Over the winter months hundreds of people have been enjoying skiing and walking the 50 km long Slocan Valley Rail Trail. A dedicated group of volunteers of the Slocan Valley Heritage Trail Society (SVHTS) have been out grooming and track-setting the Rail Trail to make it possible. Pictured above from right to left: David Hogg, Dennis Stefanik (seated) Scott Carlson, Bruce Barber, Kurt Hilger and Craig Lawrence (program co-ordinator). Next month the SVHTS will be looking for community support at “Dot Day,” which is when the community decides who can take advantage of funding through the Columbia Basin Trust Community Initiatives Program (CIP). They are hoping to replace the seven year-old GinzuGroomer and Tracksetter with a new one for next winter. “Dot Day” takes place in early April and you must be a Slocan Valley resident to participate. To find out more about the Slocan Valley Rail Trail, visit their webpage www.slocanvalleyrailtrail.ca or join them on Facebook. Submitted

Community Pretty spring flower a sign of hope valerie rossi West Kootenay Advertiser

A sign of spring is cropping up across the region as Canadian Cancer Society volunteers dig into their annual Daffodil Days and pin campaigns. The first flower of spring, with its bright, cheerful blossom has become synonymous with activities of the Canadian Cancer Society and the support it brings to families facing a cancer journey. Fresh bunches of daffodils are being sold for $5 in various locations in participating West Kootenay communities. Trail, Salmo and Nelson’s efforts wrapped up last week while Grand Forks will get underway this week and Rossland’s doesn’t bloom until the first week of April. That’s when the daffodil pins campaign will kick into gear. Volunteers will be out selling the by-donation pins, a symbol that those living with cancer are not alone on their journey. “I am a big believer in volunteering and also that if young children start with their families at a young age, they will continue as they grow up,” said Trail campaign chair Deborah Shergold. “Let’s face it, we really need our younger people to take over and help us; They are the future in so many ways.” She’s talking specifically about her seven-year-old granddaughter Dezra Kuchar, who met with Warfield coun-

Deb Shergold, organizer of Greater Trail fundraiser. Sheri Regnier

cil this month to affix the very first flower pins in the area. It’s never to late or too early to help out, said Shergold, noting that her granddaughter’s commitment was awarded two years ago, when at five she went door to door with the pin campaign. Dezra will be wearing a daffodil and smile when she gives thanks to the many volunteers by serving at the “Daffodil Tea” March 31 from 2-4 p.m. at the Canadian Cancer Society office in Trail. The annual drive all began over a cup of tea. In 1954, daffodils were used to decorate tables at a fundraising tea hosted by Lady Eaton in downtown Toronto, Ont. More than 700 women attended the event, which raised money for the Canadian Cancer Society. The bright and cheerful

blooms proved to be so popular that society volunteers realized they could raise funds and awareness by selling the flowers. The sale of fresh-cut bunches quickly became a popular annual tradition of the society and has since blossomed into April being called “Daffodil Month.” In 2000, the Canadian Cancer Society adopted the daffodil as its official logo. For many, the vibrant springtime flower has come to symbolize brightness and hope in the fight against all cancers – of which there are more than 200 different types. Money raised supports the society’s continued efforts to prevent cancer by raising awareness and advocating for healthy public policies, funding cancer research, and offering community-based support programs and services to cancer patients, their families and caregivers. Trail gave $8,100 last year and this year Shergold would like to see the bar lifted to $10,000. “It doesn’t specifically come back to the Trail location but it is funding the support programs that all Trail residents can take part in,” explained Allison McCarthy, annual giving coordinator for the Canadian Cancer Society’s B.C. and Yukon division. The Kootenay branch located in Trail offers financial support to help cover travel and lodging expenses for those commuting for treatment.

SPEAKING FOR ANIMALS

PETS on PARADE MARCH AND APRIL IS THE TIME OF SPRING AND THE HOLIDAY OF EASTER March and April is the time of spring and the holiday of Easter. The Easter bunny is a familiar and joyful figurehead of the special day, but can lead to many bought or adopted rabbits around this time, which end up unwanted once Easter is over. The Trail Regional BCSPCA would like to take this time to educate our community about rabbits and their care, so that if you do decide to bring a rabbit into your family, you will be able to make a more informed decision.

These animals have unique personalities. Some are shy and will take more time to relax and feel comfortable in your home, but once used to people, rabbits can make fun and affectionate pets. They are smart and can learn to use a litter box. So remember, commitment, patience and appreciation for rabbit behaviors are important in becoming life-long friends with your new family member.

Rabbits are the third most popular pet after cats and dogs, but with more unique care needs and behaviors. Linking Names and Places

An Erie tale from the Salmo area GREG NESTEROFF West Kootenay Advertiser

Fifty-second in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names Erie is today a bedroom community of Salmo but once was a mining town in its own right, originally called North Fork for its location on the Salmo River. It’s first mentioned in the Nelson Miner of September 5, 1896: “The camp is easily reached from Nelson, there being daily trains on the Nelson & Fort Sheppard Railway, which reach the North Fork in about an hour …” The fledgling town was also called Gilliam’s on a ca. 1897 Salmo townsite map and the 1900 directory of BC mining companies listed the Monterey Gold Mining Co., incorporated in 1897, as having its registered office at Gilliam. That was after miner and hotelkeeper Marcus Heath Gilliam (1868-1948), whom author Clara Graham credits in Kootenay Mosaic with renaming the town Erie. She gave pioneer druggist and postmaster James R. Hunnex as her source, but when Hunnex answered an inquiry from the Geographic Survey of Canada in 1905 about Erie’s name, he didn’t mention Gilliam. However, he explained the change was to avoid confusion with the north fork of the Kettle River: “Accordingly, one of the then-residents who had at one time lived at Erie, Penn. suggested the name of the settlement be changed to Erie, and as the American element has always been numerically strong here, the matter was so decided.” While it’s unclear if Marc Gilliam ever

lived in Erie, Penn., his mother was from Erie County, N.Y. Both those places as well as Lake Erie honour the Erie tribe, an Iroquoian group whose name was a shortened form of Erielhonan, meaning “long tail.” C o i n c i d e n t a l l y, Salmo’s Desirae Clark was recruited to play hockey for Mercyhurst College of Erie, Penn. In a 2004 Vancouver Sun story, she admitted “it was a case of rushing to the atlas after the call to find out where exactly Erie was located.” It’s also possible

Erie, BC was named for the Erie Mining and Milling Co. or Erie Consolidated Mining Co., both founded in 1897. The former owned a claim in the Slocan called the

Erie. In any case, the Erie townsite was surveyed on May 27, 1897 by Henry B. Smith. Its streets included Garnet, Crystal, Coral, Agate, Topaz, Ruby, Opal, and Pearl. Only the latter three survive today. The first newspaper reference was in the Victoria Daily Colonist of June 13, 1897: “The towns of Ymir, Salmo, and Erie are all reported to be thriving finely ...” (All three were laid out for railway magnate D.C. Corbin.) However, it took a little while for the

new name to catch on, for when journalist R.W. Northey asked a Rossland railway ticket agent for a ticket to Erie, he received a blank stare: “’North Fork,’ I continued, rather amused at his mystification. ‘Oh, ah! North Fork. Here you are. Three dollars and ten cents.’” The Erie post office operated from 1898 to 1948. The body of water near the townsite was originally called Trout Lake but became known as Erie Lake. Marc Gilliam moved back to the US, dreaming of California, but was immortalized at Erie by Gilliam Creek, so named by 1901. His granddaughter, Holly Michelle Gilliam, is better known as Michelle Phillips of the 1960s folk rock group The Mamas and the Papas.

Driveway readers to spend billions to buy a new set of wheels Driveway readers are in the mood to splash out an astonishing $3.6 billion-plus of their hard-earned cash to buy new vehicles this year. This is not some by Keith Morgan wild, optimistic prediction but a solid forecast based on what our readers revealed in a comprehensive survey conducted on behalf of Black Press by Pulse Research, a company with 30 years of experience in asking the right questions of consumers. In a series of wide-ranging interviews, Black Press newspaper readers from all over the province gave Pulse a comprehensive account of their spending plans. Their intention to spend $53.1 million on fish and chips, $45.8 million on tooth whitening, $13.1 million on tattoos or piercing, $9.1 million on pet toys and $1.9 million on tuxedos, raised some smiles. But the auto spending intent grabbed our serious attention. A massive 123,275 households will take vehicles for a spin and sign on the dotted line. A massive 51,895 will park a new car on their driveway, 32,312 will house a sport ute in their garage, while another 28,395 will opt for a truck out front. Most people surveyed knew what kind of wheels they would be looking for and what they were prepared to pay.

Misty-eyed memories of my first truck By Ian Harwood

I can remember buying my first truck in 1986 like it was yesterday. It had to be a specific make and model: I was looking for. A Toyota 4x4 pick-up, black in color and it had to be in good shape. I wanted it to be bone stock with as little mileage as possible. I found one in the paper that was on the lot at a dealership in Surrey. Quickly I called them to inquire and they said they had a couple of people with deals written up, but it didn’t look like they were going to go through, so if I wanted it I had better get down there right away (Naive at that age to

fall for and old trick like this). I had to get a ride from a friend and I remember it was snowing so it was slow getting there. When I arrived it was running and they were anxious for me to drive it. I took it around the block and parked it in a vacant lot, hopped out and started to inspect it. I immediately noticed rust and some body damage. Clearing the snow off inside the truck box, I could see more damage. It looked like someone had dropped a bowling ball into it from about a high ledge. I could smell antifreeze and noticed some oil leaks. I headed back to the dealership disappointed. The salesman was there to greet me. He asked if I had any con-

cerns and I started to point out the obvious. He quickly dismissed them as cosmetic and said do you want to write a deal on it because he has people in the showroom wanting to buy it. I told him I was not interested. On the ride home, I thought how quickly I had to grow up and look at everything as if someone was going to take advantage of me, sad reality. The next day I picked up the latest copy of Truck Trader and spotted the exact make and model I was looking for. I bought the 1983 edition for $9,000 from a family that only used it once a week to drive to Abbotsford and back to Coquitlam for supplies.

It was worth every penny of the $12,000 I put into it..

Ian Harwood

’’

It was perfect; funny how God puts things in your path and everything works out in the end. A week later I started to work on it. I acquired some used 33 inch tires and installed a 4” lift kit. I drove that truck every night after work to show it off. I washed it so many times I thought the paint was going to come off. A year had past and I purchased many more items for the truck. A major car show was coming up soon and I decided I would put it in the back of the shop and work on it so I could enter it into the show. Giving up my truck for a month was tough and I had to make a few sacrifices to get around.

My first car show was a hit. I came in second place and I was determined the following year I would be back with something they have never seen before. I poured most of my paychecks into my truck and took it off the road for two months to prepare for its transformation. I called up the owner of Interco Tire and asked about some Supper Swamper tires. He said he had a set of 44x18.5x15 tires in his office that nobody has seen before. At that time the largest they made were 42”. I told him to send them to me I would figure out what I had to do to fit them under the truck. When they came in they looked big. So big I was getting worried. The custom leaf springs

came back from the spring shop and I knew my calculations were correct. With all the multiple shocks in place, chassis freshly painted, motor work done, a lower gears installed it was ready for the tires. I cleared away the debris pile that accumulated around my truck. Placed the floor jack under the rear axle and started to jack it up. With the rear tires on and clearing the fenders it was time to move to the front. When I started to lift the front I noticed how high the hood was getting, at that point I knew I had built a monster. With all the tires in place I slowly drove it out of the shop. The sun gleaming down on the freshly polished paint and the smell of paint

burning off the exhaust system still sticks in my mind. Outside it looked like a beast; people were slowing down to take a look. The show was a week later and I came home with first place. Mission accomplished. It was worth every penny of the $12,000 I put into it. Then I sold it for $15,500 in 1990 so that I could afford to get married . . . need I say any more? Tell me your truck story and please send pictures. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

Demand for diesel vehicles increasing ers focused on saving money and protecting the planet concurrently often find that diesel vehicles are more fuel efficient than vehicles that run on regular unleaded gasoline. Although diesel costs more at the pump than other fuels, drivers who fuel up with diesel gasoline can save around 30 percent through improved fuel efficiency over regular gasoline. That can add up to considerable savings over

Today’s diesel vehicles have been redesigned and reimagined, making them a growing commodity for buyers. While diesel cars and trucks were once the relative outcasts of the automotive consumer market, diesel passenger vehicles are now the center of newfound demand. One of the main draws of diesel cars and trucks is their fuel economy. Consum-

tures that will ignite fuel injected directly into the cylinder head, according to BMW. Diesel vehicles are equipped to use more of the energy content of the fuel to produce output than vehicles that run on regular unleaded gasoline. It takes less fuel to provide the same power as standard gasoline. In the past, diesel cars were associated with black, sooty exhaust and clanking engines. However, today’s modern diesel cars are quiet and burn fuel more cleanly due to new technology. New, clean diesel fuel is the only diesel fuel being sold in the United States. Although diesel vehicles have been popular in Europe for a while, they have not been very appealing in North America. Things are starting to change. German-based Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and stk#14125 Audi have a history of offering an extensive range of diesel-powered vehicles in the American market. Recognizing the demand for diesel cars and trucks, Chevrolet/ GMC, Ford and Jeep are now offering diesel vehicles that they hope will attract a new legion of customers. Diesel-fueled cars have evolved through the years to be vehicles that can rival gasolinepowered automobiles on the roads. The Hagerty Spring Thaw is a budget-minded driving adventure through British Columbia for pre1979 touring and sportscars. And that was all cost conscious Driveway editor Keith Morgan needed to know to take part in this un-scored, non-competitive event, which takes place next month entirely within the province of British Columbia. “I spend the entire year driving new cars so this seemed like a fun way to spend some fun time in a classic,” Morgan explained. “My old friend George Holt, from Gabriola Island, has a rather fine 1954 Jaguar XK120 roadster so I’m going to ‘nagivate’ for him. Yes, knowing George I will be doing more ‘nag’ than ‘nav’!” The drive starts on Friday, April 25, in Squamish and finishes in Hope, on Sunday, April 27. To ensure an “adventure”, the route will remain secret until competitors receive their entry packages at registration. Way-finding instructions will be detailed and clear, and will not require any calculations or rally knowledge. The event consists of 100 percent paved roads, with some mountainous terrain, and driving is scheduled during daylight hours. Car wash facilities are available at each overnight stop.

Driveway team warms to the Hagerty Spring Thaw event continued from page 11

The Morgan and Holt Driveway team will photograph the event and their journey along the spectacular 1,200km route over three days. The account of their adventure will appear in Driveway and online at drivewaybc.ca in early May. Squamish Classic Car Adventures and the West Coast Rally Association organize the Spring Thaw and follow the BC Rally Regulations. The event is open to sport, touring and classic cars from 1979 and earlier. The organizers say that if people be-

Pick of the Week:

Faster than a speeding bullet . . . almost The McLaren 650S Coupe made its North American debut this week at the Vancouver International Auto Show. The British-made super car can accelerate from zero to 200km/h in just 8.4 seconds. The 4-litre, twin turbo V8, boasts a surprisingly good fuel consumption rate of 11.7 L/100K. Mind you, perform a few burnouts and you will be visiting the gas pumps with more frequency. At press time, there was no sticker price available other than the European price, which is in excess of $350,000. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Drives-UCrazy Shining a light in the daytime

Brian Burnet, of Coldsream, writes: “What drives me crazy are the number of late model cars and trucks without operating Daytime Running Lights, as required by Canadian law. The reason to have them is for visibility. I would like to see road checks by police. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

hatchback in black 23 cubic feet of in-your-face cargo space!

Sport-tuned suspension that will lift your spirits!

Some cars don’t know what they want to be. Not so with the 2014 Kia Forte5. With its sportinspired pedigree and exquisite 5-door design, Kia has brought the hatchback into razor-sharp focus. There’s plenty of practicality for passengers and cargo, but the Forte5 has an alter ego that’s considerably more daring: 6-speed gearboxes and up to 201 horsepower. Colours are optional.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week March 28, 2014

Spring officially began on March 20th this year but it is the New Moon in Aries that really launches the season. It occurs on March 30 at 11:45 am PDT. What is of added significance is the Sun and Moon will also be closely conjunct Uranus. This indicates what can be described as an unpredictable explosive charge. Uranus says ‘expect the unexpected’. It can be compared to the joker, yes in the playing cards, but like the one in Batman too. Not surprisingly, Uranus is symbolized by the Fool in the Tarot. 0 is the number for this card and the history of both 0 and the Tarot are full of mystery, intrigue and twists and turns. In addition to Uranus spliced into this New Moon Seed, all three are in a tight and charged aspect to Jupiter and Pluto. Venus forming a contentious angle to Saturn meanwhile adds a sobering weight to the plot. Altogether this will prove to trigger some very dynamic, assertive and even aggressive energy patterns and consequent events. The culmination of this charged dynamic at the time of the Full Moon in Libra on April 15 at 00:42 PD is equally dramatic. Astrologers have been talking about this one for months. To begin, it is a Lunar Eclipse, which is known to, in effect, block the past, accelerate time and produce events that bring about key turning points for the future. Just hours prior to this peak point in the cycle, the Moon will make a series of challenging aspects again to Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto and to Mercury and Mars as well. This will activate people emotionally and noticeably. Mercury in Aries meanwhile will make hard aspects to Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto and Moon/Mars as well. The rest of the Month remains packed with power as well specifically on April 20, Easter Sunday. I will elaborate on these themes now and in the coming weeks. Stay tuned.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

Your pioneering spirit may feel a bit more like a poltergeist under this Moon cycle. However, what might come as a surprise is just how cooperative and willing you stand to be. At least a few antics are likely though, if not from you then from significant others. You may at least undergo a few tests the passing of which will be worthy of a star or two on your collar. It may seem like you can feel the thundering hooves of a charging herd. This describes some of the energy patterns at play for you these days. You are ready and willing to work with the situation. You may need special tools, techniques and/ or strategies. There is a danger of losing focus due to too many thoughts and interests. Set clear boundaries. This new cycle indicates a resurgence of your sense of individuality and a creative rush to boot. The soul searching and perhaps challenging period of last month is yielding to resurgence; a veritable rebirth. Anticipate your confidence levels to rise steadily. Key communications and especially collaborations will prove inspiring and empowering. A new day is dawning in your public and professional life. This is the start of an expansive and dynamic cycle. Yet it will probably prove quite challenging. Of course, you will not be alone in this regard. Everyone is feeling the rising intensity levels and the challenges they consequently imply. This is a call for an empathetic approach balanced by a firm resolve to prevail. This Aries New Moon is catapulting you into action. You are in the mood to go big. With Mars Retrograde, your energy and confidence levels may be up and down. However, the emphasis leans to the up side. To succeed you must be willing to overcome fears that may be blocking progress. The key is to take deliberate action to build momentum. Some new initiatives in your daily rhythm and routine which stand to affect your overall lifestyle have begun. There may be a few delays and a few curve balls to deal with, yet the process is in motion. It may take until mid-May before all the lights are green. Patience will pay off at least eventually, so aim to be strategic and flexible on all fronts.

Some shifting and shaking or at least unexpected events on relationship fronts are underway. These may be giving you reason to feel cautious. At worst, they are producing worry and stress. Your health may be delicate these days, so stay cool in the heat to keep stress levels down. Control your imagination and stick to the facts. You are determined to take some bold new leads and initiatives. These are requiring a creative and imaginative approach. You may wish you could feel more confident. While you can practice self-control, you cannot control the flow. Exercising trust in and acceptance of circumstances and timing will help. How much fun can you have? Measurements aside, you are in a playful mood. Boredom can be the source of stimulating dramas, to keep things interesting. Just remember that life does not judge but does teach by consequences. Meanwhile sweet dreams of what could be are bouncing around in your mind. Dream on… but take some action too. Whatever is happening on the home front, it is probably not boring. Circumstances are pushing you to take account. Or is that a headcount of your best buddies and key contacts? Either way, digging deeper than you might usually is in the script. Finances, investments, inheritances and/or tending to taxes are featured. Tis the season…. Many new thoughts, perspectives and perceptions are awakening in your mind. These are linked to new places and faces as well. You are in the mood to cut loose anyway. The time is right to experiment with new modes of self-expression. Cultural stimulations will provide a few perks and prove satisfying as well. Exciting times! You are in an ambitious mood. As much as this likely includes stimulating your economy, you may also want to realize other returns as well. Bringing old affairs to resolution represent their own form of getting ahead. This process of knocking on and opening new doors and of closing old ones could well produce a boost in confidence.
