D-Chat for folks with Diabetes
Recently, the Canadian Diabetes Association introduced a new community initiative called D-Chat. It is a free and confidential telephone-based personal mentoring program, which is now available to folks with newly-diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in British Columbia and the Yukon. The goal of the program is to empower and guide participants with type 2 diabetes towards a path of healthy living by having them regularly connect with a peer mentor. “We are excited to offer this unique support program and encourage newly diagnosed individuals with type 2 diabetes in B.C. and the Yukon to participate,” says Leanne Morgan, Canadian Diabetes Association community programs and partnerships (B.C. and Yukon) senior manager. “Finding out you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes can be an unforgettable moment in one’s life. "Having a mentor share his or her own experiences of managing their diabetes, while providing supportive tips and suggestions can help someone newly diagnosed alleviate the stress of figuring out the best ways to adjust.” D-Chat matches individuals newly-diagnosed with type 2 diabetes with a volunteer mentor also living with type 2 diabetes for helpful casual one-on-one phone chats over a period of six weeks. Once an individual registers, a trained volunteer will phone them to answer their questions, offer information about local resources and share experiences. D-Chat volunteers do not provide medical advice; instead they share their personal experiences and support on how best to navigate the health care system. Those recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes can register by phone at 1-800-BANTING (226-8464) or by e-mail at dchat@diabetes.ca. Callers will be asked to complete a questionnaire when they register and are then matched to a volunteer peer mentor. More information is available at diabetes. ca/dchat. The Canadian Diabetes Association gratefully acknowledges ONETOUCH® as a proud supporter of D-Chat.

100 Mile House RCMP busy with getting drivers off roads
Police
report 100 Mile RCMP responded to 47 complaints and calls for service during the past week. Prohibited driving Shortly after 10 p.m. on March 29, Cariboo Chilcotin Traffic Services pulled over a vehicle for not having taillights on Highway 97 near Airport Road. The male driver was unable to produce a
driver’s licence. From his other identification, the driver was determined to be a prohibited driver and he had not had a licence since November 2011. The vehicle was towed and impounded for seven days. He was issued an appearance notice for a court date in May in 100 Mile House. Impaired driving On March 27, 100 Mile RCMP responded to a report of domestic violence at a residence on the 93 Mile Loop
Road south of 100 Mile House. The male suspect had apparently left the scene, driving his pickup truck while being impaired. The driver of the pick-up was intercepted by police on Highway 97. He was detained for the assault allegation. Also, the driver displayed symptoms of liquor consumption. An approved screening device was administered at the scene. The result was a
fail. The driver declined the second test. As the driver met the established criteria, he was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition. The driver's vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for 30 days. The driver was held in custody while the domestic assault investigation was completed. The driver was released later in the day on a promise to appear with conditions and a court date in July.

Ron Tonts held the pig’s head during the Green Lake Snowmobile Club’s Pig Roast and Windup on March 22 so some of the young folks could get a closer look. Alistair Quinn, left, Kalen Quinn, London Anderson and her twin sister, Alexis Anderson, took advantage of the opportunity.
Pig roast enjoyed by all
By Gail Potter Organizers Dale and Ron Tonts and Ron and Barb Thurston are happy to announce the Green Lake Snowmobile Club’s Pig Roast and Dance Wind-up was a two-time sellout – once on their set limit and then again when they squeaked in a dozen or so more latecomers who missed the announcement. The food was outstanding and plentiful. About 100 people danced throughout the evening, winning silent
auctions, door prizes, pick-a-prize draws and spot dances until the late hours. Everyone
enjoyed the Class Mates band with Gail and Brad Potter. Continued on 5

A suspense thriller played out at 40,000 feet in the air. During a transatlantic flight from New York City to London, U.S. Air Marshal Bill Marks (Neeson) receives a series of cryptic text messages demanding that he instruct the airline to transfer $150 million into an off-shore account. Until he secures the money, a passenger on his flight will be killed every 20 minutes.
This new chapter of the epic saga takes the action to a fresh battlefield -- on the sea -- as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. The movie pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy.

Club windup successful From 3
The Potters added a new bass player Sandy Amy, also from their high school days. The event was a huge financial success as it raised $2,390 for the club. This money will help the snowmobile club pay for repairs on its grooming equipment and the costs trying to maintain the trails, says club president Peter McKie. The monies raised will also help with the maintenance of the clubhouse, which is starting to show wear and tear, he says, adding they are trying to use the clubhouse for more community events and need to keep it maintained to Interior Health standards. “We would like to thank all the members, guests and businesses who participated in the raffles, which made this event a huge success for the club. People had so much fun, we are looking forward to doing this again next year,” the organizers say.
The snowmobile clubhouse seems to be the “in” place to be to have a great time.
Beginning on April 14 there will be daytime road closures and construction on 1st Avenue between Hwy #97 and Birch St. Construction will take approximately 3 weeks. Please use caution in this area. Log House donations FLYER help local babies DEALS
The Log House in 100 Mile House is welcoming donations for local babies until April 30. Customers are invited to drop off new baby items, such as clothing, diapers and non-perishable baby food. Co-owner Elli Meinert says The Log House is pleased to support causes in the community that help people in need and raise awareness about these families. “If people bring something in, they get 10 per cent off their regularly-priced purchase, and then they get to put their name in for the draw for a free pair of Muck boots.” The idea is to help ensure all local babies
“We Care”
receive the basic necessities required for healthy development, she explains. “We believe a good start to life is important for every baby and understand that some families and single parents are in need of basics for their children.” Meinert notes all donations go to Success by 6, a program at the Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre (CFEC). There is currently a “huge need” for formula and other items in high demand are disposable diapers and baby wipes, she explains. Noting some people may not have time to pick up something for a baby, Meinert adds
