Hockeyville Top 2 announcement met with jubilation in Central Alberta and beyond BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The room was electric with expectation as a crowd of about 500 people waited for the announcement which would send ripples of exaltation spreading across Sylvan Lake, Alberta and Canada. The community centre was full to capacity Saturday evening with an avid group of people, young and old, who waited patiently for the end of the second period in Hockey Night in Canada’s Edmonton Oilers-Calgary Flames game as it tilted overwhelmingly in Calgary’s favour. They were waiting to hear how Sylvan Lake fared in the Kraft Hockeyville competition to climb to Top 2 and begin the final round of voting. As the period wound down, entertainment provided by West of the Fifth halted, the volume was turned up on the television program projected on a large screen, and everyone focused on the message they so anticipated. There were several groans as commercials intruded delaying the message to 9:58 p.m. — just in time for the beginning of voting at 10 p.m. Salmon Arm’s total was flashed first — 847,193 votes in the previous 48 hour voting session. Then Sylvan Lake flashed onto the screen and the numbers started spiralling higher and higher. After they surpassed Salmon Arm’s total, the crowd erupted in screams of joy, hands flying overhead in victory, high five’s, hand shakes, hugs and other expressions of relief. The town had captured the
top spot in the west and moved into the Top 2 in the country. Sylvan Lake’s total stopped at 1,563,797 — almost double Salmon Arm’s total. Then people turned back to the screen to see what happened in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The result — Kingston, Nova Scotia recorded 1,472,836 votes to capture the Eastern berth over Central Bedeque, PEI with 1,403,259 votes. Sylvan led the whole country with the most votes. The evening was truly a community and family affair with youngsters eagerly seated in front of the television screen when they weren’t playing floor hockey, dancing or chasing each other. Food, entertainment, games, door prizes and more were enjoyed by people as they visited and talked about their previous voting experiences while eagerly waiting. Later in the evening, Sylvan’s organizers were provided with figures from the previous round of voting which showed the community’s efforts had also surpassed all of the other Top 16 competitors. It polled 1,059,932 in that round — the second highest was Kingston at 824,208. With Saturday’s announcement, Sylvan Lake has earned $100,000 towards arena upgrades at the multiplex. The final round of voting was to decide who claimed the Hockeyville 2014 title, the opportunity to host a pre-season NHL game this fall, and more publicity on Hockey Night in Canada and CBC. Judging from response in the following 48 hour
voting window, which ended Monday at 10 p.m., everyone delved into the voting mode with renewed fervour — the campaign’s Facebook page — Sylvan Lake Hockeyville 2014 — the most up-to-date portal on all Sylvan’s activities — reported voters responding from across the country indicating their votes were coming Sylvan’s way.

Now that voting’s over, things haven’t slowed for the Spirit of Sylvan Hockeyville organizing committee. They’re now required to put on a huge celebration event in the multiplex the evening the final results are announced — Saturday, April 5. (See separate story for more information on initial plans.)

Hockeyville committee planning for big announcement celebration BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS Voting has ended in the great Hockeyville quest but the Spirit of Sylvan Hockeyville committee isn’t done yet. They’re planning a spectacular celebration to coincide with announcement of the final winner on Saturday, Apr. 5. Members of the committee met with representatives from Hockey Night In Canada and Kraft on Wednesday, showing them the community and discussing plans for the evening, which are still being formulated. Several projects are underway. A ‘people parade’ is being planned by Brenda Dale. It’s proposed to start at 2 p.m. from Centennial Park and head west along Lakeshore Drive then Call ahead for south on 50th Street, take-out! before turning east towards the multiplex. Another feature of the celebration is a decorating contest. All businesses are encouraged to decorate their storefronts and interiors, especially along the parade route, in the Hockeyville colours - red, white and blue with yellow accents. Recognizing that there will be national television coverage, portraying our enthusiasm is one of the requests of the committee, said Parsons.

Sometimes it lies dormant for awhile, but then something happens like the arena roof caves in. And, suddenly, its there again, alive and well and giving everyone a little nudge to go do their part and a little more. And, once again, it seems like everyone has listened and done just that!

Who will get to see NHL game? Dear Editor, A big cheer for everyone who voted for Sylvan Lake to win the West and the possibility of a pre-season NHL game. I know grandmothers, teachers, retired folks, hockey fans and many others who voted to put us over the top. Now the question becomes WHO will get to see this NHL game? Every single vote counted. No one vote was worth more than the other. A lottery should be held where all can purchase a ticket … for say $5 and that the number of seats be drawn with one ticket per number purchased. ie: 10,000 tickets printed - 500 tickets drawn and the balance of the funds go to the arena project along with the money from Kraft. Sidewalks that randomly end perplex new resident Dear Editor, My girlfriend and I moved to Sylvan Lake a couple weeks ago and think it was a wonderful choice to start a new life. Although, walking and biking around town, we noticed something we found quite strange; the lack of sidewalks. Walking down a main street (going past the fire hall and down by Rexall), the sidewalks just randomly seem to come to an end. We thought, since this is a very popular place in the summer months,

During the last seven days a considerable quantity of snow has gone and streets are drying up nicely. Robins have been seen at the golf course, and the weather is bright and sunny. ♦ ♦ ♦ Canvassing in the current drive for funds for the Canadian Red Cross has almost been completed. Results to

She gave a very interesting talk and showed slides of a recent visit she and Mr. Thompson made with other Members of Parliament and their wives to Washington. It was a tour of Canadian and United States InterParliamentary groups which had been invited by the U. S. government to tour Washington and the White House. ♦ ♦ ♦ A former resident of Sylvan Lake was honored in Calgary recently by Alberta Wheat Pool. Elmer Anderson has completed 25 years service with the Pool. Elmer was Pool agent at Sylvan Lake from 1947 to 1958, when he was transferred to Millet. Prior to that he was at Elspeth and Benalto.

A portion of downtown Sylvan Lake was evacuated Saturday morning after a truck crashed into the Telus building on 50 Ave., severing natural gas lines in the process. Emergency crews arrived on scene at about 5 a.m., and upon realizing the dangerous nature of the situation, pulled back and called in ATCO Gas crews. Power in the area was shut off between about 7:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and nearby residences were evacuated for safety. Nearby businesses also remained closed throughout the evacuation period. The truck was found to be void of any occupants, but caused a “large hole in the wall” of the building it crashed into, according to an early RCMP release. Wind helped dissipate gas released into the air, but a build up in the Telus building required crews to dig in front of the neighbouring Frontline Worship Centre to block the line and prevent further flow. After being adequately vented, the building was checked for gas by ATCO, and clearance given for the truck’s removal. RCMP in the afternoon declared the emergency over, and the area safe. Thomas James Hanger, 21, of Three Hills, has been charged with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, public mischief, failure to remain at the scene of a collision, and driving a motor vehicle with no
insurance. RCMP said Tuesday that the truck’s driver and three other occupants fled before police arrived on the scene. Later that day, the driver told police his truck had been stolen. Their investigation revealed, however, that he was the one driving it at the time of the crash, which caused “significant head injuries” to one 24-year-old male from Sylvan Lake, according to an RCMP release. He’s since been treated and released. A memorial service lunch at the nearby Legion was one of the day’s events affected by the evacuation, as organizers scrambled to find a standin venue close by. An extraordinary team effort resulted in the lunch being successfully relocated to Memorial Presbyterian Church, after food was removed from the Legion by firefighters. “There was nothing we could do, so we had to make other plans,” said Ladies’ Auxiliary past president Kathie Duncan. “We all pulled together and everybody did what they had to do, and we got it done. Everybody was really helpful.” After firefighters received permission to retrieve the food, a number of helping hands ensured it made its way to the church. Legion 1st VP Gordon Graham, branch manager Lisa Sweet and Ed Stevenson of Sylvan Lake Funeral Home were among those pitching in. Deputy Fire Chief Steve Scanland said he wanted to do everything in his power to make sure the memorial took place safely as scheduled.

Hard working individuals with a common goal. Community spirit. Anticipation. Anxiety. Hope. And.....finally! Elation. That’s what was going on at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre Saturday night when around 500 people gathered together so they could be front row and centre when Hockey Night in Canada made the announcement the community had made it to the finals in the Kraft Hockeyville contest.
The waiting, the hoping and the anticipation all came to a joyous conclusion when the announcement came that Sylvan Lake was the winner from the west, to vie with Kingston, N.S. from the East. Being in the top two cause the crowd at the community centre to break into cheers of victory. “The room erupted,” said Mayor Sean McIntyre. “It was incredible to be part of that. Incredible to be able to join in the celebration.” Local organizer Graham Parsons, who was voting even as he chatted during the phone interview, said he is overwhelmed
by the support and dedication the community has shown. “It’s just been tremendous,” he said. “I can’t thank everybody enough.” As the countdown begins to determine which community will be declared Hockeyville 2014, volunteers have no plans to rest on their laurels, but are busy planning another huge celebration for April 5. “Our Hockeyville committee is an expression of community spirit,” said McIntyre. “It’s inspiring to see so many people work so tirelessly. And I’m excited to get together one more time with our community for the Hockeyville celebration on April 5.”

Council has given its nod of approval to a multiple housing development with commercial use to be located at the marina. At its Monday meeting, council voted five to two in favour of the development provided several conditions are met. The proposal calls for 25 new row houses to be built on site. The existing commercial development will remain as well as the marina and boat launch area. Councillors Dale Plante and Megan Chernoff were opposed. Approval was granted with the condition that the developer provide cash in lieu for MR dedication to be used for the turn-around area, a portion of which will be located in Lighthouse Park. Cash in lieu shall be collected at $500,000 per acre for any outstanding area. Coun. Plante voiced objections to this condition. He also expressed concern about parking. “I am very much pro development, but not by bending the rules. I don’t believe we’ve done justice on this. I hope I’m dead wrong, but I cannot vote (in favour) of this based on the allotment done for parking.” Coun. Matt Prete voiced concern about the view. “It’s certainly going to affect the view traveling west on Lakeshore, (but) it’s okay. It’s not perfect,
but it’s okay.” Coun. Chas Payne pointed out the developer has complied with all the requested requirements. “The developer has done everything they’ve been asked to do. It would be hypocritical of us to say no. We have an obligation to approve (the development). And we want as many people on Lakeshore as possible.” Mayor Sean McIntyre said he sees the development as a positive. “We are not seeing a development over 60 feet tall which was the original plan and approved two years ago with the last administration. It’s is a compromise, certainly, but it is better than the last proposal. With this proposal we will see less of an impact on views, less of an impact on traffic and less of an impact on parking compared to what was approved previously.” After the meeting, McIntyre said he is also pleased to note that the area in which the lighthouse once stood will now be public property and accessible to everyone which paves the way for the Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake to go ahead with their Lighthouse construction project. Under this development agreement the boat launch remains accessible to the public. Objections to the development have been forwarded to council by concerned residents. Hiding the view of the lake, decreasing property values and a negative effect on real estate were the primary issues.

Traffic stop resulted in several charges being laid

Saturday, March 15 2:20 a.m. – A traffic stop was conducted at the Fas Gas on 50th Street in Sylvan Lake. A RCMP member observed the driver of a vehicle entering the Fas Gas lot at a high rate of speed and skid toward the gas pumps. The driver was questioned and exhibited signs of impairment. A breathalyzer was administered and the male was arrested at the scene. A 32-year-old Red Deer male is charged with impaired driving, having a blood alcohol level over .08 and operating a motor vehicle without having a license in possession. 9:53 a.m. – A charge has been laid against a 51-year-old Sylvan Lake male in relation to a breach of a restraining order. The male was witnessed in an area in which a condition not to attend was issued and was arrested as a result. He is charged with two counts of failing to comply with conditions of a court order. 8:41 p.m. – A 51-year-old Sylvan Lake male is facing several charges in relation to breaches of a court order involving an ex-girlfriend. The victim reported that several calls were made to

her in breach of a no contact order. The accused is now facing a charge of criminal harassment and nine counts of failing to comply with an undertaking. Monday, March 17 6:25 a.m. – A vehicle was stolen overnight from an address on Fieldstone Way in Sylvan Lake. The vehicle was taken from the driveway of a residence but it was unknown if the car was locked. RCMP are currently investigating. 9:28 a.m. – RCMP in Blackfalds recovered a stolen truck from the Sylvan Lake area. The vehicle was stolen from in front of a residence on Lakeway Boulevard. The owner was not aware of
the theft until after being contacted by police that the vehicle had been recovered. An investigation is ongoing. 9:40 p.m. – RCMP attended a domestic dispute on Range Road 12 in Red Deer County. Witnesses reported a female having a verbal dispute with a male in a vehicle parked off to the side of the road. Neither party was forthcoming with their identities when questioned by police. Further investigation revealed the vehicle to be stolen and the male was also found to be under warrant. Both are charged with possession of property obtained by crime less than $5,000 and obstructing a peace officer. The male also faces numerous other charges. Wednesday, March 19 10:42 p.m. – A domestic dispute at a residence on Harper Drive in Sylvan Lake has resulted in assault charges being laid against a 33 year-old Strathmore male. A 38-year-old female contacted 911 advising that she had been physically assaulted by her boyfriend. Alcohol was a factor in the incident.

Don’t run from your problems. We learn a lot about ourselves when life is tough. I have heard this said before – you’re not who you are in the good times, you’re who you are in the tough times. And I think that can be very true about ourselves sometimes. And there is a verse that I think is pretty interesting that says this: Ecclesiastes 7:4, “The mind of the wise is in the house of mourning, while the mind of fools is in the house of pleasure.” And for those of you who don’t know this verse, it basically means this: There are two ways you can live in life when you are faced with hardship. 1.You can embrace areas in your life where you need to change. 2. You can numb it. And to numb it is the worst way to go.
To be foolish is to run from your problems and try to ignore it or numb it with any vice that you want to name. If you go in to see a doctor, and all that the doctor prescribes to you is just something to numb the pain but not actually help the disease, that is usually not a good sign for you. It means that there is nothing being done about the disease. In the same way, if we are treating problems or hardships in our lives by just trying to numb the pain with addictions or any vice, you’re not really going anywhere. So when we are faced with these problems how do we respond? There is answer for this in the bible. Psa. 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.” Instead of running and numbing our pain, there is a God who wants to help you in your time of need. God bless you

Theft victim eager to see minivan thief caught BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Grateful to have her family’s minivan back, Giang Pritchard is now intent on seeing justice served to the person who stole it from her underground parkade in the early hours of March 19. And she wants it not for her own satisfaction, but rather to ensure others don’t fall victim to the same crime. “If he did this to me, you know it didn’t stop him from doing it to other people,” she said. “I don’t want to scare people, I just want them to be aware.” Pritchard first learned her minivan had been stolen when she went to take her daughter to school, and realized it wasn’t in the underground parkade where she’d left it. On Saturday, it was found parked behind an apartment building not far from where it had been stolen. While the vehicle appeared to have suffered only minor damage to the exterior, several items of value had been taken from inside. Pritchard said she wasn’t yet sure exactly what items were all missing, as she turned it over to RCMP almost immediately after it was recovered. “It looked like he had discovered that my gas light was on and realized that he wasn’t going to get far, and so he probably just ditched it,” she said. After realizing her van was gone, Pritchard took to the Internet to post information about its disappearance, along with screenshots of surveillance footage showing the man she suspects is responsible. Her online posts generated a strong reaction from hundreds of people in Sylvan Lake and across the province who shared them through Facebook in the days following the theft. And she’s grateful to those who helped spread the word. “It’s been amazing from near and far,” she said, adding she hopes others will benefit from hearing about her experience. “To some people, it’s just a stolen vehicle, but it’s our belongings, and they don’t have any right to it. “They have no business touching our stuff that we work hard for.”

Community Gardens plans for spring

Despite a winter which seems endless, Sylvan Lake Community Gardens is looking ahead to spring with optimism and confidence. Giselle Campbell, volunteer coordinator for the organization said a meeting regarding the community garden held March 20 was well attended and most of the garden plots are already spoken for. The community garden is located on 47th Street west of Main Street and contains 11 plots which average about 20 feet by 20 feet. Plots can be shared or used by only one family. The community garden is an excellent way for families to grow their own vegetables and enjoy the fruits of their labours. However, to keep up appearances and use the lots wisely, the gardens need to be maintained and weeded regularly. Campbell said those who wish to register to use a garden plot need to leave a $20 deposit so help can be hired if necessary to keep the garden spot clear of weeds. She said she is working with the town to secure a grant to purchase fruit bearing trees to be planted at the community gardens this year. The trees will make the spot more attractive as well as provide nutritious fruit. The garden plots are available to everyone. Those who have a bountiful harvest and end up with more vegetables than they will use are asked to consider donating the surplus to the Sylvan Lake Food Bank. A day of fun in support of a good cause is being planned to take place at Eckville Community Centre Apr. 12, and residents of Eckville, Sylvan Lake and beyond are being invited to attend. The event, which will feature live and silent auctions, is being held in support of Rhondi Staples in a bid to help her recover from cancer. She was diagnosed with cervical cancer in September of last year, and it’s since spread throughout her body. Now, after doctors said she cannot fly due to medication she’s taking, her family are facing potentially extensive road travel to continue her treatments and seek further advice. Friends of the Eckville-based Staples family have been working hard to organize the event, and are aiming to see as much money as possible raised. “We just figured that we would get together and try and raise some money to help out in any way that we can,” said Rhonda Miller, who’s co-organizing the event with Amber Vick.
Both Miller and Vick work with Phil Staples, Rhondi’s husband, at Newalta, and are gathering as much community support as they can. So far, they’ve received as a donation the rental of the community centre, and they’re hoping to receive many more donations in the days and weeks leading up to the event. At press time, exact details of the event hadn’t been confirmed, but Miller said they would be released as they become available. Design process underway for troublesome intersection BY TREENA MIELKE BLACK PRESS
The Centennial Street and 50th Avenue intersection could be realigned by next year if the design process works out. At its Monday meeting council agreed to direct staff to proceed with plans for the angled realignment of
the intersection which includes angle parking along 50th Ave. Mayor Sean McIntyre said council would prefer to make plans for an even alignment, but to do so would cut into the 30-metre buffer from the railroad tracks. “If we pushed the issue, we might not get the intersection and we stand to lose a very valuable parking lot,”

said McIntyre after the meeting. “As a kid growing up I always imagined I’d do something about that intersection,” he said. While he sees an angled realignment as a less desirable option than a straight intersection, he notes it will straighten out the traffic. “It will make the traffic movement more predictable for drivers,” he said. The proposed alignment will include islands and lines on the street designed to make the crossing safer and more efficient for vehicles and pedestrians. Town staff will work with Transport Canada to
design a suitable option. “We want to improve the situation, we don’t want status quo,” said McIntyre. Previously, council had looked into other options such as a traditional roundabout and a mini roundabout, but neither of these plans were viable as they encroached on the 30-metre buffer. Transport Canada is the approving authority in this matter and the body to which the Town will need to make application for intersection realignment. Transport Canada relies on input from CN Rail, who did not support the initial realignment plans.

Merkley aiming for Stampeders spot with walk-on tryout BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
A Sylvan Lake school teacher is chasing his dream of becoming a professional football player, and will travel to Richmond, Va. next month to showcase his skills at a walk-on tryout with the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League. Matt Merkley, 26, teaches Grade 5 at École Steffie Woima Elementary School, and was encouraged to attend the tryouts by his brother, who learned about them online. Initially thinking his brother was joking, Merkley was eventually convinced to begin organizing the trip, and will spend the weekend of Apr. 5 doing his best to impress. “I get one chance to do it and it would be a fun experience, so I just decided to do it,” he said. “As for nerves, I’m very nervous, but I don’t think I’m just walking on blindly. I’ve put my time in to train.” That time training has been spent in both Sylvan Lake and Red Deer, where he’s been preparing for the skill-specific testing he’ll undergo in the States. Trying out as a receiver, he’ll be tested primarily for his skills in catching and running. “I’ve always worked out, but (my current training) is more specific to what I’m aiming for,” he said. If his tryout is successful, Merkley will be selected to the team and become a professional football player. That would come following his many years of playing and coaching the sport in Sylvan Lake and around the province. Currently, he plays for Central Alberta Buccaneers. He previously played for the University of Alberta, and recently helped coach Sylvan Lake Bantam Lions. His decision to tryout for the Stampeders generated much excitement among the Lions, who have been raising funds to help cover the cost of his trip. A bottle drive and a bakeless bake sale were organized by parents and players of the team, and Merkley is grateful for their support. “I didn’t go around telling too many people about what I was doing, but when it got to the football community, they got this going, and the support has been amazing,” he said. “It was definitely unexpected.” NEED A

Sylvan Lake Film Society returns with “The Invisible Woman”, bringing to light the greatest story Charles Dickens never told. “In 1857, actress Nelly Ternan was performing in London’s Haymarket Theatre when she was first spotted by Charles Dickens. Ternan was 17, while Dickens was 45 and had been married some 20 years. The two began an affair, which was kept a secret from the general public for the duration of their lives. Theirs has since become one of the great love stories in literary history, as alluring for the speculation it inspires as for the details on record as fact. Based on Claire Tomalin’s biography of the same name, “The Invisible Woman” is a rapturous chronicle of Ternan and Dickens’s relationship, which prompted the end of Dickens’s marriage, survived a train crash, inspired characters and scenarios in some of the author’s most beloved novels, and continued until his death in 1870,” according to Mongrel Media. “The Invisible Woman” will play at Landmark Cinemas Monday, March 31st, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $8, available at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library until 5 p.m. Monday, or at the theatre that evening. As school classes arrived to view displays and demonstrations at Bentley Ag Society’s safety awareness at Blindman Valley Ag Centre, it became a bustling, noisy, busy place, Mar. 11. “It (the event) was very good. The organizers did a marvelous job organizing and setting it up and our volunteer base was very good,” said Joan Dickau, Bentley Agriculture Society past president who, along with Cora Knutson, helped welcome people as they came through the door. Each session was 20 minutes long. Fire department members manned the Fire Safety booth and showed some of their equipment. An RCMP member had kids practising hand signals at the Bike Safety area. Kids hunted with a detector to find what might be hidden under the ground at the TransCanada display. At the Fortis Alberta electrical hazard display kids and some adults jumped back when the first sizzle and a snap showed what could happen with a live wire. One of the most interesting interactive displays illustrated the difference between an unprotected person’s skull and the head of a person wearing a properly fitted helmet when bike or motorbike riding, playing hockey or skating, when horse back riding, or anytime a helmet should be worn. When a raw egg inside a plastic zip-lock bag was dropped on the floor, it broke and the inside oozed out. When a raw egg fitted with a proper fitting mini-size Styrofoam/foam helmet was dropped, nothing happened. In fact even when it was thrown higher or thrown harder against the floor, nothing happened. If
the helmet was not fitted properly there was some protection, but a risk. With an improperly tightened ‘chin strap’ for example, the egg (head) could slip out and could crack or break. Jennifer Johnson helped students understand how it might seem like fun to play in a truckload or bin full of grain, but how difficult it could be to ever get out. It could swallow you up like quick sand. No matter how hard the children pulled, they couldn’t get the board attached to the end of rope out of the bottom of a simple bucket of grain. Outside there was bigger equipment including a tractor, an ATV, and more. Chemical look-a-likes showed how a dangerous chemical or liquid could be easily confused with a safe food or drink item. Almost 350 Bentley school students attended, as well as approximately 25 staff and a few parent volunteers. Grades K-5 went through the stations in the morning and the rest of the grades up to Grade 12 in the afternoon. The school was impressed with the entire event and various stations engaging for everyone. Walk-ins of an extra 35-40 adults, small children not included in the count, made the attendance count over 400 overall. Beef-on-a-bun, a bag of chips and a bottle of water were supplied to each person by Servus Credit Union and attendees received a cloth Ag for Life bag with a few free handouts. Grades K-5 had their lunches delivered to the school while the older students and public-at-large ate their lunches at the ag centre. Great volunteers, supportive businesses, generous sponsors, local ag society executive and members, and a farm safety grant made the free event possible. A similar day was sponsored by the Bentley Ag Society in March 2011.
