Fired society bosses get severance pay By Tom Fletcher Black Press
Four Vancouver anti-poverty charity executives fired for a tax-funded spending spree that included luxury foreign trips, limousines, restaurant meals and booze will receive severance pay of up to eight weeks plus accumulated vacation pay. On March 24, Housing Minister Rich Coleman said the severance is required under British Columbia labour law for four top executives of the Portland Hotel Society, which operates low-income housing, addiction services and a string of non-profit
businesses in Vancouver’s downtown east side. Directors of the society resigned after terminating the four executives – Mark Townsend, his wife Liz Evans, Dan Small and Kersten Stuerzbecher. Coleman said a new “professional” board will continue to examine society expenses, and if any potential fraud is discovered, information will be sent to Vancouver Police. An audit by KMPG Forensic Inc. covered three years of expenses – 2010 through 2012. It found managers and directors expensed nearly $70,000 over three years on restaurants and more than $300,000 on travel.

Trips were to Vienna, Paris, Bristol, Istanbul, New York City, Los Angeles, Banff and Ottawa. In addition to hotel rooms, some costing more than $800 a night, there were charges for spa services, alcohol, fresh flowers, a cruise for a society manager and other questionable expenditures. NDP Leader Adrian Dix said the same day he has requested an unpaid leave of absence for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant MLA Jenny Kwan, who repaid $35,000 in travel expenses to the society on March 21. In a tearful news conference, Kwan said she had been told by her husband, Dan Small, that he was personally pay-
ing expenses that were actually billed to the society. Kwan accompanied Small and their two children on a trip to Disneyland, and on another trip to Vienna and Bristol, England. The Portland Hotel Society operates the supervised injection site for street drug users and a network of businesses including a coffee shop and a pest control service, in addition to managing multiple single-room occupancy hotels in the downtown east side. The society receives more than $28 million a year from the B.C. government, the vast majority of its revenues.

‘Starting from scratch’ Mobile vets offer new, convenient service for pet owners
Gaven Crites Free Press
Pam Barker and Michelle Collett wanted to do something a little different. Pet owners in the South Cariboo are glad they did. The veterinary professionals – Barker has a doctor of veterinary medicine and Collett is a registered animal health technician – opened a new business in February.
“
We wanted to offer a service that wasn’t really available, especially to people in the outlying areas." – Pam Barker
Folks might have already spotted the Cariboo Country Mobile Veterinary Services trailer (two large dogs and a cat grace its wood-coloured
exterior) at a number of locations in the area – from Clinton to the Interlakes, and soon in Lac la Hache. “We wanted to offer a service that wasn’t really available, especially to people in the outlying areas,” explains Barker. “Most of the outcalls veterinarians provide in the area are for large animals – cattle, horses, things like that. What we’re offering is small animal exclusively – dogs, cats, rabbits, birds – and the ability to do surgery, dentistry, to actually do procedures and blood work diagnostics. “Most house calls, historically in the area, are limited really to euthanasias.” Collett says the duo has received a good response from pet owners in the couple weeks they’ve been on the road. “The communities have been absolutely amazing.” A trip to Lac la Hache was planned in the near future.
“We’re fully booked [for that],” Collett says. “People are so stoked about us coming out that way, and coming to them. Now, it’s a fiveminute drive [for clients], instead of a 45 minute drive, with an animal.” Another nice feature about the pair’s new business is a new computer system that allows

Pastors lead Bible Lands Tour in October A Bible Lands Tour is being planned from the Cariboo for the fall of 2014. There will be a free information session at the 100 Mile House Library featuring a short video and a few slides from a recent trip on April 3 at 6:30 p.m. A group of 20 people will go on an international tour to the State of Israel from Oct. 15 to 27 and all interested members of the community are invited to participate. If you come, you will never be the same. Full information is available online at www. biblelandstour.com. Major sites visited along the tour will include the Sea of Galilee, the Jordan River, the Dead Sea, and Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, those on the tour will follow in the footsteps of Jesus as they visit multiple sites, such as the Mount of Olives, Western Wall, Via Dolorosa, and the Garden Tomb. “Going to Israel was not a great priority for me,” says Pastor Cameron Johnston one of the leaders of this group. “But when I got there and experienced the Sea of Galilee and Jerusalem, I began to realize the spiritual growth potential of a trip like this. Now, I’m really excited to be working with a colleague in leading this tour. “I know that every person on this trip will be forever transformed and will never be the same after going to Israel.” Anyone from the community interested in joining the tour can call 250-267-1660 or e-mail cameron@silverhills.ca.

Turner on fire for Blazers 108 Mile Ranch resident Micky Turner scored the overtime winning goal to help lead the Bellingham Blazers to its second Cascade Cup in the Northern Pacific Hockey League playoff championship on March 9. Turner fired a shot over the glove of the West Sound goalie to seal the deal in game 5 of the playoff finals and end the West Sound Warriors’ hockey season. Turner, who played his minor hockey in the 100 Mile & District Minor Hockey Association, is in his second season with the Blazers. During the regular season, he played 36 games, scoring 19 goals and 31 assists. The Blazers finished first in the regular season and knocked off the Tri City Outlaws in three consecutive games in the first round of the playoffs. This earned Bellingham a berth in the championship round up against their arch rivals West Sound Warriors from Bremerton, Washington. The Blazers split the first two games at home and also went one and one in Bremerton, which set up the rubber match in Bellingham for a winner-takes-all final. The Blazers were up 5-3 going into the third period, but allowed West Sound to tie it up late in regulation time, sending the game into

Horse Lake Water System repaired The Cariboo Regional District’s Horse Lake Water System (HLWS) sustained a water pipe break in the Anderson Subdivision on March 20 and the affected residents were contacted by the CRD. The water had to be turned off to residents’ homes on Granberg and Wolfe roads and residents connected to the HLWS were asked to restrict water use until repairs could be made. Around 4 p.m. on March 21, the CRD issued a press release stating the repair of the water pipe break would be completed that day. Residents on the water system resumed normal use, and restrictions were no longer required. Affected residents along Wolfe Road received door-to-door notices that the repairs were completed. The CRD offered its thanks to the HLWS residents and media for their co-operation and assistance on March 20-21.
District bylaws enforced Park were asked to check first with the District office to determine if a licence or liability insurance was required, and they complied. Other issues dealt with in February included a local business owner who was reminded to renew an outstanding 2014 business licence.

Loose dogs, snowboarders and prohibited parking
The commissionaire’s report for February was presented at the March 11 District of 100 Mile House council meeting. Bylaw enforcement officer Harold Underhill stated in his report that three separate incidents of dogs running loose were acted upon, two of them in response to public complaints. A report of a black lab running around on Fraser Avenue during the mornings could not be confirmed, although Underhill said he moved his shift in order to attend the location early for four days. The dog’s owner was provided a copy of the related bylaw. A large brown dog attempting to gain access into Save-OnFoods was picked up and impounded after no tags or licence were found. The third incident was a matter of requesting its owner put a leash on the dog. Two incidents of parking in a disabled parking space without the required parking tags were handled through District warning notes. Another, unlicensed vehicle parked on Scott Road was removed by its owner upon request. Snowboarders building a ramp at a stair railing in Centennial
