Lost control
The male driver of a Honda Prelude, heading northbound on Petersen Road near Cheviot Road, collided head-on with a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze being driven by a female driver last Thursday around 6:30 p.m. Campbell River RCMP say the driver of the Prelude started to skid and was unable to regain control, crashing into the Cruze. The driver of the Prelude was ticketed with speeding relative to conditions. The accident occurred on a stretch of road that Coun. Ron Kerr has been advocating for improvements on for more than two years.

a tax increase or service arrangements. “Taxpayers in Area D outside the extension area will receive an approximate $34 per year tax increase to maintain service levels, however, under the Local Government Act, they do not have a vote on the boundary extension,” Hotsenpiller said. “As such, they are unable to directly affect the outcome.” The other electoral areas will also not have a say in the referendum but could face the following tax increases: $5.90 for the average tax payer in Area A; $10.52 in Area B (Cortes Island); and $9.58 in Area C (Quadra Island). Hotsenpiller said the regional district could consider reducing the pl an n i ng pro g r am , increasing taxes or a combination of both to address the shortfalls. As for the gas tax, the regional district
would lose $40,000 of its $450,000 gas tax transfer to Campbell River as a result of the regional district losing nine per cent of its rural area population to the city. The report, conducted by Circle Square Solutions consultants, also revealed the city’s boundary proposal would see the regional district lose 21 per cent of the Area D tax base – a number that exceeds the threshold for mitigation from the province to make up the lost tax dollars. According to the report, mitigation would come from the city, not the province. Impacts in the Area A, B, and C electoral areas, however, are below ministry triggers for mitigation but the report found the loss of gas tax monies, as well as a tax increase, will reduce the capacity of those areas to fund projects. The consultants suggested the regional district propose a three-year mitigation fund to phase

Dream trip ends in tragedy Paul Rudan CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
After retiring last fall, Patricia Root was on a dream motorcycle trip in Southern California when she was killed Sunday by another motorcyclist. Root, 62, was the former owner of Campbell River’s Merle Norman and had owned the cosmetics store for many years. “She owned it when it was still in the mall. Campbell River didn’t seem as big back then
and everyone seemed to know her…she was very well-loved in Campbell River,” said Root’s daughter Anita Wlasitz (nee Heinen). On Sunday, Root and her partner Warren Burd were wrapping up a fivemonth vacation in the Palm Springs area when the tragedy occurred around 1:50 p.m., near Joshua Tree National Park. According to the California Highway Patrol, Root was riding her Harley-Davidson – with Burd riding nearby –
when another motorcyclist, on a Yamaha sport bike, crossed over the centre line and collided head-on with her. Root was pronounced dead at the scene while the other rider, a 27-yearold man from Twentynine Palms, California, was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs where he later died of his injuries. His name was not released. Police do not suspect drugs or alcohol were factors in the fatal collision.
According to Wlasitz, Root arrived in Campbell River more than 30 years ago. She is survived by two children, two step-children, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. After selling the store, Root opened another business, Pat’s Fabulous Nails, and finally retired last October. Wlasitz said she was very much in love with Burd, a wellknown retired car dealer, and the two were having a wonderful time until the tragedy. “It was her dream come
true; to find love and travel,” said Wlasitz. In addition to motorcycling, she enjoyed spending winters in Mexico and was known for her volunteer work in Campbell River which included helping to feed the homeless, contributing to the women’s shelter and supporting the Red Hat Society. “Her two cats were her babies and she loved her grandkids,” said Wlasitz. A celebration of Root’s life will take place April 26, 1 p.m., at the Maritime Heritage Centre.

Tyler Pastuck and Derek Crowther have struck out on attempts to appeal their manslaughter convictions. In August 2013, the B.C. Court of Appeal upheld both convictions and last week, the Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the case. “We were denied leave to appeal,” said defence lawyer Robert Mulligan who represented Crowther. “They just say yes or no…(and) that’s usually the end of the road.” In December 2011, Pastuck and Crowther were convicted of manslaughter in the death of Christopher Smythe, 28. A third man, also in his 20s, was also charged, but died before the case
went to trial. On Feb. 27, 2010, Smythe attended a party at a Rockland Road townhouse which Pastuck was renting. In the early morning hours, neighbours called police after seeing a man being dragged by his ankles and then being “stomped on” by two or three other men. Police found Smythe behind the complex, still alive, but badly beaten. He died three days later from head injuries. In January 2012, Pastuck was sentenced to seven years in a federal prison while Crowther received a six-year term. However, their sentences were both reduced by 27 months due to time already served behind bars. Both men are still in custody.

Tahsis to lose lone officer www.CampbellRivermirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com

The Village of Tahsis is expected to lose its only resident police officer in June due to safety reasons. “It’s a real concern,” said Mayor Jude Schooner. “I’ve told the minister and the RCMP that we are going down fighting.” According to the mayor, it’s an ongoing struggle to keep a permanent officer. Every two years, when the officer’s placement term is ending, the village lobbies the Attorney General and the Nootka Sound RCMP to send another officer. Const. Tim Hawkes was the last officer dispatched to the small West Coast community, but when his term is up in June, he will be reassigned to the main detachment in Gold River. And the main reason, according to Schooner, is the Canada Labour Code which requires two officers to respond to an incident, largely for their own safety. However, she believes there’s another reason. “This is probably all about money.” The mayor understands the need to protect officers, but her bigger concern is protection for the entire community. It’s also a troubling matter for other residents. “I wouldn’t have moved to Tahsis if I had realized there would be no police in town,” wrote Karli Yanchus in a letter to Minister of Justice Suzanne Anton. “This is a huge blow…we are still B.C. residents deserving of service, even though we are small and isolated.” When Const. Hawkes leaves, there will be six officers assigned to the Gold River detachment, which is more than 60 kilometres away from Tahsis, separated by a mountainous logging road. For most of the year, about 250 people live in Tahsis full-time, but that number can balloon to

Brutal attack Gerome, the only llama in Tahsis, was hanging onto life Monday after a dog attack. However, according to the BC SPCA, it is believed the animal was euthanized due to serious injuries to its lower lip and left eye. Nootka Sound RCMP are investigating along with the SPCA.
almost 1,000 during the summer tourist/fishing season. There’s typically an increased police presence during the summer, particularly on the water, but the mayor wonders what will happen when the fishing season ends and there’s no local officer left? Const. Hawkes and his wife, a teacher, are valued members of the community. His presence acts as a deterrent and he’s a role model for youth. “Having an officer… live here in Tahsis has many benefits; the main one being it prevents crime,” wrote Yanchus. “An unusual danger that our town sometimes faces is wildlife that acts aggressive. Do you think the cougar ripping apart a dog pen will wait around for an hour for the officer to drive up from Gold River and deal with it?”

Nootka Sound RCMP were not available for comment before press deadline, but the mayor said there will be an upcoming community meeting with RCMP to discuss policing in Tahsis. Schooner said the Mounties are looking at a “different operational plan,” but so far it appears certain Tahsis will no longer have a permanent police officer. “(It’s) a great policy to keep our law enforcement officers safer, but that leaves our entire village of civilians with no back-up instead, which is crazy,” wrote Yanchus. paulr@campbellrivermirror.com

Council says good bye to inspector with ‘great sense of humour’ KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Campbell River council bid farewell to RCMP Inspector Lyle Gelinas on Tuesday night. Gelinas, who presents quarterly crime statistics to council, delivered his last report at this week’s council meeting. Gelinas has been promoted to the position of superintendent with the RCMP’s Western Alberta District in Grand Prairie. Councillors took turns congratulating Gelinas and wishing him well. “Wanted to recognize the legacy and job you’ve done, Inspector,” Coun. Andy Adams said. “I want to wish you all the success in your new position and congratulations on the promotion.” Coun. Larry Samson also thanked Gelinas for all of his “hard work” while Coun. Mary Storry said that council will miss him. But arguably the best moment of the night was when City Clerk Pete Wipper spoke up to say that staff at city hall had sent a hat around to pitch in for a going away gift. “We wanted to get you something, but to be honest, we didn’t get much of a response,” said Wipper, tongue in cheek. “So we couldn’t get you what we wanted to. But you know, certainly the staff of the city of Campbell River pulled out all the stops and we got you this beautiful keepsake trophy.” Wipper then proceeded
to whip out a small, golden trophy bearing part of Gelinas’ name. “We didn’t have a lot of room so we had to abbreviate your name,” Wipper apologized. “It just says, L Gel, Top Cop of 2014.” Laughing, Gelinas accepted the trophy from Wipper. “I wonder if I could cuff him right now,” Gelinas joked as he shook hands with Wipper, who said he would miss Gelinas’ wit. “Lyle has been a fantastic person to work with – great sense of humour

– and we will really miss him a lot,” Wipper said. Gelinas joined the Campbell River police
detachment in March, 2008 as officer-in-charge and led many successful crime reduction initia-
tives during his tenure in Campbell River, according to City Manager Laidlaw. Samson said Gelinas’ ‘boots on the ground’ approach has resulted in a steady decline in the city’s crime rate since the Inspector first came to Campbell River. As Campbell River RCMP detachment commander, Inspector Gelinas is both Campbell River’s City Police Chief and head of policing in rural areas from Oyster River to Roberts Lake, as well as Strathcona Park, Sonora and Stuart
Islands and the areas on the mainland around Bute Inlet. “The past six years in Campbell River have provided me with a wealth of experiences and opportunities especially in the area of crime reduction,” Gelinas said in a release. “Our detachment and community have excelled in this area and we have the results to support this. “The community of Campbell River is one of the best places to live and work, and I never have any problems filling the regular member posi-

Our View
Harcourt sets off round of NDP navel gazing Mike Harcourt was probably too nice a guy to become premier of B.C., especially as the first leader of the NDP to win power after the fondly-remembered (by NDPers, at least) Dave Barrett government of 1972-1975. The Barrett government was the first NDP government ever to take power in B.C., after being in opposition as the CCF and NDP for We say: Party almost 40 years. has a history of Harcourt led the party back to power after 16 years in the wilderness. He had succumbing to earlier served as mayor of Vancouver. infighting He styled himself “Moderate Mike,” a fairly accurate label, as he tended to try and make as many people happy as possible, and not bash business quite as much as some of his colleagues
were prone to do. However, he fell victim to the endless plotting that seems to be an integral part of the NDP’s DNA. Barrett had taken over after Tom Berger failed to win power in 1969, in an election the NDP were sure they could win. Barrett was then knifed by labour allies in his last year in power. Harcourt was under pressure over the Nanaimo Commonwealth Holding Society, an NDP-controlled organization involved in many questionable financial moves. He had nothing to do with it, but the fact that it came out on his watch caused some of his cabinet, notably Moe Sihota, Joan Smallwood and Glen Clark, to go after him. Despite the shoddy way he was treated, he remained
a member of the NDP and campaigned frequently for the party. In January, he decided not to renew his membership, a fact made known earlier this week. It received a lot of media attention, not surprisingly, given the fact that he endorsed Adrian Dix’s campaign less than a year ago. Harcourt said the Kinder Morgan flip-flop, attack on Carole James’ leadership (do we detect a pattern here?) and NDP fight against the carbon tax in 2009 caused him to not bother paying his dues this year. Those are reasonable doubts, and his action will cause many within the NDP to ponder just where their party is headed, as it undergoes its second leadership campaign in three years. – Black Press
Letters
Credit where credit is due There have been a number of articles recently both in local newspapers and the Vancouver Sun about the discovery and subsequent research being conducted on the ancient clam gardens found in the North Vancouver Island area. Obviously, some local First Nations were aware of their early involvement in mariculture, but this was not widely known. Unfortunately, these articles have made no mention of Judith Williams’ work in unearthing the mystery of these gardens which are only visible at low tide. With the advice and help of local people, she and her husband made many trips by boat to observe these carefully-built terraces that vastly increased the area where clams could be “gardened.” When I spoke to Judith Williams, she said that Elizabeth Harry (Keekus), a Klahoose Elder, told her about the clam gardens. Billy Proctor of Gilford Island also gave her invaluable advice about clam gardens in the Broughton area. What better person to do so as he built one himself over a period of 40 years! Anyone interested in this fascinating topic should read Judith Williams’ book, Clam Gardens – Aboriginal Mariculture on Canada’s West Coast. It was published in 2006 by New Star Books in Vancouver. As well as being carefully researched, the book is full of interesting photos – both historical and present day photos of the areas she visited. The author has spoken about her book and the research leading up to it on several occasions, including at the Words on the Water Writer’s Festival in Campbell River, some years ago. No sign of tumbleweeds or ghosts around here

Out On A Limb @AlstrT
editor@campbellrivermirror.com
Ghost towns are the staple of the west. From the 19th Century to the later half of the 20th and even the 21st centuries, the remains of once thriving communities stand as testaments to failure. They’re usually associated with resource industries. Gold mines played out. Silver stakes collapsed. Lead and zinc operations closed doors. Raised in the resource extraction industry, I’m no stranger to towns suddenly abandoned after they started losing too much money. Unlike gold rush towns of the old west which crumbled into rotting timbers and dusty roadways, 20th Century mining towns were dismantled and the parts were sold off or they were remarketed by an optimistic few as inexpensive housing to retire in or build your own independent future.
I lived in once-thriving mining towns – Tasu on Haida Gwaii and Faro, Yukon. Tasu was dismantled and the housing stock was shipped elsewhere after the mine closed. Faro remains vastly underpopulated for the amount of housing in that once-wealthy lead-zinc mining town. It is now trying to market itself as a doorstep on the wilderness. Much like Tumbler Ridge, B.C. after its first wave of closures and even Gold River here on the Island, Faro attempts to retain and redefine a community after its only employer left. One might argue that they’re not ghost towns but –if you’ll allow a pun – they’re ghosts of their former selves. Ba-dum. Other, more typical, ghost towns exist, fallen away over the years: Ocean Falls and Kitsault, for example.
So, why hasn’t Campbell River joined the legion of ghosts in British Columbia and the North? We lost our major employer, the Elk Falls Pulp Mill. And yet, the population of the city has actually grown since the mill closure. Other towns of a similar nature – pulp mill towns Port Alberni, Powell River and Duncan/North Cowichan – are either hanging on or have lost population, even though they have kept their mills operating. According to BC Stats, Campbell River has grown from 31,485 people in 2011 to 31,601 people in 2013, continuing the trend from the years since the mill shut down. Port Alberni, meanwhile, has decreased from 17,782 to 16,769 between 2011 and 2013. Duncan/North Cowichan has decreased slightly, from
4,945/29,298 in 2011 to 4,592/29,277 in 2013. But Powell River, surprisingly, has increased from 13,202 in 2011 to 13,439 in 2013. I find this interesting. Despite an economic body blow, Campbell River continues to grow ever so slightly. We know the economy was and still is more varied than other similar towns – mining, ironically, continues as do logging and aquaculture operations. Still, you’d think losing the once largest pulp mill in Canada would kill the community. But no, people know what a jewel this is and how pleasant it is to live here. Many commute to the oil patch, of course, but it’s a telling fact that they retain their homes here. We’re also beginning a period of construction boom. No ghosts here.

Young break-in suspects caught Three teens suspected of committing a rash of break-ins in the York Road area were recently arrested on the north end of the city. On March 28, at about 2 a.m., Campbell River RCMP received a report of suspicious activity and possibly a theft in the 4200 block of Discovery Drive in the PainterBarclay area. When officers arrived, they discovered a break-in and called in the police dog which tracked down three male suspects (ages 16-17). Police also recovered stolen property and believe the trio was behind a series of B&Es to outbuildings that occurred in the York Road area, south of the city, over the last two months. Police say one of the suspects, who cannot be named under the

New hospital builder selected PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Negotiations are underway to finalize a deal with an international consortium selected to build two new hospitals in Campbell River and the Comox Valley. Tandem Health Partners, a consortium of nine companies (see list below), has been selected by Island Health as the proponents to design, build, finance and maintain the two new hospitals. The $600-million project is slated to begin this July and will include a 95-bed, $266-million facility to be built next to the current Campbell River hospital site and a 153-bed hospital in Courtenay. Construction will begin as soon as the contract is signed. The challenge now is to negotiate a “fixed-price, performance-based agreement” with Tandem. Heading up the consortium is the Canadian arm of Balfour Beatty Capital which has offices in London, Sidney, Philadelphia and Toronto. According
to its international website and healthcare sector: “Balfour Beatty invests in, designs, builds and maintains a broad portfolio of hospital and healthcare projects. These range from small, specialist facilities to large, complex, multi-disciplinary hospitals for healthcare authorities.” The North Island Hospitals Project will be built as a public-private partnership (P3). Examples of previous P3 health care projects in B.C. include the Royal Jubilee Hospital Patient Care Centre in Victoria, the Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre, and the Fort St. John Hospital. R e c e nt l y, B a l f ou r Beatty won a P3 contract to build an $85.5 million acute mental health and community hospital in Scotland. In a February press release Balfour Beatty CEO Andrew McNaughton provided a hint of the North Island Hospitals Project. “In recent years we have become a leader in the healthcare (P3) market in the United Kingdom coupled with
substantial experience in the construction of major hospital facilities in the U.S.,” he said. “We have transferred these skills to leverage opportunities in adjacent markets such as Canada.” The naming of Tandem follows an extensive evaluation of proposals submitted by three consortiums. Island Health is also promising to release details of the contract once it is finalized. As well, John Singleton, the fairness advisor for the competitive selection process, has had full access to every aspect of the evaluation and will prepare an independent opinion regarding fairness of the process. His report will be made public at www.partnershipsbc.ca Fast facts: n Work is expected to begin this summer on the two hospitals with completion slated for 2017. n The Campbell River work will create approximately 900 direct jobs and more than 650 indirect jobs in industries supplying goods and ser-
vices used in construction. n The Comox Valley work will create approximately 1,000 direct jobs and more than 750 indirect jobs. n All health-care services will continue to be funded by the province and delivered by Island Health. n The $600 million cost of the project will be shared by the province and the Comox Strathcona Regional Hospital District. Take a Tidemark Theatre seat KRISTEN DOUGLAS
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The seats at the Tidemark Theatre are going up for sale. Council agreed last week to the Tidemark Theatre Society’s request to sell the old chairs using the theatre’s new ticketing system. At last week’s Tuesday council meeting, Coun. Andy Adams moved the
motion which also stipulated that any proceeds from the sale should go towards Tidemark Theatre capital projects, namely renovating the concession. Kim Emsle y-L ei k, managing director of the Tidemark Theatre Society, told council that the seats are the property of the city and it was up to council what became of the chairs.
“The disposal or sale of the seats is currently city of Campbell River responsibility,” EmsleyLeik said. “In an effort to facilitate this process and to continue to partner with the city of Campbell River on this project, I would like to recommend that council consider using the new theatre manager ticketing system we have recently installed in the theatre to sell the
seats.” The seats will be removed from the theatre starting July 1 as renovations get underway. All of the theatre chairs will be reaplced and the house will be re-painted and re-carpeted. It’s part of the theatre’s T25 Campaign which also includes upgrades to the lighting and online ticketing system, and the purchase of a new projection system.

Clicking or pain when opening or closing the mouth can be a sign of disc derangement in the TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint), better known as the jaw. The disc in the jaw can be pulled forward for several reasons like: trauma, Jason Kowalchuck, Physiotherapist abnormal bite, tight muscles, or altered neck posture. Once pulled forward, it starts to click when the jaw bone slips off the disc, and if not treated, puts the disc at risk of further damage. Physiotherapists at CBI-Rehabilitation In Motion have specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of TMJ problems, and most can be resolved quickly!

» Puppy Tips
First of all, chewing is a very normal and natural thing for any puppy or dog to do. Unfortunately they often chew the wrong thing like the couch or shoes because the owner hasn’t trained their puppy what he can chew and aren’t supervising the puppy properly. Use a kennel or a gated off area to restrict the puppy roaming around and finding something to chew on when you can’t be watching him. Invest in at least 2 (or more) KONG Cathy Merrithew toys, they’re hollow so they can be stuffed with the puppy’s meals or treats, give one to your puppy when you go out, he’ll work at getting the food out of it and tire himself out….I also love the Buster Cube - a treat dispensing toy that will entertain your puppy for hours and hours. If you find him chewing the wrong thing, redirect to what you want him to chew, and make sure not to leave anything where he can reach it…. I’d also suggest upping the exercise your puppy is getting, a “Tired Puppy is a Good Puppy!” Most puppies or adult dogs don’t get enough physical and/or mental exercise, and that’s why they find things to keep themselves busy. If they can’t chew, they might decide to bark or dig instead…..Try hiding treats out in the yard and sending him to go find them, anything to let him use his nose for hunting will certainly wear him out plus he’ll have fun doing it! A walk where he can sniff and investigate will tire him out more than chasing a ball or Frisbee…

Lower back pain can be caused by a number of factors from injuries to the effects of aging. The spinal cord is protected by vertebrae, which are made of bone. Between each vertebra are soft discs with a ligamentous outer layer. These discs function as shock absorbers to protect the vertebra and the spinal cord. Experts’ Advice
The garden shops and grocery stores are full of gorgeous lilies we love for adding color and decor to our homes, but they may also attract our curious four legged friends, and encourage them to take a closer look. Is this beautiful flower “safe” for our family cat to accidentally demolish? The answer is no. Dr. Peter Woodward The Easter lily, tiger lily, stargazer lily, Japanese show lily, Asian lily, some species of day lily, and certain other members of the Liliaceae family can be fatal if ingested by a cat. All parts of these plants are considered toxic to cats and ingestion of even a tiny amount can cause severe poisoning. Within only a few hours of ingestion, the cat may vomit, become lethargic, or develop a lack of appetite. These signs continue and worsen as kidney damage progresses. Without prompt and proper treatment, the cat will develop kidney failure in approximately 36 to 72 hours. If you suspect your cat has potentially eaten any part of your lilies, please seek your Family Veterinarian immediately. Don’t hesitate to call even if symptoms have not developed. If you are unsure about your household plants, curious which plants you can keep and which are toxic, please call your Veterinarian; don’t trust Dr. Google.

There is an alternative to donating “after tax” dollars to your favorite charity. Cashing out non-registered investments to give money to a charity can trigger a capital gain if the investments have appreciated in value. With Peter Garat capital gains, one half of gains are Certified Financial Planner normally taxable when the assets are redeemed. However, since 2006, any capital gain triggered by making a donation of publicly traded securities (including those held within mutual funds) to a registered charity is eliminated under tax law. So, if you have a capital gain on some of your investments in your non-registered investment account you can donate the investments directly to the charity instead (an ‘in-kind’ transfer). Any capital gains on the investments donated directly to registered charities would be free from taxes on the gains of the investment.

A permanent life insurance policy payable to your estate can satisfy the desire to leave a legacy to a favorite charity, and give your estate a significant Darlene Garat tax break on your final return. Financial Advisor The tax break allows for more of your estate to remain intact, leaving more behind for your family financially. This is particularly helpful if you own an business and/or real estate (ie rentals or recreational). An additional life insurance policy, naming your family as beneficiaries, can be set up to eliminate debt and replace income as needed. Each situation is different, and a carefully designed legacy plan can help you feel confident that you have taken care of all that is important to you.

Island Race series comes to Merville
And they’re off! The Merville 15K kicked off Sunday under perfect conditions.
Carihi’s excellent adventure Colin Fairweather Carihi Senior BoyS SoCCer
The Carihi senior boys soccer team has made history over the last three years winning the Island championships and attaining back-to-back provincial berths. All this hard work over the previous four years took us across the Atlantic to England, the birthplace of soccer. Years of fundraising and planning was done to take the 13 seniors over to Manchester, England, where we stayed with billets before travelling all over the UK to places such as Liverpool, York, Harrogate, Haworth, London, Hull and Birmingham. After a full day of travelling, we found ourselves in Manchester, jet-legged and exhausted, just in time for a well-deserved sleep before our 16-day long trip commenced. Thursday, March 13, we made our way to Xavarian College with our billets before embarking on our first day. The first visit was to the home of Manchester City FC, Etihad Stadium. We toured around the ground, seeing first hand all the amazing features of the venue, and taking in the vast size of the stadium. After a quick lunch we travelled downtown and found ourselves inside the national football museum, which
Carihi Tyees and coaches pose in front of Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City Football Club.
offered tons of historical football displays and information on the culture that consumes much of the world. The next day we met up at the school, football gear in hand ready to play our first game on English soil. We travelled back to the Etihad stadium, but this
time we were set to play against St. Peter’s at Manchester City academy’s stadium. It was a humbling experience warming-up in the shadow of the massive Etihad stadium. Although there were no fans to cheer on Carihi during this Cont. page 24
The seventh race in the Frontrunners Island Race Series – Merville 15K – took place Sunday under perfect conditions. The race was hosted by the River Runners and had 310 finishers. Series leaders Derek Vinge and Claire Morgan repeated their wins from the Comox Valley RV Half Marathon two weeks ago. Vinge, from the Comox Valley Road Runners, won in 50:09. Nick Walker (Frontrunners Athletic Club) came second in 50:39 and third was Shane Ruljancich (Prairie Inn Harriers) in 52:02. Hugh Trenchard was the top Master finishing in 53:37. Morgan (Prairie Inn Harriers) was the clear victor in the women’s race – finishing in 56:43. Second was Jill Ramstead (CeeVacs Running Club) in 59:57 and third was Cheryl Davies (Bastion Running Club) in 1:02:09. Davies was the top female Master. “Numbers were down a little from last year but the runners enjoyed fabulous racing conditions,” said Race Director, Linda Nagle “The duel between Derek Vinge and Nick Walker was won by Vinge beating Walker by 30 seconds and improving on Walker’s 2013 time by three seconds.” There was one new course record – Roslyn Smith in the W65-69. international friendly, we were ecstatic to play in such a large stadium in the presence of the EPL super-team. A 2-1 comeback led by Zach Tillapaugh and Kevin Shelswell gave us Canadians a winning record to start the tour. The next morning we loaded into the vehicles and drove over the Pennines to Hull City to watch our very first English Premier League game, where Manchester City FC would be playing against the Hull City
Tigers. It was quite an experience as we took in 25,000 supporters singing songs and cheering for their team while enjoying a famous English pie. MCFC came out on top with a 2-0 victory and we couldn’t have been happier with it. The next day the bags were packed for a threenight stay at the portcity of Liverpool, Home of the famous Beatles. After a quick fish and chips we drove to De La Salle Secondary School for our second game. The field was bumpy and the winds were high as we got our first taste of a skilled English team. Carihi did well, keeping the play very even but unfortunately we

fell short 4-2. A similar Tuesday was planned. Across the park from Everton FC, we arrived at the world famous Liverpool FC’s ground. Inspired by the famous ground we headed to Cardinal Heenan Sports College, Stephen Gerrard’s alma mater, who is currently the captain of Team England. Carihi played well with no subs, But we couldn’t hold off the English powerhouse, losing 6-1. We finished off the day by driving to Wigan. There we watched Wigan play Yeovil in the Championship division of England’s professional
league. The match consisted of six goals, five of which were scored in the last ten minutes to give three different leads. Wigan player Jean Beausejour came over to celebrate his goal with us at the side line, resulting in our photo on the Wigan Athletics website. Our last day in Liverpool started with a short visit to Penny Lane, where Sir Paul McCartney grew up, then a quick drive to our third game in Liverpool against St. Francis Xavier. Two late goals for SFX proved to be enough in a 2-1 loss for the Tyees. Arriving back in Manchester, the team took
their billets out for a buffet dinner, in thanks for their welcoming hospitality. The stay in Manchester was short lived. The bags were packed once again as we travelled to the old Roman City of York for the night. There, we walked along the cobblestone roads of the Shambles and the great stone wall that surrounded the inner city. The next morning we travelled to Harrogate, a nice, posh community where we played our final game for Carihi against Rossetts School. Evan Farmer put the Tyees ahead early with
a beautiful strike leaving Rossetts’ keeper fishing out the ball from the back of the goal. Rossetts replied with three unanswered goals giving them a victory as the final whistle sounded. Emotions ran high despite the friendly game. Captains Zach Tillapaugh and Collin Massie exchanged Carihi’s plaque to Rossetts as the Tyees all got together for one last cheer. It was a very memorable moment for all thirteen of us, who have accomplished so much over our last four years, and a great place to end our Carihi legacy.
MANAGING YOUR MONEY Key pensions decisions that shape your retirement Treena Parker B.Ed.

Achieving the retirement lifestyle you want depends on many things – your health, your plans for travelling, volunteering or even starting a new career – but among the most important is having the financial wherewithal to ensure your retirement lifestyle goals become reality. If you are a member of a pension plan, you have some important decisions to make which will have a strong impact on the amount and length of your pension. • Decide when your pension payments will begin. If you have a defined benefit pension plan it may reduce the annual benefit if you retire before reaching a certain age or completing a minimum service requirement. However, your plan may have a to offset an early retirement pension reduction that is paid from the date of early retirement up to age 65, then ceases. • Decide whether or not your pension benefit transfers to your spouse when you die. You can usually: - Elect to receive a life-
only pension that ends when you die. It will deliver a higher monthly benefit to you than a joint and last survivorship pension but will not provide a continuing benefit for your spouse after you die. - Select the joint and last survivorship option. While your monthly benefit will be lower, the “joint and last survivor” option is usually better unless your spouse has his or her own pension, Registered Retirement Savings Plan, and/or nonregistered assets or adequate insurance coverage.

die prematurely, the benefit will be paid for the minimum period you selected. • Does your plan have a CPP (Canada Pension Plan) or OAS (Old Age Security) integration option? If so, you can choose to receive an advance on your pension in the form of larger monthly payments until age 65, when CPP and OAS benefits normally begin. Do you have the option to transfer the commuted value of your pension to a lockedin account? Instead of receiving a monthly lifetime pension, you transfer the commuted value of your pension to an account you control.

• Decide how much the survivor benefit will be. Not all plans allow you to do this – check the details of your plan. In most jurisdictions, the ‘standard’ survivor benefit is 60% of the pension that was being paid to you prior to death. The higher the survivor benefit percentage, the lower the monthly benefit paid to you. • Decide to receive your pension benefit for a guaranteed minimum number of payments. Some plans allow you to choose to receive monthly pension payments over a minimum term of 5, 10 or 15 years – meaning that even if you
You have key pension decisions to make that will have a profound effect on your retirement. What’s right for you? Ask your professional advisor. Teenagers keep Mount Cain going Tara WarkenTin Carihi Mirror
Each winter, Mt. Cain employs teenagers from across the North Island. Mt. Cain is a small, community-run ski hill that is known for its deep, untracked powder skiing. It is two hours north of Campbell River – along the highway towards Woss then up a bumpy longing road. The ski
hill has two T-bars and a bunny hill tow-rope. It is only open on weekends, allowing the snow to build up all week. The majority of the paid positions on the hill (Mt. Cain has a strong volunteer base) are filled by youth. They work in the rental shop, the ticket office, the snow school and as “liftees” and ticket checkers. Working at Mt. Cain “is a unique opportu-
nity,” according to Ken Griffith, the liftee superviser. “[Youth] learn about the machinery of the lifts and have to interact with people.” The minimum age for being a liftee is 14, so it is often a teenager’s first job. They get a free season’s pass, gear rentals and accommodation (at a members fee of $25) so it makes skiing and boarding affordable and easy. It gives kids a

Time off: how much is too much? Larissa MeLviLLe Carihi Mirror
Too much time off from school: how problematic can it be? Almost any student can agree that they look forward to spending time away from school to relax, have fun, and just more or less push education to a portion of the mind where they can forget it. School causes stress, this much is obvious, and time off is essential to a healthy lifestyle, but this banks on one question: How much time off is too much? For the two month period during the summer, there is almost no thought put into education and perhaps this lengthy period of time dissolves learning capabilities. There are other options though, like summer school, where the last nine months of learning isn’t lost, and they can refresh certain skills. Carihi Student Gena Bannerman says that she is uncertain about whether or not spending so much time off from

school is really such a great idea. “I feel that having two months off for summer is needed for students just to relax from the pressures and stress of school and that since summer is in between two different grades, it’s not like stu-
dents are getting cut off in the middle of a subject,” Bannerman said. Bannerman believes that it may be better to have more ‘brief ’ time periods of relaxation rather than having just one or two big ones. Cont. page 27

want to be a part of it. They want to make a change. Many teens have embodied this proactive thinking, but can’t find an affordable outlet to practice it. “It’s a match made in heaven for teenagers because they want to buy clothes, and then they feel good buying the clothes because they know that the money that they’re spending is going to something good,” says Joanna Morrison, a youth and supporter of socially conscious clothing. Many brand names offer clothing and shoes with deals that when an article is bought, the company supports an environmental or social

used to believe people who wore brand name clothing that supported socially-conscious ideas only wore them because it’s trendy. I was put off by this. But after sitting down with some youth to speak on the matter, I have a new perspective. Our society is awash with proactive young role models such as Craig and Marc Kielburger for Free the Children or Lena Dunham for her raw feminist ideals. When youth see that social consciousness is part of popular culture, they

“It would be a more beneficial learning outcome for students,” she said. Time off in the summer has been around for many years, because back when most families were farmers, they needed their children at home during the summer months to help harvest crops. The tradition stuck and that’s why we continue to follow it even today. Although summer is pleasant, perhaps it is time for schools to break from tradition and try something a bit more unconventional.
cause. Toms for instance is a shoe company that donates one pair of shoes to a third world country when one pair of shoes is bought. Ten Trees naturally plants 10 trees for every article of clothing. Even American Apparel brands themselves as sweatshop free. All of these companies have large teenaged followings. When I asked what made it “cool” to buy these clothes, Morrison said it’s not about being cool, it’s about the individual contribution. “Everyone wants to individually make a change, and have a feeling of success after fulfilling a really big project. So when you buy these clothes, it makes

you feel good because you personally went out to buy the clothes. Instead, if you’re in a big group working on a project, it’s not just you anymore that’s making the difference, it’s everyone. Which is good also, but it gives you a different feeling to do it alone.” Youth are already socially conscious; they already want to buy clothes, so these brands are smart to target a market ready to spend their money on what they considered a win-win situation. Maybe there are more direct ways teenagers can aid in a prosperous community, but for now they seem perfectly content doing it this way.

She takes numbers and clears bodies.
Emsley-Leik is one of a growing number of local women who have taken up the thrilling sport of roller derby. But it’s more than a sport. It has a culture all its own. It even comes with its own rough and cheeky nicknames. At the rink, Emsley-Leik becomes Foxie McMuff and her job as a blocker is to block the opposing team’s jammer from passing Emsley-Leik’s fellow blockers and scoring points. If the jammer gets around twice, she racks up one point for each skater she passes on the second lap. Emsley-Leik is one of seven from Campbell River who skate for the Rink Minx, a team based out of the Comox Valley. The other members are: Lindsey Ryzak, who’s known around the rink as Lita Riot, Peggy Benoit (Ballsy Benoit), Lisa Jackson (Whiskey Jack), Chantelle McPherson (Chantos Sanchez), Kari Barker (Swifty), and Taisa Brown (Lumber Smack). Though so many members of Rink Minx call Campbell River home, the team has had a difficult time bringing the sport to the River City.

“What’s challenging is finding the space,” Emsley-Leik says. “A lot of facility staff assume our roller skates will ruin the floor, which is not the case. So we practice in Courtenay, which is unfortunate because half the team is from Campbell River.” gear which includes a helmet, mouth and wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads, and roller skates.
Emsley-Leik said she hopes the bout, which will attract teams from all over Vancouver Island, will show the viability of having the sport in Campbell River.
While serious injuries are rare, Emsley-Leik says she does come home with some “wicked” bruises. “We call them trophy bruises,” she says smiling. “They’re these huge things sometimes. We’re actually kind of proud of them.”
“Every time we host a bout there’s an influx of skaters,” Emsley-Leik says. “They spend money on hotels, on restaurants, they go shopping, they go to bars. The more events we have, it only benefits the community in the long run. People want events to go to, they want to be entertained.” And roller derby is no doubt entertaining. It’s a full contact sport full of positional, or booty blocking, ride outs, and hip whips. For that reason, each skater must wear full

But she enjoys it all the same. “I just love to skate,” says Emsley-Leik, a former figure skater, who first got into the sport while living in her hometown of Williams Lake. “I’ve always loved to skate. I like being a part of a team atmosphere. It also promotes fitness. We’re always trying to find a way to up the bar just one more notch.” Emsley-Leik and teammate Melicious Mooose (Melissa Curtis) have even started roll-

Looking at my fishing calendar from last year, trout fishing began in mid April but the weather has warmed up in the past Activity at Echo Lake few days. The action has started earlier this year with good catch reports from both Campbell River and Courtenay. Many stocked lakes offer the angler a chance to get out and enjoy fishing from shore using power bait or trolling with wedding bands. This time of year on the fly, a black leech about a number 6 seems to catch fish in water about 20 to 30 feet deep. I had hooked three fish and kept one that measured 28 cm. Steelhead fishing on the Gold River has been fair to good and the guys getting out and hooking fish have spent many hours fishing with good success. Harry Macdonald from Campbell River, has just returned from a week of guiding and managed to hook and release a 28 cm trout number of fish. caught on the y. Those that fish the Oyster River are getting smaller fish. The Oyster will be fishable until the end of April. May 1st until September 30th fishing for lingcod will open in areas 12-1 to 12-13, 12-15 to 12-48, 13 to 19, 20-5 to 20-7, and 29-5. Daily limit is 1 and possession limit is 2 with the size limit being 65 cm. Saltwater fishing has been good in recent weeks and the Hump is still producing salmon in the mid teens and halibut continues to be a target at the moment. As a member of the Kinsmen Club of Campbell River, I am in the process of looking at a fishing derby this summer at Salmon Point. Details and dates to be determined. Quinsam River

Nola has volunteered with us since 2004 and due to her long time with us she has gotten to know many of our clients and has become in tuned with their habits and personalities. Her awareness (and quick thinking) of one clients normal manner led her to determine medical help was needed one day. She managed to get an ambulance to him since he had suffered a stroke.

GOLF Weekly Help kids learn the game of golf Adults who play golf know just how fun and frustrating the game can be. Whether you’re a veteran golfer or someone just learning the links, golf can be challenging. But as exacting as the game can be, it also can be just as rewarding, even for kids. Children who embrace the game of golf will learn a host of lessons they can apply in all facets of life. A humbling game even for professional golfers, golf can teach kids lessons in humility and the value of persistence even when things aren’t going your way. Golf is also a great way for parents to get kids off the couch and outdoors for some fun in the sun. Instead of spending summer afternoons in front of the television, kids who play golf are out patrolling pristine golf courses while getting some cardiovascular exercise along the way. Golf can also strengthen a child’s hand-eye coordination, which can help them in other activities, including many different sports. Though many people do not begin playing golf until they’ve reached adulthood, it’s never too early for boys and girls to start learning the game of golf. Parents of preschoolers can start their kids off with a toddler play set. Though it’s just a toy, a play set can help lay a solid foundation for future golfers. Kids who have
watched Mom and Dad play golf or practice their swing can develop their own swings on their play set. As kids approach school age, don’t overlook the nearby puttputt or miniature golf range as a valuable teaching tool. Miniature golf clubs are small enough for many children to use comfortably, and kids can use miniature golf courses as a place to put any lessons or advice on putting to good use. What’s more, a miniature golf course is more than just golf, with creative courses and other fun activities, so kids won’t feel overwhelmed with golf. When kids move on from preschool to elementary school, some might want to tag along with Mom or Dad to the driving range. You should try to avoid overwhelming kids with too much instruction or information. Instead, keep things as simple as possible, teaching them the basic swing and encouraging them no matter how quickly they adapt. As kids enter middle school and approach high school, those who are enjoying the game of golf can take advantage of the driving range if they haven’t already begun to. A driving range typically has markers that indicate the distance of a regular hole, regardless of which tee you will play from on an actual golf course. Kids can aim for holes at shorter distances to learn how far their drives are going. You can then adjust the lessons you teach your children based on how far youngsters can drive the ball.
As a child gets closer to high school, you might want to buy the child his or her own set of clubs. Look for inexpensive clubs (oftentimes, thrift stores or other secondhand retailers have clubs for sale) because growing children will eventually grow out of their first set of clubs.
When your child finds a set of clubs that suits him or her, teach the proper way to swing and consider signing up your son or daughter for lessons. Those first few lessons can prove invaluable, turning a pastime into a passion kids will carry with them throughout their lives.

Misty Fin’s Eatery and Lounge is helping the city realize its vision of making the downtown St. Ann’s block a pedestrianfriendly neighbourhood where people can sit and gather. The restaurant, which is across the street from Best Wok on the revamped portion of Alder Street, plans to create an outdoor patio area. Misty Fin’s applied to the city for an agreement that will allow the restaurant to operate a sidewalk cafe patio in front of its establishment. Council agreed to the terms at its last week’s Tuesday meeting. Coun. Andy Adams said he was glad to see city staff work with a business that was impacted by the city’s downtown revitalization project which involved the temporary closure of the restaurant’s main access road. “Really pleased to see staff work with the businesses, particularly this one which has been adversely affected through the construction period, but also the significant change from eight years ago where we are now animating our sidewalks,” Adams said. Monique Reid, owner/ operator of Misty Fin’s, told the Mirror last June that she could envision one day having patio tables outside her restaurant where people could gather and enjoy a nice meal.
That day now seems closer than ever with council giving Reid the go-ahead and the downtown project wrapping up.
Alder Street has been re-opened to traffic for a few months now and the wider sidewalk will accommodate the outdoor tables.
Newly planted maple trees will provide shade for diners. And with the narrower road, the city is aiming to slow down traffic and

create a more pedestrianfriendly atmosphere with park-like green space planned for around the new Seymour Pacific headquarters building.
The $4.04 million downtown project is expected to wrap up within the next couple of weeks. Construction of Seymour Pacific’s new
headquarters building is expected to be complete later this year. A community celebration is in the works for once both projects are finished.
