Chlorine leak evacuates pool Gazette staff PORT HARDY—A literal mix-up at Port Hardy’s Recreation Centre led to the evacuation of the swim-
ming pool and the medical treatment of a daycare group Tuesday morning. The incident was still under investigation when
the Gazette went to press, but early reports suggest that two chemicals were improperly mixed by a Rec. staff member leading to the
formation of Chlorine gas which then diffused into the main areas. The mistake was immediately realized and the
pool closed, but staff and a group of pre-schoolers

Investigation promised into leak from Page 1 in the change rooms at the time of the incident were exposed to the gas. RCMP, firefighters and paramedics were on the scene within minutes and those exposed — including three District employees, nine pre-schoolers and childcare providers — were taken to Port Hardy Hospital as a precaution and later released. District representatives have promised a full investigation into the incident but praised the quick reactions of staff. “The District takes the utmost precautions,” said Mayor Bev Parnham. “Staff did the right thing in evacuating.” She said that the operator involved in the error is extreme-
ly well-trained and a “seasoned” member of staff, noting that WorkSafeBC had been alerted to the incident and would look into the circumstances alongside the District’s own investigation. “I really don’t know what happened,” she said, “we’ll have to wait for the outcome of the investigation. I am pleased that correct procedures were followed and staff put their emergency training to use.” Deputy Fire Chief Brent Borg said that the scene was under control by the time the firefighters got there. “We just went in and did the ventilation and confirmed the evacuation — made sure everybody was out.” It was unclear how long the building
would remain off-limits, the period dependent in part on the pending investigation. “It could conceivably be a couple of days,” said the mayor, adding that she hoped for a quick turnaround in this case. On behalf of the District, the mayor apologized to those affected. “Obviously we’re apologetic,” said Mayor Parnham. “Thankfully, these sorts of incidents are extremely rare, we have a really good safety record. It’s unfortunate there were people in the building at the time, of course we’re wishing those people well. “For those people, we sincerely apologize and will do everything possible to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Meeting sought with board from page 1 on Quadra Island — would impact 16 employees and roughly 2,000 customers. “We considered the impact to our members, employees and communities before making these difficult decisions,” said Adrian Legin, President and CEO of CCCU. “While these were very difficult decisions, I’m confident the actions we’re taking are the right ones and in the best long-term interest of our 110,000 members and clients, and our organization as a whole.” The changes come following a review by the credit union of its services in all branches and regions, which determined the affected branches are not “financially viable.”
But the institution has not told local leaders how much the branches are losing. “So far they have not been forthcoming in individual branch profit and loss statements,” said Michael Berry, Alert Bay mayor. Berry, Regional District of Mount Waddington Area A director Heidi Soltau of Sointula and Noba Anderson, Soltau’s Cortes Island counterpart with the Strathcona Regional District, are working together to try scheduling a meeting with CCCU officials during this weekend’s Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) conference in Parksville. If that yields no satisfactory result, they
plan to attend the CCCU AGM, set for Apr. 16 in Nanaimo. “I do not see this as acceptable,” Nelson
said. “We have some people who are going to actively look for solutions. As a membership, we deserve to be heard.”

Most plastics eligible for curbside This is the second in a series of columns describing changes coming to North Island residents with the implementation of the MMBC recycling system, which begins May 19. In last week’s North Island Gazette, I wrote about upcoming changes to recycling and garbage collection on the North Island. Front and centre in the article was the start of curbside collection of recyclable materials in Port McNeill, Port Hardy and Coal Harbour. These communities will be joining Alert Bay, which has had this service for a few years
already. While the ability to put out your recyclables out at the curb side will make the process easier, it is critical that North Islanders understand what they can place at the curb in relation to the new service. The items that often take up the most space in your garbage bin are plastic packaging. These range from plastic jugs containing detergent to clamshells holding baked goods to those plastic flower pots you get when you buy a plant at the nursery. Usually you can find hidden at the base of
the container a Polystyrene — North Island one that can go number from 1 recycling to 7 with a triin curbside recyangle surroundcling and one that ing it. Given the diversity of can’t: • Rigid polystyrene (aka these types of materials, the public can get very confused Type 6 Plastic) — clam— including me. shell, tubs, cups and plant For the past month the pots can go in the curbside RDMW Curbside Recycling recycling. Guide, which has been • Foam polystyrene — printed in some commu- foam egg cartons, meat nity newsletters, indicates trays, hot drink cups and Type 6 plastic (proper name packing material need to be Polystyrene) is not permit- taken to a recycling depot ted curbside recycling. The and cannot be put out for guide was created by me and curbside collection. The key idea to keep in I was wrong. What North Islanders need to know is mind is it’s the retailers and that there are two forms of manufacturers who cover
the cost of the new curbside recycling program and the program’s purpose is to divert their packaging from the landfill. Other plastic materials you might wish to recycle but are not packaging must be brought to an eco-depot where they can be sent to the landfill for eventual processing. Included among the plastic items that should not go into the curbside recycling bin are containers with deposits. These can be taken to any outlet that will reimburse you or wait until a volunteer fund raising event occurs like the hockey or
Girl Guide bottle drives. By the time you read this in the North Island Gazette, I will have a guide with pictures on the Regional District’s web site (www. rdmw.bc.ca) to give everyone proper direction. If you still have questions, feel free to send me an email at info@rdmw.bc.ca. Next week’s article: “New Materials that North Islanders Will Soon be Able to Recycle”. Stop the bleeding of healthcare services
Dear editor, An open letter to interested parties: Everyone talks about the doctor shortages and lack of services, but many other medical services are also being eroded at our local hospital. Both Port Hardy and
Port McNeill have ultrasound machines sitting in heated rooms in each hospital, not being used. Lack of trained technicians is the excuse. Meanwhile, every person requiring an ultrasound needs to line up and wait for an appoint-
ment in Campbell River. Not only do these people need to pay the cost of travel but many need to take time off work and therefore lose a day’s pay. Each of these people still are required to pay the same amount for health care premi-

ums as those persons in the south who are better served. For us, it is less services and more pay. Many people can be at risk because of long wait lines. I am a prime example myself. Monday, Mar. 10, I went in for
a physical. I have an aortic aneurism (AAA). The doctor indicated that the bulge in my artery appeared to have increased in size and ordered an ultrasound. Faxing off a requisition to Campbell River, I finally got an appoint-

Making history Eke Me-Xi students and staff pose with filmmakers after last week’s successful screenings at the Elders’ Hall on Tsulquate. The students each produced a short film on themes including history, culture and identity under the guidance of experts from the One World group. Their films were unveiled to a packed house of around 100 last week, with unanimously positive reviews. Also shown at the event was a preview of teacher Jamaine Campbell’s project. Campbell took historical footage from the 1951 documentary Blunden Harbour and overlaid commentary from elders to add a new dimension of understanding to the footage. The students’ work can be found at the Eke Me-Xi Facebook page. A O’Toole
As April rolls in, you may have noticed a proliferation of yellow daffodils not just popping out of the ground, but pinned to people’s jackets, and on the counter of your local supermarket check-out. April is the Canadian Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Campaign. Thanks to the society’s tireless effort over the years, survival rates of cancer, of those diagnosed, have increased from 25 per cent to 60 per cent since the 1940s. Many people hope to avoid cancer all together, and while there is no exact formula, general healthy living can help to reduce your risk of getting cancer. Smoking is probably the first lifestyle factor that comes to mind when considering cancer. Quitting (or not starting in the first place) can reduce your risk of not only lung cancer, but also 15 other cancers thought to be related to cigarette smoke. Skin cancer has been on the rise for some time now, so being safe in the sun is important. Be aware of the UV index, and the times of day that are better to stay inside. When outside cover up, wear sunscreen and remember the sun is always out, even when cloudy! Healthy eating, particularly eating a diet high in fruits, vegetables and fibre, and low in processed foods has been shown to reduce the risk of about one-third of all cancers. Exercising at least 30 minutes a day has been linked to a reduction in colon, breast and ovarian cancers. This column is sponsored by Visit www.cancer.ca for more information on cancer prevention.

NICS goes back to roots Gazette staff PORT HARDY—The North Island Concert Society will close out its 16th season Saturday by getting back to its roots. Or, more accurately, getting to the roots of Juno-nominated singer-songwriter John Wort Hannam and the Blue Collars. The 7:30 p.m. show at the Civic Centre kicks off with opening act Erin Junkala, a singer-songwriter who lives in Coal Harbour. Hannam, who sings and plays guitar and harmonica, will then take the stage with Tyson Maiko on upright bass and multiinstrumentalist John Ellis slinging mandolin, dobro and guitar, as needed. The Alberta-based Hannam is a storytelling songwriter from the John Prine/Steve Earle school of social consciousness, irony, humour and metaphor. His 2009 release Queen’s Hotel was nominated for a Juno for Best Traditional/Roots album

Rumblefest tumbles from 2014 schedule Gazette staff PORT ALICE—After 20 years of drawing Vancouver Island’s top mountain bike racers for a weekend of cowbell ringing, horn-tooting and general mayhem, Rumble Mountain will go quiet this spring. Rumblefest, which had become a fixture on the Island Cup
downhill racing schedule, has been cancelled this year, the victim of a shortage of organizers and sponsors, said longtime volunteer Tanya Spafford. “We’re hoping it’s not a permanent thing,” said Spafford. “But we kind of need a new group to come in; we need some new blood.”
Rumblefest, typically run the second weekend in June, once featured the Rumblefest cross-country race Saturday, followed by a bike rodeo and barbecue, and the Rumble Tumble downhill on Sunday on a course that drew rave reviews from visitors from across the Island.
Dwindling turnout resulted in the loss of the cross-country race following the 2011 event, though the downhill continued to draw competitors in the Island Cup points series. Spafford has been aided in recent years by fellow organizers Derek Koel, of Port McNeill
and Brad Sedola, of Port Hardy. But Sedola has moved from the region and Koel is busy with both a job and his own business, said Spafford. Putting on Rumblefest was more than simply organizing the race itself. Most of the real work took place well before the arrival of the riders, in prepar-
ing and grooming the steep, twisting trail. “It’s physically demanding,” she said. “You’re out there on the trail every week getting it ready. “We hit our 20th year and it kind of feels like we closed a door behind us,” she added. “It was a great, fantastic run.”

Cost Effective—Sometimes prices at local businesses are better because they don’t have the overhead that larger stores may have and they may be more willing to negotiate to meet your price needs. Less “Leakage”—Local businesses tend to buy and sell with other local businesses. With national or multinational companies, a percentage of that profit ‘leaks’ out of the community, the province or even the country.
