Fraser Downs the only possible recipient of Newton’s 150-slot licence, mayor says
Pulled slot machines leave questions Kevin Diakiw Black Press
The fate of a Newton strip mall remains unknown after the provincial lottery agency announced it will pull the plug on 150 slot machines there in mid-May. However, Fraser Downs is one possible location for those one-armed bandits, according to Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts. Last week, the BC Lottery Corporation (BCLC) decided it will remove the slots from the Newton Country Bingo Hall at 7093 King George Blvd., saying there was no
longer a business case to keep them there. It came on the heels of a City of Surrey initiative to have them removed, citing blown construction deadlines, a claim that BCLC and Gateway Casinos and Entertainment Ltd. denied. With the slots out of the picture, a planned redevelopment of the site worth more than $20 million is on hold, perhaps permanently. Gateway, which owns the property, says its business case is much different without the gaming component. And while BCLC has pulled the slots,

Gateway still holds the provincial licence to run 150 slot machines. The company will be looking for a place to activate those. Asked if a spot in Surrey or the surrounding area is being considered, Gateway spokesperson Tanya Gabara said it’s far too early to tell. “Obviously now we have to reevaluate what we’re going to do moving forward,” Gabara said, adding a move is likely in the offing. However, Watts said Wednesday that the only place she’d consider adding the slots right now would be to Fraser Downs Race-
track and Casino, at 17755 60 Ave. She said she mentioned to Gateway three weeks ago that Fraser Downs was a viable alternative. “(Fraser Downs) is still under-utilized, and it’s still under-built,” Watts said. “If there’s any opportunity in the city, that would be an opportunity that would be reviewed.” She said the fact Great Canadian Casino already owns the casino there is not an impediment. “If you look at Las Vegas, there are casinos that co-exist with one another,” Watts said. i see page 4

Its stance was justified while the U.S. was taking a firm stand on drugs, because of the vast interconnection between the two countries, but that isn’t the situation any longer. While the U.S. federal government continues to prosecute marijuana cases, there, product is 100 per cent legal in Washington and Colorado (except on federal property), and it seems that has reduced the number of problems in relation to the drug. Each state is also collecting revenue from sale of the drug, which is sold under strict conditions, as is the case with alcohol. In Colorado’s case, it has already benefited from additional tourism due to the legalization of marijuana. The federal government might be wiser to take a serious look at decriminalizing all marijuana use, and seeing if there is wisdom in making it a legal product, with sales restricted to adults. If it worked with provincial and local governments on this issue, there could be a vast reduction in the number of grow-ops in homes, which would be a boost for public safety. It almost certainly would also lead to a reduction in crime, which would be a break for police and the taxpayers who fund them. Frank Bucholtz writes Thursdays for the Peace Arch News. Don’t starve universities to fund blue-collar training: SFU president
Petter cautions province on trades focus Jeff Nagel Black Press
Simon Fraser University president Andrew Petter is cautioning the province against a major shift in advanced education budget dollars from universities to trades training. Petter spoke to members of the Surrey Board of Trade on Tuesday, arguing skills shortages are actually forecast to be more acute for college- and university-trained workers in the years ahead than in trades. “We’re in a highly competitive, global knowledge-based economy,” Petter said. “Our capacity to exploit our natural resource base depends upon having not only skilled labourers, but having the kinds of engineers, entrepreneurs, managers and business peo-
ple to market and deliver those resources in a way that exacts the maximum value.” He’s the latest university administrator to express trepidation with the government’s focus on trades as it aims to launch a massive liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry. “We should not be engaged in a zero sum kind of battle for dollars,” Petter said in an interview after his speech. Petter said he emerged from a meeting with advanced education Minister Amrik Virk hopeful that the province understands more student seats are needed in all sectors. He said the province’s expected labour shortage in skilled trades workers is “relatively small” compared to the much larger shortage of people with college and univer-
sity credentials. training more people in energy sys“Because there’s a certain immetems engineering is directly related diacy and tangibility around the to increasing the economic future trades issue there’s a danger that we of Surrey,” said Petter. lose sight of the fact that we’re going However, Surrey Board of Trade to need the full spectrum of postCEO Anita Huberman said she is secondary graduates.” worried the province’s plan for a Petter outlined plans to pursue an balanced budget will mean insuffiup-to-$300-million capital expancient education dollars to reach the sion of SFU’s Surrey campus in the university’s capacity or introduce Andrew Petter burgeoning city centre over the next the new programs. Routine patrol leads to arrests in vandalism spree
City pays gratitude to bylaw officers Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter
A pair of White Rock bylaw officers who helped nab a crime suspect were among three men recognized by council Monday for going “above and beyond” the call of duty. “We owe them a great deal of gratitude,” Mayor Wayne Baldwin told attendees of Harim Estrada and Harmail Gill, following a report by financial services director Sandra Kurylo. Kurylo told council that Estrada and Gill were conducting routine parking-enforcement patrols near Peace Arch Hospital on an evening in February when they came across a pair of individuals breaking into a parking meter. There had been dozens of area meters damaged over the course of the previous weeks, and the issue was one police had been working “quite hard” to address, Kurylo said. Shortly before the incident of note, the duo had advised police of another vandalized
meter, so when they came across the crime in progress, they decided to act. “They got out of their van and apprehended the individuals before the RCMP got there,” Kurylo said. It was “a very positive result” for the city, she said. “The vandalism has stopped.” City manager Dan Bottrill told Peace Arch News in February that 45 meters were damaged over a five-week period beginning Jan. 5. Following the apprehension, police announced charges of mischief under $5,000 and theft under $5,000 against a South Surrey man in connection with the damage. According to court records, William Furugori pleaded guilty to the mischief charge on March 5, and was sentenced to one day in jail and one year probation. Furugori was also ordered to pay $427 restitution.
Senior cited Council also recognized senior Clive Griffiths, the outgoing chair of Kent Street Activity Centre’s executive committee. In thanking Griffiths for his seven years at the committee’s helm, Baldwin said he had an “enviable record.” He cited upgrades to the centre’s kitchen and the addition of an elevator as among work completed under Griffiths’ watch. In addition, Griffiths was key in budgeting, planning and liaising for the centre. “You carried that off with style and panache,” Baldwin said. “It’s a shame to be losing you. You’ve left shoes that are going to be hard to fill.” Griffiths shared the credit with fellow committee members. “I think it’s an indication of how easy the job was (that) I had the support of all these people and their confidence,” he said. “It was a pleasure.”
The former president of the Surrey-White Rock constituency of the provincial NDP said former premier Mike Harcourt’s widely publicized disenchantment with the party is a “warning” that should be heeded by the executive and caucus. “It’s a sad thing that Mike has chosen not to renew his membership – he’s a very good man and he was a tremendous premier,” said Bill Piket, who is also publicity chair for the constituency. “I think he has legitimate concerns. It’s a signal that the party has got to smarten up and not be complacent. There’s a very strong need for a viable alternative government – there’s a major amount of dissatisfaction with the BC Liberal government.” Harcourt gave several interviews this week in which he revealed he had let his party membership lapse and expressed his disappointment with the NDP’s performance in the 2013 election. Piket said the local constituency has not endorsed a candidate for the race to succeed Dix. “Our membership pretty much make up their own minds,” he said. Whatever the results of the NDP leadership race – to be revealed Sept. 28 – the general public is “pretty unhappy,” Piket said. “I don’t think the results of last year’s election were a strong vote of confidence in the BC Liberals – I think it was a lack of confidence in the NDP as an alternative.” Piket said it is evident the BC Liberals are not cutting fat, but “needed services,” as a result of creating a “structural deficit” in 2001. “When (then-premier) Gordon Campbell gave the big breaks to the corporations he said the money would come back in the form of job creation – but we haven’t seen it.” On a local level provincial cutbacks can be seen in things like overcrowding at Earl Marriott Secondary and Peace Arch Hospital, Piket said.

‘Victim’ leads police to fire suspect i from page 1 after 8 p.m. April 1. It apparently followed an argument. “(The caller) is suspected of setting the neighbouring barn on fire. He left the area where they were arguing and got onto a neighbouring farm… and a few minutes later, the fire department received a report of a farm building on fire at that location.” Paquet said two Surrey men, aged 42 and 48 years old, suffered minor injuries “consistent with having been hit with gasoline” in
the assault. All parties involved in the incident are known to each other, he noted. An earlier fire in the Port Kells area Monday morning obliterated a barn in the 18600-block of 88 Avenue that was reportedly housing a medical-marijuana grow operation. It filled the skies with black smoke that could be seen from as far away as Burnaby. Paquet said that while that fire is suspicious, “examination of the scene failed to locate any evidence to support an arson inves-
tigation at this point.” “The challenge here is that most of the building and its contents were destroyed or heavily damaged in the fire,” he said. Finally, in White Rock Tuesday morning, residents of a Thrift Avenue condo complex were temporarily evacuated due to an appliance fire. According to firefighters, it originated from a stove and resulted in minor damage. – with files from Sarah Massah & Monique Tamminga

No byelection The City of White Rock will not hold a byelection to replace a councillor who died last month. On recommendation of city clerk Tracey Arthur, council voted unanimously Monday to authorize a council of six members to continue until the Nov. 15 general election and amend the deputy-mayor rotation to address the vacancy created by Larry Robinson’s death. It was an agenda item that “fills me with sadness,” Mayor Wayne Baldwin said. Robinson succumbed to cancer on March 15. Canada does not endorse the use of marijuana, but the courts have required reasonable access to a legal source of marijuana for medical purposes.” Regulators will get data from licensed producers on how much pot each doctor prescribes to patients. Youth are especially susceptible to potential risks from marijuana use, according to Health Canada, which lists damage to mental function and mental health, including psychosis and schizophrenia. Sensible BC’s Dana Larsen said he welcomed Ottawa’s move to provide more information on marijuana to doctors and nurses, but remained sharply critical of the planned shift to commercial production. “Minister Ambrose still has not addressed the fact that the new regulations are going to price thousands of patients out of the market for their medicine,” he said. Various municipalities opposed the outgoing system of letting users grow their own pot or have other designated growers do it for them. The injunction doesn’t stop the launch of new commercial pot producers, but it may reduce the initial size of their market if many users don’t have to buy from them.

Rising rates adding to seniors’ burden
M
ost retired seniors live on a fixed income. According to Employment and Social Development Canada, the median retirement income for women and men aged 65 and older in 2011 was $20,200 and $30,100, respectively. As well, at least 90 per cent of seniors rely on Canadian Pension Plan payments and old-agesecurity payments. These payments are adjusted annually according to the Consumer Price Index. This seems fair and reasonable. Essentially, if the price of goods goes up, so, too, does the amount received from CPP and OAS. Many private pension funds do the same thing. Since 2002, with the exception of 2011, the CPI in Canada has hovered around two per cent or lower. In 2011 the CPI averaged 2.9 per cent, whereas in 2009 the CPI averaged 0.3 per cent. Effective this week, the BC Liberal government – in an attempt to balance the budget – decided not only to cut ferry service and increase fares by four per cent, but have also decided to get rid of free travel for seniors. For example, seniors must now pay $8.15 for one-way travel, Monday to Thursday, between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay. Previously, seniors could hop the ferries on foot free of charge during that time period. It’s an unfair burden put to seniors here, some of whom are frequent travellers to visit Vancouver Island-based family or – if they live on Vancouver Island – coming this direction for medical appointments and the like. Adding additional cost to these trips will only serve to further isolate fixed-income seniors who may have to curtail future outings. To add insult to injury, BC Hydro is raising its rates nine per cent this year and is forecasting an increase of 28 per cent over the next five years. These increases are tough enough for the average working family to endure, let alone our province’s seniors who are no longer in the workforce. These latest increases are far beyond the CPI, such that with every increase, never mind in the price of food, the price of insurance, of everything, seniors on a fixed income continue to lose ground.

Our room began to feel like a jail cell we would never escape and I missed my daughter like crazy, as she was staying with my parents. But still, we knew we were in the best possible place. My physician friend explained that RSV is something seen quite often in babies this time of year, adding that Elliot would more than likely be fine in such good care. And whenever I padded through the hall to the washroom, I glanced into the open doors of other rooms and was increasingly grateful that it was just RSV we were dealing with. I learned a few other things, too, such as not to feel like I’m wasting anyone’s time by taking a new baby to see a doctor. From now on, I’ll place hand washing on the same pedestal of importance as the flu shot. And caring for kids really does take a village — support from family and friends is invaluable, from grandparents who babysit, to a friend taking the time for a social visit with a hot cup of tea. There’s also nothing like hearing “You’re my best mom ever” from a toddler to make you feel better. And I’ll forever be thankful for wireless babies. They’re that much easier to snuggle, after all. Concerns tower over project Editor: Re: Business group touts arts towers, March 18. I agree with Surrey Board of Trade CEO Anita Huberman that “artists and cultural spaces are powerful agents of change in the community.” Do the artists support the development as it is, or just the cultural space? Can our infrastructure support a 27-floor highrise development? Can our hospital or schools cope with the extra population? Do we have adequate water? Will South Surrey become like Whalley? I feel all these concerns should be addressed before council considers a development of this magnitude. Mary Mikelson, Surrey
GMO foods no concern Editor: Re: Petition takes on GMOs, April 1. Canadians have access to one of the safest and most abundant food supplies in the world, thanks in part to plant biotechnology. All new crops undergo extensive safety reviews by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Health Canada to ensure they are safe for people, animals and the environment. When it comes to labelling, Canada currently labels based on nutrition and safety. To label GM (genetically modifies) foods would imply there is a safety concern where there is none. Consumers already have the choice to purchase non-GM foods through organic labeling. Trillions of meals containing ingredients from GM crops have been consumed without a single substantiated case of any adverse health impacts. As we approach 20 years of GM foods in the marketplace, I encourage consumers to never settle for anything less than science-based information on foods grown with GM technology. Ted Menzies, CropLife Canada
is hiding somewhere on it. I find this odd because she does most of the spending. My wife and I made the decision to share a bank account without thinking about it. It just happened. Yet my wife’s sisters have separate bank accounts. Some of their expenses are kept secret from their husbands, and some of their husbands’ expenses are kept secret from them. In my way of thinking, it’s good for couples to budget together. When the left hand in a marriage is not aware of what the right hand is doing, there can be problems. Housing Minister Rich Coleman says there was no criminal activity at Vancouver’s Portland House Society, where public funds were used for family vacations, business class tickets, limos and spas. In other words, all’s good unless the public knows. The NDP’s caucus chair, Shane Simpson, defended his political colleague by saying that “Jenny has told us that she is not aware of other trips, and I accept that.” Well, Jenny’s proven that she is not aware of all that much. B.C. legislature speaker Linda Reid also claims to be unaware of a lot of things. After she flew her husband
to South Africa and put him up in nice digs on the taxpayer’s dime, she declared that she’s not aware of any other such trips for her husband. She added, “If this caused anyone any consternation, I sincerely apologize”. As the son of a former provincial cabinet minister, I can recall being driven to hockey games and ski hills by my dad’s chauffeur. I know politicians still get the government to pay for daily meals for themselves and ‘business’ friends. Taxpayers have to stop repeat offenders by not re-electing them. We have to be vigilant about what people are spending – starting with our spouses. Jim McMurtry, Surrey Q Speaker of the B.C. legislature Linda Reid claims that $75,000 of taxpayer funds was money wellspent on security upgrades in her constituency office and she is proud of spending another $48,400 on state-of-the-art technology for her spot in the legislative chamber. And if that isn’t enough, how about a nice, all-expenses-paid holiday for her and her husband to South Africa? I’m curious, Linda, what is your interpretation of your government’s catchy slogan “Families First”? Did
you know that children all over this province show up each day at school not having had breakfast and with no prospect of lunch? They’re part of families, Linda. Did it not occur to you that perhaps an undernourished child should come first over your personal comforts? And are we to understand, that every time there is a change in Speaker, we will have to shell out another $75,000 to renovate their constituency office? When there is a change in Speaker – and I truly hope that is very soon – why doesn’t your successor move into your current office where the investment has already been made? Of course, it will mean he/ she will have the inconvenience of a commute, just like hard-working families everywhere. Why don’t you spend the money that you take from us in the form of taxes on families first and defer these other things on your wish list until your government delivers the bonanza that they claim will be coming from LNG? I suggest, Linda, that you book an appointment with Christy Clark and ask her to clarify exactly what she means by ‘Families First’. Marc Burchell, Surrey
Editor: MLA Jenny Kwan didn’t ask her husband where the money came from to go on family vacations to Disneyland, the U.K. and Vienna. She thought he was paying for the trips personally. They say there are two types of people in this world: those who like cats and those who like dogs. But I think there are married people who share a bank account and married people who don’t. I wish my wife had such blind trust in my spending, but she looks over our Visa bill as though Waldo

Velma Bartel arrived in White Rock by train in 1953 and continues to cherish the tracks and trains that use them.
An ode to the waterfront tracks Editor: My thoughts on our wonderful ‘city by the sea’ – on our train and the tracks more specifically. And though my words are not elegant, I’m weary of all the complaints and rants about our train and its tracks. It was here before us, and that is fact. The Train Whenever I hear that whistle blow, That is when for sure I know, It is the sound of our seaside train, Coming down the tracks again. I was a young girl from Idaho, And it was to White Rock I came. It is a very long way by train, And here for many years I have remained. So many things have changed,
But the pier, the rock, the ocean and the tracks are much the same. Some people want to remove the tracks and trains, But then our city would not be the same. Why not make the train a people mover? Coming from Seattle and Vancouver, like it did once before, Bringing out-of-towners to our beautiful shore! Whenever I hear that whistle blow, I am content to know I was a part of those days so long ago. Days of frolic and fun at the shore. Days I will remember forever more. I came to White Rock in March of 1953 by train from Bonners Ferry, Idaho. I was seven years old. Velma (Weir) Bartel, Surrey

Inching towards record high
Gas prices nearing $1.50 Jeff Nagel Black Press
The onset of spring has pushed up both tulips and gasoline prices. And industry watchers expect Metro Vancouver pump prices to close in on their all-time record of about $1.50 per litre of regular gas in the weeks ahead. Average prices were around $1.44 per litre Tuesday, up more than 15 per cent from the mid-December low of around $1.24.
Jason Toews, founder of the gasbuddy.com website, expects prices will rise further – up to a point. “I don’t think we’re going to see record level prices,” Toews said. “I think there’s going to be a lot of resistance at $1.50. It’s a psychological barrier. People really start changing their driving habits and it starts having an impact on demand.” Metro Vancouver i see page 11

wo former South Surrey students have touched down in London and will fly by the seat of their pants – and a case of energy drinks – as they make their way to Berlin. Semiahmoo Secondary grad Ron Denischuk, 20, has teamed up with Elgin Park Secondary grad David Maybury, 20, and friend Conner Moran, 22, to take on the Red Bull Can You Make It Challenge after reading about it on the energy drink company’s Facebook page. The three UBC students – dubbed Salmon Force 5 – are among three Canadian university teams and 100 teams from around the world participating in the competition, with the winners getting the opportunity to attend any Red Bull event around the world. The Phi Gamma Delta fraternity friends won the coveted spot after Moran made the winning oneminute audition video (to view the video visit https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=xXfqVUTz4iA ) The teams were all flown to England on Wednesday and will begin the race Friday. They have one week to make the journey to Germany with a case of Red Bull as their only currency to barter for food, accommodation i see page 14

‘Crazy’ idea to win big i from page 13 and transportation. On the team’s website, the friends said they plan to drink three of the energy drinks, then empty the remaining cans and sell the aluminum to a scrap dealer for approximately .37 cents. The money will then be used to buy a small amount of pistachios to play a miniature ball and cup game. “With our expert close-up magic skills, and incredible sleight of hand, we will wager for food, shelter and transportation as we see fit. It may seem crazy, but crazy is what gets you across Europe without any money,” the team explains on its webpage. “I thought it would be a really cool experience. We’d never been there, so it would be a cool way to travel,” Denischuk told Peace Arch News Tuesday. The self-proclaimed “extreme adventurer” added that the trio has no definite strategy for winning the competition – which will include passing six checkpoints with challenges for them to complete at each stop. “We’re going to rely on hitchhiking, trains and buses,” Denischuk said. “We’ll figure out what our options are and then kind of have to take it from there. “It’s going to be a pretty challenging experience but it’s going to be a lot of fun. And as far as winning, we’ve already won quite a bit by getting to take part in it.” By liking the team’s page (www. redbullcanyoumakeit. com/teams/salmonforce-5/67/details/), Salmon Force 5 can earn extra points.

Friends and family will come together in White Rock to honour the life of one of the Peninsula’s veterans this week. William (Bill) Sexsmith, 75, passed away suddenly March 14. The Navy veteran – who served during the Vietnam War – had more than 45 years of service under his belt, including a tour with the United Nation in 1979 and extensive work with the Royal Canadian Legion, of which he was a life member. A service will be held for Sexsmith at the Anglican Church of the Holy Trinity, 15115 Roper Ave., April 4 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the B.C. Cancer Society in his memory. In May 2013, Sexsmith was interviewed by the Peace Arch News with friend and fellow decorated veteran Walter (Wally) Uden, 91, who passed away on Feb. 28. As the representative for the White Rock Legion Branch 8, Sexsmith had submitted Uden’s story as a British soldier fighting on the beaches of Normandy during the Second World War. Uden’s life and legacy was honoured March 30 at the Royal Canadian Legion.

Classic Broadway musical comes to Earl Marriott Secondary

he show’s title is How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying – but don’t let that fool you. Earl Marriott Secondary’s drama and music departments have been putting in many long hours to bring the classic 1961 Broadway musical – complete with score by Frank Loesser, and book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock and Willie Gilbert – to the stage of the school’s Wheelhouse Theatre this month. A cast of some 35 student actors, directed by drama department head Candace Radcliffe – with vocal direction by Bev Schellenberg and choreography by Carol Seitz – plus a full orchestra directed by band teacher Rodger Owens, a stage crew managed by Grade 12 Riley Leiper and an army of behind-the-scenes costumers and set builders, have laboured over the show for months, all leading up to a run April 15-19 and April 23-26 (7:30 p.m. performances, no show on Good Friday, April 18) at the school, 15751 16 Ave. “Bev deserves huge credit for her great work as our vocal director – she is an unsung, pardon the pun, hero,” Radcliffe said. “Rodger, honestly, is a genius with this difficult score – the orchestra sounds amazing – and Carol is an incredible choreographer. And all the kids are so great and so sweet – there’s not a diva among them.” Set in the offices of the mythical World Wide Wicket Company, circa 1963, How To Succeed... would seem to have everything going for it – and style to burn. Bright, appealing lead and supporting performances combine with scads of ultra-cool ‘Mad Men’era threads, a clever, tuneful score (“I Believe In You”, “A Secretary Is Not A Toy”) and a satirical script that still, Radcliffe said, packs plenty of laughs. Armed with the How-To guide of the title, go-getter J. Pierrepoint Finch (Travis Clifford) begins his manipulative rise up the corporate ladder from window washer

acter working his way through the corporate workplace, getting where he wants to be without trying,” Clifford said. “He’s a fun character to play – and it’s also funny that the book directly narrates what is happening to him in each scene.” While his obsession with getting ahead in the business world makes him blind to the romantic aspirations of Rosemary, disaster forces Finch away from the book’s advice and into a position of being “more sincere,” he said. Lawson said he’s also enjoying playing “whiny” company man Bud Frump, bound and determined to crush the threatening attempts of Finch to shake up the status quo. “It’s a very big, cartoony character,” he said. “That kind of comedy comes naturally to me.” Tickets ($16, $14 seniors, $12 students) are on sale at 604-531-8354, ext. 171.

Given the glossy perfection that old-school Hollywood strove for in its product – particularly in the late 1930s – it’s sometimes hard today to remember the movies of the time were often the result of decidedly unglamourous toil and sweat. Legendary tales of the seamier side of the Dream Factory have persisted in the iconoclastic memoirs of insiders, however – and it’s on this kind of account that Ron Hutchinson based his play Moonlight and Magnolias, current offering of the White Rock Players Club, directed by Ryan Mooney (until April 19 at Coast Capital Playhouse, 1532 Johnston Rd). It’s the playwrights’s witty imagining of the marathon rewriting session that produced the final shooting script of the 1939 classic Gone With The Wind. Hutchinson is a movie insider himself – a veteran scriptwriter – and that lends added veracity to his portrait. It’s part absurd farce, part dark meditation on the bizarre self-mythologizing nature of the movie business. Celebrated as the acme of ante-bellum romance (as in the ‘moonlight and magnolias’ of the title) Gone With The Wind – as depicted by Hutchinson – was also a colossal gamble by mogul David O. Selznick; an attempt to outdo his peers by lensing Margaret Mitchell’s famous novel. The hottest popular read of the late ’30s – Selznick was able to reap publicity gold for months from a search for the actress to play tempestuous heroine Scarlett O’Hara, before choosing Vivien Leigh – it’s also a tome of epic, virtually unfilmable, proportions. Hutchinson’s pithy comedy of desperation opens just as the enterprise is turning into an elaborate train wreck.

Fred Partridge, Paul Ferancik and Ryan Johnston begin their marathon collaboration in Moonlight and Magnolias. Three weeks into production – with an expensive roster of stars including Clark Gable and Leslie Howard on payroll – Selznick (Fred Partridge) must face reality. The original script is unworkable and the director he hired – George Cukor – is not forceful enough to drag the production back on track. The tough-minded director he needs for the project, Victor Fleming (Ryan Johnston), is still busy helming the Wizard of Oz for MGM, but the determined Selznick schemes him an early release from that assignment. The best script doctor in Hollywood – the fiercely liberal Jewish activist Ben Hecht (Paul Ferancik) – is available, but can commit only five days to the project. Even worse, he hasn’t even read the book, and harbours deep suspicions about a project that seems devoted to celebrating a Southern ‘culture’ that sought to maintain slavery. Undaunted, Selznick locks himself, Fleming and Hecht in his office for five days with his putupon secretary Miss Poppenghul (Laine Henderson) as their only lifeline to the outside world – and only peanuts and bananas
(Selznick considers them “brain food”) as sustenance. Cajoling Fleming into joining him, he proceeds to act out the novel, scene by scene, for the bemused – and furiously typing – Hecht. It’s all conjecture, but the namedropping of Hutchinson’s conversational script lends a certain verisimilitude. Everyone knows that the script was ultimately finished, but Moonlight and Magnolias is more about the journey than the result. Gone With The Wind went on to become one of the most beloved films of all time, of course, and certainly a highwater mark for a type of Hollywood movie-making no longer seen. Costume design for Moonlight and Magnolias is by Laura McKenzie, with set by Tim Driscoll and props by Naomi Mitchell and Rosemary Schuster. Performances are at 8 p.m. with a 2:30 p.m. matinee Sunday, April 13. For tickets ($18, $16 students, seniors and Coast Capital Savings members), call 604-5367535, or visit www.whiterockplayers.ca

Stomach Acid Wearing You Down? Prescription antacids are great for short-term relief of acid reflux, but blocking stomach acid production every single day has long-term risks for iron and B12 deficiency and osteoporosis – calcium, iron, and other nutrients require an acidic environment for optimal absorption. Exhibit at Kwantlen
Local artists display work Semiahmoo Peninsula artists Roxanne Charles and Tessa Nickel are among 13 featured in the exhibit NinetySeven Days, April 11 to 13 at Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Cloverdale campus. The show, titled for the length of a university semester, has challenged the artists to create works and manipulate media – including technology and pop culture – in a process of exploring themselves and the world around them, with reference to themes of isolation, fading memories, lost stories, meditative journeys, survival and liberation. For Charles – a member of Semiahmoo First Nation – it’s the opportunity to look at the fallout from exploitation of Canada’s aboriginal peoples, while Nickel is focusing on the issues surrounding Alzheimer’s in a

uestion: A few years ago I met and married a much older man. He was not keen to get married but I wept and threw some hissy Àts and he folded. Before our marriage he had a Will which hi h gave his estate to his four children. I have it on good authority that his old Will was void when he got married. I didn’t tell him this, and from his comments he thought his old will was valid. I kinda like him but I wouldn’t stay with him if I wasn’t assured most of his estate. Good plan?

Race coming to Cloverdale
Harness-racing regionals set Fraser Downs Racetrack is getting set to host one of the bigger events on the harness-racing calendar – the Western Regional Driving Championship. Fraser Downs general manager Ken Stratton says the April 26 event is an example of the type of opportunity the Cloverdale racetrack and casino is looking for, now that a five-year agreement is in place. “Now that we have finalized our racing schedule and have a defined five-year racing plan, the team at Fraser Downs can focus on securing and promoting events, such as the Regional Driving Championship, in hopes
of increasing the profile of our racing season and entertainment offerings,” Stratton said. The new racing agreement sets out 35 confirmed race days at Fraser Downs from January to April of 2014, plus another 36 race days next fall. The Western Regional Driving Championship is one of four regional championships taking place across Canada in advance of the National Driving Championship in August. The top-two drivers from the Western Regional division will advance to nationals in Charlottetown, P.E.I. Aug. 26. – Jennifer Lang

Overtime win gives youth side third Hong Kong crown
BC U18s grab rugby title Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter
Three Peninsula rugby players helped lift B.C. to a U18 Elite Youth Sevens rugby title last weekend in Hong Kong – but it took extra time to do it. Team BC – which counted Earl Marriott Secondary’s Cali Martinez, Semiahmoo’s Matt Gallagher and Lord Tweedsmuir’s Joseph Carter on its roster – won the championship with a 12-7 double overtime victory over Hong Kong’s DP Pirates. The win at the prestigious international tournament – which routinely is watched by tens of thousands of spectators – was B.C.’s third in a row. “The tournament chairman said it was the most exciting
game he’s seen here in the past three years, said Team BC manager Doug Tate. Team BC opened the tournament Thursday by winning all three of their pool games. For the third consecutive year, they did so without giving up a single try to the opposition. First, BC defeated Singapore 49-0, and followed that up with a 35-0 victory over the DEA Tigers. They capped the day with a 47-0 shutout over the Flying Kukris. The cup final, however, was a far tougher affair – the British Columbians trailed early before clawing back to tie the game, sending it to overtime. Carter and Gallagher each
scored tries for the victors, and Gallagher also tacked on one conversion. Though he didn’t factor into the scoring in the final game, Martinez was among Team BC’s top offensive weapons, scoring two tries in four games. The Hong Kong event was the second major tournament of 2014 for the U18 side, having placed second – losing to a team from the United States – at the Las Vegas High School Sevens tourney in February. Next on the team’s agenda is the Victoria International Youth Sevens, slated for July 11-12 at the University of Victoria. The event will feature top teams from Ontario, Utah, Washington and England.

Phantom takes aim at B.C. banner Five local female hockey players will be chasing a provincial Midget AAA championship this weekend in Langley. The five are members of the Fraser Valley Phantom of the BC Hockey Female Midget AAA League, which will host the Okanagan Rockets in a best-ofthree championship series at the
Langley Sportsplex. The winner will advance to the Esso Cup April 20-26 in Stoney Creek, Ontario. Surrey residents on the Phantom include forwards Katelin Korman and Mackenzie Wong, and defenders Mandy Pollock and Taygen Rosner. Cloverdale resident Morgan Symington is a goaltender.
ELVIS Performs LIVE!
The Phantom finished first in the six-team league this season with a 22-1-7 (won-lost-tied) record, and defeated the West Coast Avalanche 2-1 in a bestof-three semifinal series. Fraser Valley is the only team from B.C. to have played in an Esso Cup tournament, placing fifth at the eight-team event they hosted last year in Burnaby.

Bonneville lauded for sportsmanship i from page 33 at how well Bonneville stacked up on the pitch. “She’s a very talented player, and it really was an achievement for a girl that age, who is still fairly new to the sport, to go up against those 300-pounders,” he said. “And she more than just held her own – she was a standout. She blew people away.” Bonneville – who was awarded a “sports-woman-ship” award at the conclusion of the tour – has been impressing people long before Bermuda, however. Just 14, she already plays at a U18 level in club rugby, and is on Elgin Park’s senior girls rugby team, coached by longtime EPS coach Johan Mynhardt. In fact, it was Mynhardt, who also teaches metal shop at the South Surrey school, who first prodded Bonneville to give rugby a try.

Thomas Blackburn and Quinton Brown were members of the Canadian team in Bermuda. Ironically, the invite came moments after she’d upstaged a room full of boys.
Dr. Hansen Liang
“I was in Grade 8, in metal shop, and there was a big lever that we had to pull in class,” she explained. “None of the boys could do it, and (Mynhardt) asked me to try, so I did, and I pulled it down. “Right then, he said, ‘you’re going to play rugby.’” Bonneville initially rebuked the rugby invite because she was too tied up playing basketball and volleyball, but once her schedule cleared up in the spring, she decided to give the sport a try. She loved it right away, and in less than a year she was playing with the seniors. It was partly that experience that kept her nerves calm when facing older boys on the pitch in Bermuda. “I’m used to playing against bigger, older players,” she explained. “I’ve been out of my element for awhile now. I’m used to it.”

Kia taking on the small cars from the big guys
HUNTINGTON BEACH, CALIFORNIA – Kia rounds out its attack on the country’s best-selling cars with the launch of the final two models to the Forte lineup. Last year Kia introduced their all-new Forte sedan to compete with such top sellers as the Honda Civic, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra. This week, the 5-door hatchback version called Forte5 and the coupe, called Forte Koup begin arriving in dealerships. The launch of these two vehicles took us from Huntington Beach, California, through the mountains and desert to Borrego Springs and then back through the mountains to San Diego. The terrain varies from massive California highways to very twisty mountain passes and vast desert valleys. Stunning scenery and a recommended drive for any sightseer or driving enthusiast. Looks The Forte5 is the more practical of the two new Kias with a hatchback design that sets it apart from the competition. Many competitors don’t offer a hatch so this is sure to be noticed by people who need extra storage and passenger room. Sold with a new base 2.0L engine or an optional 1.6L turbo engine, there are varied looks depending on which trim is chosen. Fakes & Forgeries Can you spot the difference?
Noodling on the web one morning I found out that I was selling vehicles illegally. If I was in the business of selling, I need to be licensed as a dealer. Oh well. Everything’s been working out just fine for me. I skated through those recent bad deals. My previous sales were a distant memory – I was eager to start selling more. So, I decided to up my game a bit. I got a low-end truck and a car from an auction and another car from a new parking lot friend. I put ads for all three vehicles on Craigslist. Of course my ads said they were all real gems. You’d think people might see through my ads. “Need to sell fast, so price is flexible. Call with best offer.” And my cell number was the same for all three. Would anybody notice? The first two cheaper vehicles sold quickly. The last one took a bit longer to sell. Of course, it was the one I was most eager to sell. Why, you ask? Well, not that I passed the information along, but the auction provided vehicle history reports for the first two. I had no information on the last. So, I bought ICBC and CarProof vehicle history reports. I wanted to educate myself. To my surprise, there was a statement in both reports that the vehicle was possibly “stolen*.” I knew I had to sell it fast. I mean, I’d paid for it and I knew my new “friend” wouldn’t take it back. Four days later, I got a call from a young
“Apart from being stolen, it was pretty nice!” woman. She asked if the car would fit a family of four. “Definitely!” I practically screamed. I was a wreck during this sale. I just needed to get rid of this car – fast. I told the nice lady the details of the car. Apart from being stolen, it was pretty nice! I told her I was in a hurry to visit my mum in the hospital. She was in a hurry too – her three-year-old was anxious, pulling at her pant legs. She seemed to not want to be there as much as me. Finally, she agreed to buy the car. Phew! I was saved. Whatever happens next, I don’t care. It’s her problem not mine. I quickly changed my phone number (again). Weeks later, I saw her on the news – with kid still at pant legs – talking to a reporter. Apparently, the car was towed away by the police. And yes, she was trying to find me. Had I covered my tracks? I agonized.
*How can a stolen vehicle be sold? Curbers often break the law by bridging a title. Instead of registering a vehicle in their name within 10 days after a purchase, as required, they leave it in the name of the previous owner. This keeps their name out of the chain of title and from being caught with a stolen vehicle or one that would not be able to be registered or insured for another reason.
