scoring for the Kodiaks were Spencer Unger and Spencer McHaffie with two unanswered goals in the first period, and another goal by McHaffie in the second. Assists were by Adam Callegari, Kodi Schwarz, Scott McHaffie (2) and Jeremy Lagler. Sockeyes’ Daniel Oakley scored in the second and Jacob Wozney scored in the final frame on a power play.

The Kodiaks outshot the Sockeyes 38-35, but were unable to score on the three power plays while the Sockeyes scored on one of two. Twins Spencer and Scott McHaffie were the first and second stars of the night, respectively, while the Sockeye’s Wozney earned third star. The two teams are back in Aldergrove Arena Wednesday night for game four, and Richmond the next night for game five. Games six and seven (if needed) will be at Aldergrove Arena on Saturday and Richmond on Monday. Sockeyes stun Kodiaks in game two The Aldergrove Kodiaks found itself down two games to none in the PJHL championship series after the Richmond Sockeyes scored five unanswered goals to defeat the Kodiaks 6-4 in game two. It was played at Richmond’s Minoru Arena on March 20. Aldergrove looked to be in

good shape in game two after Scott McHaffie made it a 4-1 game 4:55 into the second period. But Cole Plotnikoff and Liam Lawson struck to make it 4-3 and then Plotnikoff and John Wesley scored in the third to give Richmond its first lead. Ayden MacDonald scored into the empty net to round out the scoring. The first period saw McHaffie and Cameron Davitt put Aldergrove ahead 2-0 before Daniel Oakley got the Sockeyes on the board. Aaron Marker then made it 3-1 before intermission. The Sockeyes won game one by a 7-1 score at the Aldergrove Arena. Kodiaks crushed 7-1 in game one Game one was no contest as the Richmond Sockeyes smacked the Aldergrove Kodiaks 7-1 to draw first blood in the Pacific Junior Hockey League championship series. The Sockeyes scored four times

in the first period and never looked back in game one of the best-of-seven playoff series. It was played at the Aldergrove Arena on March 19. The Sockeyes have home-ice advantage in the series between the PJHL’s top two teams, who were separated by a single point during the 44-game regular season. John Wesley scored twice in the opening 11 minutes before Matthew Bissett and Liam Lawson rounded out the scoring in the first. The fourth goal also spelled the end of the night for Kodiaks’ Jordan Liem, who entered the game with both the top goals against average and the top save percentage. Aldergrove’s Kodi Schwartz got the Kodiaks on the board with a power-play goal 3:25 into the second, but Bissett restored the four-goal lead. Jacob Wozney and Lawson added power-play goals in the third to complete the scoring. The Sockeyes power play went 3-for-6 on the night.

Getting up and active with PAL Spring is the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and start getting active. Introducing regular physical activity into your life is an important first step towards better health, a happier mindset, and more. The whole family will benefit from increased activity and getting on the road to a healthier lifestyle. There are so many known benefits to physical activity and an active lifestyle. Among them are a reduced risk of heart disease, premature death and stroke. Being active has also been proven to help improve self-esteem and confidence, help you sleep better, increase your energy and reduce depression, among many other things. Furthermore, it helps maintain functional independence, mobility, and bone health. For many of us, it can be quite daunting to take that first step towards an active lifestyle. And it can be more challenging to start something new without any help. The good news is residents of BC have access to a free physical activity counselling service called the Physical Activity Line (PAL). Through a phone call or online, qualified exercise professionals are available to provide exercise and physical activity advice and help you develop a customized physical activity plan for every member of the family, from children to older adults. When it comes to physical activity, more is better. To achieve the health benefits, it is important to try and progress towards the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, which recommend at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day for children and youth and 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity each week for adults. Adults and older adults should also add muscle- and bone-

strengthening activities that work the major muscle groups at least twice a week to help with balance and prevent falls for those with mobility impairments. Physical activity doesn’t have to mean playing a sport or going to the gym. Playing a family game of tag, going for a swim or taking a walk outside with the family pet or to the store to get groceries count towards the physical activity recommendations. Try out something new; you may find your new favourite activity! In any case, you’re bound to have some fun and feel like a happier and healthier you.
