SHOULD I USE PRIMER? No need for primer unless (1) you’re painting a light colour over a dark one, (2) the walls are badly stained, or (3) the walls are marked up from patching. A primer will help create a consistent, neutral surface that your paint will adhere to evenly. Instead of using a separate product the Benjamin Moore Aura line of paints work like all-in-one paint-and-primers.

Sylvan teachers among semi-finalists for teaching awards All of Sylvan Lake’s nominees came from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Three Sylvan Lake teachers were recognized for their exemplary teaching skills, when they were named semi-finalists for the province’s 2014 Excellence in Teaching Awards, last Friday. Mandy Cuellar and Angela Sola of École Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School, and Jeremy Ziebart of École Mother Teresa Catholic School are among more than 130 semi-finalists for the awards. They’ll find out if they are one of its 20 recipients in May. “Our semi-finalists use their expertise and creativity every day to make a powerful and lasting impact in the lives of their students,” said Minister of Education Jeff Johnson, in a news release. “These teachers exemplify the vision of Inspiring Education and are helping to build Alberta for an

even brighter future. “We are proud of their achievements and thank them for their contributions.” All semi-finalists will receive a certificate as well as access to professional development funding. They’ll also be recognized formally during an event this month. Although not a semi-finalist, another Sylvan Lake teacher — Stevie Philpott of École Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic School — was also nominated for the award. All of Sylvan Lake’s nominees came from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, and board trustee Liam McNiff couldn’t be any happier to see them recognized. “They’re very, very dedicated teachers, and they work extremely hard, and always try to do what’s best for the children,” he said. “It’s nice to see that dedication and hard work being recognized.” École Our Lady of the Rosary

Mandy Cuellar
Catholic School principal Jodi Smith said she felt “blessed” to have two of the semi-finalists come from her school, and spoke highly of their teaching skills. “One of (Cuellar’s) biggest assets to our school is the positive effect she has on her classroom climate, which in turn extends to the entire school,” she said. “She fosters the development of intel-
lectual, social, emotional and spiritual growth within each one of her students.” About Sola, she said: “(She) truly motivates the children to be the best that they can be, and as a faculty member, she is willing and able to help her colleagues any way that she can.” École Mother Teresa Catholic School principal Dorice
Swensrude similarly had no shortage of good things to say about Ziebart’s abilities as an educator. “(He) is a most deserving nominee for the Excellence in Teaching Award as a result of his innovative teaching strategies, leadership, commitment to excellence and passion for creating high learning opportunities for all,” she said.

Why are tourism’s benefits so difficult to understand? Release of a video this week expounding the benefits of tourism to Sylvan Lake puzzles us. Certainly the businesspeople interviewed understand the realities. So, why was there a need for the town to spend money creating a video applauding tourists who bring their money to Sylvan Lake, spend it in local businesses and help those businesses employ more people? Anyone who knows anything about Sylvan Lake knows it’s growth and prosperity have been based on tourism since it began. The first cottages were built by businessmen in Red Deer seeking a summer refuge. Before that they camped in tents, some families for the whole summer. While there has been a transition in

Shouldn’t they be the people spurring this action? Shouldn’t they be using organizations like the chamber of commerce to bring cohesiveness to the message that Sylvan is certainly a beautiful place to visit? It’s unfortunate that those making a considerable livelihood from visitors haven’t chosen to get together and work for the betterment of our community in the past. Will they be spurred by the town’s involvement in this initiative? We think not.
VIEWPOINTS
Change in politics and life is inevitable and constant It seems as quickly as Allison Redford marched onto the Alberta political stage, she has marched off of it, leaving Albertans somewhat bewildered and a little perplexed. “What will be the next move on the political chess board?” we ask, and, even more importantly, “who will make it?” I must admit I heard the news about Redford’s resignation later rather than sooner as I was quite engaged in a much more important event at the time our leader decided to make her surprise announcement. Grandchild number six had suggested (rather strongly) to his mother he was ready to be born. I got the phone call about midnight; a time when puppies and kittens and little children and grandmas such as myself are all safely tucked in bed and sleeping. Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, (sleep in your eyes on the highway in the middle of the night is not a good thing), I grabbed my trusty coffee cup and set out for the long, lonely drive to my daughter’s house, arriving somewhat dazed and confused, but ready.

Her resignation marks the end of a short, rather disastrous term in office which leaves the Progressive Conservatives scrambling to crazy glue their party back together. It is true they have a track record of a majority government that can’t be disputed. But, dissention in the ranks, much of which is a result of Redford’s questionable leadership tactics and a general political unrest, leaves one to wonder what will happen next. Will hard front line decisions be tempered with compassion and integrity? Will the leadership role ascertain the traits of dignity and strength combined with common sense and understanding are demonstrated? The best one can hope for is the person who steps into the shoes of leader at least attempts to portray those characteristics. Change is inevitable. Only time will tell how the political changes will unfold. At the very least, it will be interesting!

The time is here to celebrate our great Hockeyville accomplishments; overwhelming community spirit BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
“Let Your Fun Out!” That’s the phrase Spirit of Sylvan Hockeyville organizers are promoting as they plan for the much-anticipated announcement of who will win the grand prize and be named Kraft Hockeyville 2014. Win or lose, Saturday’s party is going to be a celebration — not just of Sylvan Lake and its supporters’ efforts to win the Kraft Hockeyville title, but also of all the Central Alberta neighbouring communities and minor hockey associations which helped Sylvan when the arena collapsed and more ice time was needed for league games and figure skating events. Saturday’s activities kick off with a pancake breakfast at the Lions Hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., organized by Sylvan Lake Lions Club members. The price is $7 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and those under six are free. Tim Hortons is providing coffee, juice and water, at breakfast and hot chocolate during the road hockey tournament. Flashback Freddy will be providing entertainment at the pancake breakfast and elsewhere during the day. It’s also the first opportunity to sample Kraft products, something that will be taking place throughout the day. At the Lions Hall, volunteers will be providing samples of Philadelphia chocolate cream cheese
spread. Then it’s on to the road hockey tournament which takes place in the east parking lot of Railway Park Promenade, directly north of the old arena from 11-1:30. Several divisions for guys, girls and adults are being organized. Contact Darcy Rosie (darcy@ trilliantrealty.ca) to register. Teams of up to eight, first come, first served. Lots of room for spectators to watch the action. A barbecue is being held in conjunction with the tournament. There will also be cake and Kraft products. Several food trucks will be on site at the multiplex during the day. The Red Deer Royals marching band will lead a ‘people parade’ from Centennial Park beginning at 2 p.m. It will proceed west along Lakeshore Drive to Centennial (50th) Street then south through the downtown to the multiplex. Everyone’s encouraged to follow the band. Wear your jerseys and team jackets, carry signs to identify your group or your support of Sylvan Lake’s Hockeyville bid. For info contact Brenda Dale at bjoan57@yahoo.ca. Following the parade, the focal point becomes the multiplex where West of the Fifth will begin entertaining at 3 p.m. Organizers stressed the Kraft Hockeyville announcement will be made between 4:30 and 5 p.m. so if you want to be there to celebrate, get there early. CBC Hockey Night In Canada film
crews will be in town to record events leading up to the announcement, and live reaction from the community’s supporters during the television broadcast. Entertainment will continue through the afternoon and early evening with St. James’ Gate and Boom Chucka Boys playing. Graham Parsons, chairman of the Spirit of Sylvan Hockeyville committee, said the day will be a fun memorial to close the chapter on the arena. “It’s almost like she had a life of her own and said ‘I’m going to grow this community together’, and she did,” he’s said in numerous interviews during the past couple of weeks. Mayor Sean McIntyre has echoed the same theme. The whole Hockeyville experience took people’s attention off the collapsed arena
and focused it on a positive goal. It’s brought the community together like no other project in recent memory, according to Parsons. During Saturday’s festivities at the multiplex, communities and minor hockey associations that helped Sylvan through the end of the hockey and skating seasons will be celebrated. Fifteen communities helped supply ice to host hockey games and another eight for figure skating. The committee is still building ‘Kraft Mountain’, a massive display of Kraft products that will be donated to the food bank following the festivities. If you’d like to contribute drop your items upstairs at the multiplex before Saturday or bring them to the event. Perhaps you’d like to carry KD Shakers in the parade with you to make as much noise as possible.

Nominations sought for provincial Volunteer of Year award BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The deadline to nominate worthy Sylvan Lakers for a prestigious provincial award is nearing.
Sylvan Lake News, in partnership with other Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association members and Direct Energy, invites Albertans to help recognize Alberta’s tremendous volunteer spirit with the tenth annual Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award. Nominations are being accepted until next Friday (Apr. 11). First introduced in Alberta in 2005, the Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award program is designed to recognize the significant efforts of individuals whose contributions make their communities a better place to live. The program is part of Direct Energy’s North American community involvement initiative that donated $75,000 to individuals and organizations in 2013. “Volunteerism is alive and well in Alberta and we see this year after year when the nominations pour in,” said Tanis Kozak, vice-president and general manager, Direct Energy. “Last year just over 100 nominations were received and we are proud to be supporting this program and bringing attention to the work these wonderful Albertan’s do in their communities.” “Alberta community newspapers have been telling the stories of exceptional volunteers for decades and we are well aware of the significant positive impact these individuals can have on our neighbours and towns,” said AWNA president Fred Gorman. The Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award is open to all residents of communities in the Alberta Weekly
Newspapers Association area. Individuals can either nominate themselves or be nominated by another individual or group. Nominations should be no longer than 750 words and must detail the specific contributions the individual or group has made to improve the community through volunteer service. The nomination must also profile the designated organization and how the organization would use the $5,000 donation from Direct Energy. Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award rules and nomination details may be found online at www.awna.com or www. directenergy.com/vcoy or can be picked up at Sylvan Lake News. Nominations must be submitted to the AWNA by April 11, 2014. A selection committee, formed of two representatives from the AWNA and two appointed by Direct Energy, will review award applications and select the finalists and winning individual or group. The award consists of: a $1,000 cash prize to the winner; $5,000 cash grant to the winner’s organization/cause of choice in their community; recognition of the winner’s achievement through a commemorative award, article and photo in AWNA newspapers across Alberta; $1,000 cash grant to the four semi-finalists’ organization/cause of choice in their communities; and recognition of the four semi-finalists through a commemorative award, article and photoin their respective AWNA community papers.

Taking a stand
- Amy Bouwman and Angela Eadie-Gyori spoke to École Steffie Woima Elementary School students about Pink Shirt Day Feb. 26. The entire school population donned pink to signify their stance against bullying. Pink Shirt Day began in 2007 when two teenage boys in Nova Scotia wore pink in support of one of their classmates who was bullied for doing so. It’s now celebrated every February in schools all across Canada and around the world. STUART FULLARTON

Cody students intent on increasing awareness of water issues BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS

A group of École H. J. Cody High School students are using some of the things they learned at a recent water summit to benefit Sylvan Lake. Four students and two teachers attended Inside Education’s Navigate 2014 Water Literacy Youth Summit in Banff Mar. 13 to 16, where they were joined by representatives from 19 other Alberta schools. Together, they learned about water in Alberta by listening to a number of experts on the subject, and were exposed to “the science, multiple perspectives, innovations and careers related to Alberta’s water story”, according to an Inside Education release. Grade 12 student Joy Fugler was one of the Sylvan Lake students who made the trip, and found it to be well worthwhile. “There was a great sense of community throughout all the schools in Alberta that were joining together to try to protect the watersheds,” she said. “I think it got a lot of the people more excited about it, and got them to actually understand what we’re doing and why.” As a result of attending the summit, members of the group are now preparing their own waterrelated project, and are planning to undertake an awareness campaign to highlight the importance
of proper watershed stewardship. “Basically, we’re going to try and raise more awareness on how our behaviour affects our watershed, and specifically in Sylvan Lake,” said Fugler. “How can we do a little bit more, without too, too much effort, and have everyone pitch in to take better care of the lake.” One of the means in which they intend to raise that awareness involves entering into a dialogue with town council to discuss town-related water issues, such as construction projects on wetlands. They’re also hoping to get more youths involved in watershed stewardship, and would like to see their advocacy spread to elementary schools in town. According to Fugler, they’ll be introducing “some smaller things that they can get the younger kids involved in as well so they feel like they’re making a difference, rather than just thinking that it’s something only older people can do”. Currently, the project is still in its planning stages. When it will begin and end remains unclear. Once up and running, however, Fugler is hopeful that it can be something that remains available for youths to get involved in for years to come. “(We’re) hoping that it’s something that will stick with the school, and always be underlying there,” she said. “Caring about the environment shouldn’t really stop, ever.”

Town produced video sells value of tourism to residents, council BY STEVE DILLS SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
The benefits of tourism to Sylvan Lake’s economy and growth are expounded by community business owners, employees and others in a video released this week by the town. Titled “Economic Benefits of Tourism” it’s goal is to “communicate to residents, council and other key audiences the value of tourism,” said Vicki Kurz, the town’s economic development officer. “Buy-in from local residents and council for the coming 2015 (town) budget is critical to moving

forward the tourism industry in Sylvan Lake, including marketing and development management components.” IMedia TV, of Red Deer, was recruited to film and direct video segments, conduct interviews, and edit the video with community stakeholders over the last year. To view the video, check the town’s website (www.sylvanlake.ca/public-notices.html) or go to YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=p4hRigWgduQ) “The town was happy to have co-operation and input from the business community and other

stakeholders on this important project,” said Kurz in a media release. “Understanding how tourism impacts the economic picture in Sylvan Lake is really crucial, especially when you count the number of jobs the industry creates and how the wealth is redistributed to support the community and recreation infrastructure.” A second initiative will take place this summer when the town, working in partnership with Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation will conduct a Tourism Economic Impact Assessment. This
will include data collection by surveyors and then running the data through the provincial government’s economic impact model. Information from the study will be added to the video as an update in late fall 2014.

- The École H. J. Cody High School archery team competed in the provincial NASP (National Archery in Schools Program) competition at the Edmonton Boat and Sportsmen’s Show in March. With 32 members attending this year, it is looking good for Cody to have a larger group for next year’s competition. Next year, nationals will be held in Alberta and it is the goal of the team to compete in that event as well. Currently the Cody team, coached by Linda Wagers, is the only one in Chinook’s Edge School Division to have competed at the provincial level. SUBMITTED
Skating organizers looking forward after challenging year BY STUART FULLARTON SYLVAN LAKE NEWS
Another year has come and gone for membersof Sylvan Lake Skating Club who marked the end of their season with an annual general meeting and potluck supper at Lions Hall Sunday night. But this wasn’t any ordinary year for the club. Collapse of the arena in January caused headaches for organizers who were forced to cancel programs and find alternative ice times and locations for those that remained. “We lost over half of our arena ice time,” said club registrar Tracy Kondor, adding that the club will face fresh scheduling challenges as it moves into next season. “It’s just a matter of trying to keep everything going with the reduced ice time,” she said. “We’re not too sure what kind of ice we’re going to be given, so as soon as we know what our allotment is, then we can kind of plan our programming around that.”
Before the multiplex reopened, the club found its skating time in the arenas of surrounding municipalities, including Rocky Mountain House, Spruce View, Innisfail, Blackfalds, Red Deer and Ponoka. According to Kondor, the club is open “to everyone and anyone”, and even offered an adult CanSkate program until the collapse of the arena forced its cancellation. Otherwise, all levels of skating are offered, and are run by Skate Canada-certified coaches. This year saw about 80 people registered. They ranged in age from three to 24 years old. Registration for next season, which runs from the end of September until the end of March, is expected to open in late August. Kondor feels that the club, around since the late 1970s, has something for everyone. “It’s just getting you up and going, then if you want to branch off into figure skating and all the spins and jumps and everything, by all means, you work your way up,” she said. “It’s whatever you want to do as far as skating.”
Trained - Members of École H. J. Cody High School Lakers senior basketball teams ran after school basketball camps for Grade 4 and 5 students at C. P. Blakely Elementary School, from Mar. 17-27. They were thanked by participants following the events. JANET MCCLELLAND

One of the highlights of the meet was that these two swimmers earned 305 points between them to place second for the most points overall for small clubs (49 or less registered competitive swimmers). Pretty impressive! Keep up the good work!

James (Jim) Gordon Steppler April 12 1943 - March 23 2014 Jim passed away peacefully at the Foothills Medical Centre, surrounded by his loving family after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents, Valentine and Beulah; brother, Arnold and sister, Eileen. Jim is survived by the love of his life, Marlene; sons, Gordon (Lori), Ray (Minette), and Randy (Doreen); as well as grandchildren, Kaitlan (Terry), Jason, Laren, Kamryn, Madisen, Lance, Donivan, Robin and Ryan. Also surviving Jim is his sister, Jean, numerous in - laws, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends, including special friends, Frank and Linda Shufletoski. An animal lover extraordinaire, Jim and Marlene had many canine companions: Tippy, Lady, Pepper, Goldie and Xena - lucky pooches to be sure! Jim had a lifetime passion for sailing. As a youngster, growing up in Pitt Meadows B.C., he had a fascination with constructing primitive boats from any scrap of wood available. With not a lifejacket to be seen, Jim tested his creations out on the local sloughs. In later years, reflecting on these childhood adventures, he commented “It was a miracle I didn’t drown”! Marlene and Jim spent countless hours on Sylvan Lake aboard ‘Teal’, taking part in many local yacht club activities. In more recent years, aboard ‘Rainy Daze’, they spent their summers on Vancouver Island, exploring the many Gulf Islands. Reading a great book while relaxing on your boat and sharing a suds or two with your Sweetheart by your side -- who could ask for anything more? Certainly not Jim! So, Jim, until we meet again, May you always have ‘A tall ship and a star to steer her by a fair wind and a following sea’. The family would like extend a sincere thank - you to the caring and compassionate staff at Foothills Medical Centre. To express condolences, please visit: www.mountainviewmemorial.ca.
