Energy upgrades available AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter More than 6,000 lower income residents in the Gold Pan City are eligible for energy efficient upgrades up to $5,000. A partnership between BC Hydro and FortisBC seeks to help Gold Pan residents with low incomes to register for free energy assessment and receive energy efficient upgrades worth $300 to $5,000. “This program is going to save people money and over 6,000 families in Quesnel are able to benefit,” Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes said. “I hope as many as possible take advantage of this opportunity to reduce their energy costs and make the call to register.” Contractors with the Energy Conservation Assistance Program will be in the Quesnel area this spring to complete the energy assessments and install the free energy saving products. Residents are asked to register by March 21. An energy evaluator will conduct a personalized home energy assessment for each customer to determine which energy efficiency upgrades are available and then install the products. Available products may include: • energy efficient light bulbs, • aerators for faucets in the kitchen and bathroom, • water-saving showerheads, • insulating wrap for water heater pipes, and • weather-stripping for doors. “The purpose of the Energy Conservation Assistance Program is to help low income customers make their homes more energy efficient and lower their energy bills,” Minister of Energy and Mines Bill Bennett said. “The energy-saving advice and products are available free of charge, and the program is also offered to all communities in B.C.” Some homes may also qualify for an ENERGY STAR-labelled refrigerator, or insulation for an attic, wall or crawlspace. Customers who receive a fridge could save up to $165 per year in energy costs, and customers who receive insulation upgrades could save over $300 per year. For more information on the program or to register, visit: bchydro.com/ecap or call 1-877-4468855. Since 2009 more than 8,000 B.C. residents have benefited from the program.

Quesnel residents turned out in force to both the information session at the Twin Arenas and at the Legion. Coun. Scott Elliott and Mayor Sjostrom mingled with the crowd answering questions, while people perused the choices other communities have made and the choices available to Quesnel. Elliott said people he talked with at the arena were positive. “I’ve got 99 per cent positive feedback and about 95 per cent saying we need a new arena,” he said. A crowd showed up at the Legion to hear council and CRD directors further elucidate the challenges and positives of each choice so they could make a well-informed decision when the time comes to vote. Residents pack arena open house
Residents came out in big numbers to voice their opinions on the arena replacement project, Tuesday. Thirteen display boards showcased the following information: Four site plans giving Options A, B, C and D for 500, 1,000, 1,600, and 2,000 seat arenas, showing estimated square feet of the building area and projected cost estimates from $10,500,000, $13,000,000, $16,800,000, and $17,500,000
respectively. Eight visuals of arenas in British Columbia showing the year the arena was constructed, construction cost, and seating capacity. The eight arenas were from Parksville, Colwood (Vancouver Island), 100 Mile House, Prince George, Smithers, Salmon Arm, Port Alberni, and Nelson. Residents had asked what can be built using the grants, donations, and reserve funds previously committed. That amount totals approximately $9.9
M if all funding previously committed can be secured for the arena project. To address this question, a final display board provided a comparison of the facility specifications for $10 M and $17 M arena project. These boards remain on display in the arena for residents to look at. Questions ranged from arena specifics like the “size of rooms” and “acoustics” to next steps like “how long will it take to build” and “when can we have a referendum”.
Another important point was clarified at the meeting regarding what residents currently pay and what the increase in taxes for borrowing will be. Residents currently pay approximately $128/$100,000 of assessed residential value (ARV) towards the North Cariboo Parks and Recreation. Approximately $13/$100,000 of that total is currently being transferred to capital reserves for a major recreation infrastructure project. This has sometimes been called ‘the pre-
tax’. If we borrow $7.5 M over 20 years, the approximate cost for that borrowing is $26/$100,000 ARV. If the ‘pre-tax’ is discontinued at the same time, the net impact on taxes to the service will be approximately $13/$100,000 ARV. So, if residents are currently paying approximately $128/$100,000 of ARV towards the North Cariboo Parks and Recreation, after the borrowing of $7.5 M, they will be paying approximately $141/$100,000 of ARV.
Dementia teleconference slated Are your family or friends living with dementia? If so, you may have questions about how to help them. Fortunately, the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. has plenty of answers. And local residents can get its assistance through a pair of free tele–workshops next month. The first, How to Speak Up About Dementia and Make Changes to the System, explains what you can do to make long-lasting social change for people with dementia and their families. Speakers Barbara Lindsay and Rebecca
Morris will provide the tools needed to advocate for a dementia strategy in B.C. – an important plan given the rapidly rising incidence rate of this pressing health issue. The tele-workshop runs on Tuesday, Apr. 1 at 7 p.m. Area residents can also get some practical tips at the second tele-workshop: How to Support a Friend Who Has Dementia or is a Caregiver. It will offer ideas for communicating with a person with dementia, for offering support and providing options on the kind of help the person with dementia, their
caregiver or family might appreciate. The tele-workshop is not aimed at primary caregivers. It runs on Wednesday, Apr. 23 at 2 p.m. Connecting to the sessions is as easy
as visiting momentum.adobeconnect. com/alzheimerbc (enter as a guest) or phoning toll-free 1-866-994-7745, then entering pass code 1122333 when

Protect Your RRSP with Critical Illness Insurance
Advertising and media attention for Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) hits a fever pitch during the months of January and February. There’s a strong focus on educating Canadians about the significant benefits of RRSPs, and many reminders about the contribution deadline. But there’s one very important message that’s often overlooked - how to protect your RRSP in case you’re diagnosed with a critical illness. In fact, the chances of a critical illness affecting you may be greater than you think. According to the Council for Disability Awareness, three out of every 10 people entering the workforce will become disabled before retiring. Unfortunately, for many Canadians struck by a critical illness, RRSP savings become the source of emergency funds. While this may help in recovery, it could result in irreparable damage to retirement plans. RRSP withdrawals have tax consequences, and having to sell your investments earlier than anticipated might not allow them to generate the returns that were expected. What’s more, lost income from time off work to recuperate or care for a loved one could prevent RRSP contributions from being made for a significant period of time. As a result, there may not be as much retirement income as had been expected before the illness was diagnosed. That’s why saving for retirement should be kept apart from planning for emergencies. To help you do that, you may find it’s prudent to purchase critical illness insurance. Similar to term insurance, critical illness insurance covers you for a specified period of time. Policies vary, but coverage typically includes cancer, heart attack, stroke, multiple sclerosis, kidney failure, blindness, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and some other serious ailments. Should you be diagnosed with a covered critical illness during your coverage period, you receive a one-time, tax-free lump-sum payment. You can use the money any way you see fit. That means it could keep you from having to dip into your RRSP and/or it could allow you to keep contributing to your RRSP while you’re recovering from the illness. Critical illness insurance plans are offered by life insurance companies, and are generally available to people up to age 65 and in good health. The full benefit is available even if you recover from the illness. But you must usually live for at least 30 days after an illness is diagnosed before benefits are received.

Shop carefully when buying critical illness insurance. Coverage, exclusions, benefits and prices can vary. Also, you shouldn’t look at critical illness insurance on its own. It should be part of an overall insurance plan that includes disability, long-term care and life insurance. By having adequate coverage, you can help ensure that your family’s financial needs will be met in the event of unexpected circumstances. Your financial advisor can help determine the level of coverage that you need, and recommend a plan to meet your requirements.

Job Fair, April 3 to bring together employers and potential employees ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter As the community begins adjusting to the closure of Canfor operations in town, Quesnel Community Economic Deveopment secured funding (in partnership with other community organizations) from the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation to hold a job fair. About 50 employers have signed up for the event, April 3, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at the Seniors’ Centre. “The key questions we asked each employer was ‘do you have jobs open right now,’” QCEDC’s Amy Reid said. “And the second question was ‘will these jobs allow employees to remain in Quesnel.’” The list of employers setting
up at the Spring Forward Job Fair include mining, banking, retail, unions, food industry and others, along with educational institutions with retraining opportunities. Reid said some of the employers have indicated they would be willing to interview potential employees right at the Job Fair and WorkBC is offering a resume review service. “Community Futures is also attending because they’ve had inquiries about small business development opportunities,” Reid added. “People should attend this job fair not only with their resume in hand but also ready to work.” She also said employers will be armed with information about the company, job descriptions and listings and pre-
pared to discuss opportunities in their various field of operation. “We’re preparing for between 300 – 400 attendees – this job fair is open to the whole community – those unemployed, under-employed or maybe just looking for a change.” Reid said. “Spring Forward Job Fair is a boots on the ground event where employers are looking for employees and people could walk away with a job from this event.” S P R I N G F O R WA R D

f it’s considered wise to ask questions regarding your health, then surely it’s your duty to question and research that of your child’s. But this whole anti-vaccination movement regarding potentially dangerous measles outbreaks is as ridiculous as it is irresponsible. Recent outbreaks of the highlycontagious virus raises questions as to the validity and potential risk of questioning medical advice. According to health authorities immunization numbers are on the decline, some citing personal choice, and religious beliefs. As of last week, more than 200 cases of measles have now been confirmed in the Fraser Valley, with more reported out of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario. Good grief, why? Preventable measures are easy, and free. So what gives? Laziness? Thoughtlessness? Regardless of the excuse, it’s up to guardians to ensure their children are protected. Signs of measles: In addition to the fever, rash and other symptoms, about one in three people with measles will have one or more complications including diarrhea, ear infections (which can lead to permanent hearing loss), pneumonia, encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or seizures. A very rare but fatal disease of the brain and spinal cord can also develop months to years after a measles infection. Measles can also lead to death. There is no treatment, but it can be prevented through immunization. Which leads us to the obvious question: why are people not vaccinating their children? Perhaps if one cannot be trusted to do the right thing, these vaccines should be mandatory. The future of signatures
y 13-year-old son can’t write his name and most of his buddies can’t either. My 10-year-old daughter and most of her friends can. The reason for this shouldn’t have shocked me since the demise of cursive writing has been covered in the news, but I must have missed it, because I was completely surprised when I saw for myself. We were at the bank at the time. I had just opened individual savings accounts for Sam and Daisy, and the kids were asked to sign on the dotted line. Daisy wrote out her name effortlessly, and then it was Sam’s turn. “Don’t print it,” I said correcting him halfway through. “Signatures are supposed to be written.” “I can’t remember how,” he said after attempting to do it. He couldn’t even recall how to script the ‘S.’ Daisy snorted and offered to write his name. I told him to just print it and we’d talk about it later. And talk we did. “Why can Daisy write her name and you can’t?” I asked when we got in the car. “The last time we learned

On A Brighter Note handwriting was in grade three I think,” Sam replied. “We never write in middle school.” According to a couple of 16-year-olds I asked, it’s rare in high school as well. The art of handwriting that I used to practice diligently back in my youth just isn’t considered important like it once was. After my initial disbelief, I started to contemplate the significance of its gradual disintegration in this digital age. Back when I was in school I spent countless hours practicing my penmanship so it would look beautiful and impress the reader. Yet I ended up corresponding with more of a speedy chicken scratch in the end. Over the years it’s developed into a hybrid of writing and printing, and while I can easily read it myself, others have trouble
ago and my students had no idea what it said,” my teacher friend said about her grade 10 class. “This could look bad to a future employer who writes. Kids who know how to read writing might be more marketable.” But many educators argue there are computer programs that can translate basic handwriting and it’s just nostalgia that has some wanting to keep the art of cursive writing alive. “If the kids can communicate by talking, printing and typing, why should they spend precious school time learning handwriting when they’ll barely need it?” another teacher friend asked. “They’re better off learning a second language or something else that benefits their cognition and will become a more useful skill in their future.” It feels kind of sad to see the demise of handwriting happening right before our eyes, but better that than spelling and grammar. We have to pick our battles, and for that, I’d put up a fight. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. She can be contacted at LoriWelbourne.com

deciphering what it says. That has never mattered though. With greeting cards and notes meant for someone else’s eyes, I’d take an extra minute to neatly print so my message would be understood by the recipient. Additional communications have either been spoken or typed. “What about signatures?” my friend asked when I decided not to mind that kids are no longer engaging in cursive writing. “People can’t be printing their signatures.” Well, Sam just did and it wasn’t a problem with the bank. And his friend just did for his passport application and it wasn’t rejected by the government. Regardless, I would like my children to at least know how to sign their own names and have started working with my son on that. Not being able to write beyond a signature might become an issue the odd time, but the inability to read writing seems more problematic since there are older generations still communicating this way. “I wrote something on the board a couple of weeks

Community should be consulted on Youth Centre Editor: I was disappointed to hear that School District 28 will shut down Quesnel’s Comprehensive Youth Centre as of March 31 because this decision was made without community consultation or a replacement program being put in place. I’m fully aware of and empathize with the financial woes of our School Board – the provincial government has underfunded school districts for over a decade
Letters to the Editor
now and very difficult choices have to be made in order for SD 28 to continue to operate within its government mandated balanced budget. However, SD 28’s decision to unilaterally close the Youth Centre without a replacement program is troubling for many reasons. Canfor’s mill closure means Quesnel is entering a period of transition that we all knew was coming but, unfortunately, are neither fully prepared
for nor resourced to deal with. One critical area that will need additional support during this challenging time is youth services; a need that was raised last fall during meetings of the transition team that convened after the Canfor closure was announced. One response to the Canfor job losses being promoted by the Chamber of Commerce and the Quesnel Community Economic Development Corporation is the
concept of people living here and working away. Many Quesnel families are already experiencing the lifestyle challenges of this new work reality. Once again, however, if we wish to avoid some of the negative consequences of this new work-life arrangement then, as a community, we need to provide additional supports for the youth who will be impacted by their parent(s) working away from town for long periods of time.
The Youth Centre was a partnership between the School District and the City and involved the RCMP, MCFD and other youth service providers. If, as the School District maintains, the existing Youth Centre needed a rethink, then it seems to me that given our need to improve and increase services to youth the work should have been done to develop a replacement program before the current model was unilaterally closed by SD
28. The School District is now consulting with the city on alternatives to the Youth Centre. I hope these two elected bodies will expand their consultations to the community as a whole and ensure that the people who ran the Comprehensive Youth Centre and the youth who used that centre are specifically engaged to quickly put in place a replacement program. Local, local, local
QCF is governed, administered and supported locally with annual grants handed out locally ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter There’s no complicated government grant application forms and no long tense waiting periods. Community grants from Quesnel Community Foundation (QCF) are decided right here in the community and are handed out at a local gala. The QCF began with a $50,000 donation from the B.C. Winter Games, held in Quesnel in 2002. The money was set up in an endowment fund with hopes it would grow and interest on the endowment would translate to grants to community groups for worthy projects. The endowment fund has grown. This year, the fund is $1.7 million and QCF is delivering $55,000 to worthy local projects that help the community improve and helped create a better place to live. The amazing growth of the endowment fund is thanks, primarily, to donations made for a variety of reasons, including in honour or in the memory of someone, family legacy funds, corporate and association funds and straightforward donations. As varied as the types of donations made are, QFC is flexible and prepared to work with families and organizations to ensure their donation fits their vision. QCF’s Gala, slated for April 5, is the only major event sponsored by the organization. The gala serves three purposes. First the fundraiser, in part, offsets operating costs ensuring all donations are used to grow the endowment fund. Secondly, to raise awareness of the foundation and what it does. “And finally and possibly the most important purpose is, to celebrate the amazing organizations we have the privilege of helping,” QCF coordinator Cathy Briggs said. The Gala also includes a live auction, silent auction and entertainment by Rockin’ Chair. Included in the live auction are some spectacular items, such as beautiful artwork by Maureen Wheeler and Richard Freeman, an amazing 14k gold coin minted in celebration of the 150th-year anniversary of the Cariboo Gold Rush. This item was donated in memory of amateur historian Andy Motherwell. “There are gift certificates for an awesome array of services, dinners, gift cards and more,” Briggs said. “And definitely a trip of a lifetime, we have a Gold Leaf Tour with Rocky Mountaineer valued at $4,100.” Tickets for the Gala are $50 each and available at Sun Life Financial, Carvers Clothing Company or by calling Briggs, 250747-1739.

Lynn is back in the saddle again
ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter For Lynn Dunkley, it had been 10 long years since she had sat in a saddle, astride a horse. She missed it. She was an avid rider before her crippling accident in 2002. However, when she saw a poster in her doctor’s office for Cariboo Hoofbeats Assisted Activities Program Society (CHAAPS) she wrote down the email address and vowed to contact them. “I really missed riding,” she said. “There’s much more to riding than just being on a horse – there’s a connection with the animal.” In email correspondence with CHAAPS’ Danielle Frothinger, Dunkley knew they had to determine her level of ability. “I believe I was the first adult, in a wheelchair, who sincerely wanted to ride,” she said. For CHAAPS, they needed to figure out the logistics of getting Dunkley on the horse. “They certainly seemed up for the challenge,” she said. With the doctor’s okay and the forms filled out, CHAAPS set about figuring what was needed. CHAAPS volunteers and professionals first devised a platform level with the height of the horse. Then a test mount was constructed using a fixed barrel with a saddle, which they named a chaapaloosa. “I went out to see the setup and was very excited to be there around horses again.” Volunteers then figured out how to move Dunkley from her chair to the horse, with the assistance of and demonstration by, Dunkley’s husband, who showed them the standing pivot transfer method. It’s important to know that Dunkley has body sensations only chest line and higher, so guiding the horse depended strictly on use of the reins. “The first few times
on the horse I had a death grip on the saddle horn,” she said with a laugh. Her first steed was an old rodeo horse named Tommy, who was more than 15 hands high. Dunkley has nothing but praise for the five volunteers who assist her every time she rides. “Without those volunteers I wouldn’t be riding,” she said. And volunteers don’t need to be classic horse people, they can be anyone with a desire to be involved with this very special therapeutic riding program. Dunkley now rides a Percheron draft horse named Porqui whose first career was as a pack horse before being donated to the CHAAPS program. She’s very broad in the back and that has some physical benefits for Dunkley. Being taller than Tommy did present some challenges for Dunkley in getting on the horse. Although the majority of her riding is done in the arena at Pen-Y-Bryn farm, Dunkley has riden outside the arena on Porqui about four times, but her goal is to ride the trails. “So far, each time I ride outside the arena, I gain more confidence but without lower body signals there’s the potential for losing balance and falling, so my instructor, Edie Ferris, is very cautious about next steps.” Dunkley said perhaps the most amazing aspect to her return to riding was
regarding her chronic pain. “I have chronic neurological pain all the time but on the horse I have no pain,” she said. “That’s at least four hours a week painfree.” The long term benefits for Dunkley include she continues to be relatively fit but its the thought of riding again that helps her through some tough times of the year. “Winters are hard, however preparing for riding pushes me out of the dark, depressing mental state the season brings. I find myself getting back to the gym in anticipation of riding again.” On April 29, Dunkley will be back in the saddle again. She couldn’t say enough great things about the dedicated volunteers she’s encountered with the program and encourages anyone interested in helping with the therapeutic riding to consider the upcoming orientation session April 8 at CNC, 6:30 p.m. For information visit the CHAAPS Facebook page or email chaapsinstructor@gmail. com. “I volunteer with CHAAPS, helping with the administration side and the Facebook page,” she said. “Right now we’re on the hunt for volunteers to help with various programs. There’s no horse skills required, just a desire to help with the programs. “It’s very rewarding.”

Sometimes talking and listening is all it takes to make a difference in someone’s life
H
ow often do we hear that you can’t do something just by talking about it? For the most part, that is true. Sundays I experience something different. I go to the Circle of Hope, a talking circle that meets at Season’s House. It is a safe place for people to come together, share a coffee, snacks and talk. Each week we pick a different topic and
someone starts through the the circle off. coming week. We begin by We have a checking in, strict policy of saying how confidentiality. we are doing, “What’s said in then move the circle, stays to our topic. in the circle” Shannon Wyminga This week, is our regular Cariboo Presbyterian Church our leader mantra. led us to talk So I’m not about community – what going to tell you what it means to us; how it was said. However, as can be discouraged or we went around the encouraged; and how circle, we could actually we will build community feel community being
constructed between us. We are a mixed group. There are usually some folks who are clientele at the shelter, along with a few middle-class professional types, other low-income working people or those on social assistance. Some of us are clean and sober, while others who drop in are still working towards that. We pass around a talking stick to show our respect for
who is sharing at the time and we listen and affirm what they share. We have a lot of laughs together and sometimes no shortage of tears for our own griefs or those we shed in sympathy with each other. The very things we talked about which build community were experienced as we shared – listening without judgment, a sense of belonging, caring, encouragement and safety.
I’m thankful for this little group of disparate people who come down to the circle, even when it is -20C to a cold room with hot coffee and warm hearts to be there for one another. Wouldn’t it be great to find this more in the church? Maybe in the church, we need to do more by talking. Shannon Wyminga is a member of the Cariboo Presbyterian Church in Ndazkoh.

Fun League top finishers
March 9, the Legion Sunday Morning Fun League held their year end minibonspiel. We began at 8:30 a.m. with the Quesnel Pipe and Drums piping us onto the ice. After the first rock was thrown by Dave Parsons, we curled three four end games plus the playoff. This year the winner of the A event was the Ken Lewington (second from right) rink with (from left) lead Dennis Baptiste, second Lucy Bryce and third Monica Berg (with sponsor representative Brad Kotzer for the Billy Barker Casino). The winner of the B event was the Darcey Horn (Far right) rink with (from left) third Ed Stolarski, second Irene Durocher and lead Shelly Calihou. This event was won after a tie-breaker, skip stone throw off between Horn and Ken Lewington. The winner of the C event was the Lois Parsons (middle) rink with lead Shannon Johnston (not shown), second Jo Sweeny and third Brad Kotzer. This event also needed a skip stone throwoff tie-breaker between Lois and Terry Berg. Our league is made up from first time curlers to very old-timers, both in experience and age – the oldest being 92 this year. We also incorporated a full team from the Special Olympics this year to round out our 12 team format. They had a great time ending up placing fourth in the B event. This is an open league where teams are picked out of a hat according to position played. We choose to play in this league as it is a FUN league. Look for our registration list to be up in the Legion Lobby on Labour Day. Hope to see you in the fall.

A trio of Two Rivers Boxers travelled to Vernon to represent the province in a tournament pitting B.C. against Alberta. Dan Mott, 22, beat Jake Stuckberry in what coach Matt Tessier called a beautiful, technical fight. There was some confusion with who would be Mott’s opponent and what weight class he would fight in, leaving Mott scrambling to make weight for the lighter, middle weight fight. Mott was back in the ring after over a year off and he was happy to be there. “It was great,” he said. Stuckberry came out early in the fight, pushing Mott, who was taking it slower, a little off guard. But a solid hit from Mott, changed Stuckberry’s game plan. “As soon as I hit him, he didn’t want to be hit anymore,” Mott said. With Mott controlling the pace, he picked Stuckberry apart through the three rounds. Mott dropped him in the second round, earning Stuckberry a standing eight count and rocked him in the third, earning him another standing eight count 10 seconds before the bout ended, leaving Mott unable to lay him out, but firmly in control of the match and the victor by unanimous decision. “He came in methodical, slow – he picked his opponent apart,” Matt Tessier said. Olin Lee, 14, fought a pair of matches, first an exhibition against a neophyte, then a competitive match against
Olin Lee (left) faces off in his exhibition match in Vernon. Ramze Abduraheman, which he dominated. “He was definitely better than his opponent. Olin’s a hell of a good boxer; he’s got a lot of promise,” Matt Tessier said. “The guy was very over matched.” Lee was in control for the duration of the first round and finished his opponent off in the second. “He was fighting well, but I kind of knocked him out on his feet and after that he wasn’t fighting the same,” Lee said. Soon after, the opposing coach threw in the towel, giving Lee the win. Kyle Tessier, 16, fought in the main event Saturday, March 23 against a 19 year old Adam Woods., losing in a split decision after three rounds. “It was a brawl,” Matt Tessier said. “They both went toe-to-toe for three straight rounds.” From the moment Kyle stepped in the ring, he went for broke and Woods responded in kind. “I threw everything I had pretty much,” Kyle said. Kyle kept on throwing it

through the second, but got tripped up towards the end of the second and fell, earning him an eight count, which messed with his head, allowing Woods to come back. In the third, Kyle was losing steam after two rounds of brawling, which allowed Woods to control more of the fight and take the victory. Despite the loss, Kyle was happy with his bout. “It was good,” Kyle said. “Even though I lost the fight, it’s not that important to me right now because it was such a good fight.” Haven Gillmaier,17, also went but they were unable to get a match for him as fighters dropped out at the last minute. The tournament also offered a chance for the club to make some connections, which it sorely needs, to bring more clubs to their shows. “We had a lot of gym’s that will come to our shows, they said,” Matt Tessier said. The club is off for a month to give the boxers a rest but they looking forward to a couple more trip south to shows before the end of the season.

t’s not very often that a player scores five goals in a game and even less likely that they lose, but that’s what happened in the Bear 6-5 win over Fraser River. The see-saw contest featured the Chevy Crew holding several leads but it was an unlikely trigger man for Bear as Steve (Stamkos) Dodge fired a one-timer into the top shelf that proved to be the difference maker. March 30 - April 5, 2014 ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you have a great deal of energy but have no idea where to focus all of it. This could be a good week to visit with friends and family and spend time together.
Gold Rush slush Capping off the year in style, foresters and mill workers from the great logging towns of northern British Columbia zeroed in on Quesnel to fall their enemies, crushing them to a pulp in a frenzy of stone slinging. Sixteen teams, from Kamloops, Merritt, Williams Lake, Quesnel with representatives from P.G. as well, came to challenge the Gold Rush Slush. After a weekend of struggle and throwing stones, champions were crowned, while the losers retired to the upper deck to refresh themselves with cold beverages
and drown their sorrows in poutine. In the A event, the Kamloops Cactus Hacks, comprised of Gord Pratt, Terry Pratt and Pete and Karen Lishman took the big prize. Hewitt's Packers, a local team, won the B event. The Hewitt’s Packers included Ed Hewitt, Brenda Ernst, Don Ernst and Krista Dunleavey. The appropriately named Dream Team, made of cherry picked players from Williams Lake and Quesnel, including Roger Kaleta, Al Baker, Steve Doerksen and Al Collins, took the C event.

Getting up and active with PAL Spring is the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and start getting active. Introducing regular physical activity into your life is an important first step towards better health, a happier mindset, and more. The whole family will benefit from increased activity and getting on the road to a healthier lifestyle. There are so many known benefits to physical activity and an active lifestyle. Among them are a reduced risk of heart disease, premature death and stroke. Being active has also been proven to help improve self-esteem and confidence, help you sleep better, increase your energy and reduce depression, among many other things. Furthermore, it helps maintain functional independence, mobility, and bone health. For many of us, it can be quite daunting to take that first step towards an active lifestyle. And it can be more challenging to start something new without any help. The good news is residents of BC have access to a free physical activity counselling service called the Physical Activity Line (PAL). Through a phone call or online, qualified exercise professionals are available to provide exercise and physical activity advice and help you develop a customized physical activity plan for every member of the family, from children to older adults. When it comes to physical activity, more is better. To achieve the health benefits, it is important to try and progress towards the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, which recommend at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day for children and youth and 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity each week for adults. Adults and older adults should also add muscle- and bone-
strengthening activities that work the major muscle groups at least twice a week to help with balance and prevent falls for those with mobility impairments. Physical activity doesn’t have to mean playing a sport or going to the gym. Playing a family game of tag, going for a swim or taking a walk outside with the family pet or to the store to get groceries count towards the physical activity recommendations. Try out something new; you may find your new favourite activity! In any case, you’re bound to have some fun and feel like a happier and healthier you. The Physical Activity Line is available Monday to Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m in the Lower Mainland, toll-free at 1-877-725-1149. For more information, visit www.physicalactivityline.com or email info@physicalactivity.com.
Other physical activity resources include ParticipACTION (www.participACTION.com) and Healthy Families BC (www.healthyfamiliesbc.ca).

Driveway readers to spend billions to buy a new set of wheels Driveway readers are in the mood to splash out an astonishing $3.6 billion-plus of their hard-earned cash to buy new vehicles this year. This is not some by Keith Morgan wild, optimistic prediction but a solid forecast based on what our readers revealed in a comprehensive survey conducted on behalf of Black Press by Pulse Research, a company with 30 years of experience in asking the right questions of consumers. In a series of wide-ranging interviews, Black Press newspaper readers from all over the province gave Pulse a comprehensive account of their spending plans. Their intention to spend $53.1 million on fish and chips, $45.8 million on tooth whitening, $13.1 million on tattoos or piercing, $9.1 million on pet toys and $1.9 million on tuxedos, raised some smiles. But the auto spending intent grabbed our serious attention. A massive 123,275 households will take vehicles for a spin and sign on the dotted line. A massive 51,895 will park a new car on their driveway, 32,312 will house a sport ute in their garage, while another 28,395 will opt for a truck out front. Most people surveyed knew what kind of wheels they would be looking for and what they were prepared to pay.

Fiesta put the bounce back in Ford
‘‘
Good looking and fun to drive, Ford Fiesta is a miserly fuel user and small car with a lot to offer. Bob McHugh
’’
Ford bounced back into the Canadian small car market in a big way with the return of Fiesta for the 2011 model year. Sleek, modern styling lines, peppy performance, great fuel economy and an attractive price made the new Fiesta was a hit straight out of the gate. Ford claimed it set new industry benchmarks in small car safety and in-car media connectivity. Although it has strong European roots, the North American version of Fiesta is made in Mexico. It comes in a five-door hatchback body style plus a four-door sedan, which was not sold in Europe. The 2011 Fiesta also came in S, SE, SEL and SES trim levels. Power comes from a Ti-VCT 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine with twin variable camshaft timing that can provide up to 120 horsepower and peek torque is 112 ft-lb at 5000 rpm. Fuel consumption is rated at 6.9 L/100 km in the city and 5.1 L/100 km on the highway (which is about 56 mpg) with the
optional automatic. Some extra (passing) power would be nice at higher speeds, but there’s no problem getting a Fiesta up to a freeway cruising speed. It’s surprisingly quick off its mark from a standing start and the mid-range power available is also impressive, for a small engine. The standard transmission is a 5-speed manual but the optional PowerShift six-speed automatic was a completely new (direct-shift) high-efficiency unit. Fundamentally, it is two manual transmissions inside one gearbox with shifts that are electronically activated using a dual-clutch feature, similar to the Audi/VW DSG transmission. Inside, the centre dash layout (audio etc.) was cell phone inspired, with an eye to attracting younger buyers. SES and SEL trim levels also come with steering wheel-mounted audio controls, a multi-function info screen and a unique ambient lighting system allows drivers to choose between seven interior accent lighting colors. Rear legroom is limited, like most in this class, and the seat is a 60/40 split-fold design. Nothing clever here, the seatbacks simply flop forward on top of the seat cushion and allow more cargo space, it’s more a more useful feature in the hatchback. Fiesta comes with seven standard airbags, one more than the norm. The extra driver’s knee airbag helps prevent leg injuries and
better positions the driver to survive a serious frontal impact. It’s also constructed to comply with European pedestrian (impact) safety requirements. Electronic stability control and anti-lock brakes came standard on all trim levels, which is unusual in an ultra cost-conscious market segment. A tilt and telescopic steering wheel is another unexpected standard on all versions of Fiesta. The electric-assist steering system has progressively firmer feel as vehicle speed increases. It also incorporates ‘pulldrift compensation’ feature to help the Fiesta track straighter in strong side winds and another feature, called ‘active nibble control,’ dampens wheel/road vibrations at the steering wheel. While changes for 2012 were minor, they did include an integrated driver’s seat armrest on SE, SEL and SES trim levels. Remote start and keypad entry also became new options on SE, SEL and SES. The top SEL and SES trim levels were replaced with a new Titanium trim package for 2013. Both sedan and hatchback versions of Fiesta got “Top Safety Pick” ratings based of crash test results done by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). On the down side, Consumer Reports rated Fiesta “below average” for reliability. The most troublesome areas appear to be power and audio equipment and the transmission (some software glitches/automatic).
Good looking and fun to drive, Ford Fiesta is a miserly fuel user and small car with a lot to offer. Price Check: 2011 to 2013 Ford Fiesta (March 2014) Year Edition Expect to Pay Today 2011 Hatchback SE $9,000 to $12,000 2012 Hatchback SE $11,000 to $14,000 2013 Hatchback SE $13,000 to $16,000
Prices vary depending on a used vehicle’s condition, mileage, usage and history. A complete mechanical check should always be performed by a reliable auto technician prior to purchase. Safety Recalls: 2010 to 2013 Ford Fiesta: 2013: The Tire and Loading Information Label may contain incorrect tire size and inflation pressure information. Dealers will inspect and install a revised label, if necessary. 2011/2012/2013: The Restraint Control Module may turn OFF the right side air curtain, as well as the front passenger seat-mounted side airbag, when the Occupant Classification System (OCS) senses the right front seat is not occupied. This could increase the risk of injury to a right rear seat occupant in a collision. Dealers will reprogram the Restraint Control Module. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc. ca

Audi sport ute has design appeal ‘‘
The SQ5 is the top of the line Q5; it comes with just a few options and makes an already excellent product oh so much fun.
’’
Zack Spencer
Audi is the fastest growing luxury brand in Canada likely due to excellent styling, impressive interior design and advanced engineering. Audi seems to be hitting the sweet spot in terms of appeal and design that is the envy of many other luxury brands. The Q5 has been a cornerstone of the Audi brand helping couples and families get into an Audi product but retain the functionality that is needed to move people and cargo around in style. Compact SUVs are growing so quickly in popularity that they might overtake compact cars in sales. The Q5 is sold with a turbocharged 4-cylinder, a turbocharged V6 diesel or two supercharged V6 gasoline models that will rip the tarmac off the road. The SQ5 is the top of the line Q5; it comes with just a few options and makes an already excellent product oh so much fun. Looks When I picked up my test SQ5, something looked different. I quickly realized that the 20-inch wheels had been replaced by 19-inch wheels, fitted with winter tires. The stance of the SQ5 looks so much better with 20-inch wheels or the
optional 21-inch wheels for just $1,000 more. The SQ5 has a slightly lower ride than the other Q5 models and comes with splash of grey trim inside the front air intakes, side mirrors, rear air diffuser, plus subtle badging. It could be argued that the SQ5 is a little too subtle for the $57,000 starting price. Inside Audi has been referenced as the high point in interior design. I would agree that the latest products have some wonderful materials and design but this SQ5 is starting to show its age a bit. The screen in the dash is on the small side compared to huge screens from BMWs X3 and domestic brands like the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The lower parts of the dash and doors still have hard plastic bits, where BMW does a better job of covering theirs in soft-touch materials. Even on this top model, Audi still charges a whopping $3,200 for navigation and $1,000 for the Bang & Olufson sound system. In this day of navigation-equipped smartphones, the obscene amounts car companies charge for navi-equipped cars will soon end. On the positive side, the SQ5 is fitted with superb seats that are bolstered perfectly and covered in ultra-soft leather. The seating position is first rate as is outward visibility, cargo space and rear seat room. Drive The base Q5 is fitted with a turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder with 220hp. This model is a nice balance of fuel economy and driving pleasure. The SQ5 comes with a supercharged 3.0L V6 with a heart stopping 347hp. The base car will take a run to 100km/h in 7.1 seconds, the SQ5 in just 5.3 seconds, almost a full
2 seconds quicker. What is the most impressive part of the SQ5 is just how good it is to drive in any situation, thanks to the standard Audi Drive Select system. Being able to change the sensitivity of the steering, throttle response, transmission changes and even the sound of the engine, makes this SQ5 a pleasure in stop and go driving or full throttle passing on the highway. I found the comfort setting to be best in the city and the dynamic setting for open road cruising. The ride is firm and very responsive without being too choppy and combined with the potent engine can be placed into corners and is sucked to the pavement thanks to a sophisticated Quattro AWD system. Verdict The Q5 is a solid choice for anyone looking for a premium compact SUV.
The base 4-cylinder model starts at $40,900 and is the best seller. This SQ5 is the powerhouse version and does everything so well, point it where you want to go and it will get the driver there with a smile on their face. What might be the best of both worlds in the 3.0L turbocharged diesel Q5 with 428 lb.-ft. of thunderous torque that makes it very quick, but also more fuel-efficient, or the detuned 3.0L supercharged V6 with 272hp. zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca

Faster than a speeding bullet . . . almost The McLaren 650S Coupe made its North American debut this week at the Vancouver International Auto Show. The British-made super car can accelerate from zero to 200km/h in just 8.4 seconds. The 4-litre, twin turbo V8, boasts a surprisingly good fuel consumption rate of 11.7 L/100K. Mind you, perform a few burnouts and you will be visiting the gas pumps with more frequency. At press time, there was no sticker price available other than the European price, which is in excess of $350,000. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
Confessions of a Curber
Misty-eyed memories of my first truck
‘‘
It was worth every penny of the $12,000 I put into it. Ian Harwood
’’
I can remember buying my first truck in 1986 like it was yesterday. It had to be a specific make
and model: I was looking for. A Toyota 4x4 pick-up, black in color and it had to be in good shape. I wanted it to be bone stock with as little mileage as possible. I found one in the paper that was on the lot at a dealership in Surrey. Quickly I called them to inquire and they said they had a couple of people with deals written up, but it didn’t look like they were going to go through, so if I wanted it I had better get down there right away (Naive at that age to fall for and old trick like this). I had to get a ride from
a friend and I remember it was snowing so it was slow getting there. When I arrived it was running and they were anxious for me to drive it. I took it around the block and parked it in a vacant lot, hopped out and started to inspect it. I immediately noticed rust and some body damage. Clearing the snow off inside the truck box, I could see more damage. It looked like someone had dropped a bowling ball into it from about a high ledge. I could smell antifreeze and noticed some oil leaks. I headed back to the
dealership disappointed. The salesman was there to greet me. He asked if I had any concerns and I started to point out the obvious. He quickly dismissed them as cosmetic and said do you want to write a deal on it because he has people in the showroom wanting to buy it. I told him I was not interested. On the ride home, I thought how quickly I had to grow up and look at everything as if someone was going to take advantage of me, sad reality. The next day I picked continued on page B19
It’s only been a month, but I can see myself selling cars for a long, long time. I feel like a new man. One evening, I was in line at the superstore. An elderly gentleman saw my shopping cart. I had a new digital tire gauge that I was going to give to my next buyer. Turns out he was looking for a used car as he’d recently given his car to his grandson. He just needed something basic. “This is your lucky day!” I told him. The old fellow was around my father-in-law’s age – close to 80. He walked with a cane and had two ear pieces. I was practically shouting to him. What an easy sale. I decided to give him a ride and show him the car. He went on to tell me about his young granddaughter, too. At any rate, we got to the car – it was a base model with an automatic transmission. “It’s perfect for you, sir!” I exclaimed. He got in and sat at the wheel. His face lit up right away. I could tell that he’d been a car enthusiast in his younger days. “Where’d you get this car, son?” he asked me. “It’s my dad’s old car – he passed away and I

just can’t keep it anymore,” I lied. In reality, I imported the car from Washington. It came with documents that mentioned New York State. The title was clean, so I assumed it was in good condition. I priced the vehicle quite high – well over its value. But he didn’t know, and he didn’t ask any more questions. I told him I had another buyer interested (another lie), and that he had to make a decision right away. With no hesitation, he got a bank draft and I gave him the keys. Like I promised, I threw in the new tire gauge. Marty gave me a wink and slowly drove off. Another foolish customer, I thought. No history report to keep me on my toes. And worse, he needs to get it inspected, registered and insured within 30 days - I didn’t bother. I just got my buddy in Bellingham to help me get it across. That evening, I took out the papers I’d received with the car. I decided to go over them more thoroughly. I guess I was a bit bored. Turns out, the vehicle had been registered in four U.S. states. Somewhere along the line, the rebuild* status was dropped. Probably intentionally. The inspection and ICBC will catch that. And who knows if the odometer is right? At least it’s no longer mine. *Rebuild – A vehicle written off as a total loss by an insurance company, then rebuilt and certified for use. This term does not describe a vehicle that has a new or repaired motor, transmission or other major part. Rebuilds offer savings when repaired well, but a buyer has a right to know it was rebuilt. But this buyer didn’t and Walt walked away with the cash.

up the latest copy of Truck Trader and spotted the exact make and model I was looking for. I bought the 1983 edition for $9,000 from a family that only used it once a week to drive to Abbotsford and back to Coquitlam for supplies. It was perfect; funny how God puts things in your path and everything works out in the end. A week later I started to work on it. I acquired some used 33 inch tires and installed a 4” lift kit. I drove that truck every night after work to show it off. I washed it so many times I thought the paint was going to come off. A year had past and I purchased many more items for the truck. A major car show was coming up soon and I decided I would put it in the back of the shop and work on it so I could enter it into the show. Giving up my truck for a month was tough and I had to make a few sacrifices to get around. My first car show was a hit. I came in second place and I was determined the following year I would be back with something they have never seen before. I poured most of my paychecks into my truck and took it off the road for two months to prepare for its transformation. I called up the owner of Interco Tire and asked about some Supper Swamper tires. He said he had a set of 44x18.5x15 tires in his office that nobody has seen before. At that time the largest they made were 42”. I told him to send them to me I would figure out what I had to do to fit them under the truck. When they came in they looked big. So big I was getting worried. The custom leaf springs came back from the spring shop and I knew my calculations were correct. With all the multiple shocks in place, chassis freshly painted, motor work done, a lower gears installed it was ready for the tires. I cleared away the debris pile that accumulated around my truck. Placed the floor jack under the rear axle and started to jack it up. With the rear tires on and clearing the fenders it was time to move to the front. When I started to lift the front I noticed how high the hood was getting, at that point I knew I had built a monster. With all the tires in place I slowly drove it out of the shop. The sun gleaming down on the freshly polished paint and the smell of paint burning off the exhaust system still sticks in my mind. Outside it looked like a beast; people were slowing down to take a look. The show was a week later and I came home with first place. Mission accomplished. It was worth every penny of the $12,000 I put into it. Then I sold it for $15,500 in 1990 so that I could afford to get married . . . need I say any more? Tell me your truck story and please send pictures.
