County’s offer to purchase land for senior’s lodge on table By Treena Mielke The mayor’s refusal to speak out about plans for the location of a proposed new seniors lodge has landed him in loads of hot water, but the Ponoka county reeve says he was well within his rights to remain mum on the subject. At a public hearing held last week, Mayor Rick Pankiw said he did not know what type

of facility was to go on a parcel of land up for rezoning. Pankiw admits he did know what the plans were, but was not legally able to disclose that information because of stipulations laid out in the municipal government act. “In the heat of the moment I chose my words wrong,” said Pankiw later. We as a town did know what was going on, but according to the MGA we could not disclose

A new season is just around the corner Spring is certainly out there somewhere! It’s an exciting season of hope and newness. Soon our wondering eyes will be able to feast on tender green shoots of grass interspersed with yellow dandelions playing a haphazard game of ticktacktoe all over our good old prairie soil. Of course, none of that has happened yet because we are all still buried under tons and tons of snow, just as we have been for far, far too long. That’s all gonna change next week acTreena Mielke cording to the weathOn The Other Side erman who just has to be right for once, I’m thinking. He told us, and I want desperately to believe him, that spring, which has shown up on the calendar, but not in our lives, is about to descend this week. I, for one, am almost ridiculously happy about that. The other day, I got tired of winter and doing the dishes and being all grown up and mature, which, in reality, happens more often than I care to admit. But luckily, on that day I had a couple of playmates with me who didn’t have to worry about being all grown up because they aren’t. They’re only five and two. “Let’s go splash in some mud puddles, boys,” I coaxed. “Then we can come in and eat cookies and ice cream.” The last was an afterthought. I know their mom had said something about healthy snacks like fruit and yogurt, so we would have to eat fast before she came to pick them up, and caught us in the act.

The boys, who will willingly follow me anywhere, because they think I am the grown up and should know what I’m doing because, after all, I am their grandma, did just that. They followed me. I showed them how to jump hard on a mud puddle covered with a thin veneer of ice and how satisfying it is to hear and see the ice crackle, and in the process, get a little bit wet. We spent a satisfying half hour or so splashing about in all the mud puddles we could find and then we came in; cold, wet and completely delighted with ourselves. The mom came to get her two little mud puddle splashers while they were still digging their spoons into that chocolate chunk ice cream that is so creamy and delicious you just know it must have at least a day’s worth of calories in every single spoonful. I was appropriately apologetic about the type of childcare I had provided for the boys. I apologized about their wet jeans and sodden

boots. I shook my head mutely when one little guy (the one that is a tattletale) said they had three cookies each. The mom gathered up her precious charges and took them home and I made a beeline for the couch. My goodness, heaven knows I needed my rest. But before I fell asleep I did a quick rewind in my mind of the afternoon. And I smiled. I smiled because even when the winter is long, the heating bill exorbitant, the sink plugged up and the car heater pathetic, one can be grateful that spring is waiting to be reborn. And one can be grateful that as long as there are mud puddles there will be little boys to delight in splashing in them. I must tell the mom to send rubber boots next time, I think, as I drift off to sleep. And, I must tell her to send a pair for grandma, too.

West Country Outreach students off to California By Treena Mielke Students from West Country Outreach School are about to embark on an exciting journey and they even have new jackets to wear on the trip. Seven students, principal Alva Holliday and teacher David Robertson will leave for California on April 12 for 10 days of site-seeing, tours and lots of just plain fun. Robertson, who has worked hard to make the trip become a reality, is looking forward to the experience. “It has been a dream of mine to do this for my whole career,” he said. “It’s been exhausting, definitely a labour of love to put it all together, but its definitely been worth it.” Students from the Outreach will meet up with a group of students from Sydney, Nova Scotia will on the trip. Robertson sees the students combined experience as a positive, noting it will give the teens a chance to make new friends and learn about another province. Each day of the 10-day excursion promises a new adventure. On the first day students will fly to San Francisco where they will participate in a tour of the city and a cable car ride. Day two will see them continuing to tour San Francisco including the Golden Gate Park, the Gold Gate Bridge, Pacific Heights, Fisherman’s Wharf and last, but certainly not least, take part in a tour of Alcatraz. On the third day they will drive the California Coast to Los Angeles.

Day four will see them touring again, checking out Hollywood Bowl, the Star Walk of Fame, Mann’s Chinese Theatre, Rodeo Drive, Venice Beach and Santa Monica Pier. Day five will include a trip to Universal Studios and the next day they will visit the San Diego Zoo. A tour of San Diego including Balboa Park will be part of day seven’s agenda as well as a trip to Coronado island, Gas Lamp Quarter and Sea World. On the final two days of the excursion they will have fun in Disneyland. Students participating in the trip studied tourism and photography and studied social studies 10 and 20. They also participated in fundraising events to help make the trip financially feasible. Robertson is grateful to superintendent Larry Jacobs and the Wolf Creek school board for their support and encouragement. “They were not just supportive, they were enthusiastic as well,” he said. Land deal in works for senior’s lodge Continued from page 1 “The town has nothing to do with it (the purchase),” he said. “Negotiations on the Johnson’s property have regretfully ceased and we are moving forward,” he said, noting that negotiations with Stan Cummings began about two weeks after the Johnson Estates deal was closed. McLaughlin said he sees the land purchase as a positive, noting some people are opposed to the proposed lodge being built south of Highway 53. “That is not a deal breaker,” he said. “And there will be positives and negatives no matter where you put it. All we’re (the county) is trying to do is purchase a piece of land, gift it to Rimoka and have the town prosper from it.” Council has given second reading to the rezoning of the 8.4 acres now zoned low density housing to IPU (institutional public use). In order for the land deal to move ahead, the parcel needs to be rezoned. Land zoned IPU may be used for such facilities as schools, churches, libraries, group homes, hospitals, cemeteries, playgrounds, golf courses, sporting facilities and storm water detention areas. Services to the land earmarked for the seniors’ facility are accessible through the property, but will need to be tied in. Council will address the issue of third reading at its April 14 meeting.

Because we could not encourage residents to join our organization, we have had to close our doors; dollars to help out our communities will now no longer be available. Through the years we have supported curling rinks, arenas, ball diamonds, campgrounds, playgrounds, libraries, hospitals, team uniforms, players’ equipment, food banks, seniors’ complexes, community halls, museums, ambulances, fire department, fire assistance, medical assistance, travel for individuals’ education/sports to name a few.

Gerald Peterson, and lead Cindy Irwin won the ‘C’ event by defeating the local Urs Mueller bunch 6-5 without having to throw her last rock in the eighth end. There were door prizes galore for curlers. Prizes were cash paid after each win.

The ladies are now busy selling raffle tickets at the Rimbey Co-op for a quilt, afghan, tool box and water fountain. These draws will be made at the ladies tea and bake sale to be held in May. The story will be told from a daughter and mother’s perspective and promises to provide insight to a very real problem that can happen to anyone. Const. Jonathan Maillet of the RCMP will also present an overview on drugs in Rimbey. This event is to be held at 7:30 p.m. at Neighborhood Place located at 4907-49th Street. Friday is the day when parents can participate in ‘Child Find’ and have their youngsters identified with photos and fingerprints. This activity will take place at the Rimbey municipal Library and lunch will be provided. Information about car seat safety will also be offered at that time. Saturday, girls will have an opportunity to learn about self-defense. This program is available for all ages and will take place in the Lion’s Room (north side of the recreation centre) from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. Call 403-843-8494 to register. Patricia Jones, assistant co-ordinator for Rimbey & District Victim Services said the week is a great opportunity to increase awareness of Victim Services and she encourages the public to attend the events and activities. Rimbey & District Victim Services act as a liaison between the RCMP and victims of crime and trauma. They provide support information and referral services to alleviate the impact of crime and tragedy on victims. Rimbey VSU was incorporated in 2003 and is one of 119 police based victim services in Alberta. Services are free and confidential. To contact Rimbey Victim Services call 403-843-8484. Referrals are also received from other agencies and self-referrals are accepted. Victim Service programs handle on average 31,000 new cases in a year in Alberta. More than half of the cases involve assisting victims of violent crime. Each year, Victim Serv ices programs provide service to around 38,000 Albertans. Victim Services is made possible through the volunteerism of approximately 1,640 volunteers and board members who contribute about 230,000 hours per year. was an opportunity to reach into a parenting toolbox she didn’t even know existed. Fryk, the mother of eight-month-old Emerson, a sweet little boy with an engaging toothless grin, held her baby through most of the sessions, but when he became too restless and wanted to check things out, helpful volunteers were there to take over for a few minutes. The young mom said she found the session entitled ‘Kids Have Stress, Too,’ to be most helpful. “I found out he gets stressed too, even though he’s little,” she said. Fryk said she learned about the sessions from her mother who had seen poster advertising the event. “She thought it would be a good idea for me and it was. I would definitely go again. There’s lots of pressure to be a parent and it was certainly helpful.” Fryk plans to take an on-line course at Red Deer College and stay home with her baby. Debbie Oostindie, program co-ordinator for Sylvan Lake Early Child Development Coalition said she very much enjoyed the program. “Leanne and her team did an amazing job. Not only did she have great speakers, but the whole atmosphere was welcoming and child friendly.” Leanne Evans, program co-ordinator for Sylvan Lake Early Child Development Coalition who organized the event, said she is pleased with the feedback received from those in attendance. The only downside of the workshops was the attendance which was smaller than anticipated. “Parenthood is getting more demanding all the time and it’s good for parents to know they are not alone,” said Evans. “Suggestions as to how to

Modern blacksmith continues to keep craft alive while pursuing his hobby By Don Ahlquist Special to Rimbey Review

with Â a 90 pound head slammed into a 10 pound bar of semi-molten steel resting on the hammers bottom die. At every impact, a shower of sparks and red hot mill scale was ejected from the work piece. It sounded like a small cannon firing at a rate of about 200 detonations per minute. A bar of steel was on deck and glowingÂ bright orange inside the fire-brick lined walls of the forge. A steel rod about the diameter of a manâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s thumb was

GABRIELLAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S STORY Our family has always supported STARS through the calendar and lottery campaigns, but on April 20, 2010, the meaning of STARS in our life took on an entirely new meaning. It was early that morning that our daughter Gabriella was born by emergency Caesarean section at Red Deer Regional Hospital and at only 29 weeks gestation. She was tiny at just over 3 lbs and her lungs had not yet fully developed. There was such panic and fear that day that I remember only parts of it. One of the most distinct memories I have of that day was how quickly the STARS crew was there to help. I remember the sense of concern in the ICU that changed completely when the Ă&#x20AC; LJKW FUHZ DUULYHG EULQJLQJ D VHQVH of calm and purpose to the process. The crew had been mobilized from the Foothills Hospital before Gabriella was even born and included a ICU nurse, pediatric respiratory therapist and paramedics; a highly skilled group that operated with speed and precision to have Gabriellaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chest tube inserted and an IV line put into an arm that was no bigger than my thumb. The other most prominent memory I have is following the FUHZ WR WKH Ă&#x20AC; LJKW GHFN LQ 5HG 'HHU to watch Gabriella loaded into the helicopter. I will never forget the

pilot walking over to me and putting his hands on my shoulders. He said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dad, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to have your baby on the ground at Foothills Hospital in 25 minutes. You canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t beat us there, so take your time and drive safely.â&#x20AC;? Gabriella spent a total of 45 days in the hospital after she was born, until she was strong enough to come home. My experience in pediatric audiology in the past always had me wondering if there would be complications later in life, maybe with her vision, hearing or development. Today, as Gabriella turns 4 years old, she shows no effects of her early arrival. She is incredibly bright, already learning to read and write and normally developing in every way. She loves the outdoors and has always had a sense of adventure, and I often wonder if it has something to do with her start in life, riding in the helicopter when she was only minutes old. Today when we drive by the hospital, she always looks for the red helicopter and says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the helicopter Daddy? I think there are some tiny babies in there, just like me.â&#x20AC;? For that, we will always be truly thankful and a proud supporter of STARS Air Ambulance. Gabriella Towers STARS VIP

Each tong was designed by the blacksmith to grasp and maintain control of one of a wide variety of shapes and sizes of steel pieces undergoing the forging processes. This visit was very nostalgic for me. Sights, smells, sounds and even the tactile senses inspired a rich recall of childhood memories from my grandfatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s blacksmith shop. They say the most sophisticated method of commerce is barter and though very rare today, I can still remember my grandfather working on an agricultural implement in exchange for two chickens and a ham or some other equitable trade. Tim Turnbull is the proprietor and artisan of the â&#x20AC;&#x153;SIK-WERKSâ&#x20AC;? the facility we are visiting today. The shop is located on the west side of Gull Lake near Our Lady of Victory Church Camp. Tim earns his living as an oilfield welder, working on drilling rigs, compressor stations, pipelines, etc. Consequently he is free to express himself creatively in blacksmithing without having to rely on it as a source of income. During our visit, Tim provided us with some historic insight. Approximately 5200 years ago at the end of the Stone Age, the Bronze Age began. Bronze tools and weapons served the development of Mediterranean and European civilization and eventually escorted industry into the Iron Age at approximately 1400 to 1100 BC when the trade of Blacksmith (Dictionary defined as â&#x20AC;&#x153;a person who makes and repairs things in iron by handâ&#x20AC;?) essentially began. The terms â&#x20AC;&#x153;In ironâ&#x20AC;? and â&#x20AC;&#x153;buy handâ&#x20AC;? define the Â unique nature of blacksmithing. Continued on page 17

By Leah Trenson The Bluffton 4-H Club continues to have a great year! In 4-H our motto is ‘learn to do by doing.’ We are learning lots about beef cattle with our steer, heifer and cow/calf projects. Public speaking and community service are also important parts of 4-H. On January 25, some of our members attended the judging sessions at Camrose Bull Congress. On February 13 our club helped take down tables and chairs at the Rimbey Women’s Conference. Regional multi species judging was held at Lakedell on February 15. We judged horses, beef steers, dairy heifers, fleece, goats, hay, chips, saddles, shoes, and identified seeds as well as kitchen items. Congratulations to Tim Trenson who placed first for juniors. Zones Public speaking was on February 23 and everyone did awesome. The people who placed from our club were: Tim Trenson- 2nd junior, Sylvia Trautman- 1st intermediate, Leah Trenson- 3rd intermediate and Clinton Steeves- 1st senior.

The first and second placing moved to district where Tim placed fourth, Sylvia placed first and Clinton placed first. Clinton also placed second at Regionals so he will be attending Provincials. Congratulations Clinton!! We had our farm tour on March 2. Everyone’s calves are looking great. Thank you to Dan and Karen Skeels who hosted. On March 28 and 29 we helped Rimbey Neighborhood Place with Powerful Moms and Super Dads. We look forward to seeing you at our show and sale on May 11 and 12 at the Rimbey Agriplex.

SNIDER Gloria Jeanette Margaret LEWIS Marshall Roy Lewis of Rimbey Alberta passed away March 21, 2014 after a short illness at the Ponoka General Hospital at the age of 83. Marshall was born August 27,1930. He was born in Sherwood Oregon and came to Canada with his parents and his older sister at the age of 5. Family settled mostly in the Ponoka Area. Marshall worked at various jobs and settled at Rimbey gas plant for 22 1/2 years. He was united in marriage to Sadie Allison Lewis also of Rimbey for 61 1/2 years. They had 2 children David Marshall Lewis of Ponoka and Joyce Bergen Of Duchess Alberta. They had 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. Marshall was predeceased by his father Roy in 1979 and mother Elisie 1986 and by his sister Babe in 2010 and bother Bob in 1961. He was a loving and caring father who always wanted to help others out. Marshall and his wife liked to go camping and they both loved the outdoors and loved animals as well. Marshall requested there be no funeral services. If friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

It is with heavy hearts that on Wednesday, March 26th, 2014 we said goodbye to an exceptional lady; after a brief but valiant fight with cancer. She was someone that has touched many hearts and was the backbone of our family. Gloria was born on August 31, 1944 in Huntsville, Ont. where she grew up around her 6 brothers and sisters. She later went on to marry her soul mate, Irven. The two of them had many adventures together and spent their days hunting, fishing, gardening and time with family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband, Irven C. Snider, her children, Diane Handford (Neil); Kathy Whitfield (Terry); Irven P. Snider; and David Snider (Simone); along with 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters, brothers and cousins. She is preceded in death by parents, Archibald and Galdys Semple. An open house will be held in the near future. “She was a treasure that we all got to enjoy and now it has been lost, but with all treasures they rise again in our memories for us to enjoy, pause and smile again”
