KES seeking input on common goal BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor If all things were possible, what would you see in our region? What assets does our region already have? Those questions form the basis for Community Conversations, a community development program sponsored by Kootenay Employment Services (KES) and the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) that will allow the community at large to choose a common goal through brainstorming and networking. “It’s not like a consultant does a survey and gives you a list,” said Eden Yesh, who runs the program and is manager of KES’s Invermere branch. “It’s a real cutting-edge approach to community planning.” Four monthly meetings have been held at the Snoring Sasquatch, with two more planned for April and May, in which residents from all walks of life meet for dinner (sponsored by CBT), then break into groups of eight to 10 to answer the two questions. “We’re finding a common goal to work toward no matter what sector you’re in,” Yesh said. “You take off your hats when you walk through the door and all are equal.” See INPUT, page 3

Kelowna RCMP arrest Beaudry BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Jason Beaudry is once again behind bars. The prolific offender was arrested in Kelowna last week, within days of his release from jail, Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

Ironically, his arrest was made on a warrant obtained because he did not come back to Creston as he had planned. When Beaudry missed a scheduled probation appointment in Creston, Kelowna RCMP were able to act quickly. “They knew where he was,” Gollan
said. “Earlier he had been found with a small amount of cocaine but his probation conditions weren’t up in the computer system yet, so the cocaine was seized and no charges were laid.” Beaudry who has a lengthy criminal history, is being held in remand in Kelowna pending a court appearance.

Tall Weeds can be Dangerous To Your Family and Pets The yard should be an oasis for the family and a place to relax after a hard day. It should be a space used for picnics, play or serenity. An overgrown yard full of weeds and brush makes it difficult to enjoy a warm day or summer night. The wildlife that should be colorful birds and butterflies are instead flies, mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. The insects are a nuisance and could spread diseases.

Did you know a single weed can produce as many as 250,000 seeds? The old saying, “One year's seeding means seven years’ weeding” holds true. And it adds up quickly. The more seeds you have, the more weeds you have. Weeding might be considered a nasty chore, but it's a great way to really get to know what's going on in your garden and yard while enjoying the outdoors. Plus, when it's done in the right frame of mind, weeding can be a pleasant, Zen-like, experience. With spring just around the corner and April (open-burning month) ahead, it is a good time to think about getting rid of unwanted weeds, leaves and brush that has lingered in the yard throughout the winter season. Please do your part in keeping your neighbourhood free from weeds and other overgrown vegetation. Thank you for your cooperation and please remember to obtain a permit before burning.

Cruttenden and Rob Cleve, basses Sam Richardson and Jim Thompson. “The new scientific information about the human heart is what inspired me to take on this production,” said Blake Thompson, director. “For centuries, the sages have spoken of the power of the human heart. Now we are beginning to uncover scientific facts about the heart, which not only support the old intuitions but force us to take a hard look at how we are living our lives. This productions explores in song and poetry and facts the powerful yet elusive
human heart.” Music includes extremely varied works ranging from classic rock pieces like Loves Me Like Rock, Shambhala and The Longest Time to choral works with texts from poets like Hildegard of Bingen, Chief Seattle and Sara Teasdale. CBC cancels TV drama Arctic Air, starring Creston’s Pascale Hutton BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
The popular CBC drama Arctic Air is one of several television shows that has fallen victim to the public network’s loss of lucrative NHL hockey rights. Arctic Air star Pascale Hutton, a Prince Charles Secondary School grad, said on Thursday that she was disappointed, but that the cancellation wasn’t unexpected. “It was a surprise and it wasn’t a surprise,” she said, “because the series has been doing well but CBC losing Hockey Night in Canada has a huge financial impact. “I had braced myself for anything that could happen — no show is really ever safe, and Arctic Air is really expensive to produce.” Her disappointment was evident in the telephone interview, though. “In season 3 we really hit our stride. Everything seemed to jell,” she said of the series in which she plays a pilot and coowner of a small commercial airline based in Yellowknife. “I was really excited at the prospect of going into season 4, but not now. It wasn’t meant to happen.” Arctic Air joins Cracked, a mental health crime series, George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight and The Ron James Show as series cancelled recently. CBC lost NHL rights to Rogers, and has traditionally used Hockey Night in Canada revenues to subsidize the cost of other programs. Now, after a rare three-year gig, the Creston-born actor finds herself back on the audition trail, looking for new work.
Input
From page 1 So far, about 160 have participated, and Yesh wants input from 300 before June. Anyone who attends is welcome to return and answer further questions — newcomers and returnees are separated for the brainstorming sessions. After guests have mingled and dished up dinner from a buffet, Yesh explains the process, then lets the groups — each of which selects one member to take notes and one to speak — brainstorm for 15 minutes per question. When ideas are presented from the groups, others in the room often cheer or applaud their favourites. “It’s a really fun time,” said Yesh. Ideas are sorted into 12 themes, including agriculture, recreation, youth, religion and
“I’ve been kind of insulated from job hunting for a few years,” she admitted. “I’ve been very comfortable. But my agent reminded me that everything has a beginning, middle and end — that’s just part of the career I have chosen.” Despite the show’s cancellation, Hutton hasn’t been completely free to stay at home and be a full-time mother and wife. The last filming day for Arctic Air was in January (on a snowy day on Va n c o u v e r ’ s G ro u s e Mountain) and in February she was in two episodes of Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart. “It’s a period piece from 1910,” she said. The series, which just wrapped up its first season, is set in a frontier town, giving
Hutton a welcome chance to play a much different character than Krista Ivarson in Arctic Air. “Period costumes, mannerisms, relationship dynamics — they were completely different for me,” she said. “I played a theatre actress from New York — over the top and very theatrical, always breaking into song and playing the piano. “I started referring to the show as When Calls the Heart: Where Pascale Makes an Ass of Herself! It was great fun.” While she expects her character to return if Hallmark Channel renews the show for a second season, Hutton is also busy looking for more work. “I’m now back to auditioning, but I have a whole new outlook and appreciation for the process,” she said. “I’m enjoying it more than ever. Life seems full of opportunities right now — I’m not entrenched on one path.” She recommends that Arctic Air fans not give up on the series just because it won’t be returning for a fourth season. “There are a few episodes to air before the two-part finale, which is truly, truly actionadventure like you’ve never seen in Canada before. Truly epic,” she said. “I sent an email to writer Jon Cooksey and told him, ‘You’ve written a feature film,’ in the last two episodes. “It’s a massive feat of visual effects, crazy locations and drama. Massive in scope and scale. I think people are going to be blown away.” The final two episodes of Arctic Air run on CBC April 1 and 8.
housing. Three or four of them are particularly popular. “Those columns keep getting longer in my Excel sheet,” Yesh said. After the ideas have been gathered from the six sessions, all participants will be invited to a single gathering in June, where voting will select a common goal to work on together. Participants will then create milestones and definitions of success for the project, which will be implemented and monitored by KES. For ideas not picked, a date will be set for people to bring them to KES and get connected with appropriate contacts. “It’s going to be the first, we hope, of many community projects,” said Yesh. The idea for the networking series came from Community Conversations, a book by Paul Born, founder of Tamarack, an institute for community engagement, who spoke at the CBT
symposium held in Creston in the fall. The book encourages this grassroots approach to community development, and Yesh has been blogging about it on the Tamarack website. “They’re really excited that we took that book and turned it into this initiative,” he said. The participants are enjoying the opportunity to take charge of a project, whatever it may be, without waiting around for someone else to do it, and Yesh encourages others to get involved. “It’s an amazing way to get out and feel like you’re making a difference,” he said. For those who cannot attend the Community Conversations meetings, the first two questions can be answered online at www.ourcommunityconversations.com, and more updates on the project can be found at www.facebook.com/Creston Va l l e y C o m m u n i t y Conversations.

NDP calls MMBC a ‘failure’ BY JEFF NAGEL Black Press The NDP is accusing the provincial government of handing over control of B.C.'s blue box recycling system to Torontobased multinational executives who will be unaccountable while B.C. businesses and households pay higher costs. Opposition small business critic Lana Popham raised the issue of Multi Material BC in the legislature Monday, calling on the province to change course before the agency's new system for recycling packaging and printed paper takes effect May 19. “If government doesn't take a step back, B.C.'s recycling system is going to end up in a giant dumpster,” Popham said. “The control of recycling should never have been outsourced to the large corporate interests based in Ontario and abroad. This is a profound failure. This program needs to be paused and the entire
concept reconsidered.” Popham's comments follow the launch earlier this month of a campaign against MMBC by a coalition of business groups, including the newspaper industry, who say they can't afford to pay high fees imposed under the new system. “The Liberal government loves to claim they're getting rid of red tape,” she said Monday. “So it's quite ironic because MMBC is a Godzilla-sized red tape monster.” Although MMBC is registered as a society, Popham called it a “dummy corporation” because two of its three directors are Toronto-based senior executives with Loblaws and Unilever, while the third is MMBC managing director Allan Langdon. The Saanich South NDP MLA said the province should force MMBC to give B.C. stakeholders majority control. Popham said the MMBC system will be “dangerously close to monopoly,” resulting
in less competititon and innovation in recycling. She also said municipalities have been pressured into signing contracts with inadequate compensation for their costs, the threat of penalties for contamination and a gag clause. MMBC's new recycling fees on businesses will be passed along to consumers through higher prices, Popham said, calling it a "hidden tax" that won't be transparent to consumers. Meanwhile, she says cities are unlikely to rebate property taxes that households already pay for recycling. “The slogan for MMBC should probably be ‘Recycle once, but pay twice.’ ” In some cities where MMBC won't provide services, such as Kamloops, residents will pay for nothing, Popham added. MMBC says it will take new types of containers and packaging not collected in B.C. before. But Popham noted glass will no longer be collected curbside in many cities and there's little evidence the system will improve recycling rates overall. She said a smarter approach would have been to extend the beverage can depositrefund system to more containers, such as milk cartons and laundry detergent jugs. Liberal MLA Eric Foster (Vernon Monashee) responded in the Legislature, saying the province made changes to exempt most businesses from MMBC fees and paperwork if they earn less than $1 million in revenue, generate less than one tonne per year of packaging, or operate as a single outlet. REVIEW
Tom’s Gray Creek has something for everyone BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
As chatty and anecdotal as the author himself, Tom’s Gray Creek: A Kootenay Lake Memoir, is a welcome addition to the local literary scene. Tom, of course, is Tom Lymbery, longtime proprietor of the Gray Creek Store, which itself closely intertwined with the history of the East Shore. A postcard from 1932 is reproduced in the book, with a ferry looming in the background. Gray Creek Store served as the east shore ferry terminal until 1947, when the Kootenay Bay terminal was constructed. For as long as most of us can remember, Gray Creek Store has been an anachronism, one of those “If we don’t have it, you don’t need it” kind of places that are now more commonly found in the movies. Customers could be assured of getting a good story from Tom as he made his way unerringly to find what they were in need of. Tom’s Gray Creek is constructed in the much the same mode. It has something for everyone — wonderful photos, great maps, local history, reproductions of posters, maps and newspaper stories, and many anecdotes, all designed to bring the area’s colourful history to life. A forward by Nelson Star staff writer and historial Greg Nesteroff sets the tone: “Every small community should be so lucky to have a Tom Lymbery. “Well, make that Tom Lymberylike — there can only be one Tom. “Everything quirky and unique about Gray Creek — from the met-
MMBC
From page 4 "We've got all kinds of validation on this — chambers of commerce, local government, opportunities for local government to either continue the way they're doing it or to have
ric-free zone to the gold boulder (supposedly) lost in Kootenay Lake — seems to have his fingerprints on it. “He’s the chief booster of the East Shore (which he calls the Best Shore) and the second-generation proprietor of a country emporium where you can buy a fireplace and loaf of bread at the same time.” It seems almost redundant when Nesteroff mentions that Lymbery has been the president of the Gray Creek Historical Society since its inception. No offense intended to others, but Tom Lymbery is the historical society, a living, breathing compendium of all that has happened in the area’s known (and perhaps even unknown) history. One photo in particular says a lot about the author, giving readers a clue about Lymbery’s personal history. The photo shows a sign, once posted by Tom’s dad Arthur: “This gate, erected in 1913, is maintained as a legal protest against the acquirement of any unauthorized rights of way.” His dad, Tom writes, waged a 25-year battle against the provincial government over landowner rights. He first had land expropriated to provide access to the ferry landing at Gray Creek and then, in 1947, to the new landing at Kootenay Bay. Doesn’t this sound like a man who would father a fellow who declared Gray Creek a metric-free zone back in 1970? Tom’s Gray Creek also provides lessons in the area’s economic history. A page from Arthur’s account book shows that in 1920 he sold 1,700 pounds (measured in Tom’s beloved Imperial system) of fruit MMBC put their contractors in there to pick up," said Foster, who serves on the government's environment and land use committee. "MMBC came forward as an opportunity to change people's way of doing business and to put the onus on the original producers of the waste product or the recyclable product to reduce."

— black cherries, sour cherries, strawberries, apples, plums, pears and the like — for a net gain of $70.67. “But any revenue at all was welcome in those years, and this was substantial for the times,” Tom points out. Perhaps the most powerful testament to the book is that the more I went through it the more I wanted to linger on each page. The layout is gorgeous and inviting, with a brilliant selection of photos, illustrations and maps that that make this memoir a visual treat. When part 2 is released (part 1 only takes us up to 1945) we will have a comprehensive history of Kootenay Lake’s East Shore. Even more important, we will have another book to treasure by an author who is one of the Kootenays’ great treasures. Tom’s Gray Creek is available at the Gray Creek store on the East Shore, and at Black Bear Books in Creston.

Let’s just say we are at a low point in Canadian politics. And who’s to argue, given the sudden resignations of Alberta premier Alison Redford and federal finance minister Jim Flaherty, the self-imposed leave of absence taken by MLA Jenny Kwan, the continued absurdity of Rob Ford staying on as Toronto’s mayor, even the great brouhaha surrounding a councillor in the tiny B.C. town of Greenwood? Granted, shenanigans are harder to hide than ever before, given that most bipeds now carry cellphones-cum-audio recorders and cameras, and with them the ability to post their findings onto the Internet within seconds of events that traditionally rarely saw the light of day. Redford’s demise might not have been a huge surprise if she had been brought down by a party in which she never did seem to really fit. But that her own hubris, in the form of a trip to Nelson Mandela’s funeral (in the company of an aide who presumably was along to tote luggage and provide security from her boss’s legions of admirers in South Africa) provided the tipping point. How to explain the utter stupidity, first to run up a large expense, then to refuse acknowledgment of the bad decision, then to flip-flop and agree to pay it back? Strangely, the biggest surprise, Flaherty’s resignation, hasn’t generated much controversy. He has been a remarkably steady finance minister, who survived an early brouhaha in his early years at
Canada’s top financial post when he broke an election promise to impose a tax on income trust. He leaves with a balanced federal budget in the offing — at long last
that flared up, leading to the removal of a city councillor from his role as Greenwood’s representative on the regional district board. With a population of only about 700, this tiny Highway 3 speed trap is the country’s smallest city, but not immune to controversy. “I didn’t realize things could get so exciting in Greenwood politics,” I said to someone familiar with the community. “It’s always like this,” he Lorne Eckersley answered. Last I heard, the councillor in question had said he would — but his long string of deficits refuse to attend his council’s in camand increases to the national debt era meetings without a legal reprewere pretty much entirely orchessentative, an odd stance considering trated by his boss when Harper that in camera meetings would norlowered the GST. We take refuge in the sangha
Sangha means the community of people who are guiding their daily lives by practicing meditation and studying the Buddhist teachings. When we take refuge in the sangha, we acknowledge the central role that other Zen practitioners have in our practice. We join a practice community and take refuge in the companionship we find there. That means that we have friends, fellow refugees, who are working with the same guidelines as we are. Everybody in the sangha struggles with their own discipline. Friends in the sangha provide a continual reference point that supports our ongoing learning processes. We act as mirrors for each other and remind each other that we are not alone in our training. That is the kind of companionship that is meant by sangha. We are all in the same boat; we understand each other, share a sense of trust and a sense of larger-scale, organic friendship. So taking refuge in the sangha means being willing to work with our brothers and sisters in the dharma, while being independent at the same time. Nobody imposes his or her heavy notions on the rest of the sangha. Instead, each mem-
ber of the sangha is an individual on the path in a different way from all the others. As trust builds in the sangha, we offer each other the right to point out each other’s ego

trips and to share the wisdom of the moment. At the same time, we feel safe enough to demonstrate our own weaknesses and let others see through us. Companionship within the sangha is a clean friendship — without expectation, without demand, but at the same time, fulfilling. Once we have taken refuge in the sangha we no longer regard ourselves as lone wolves who have such a good thing going that we don’t have to relate with others. We recognize the value of building community. We become generous with our time, and out of gratitude for the teachings remain a member of the sangha in order to benefit those who are finding Buddhism
for the first time. The idea of sangha is one of constantly opening and giving. The discipline of taking refuge in the Buddha, the dharma and the sangha is something more than a doctrinal or ritual thing: it is being physically infected with commitment to the Buddhist life of wisdom and compassion. These refuges transmit the teachings into our mind-body systems. After taking the three refuges, the energy, the power and the blessing of basic sanity that has existed in the Buddhist lineage for the 2,500 years enters our way of life, and we finally become a full-fledged follower of the Buddhist teachings. When we do this, we are living the life of a Buddha. Suggested practice: For the next two weeks notice the quality of your relationships. Can you call your friends on their ego trips without fearing rejection? Do you feel comfortable exposing your weaknesses? Do you share a path of spiritual practice? Kuya Minogue is resident teacher at the Creston Zen Centre and will be offering classes on the 16 precepts of Soto Zen Buddhism at 7 p.m. on Thursday evenings through April 17. Ukraine unrest part of U.S. plan Bus rider glad for help To the Editor: The events in Ukraine appear very authentic, even idyllic: a country valiantly struggling for democracy. But on closer look it becomes obvious this is part of a pre-planned U.S. and European Union (EU) push eastward, the aim being to make Ukraine accessible for looting by their banks and corporations. Many U.S. organizations, including billionaire George Soros and company, have been active in Ukraine since the demise of Soviet rule, discovering and financing various right-wing groups, including fascists. These bought groups eventually became the opposition who through street violence toppled the government. Victoria Nuland, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, reported on Dec. 13, that the “U.S. has invested five billion dollars in agitation in Ukraine.” There you have it, straight from the horse’s mouth: The new world order doesn’t come cheap. Besides, it is not even new. It’s the same old order of lies, hypocrisy, and plunder. The only new elements are the tremendous amounts of violence and the almost total control of everything on the planet by the Anglo-American-Wall Street Empire. Ukraine is no exception, the Empire is involved in it for its own gain, and only the gullible and the very foolish imagine otherwise. I see no advantage for a working class man in this project, because he will only get poorer when Ukraine becomes part of EU. According to www.wsws.org, President Barack Obama, in a public statement delivered in Mexico, threatened that “there will be consequences if people step over the line.” He hastened to make clear that Washington is referring not to the right-wing demonstrators who have attacked security forces with gunfire, firebombs, paving stones and clubs. Rather, he said, “We hold the Ukrainian government primarily responsible.” In the course of his brief remarks, Obama repeatedly used the phrase “peaceful protesters”, a description very much at odds with their wild and deadly attacks against security forces in Kiev and other cities. After the bloodiest fighting on Feb. 20, Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych gave in to the West-supported opposition and visiting foreign ministers of France, Germany and Poland. A national unity government that will include the opposition will be formed. Later this year, elections will be held. The U.S., although not formally present at these negotiations, “applauded the results.” Its statement declared that the Obama administration is gratified by the outcome in Kiev as “consistent with what we have advocated. … These statements underscore the utterly reactionary and reckless policy of the imperialist powers, which have worked with fascist groups to drive Ukraine and the entire region to the brink of war. In November last year, Yanukovych cancelled the signing of an association agreement with the EU at the last minute and instead moved closer to Russia. Since then, Germany and the U.S. have systematically sought to destabilize and divide Ukraine.” Regardless of the immediate developments on the ground, the likely outcome for Ukraine will be as planned by western imperialists. She will have to dismantle her major and minor industries, her social safety net, and sell to foreigners everything that is worth anything at bar-
gain-basement prices. All other former Eastern Bloc countries had to do the same in order to join the EU. Ukraine is a win-win situation for the Empire. Anton Skerbinc Boswell
To the Editor: I was a passenger on the Brewster bus that went off the road east of Creston on Feb. 17. Our driver did an admirable job of avoiding a collision with a passenger vehicle that spun out of control in front of us. It was almost as soon as we looked around and realized that none of us was injured that people from Creston began to arrive to help us. Your town can feel confident that your emergency services are well prepared to respond in a hurry to accidents. You should also be proud that these volunteers and professionals are so willing to provide their assistance to travellers in distress. I can tell you personally how reassuring it is in a situation like this to see the fire rescue vehicle and ambulance appear in minutes. Well done! We’re also very grateful to the Creston Valley Thunder Cats for providing us with the bus that got us to the comfort and hospitality of the Creston and District Community Complex. We actually reached our destination in Nelson without missing a night’s sleep. This was only possible thanks to the kindness of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats and their bus driver and a Creston Fire Rescue truck. They moved us and our luggage to Kootenay Bay in time for a midnight ferry ride. I want to express my thanks for all the friendly and professional support and assistance that were extended to me and the rest of the passengers on the Seniors Alpine Ski Club trip. Jim Kinnaird, President Seniors Alpine Ski Club Calgary, Alta.
Proud of rec complex To the Editor: What a difference a few years makes! It was seven years ago when a referendum was passed that gave us the renewed Creston and District Community Complex (CDCC) we have today. From that decision and through the efforts of the design team, we have a community complex that is the talk of the region and one that all residents of the surrounding area can be proud to have and use for 12 months of the year. The phrase, “If you build it, they will come,” really applies. The Creston Curling Centre was host to the 2014 BC Masters Curling Championships March 5-9. For five days, Creston was on display to 16 teams who came from all regions of the province to compete. In a round-robin playdown, the men’s Will team from Sparwood and the women’s Jeffries team from the Alberni Valley won and advance to the nationals that will be held in Coaldale, Alta., at the end of March. Creston’s hospitality shone as about 100 volunteers and officials helped stage this competition at the complex. About 100 curlers, including spouses and coaches, were overwhelmed with their experience at the CDCC. The work of the volunteer committee at the curling centre, under the direction of Cathy Robinson, was incredible. From fundraising, advertising, transportation and officiating
through to hospitality and ice making, the centre was on display to the provincial curlers and Curl BC. The wow factor about our complex was stated again and again! The friendly staff and help at the front desk to the ongoing cleaning and care in every corner of the facilities by the maintenance staff were evident by all those who came to compete. This, together with the support of our many sponsors, helped make the Masters an event that all participants will never forget. Without a doubt, this facility is the best-run business in town. My appreciation as a user of the complex and as a taxpayer is extended to the members of the Regional District of Central Kootenay Creston Valley service committee, who continue to search for opportunities to improve the use and management of this facility. Your commitment to this effort is evident as the complex has morphed to its current operation today. It will continue to evolve to be better and better. We have come a long way since the referendum. We have a facility that we can be proud to display and use. “If you build it, they will come.” True! Now we need a bigger parking lot! Ross Gowan, President Creston Curling Centre

Time change is practical To the Editor: (Re: “Changing time wouldn’t be practical”, March 13) In his letter, Mr. McMackin stated the time zone issue “also seems it comes from someone ‘new’ to the valley, who doesn’t appear to understand, not having lived here very long, the real issues of the community related to being basically halfway between larger centers in different time zones.” As a relatively new resident of the Creston Valley (33 years), I fall into the aforementioned category; and yet I’ve heard most of the reasons why people oppose switching to daylight time in the spring — everything from keeping our valley unique, not being able to squeeze an extra hour of light from the sun and confused cows that won’t know when to stand and deliver. And there are those who would rather not admit to being bothered by having to change the clocks on their DVD players, VCRs and eight-track players. This simple concept of daylight time garners a lot of attention and passion, even anger, so it’s time to put the issue to rest once and for all. Let’s vote. I suggest we hold public debates and forums, and then put it to a referendum by adding it to the ballot for the next civic election. Then we could say that we not only believe in democracy, but we practice it too! I wonder how many people who are so opposed to daylight time have never even experienced it. I’d bet half of those who now oppose the change would love it by the end of the second year of its implementation, and wonder why it took us so long to adopt it. What is so horrible about having an extra hour of light at the end of a lovely spring, summer or early fall evening? Picture this: We’ve been through a long, grey winter with short days, rain, snow and cold. It’s springtime now, and the days are finally getting longer. People are out walking, riding bikes and enjoying the outdoors. Adults are tossing the ball with their kids or for their dogs in the park, teens are skateboarding and people are doing yardwork. It’s awesome to be outside again with family, friends and pets. But then darkness shoos us in. See TIME, page 8

lem life throws at us, the constant, daily, nagging, unending necessity to reassess the “natural” way we feel like acting and what we would really like to say to that so-and-so. So, what is the upshot? Do I merely want to argue the doctrine of original, and inherent, sin against all the well intentioned, but utterly mistaken, religious optimists. God forbid! I hope not. My prayer, by grace alone, is not to create pessimism that leads to hopelessness. By grace, I am praying that the resurrection mercy of Christ would turn our hearts to His eternal, sacrificial, love and grace for help and salvation — for forgiveness, life, hope and even joy. My prayer is that we would not solely be driven by unrelenting need for spiritual help but that we would be won over by His pursuing grace that calms our hearts and minds in the middle of the messes we struggle to keep cleaning, the grace that lays its hand upon our shoulder, the grace that whispers, “It’s OK, it will all come out in the wash.” This grace is what holds us and carries us in hope as we keep cleaning up after ourselves, until at the end of the end of all the ages of this withering reality we call our world, the final mop up will be over when, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. LIL’ MUTT PET RESORT
I've been here before. I didn't want to come back, but the lovely Dad who adopted me went over the Rainbow Bridge. Before he died, he had my teeth • Boarding Dogs & Cats done and always kept me groomed, making my long coat glisten. I'm getting • Pet Food & Supplies old, past 10 now. I really don't want to be here, and it makes me do funny things. I need to be back with a loving person Grooming Boarding who laughs at my eccentricities, and will 1304 NW Blvd 3323 Phillips Rd keep me safe and under control.

hence the name varying hare. They are hard to spot in these seasons but in spring and fall they are sometimes less camouflaged, when they are transitioning from one coat to the other. I have seen them wearing a dappled brown and white coat when the snow was totally gone. Imagine a summertime coat in a late spring snowfall. True rabbits do not usually change coat colour from season to season. This snowshoer shortly headed away from the trail and into the forest where it was seen no more. While snowshoeing along an old trail I went back to the young evergreen to we met up with another on “snow- determine what the snowshoe hare had shoes”. Getting ready for spring in the nursery finds me doing all kinds of little jobs on the side. Want to hire help? They’ll appreciate a functioning restroom and so will the customers. ready for the dormant spray. In the greenhouses, we have begun transplanting. The seeding has gone well and is on time. I try for about 7,500 seedlings each week starting after Christmas through to midApril. In my pocket is a pack of peanut seeds, a $2.49 experiment. Peanuts originate from South America in and around Bolivia. They are self-pollinating, indeterminate, herbaceous annual plants. Apparently in terms of dollar value Davies per acre they used to rank in second place and are commonly grown through the southern United States. Did you know that Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, was a peanut farmer? Until 1870 they had only been grown as a garden crop and were often used for pig feed. These peanuts are packaged as a 100-day crop but to produce a descent yield you should have 3,000 growing-degree days. In Creston, we probably fall a little short of heat units. How can a gardener get
Nursery Notes Evan Next, I have to pump out the sales area basement, as one of the two sump pumps in there died a couple of days after the big melt. If you want to buy an upright pedestal style sump pump in town at this time of year, this week doesn’t look good for you and neither does next week. Fortunately, I have learned not to throw away the old ones and can now repair these kinds of devices. The weather has behaved through mid-March and the orchard is cleaned up and
extra heat units into a crop? My preferred source of heat is a greenhouse. If you haven’t one of your own, you can fashion a miniature one or you could also use a wire hoop frame and use clothes pegs to attach remay fabric to it in order to get the crop off to an early start. Farmers from the Prairies are familiar with shelter belts. Heat loss from wind can really cool a field off. If you haven’t planted a shelter belt around your garden it might be worth considering. Alternatively, one could plant a fall rye cover crop and then only till in every second row. By leaving the fall rye, a green manure standing for the early part of the spring season, you would reduce the heat loss from wind at the soil level substantially. Later when you till it in, your garden soil benefits from the organic matter and nutrients it adds. My interest in growing the peanuts is not in developing a new field crop for Creston. I’ll be happy if the girls and I can dig a few out of the ground and roast them. I’d like to cultivate their interest in horticulture. Over the years crops come and go but people still enjoy gardening. Nowadays we like new flower types and new garden vegetables. Often these are
plants my grandparents had never heard of, like the amazingly popular calibrachoas, or million bells. Happy gardening! Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Getting up and active with PAL Spring is the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and start getting active. Introducing regular physical activity into your life is an important first step towards better health, a happier mindset, and more. The whole family will benefit from increased activity and getting on the road to a healthier lifestyle. There are so many known benefits to physical activity and an active lifestyle. Among them are a reduced risk of heart disease, premature death and stroke. Being active has also been proven to help improve self-esteem and confidence, help you sleep better, increase your energy and reduce depression, among many other things. Furthermore, it helps maintain functional independence, mobility, and bone health. For many of us, it can be quite daunting to take that first step towards an active lifestyle. And it can be more challenging to start something new without any help. The good news is residents of BC have access to a free physical activity counselling service called the Physical Activity Line (PAL). Through a phone call or online, qualified exercise professionals are available to provide exercise and physical activity advice and help you develop a customized physical activity plan for every member of the family, from children to older adults. When it comes to physical activity, more is better. To achieve the health benefits, it is important to try and progress towards the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, which recommend at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day for children and youth and 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity each week for adults. Adults and older adults should also add muscle- and bone-
strengthening activities that work the major muscle groups at least twice a week to help with balance and prevent falls for those with mobility impairments. Physical activity doesn’t have to mean playing a sport or going to the gym. Playing a family game of tag, going for a swim or taking a walk outside with the family pet or to the store to get groceries count towards the physical activity recommendations. Try out something new; you may find your new favourite activity! In any case, you’re bound to have some fun and feel like a happier and healthier you. The Physical Activity Line is available Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m in the Lower Mainland, toll-free at 1-877-725-1149. For more information, visit www.physicalactivityline.com or email info@physicalactivity.com.

Driveway team warms to the Hagerty Spring Thaw event The Hagerty Spring Thaw is a budget-minded driving adventure through British Columbia for pre-1979 touring and sportscars. And that was all cost conscious Driveway editor Keith Morgan needed to know to take part in this un-scored, non-competitive event, which takes place next month entirely within the province of British Columbia. “I spend the entire year driving new cars so this seemed like a fun way to spend some fun time in a classic,” Morgan explained. “My old friend George Holt, from Gabriola Island, has a rather fine 1954 Jaguar XK120

To ensure an “adventure”, the route will remain secret until competitors receive their entry packages at registration. Way-finding instructions will be detailed and clear, and will not require any calculations or rally knowledge. The event consists of 100 percent paved roads, with some mountainous terrain, and driving is scheduled during daylight hours. Car wash facilities are available at each overnight stop. Crest View seniors donate 8,000 hours in ’13 THERAPEUTIC ACTIVATION PROGRAM FOR SENIORS
The Telus Community Ambassadors recently donated $5,400 to the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS), thanks to the combined efforts of the Crest View Village Auxiliary (CVVA) and Krafty Kronys. The Crest View Village Auxiliary knitters donated an average of 790 hours — almost 8,000 hours in 2013 — to make knitted blankets, mitts, hats and dolls, and the Kronys spent 351 hours in September and October to create items specifically for the ambassadors’ fall craft sale. The Telus ambassadors from Cranbrook supported both groups by supplying yarn, fabric and other materials, as well as a list of things they required for their projects and craft sale. CVVA is an informal and hard working group of seniors who use their time and talents to make the lives of others happier. Men and women, most of whom live in Crest View Village, look after persons who reside in Crest View Care Village by providing birthday cards, Christmas presents, slippers and lap blankets. CVVA has also raised $18,000 to purchase medical equipment for these residents. Besides supporting TAPS through the Telus Community

Ambassadors program they also have sent boxes of gifts, handmade and purchased, to the Shamattawa, Man., Christmas and annually donate cash, several boxes of toys and gifts, and
handmade articles to the Creston Ministerial Association’s Christmas hampers. Of the knitters who work for TAPS and Telus projects, only two are under 85 years of age.
Clara Ruska has been the coordinator of this group for several years, and is now sharing her duties with Gilda Gilmore. Telus ambassadors have supported TAPS for three years, a
partnership that has given TAPS financial support and also allowed community members an opportunity to use their skills and time to contribute to the communities of the Kootenays.

The BC Government is now off-loading our recycling decisions to Toronto.
Under its new regulations, the BC Government has set up an association led by big corporations to take over the local Blue Box recycling program throughout BC. If you look closely, you’ll see that of seven board members, six are executives of Toronto-based multi-national corporations, with the seventh weighing in from Montreal. How do you like that, British Columbia? This means, unlike the current program run locally by BC municipalities, this new program will be managed not by people whose first responsibility is our local environment, but rather, their Bay St. profits. That can’t be a good thing for BC. The most perplexing thing is that we currently have a Blue Box program that works, is efficient, and costs BC homeowners just
$35 a year on average. The new proposed system does not guarantee to keep our local environment as its first priority, nor does it guarantee that there won’t be job losses here in BC. It doesn’t guarantee service levels, or say anything about how big business will pass along the costs to you when you go to pick up a pizza or buy groceries. Yikes! Perhaps this is why several of BC’s municipalities refuse to sign onto the new program, calling it a “scam.” Given that, maybe it’s time you called Premier Clark to keep BC’s environmental decisions right here in BC where they belong.
What’s going on here?

Photo of Kuskonook found in Kaslo archives BY GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star
A mystery photo in Kaslo’s Kootenay Lake Archives labelled Three Forks turns out to be a rare view of the boomtown of Kuskonook in 1898. Or so I think. The dry-mounted picture shows several wooden commercial buildings on an embankment with a boardwalk and two sets of stairs in front. The buildings include a general store, drug store, tobacconist/ poolroom/fruit stand called The Club and two multi-storey hotels — the sign on one reads “Klondyke Hotel, A. Manson, Prop.” There’s a big stump and some boulders in the foreground and forested mountains in the background. At least 20 men pose on the street. A handwritten label at the bottom says, “Three Forks, BC, 1892,” but someone crossed it out and wrote “Ainsworth” — only to cross it out again and restore it to Three Forks. No photographer is indicated. Kootenay Lake archivist Elizabeth Scarlett says the photo’s provenance is unknown because the historical society acquired it before the archives was established. The picture intrigued Victoria researcher Peter Smith, who notes first of all that the date is almost certainly wrong. Klondyke (or Klondike) hotels only started sprouting up after the Yukon gold rush began in 1897. Secondly, there was no Klondyke Hotel in Three Forks, a ghost town in the Slocan, although there were ones in Sandon, Nelson and Robson. A. Manson, however, was not the proprietor of those although he did run the Grove Hotel in Nelson for a while. On the 1898 B.C. voters list, Alfred Manson is listed as a hotelier in Kuskonook, and indeed, the civic directory shows he ran a Klondyke Hotel there. Kuskonook, on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, came to life that year during construction of the BC Southern Railway and Nelson and Bedlington Railway. It was a rough place, with several saloons and at least one murder. Beyond the hotel, however, there isn’t much else in the photo to verify it as Kuskonook. A sign above the drug store appears to read in part “—TERS.” In 1898, the town druggist was James M. Patterson. Might that sign have borne his name? The photo isn’t immediately recognizable as Kusknonook because
CRESTON VALLEY
This photo was identified as Three Forks in 1892 — but evidence suggests it is more likely Kuskonook in 1898.
it doesn’t show Kootenay Lake, which is presumably off camera range to the right. Also, hardly any photos of Kuskonook exist. Tammy Hardwick of the Creston Museum said she is only aware of one in the BC Archives, also taken about 1898, but while it does show the lake, none of the buildings appear to match our mystery photo. Kuskonook burned down on March 20, 1900, including more than 30 homes. Most were unoccupied, but the remaining residents were left destitute. A relief committee was organized in Nelson to help them. Nelson city Coun. Robin Cherbo has a connection to old Kuskonook — his grandfather Pedro Cherbo was co-proprietor with Gimmi Mannerino of the Union Hotel, one of only three buildings to survive the fire. Cherbo maintains a mining claim his grandfather staked in the area, the Osprey No. 1, and has a few old documents and early letterheads, but alas, no photos. The naming of Kuskonook is confusing and complex, but it is derived either from a Salish term meaning “long point” or a Ktunaxa term meaning “edge or end of lake.” It is also written Kuskanook, which is how the CPR spelled it when it launched a sternwheeler by that name in 1906.
