Surrey needs French immersion fix: Parent

Michael Le testifies his former gang cohorts admitted to Surrey Six murders

Finding school space and qualified teachers a challenge, education board chair says

by Sheila Reynolds FORMER RED Scorpion gang leader

Michael Le said he had just finished test-driving luxury cars on Oct. 19, 2007 when he received a panicked call from fellow gangster Matthew Johnston, who said he needed to meet him urgently. The pair met at a shopping plaza where Johnston revealed that the murder of a rival drug dealer in Surrey did not go as planned. “Mike, I’m sorry, but we killed Eddie,” Le said Johnston told him, referring to Eddie Narong, a friend of Le’s since middle school. Le – who struck a Haevischer plea deal in November and admitted to his role in the Surrey Six murders – began testifying against his two former co-accused on Tuesday in B.C. Supreme Court in Vancouver. Johnston Cody Haevischer and Johnston are currently on trial, each facing six counts of first-degree murder in connection with the execution-style shooting of six men in a Surrey apartment building on Oct. 19, 2007. by Sheila Reynolds SHE BEGAN dialing as soon as the phone lines opened at 5 p.m. on Jan. 15. In fact, Erin McCall and her friend were hitting redial on three separate phones – a landline and two cellphones – simultaneously, hoping someone on the other end of the Surrey School District’s “telephone lottery” for French immersion registration would pick up. Having graduated from a French immersion (FI) program herself, there was no doubt McCall wanted her daughter, Elle, to start kindergarten in the specialized language program this fall. “Why not?” she said when asked why she wanted Elle in FI. “If your child has the chance to learn one of Canada’s other official languages, why wouldn’t you do it? It’s a great benefit in terms of the job market, the learning outcomes studies have show math and sciences are a lot stronger for kids in Erin McCall French immersion. Why not give them that extra advantage?” Finally, after 40 minutes on the phone and more than 800 dial attempts, instead of the usual busy signal, one of the phones connected. McCall was then on hold another 20 minutes and when someone answered, she was number 192 in line. Like everyone before and after her, she was asked to give her first and second choice of the six Surrey elementary schools that offer early (kindergarten or Grade 1) French immersion.

“It’s really not a lottery... because a lot of parents have these telephone parties...”

EVAN SEAL / THE LEADER

Erin McCall reads a French book with her daughter Elle Miller at their home in South Surrey. McCall wants to enrol Elle in a French immersion school, but even after participating in an onerous phone-in registration system, her daughter remains on a lengthy wait list.

Former city councillor Trial: Resumes on April 23 to re-enter politics Surrey First Education adds familiar faces to its team

by Sheila Reynolds

FORMER SURREY city councillor Gary Tymoschuk, who also served a term on school board in the late ’90s, will be vying for a spot at the Surrey Board of Education table in this November’s civic election, The Leader has learned. Tymoschuk confirmed Wednesday he will be running as part of the Surrey First Education team, which includes current school trustees Shawn Wilson, Laurie Larsen, Terry Allen and Reni Masi. Bob Holmes, president of the Surrey DPAC (District Parent Advisory Committee), has also been recruited as part of the sixperson Surrey First team. Tymoschuk was a Surrey school board member Gary Tymoschuk from 1996 to 1999 and then served two terms on Surrey council between 1999 and 2005. He said he decided to re-enter politics because he wants to be further involved in the community. “It’s important for those of us that have that interest to be able to do what you can to shape the community for a better place for all,” said Tymoschuk, who is currently on the Surrey Crime Prevention Society’s board of directors. He said he chose to run for school trustee as opposed to city councillor due to the time commit-

ment and his ability to balance the part-time education role with his full-time job. (City councillor is considered a full-time position). “I’m not one of those people who’s going to take on something as a resumé filler or be a seat warmer,” Tymoschuk said. “Do I have an interest in council? Sure, but I don’t want to take on that kind of responsibility and then have to compromise by not fulfilling to the best of my ability.” Holmes has lived in Surrey and White Rock for 30 years and has been active on the PACs (Parent Advisory Councils) at his childrens’ schools for a decade, as well as being on several school district committees. His kids are in Grades 6 and 9, and he feels it’s time to have a parent of current Surrey students on the Bob Holmes board. The Surrey First Education slate was selected at a meeting April 6. Longtime Trustee Pam Glass, who was part of the Surrey First team, is currently on a medical leave of absence from the board and has indicated she will be retiring at the end of the current term and therefore not run in the next election. Trustee Laurae McNally, who is the board’s White Rock representative, says she hasn’t yet given any thought as to whether she’ll run in November. Trustee Charlene Dobie confirmed Wednesday she will be seeking re-election.

From page 1 Le said Johnston went on to tell him that Narong showed up at the apartment where a hit was planned on Corey Lal. Not only were Narong and Lal killed, Le said Johnston told him, but four other men as well: Lal’s brother Michael, Ryan Bartolomeo and two bystanders who were in the wrong place at the wrong time – fireplace repairman Ed Schellenberg and student Chris Mohan, who lived in a neighbouring suite. “You’re an idiot. Why did you kill so many people?” Le said he asked Johnston. Johnston, he said, replied: “Mike, they saw our faces, we had no choice.” Le, now 29, was originally charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy in connection with the case, but pleaded guilty to only the conspiracy charge last year. He received a 12-year jail sentence, minus double credit for the four-anda-half years he’d already served, leaving about three years remaining. The media was banned from reporting details of his plan to work with Crown and testify against

Haevischer and Johnston until Monday, when B.C. Supreme Court Justice Catherine Wedge set aside the publication ban. Publication of Le’s image or descriptions of him are still banned. Le testified Tuesday that days after talking to Johnston, he also met with Haevischer. He said the two communicated using an erasable white board. “He wrote down ‘six people got killed’,” Le

“You’re an idiot. Why did you kill so many people?” Michael Le told the court, adding Haevischer indicated he had shot three and another gangster (Person X, who pleaded guilty in 2009 and cannot be named) shot the other three victims. Earlier in the day, Le testified Corey Lal became a target due to an ongoing dispute with Jamie Bacon, the other leader of the Red Scorpions. Bacon’s crew had

merged with Le’s in 2007. Talk about friction between Bacon and Corey Lal began shortly after the merger, Le said, noting Lal was partners with Narong in the drug trade. They got their heroin from Sophon Sek, (who is also charged in connection with the Surrey Six case but is being tried separately), said Le. Le said he met with Lal to attempt to iron out the issues between Lal and Bacon, but the problems persisted. “He’s a little bitch, I’m going to jack him,” Le said Bacon told him. The Crown’s theory is while Lal was the intended target of the slaughter, the five others were killed to eliminate any witnesses. It’s alleged Bacon (along with Le) enlisted Haevischer, Johnston and Person X to carry out the hit. During his November guilty plea, Le admitted he gave the go-ahead for Lal’s murder, but never intended for the other five to be killed. Bacon is charged with one count of first-degree murder and one of conspiracy to murder Lal, but is being tried later. The trial has been adjourned until April 23.

132 Street. Within minutes, the man punched the operator in the face before jumping off the bus. The bus was travelling at approximately 30 km/h and pulling into the left-turn lane at 144 Street at the time of the assault. Despite having received a severe blow to the face which caused broken nose and facial bones, profuse bleeding and impaired vision, the operator was able to bring the bus to a stop and open the doors to let the attacker off. Metro Vancouver Transit Police Crime Reduction Unit launched an investigation which, despite the lack of onboard surveillance video footage, led to the identification of a suspect. He was arrested by Transit Police officers on

April 2 in Newton while driving a stolen vehicle. Sean Tyler Quaye has been charged with driving while prohibited and assault causing bodily harm. Quaye is well known to police, particularly for crimes involving violence. He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on April 11 in Surrey Provincial Court. At the time of the attack there were approximately 30 passengers on board the bus. By the time police arrived, many had left the area. Investigators would like to speak to everyone on the bus at the time of the incident. Some may feel they saw very little but even small pieces of information may assist in the investigation. Witnesses are asked to call Transit Police at 604515-8300.

Schools: Already overcrowded QUICK TAX REFUND says, noting the district is always working to entice new teachers to take French training because they’ll get a job almost immediately. The board recently asked staff to do a core review of its choice programs, including French immersion, to examine how registration can be improved, as well as how to better sustain programs and meet demand. But McCall, who isn’t sure where her daughter will be going to school in September, wants less analyzing and more action. “If you’re going to say ‘we can’t do anything’ or ‘we have to study this for a year,’ that’s not good enough. That’s not an answer to me.”

She gave her picks – Laronde Elementary and Peace Arch Elementary – but Elle didn’t get into either. (Callers don’t have the opportunity to give a third choice). Elle currently stands 12th on the wait list at Laronde, and 18th at Peace Arch. McCall has been told chances are slim her daughter will make her way to the top of either list. “It’s frustrating,” says the mom of two. “It’s really not a lottery at all, because a lot of parents have these telephone parties where they can stack the deck and the more people you know with cellphones, the more calls you can make.” The fight for French immersion spaces is not a new problem or one that’s particularly unique to Surrey. In many districts, just as it used to be in Surrey, parents are still forced to camp out overnight in hopes of securing a French immersion space. McCall says at least with that system, you know exactly where you stand. She’s had to call the individual schools to know where her daughter is on the wait lists. There are currently about 3,300 students in French immersion in Surrey – about five per cent of the district’s total enrolment. Canadian Parents For French says while Surrey has demonstrated strong leadership when it comes to French language education, the district needs to ensure families have an equal opportunity to participate. McCall agrees, and argues that not only should the registration system be more transparent, but Surrey should shift resources to accommodate parent choice. “We’re not asking for extra space or extra resources,” she says. “These kids are going to get resources whether they’re in English track or French, it’s just a matter of accommodating and so far nothing is being done.” But Shawn Wilson, chair of the Surrey Board of Education and representative on the French immersion advisory committee, says it’s not as simple as it sounds because of this district’s rapid growth. One of the two biggest issues to expanding FI is school space, he says, as the majority of the district’s schools are already busting at the seams. “It’s a real dilemma.

If you’ve got a school in (K.B. LETTERS

Thank you, volunteers

IN HONOUR of National Vol-

unteer Week (April 6-12), The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) would like to thank its incredible and dedicated volunteers. We couldn’t do what we do without them. CNIB provides communitybased support to ensure Canadians who are blind or partially sighted have the confidence, skills and opportunities to fully participate in life. Our volunteers are there every step of the way, helping us to better serve our clients. In the Lower Mainland-South

Coast region over the last year, 166 volunteers contributed to the Vision Mate program, providing one-on-one sighted assistance to people in their neighbourhoods who are blind or partially sighted. The hours of client service these volunteers provided are equivalent to six full-time positions. Vision Mate volunteers helped their clients pay hundreds of bills, buy enough groceries for thousands of meals, read a small library’s worth of books, newspapers and magazines, walk thousands

I received my ICBC renewal notice for my car. I am invoiced 4.9 per cent more for the basic coverage, which amounts to an increase of $44 after my 43-per-cent discount. ICBC states in the cover letter that the BC Utilities

Commission has approved this “interim” rate hike since November 2013. Then the letter continues to reassure, “We are also able to reduce our Optional rates to lessen the impact on you.” Well, I am covered for my collision and comprehensive parts of optional insurance through other private insurance companies, leaving ICBC to cover only the third-party liability. The bill that I received did not “reduce,” but actually increased the impact on

me by demanding $50 more this year for the third-party liability. Overall, I am billed $94 more than the last renewal period. Imagine more than two million B.C. residents being billed $100 extra this year – that is a whopping extra revenue of more than $200 million for ICBC. Who regulates the ICBC rate hikes on optional insurance items? T. George, Delta

Rules remain murky for TransLink tax vote Victory threshold, campaign controls unclear: Critic by Jeff Nagel PROPOSED legislation

on a future referendum on new taxes for TransLink expansion leaves major unanswered questions as to how the vote will be conducted, says one observer. Jordan Bateman, B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, said he was stunned by how few specifics the province spelled out for the referendum in Bill 23, which will be debated in the legislature this month. “It’s really the wild west,” Bateman said. “There are virtually no rules in it whatsoever.” Absent from the bill is any concrete definition of the winning threshold. It merely says Metro Vancouver mayors’ council must demonstrate “to the minister’s satisfaction” that a majority of the region’s voters support the use of new funding sources to pay for the proposed package of transportation upgrades. Bateman said it’s unclear if that means a 50-per-cent-plus-one referendum result passes, or if a higher threshold will apply. Also unclear is whether a majority vote counted across the whole region would pass, or whether it must also pass in most of the region’s 22 municipalities. If the votes are tallied only as a region, Bateman said, it will unfairly give too much clout to the biggest cities of Vancouver, Surrey, Burnaby and Richmond and risk a questionable result if it passes in those big cities but not in most smaller municipalities. Surrey and Vancouver,

Jordan Bateman which both want major new rapid transit extensions, together have nearly half the population of the entire Metro region.

He argued the winning threshold should be 50 per cent plus one regionally and also passing by a simple majority in two-thirds of the municipalities, similar to the rules for referenda run by Elections BC. Instead, the very brief bill exempts the TransLink referendum from the regulations that apply in a provincial referendum. Bateman said the proposed legislation is also devoid of rules on spending limits during the campaign, or of any definition of TransLink’s

role, including oversight of TransLink-issued information about the plan. “One lesson of the HST referendum was the blowback the provincial government got when it was being too aggressively pro-HST,” he said. It’s no surprise the legislation doesn’t yet spell out what new taxes or tools might be used to fund TransLink. The province is still considering the options, which include a vehicle levy, a regional sales tax and road pricing. See MAYORS / Page 12

draw up that plan without knowing yet what sources the province would approve, subject to referendum, or the total amount of money available. “We’re no closer to knowing what may be allowed,” he said, but added mayors are working in good faith on the basis the province will support use of a new source. Road pricing might be pursued over the longer term, but not in the short-term referendum, which could be held by mid-2015. Mayors fear the province will once again reject every potential new tax or levy except higher property taxes, which city councils refuse to raise further for TransLink. The blame for higher TransLink property taxes tends to fall on cities and come at the expense of their ability to fund more municipal services, while the province sees other sources as cutting into its own revenue streams. “It’s all about protecting tax room,” Walton said. “So it’s a little bit of a poker game.” He noted TransLink needs to raise an extra $200 million per year just to restore service to the levels of three years ago, never mind extra for major new capital projects. The new provincial legislation allows TransLink to continue to raise three per cent more from property tax each year – about $9 million extra – without the mayors’ consent.

espite a positive balance sheet and “new core values” presumably different from those influencing ‘the old GM’ to delay recalling for at least 10 years sub-compact models with faulty ignition switches allegedly linked to at least 13 deaths and 31 front-end crashes, ‘the new GM’ is straddling the recall issue. CEO Mary Barra has commissioned a full internal report, but when asked by a congressional sub-committee in early April if she would fully share it, she refused such a commitment. Reports indicate, however, that “GM has hired compensation expert Kenneth Feinberg, who has worked on large-scale events from 9/11 to the BP Gulf of Mexico oil [spill] and Boston Marathon [bombing], to look at how the company can respond to families who lost relatives in accidents.” Since first announced in February, the recall has also grown to include “models of the Chevrolet Cobalt, Malibu and HHR, the Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and the Saturn Ion and Sky.” GM is also under deadline pressure to answer over 100 questions about the switch posed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which now claims GM “didn’t provide enough information to the agency about potential safety issues.” The scope and seriousness of the problem may also be widening. Reports say, “Lawmakers are also exploring whether another 14 fatalities could be connected to the faulty ignition switches, citing data from the NHTSA regarding newer models of the recalled cars. Those deaths

occurred in accidents with vehicles displaying some of the same problems as those in the earlier fatalities.” Other reports say the US Justice Department has launched a criminal investigation, and that several lawsuits have been filed against the company. GM’s recall issue has also brought scrutiny to bear on the NHTSA with NHTSA Acting Administrator David Friedman being formally questioned along with GM’s CEO. He said his agency is conducting an active investigation into whether GM followed the law, but it too also faced challenges. Panel chairman Rep. Tim Murphy, R-Pa., asked, “Can you fix [your] website to help consumers?” referring to a screenshot of the NHTSA website, which he characterized as providing, “a minimum of information.” Mr. Friedman said that the NHTSA is “retooling some of its methods and protocols in the wake of the ignition switch issue.” Some reports mention the October 2011 audit by the Department of Transportation’s inspector general which found that NHTSA “lacks systematic processes” for tracking consumer complaints, ensuring timely investigations of defect complaints and training investigators. NHTSA answered that it has made improvements since the 2011 report. Once any link is even suspected between fatalities and injuries and a vehicle’s design or a part defect, alarm bells should start ringing in the offices of both the car company and the government safety regulator. Consumer advocates challenged the car companies— especially General Motors— with this lesson back in the 1960s. And the NHTSA owes its start to the 1966 National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act passed unanimously by Congress partly in response to the book, Unsafe at Any Speed, and concern over the staggering number of traffic fatalities nationwide. …by Cedric Hughes, Barrister & Solicitor with regular weekly contributions from Leslie McGuffin, LL.B.

Found guilty in July 2010 of two counts of impaired driving causing death and bodily harm and two counts of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm, Berner began serving her sentence in March 2013, following unsuccessful appeals of her convictions and sentence. In addition to prison time, Berner was handed a five-year driving ban. She is up for statutory release in November. Meanwhile, efforts to recognize police officers who put extra focus on getting impaired drivers off the road continues. Ceremonies inducting officers who remove at least 12 such drivers from the road in a calendar year onto Alexa’s Team are held throughout B.C. – including in South Surrey – annually. Wednesday, the efforts of more than 100 officers will be celebrated during an event at Southridge School in South Surrey.

Polygon unveils new community in Richmond: Avanti By Kerry Vital

Polygon Homes is bringing something brand-new to Richmond with Avanti, a three-tower community with an urban park. “The Avanti community is located in one of the best locations in the City of Richmond,” says Polygon Homes president and CEO Neil Chrystal. “Situated just one block east of the Aberdeen Canada Line Station, Avanti residents will be

steps away from hundreds of services, shops and restaurants including Aberdeen Centre and T&T Supermarket.” The first phase includes Richmond’s first Flatiron design building, a 15-storey tower with 164 one- and two-bedroom homes. Many of the homes will offer a panoramic view of the city, urban park or the North Shore mountains. Among the features in the homes will be engineered stone countertops, glass-tile backsplashes, flat-panel cabinetry and warm wood-style laminate flooring.

NEW HOME DEVELOPMENT

The adjacent urban park is one of the best amenities at Avanti. “The park will have a public plaza for live performances, an interactive walking path, green space and luminous art by internationally renowned Pacific Northwest artist Dan Corson,” says Chrystal. “Avanti allows residents to live, commute, shop and relax within a two-block radius and Polygon is ecstatic to contribute to the exciting transformation of this entire neighbourhood.” The park is expected to be completed in 2015, and the first tower in 2016. Other amenities include a residents-only Jewel Box-style clubhouse with a fully equipped fitness centre with a dance and yoga studio, recording studio, games room and hotelstyle rooftop with a grand whirlpool. There will also be a Googleplex-influenced multimedia lounge. The sales centre will open on April 12. For more information, check out www.polyhomes.com, call 604-2769186 or visit the sales centre at 8311 Cambie Road, Richmond.

The CresseyKitchen is one of the most stunning parts of the homes at Cadence, with stainless-steel appliances, quartz countertops and a marble backsplash. Homeowners will have access to tons of amenities, including an expansive podium rooftop garden. Other beautiful features of the homes include wide-plank engineered hardwood flooring, large windows and a rain shower head in the bathroom for an extra luxurious feeling.

Richmond’s healthiest homes at Cressey’s Cadence By Kerry Vital

Luxury and style is evident at Cressey’s Cadence, a new project in Richmond’s Oval Village that will eventually include two residential towers and tons of amenities. “This is the first master-planned mixeduse community in Richmond,” says David Evans, development manager for Cressey. “It’s anchored by the Oval itself, and everything is built up ... around it.” The location is one of the driving forces behind Cadence. Just a block from the water and its leisure and recreation opportunities, Cadence will be one of the most wellconnected developments in the city, with shopping, dining and transit all within walking distance or on-site. “People are recognizing the benefits of the Oval Village,” says Evans. Healthy living is top of mind at Cadence, especially with its proximity to the Richmond Olympic Oval. “We have a grand perspective for interior

air quality, earth, water and personal wellbeing,” says Evans. “Each suite has individual water filtration and energy recovery ventilation that brings fresh air into each home.” Every suite will have air-conditioning to keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, as well as an outdoor space perfect for entertaining and over-height ceilings that contribute to the airy and spacious feeling. Cressey has decided not to include carpet in the homes, and instead features wide-plank engineered hardwood flooring throughout, with tile in the bathrooms. Perhaps one of the best parts of the homes at Cadence is the famous CresseyKitchen, with stainless-steel appliances, fully integrated Chef ’s Wall, polished quartz countertops complemented by a marble backsplash and European-inspired full-height cabinetry and task lighting. “People are thrilled and surprised by the kitchen itself,” says Evans. “It’s like a kitchen in a single-family home. It’s a show-stopper.” Elegant bathrooms have quartz countertops and wood-grained floating vanities with under-cabinet lighting and a modern polished marble tile floor. The ensuite has heated tile flooring by Nu-heat, for that extra touch of luxury. A rain shower head adds a spa-like feel to the space, complemented by stylish chrome faucets. Continuing the theme of healthy living at Cadence, there will be a branch of Steve Nash

Fitness World on the ground level, and every homeowner will be given a membership. There will also be an array of shops, restaurants and other commercial spaces on the bottom level, making running errands convenient. An expansive podium rooftop garden will feature an outdoor patio and barbecue area, outdoor fireplace, reflecting pond, private gardening plots and a children’s play area, among many other amenities. Cadence will also have a private concierge service. For more information, visit www.cressey. com/cadence or call 604-276-8683. The presentation centre in Richmond is open by appointment.

variable valve timing, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The two base engines available are a solid 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5 version, both of which are likely adequate for commuter use. I headed straight for Highway One and it positively purred along the long, clear stretches open to the daytime driver. Great acceleration in take-off and passing with limited lean and sway when cornering at speed. Back in urban madness, it offered a good view of fast encroaching vehicles from side streets and the rear. I mention this because I expected the sleek window profiles might hinder views, especially to the rear. Hence, it was also not as much of a beast to park at the supermarket as I had feared. Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek. The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports. Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/ highway). That said,I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. That caution should not stop you from taking one for a spin. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek.

Learn why we're better than bi-weekly at: ToyotaBC.ca

The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports. Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/highway). That said I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. That caution should not stop you from taking one for a spin.

Reader Yvonne Logan thinks there should be a universal hand signal that would alert a following car’s driver that they have left on their high beams. “I’ve tried sticking my hand out the window and waving and even hitting my brake lights three times as some sort of signal,” Logan writes. “Never any luck with that, so I end up just praying that an oncoming car will flash their lights. It’s blinding and obviously dangerous . . . I feel like I’m being chased by a jet!” What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Confessions of a Curber

Thank goodness, the stolen vehicle was behind me. Did I feel bad? Yes. Does it make me a bad person for selling a stolen vehicle? Probably. But to outsiders, my life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same old Walt. Oh, if they only knew. I was on a roll. To my disbelief, I’d sold seven cars already. I guess you could say it was a part of me now – I “flip cars on the side. And, I was branching out – with a truck and camper. The truck had been rebuilt. It was roadworthy again. I even had the inspection records to prove it. And the camper? That was marketing genius. When I put it up for sale, I fibbed. But only a little bit. “Truck for sale. Fixed after fender bender, looks new. Includes camper. It’s been in an accident, so I’m selling both for a low price. Great for family adventures. Call if interested. Shortly after, I got a call. The man had a distinct, charming accent. He asked me what a “fender bender was. I explained that it was a small accident. He seemed pleased and asked to meet me the next day. I assumed he was relatively new to the country, so I thought this would be an easy sale. Boy was I wrong! He’d gone to “new immigrant welcome classes, where they shared information about life in Canada. I think this was where he developed an interest in camping Canadian style. He knew all the right questions to ask. But, I

gave him all the wrong answers. And, I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy for the truck to be safe. He also asked for a vehicle history report. I pulled the CarProof report out. I mean, I had nothing to hide. He asked me what “rebuilt* meant. I told him that, because of the small accident, the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Oh, but I’d altered the sections detailing the amount of damage. Judging from his English skills, I’m sure he didn’t understand the difference. At least he was trying. He got an “A for effort. I hope he figures out that the truck and camper would be unsafe on the road when he gets it fully loaded with passengers, fuel and gear. Good thing I have my “no returns policy! Yes, I know what you’re all thinking. This is the lowest of the low. But you have to understand. I was slightly manic about this whole thing. At this point, I would do anything to make a sale and get myself another wallet full of cash.

exhibit include self portraits and digital films to pieces that incorporate technology. Williams paints vivid landscapes and animals. Her work is focused on the natural world, mainly the landscape of the B.C. interior. Through her work, she aims to bring attention to the issue of farm animal welfare; her family makes its living in the cattle industry. “I want to inspire a different way of thinking about topics such as the treatment of cattle in Canada and how the cattle industry receives undeserved negative attention in terms of husbandry and care,â€? she says. Her colleagues’ subjects include ambiguity, isolation, meditative journeys, memories and more in NinetySeven Days. For Cale Guy, the message isn’t so clear cut – or is it? – and that’s by design. He uses semiotics, the study of signs and symbols, in his work. Guy has lived in Kelowna, Houston, and even New Orleans but is now back in his hometown. He first became interested in semiotics while taking an art history course. That, he says, is when he first understood how semiotics could fit into his own work as an artist. His works are collages and three-dimensional pieces that blend historical and modern themes. He was used to working from sketches, but this past semester he found that his usual process wasn’t having the desired effect in collage. Eventually, he learned to let go. “I found the less I planned, the more successful the end result,â€? he said. â€œI began to learn the value of truly paying attention to existing images and how I could recode them into something new.â€? Ninety-Seven Days runs April 11-13. The opening reception is April 11 at 6 p.m. The exhibition is open to the public. Admission is free. The gallery is located in room 1843 at Kwantlen’s trades and technology campus, 5500 180 Street, Cloverdale. Use the east entrance.

PBL season starts Saturday at Whalley Stadium

Young Chiefs ready to play

by Rick Kupchuk

IT WASN’T the preferred option,

but player movement has forced the Whalley Chiefs to become a younger group for the coming B.C. Premier Baseball League season. With several players in their graduating season opting to leave the elite under-18 team during this past offseason, five players from junior programs have been moved up to the senior team. “Six players with one more year of eligibility left us for greener pastures,” said Chiefs general manager Paul Hargreaves. “The first thing you will notice is we have a lot of younger players. Losing six guys hurt us. But we’re rebuilding and we have some good, young talent.” Catcher Colton Wright and outfielder Jacob Robazza are the lone returnees. But they aren’t the only players with PBL experience on the Whalley roster. Pitchers Trevor Henits and Max Williams were added to the Chiefs lineup after both were cut by the North Shore Twins in January. Jordan Dray is the top prospect in the infield, which has four newcomers. “He is arguably one of the top two Bantam (under-16) players in B.C.,” said Hargreaves, adding several other players have come over from B.C. Minor baseball organizations to join the Chiefs, including infielder Lucas Soper and catcher Spencer Rankin. “This is the best group of B.C. Minor kids we have had since 2005,” Hargreaves added. “They are all good kids. “Our strength is we’ll be able to hit the ball, we’re not so sure about our pitching.” It isn’t that the Chiefs don’t have pitchers. It’s just that the Whalley team has only one

Others who will pitch will also be position players as well. “We only have 18 players on the roster, so we can’t have a lot of pitching-only players.” The Chiefs begin their 48-game regular season Saturday

against the Cannons with a double header at home at Whalley Stadium. The first game is scheduled for noon. Following league play, the top eight teams advance to the first round of the playoffs in late July. Four best-of-three quarterfinal series will produce four finalists

for a championship tournament hosted by the Chiefs at Whalley Stadium. If the Chiefs aren’t one of the final four teams, they will be added as the fifth team for the round robin competition. “North Shore (Twins), Langley (Blaze), Vancouver (Cannons) and probably the Victoria Mari-

ners are the odds-on favorites to reach the final four,” said Hargreaves. “We should make the playoffs, and we will compete against the top teams.” John Parker will be the team’s manager this season, with Randy Elrick and Mike Addy serving as assistant coaches.

NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING In accordance with Section 741 of the Local Government Act, the Board of Trustees of the Logging Ditch Improvement District will be holding their 2014 Annual General Meeting to present the audited financial statements for the preceding year. This meeting is open to the public and will be held:

Paxton pulled on Opening Day Muscle strain for former North Delta Blue Jay by Rick Kupchuk FORMER NORTH Delta

Blue Jay James Paxton has pitched well in his first two starts of the Major League Baseball (MLB) season with the Seattle Mariners. But a muscle strain forced him out of Tuesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Angels at Safeco Field in Seattle, and has left Mariners officials a little concerned. The 25 year-old from Ladner gave up three earned runs on six hits, two of which were firstinning home runs on Opening Day in Seattle. He had four strikeouts, and hadn’t allowed a hit in four innings when he allowed a leadoff single in the sixth. Feeling discomfort in his left shoulder, he left the game, but was the winning pitcher in a 5-3 victory. “It’s just a little strain,” Paxton told mlb.com. “I’m going to go get an MRI to see what exactly is going on in there, but I just want to be careful right now. My strength is still good, they said, so I just want to get it checked out.” Paxton pitched one season for the Blue Jays in the under-18 B.C. Premier Baseball League, before accepting a scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky, where he played from 2007 to 2009. He signed with the Mariners in 2010, and began working his way through their minor league system. He saw his first action in a Major League Baseball uniform last September, starting in three games and pitching

five innings of relief in one. He was 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in 24 innings of work.

He pitched his first game of the season April 2 in Anaheim, throwing seven shutout innings

in an 8-2 win over the Angels. He allowed two hits and a pair of walks with nine strikeouts.

INFORMATION

Richard Carey Shermann Nov. 12, 1990 – March 30, 2014 Richard could run like the wind and now he has left us behind to live within it. Taken from his inconsolable family at only 23 years old in the early morning of March 30, Richard was loved without reserve by his mother, Linda, father Leagh and older sister Tara of Cloverdale. He always made time for his grandmother Marge Kent of Vancouver and his grandparents Roi and Carell Shermann of White Rock. Often called Richie by friends and family, his cousins, aunts and uncles and many, many friends feel his absence keenly. Richard was a happy individual. More importantly, he made others happy. His smile and outlook on life was always bright. His too short, life was punctuated by the things he loved – family time, his friends, sports and the outdoors. Referred to as ‘our mudbowl baby’ Richard was born November 12, 1990. An incredibly active and adventurous child, he was skiing by the age of 5. Every winter family friends, Kurt and Charmaine made sure Richard had a home base to indulge his passion on the slopes of Hemlock Mountain. Growing up, it was quickly apparent Rich had inherited his father’s sprinting ability and his mother’s determination. He distinguished himself playing both high school and community football in Langley. But it was golf that claimed his teenage pursuits. Named for his grandfather Richard Kent, they shared a passion for golf that grew over the past five years to the point where Richard was quite accomplished. He shared the love of golf with his Uncle Bob, and often played with his Uncle David and it encouraged his Dad and buddy Steve to take up the game even though they had little hope of catching him. Again, Rich had a step on them. Summers from early childhood were spent outdoors. Richard loved summers in Osoyoos wakeboarding behind Uncle Steve’s boat and shared many happy weekends on Gossip Island with the Friesens. The Hyneks and Shermanns were an extended family spending many weekend and summer vacations together plus regular trips to Mexico where each family member contributed to incredible memories. All the ‘kids’ planned their work around family trips to Tulameen and Whistler. In addition to his parents and sister, Richard has left behind his uncle David, Aunty Cyndy and Liz, uncle Steve, aunty Mary, Lisa, Bryan and Bobbie, grandma Marge, aunty Linda, grandma Carrel and grandpa Roi, aunty Carelyn, Montana and aunty Shelagh. His grandpa Richard Kent and uncle Bob Kent predecease Richard. Richard has left us much too soon. He loved and was loved. Deeply and unconditionally. For those that knew Richard, they may recognize him some day soon in the wind that swirls by. The soft breeze he’ll lay across our cheek will temper the gusts of emotion that will buffet us. Richie will never be forgotten. A celebration of Richard’s life is planned for 11:00 am, Saturday, April 19 at Newlands Golf Course in Langley. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to your favorite charity.

VAN GARDEREN, Breunis It is with great sadness that we announce that Breunis (Bruce) Van Garderen has gone home to be with the Lord at age 64. Bruce was born in Veenendaal, The Netherlands on January 28, 1950. He died on April 5, 2014 at Langley Hospice surrounded by his loving family. Bruce was diagnosed with cancer in January. After a brave fight he was called home to be with his Lord and Saviour and is now safe in the arms of Jesus. He is predeceased by his mother Neeltje (1985) and his father Pieter (2006). He is survived by his loving wife Ridi, his children Peter (Amanda), Elsabee (Jeff) and Sebastiaan (Amie) along with his grandchildren, whom he adored; Alexa, Kristian, Mattheus, Shaylynne, Wyatt, Tobiah and Esme. He is also survived by his two brothers and two sisters in Holland and many nieces and nephews. In 1967 he met Ridi, the love of his life. They married in 1970. Bruce, Ridi and their three small children emigrated from Veenendaal to Canada in 1981, settling in the Cloverdale/Langley area. In Canada he worked as a comptroller, then owned and operated two import businesses before pursuing his true passion and talent as a full-time gardener. Bruce was well known and much loved in his community, mainly through the friendships he established in his work with the Maples Discovery Co-op Gardens in Langley as well as the Grace Community Church in Surrey and later Christian Life Assembly in Langley. In recognition of his all-natural gardening advocacy and leadership he was named Langley’s 2010 Environmental Hero. Bruce was very active in the community and served as a mentor to many. He touched countless lives through his positive attitude and by making a conscious, daily effort to serve as a reflection of God’s love for all people. He is dearly missed. A public celebration of his life will be held at Christian Life Assembly (21277 56th Ave, Langley) on Wednesday, April 16 starting at 7pm. “I am with you always”Matthew 28:20
