Niedermayer Hockey School offering two scholarships via contest BA R RY CO ULT E R

One of the nation’s most renowned hockey schools is now open for registrations. And to mark the 14th annual edition of the Niedermayer Hockey School, Edge School and Rob and Scott Niedermayer are giving away two scholarships, in a contest via the Daily Townsman. See details below. Rob Niedermayer spoke to the Daily Townsman this week about the school, and its involvement in the community.

“We both attended hockey schools here when we were kids, and I know how much fun we had,” he said. “So this is a nice way to give back (to the community), and you get to meet a lot of nice kids and see them come along in hockey. The Niedermayer Hockey School, which runs in the first full week of August, is open to male and female players of all levels, aged six to 14. Players are grouped according to their skill level and

age group, and spend eight hours a day on hockey matters, including on ice training, dry land training, read and react, cross training or pool time, hockey talk and lunch. “The kids get to pick up on a lot of stuff, and it prepares them for the upcoming season,” Rob said. And the school draws young hockey scholars from far and wide, with an international reach.

Mount Baker student Darynn Bednarczyk has placed first in the annual poster contest put on by the Royal Canadian Legion. The national contest covers posters, essays and poems. As well as a $1,000 prize, first-place winners get a trip to Ottawa to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony there.

For the past few years, Darynn Bednarczyk has entered the annual Legion poster contest without hearing back. This year, however, on her final year of eligibility, the Mount Baker Secondary senior made it all the way to the top. She has been awarded first place in her cate-

gory in the national contest. Bednarczyk said the difference is that this year she drew on much more personal sources for the work of art. “I decided I was going to do a tribute to my grandpa, because he fought in World War II. I drew a portrait of him and used all his war photos and his medals,” Bednarczyk said. “In past years I

just went with pictures off of Google and it didn’t have the personal relevance to me. This one was very personal, and that’s what the judges saw in it.” She first won the Cranbrook level, then the zone level and then she was notified by email that she had won in B.C.

IH offering immunizations for kindergarten-aged kids BARRY COULTER

This week it was reported that the 320 confirmed cases, mostly involving children, is the largest ever outbreak of measles recorded in B.C. While these cases are mostly confined to the Fraser Valley, it is a stark reminder of the importance of immunization, especially for children. And in timely fashion, the Cranbrook Health Unit is offering immunization clinics next week for kindergarten-aged children, to make sure kids’ immune systems are ready to go.

“Recent outbreaks of pertussis and measles in B.C. have highlighted the importance of keeping disease rates low, by keeping immunization rates high,” Interior Health advised in a press release. Kindergarten boosters are being offered to children between the ages of 4 and 6 at the Cranbrook Health Unit. Clinics are scheduled for April 7, 11 and 14 and appointments can be booked by calling 250-420-2207.

Fort Steele Heritage Town just finished up with its fantastic Spring Break Camp. It was a full week of discovering everything about Fort Steele. The children took part in many exciting activities; for example the talented ladies in the dress shop taught them how to sew their own stuffed teddy bears. The kids also made home-made pizza buns from scratch in the bakery, and went on a behind the scenes tour of the artifact storage area. Finally the children had a sneak peek at the baby lambs, which are only three to four weeks old. These newly-born lambs are now available for viewing. The next camp will be on Monday, April 7, from 9 a.m.to 3 p.m. It includes making friendship bracelets, decorating Easter eggs, eating waffles for lunch, and playing games. It’s for children in Grades 1-6. The cost is $35 each and $30 for siblings. For more information or to register please contact Kathy at info@fortsteele.bc.ca or call 250-417-6000.

SD5 board hires new Director of Student Learning T r i na Ayli ng

School District 5 (SD5) Board of Education is pleased to announce the hiring of Jason Tichauer as the new Director of Student Learning. This position, previously held by Doug McPhee until his retirement last month, is responsible for the implementation, support, supervision and evaluation of educational programs in the District. Board Chair Frank Lento said McPhee has offered his assistance transitioning Tichauer into the position of Director of Student Learning. “Doug and Jason are very similar when it comes to their commitment to and passion for student success,” Lento said. “While it’s difficult to say goodbye to Doug, the Board feels very confident in Jason’s ability to take up the torch.” Born in North Vancouver and raised in Squamish, B.C., Tichauer received both his Bachelor of Education and Master of Education (Leadership) at the

University of Victoria. Currently the Principal of Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS), Tichauer began his career teaching at Fort Nelson Secondary School in 1994. He joined SD5 eight years ago in 2006 as Principal of Sparwood Secondary School. “I’ve enjoyed my time as principal of Mount Baker immensely. I’ve been so privileged to work and learn from such a collaborative group of people. Their dedication to improving student transitioning, commitment to professional development and genuine connection with our students is extraordinary.” According to Tichauer, despite how much he’ll miss working with students on a daily basis he’s excited to take on the challenges of the Director of Student Learning position. “The idea of taking my passion for raising student achievement and the programs that support it to a district-wide level is extremely rewarding”. Lento says Tichauer

is a strong leader, especially when it comes to letting others take the reigns. “Jason understands that leadership is the forefront of twenty-first century learning. He recognizes leadership isn’t about telling people what they should do but about letting people excel at what they do best.” Tichauer will continue in the capacity of principal at Mount Baker Secondary School until the end of June, at the same time assuming the duties of Director of Student Learning beginning April 1, 2014. “The students of Mount Baker are very important to me. I want to be able to provide them with continuity to the end of the school year – and I want to be able to celebrate with this year’s grad students whom I’m so proud to have served.” Outside of his work with SD5, Tichauer is involved with the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club and is an active husband and father of two.

“Then yesterday I got the letter in the mail that (said) I had won the entire competition,” she said. “It was pretty special too because one of the judges from Ottawa wrote me a personal letter saying how touching it was that I did a tribute to my grandpa.” The contest is held across Canada, with most schools participating. She wasn’t sure how

many others entered on the national level, but when she won at the B.C. level, they told her it was out of 7,000 entries. Her entry is in the senior category, which is Grades 10, 11 and 12. The category is divided into colour and black and white entries. Bednarczyk took first place in the black and white category and received $1,000, as well as a trip for her and one

parent to the nation’s capital in November for the Remembrance Day ceremony. Bednarczyk said so far she has received monetary prizes, but she is looking forward to the trip to Ottawa for Remembrance Day. She will get to lay a wreath on behalf of the Legion. Her artwork will also be on display at the Canadian War Museum for one year.

All over B.C., in every town and hidden corner, writers are working away, producing a huge variety of original books that you can find in book stores and libraries. To celebrate the entertaining and award-winning works of B.C. writers, the legislature has declared Wednesday, April 9 as B.C. Book Day. The event is being organized by the Association of Book Publishers of British Columbia. The association will promote published books and their authors, while the B.C. Booksellers Association will promote independent book stores and their role in promoting local books. Here in Cranbrook, local book stores and the library are collaborating to feature books from all over the province.

“We are looking at it as an opportunity to say: this is the rich variety of stuff that is available,” said Erin Dalton at Lotus Books. Lotus will be open until 7 p.m. on Wednesday and will be showcasing the wide variety of local and B.C. work available, with specials on many titles. “We like to carry a lot of local books and B.C. books, and there is such a wide variety for all kinds of people – we just want to highlight that,” said Dalton. B.C. books can be found in every category: fiction, children’s books, cooking, travel, and history to name a few. B.C. writers include Grant Lawrence, Wade Davis, Geoff Berner, Bev Sellars, and Stephen Leacock Award-winning writer Mark Leiren-Young. Meanwhile, over at Pages Book Emporium, there will be a feature window of B.C. books and

a display inside highlighting the best second-hand local books available, from history to fiction. The two stores will also offer a reciprocal deal: if you take a receipt from Pages to Lotus and vice versa, you will go in the draw to win gift certificates from both stores. Meanwhile, the Cranbrook Public Library is highlighting the One Book One Kootenay literary contest, which starts up again next month for its sixth year. In the contest, Kootenay librarians whittle down a shortlist of books by Kootenay authors to three titles. Those three titles will be announced in May. The three authors will then tour Kootenay libraries in June, as readers in the region have the chance to read their books and vote for a favourite. The winning book is announced in September.

Hockey school offers two scholarships Continued from page 1 “Some years there’ve been kids coming from Japan, from California, from all over,” Rob said. “It’s pretty amazing to see how far they come sometimes.” The school also boasts a solid cadre of instructors. “We usually have some local kids, some who’ve attended the hockey school who’ve gone on to become instructors.” Rob said. “There’ve been quite a few (former Kootenay Ice players) who come back to help out as well. We’ve been pretty lucky that way.” The Niedermayers donate proceeds raised through the school towards their foundation, the Niedermayer Family Fund, which provides $10,000 annually to help local charities and projects in the Kootenay area.

“It’s a good way to help out the community,” Rob said. “The community has been so good to us.” The Townsman contest has two scholarships to the school to give away, worth almost $50 each. Every Tuesday (starting April 1 through May 6), a stylized numbered puck (1 through 6) will be hidden somewhere in the pages of the Townsman/Bulletin. See the accompanying advertisement every Tuesday to see what those pucks look like. Fill out the form that’s with the ad, and once you have the form completed, listing the page number where you found each puck, bring it in to us at the Townsman office, 822 Cranbrook Street North. Entry deadline is May 21. The draw will be made shortly after. Good luck, all.

Vaccinations offered Continued from page 1

Interior Health said that when children reach kindergarten age they should get two booster immunizations of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), polio and chickenpox. As children get older, the protection from their infant immunizations can wear off. Vaccines trigger the immune system to be prepared to protect itself when exposed to certain bacteria and viruses that cause diseases such as those listed above. The DTaP-IPV vaccine protects against four diseases all in one shot. • Diphtheria is a serious infection of the nose and throat and is spread through the air by

sneezing, coughing or directly by skin-to–skin contact. • Tetanus, also known as “lockjaw”, is caused by a germ mostly found in soil that can enter the skin through a cut or scrape. • Pertussis is a serious infection of the lungs and throat that is easily spread by coughing, sneezing or close face-to-face contact. • Polio, although no longer in Canada, still occurs in other parts of the world and can reappear if immunization rates fall. • The chickenpox vaccine is the best way to protect your child against the chickenpox illness and its complications such as pneumo-

nia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and bacterial infections of the skin. • Encephalitis can lead to convulsions, deafness or brain damage. For some people, the chickenpox virus can become active again later in life and cause a painful rash called shingles. “Vaccines are safe,” the IH press release said. “It is much safer to get the vaccine than to get sick from the disease.” Common reactions to the vaccine include soreness, redness and swelling where the shot was given. These reactions are mild and generally only last one to two days. The kindergarten

booster is easy to get. If you live outside the Cranbrook area, you can contact your local Public Health Centre for immunization information, to find out when kindergarten booster clinics are being held in your area, or to book an appointment. Public Health Centres are listed under Health Authorities in the ‘Blue Pages’ of your local Telus telephone directory, or you can visit www.interiorhealth.ca and follow the links under Health Services/Service Listings/Public Health Centres. In addition, www. immunizebc.ca is a great source for information on vaccinations and immunization.

Making the choice to smile Arne Petryshen Townsman Staff

On April 16, the Canadian Cancer Society will bring in Glenda Standeven and her husband Rick to talk about their experience dealing with their respective bouts of cancer. Glenda is a speaker, author, and cancer survivor. She lost her entire right leg and hip to bone cancer in 1988. Her husband Rick was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011. Glenda will speak at the Heritage Inn at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16. The event falls on the same evening as the Prostate Cancer Support Group’s regular meeting, so the group has advised that the regular meeting will shift times so everyone can attend the presentation. After Rick was diagnosed with

an aggressive prostate cancer in December 2011, he underwent a radical nerve sparing prostatectomy surgery in May 2012. “When Rick was first diagnosed we found the amount of information out there to be overwhelming and finding the answers to what we really needed to know were intimidating to say the least,” Glenda said. Rick decided that he wanted to have the process and journey of dealing with the cancer told by his wife from her point of view. The book that came out of it, “What Men Won’t Talk About… And Women Need to Know” will be launched at the speaking event. Rick wanted men and women to recognize the early signs of prostate cancer and also the reality of treatment options and so

encouraged his wife to write the book. Glenda will also be promoting her other book, “I Am Choosing To Smile”. Glenda said she believes in choosing to smile even when things get tough. “What more could a person ask for in their lives than to offer encouragement to others who are facing tough times?” she said. Copies of both books will be available at the speaking event and 20 per cent from the sales of the books will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. The event is free, but seating is limited, so contact Sarah at 250426-8916 or email staylor@bc. cancer.ca to reserve a spot. Highway 3 closed for takedown of suspect Continued from page 1 “The erratic driver ended up pulling over to the side of the road and the complainant approached the vehicle, but the suspect, Mr. Richard, actually jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the bush.” Members of the Elk Valley RCMP attended the scene and a crisis negotiator was called in. After about an hour, they were able to coax Richard into surrendering and he was arrested. Langley RCMP obtained an arrest warrant for Richard on Wednesday for breaching his condition of no contact with his estranged wife. The breach is related to an attempted murder

and house fire in the Willowbrook area of Langley that occurred early that morning. Langley RCMP were called to a residence in the 19600 block of Wakefield Drive just after 1 a.m. Pacific Time. “What the investigation told us is that the ex-husband, Andre Richard, broke in to the residence, and we believe at that point started the fire, and went upstairs to assault his wife [with an unidentified weapon],” said Marks. “His step-daughter tried to intervene and was assaulted as well.” The mother, along with Richard’s 14-yearold step-daughter and

eight-year-old son, were able to flee to a neighbour’s house where they called the police. “The last time [Richard] was seen was going down to the basement,” said Marks. “Once the house had finished burning and police were able to complete a thorough search, they determined that Richard was not in the residence.” At this point, the Langley RCMP issued a search warrant and a charge on Richard for entering the family home and breaching the condition of no contact. All three victims were taken to the hospital. The daughter received treatment for her

injury and the mother is still recovering in hospital, but was expected to be released Thursday. The son escaped uninjury and did not receive treatment. After his arrest Thursday morning, Richard was brought to Cranbrook where the Langley RCMP Serious Crime Investigators would follow through on the investigation. A report to Crown Counsel was to be completed Thursday afternoon and submitted for charge approval. Formal charges were expected to be laid soon after. Richard is known to RCMP for previous domestic violence occurrences.

Cautionary tax tales for seniors Local tax expert concerned about seniors being targeted at tax time

C AROLYN GR ANT

The end of April is the deadline for filing personal income taxes in Canada; a busy time for tax preparers. Pat Thorrougood from Kimberley’s Exact Tax says she has a lot of senior clients and she is worried that some seniors are being taken advantage of as the deadline looms. Her first concern is the frequency with which her clients are seeing scam emails purporting to be from Canada Revenue Agency and requesting personal information in order for a person to claim their refund. “I’m worried about seniors when they see this,” Thorrougood said. “It’s got a good logo, everything looks official. I couldn’t believe it when I saw it.” The Canada Revenue Agency itself has posted warnings about this particular scam — a phishing scam designed to collect personal information. From the CRA website: The CRA does not do the following: • The CRA never requests, by email, personal information of any kind from a taxpayer.

• The CRA will never request information from a taxpayer pertaining to a passport, health card, or driver’s license. • The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer. • The CRA will not leave any personal information on an answering machine.

“It really upsets me to see someone who is living on a fixed income of $30,000 pay so much when they don’t have to.” Pat Thorrougood When in doubt, ask yourself the following: • Am I expecting additional money from the CRA? • Does this sound too good to be true? • Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return? • Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me? • How did the requester get my email address?

• Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? The other issue that worries Thorrougood is certain agencies who solicit seniors by telling them they will help them get disability refunds for a percentage of their return, usually in the range of 25 per cent. It’s not illegal to do so, Thorrougood says — but neither is it necessary to pay someone to access the funding because the form you need to fill out (T2201) is really quite simple. Thorrougood explains that if someone (usually a senior) qualifies for disability funding, they can receive tax credits of up to $1,500 per year. “For some people who haven’t been aware of this, they may not have claimed seven or eight years worth of credits,” she said. “They could receive an amount like $11,000 or $12,000 and the broker, or person who assisted them with the form, gets 25 per cent. Any reputable tax business like Exact Tax or H&R Block will have the form. The only thing you need to fill out yourself is the personal information on the top half. Then you take it to

your doctor and for $20 he fills it out. Even if you have one of these brokers help you, you still have to go to the doctor. “I’m concerned that people in some cases are paying up to $2,500 or more for a service that can be done by paying $20 for your doctor to fill out a form. I do it for my clients for free. Any ethical establishment will charge at most $50 to help fill out the form. “It really upsets me to see someone who is living on a fixed income of $30,000 pay so much when they don’t have to.”

God’s feminine side plain to see

M

any of us are used to talking about God as if God were male. We use images such as “our heavenly Father” or “Lord” or “king”, and refer to God as “He”. I could go on with many more examples. But a close reading of the Bible gives us many glimpses of different images for God — God’s feminine side, as it were. Any halfway decent theologian will tell you that God is decidedly not an old man on a throne in the sky. Nevertheless, this image of God persists somehow in the popular imagination, most likely because of some of the language we find in the Bible, which was written over the course of many centuries in a patriarchal culture. It takes some effort and imagination, but if you are willing to dig around a little or look at things from a different angle, you can find many glimpses of a God not defined by patriarchy. The biblical authors were well aware that words were not sufficient to speak of God. They reach for many different images: God is a lily, a rose, dew, wind and fire. God is a mother bear and a lion. On the other hand God is not a lion, but a lamb. God is not in the fire or the wind, but in the still small voice. God is in the images of birthing and bird — these are especially fruitful. God comes to Job in a whirlwind and asks, “Where were you … when the sea burst forth from the womb, when I made

the clouds its garment, the dense clouds its wrap? … From whose belly does ice come; who gave birth to heaven’s frost?” Obviously not Job’s belly. Where was Job when God pushed and groaned — in the waiting room smoking a cigar? When God speaks from the whirlwind, God doesn’t talk of slaying Leviathan or Behemoth. God speaks adoringly for quite a long time about Leviathan’s chest and feet and skin — and about Behemoth’s belly and Rev. Yme bones and mouth. God Woensdregt doesn’t sound like a moral accountant or a distant king here, God sounds like a mother smitten with her children — however strange or ugly they may seem to others. In Isaiah, God says “like a woman in labour I will moan; I will pant, I will gasp.” God is in the process of giving birth to her people here, and it is not an easy delivery. The birth image continues in the gospel of John. Jesus tells Nicodemus that if he wants to see God’s kingdom, he must be born anew. This metaphor has often been equated with a personal decision one makes to have a relationship with Jesus. There is suffering and risk involved in birthing, both for the one giving birth and the one being born. This seems like a pretty good way to talk about God in relationship to God’s people — about creation and redemption. And then there are the birds. Female deities were often depicted by birds in the ancient Middle East. You can find traces of this sort of imagery all over the Bible. God

lifts the Israelites on her wings and shelters humanity under her protective pinions. The Roman Empire exalted the eagle — a strong and powerful mighty killer of a bird. It’s striking in this context that Jesus would compare himself to a hen. You could hardly come up with an animal less evocative of imperial might. “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who were sent to you! How often I have wanted to gather your people just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings.” It’s a loving image, but it’s not especially dignified. The chicken is not a magnificent bird. A hen is a fussy old woman — a fat– bottomed grandma in an apron pickling cucumbers. It is vastly different to be a chicken than it is to be an eagle, or for that matter, a cock. Much of the world worships power — if not a powerful, all–knowing deity, then just power. Power rules. If there is a God, then God must be muscular and brawny. In fact, some preachers have begun to talk about Jesus as if he were more like Rambo than a mother hen. “Jesus is coming back,” says one such preacher, “and he’s going to kick some butt.” He’s wrong, of course. Many theologians would argue that Jesus reveals God’s essential being is not power — but love. Like the hen with her wings over her chicks, there is some fragility in this picture. But perhaps images of a vulnerable God are important if we hope to have a world that is not overrun by bullies and corporate kings. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

hings are a little slow in the town of Wardner, B.C., these days. Not like it once was. It’s the same in Wardner, Idaho, population somewhere around 100. Both towns were named for Jim Wardner, who really didn’t stick around either place for long, although he spent a fair amount of time in the Kootenays and was wellknown in Cranbrook in his day. He was a wandering soul; the only reason he stayed anywhere for long was to make money — or lose it — or to visit an old friend or make a new one, have a laugh and a drink or two, make some plans and tell some stories. Jim Wardner enjoyed a good story and, as it turns out, one of the best was his life. He was born on May 19, 1846, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a youth he was restless and relatively unschooled, with a love for animals and a passion for doing business, any business, and if it made him some money in the bargain then so much the better. Jim began raising and selling rabbits at age eight and stuck with it for five years, about the longest stretch he stuck with any single occupation. At age 13 he became a clerk in the I.N. Morton Drug Store where he gradually learned the pharmaceutical trade to the point that he was taken on as a hospital steward with the 39th Regular Wisconsin Volunteers in 1863, fighting for the Union in the American Civil War. Generally relegated to the rear lines, his only contact with the enemy came near Memphis, Tennessee, when Nathan Bedford Forrest and his raiders attacked the regiment. According to his autobiography “Jim Wardner of Wardner, Idaho” — an entertaining read if ever there was one — the Wisconsin Volunteers “started like broncos before a cloudburst and fled five miles to safety.” Jim, remain-

James Frederick Wardner – 1846 - 1905 ing behind to help with the wounded, avoided capture by hiding in a big bake oven for “ten of the longest hours ever passed” before he safely rejoined his comrades. Following his discharge at the end of the war, Jim paid a quick visit home and then moved on to New York City. The only job available was night clerk in a drugstore in the notoriously crime-ridden “Five Points” neighbourhood where most of his sales involved morphine, opium and other such legal “medicines.” He supplemented his income by selling photographs of his new-found friend, local saloon-keeper John Allen, dubbed by the NY Times “the Wickedest Man in New York.” Jim quit his regular job to implement a series of lectures throughout the area featuring John Allen but was foiled when Mr. Allen died rather suddenly. Jim then undertook a stint as an assistant to an unnamed “Tapeworm Specialist” who supplied prescriptions to “no less than ten women a day ... who paid — according to the

doctor’s ability to size her up — twenty-five to fifty dollars,” a goodly sum in the 1860s. Always eager for a chance to further himself, Jim purchased the exclusive rights to sell a newly invented “Anti-Cow-Kicking Milking Machine” in the State of Wisconsin. The enterprise suited his purposes nicely as he had been corresponding with Mary Hadley, a young Milwaukee lady with whom he made plans to wed on his trip through. As luck would have it, it also allowed him the opportunity to demonstrate the wondrous milking machine for the first time. It was, in fact, a specially constructed bright red, nickel-plated tripod stool upon which his future mother-in-law’s maid was knocked senseless by his future mother-in-law’s cow, shattering both the invention and his patent hopes in the process. Luckily both the maid and the wedding plans survived and he took himself a wife of inestimable patience and perseverance. Jim once again entered the

pharmacy business as a partner in the Palace Drug Store in Boston, until the prospect of visiting an uncle out west proved greatly preferable to facing the wrath of a customer cast into spasms by Jim’s assistant who prescribed the wrong drug. He duly found himself in Los Angeles, “a quaint, old Spanish-Mexican town of few pretensions and less attractions,” dabbling in real estate and fruit farming, both of which proved very profitable shortly after he gave them up. A friend from his Milwaukee rabbit-raising days convinced him to invest in a wild hog farm on open parkland near San Diego, only to discover that the 500 porkers promptly scattered throughout the San Julian Mountains and, when occasionally spotted, proved too wild and dangerous to capture. A return to Los Angeles soon sent him in another direction, one that he would follow for the rest of his life and one in which he would make his fame and fortune. His fame would invariably increase; his fortune would remain somewhat more erratic. Introduced to a promising proposition in Ivanpah, Arizona, he invested heavily in his first mine, from which employees would pack ore 260 miles west to Los Angeles, much of it across the harsh Mojave Desert. It proved a decent money-maker until an entire pack train of 25 animals and five packers was massacred by rampaging Apache Indians. That was enough for Jim to pull up stakes and move to safer ground. Now, if all this seems a little on either side of believable, and no doubt Jim Wardner would be the first to admit to the possibility, consider that it was small potatoes compared to the latter half of his life in which Jim found himself in numerous remarkable (and reasonably well documented) circumstances in which he invariably landed on his feet, sometimes very rich, sometimes flat broke, but always with an eye to the next card in the deck. Next Week: Jim Wardner, the National Candy Bank, Black Cats and a Jackass.

After escaping Hitmen, Ice look to cage Tigers TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

On paper, the matchup seemed a little unbalanced. That didn’t seem to matter, as the sixthseed Kootenay Ice upset the third-seed Calgary Hitmen in six games to advance to the second round of the WHL playoffs. Calgary featured NHL prospects such as Greg Chase (Oilers), Brady Brassart (Wild), Kenton Helgesen (Ducks), Jaynen Rissling (Capitals), Chris Driedger (Senators) and Alex Roach (Kings), while the Ice only have one in goaltender Mackenzie Skapski (Rangers). Kootenay handled all that in stride, outscoring the Hitmen 27-26 in a wild series to earn their first playoff round win in two years. “The bottom line is, we won,” said Ice head coach Ryan McGill. “We won a pivotal

game in Game Four, to start and because of the high-scoring game in Game Three (a 7-6 OT loss), we could’ve very easily taken a back seat to them.

“We haven’t played well in their building, and that will be the key to the series. We need to play well in their building and we need to forget about our last series right away, because it’s going to be a different animal.” Ryan McGill “We didn’t, which is what our team has done all year, we’ve been very resilient and to tie the series going back to Calgary, I think our group felt that our

physical play had set the table for Game Five. “With the big lead in Game Five, they put some pressure on us, but I think that was a situation of us scoring at the end of the period and losing our focus a little bit in the fact that we’d never been in a three-goal lead situation before.” Game Six featured the emotional return of Ice player Tim Bozon, who had been in a hospital in Saskatoon for the last month battling meningitis. Bozon participated in game-day preparations before dropping the puck in a ceremonial face-off in front of the largest crowd in seven years. “I think that it was one of those games that if you got off to a good start, we knew what the outcome was going to be,” added McGill. The Ice split with the Hitmen at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, doing the

won, and closed it out at home for Game Six. They have a new opponent in the Medicine Hat Tigers, who went through the Swift Current Broncos in six games as well, and will open the series on the road on Saturday night. Like the Hitmen, the Ice split the regularseason series with the Tigers, as each team won three games, all of which came on home ice. Starting, and winning, in Medicine Hat, is the first big challenge. “They’re a very, very good, defensive-minded team that has a really, really, quick transition game that comes at you with speed in the neutral zone,” said McGill. “We haven’t played well in their building, and that will be the key to the series. “We need to play well in their building and we need to forget about our last series right away, because it’s going to be a different animal. “We’re going to be playing a team that is very structured, very committed to making you make mistakes and turn the puck over, and we’re going to have to be just as committed.” The beauty of the playoffs is that each new series is a chance to hit the reset button,

the Ice coach added. “No matter how many rounds you win, when you go into Game One, you’re starting over and it’s a different mindset,” McGill said. “You have to clear yourself, refocus and get to work. There’s no such thing as momentum from series to series. I think what has happened is, you got to make sure you’re consistent in your play.” It’s been a seven-day break in WHL action for the Ice, but they have also practiced three times this week in preparation for their new opponents. Sam Reinhart and Jaedon Descheneau co-lead the WHL postseason scoring race at 17 points, while Trevor Cox has the most points for the Tigers at 10. Cox, along with Curtis Valk and Cole Sanford, form Medicine Hat’s top line. In the defensive corps, Dylan Bredo is the top-scoring rearguard, while Tommy Vannelli is a signed prospect with the St. Louis Blues. One unknown factor for the Ice heading into Saturday is the goaltending. Mackenzie Skapski was pulled twice in the series with the Hitmen, and Wyatt Hoflin closed out Game Four, following up with a pair of wins after starting in

the next two games. Even though Skapski had a tough series, he’s been a workhorse for the Ice this year, with 28 wins in 53 games, including a tengame win streak during a stretch in the second half of the season. McGill admits he doesn’t know which one is going to get the job yet, but he has been keeping a close eye on both during practices this week. However, he notes that both are capable. “I would never say that we have two goalies if I didn’t have confidence in them,” McGill said. “Lots of confidence in both guys.” NOTES: Jaedon Descheneau was named the WHL Player of the Week on Monday, which was followed up by CHL Player of the Week on Tuesday. In naming him for the award, the WHL and CHL noted his performance of seven goals and eight assists in four games during the series with the Hitmen. The Edmonton Oil Kings and the Brandon Wheat Kings will face each other in the other Eastern Conference semifinal. In the Western Conference, the Portland Winterhawks and the Victoria Royals will go at it, while the Kelowna Rockets will take on the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Third MMA border battle set Fight night returns to Cranbrook with the Memorial Arena hosting Battle for the Border 3 Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor

Fight night is back. The third instalment of Battle for the Border is fast approaching, as local and international MMA fighters will be returning to the octagon in Cranbrook on Saturday, April 12th at 7 p.m. Organized by H&M Productions, the event is shifting to the Memorial Arena, and will be featuring some high profile bouts, according to Isaac Hockley. “We’ve gained the [MMA] world’s attention with it, because of our main event and our comain event,” said Hockley. “There’s a lot of topMMA guys in the world—the UFC’s watching really, really closely to see who’s going to win the main event, because whoever wins the main event, pretty much as a ticket to fight in Vancouver, which is pretty cool.” The main event will feature Mike Kent (10-4) representing Canada going up against Alfonso Gonzales (4-0) who trains out of Brazil.

“This guy’s a destroyer,” said Hockley. “He went 10-0 as an amateur and now he’s a pro, so the main event is gonna be scary. These guys are bangers.” Another highly anticipated fight on the professional card will include ex-UFC fighter Cody McKenzie (14-4) challenging Mark Dobie (5-6) in the 18-pound catchweight. Other pro fights of note is Fernie’s Jordan Tracey (3-3) taking on Dan Amyotte (1-0), in a heavyweight bout and Cranbrook’s Adam Wills

(0-0) facing Cleve Bentley (0-0) in the 155pound division. The amateur card will have some notable fights as well, which is highlighted by local Donovan Hack (4-0) challenging Ryan Rohovic (4-0) for a fiveround title fight. Hack, fighting out of the Rocky Mountain Academy of Martial Arts, is undefeated, while Rohovich is an amateur champion out of Saskatchewan. It will be the first time in front of the home crowd for Hack, who

was slated to be in the previous Battle for the Border events, said Hockley. “The last two fight nights he tried to fight in Cranbrook, but both of his opponents ended up getting hurt, so this is his first time fighting at home,” he said. Another local fighter is Dustin Luke, who will be fighting in the heavyweight division against Russia’s Yuri Gromochikhin. “Yuri is six feet and he has to drop weight to get to 265 so he’s a monster of a guy. That’s going

to be a big stand up war for Dustin,” said Hockley. Tickets are on sale at Denham Ford and Deweys Pub in Cranbrook and Rude Boy Tattoos and Piercings in Kimberley. Anyone interested in a VIP ringside table can contact Hockley directly at 250-421-4935.

added four more points in the fourth end to put the game out of reach. In the afternoon draw, Scotland was out of playoff contention but still gave Koe a tough test. The veteran skip took the lead for the first time in the sixth end with a draw for two points. He sealed the win with a runback double takeout in the 10th end. “It seems like all of our games, either we’ve won easy or lost easy,” Koe said. “So it’s good for us to have a battle, tied up or close the whole way through, and to pull it out with a shot in the 10th feels good.” Norway (10-1) closed with a 7-6 extra-end victory over Switzerland’s Peter De Cruz. “Now we’ve got two chances to go to the final,” Ulsrud said. “I’ve never been world champion, so that’s my dream.” The Swiss team rebounded for an 8-5 win over the United States in the evening draw to earn the third seed with a 7-4 record. Sweden and Japan also finished at 7-4 and will play a tiebreaker for the other spot in the 3-4 game. The Czech Republic and host China were tied in sixth place at 6-5. Germany was next at 5-6, followed by the United States and Scotland at 3-8. Russia and Denmark were tied for last place at 2-9.

BEIJING - Canada’s Kevin Koe swept his games Thursday to qualify for the 1-2 Page Playoff game at the world men’s curling championship. Koe and his Calgarybased team opened with an 11-5 win over Germany’s John Jahr at Capital Gymnasium and then locked up second place with a 7-5 victory over Scotland’s Ewan MacDonald. “We woke up today just worried about making sure that we made the playoffs,” Koe said. “We lose that game and we could be in a tiebreaker or something. The big thing was just to win and get in the playoffs and if we were in the 3-4 game, that was fine with us. We’ve done it before. “But to get in the 1-2 game with an extra life, that’s a bonus for sure.” The winner of Saturday’s 1-2 game will advance straight to Sunday’s final. The loser will play the winner of the 3-4 Page Playoff game in the semifinal. The semifinal winner will play for gold and the loser will fall into the bronze-medal game against the 3-4 loser. Koe built a big early lead in the opening game after German fourth Felix Schulze crashed his last stone on a guard in the second end. That gave Canada a steal of four and Koe

Be assertive to help avoid bad matches Hi Wendy: I don’t know if you can help me or not. My sister told me about you last year and I started reading your column and appreciate your talent. I have been through numerous relationships and most of them are abusive. I am not a fighter and I tend to give in when anyone becomes aggressive. I am tired of meeting these men and then leaving them because I have been beaten down. In my last relationship, I found out he was cheating on me. I don’t have problems leaving these men I have been with; I have the problem of constantly picking the same type of man. Can you ask your guides if I will meet someone in the future who is a nice man and not an aggressive person who’s controlling? Can you tell me why I keep meeting the same man and not learning my lesson? I can’t seem to help myself and I have been to counsellors with not good results. I would appreciate any help you can give me. Feeling Humble

Dear Feeling Humble: The reason why you keep picking the same type of man over and over again is: a) lack of knowledge on how to set boundaries and being assertive; b) you have contamination in your aura and the issues of the trauma of your individual relationships with these men have not been addressed; c) you have a bad attitude. Let me explain the first two statements so you know ASK what I am talking WENDY about. What does being Wendy assertive mean? It Evano means respecting your own opinions and views on life and respecting the other person’s views and opinions they have on life. Where the difficulty arises and it becomes quite toxic is when one or both parties starts bullying because they want to control the other person’s thoughts. When this happens you should recognize and acknowledge that you do not want to fight with this person. Realize he is being a bully and you state that to the person and walk away from the argument. When you walk away from the other person who is a control freak

Kimberley

this will make them angry because they realize that you are walking away empowered. You have made a statement and you have set a boundary and control freaks or bullies don’t like that. You don’t need to feel guilty about walking away. What you are showing the other person is you are in control of your life and you do not deserve to be abused by stating what you feel and you don’t want to argue. You have never developed or set up boundaries in your life of what you want and don’t want in a relationship or how you want to be treated. You don’t want to be assertive; you act like a victim and get the pay off that you are the good girl and he is the bad guy. The result is people feel sorry for you. The downside of that is people that are around you start to get tired of the same old story you keep telling them. These people start to lose their patience with you because you don’t want to try to learn and get better. The “I can’t do it” syndrome on your part can be very toxic, not only for yourself but those around you. The second point I want to explain to you is, what is an aura? An aura is kind of like an energy force

ial Vis ito r Gu ide 20 14 - 20 15 Of fic yo u! for Fre e

field around your body. Your aura can become contaminated with all the negative events that have happened in your life. Realize that like energy attracts unto like energy; opposites do not attract. This means if you walk into a room and there are 15 men in that room and four are controllers and bullies then those four men will gravitate towards you, as you will towards them, because of the molecular contamination in your aura. The way to get rid of this problem is to address each issue you have with the men you were with and have closure and understand how you were “sitting” emotionally at that time when you met each of these men. Then do a good aura cleaning and grounding exercise daily for about one year. Each person’s timeframe is different for doing these exercises depending on the amount of contamination that is in the aura. I have done experimentation on aura cleaning and grounding exercises and I have found the two I have taught in my class work great. If you are interested you may contact me and I will give them to you. You need to do the work in order to become stronger for yourself and

raise your self-esteem. You want to have a knight coming to your emotional rescue without doing any of the work. Well, it isn’t going to happen, girl. Your God, guides and angels cannot help you if you don’t try to put a little effort in wanting to learn this lesson and get better equipped so that you are not a victim in these relationships. When you help yourself the heavenly beings will help you. This is why you keep meeting the same men and walking down the same path. Do the work – reap the success; it’s pretty simple. Don’t feel bad; there are so many people that have the same negative attitude that you do. They keep waiting and hoping their life will change for the better without trying to help themselves. This is what I call a very bad attitude. You will be meeting another man within the next six months but I fear it will be the same old scenario. He has brown hair, quite heavily built and is aggressive. I don’t like the energy of this man that my guides are showing to me. Wendy

WorkSafeBC levies $1M in fines for Burns Lake blast C ANADIAN PRESS

VICTORIA — British Columbia’s workers compensation board has imposed more than $1 million in fines and fees against the owners of the Burns Lake sawmill that exploded, killing two workers and injuring 19 others. WorkSafeBC charged Hampton Affiliates a penalty of $97,000, and a so-called claims cost levy of almost $915,000. The levy authorizes the agency to collect compensation for death or injury, and the money will be deposited into an accident fund. However, WorkSafeBC says the total claim associated with the incident is nearly $5.2 million.

Smoke rises as police tape surrounds the Burns Lake sawmill in January 2012. “The dollar value of a penalty or levy does not and cannot reflect the loss of lives

and the pain and suffering of workers and families,’’ a WorksafeBC news release

said. Maureen Luggi, whose husband Robert was killed in the January 2012 explosion and fire, said the fine isn’t acceptable to her and she still wants an independent inquiry into the cause of the explosion that destroyed the mill. Carl Charlie, 42, was also killed in what some of the surviving workers described as a terrifying inferno. Employers can appeal a penalty or claims cost, WorkSafeBC said. “Others, including workers, an owner, a supplier, a union or a member of a deceased worker’s family may also request a review and appeal of an administrative penalty or a claims cost levy.’’

Late last month, the B.C. government announced a safety plan would be put in place to try to prevent other sawmills from exploding. The government said the number of inspectors would be doubled to 20. The multi-point strategy is aimed at limiting the potential for combustible dust and making sure mills comply with safety regulations. Part of the program includes a dust mitigation and control audit, to ensure best practices, provincewide. A report issued in January said the mill explosion could have been prevented. Investigators found the company knew it had an inadequate dust collection system, even after a similar explosion and

fire a year earlier. The mill had an ineffective inspection and maintenance system and inadequate supervision, the report said. No charges were laid in the blast, in part, because the Crown said investigators failed to obtain search warrants or warn witnesses of their charter rights before taking their statements. The Crown also said a number of other charges weren’t considered because of inadmissibliity of evidence. Just months after the Burns Lake mill was flattened, the Lakeland sawmill in Prince George exploded in fire, killing Alan little, 43 and 46-year-old Glen Roche.

Man jailed for threatening to kill people at Stampede Bill Gravel and Canadian Press

CALGARY — A man who a judge says has an “obsession with warfare and weaponry’’ has been sent to jail for threatening to kill people with a machine gun at the Calgary Stampede last summer. Patrick Deegan, 29, was sentenced Thursday to two years less a day after admitting in January that he uttered death threats and illegally possessed a firearm. “We now sadly live in a world where threats like these have to be taken seriously,’’ said provincial court Judge Joanne Durant. A sinister email Deegan sent to the Calgary Fire Department last spring was “not a fanciful threat,’’ the judge said. “I do not accept this was an impulsive act.’’ Durant pointed to terrorist acts such as the 9-11 Twin Towers attack in New York and the bombing at the Boston Marathon last year and said the public can no longer take safety for granted. Deegan admitted he

sent the email from his account to the fire department on May 26, 2013. The email warned there was going to be an attack at the Stampede that July and that there would be many casualties. “There is going to be a machine-gun attack at the Calgary Stampede this year,’’ the email read. “Two MG-52s rated at 1800 rpm. There will be over 1,000+ casualties.’’ Deegan said in the email that the guns could fire off more than 1,000 rounds before malfunctioning. At the time the email

was sent, Deegan was on a 12-month peace bond related to domestic violence. One of the bond’s conditions was that he was not allowed to purchase or possess any sort of firearm. The email prompted a police investigation that led to the homes and vehicles of Deegan, his girlfriend and his parents. Court heard police found an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a Lee Enfield bolt-action rifle and a Norinco semi-automatic rifle at the home of Deegan’s parent. Judge Durant pointed to psychiatric evalua-

out the threat. The words for me were all the more serious and terrifying because there was substance behind them.’’ Deegan read a tearful statement to the court before his sentencing. “On the day I dispatched that email I breached the trust of my family and the public. It was something that I am

truly sorry for,’’ he said. “I bear full accountability for these actions as a whole. If I did not do this crime, then I would be living at home with full autonomy. I stand culpable and can no longer bear being a burden to society.’’ An extra month was tacked onto his sentence because he breached his peace

bond. With credit given for nine months he has already spent in custody, his remaining sentence is just under 16 months. He was also sentenced to three years probation, faces a 10year prohibition on owning a firearm and is banned for life from having a restricted weapon.

Vast ocean found on Saturn’s moon Marcia Dunn Associated Press

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — Scientists have uncovered a vast ocean beneath the icy surface of Saturn’s little moon Enceladus. Italian and American researchers made the discovery using Cassini, a NASA-European spacecraft still exploring Saturn and its rings 17 years after its launch from Cape Canaveral. Their findings were announced Thursday. This new ocean of liquid water — as big as or even bigger than North America’s Lake Superior — is centred at the south pole of Enceladus and could encompass much if not most of the moon. Enceladus (ehn-SEHL’uh-duhs) is about 310 miles across. The data do not show if the ocean extends to the north pole, said the lead researcher, Luciano Iess of Sapienza University of Rome. At the very least, it’s a regional sea some 25 miles deep under miles-thick ice. On Earth, it would stretch from our South Pole up to New Zealand — at the very least. Cassini’s rudimentary instruments also cannot determine whether the moon’s ocean

harbours any form of life. Another mission using more sophisticated instruments is needed to make that search. This latest discovery makes the interior of Enceladus “a very attractive potential place to look for life,” said Cornell University planetary scientist Jonathan Lunine, who took part in the study. Back in 2005, Cassini detected a plume streaming from cracks in the south polar region. Scientists suspected these jets of salty water vapour and ice — containing some light organic molecules like methane — might come from a subsurface ocean. On Thursday, they confirmed its presence. Their findings appear in the journal Science. Cassini provided gravity measurements from three close fly-bys of Enceladus from 2010 to 2012. The Doppler data indicated a dense material beneath the surface of the Saturn’s moon Enceladus. south pole, most likely liquid water. Titan, the largest of Saturn’s dozens of The ocean is believed to be sandwiched between miles of surface ice and a rocky moons, is believed to have a global ocean. Evidence points to oceans inside the giant core. Enceladus is hardly the only moon in the Jupiter moons of Callisto and Ganymede. And Jupiter’s Europa also has a hidden resersolar system with a subsurface sea.

Willie Nelson’s stuffed armadillo mascot is returned ASSOCIATED PRESS

HENDERSON, Nev. — A stuffed armadillo that serves as an onstage mascot for country music legend Willie Nelson has been returned after being kidnapped from a Las Vegas-area show. Officials at the Westin Lake Las Vegas resort in Henderson say the critter, named Ol’ Dillo, vanished while audience members were greeting Nelson after a Monday night concert. Westin marketing di-

rector Matt Boland says Nelson’s crew called in the middle of the night from the road, asking the resort to scour surveillance footage after the mascot went missing. Boland says he was outside the hotel Tuesday morning when an apologetic man drove up and handed him a shoebox and instructions to return it to Nelson. Boland says the armadillo was inside and was sent to the singer in California.

LONDON — Schools have closed their playgrounds and ambulance staff are reporting a surge in breathing problems as smog blankets parts of England for a second day. Russian envoy: US officials should ‘do yoga’ Queen Elizabeth II meets with Pope ASSOCIATED PRESS

MOSCOW — A senior Russian diplomat says U.S. officials should do yoga and watch TV comedy series to ease what he calls their irrational fixation on punishing Russia over Ukraine. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov’s comments to the Interfax news agency Thursday reflected simmering tensions between Moscow and Washington over Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The U.S. and the EU have slapped

members of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s entourage with travel bans and asset freezes. Ryabkov warned that Moscow may take retaliatory steps, but he didn’t elaborate. Ryabkov said the U.S. got “fixated” on halting co-operation with Russia. He said his “advice to the U.S. partners is to spend more time outdoors, do yoga ... and watch TV comedy series” instead of “childish whims, tears and hysterics that won’t help.”

VATICAN CITY — Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has paid a private call on Pope Francis at the Vatican, making him the fifth pontiff she has met.

She arrived Thursday afternoon wearing a lilac-colored spring coat and matching hat that are practically the same colours as the wisteria blooming over much of the Italian cap-

ital. The monarch, accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, was ushered into a small room near the Vatican’s public audience hall for the 30-minute meeting.

Previously, Elizabeth had met with four pontiffs, starting with Pius XII in 1951, a year before her accession to the throne. Earlier in the day, Elizabeth lunched with

lems. World Health Organization says air pollution kills 7 million people a year globally.

Scientists create diagram of mouse brain Malcolm Ritter Associated Press

NEW YORK — Scientists have recently created a detailed, three-dimensional wiring diagram of the

mouse brain. That should help researchers seek clues about how the human brain works in health and disease. It’s the first brainwide wiring diagram for

a mammal at such a level of detail. While it doesn’t reveal every connection between each of the rodent’s 75 million brain cells, it shows how parts of the brain are con-

nected. The work was described online Wednesday in the journal Nature by Hongkui Zeng and colleagues at the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle,

Washington. To create the diagram, scientists combined data from more than 1,000 mouse brains, each of which was divided into 140 slices.

Tonight: Go with tradition. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) Pressure seems to build quickly, and it could put you in an uncomfortable situation. Be aware of what others think, especially someone you need to answer to. Avoid overspending when trying to straighten out a problem. Tonight: A force to be dealt with. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22) Confirm plans. You might need

to make a long-distance call or two. Someone might not be as responsive as you would like. Is this a pattern? You might want to resolve the issue or perhaps make an adjustment to your plans. Tonight: Opt for something new. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) A partner might be demanding, as he or she seems to need a lot from you. It’s up to you to decide whether this is manipulation. Express your irritation without upsetting the applecart. Avoid being standoffish or withdrawn. Tonight: A close encounter. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) Others do whatever they need to do to get your attention. You could be shocked by what goes on. Be careful with your funds, as someone you deal with might not be on the up and up. A friend could be too assertive for your taste. Tonight: So many invitations. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) Pace yourself, and establish some much-needed boundaries. What you do with a sit-

uation could impress others. Realize that you don’t need to start a disagreement -- you just need to support yourself in what you want. Be sensitive to the alternatives. Tonight: In the limelight. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Be playful and forthright in what you do. Somehow, you will need to open up to the lighter side of life. You hear so many problems from so many people that you could start to feel down. Listen to what someone is sharing with you. Tonight: Time to frolic. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You’ll want to accomplish more; however, a loved one could be very distracting. Listen to news with an open mind and a more caring attitude. Do not fall prey to someone’s manipulation. Honor a change. Tonight: Say “yes” to being out and about. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: In the past four years, my wife has become friendly with a male co-worker. The two of them phone each other often and send an enormous number of text messages, often more than 100 a week. These calls and text messages are not work related. At her mother’s house, she disappears into the bathroom for a long stretch, and when I check our cellphone account, I see that she was on the phone with him during that time. I also have overheard parts of their conversations in which she complains that he hasn’t made enough personal time for her. This guy picks her up on holiday mornings and takes her out for breakfast. In fact, any day they have off of work, he comes to our house while I’m at my job. During this same period, my wife changed her hairstyle, purchased blouses that show more cleavage and started wearing thong panties. She insists that she and this co-worker are just friends, but with all of these things going on, I find it hard to believe there isn’t more to it. Our children are grown and married. We have discussed getting a divorce on multiple occasions. My wife wants to keep the house, but can’t afford to pay me for my half of it. I have tried to move forward with a separation, but she fights me every step of the way. I don’t know what to do anymore. Any suggestions? -- Had Enough Dear Had: You are moving toward a divorce, but would you rather your wife stop seeing the other guy so you can reconcile? Would she give him up? If you are considering a reconciliation, insist that your wife go with you for counseling and see what can be repaired. Otherwise, talk to an attorney about a legal separation. Your wife’s cooperation, while helpful, is not a necessity, provided money doesn’t become the sole focus. Dear Annie: I’ve been seeing “Charles” for two years, and I am at my wits’ end with his eating habits. He just turned 21, but eats like a 5-year-old. During a meal, he chews with his mouth open, smacks his lips and speaks with his mouth full. He makes a giant mess and refuses to wipe his hands if they get food on them, saying, “It doesn’t bother me.” Charles frequently attends family get-togethers at my house, where it is impossible to ignore the lip-smacking and open-mouth chewing. Both of my sisters and my parents have said something confidentially to me regarding Charles’ eating habits. I once or twice kindly asked when we were alone whether he could chew with his mouth closed. He laughed it off, saying his parents tried to teach him table manners when he was younger, but they didn’t stick. Charles just started a new job where lunch meetings are frequent. I’d hate for him to embarrass himself in front of his bosses. How do I address the situation? Apparently, my kind requests are not getting the job done. -- Fed Up in Wisconsin Dear Fed: Don’t be so kind. Explain to Charles that most civilized people are disgusted by such habits, and that he risks his reputation (and promotions) at work if he cannot demonstrate basic table manners. Ask whether he’d like you to sign him up for an etiquette class. That boy needs serious help. We hope he has the intelligence to admit it. Dear Annie: This is for the son who called his dad cheap. My father grew up during the Depression and often went to bed hungry. He didn’t buy anything unless he needed it. He saved for a rainy day, and I am so grateful he did. It allowed us to put my mother into an excellent nursing home. He wanted us to never be as poor as he had been. Thank you, Dad. -- Your Child Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Obituary William (Bill) Karmas

William (Bill) Karmas passed away peacefully at the Kimberley Special Care Home (The Pines) with his family by his side on March 30, 2014. Bill was born March 25, 1922 in Elk Point, Alberta. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army and served from 1944 to 1947. He met Mary (Sorochan) in Edmonton and they married June 2, 1951. Bill and Mary moved to Yellowknife where they lived from 1951 to 1963. Bill worked as a hoist man at Con Mine during this time. From 1963 to 1965, Bill was the co-owner/manager of Vermilion Bowl, in Vermilion, Alberta. The family then moved to Marysville. Bill resumed working for Cominco/ Teck as an operator at the fertilizer plant, retiring in 1980. Bill was a founding member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Elks Club in Yellowknife and continued this involvement after moving to BC. He enjoyed curling, camping, travelling, playing cribbage, gardening and wood working. The hobby that gave him the greatest joy was searching for rocks as he walked many miles on the nature path linking Marysville to Kimberley. He transformed those rocks into little painted penguins, turtles, whales and especially lady bugs. He always had a pocketful of lady bugs to give to people he met along the nature path and in the community. Many of Bill’s lady bugs are in homes, gardens and businesses in the area. Bill is survived by his wife, Mary, daughter Adelle, grandsons Jordan and Evan; daughter Lorri (Jim Bennett), grandson Andrew; sister Mary Marusyk (formerly of Kimberley); and numerous nieces and nephews. The family sincerely thanks Dr. Haiduk, staff of the Kimberley Medical Clinic, and especially the staff of The Pines for their compassionate and tender care of Bill and kind support of his family during the past two years. You all have been wonderful. At Bill’s request, there will be no funeral service. Those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Bill may do so to the Kimberley Nature Park Society, Box 398, Kimberley, BC, V1A 2Y9.

Only with a daily paper are you able to choose to do an ad and run with it in two days, and reach a sizable portion of the population, in a fairly mass, fairly broad and fairly fast way. That’s a set of qualities very few other media can match.â€? FOR DAILY DELIVERY OF YOUR LOCAL NEWSPAPER CALL US!
