That word came about three weeks ago when the museum society found out they would receive $59,000 from the Regional District of the Kootenay Boundary from the federal gas tax funding. “We received the funding for the solar system and it’s on order,” said Cliff Schuh, treasurer and building supervisor for the Boundary Museum. “It’ll be arriving on the 25th. The first fire was at the Grand Forks Hotel, destroying the building and causing $1 million in damage. The second fire was set on a motorcycle which was under a staircase at the Winnipeg Hotel. The fire at City Hall, which occurred on Sept. 19, 2013, caused extensive damage and was classed by police as arson. On the morning of the fire, Grand Forks RCMP apprehended Conn near the scene of the fire, referring to him in a press release as a “person of interest.”

1944 The total amount of money that was required to be raised in the Sixth Victory Loan in the West Kootenay district was $950,000 with Grand Forks’ share being $68,000. 1949 Nine native graves in a row were discovered by Gordon Ball when his bulldozer cleared a fresh gravel patch on the mountain flank near the golf course. 1954 Residents of Grand Forks and Greenwood learned that low-power radio transmitters were installed with operation to begin within a week. 1959 Grand Forks Board of Trade wrote to city council asking for help in the opening of a full-time tourist bureau in the museum for the summer. 1964 All that remained of the old Grand Forks Community Hospital was a pile of ashes and bits of broken concrete. Firemen set fire to the debris in the basement after Wilbur Bannert completed the demolition work, taking six weeks. 1969 Vandals ransacked the premises of the Trap Shooting Club on the old golf course. Extensive damage was done to the building and its contents. 1974 City council members had difficulty agreeing on a resolution’s wording asking rural taxpayers if they wish to share

Both sides in the dispute are assuring the public that ambulance services will continue to run across the province under essential services legislation.

Family puts out call to help daughter CRAIG LINDSAY

It’s been awhile since the band has been together, but Dr. Fun and the Nightcrawlers are looking at getting back together for a special fundraiser. Gary Gilbert (aka Dr. Fun) spends less time playing music these days and more time supporting his stepdaughter Rose, who has recently been diagnosed with Lyme disease. Gilbert and wife Tani Schwartz lived in Grand Forks for many, many years before moving to Sechelt six years ago. Gilbert’s Dr. Fun and the Nightcrawlers were very well known around the Kootenay-Boundary. “Gary was there (in Grand Forks) for 30 years; I was there for 10,” said Tani. The Schwartzes moved to Grand Forks when Rose was 11 and Tani met Gilbert shortly after. Growing up, Rose went to Perley Elementary and then graduated from Grand Forks Secondary. She started to get sick when she was 14, starting with heartburn and acid reflux. Rose eventually had trouble keeping food down and was labeled as anorexic, said Tani. “During this time she was, of course, losing weight and we took her to various doctors and specialist and she had numerous medical tests, which showed nothing was

physically wrong with her.” Rose did test positive for gastroparesis, which is a condition where the muscles in the stomach don’t function normally, preventing a person from emptying the stomach properly (Mayoclinic.

tell me—I found out that Lyme disease can cause a lot things including gastroparesis.” Rose was tested for Lyme disease in Canada five years ago using what is called the ELIZA test but the results were negative. Following the lead of a family friend, Tani and Gary had Rose tested by a private lab in California at their own expense. “It’s the western blot test,” she said. “It’s the one they do in Canada if you get a positive result with the ELIZA test, which is rare. So I just skipped that step. I went directly to that lab.” Rose’s result was 100 per cent positive for Lyme disease, Tani said. To help with the cost of treatment for Rose, Tani started an online fundraiser page at fundrazr. com/campaigns/8ifec. They have set a goal of $20,000 and are 80 per cent of their way there. Gilbert is also hoping to get Dr. Fun and the Nightcrawlers back together soon for a benefit concert in Grand Forks. “My husband’s trying to get all the guys together,” Tani said. “We just wanted to update everyone in Grand Forks that we now know what caused the gastroparesis. Now we can treat it; we’re just looking into what our treatment options are. We know none of it will be covered by B.C. Medical. We may have to travel (for treatment).”

The B.C. government is providing $70,444 to local municipalities in recognition of their commitment to support a healthier, more sustainable community, announced BoundarySimilkameen MLA Linda Larson last week. “The province is committed to carbon neutrality and the return of this tax encourages communities to think about the impact on the environment of all their projects and local initiatives and to plan their communities accordingly using a ‘green’ lens,” said Larson. “We are encouraging communities to think of the next generation who will also want clean green spaces to live and work in.” The B.C. government awarded grants to the following Boundary-Similkameen municipalities:

tion Charter goals. The Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program is a conditional grant program that provides funding to Climate Action Charter signatories. Communities that signed the Climate Action Charter and report publicly on their progress toward meeting their climate action goals are eligible to receive a grant equivalent to 100 per cent of the carbon tax they pay directly. A total of $6.8 million province wide will be paid out in the fiscal year 2013/14. Since 2008, the B.C. government has provided $19 million through the Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program. Climate Action Charter communities monitor and chart their progress year over year. They also support public transparency. Currently, 96 per cent of communities in B.C. have signed the Climate Action Charter.

Theft of tools

On April 5 at 3:49 p.m., RCMP received a complaint regarding theft of tools from a shed on Kettle River Drive some time over the last week. “The complainant stated a chainsaw, which was a Poulin, and tools inside a toolbox were taken,” said Staff Sgt. Harrison. “Unfortunately no serial numbers or identifying features were there to help identify the items if they’re recovered.” The cost of the items stolen is around $500. There are no current suspects or witnesses at this time. Anyone with any information is urged to call Grand Forks RCMP at 250-442-8288.

Theft of lottery tickets

Also on April 5, RCMP received a complaint of a theft of lottery tickets from SuperSave Gas in Grand Forks. “Apparently a male had entered into the store behind the front counter after the clerk went outside to help a customer,” said Harrison. “He stole about $200 worth of lottery and scratch type tickets. Obviously, he was caught on video and subsequently arrested.” The suspect is a 20-yearold male from Vancouver and has been charged with theft under $5,000. He was released on a promise to appear in court.

Stolen purse

RCMP received a complaint of a stolen purse from Jogas Espresso Cafe on April 6 at 10:40 a.m. “We don’t have a description of the purse,” said Harrison. “If anyone knows the whereabouts of the purse please contact the police department and we’ll get it back to the rightful owner.”

Testing questionable

With spring finally here and warmer weather all around, more people are heading outdoors for walking and hiking and biking. Unfortunately, spring weather also means tick season. Ticks can carry Lyme disease and other diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, which is rare. Fortunately, only one per cent of ticks tested by the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) carry Lyme disease and most of those are in the Lower Mainland. Most tick species in the interior are wood ticks, which do not carry the Lyme disease bacteria. The infected bite features a skin rash that looks like a ‘bull’s eye’ and symptoms include fever, headache and muscle and joint pain. “Covering up before you head outdoors and checking for ticks when returning from a walk, hike or bike ride are simple things that go a long way to prevent tick bites,” says Dr. Karin Goodison, a public health physician with Interior Health. “Most tick bites do not cause illnesses; however, any bite from a tick or other insects should be cleaned with soap and water because infection can occur whenever there is a break in the skin.” A recent parliamentary bill, C-442, introduced by Green Party leader Elizabeth May has brought Lyme disease into the forefront of the news again. Lyme disease is often seen as being misdiagnosed and mistreated. Many patients seek testing and treatment in the United States, where there tends to be more private clinics which may not have the same level of government scrutiny than in B.C. We certainly can’t blame people for wanting to exhaust all possibilities when it comes to our health and our family’s health. The Green Party may be a fringe party in the grand scheme of Canadian politics, but the bill brought forward from May is right on the money. The country, and certainly B.C., needs to bring together those who work in the health industry to better improve the Lyme disease policy and guidelines for testing and treatment. For people like the Gilbert-Schwartzes, having to travel to the U.S. and paying exorbitant costs to receive treatment is unacceptable.

‘Safety’ is the excuse for shift in attitudes Second Opinion JIM HOLTZ An ad appeared on television Sunday announcing the latest in automotive safety technology: on certain Infinity models, a computer on the car can detect a vehicle slowing down two cars in front of the driver and apply the brakes automatically. Incredible. Other news items that week discussed the latest in driverless taxicabs and automated superhighways. It would appear that it won’t be long before we will all be merely passengers on

the highways and byways of the land. There was a time when that might have sounded appealing, a futuristic vision of a time when machines did all the work and human beings could simply relax and contemplate the great mysteries of life, solving problems and evolving into the kind of cerebral creatures that we were destined to be. Today it is all beginning to sound a little less appealing. In addition to gradually giving over control of our automobiles to electronic aids, we are entering an era when our shopping habits, Internet searches, email contacts, and credit card purchases are all catalogued and analysed by supercomputers, where our movements on city streets

are monitored and scanned, where every house is Google Earthed by satellite cameras with a clarity and precision that can reveal the number of burners on the backyard barbeque. One has to wonder if society is giving up on the idea that there is value in being self-reliant, independent and autonomous. Removing the responsibility for driving one’s own car is just a small part of that picture. The excuse for most of this shift in attitudes is “safety.” A variety of social influences has convinced us that we must be kept safe from terrorists, from criminals, and from ourselves. If it wasn’t for surveillance, supervision, and government oversight, we would be ter-

And maybe I am too thick-headed to realize that without access to all Internet search records the government watchdogs might not catch the terrorist who bought his black hoodie online at the GAP. I just know that I like driving my own car. Sometimes, on lonely Interior highways, I even drive over the speed limit. I would hate to give that up.

Illness finally diagnosed but treatment will be costly Letter to the Editor: We have finally cracked the code regarding our daughter Rose’s failing health. We recently revisited our suspicions that Rose may have contracted the disease when we still lived in the Kootenays. This time we spent hundreds of dollars for a blood test at a state-of-the-art lab in the U.S. and it came back 100 per cent positive. Lyme disease affects everyone differently and is commonly misdiagnosed, often for MS, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue or mental illness. It’s a debilitating, sometimes fatal disease. For Rose it has mainly attacked her digestive system and she has already sustained some serious damage. She no longer has a stomach or teeth because of the gastroparesis and is now suffering from extreme malabsorption. She needs iron infusions and may need blood transfusions if her hemoglobin level keeps going down. She’s lost a substantial amount of weight recently that she hasn’t been able to gain back. We’ve learned that Canada knows very little about Lyme

disease and many doctors won’t even recognize it. Five years ago when Rose dug a tick head out of her leg, we thought it might have something to do with her illness, so she was tested in Canada and it came back negative. We continued to explore other possibilities, not knowing that the test here is so inadequate. I can’t explain how devastated we are all feeling, knowing that all our hard work for all of these years has been misdirected. If we would have picked up on this sooner poor Rose would not have had to endure the incredible pain and suffering she has for all this time. Her youth has been robbed from her and there is no telling at this point, after being misjudged and misdiagnosed so many times by so many people, just how the psychological and physical damage that she’s incurred to this point, will affect her for the rest of her life. There are alternative treatments that we are also researching and we are going to do our best to get treatment in Canada. Unfortunately none of these treatments are covered by B.C. medical and can take months or even years, costing upwards of $100,000. My wife Tani isn’t working right now and you may or may not be aware, but she has MS and is limited to the types of work can she do. We also live in a community that has the highest unemployment rate in the province, so with her limitations, it’s even tougher to find work. I am working, but we live paycheque to paycheque and have no assets or savings to use. All of this leads us to fundraising for the money we need to save our daughter’s life. Letter to the Editor: I’m deeply concerned about proposed changes to the ALC /ALR recently tabled in Bill 24. 1) As the Boundary is in Zone 2, our agriculture lands are at risk of being developed for uses other than agriculture and farming. Bill 24 leaves the door wide open to using that fertile land for industrial, commercial, housing, and “other considerations”. I’m incensed that this bill dismisses the value of our soilrich, sunshine-laden agricultural land and the economic possibilities it offers us as we return to our historic roots as a

food producing region. 2) The provincial government failed to consult with the public on the proposed changes to the ALC law. In contrast, the public was extensively consulted on the recent Water Sustainability Act. Why not on this bill? Minister Bill Bennett’s statement saying he takes personal responsibility for this “apparent deficiency” rings hollow and does nothing to rectify the situation. 3) As the original ALC/ ALR act is 40 years old, it certainly needs updating. But I urge the provincial government to update it by protecting

and supporting farmers and farm land. For example, allow farmers to divide large parcels into smaller plots so that older farmers can retire in comfort, while at the same time providing younger farmers and ranchers with an opportunity to buy smaller, affordable pieces of land. In this era of climate change, our ability to grow our own food is paramount—for this generation but even more so for future generations. Earth needs good lawyer Polly Higgins, a British lawyer calls herself Lawyer for the Earth. Her objective is to make ecocide a crime that can be tried at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, the Netherlands. Ecocide is defined as, “The extensive destruction, damage to or loss of ecosystem(s) of a given territory, whether by human agency or by other causes, to such an extent that peaceful enjoyment by the inhabitants of that territory has been severely diminished.” Examples of Ecocide affecting sizeable territories are: tar sands mining in northern Alberta; the deforestation Rousing of the Amazon rainforest; water pollution from oil spills; and, mountain top, the Rabble open pit mining. ROY RONAGHAN Higgins is clear about her mission. “Law has facilitated two hundred years of devastation by placing profit as number 1 priority. Now that we have this knowledge and the ability to remedy the injustices that continue on a daily basis, new law can now be put in place to halt the ecocide and protect the Earth.” The term ecocide has been around since the 1970s and is now part of the world-view of the people of Latin America. Bolivia has placed it in their set of laws. There are already four International Crimes Against Peace: Genocide; Crimes Against Humanity; War Crimes; and Crimes of Aggression. Ecocide, a Crime Against Peace of a special sort, would be added. The mechanisms are in place for dealing with the crime of Ecocide. All that is required is the approval of the United Nations. Imagine a time soon when those who commit Ecocide could be tried in a court of law. Imagine how a law of Ecocide might be applied in British Columbia. Where would one begin? Who could be charged? Imagine being able to charge those who have allowed the destruction within the Kettle River watershed over several decades with Ecocide. The regional managers and ecologists employed by the Ministry of Environment, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, ranchers and forest companies would be implicated. In particular, think of the destruction that has gone on unchecked on the Gilpin Grasslands. For over three decades cows have roamed the grasslands with the approval of the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations (MFLNRO) for six months each year. Responsibility for the preservation and protection of the ecosystems within the area and the protection of the endangered species that have survived has been transferred to the rancher who owns the cows. A visit to the area during the summer months is proof enough that Ecocide has been committed. The cows have fouled streams because watering troughs have not been installed or adequately maintained. Riparian areas along streams have been carved to shreds where the cows have gained access to drink and to enjoy the cooler temperatures on hot days. Winter browse for ungulates has been severely cropped or damaged to the point that it will not recover. Habitat for endangered species has been destroyed and from year-toyear has been unable to recover. The perpetrators of the damage are protected because there is no law of Ecocide. Higgins compares her Ecocide law campaign to abolitionism, the civil rights movement in the United States, and the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. William Wilberforce, Martin Luther King, and Nelson Mandela believed in their causes and created momentum. In each of these cases when the majority of people adopted the idea, what was thought to be inconceivable became the reality. Higgins knows she has a huge challenge but she is determined. “I believe we are living at a very crucial time in history when we can do something and make something happen. I believe that we can do this. I also believe that we have a moral duty to do so.” It’s time we began to deal with Ecocide in our watershed.

Consider economic development ideas

Letter to the Editor: Joe Mottishaw’s plea to city council to start listening to the electorate (Gazette, last week), is much appreciated from this quarter. I have tried for years to get someone to take up the cause of these economic development ideas—all for naught. So far. Here are some of the projects I have previously brought up as worthy of serious consideration, none of which has been given a decent airing. Instead of a tarmacked TCC from here to the lake, I proposed establishment of a Boundary Narrow Gauge Railway Society to develop a solar-powered railway service because I believe it would be a huge tourism draw especially if it delivered passengers to a stern wheeler for day-trips on

the water. The old forestry complex on Sagamore become a technical trades training centre. The need is dire. This is a proper place for comprehensive agricultural college proposed years ago. College of the Rockies recently beat us to it. I proposed a substantial city-owned solar power enterprise. Kimberley’s Sun Mine beat us to it. For some time I have suggested that Market Avenue— from 2nd Street up to City Hall—become an attractive pedestrian precinct. In the absence of a major annual wood industry trade show and exhibition in B.C., Grand Forks become the permanent showcase for it. Your readers are invited to

get their heads around the jobs and development prospects and visit appropriate websites. And I’m sure they wish to bring their own ideas forward but there is no forum. It’s time we revisit the community hall prospect; we need serious discussion around amalgamation of the city and Area D; that old Doukhobor settlement on the western approach to the valley is an eyesore and demands clean-up; another car wreck clean-up is overdue. Most urgently we need an economic development officer to test any and all proposals. In passing, I believe we should dedicate a place in the cemetery for natural burial. We can’t afford to have doctors leave Letter to the Editor: Another doctor is leaving Grand Forks, and why? This is not the first doctor to leave here and probably won’t be the last. With so many small towns in need of doctors, why are we making some doctors feel that they have no other options but to leave our town? Are we as patients and residents of the town going to bury our heads in the sand and just accept this? I for one do not want to do that. I would like the other doctors, hospital staff and administra-

tion to explain why this is happening. We cannot afford to have doctors leaving town. As a patient of the doctor leaving, I would like to say I am so sorry you are leaving. You and your family will be missed. Are there any other patients or residents of Grand Forks who will stand up and ask “why” also and stand behind this good doctor and good man? On the water’s edge. It’s where we work. It’s where we play. It’s where we live. It is a special place where people can enjoy the view, learn about nature, and benefit from accessing water. The soils, plants and animals found around the edges of lakes, streams and wetlands are shaped by and depend on the presence of water, and are known as riparian ecosystems. When they are healthy, riparian ecosystems filter pollution, provide wildlife habitat, and help recharge groundwater. But they are also vulnerable to development and over-use. Many of our activities near water—building, paving, clearing, grazing animals and mowing—harm riparian habitat, plants and soils. When riparian areas and wetlands are damaged, not only is local habitat lost but increased erosion and sedimentation can impact downstream landowners and fish habitat. Jenny Coleshill, coordinator for the Granby Wilderness Society, is conducting a study on threats to riparian areas across the Boundary. “Almost everyone directly or indirectly impacts these areas,” said Coleshill. “But we can also all play a role in protecting and restoring wetlands, shorelines and riparian areas.” During floods, our streams and rivers also move around across the floodplain, placing our homes, roads, businesses and farms in harm’s way, as seen last year in Calgary and Colorado. Recently a large segment of the Kettle River west of Midway has been cut off by a new channel,

On April 15, the public is invited to join the RDKB and the Kettle River Watershed Management Plan Stakeholder Advisory Group to discuss issues and strategies related to floodplains, riparian areas and wetlands. The advisory group will use the ideas discussed to develop key parts of the watershed management plan. Between 12 and 1 p.m., we will offer lunch and have informal conversation about the overall watershed plan. Then from 1 to 4 p.m., Stakeholder Advisory Group Chair Roly Russell and Project Coordinator Graham Watt will lead participants through small-group discussions about the issues and potential solutions. After the success of last year’s inaugural Park in the Park Car Show, the organizers are looking at an even bigger and better event this year. “Last year’s event was awesome,” said Lawrence Morgan, who co-organizes Park in the Park with wife Melodie Davidoff. “We had 110 cars registered last year. Everyone that came all said they had such a great time last year that they were coming back this year. We figure we’ll have double if not triple the number of cars this year.” Morgan said they’ve had a number of new cars register for this year already from places such as Prince George and Fort St. John. “We’ve also got one coming from Sitka, Alaska,” he said. “They’ve confirmed they’re bringing their 1968 AMX with a blown big block, 800 horse power.” The car show is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 17 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. and will be back at City Park. “The location was great last year,” said Morgan. “Everybody just loved it. We ended up with an eight page write-up in the Beaumont-Chevelle magazine about how great Grand Forks was.” The inaugural event came from a suggestion to Morgan from councillor Bob Kendal. “I’ve been holding a barbecue at my house for the last 10 years,” said Morgan. “We invite the Beaumont-Chevelle car club because we’re members. Kendal came up to me one time and said, ‘Why don’t you put on a car show because you’ve got these cars coming up here anyway?’ So we said okay, and it’s just boomed.” Although Morgan and Davidoff are avid members of the Beaumont-Chevelle club and have several cars, the show is open to all makes

and models. “We’re working on a guy from Bremerton, Wash. who could be bringing up his 1940 Willie’s Gasser. It’s a $250,000 car,” said Morgan. “We’ve also got some high end builds coming down from William’s Lake and Quesnel. We’ve got a 1967 Acadian coming with close to $200,000 into the car.” There is also expected to be many more vendors selling everything from food to jewellery. “We’ve also got plenty of vintage trailers coming from Vancouver Island,” he said. “We’ve got a category for them. We have possibly a whole bunch of vintage trailers coming from Washington State who will be staying at City Park in the campground.” Another big part of the weekend for participants is the annual car cruise on Saturday which goes from Morgan’s house around the North Fork and back. “We’re going to go behind Extra Foods through to Silver Kettle to give those folks a chance to see the cars,” said Morgan. Any extra money the car show makes beyond covering their expenses will be donated to either the local food bank, SPCA or Habitat for Humanity, said Morgan. Another big draw this year is the appearance of the Blues Brothers and their Bluesmobile. “It’s a 1970 Polara with big, huge speakers and they just pull up in the park and start ‘giving ‘er’,” said Morgan. “They’re awesome.”

As a result, the rear seats do not fold-down to expand the cargo area and there’s a reduced amount of cargo space in the trunk. A push-button intelligent key system is standard on this generation Altima. It’s a convenient feature that allows you to start the engine without actually inserting a key in the switch barrel. The key fob must, of course, be inside the car and is best kept on your person. Altima got the coveted “recommend buy” rating from Consumer Reports. Although higher than usual incidence of brake and electrical repair did show up on owner surveys, the overall rating for reliability was still better than average, with major mechanical issues showing up. A rear-view camera was added to select packages on the sedan and coupe models in 2011 and three new exterior colours are available. Except for Bluetooth connectivity with the optional Luxury Package on the sedan, Altima was unchanged for 2012. The Altima Hybrid, however, was discontinued. I put ads for all three vehicles on Craigslist. Of course my ads said they were all real gems. You’d think people might see through my ads. “Need to sell fast, so price is flexible. Call with best offer.” And my cell number was the same for all three. Would anybody notice? The first two cheaper vehicles sold quickly. The last one took a bit longer to sell. Of course, it was the one I was most eager to sell. Why, you ask? Well, not that I passed the information along, but the auction provided vehicle history reports for the first two. I had no information on the last. So, I bought ICBC and CarProof vehicle history reports. I wanted to educate myself. To my surprise, there was a statement in both reports that the vehicle was possibly “stolen*.” I knew I had to sell it fast. I mean, I’d paid for it and I knew my new “friend” wouldn’t take it back. Four days later, I got a call from a young

Whatever happens next, I don’t care. It’s her problem not mine. I quickly changed my phone number (again). Weeks later, I saw her on the news – with kid still at pant legs – talking to a reporter. Apparently, the car was towed away by the police. And yes, she was trying to find me. Had I covered my tracks? I agonized.

A former Grand Forks teacher has placed first in a regional literacy competition. Leslie Davidson, who taught at both elementary schools in Grand Forks as well as at Christina Lake, placed first in the adult creative non-fiction category at the Kootenay Literary Competition with her story Hold On. Davidson won $500 for the story which details her struggles living with Parkinson’s disease and her husband with Alzheimer’s, and their journey. “It was nice to get the recognition–that was lovely,” she told the Gazette. “With the $500 I was able to use it to support non-profits working for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s research and support. I was nice to know it was read and appreciated.” The award gala took place on March 14 in Nelson, but Davidson was unable to attend. Davidson said she was inspired to write the story from another writer who wrote about postpartum depression. “I learned from a young women who told a very brave personal story about her battles with post-partum depression,” she said. “Telling those hard stories is important for the writer and for those who might read them. It was from her I thought I could do that.” Davidson said writing the story and making it for other people’s eyes helped her clarify her thoughts and feelings.

“The writing imposed structure and discipline on my thinking and that was incredibly helpful for me,” she said. “This is what I’m thinking and this is what I believe.” Davidson has written her whole life. As a school teacher for 30 years, she had several opportunities to write for her classroom as needed. After retiring, she wanted to write the next great Canadian children’s novel. Although that hasn’t happened, she has published a number of stories in Cricket magazine, a well-known U.S. publication. “I’m proud of that,” said Davidson. “They’re a very highly regarded American magazine for children.” Davidson’s prize-winning story appears in the anthology Refuge, which includes all the winners from the 2014 Kootenay Literacy Competition. “When I got my copy of the anthology I was really proud,” she said. “I think the quality of the writing is really, really good. I’m very proud to be part of that collection. I’m thoroughly delighted with the company I’m in.” The anthology is available at Peddlar’s Place on Market Avenue in Grand Forks.

Spring is here and the Kettle River Community Garden is getting ready for another season of growing, learning and fun! A big purpose of the garden is to try new projects in sustainable gardening and share what we are learning. This year the group continues learning about soil building and water conservation, with a composting workshop and work party from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 with ecological gardener and master composter Kim Watt. We will also host drip irrigation and rain barrel workshops in May and June.

In the garden the group is improving plant health and reducing waste and water use by building the soil through composting and mulching. The large composting system needs a renovation and after the workshop, attendees will work together to fix it up. Workshops are free for garden members or your choice of $10 or helping at the work party. Bring refreshments and work clothes! There are many organizations and groups in Grand Forks and the region that rely on volunteers. In honour of volunteer week, which goes April 6-12, the Gazette takes an in-depth look at a few of those groups.

Value of the volunteer immeasurable

Interior Health The Interior Health Authority (IHA), which covers health care throughout the Kootenays and the Okanagan, has an estimated 4,800 volunteers. The Grand Forks Hospital Auxiliary to the Boundary Hospital has 100 volunteers who cover a number of jobs at the thrift shop. Fourteen of the members have been with the association for over 25 years. “We have numerous people doing numerous things like sorting that needs to be done to keep the store running,” said president Carole Richmond. “Our total number of volunteer hours through 2013 was 31,648.” Last year, the auxiliary donated a total of $207,513 to IHA. Of that, $180,000 went to the new cardiac monitor for the Boundary Regional Hospital. “We also give $4,000 in scholarships a year,” said Richmond. The scholarships are for $2,000 to Grand Forks Secondary and $2,000 for Boundary Central Secondary and are earmarked for students entering a medical field. The hospital auxiliary is 100 per cent nonprofit. “All the money we make goes back to Interior Health or to the community,” said Richmond. “People just like to give up a little bit of their time and we know what a big help it is. The hospital would not have the equipment it has if not for what the hospital auxiliary has donated to them. We appreciate all the donations we get.” BETHS The Boundary extreme weather shelter in Grand Forks is operated by the Boundary Emergency and Transition Housing Society (BETHS) and relies heavily on volunteers as well. There are 24 volunteers plus seven board members for BETHS who put in many hours working on behalf of our society, said Jim Harrison, chair of BETHS. “Most of the volunteers work at the shelter between Nov.1 and March 31, 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. assisting our staff in providing intake, cleaning, minor food preparation, making up beds and working with our clients to meet their immediate needs where we can,” said Harrison. Volunteers with BETHS also assist with chores such as shopping, laundry, accounting, counseling and more. “If not for our volunteers in the 2012/13 shelter season we would not have been able to open our doors,” said Harrison. Harrison said that labour law in B.C. requires that one person cannot be alone during evening hours in public service industries and that the

budget of BETHS cannot support more than one paid staff member per night to operate the shelter. Harrison said he volunteers because he has a strong belief in “what we are doing for our community and the need to help those people less fortunate than most of us. “I get a great degree of satisfaction in seeing our goals being met and our society growing. I also have a deep appreciation for all the support we enjoy in our communities,” he added. Food Bank Don Todd, volunteer coordinator for the Boundary Community Food Bank, said the food bank relies heavily on their very capable volunteers. He said they have 36 volunteers who last year contributed over 2,500 hours and are on track to top that number in 2014. The food bank is open on the first four Tuesdays of the month from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. “On our pre-pack day, which is usually near the end of the month, our volunteers load nonperishables into pre-pack for approximately 150 hampers,” said Todd. “The hampers contain the nutritional staples that are available in our stockroom and are designed to help stretch an inadequate food budget by providing an addition 12 to 15 meals a month for each person.” Todd said the volunteers are motivated by many different things: empathy for those less fortunate in our community; a desire to live in a healthier, stronger, safer community and the satisfaction of being a positive contributor to their community. “Some may remember a time when they relied on a food bank themselves and wish to repay the favour,” said Todd. “Others prefer to pay it forward.”

Minor hockey Sports, whether it is community or high school, also rely on volunteers to fill many roles to ensure as many kids as possible can participate. Grand Forks Minor Hockey Association (GFMHA) has approximately 30 volunteers filling many varied roles such as: fundraising; organizing tournaments; managing safety and risk; organizing equipment; coordinating coaches; scheduling referees; and communication. “All of these volunteers play important roles because without the volunteers, we don’t have an association and we don’t play hockey,” said Ron Vautour, GFMHA president. “These volunteers allow us to have hockey in our community.” Vautour said he sees many reasons that people volunteer. “Sometimes they volunteer primarily because of their own kids,” he said. “Some volunteer because they recognize the need and the value for the activity and/or for the community. Some volunteers to help all of the kids and to support the community. Some see it as an act of service to the community.”

A mom and a son come home from the grocery store. The boy immediately empties out a box of animal crackers and the mom asks him why. The boy says, “You should not eat it if the seal is broken, so I’m looking for the seal.”

The Boundary Youth Soccer Association (BYSA) kicked off their 2014 spring season on Sunday with a plethora of games which took place at Grand Forks Secondary School. This season, BYSA has approximately 285 kids currently registered including 50 in the Kicks For Kids (K4K) division which is free and for kids four and under. In all, BYSA has 26 teams in Under 7, U9, U11, U13 and U16. Communications direction Ian Mitchell said the league tries to get together and have all games on the same field at least two or three times per season including the wrap-up tournament. “This is known as the jamboree format and it really contributes to a great community/festive vibe,” said Mitchell. “We feel it makes the day an event beyond just showing up to play your game against one other team and leaving. Another huge benefit is that we have many families with multiple kids playing and this allows ‘one stop shopping’ so they can see all their kids without an excessive amount of extra travel.” Mitchell does add that they cannot do the jamboree format every weekend due to a shortage of fields that are big enough to accommodate the whole group, as well as the need to spread out home games to teams in the West Boundary and Christina Lake. Mitchell said the schedule is still being worked out but that all the teams will be back at GFSS this Sunday. Players can still register by going to the league website, boundaryyouthsoccer.com. Playing soccer has several great benefits such as allowing kids to be active while having plenty of fun. “It’s also a pretty ‘beginner friendly’ sport, too, in that it doesn’t really require specialized skills such as skating or skiing in order to participate” said Mitchell. “If you can run and kick, you can get started playing soccer.”

If you are thinking about a career in aquatics and are not sure where to get started, GFREC can help you. The courses required to become a certified lifeguard are offered at Grand Forks Aquatic Centre throughout the year. As your child complete the Red Cross swim lessons, he or she can move into the advanced leadership program. Listed below are the steps to becoming a certified lifeguard.

Canadian Swim Patrol The Canadian Swim Patrol Program involves Rookie, Ranger and Star. This program provides enriched training for children who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim and leads into the Bronze Family program. The Bronze Family program consists of Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross. This program is designed for swimmers who are looking to further enhance their lifesaving knowledge and skills for a variety of situations. Bronze classes prepare participants who are wishing to become lifeguards for the National Lifeguard Award (NLA) and Aquatic Emergency Care. Those wishing to take Bronze Medallion must be 13 years of age or have Bronze Star. Those

National Lifeguard Award (NLA) National Lifeguard Award is a program designed to prepare and certify candidates to be lifeguards. People who are looking to lifeguard at swimming pools, water parks and lakefronts must have their NLA certification. This program focuses on the legal obligations of lifeguards, team work, advanced emergency care in aquatic emergencies and spinal immobilization. Candidates wishing to take NLA must be 16 years of age, have previously taken Bronze Cross and have a Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care/CPR-C/AED certification. The Bronze Cross and National Lifeguard Award can be used for high school credits as well. GFREC will be offering the NLA

Wheaton’s prepared speech was about her idol, singer Miranda Lambert, while her impromptu speech was about peer pressure. “Miranda Lambert has been my idol for a long time,” she said. “Speeches are easiest when you know about the topic. I felt like I did really well.” Wheaton, who also played for the Grand Forks Secondary junior girls basketball team this past year, said that she’s actually stronger at the impromptu category. “I act and I do a lot of improv in acting,” she said. “I feel I’m strong at that and that’s not a skill a lot of people have.” There are three judges who

A local Grand Forks Secondary school (GFSS) student excelled recently at a 4-H district competition. Josie Wheaton, who is in Grade 10 at GFSS, finished second in the speech category at the senior level. The competition took place in Castlegar in early March. By finishing in the top two in the region, Wheaton qualified for the regional championships which are in Salmon Arm in May. Millicent is survived by sons Ted Harrison (Susan), Clay Bishop (Agnes), and Bill Funston; her grandsons Chris Harrison (Jenn), Oliver Harrison (Sheena) and grand daughter Amanda Koppin (Ben); great-grandchildren Jessica and Amelia Harrison and Caleb Koppin. Mom loved her family with all her heart and will be deeply missed. Mom moved up from the coast to Grand Forks in May 2008 and was warmly welcomed by the excellent staff at Boundary Lodge. Keiya Oye On March 29th 2014, Keiya Oye, loving husband and father passed away peacefully at the Boundary Hospital in Grand Forks , B.C. with family at his bedside. Keiya was born January 01, 1934 in Steveston, B.C. He is survived by his wife Judy, sons Laurence and Jason, daughter in law Yasuyo, and grandchildren Zara and Masamichi. Also survived by his brothers Toru and Kenji and sister Sumiko. Keiya had worked for CPR for a few years, then at Pope and Talbot in Midway, BC for 33 years. Keiya enjoyed karaoke with his wife, friends and family. During his retirement he enjoyed golﬁng and ﬁshing. We would like to thank his family doctor, the doctors and staff at the Boundary Hospital for their excellent care of Keiya over the years, and also extend our thanks to Boundary homecare support services. He lived a simple life with simple and true values. He always had a smile and enjoyed chatting with friends. He will be sorely missed. Ben and Helena Schmidt celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary last week at the Bored Room Bistro in Midway with family and friends. They were married in Greendale, which is now called Sardis. They had five children, but Ben and Helena count the spouses as family and insist that they have 10. They enjoy 18 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Ben was an educator. He recalls his first job was in a one-room schoolhouse in Salmon Valley.

Ben worked for 34 years as a teacher and principal in Grand Forks. He was the principal at Hutton Elementary for 17 years. He also taught at Perley Elementary, known then as Grand Forks Elementary. Helena and Ben now live in Parkview Manor in Midway. They met in Grade 10. She was the cute girl in the desk in front of his. They kept in touch after graduation and started dating five years after graduation. Ben proposed to Helena in a rowboat on Cultus Lake. When that story was told one of the family joked that the rowboat venue had been used so she couldn’t run away.

Learning curve steep April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month

In simplest terms, Parkinson’s disease results from the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the basal ganglia area of the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a “brain juice” that makes it possible for one cell to talk to another. Among other good things, dopamine helps manage movement. Research now tells us that the disease is much more complex than this simple version. Several other neurotransmitters are affected and the prefrontal cortex area of the brain is involved and perhaps the whole digestive system. There is also complicated brain stuff, like tau and alphasynuclein proteins, which play a role. This complexity helps explain why the cure, that has been “just around the corner” since the 1960s, remains elusive. A person with Parkinson‘s disease (PWP) might appear to be a sloppy drunk, or move very slowly, REMATION tremor violently, or struggle with a task requiring RNS motor dexterity, and an hour later, seem almost LACK RANITE normal.
