SD8 staff suggests moving Homelinks to CLES
If there is broad support for Bill 24 and changes to the way the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) is governed, it wasn’t evident at Monday night’s Creston Valley Food Action Coalition meeting. “A lot of us who have read the bill really closely are very, very concerned,” said Nadine Ben-Rabha, whose family operates a dairy farm that produces organic milk and cheese in Lister. “There has been no public consultation with farmers or the public. This is your farmland as well as the farmers’.” Ben-Rabha’s sister, Erin Harris, who also works on the family farm, made the news on Monday when she and a fellow farmer from Windermere set up a table in front of the B.C. legislature to display a cornucopia of Kootenay agricultural products. The display was intended to counteract a comment by Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett, who has been quoted as saying that as a resident of Cranbrook all he can eat in a 100-mile diet is hay. Bennett was also the minister who oversaw a core review of government services that led to Bill 24.
Recommendations from staff to the School District No. 8 (Kootenay Lake) board have raised concerns about the future of Creston’s Homelinks program. A report from Supt. Jeff Jones given to the board at the April 1 regular meeting recommended that Homelinks students from kindergarten-Grade 9 move from the Creston Education Centre (CEC) to share existing space at Canyon-Lister Elementary School (CLES), and that students in Grades 10-12 be supported through the Prince Charles Secondary School Learning Centre. Homelinks, which allows parents to home-school their children while having access to a teacher and social activities, has 147 students from 65 families, and is overseen by a district vice-principal. SD8 has four Homelinks classes — Creston, Kaslo, Nelson and Slocan Valley — and the Creston program is the only one that is not co-located in an existing public school and operated by that school’s principal, the other three having made that transition this school year.

responses by parents contacted during the community engagement process, and no specific numbers related to the proposal. “I don’t think that this report should be given any credence whatsoever. … “Is totally abhorrent to all of the parents sitting there,” HamblerPruden said via videoconference from the Nelson school board office, referring to the gallery watching the meeting in Creston. “In my opinion, you have a summary of the information that was gathered,” countered Jones. “I only got it tonight,” said Nelson trustee Bob Wright. “I don’t know if it’s incomplete or not.” In accepting the report, the board of education approved an amendment from Crawford Bay-East Shore trustee Lenora Trenaman directing Jones to

The report was received for information by the board, but not before a motion by Creston Valley trustee Annette Hambler-Pruden to reject the report was defeated. bring to the next meeting information she felt was missing, specifically, how the move would impact other programs operating in the CEC, the future of the CEC and the way facilities would be utilized at the receiving schools. The board had been expected to vote on the recommendations at the April 22 meeting, but with the additional information being presented at that time, the vote may be put off. “My thinking is the board will receive the information and choose to review it,” said Jones. The presentation of the report came as a surprise to local teachers, who, along with Homelinks parents, weren’t consulted during the process, according to Creston Valley Teachers Association president Rebecca Blair. That disrespect, she said, created anxiety for parents and teachers. “I’m surprised this recommendation has gone forward before anybody actually had that conversation with staff,”

said Blair during the public comment portion of the meeting. Creston and District Community Resource Centre (CRC) executive director Serena Naeve also felt the school district showed disrespect to the CRC, a community partner that operates seven early childhood programs in the building in collaboration with SD8 since 2000. “If Homelinks was removed, all the programs would be in jeopardy,” she said. In April 2010, the SD8 board voted to maintain the facility after public outcry arose when its closure was considered, displacing both early childhood programs, as well as occupational, physical and speech therapists. “To keep fighting for this model since 2000 is really exhausting,” said Naeve. Hermen Koehoorn was one of several Homelinks parents in attendance who spoke against the proposal. He questioned the effectiveness of the “extensive consultation process” mentioned in the report, noting that the final recommendation was the same as the original recommendation. “It feels almost like the input was not really wanted, just a matter of process,” he said. “We didn’t want our children to be subjected to the peer pressure from public school,” said Amanda Cannon, another Homelinks parent. “Our children have expressed that they feel betrayed.” Cannon said that she and her husband are researching other options that would allow them to remain loyal to their children’s needs if changes are made at Homelinks. Cody Beebe, a parent from CLES, spoke on behalf of a group of parents, none of whom wanted Homelinks to move to their school. The report says that space at CLES is “more than adequate to meet the needs of the Homelinks program,” but Beebe’s group argued that there is no “empty” space at the school — rooms with lower use house music, language arts and special needs — and that whether the program is at CLES or CEC, it takes up the same amount of room. “If I held up a blanket, cut off the bottom and sewed it on top, it’s still the same length,” he said. Beebe also expressed concerns about security — CLES is locked down during the day, but visitors to Homelinks can come and go as they please. Homelinks teacher Laurie Riehl also expressed concern. The last time the idea of colocating the schools was examined, Homelinks and CLES each had about 80 students, and it was decided there was no room to house both in one building. Now, the schools each have about 150 students. Of the 65 families in Homelinks, 19 said they would not continue to register their children if it moves, and not one family said they would continue, Riehl told the board. Both Homelinks and CLES parents have agreed that co-location would not be a good fit, calling CLES as a “hostile location.” “I personally don’t see a good mesh between these groups,” she said.

REVIEW
Collier’s new novel won’t be a secret for long BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
With the release of Confined Space two years ago, friends and acquaintances of Deryn Collier were excited to learn she had a reputable publisher (Simon & Shuster Canada) and that it received good reviews across the country. We were determined to like the book even before we opened it up. Collier, after all, was one of us. She had worked at several local jobs, was a familiar fixture at Kingfisher Used Books and she and her schoolteacher husband, Ron Sherman, were raising their kids here. It didn’t hurt that Confined Space, set in the fictional town of Kootenay Landing, had an air of familiarity, much of the story taking place in a brewery and all. We could pick out landmarks and neighbourhoods, maybe even put an unintentionally familiar face to one of the crime fiction novel’s characters. Now, with the release of her second in a series, Open Secret, Collier doesn’t get the same slack. She lives in Nelson, where Sherman is a school principal, and she only returns to Creston occasionally. Kootenay Landing still seems familiar, but it now has a bit of a Queen City feel to it, too. Luckily for Collier and her readers, she doesn’t need to be cut any slack. From the first page, Collier demonstrates the confidence of a writer who has found her stride. With surefooted, long and confident
Changes
From page 1 Ben-Rabha told a group of about 30, many that sell produce at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market, that dividing the province’s protected farmland into two zones is a mistake. “They (the government) don’t understand that what’s grown in Zone 2 is connected with what’s produced in Zone 1,” she said. Under Bill 24, Zone 1 land on Vancouver Island, the Southwest Coast and Okanagan would continue to be treated as primary farmland. Other areas, including the North and the Kootenays, would see a shift in priority. Applications to change the use of Agricultural Land Reserve parcels in Zone 2 would be assessed with a different set of standards, including economic development priorities. Ben-Rabha said the changes could have a dramatic and undesirable effect on the Creston Valley. “There is no recognition that the Creston Valley is a lush and vibrant agriculture community,” she said. “Even people being hopeful that their land can be cut up into smaller
steps, she speed-walks right through a sophisticated series of plotlines. Invigorated readers keep pace, absorbing energy from their fit and energetic muse, taking only the shortest of breaks to catch their breath before springing along though the next twists and turns.
Open Secret picks up the story of coroner Bern Fortin, a retired career army man who has chosen Kootenay Landing for its remoteness to his past. Scarred and damaged by his experiences in far away war-torn countries, Fortin wants nothing more than to forget, but his past isn’t one that offers escape. Only weeks after wrapping up his first mystery in Kootenay Landing, Fortin is once again drawn into the
dark side of small-town life as a series of seemingly unrelated incidents begin to merge into a complicated whole that revolves around the illegal drug culture. Collier neatly makes the connection between the innocent use of marijuana in natural health remedies and the infiltration of organized crime into a largely unaware rural community. The North American “war on drugs” is rightfully controversial. It’s been a spectacularly unsuccessful effort and that keeping so-called soft drugs like marijuana illegal chews up resources and starves governments of tax money. But there is no getting away from the fact that organized crime now controls much of the drug trade, including marijuana — right here in Creston we have had murders that tie to the business. Like it or not, there are no easy answers to the problem we have created, a premise that Collier explores without ever getting political about it. Along the way, readers of Open Secret are introduced to new characters and get to better know others that were introduced in Confined Space. They are invariably compelling as the author breathes life into her supporting players as well as those in lead roles. I finished Open Secret within 48 hours of receiving my advance copy from the publisher. And despite Collier’s admonition as we chatted by email — “Whoa! Slow down! It took me two years to write that
parcels is enough to drive up land prices.” The Harris family farm is about 100 acres, she said, but numerous small leases total about 600 acres, where feed for milk cows is grown. Loss of access to leased lands would threaten the value-added production of milk and cheese. “Worst case scenario: We lose our farm,” she said. “Jobs, economic activity, everyone in the community loses.” Randy Meyer, who produces hay, cattle and chickens, said he, too, depends on leased land. The loss of agricultural land to other uses would have a negative impact on local food production, he said. “There is nothing definitive in this legislation that allows parcels to be divided, and there are farmers that changes can help — if it’s done right,” he said. He encouraged residents — producers and consumers — to contact local politicians to express their views. Canyon resident Pat Martin said it was important to recognize that changes to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) affect everyone, and that more emphasis should be
placed on supporting food production in the province. “Farmers who are struggling in this valley are our problem,” she said. Putting the Creston Valley into Zone 2 and changing the way the ALC operates by placing applications for change in the hands of government appointees is the wrong way to go, said Joanne Galius, who farms with her husband in Canyon. “The arm’s length relationship with the ALC has been beneficial to us,” she said. “We need that to continue.” Julie Groot, whose family has long been involved in food production, including market gardening, orchards and greenhouses, cast a lone dissenting voice. Small parcel owners are hamstrung by current regulations that restrict land use to agriculture, she said. A small parcel that can’t produce minimum sales requirements loses farm status and is subject to much higher tax rates. “In 2009 this government cut the Ministry of Agriculture budget by 30 per cent,” BenRabha said. “And now they tell us these changes are to help farmers. It doesn’t make sense.”
book!” — I never felt like I was rushing. Quite simply, I got caught up in the story in the first pages and I didn’t want to put it down. I did force myself to slow down for the last quarter of the 427-page novel, though, trying to stretch the enjoyment out a little longer. Crime fiction is one of my favourite genres.
AT
And, if I didn’t know Collier at all, after reading Confined Space and Open Secret, she would still be among my favourite authors. She is that good. End of story. Deryn Collier will be at Black Bear Books on April 16, signing copies of Open Secret from 2-4 p.m., with a book launch to follow at 7.

Strong season took Thunder Cats farther than ever before
Police news
BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor
The Creston Valley Thunder Cats' 2013-2014 record wasn't simply better than last season's; it was an almost total reversal, with 17 wins and 28 losses becoming 39 wins and 17 losses. That about-face helped the team move farther than ever before, ultimately losing to the Beaver Valley Nitehawks in the third round of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League playoffs. "I thought we were going to have a good year and some good opportunities," said head coach and general manager Josh Hepditch. "We knew if we started with a core of players who came back, if we filled in a few holes, it would be a good team." Hepditch said he and the team made some mistakes last season, which cut short their play — they finished at the bottom of the Eddie Mountain Division without advancing to the playoffs — but with those lessons learned, the team returned stronger than ever. "For the guys who did come back from last year, I'm so glad they did. ... They were able to reap the benefits of going through the hard times," said Hepditch. This season, he said, the team was better able to trust the plan he and assistant coaches Travis Ludwar and Leigh Walker put in place, a plan that went beyond merely learning skills. "The biggest thing was just respect," said Hepditch. "We respected them as players and they respected us as coaches. When you do that, you can have a lot of fun." A core group of experienced players returned this season, which proved to be an advantage, but five 20-year-olds — Jesse Collins, Trevor Hanna, Brandon Formosa, Andrew Hodder and Jonathon Watt — are aging out. Three of them are among the KIJHL's top 20 scorers, with Collins' 91 points placing him second for the season, with Formosa in sixth place and Hanna in 12th.

(Logan Styler, in his first year with Creston, follows in 14th place.) And Hodder and Watt are two of the team's leading defencemen. "Those are going to be huge holes to fill," he said. "I don't think you can ever replace Trevor Hanna. He's been the heart and soul of the team since he got here." This was Hanna's third season with the Thunder Cats — his points jumping from 29 to 59 to 71 over the seasons — and he will be moving on to Vermont's Castleton State College on a scholarship next season. While filling the holes is a challenge, it doesn't necessarily spell disaster for the team. Although a core group returned for this season, 13 new players arrived, 10 of them rookies. "For thirteen new guys to come in and do what they did, it's awesome," said Hepditch. A decided advantage over last season was the team's stability. Only a few players were replaced before the trade deadline — compared with the total of 39 who wore Thunder Cats jerseys over the course of the 2012-2013 season. The Thunder Cats found their rhythm early in the season, winning at least one game in each of their first several weekends, leading to a 13-game winning streak early in 2014. Crowds of over 500 came out to many games, with 1,000 in the audience for the game 7 win over the

Kimberley Dynamiters in the second round of the playoffs, when the Thunder Cats won that round for the first time. Although that win was "unbelievable", Hepditch said, the team didn't know how to react emotionally, which ultimately led to the Thunder Cats losing in five games to the Nitehawks in round 3. "None of them had ever been to the third round before," he said. "I think it made them hungry to try and top what they did this year." With a solid core hopefully returning, Hepditch is looking forward to watching their games improve alongside the newcomers. "The process of the whole year is what I as coach enjoy the most," he said. "It's awesome to see kids we had at training camp last year and see the growth after two years. I thought the whole year got better every day." And with his second year of coaching Junior B hockey at an end, Hepditch is already looking forward to next season, as he passes on skills that will stick with the players for years to come. A lesson learned?
We have the answer. Now what was the question? Only a few months ago I expected to be writing an entirely different column after learning the outcome of a Quebec election called by Premier Pauline Marois specifically to give her Parti Québécois (PQ) a majority government. So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye, was to be my message, perhaps not as tuneful as the von Trapp family version, but a heartfelt reversal of attitude after many decades of supporting Canadian unity and Quebec’s place in my own vision for Canada. I am surely not alone in feeling that The Rest of Canada has done its fair share in making sure Quebecers feel at home within this huge and diverse confederation. Somehow I have managed to overlook my years of pathetic French classes, in which we endlessly repeated mind-numbing phrases about the activities of the dreaded M. and Mme. Thibault. I have come to terms with half of my cereal box being given over to a language that I never came close to mastering. Shouldering the cost for a Francophone to get government service in his own language, regardless of where he is in the country? Hey, it’s the least we can do. And then the election results roll in and as quick as we can say Robert est ton oncle, Marois and her team have been given the derriere’s rush and a Liberal government is back in power, with Marois’ dreamed-of majority, no less. Eighteen months in the doghouse and a far from cleaned up bunch, not having had a real chance to rid itself of the cynicism
and isolation that inevitably takes hold in long-governing parties, the Liberals are back in the driver’s seat.
Liberals a four-year reward, less for being what they aren’t than what they are? After all, even the resounding defeat of the PQ didn’t drive a wooden stake into the heart of separatists. “We will never give up,” said one possible successor to Marois. Karl Peladeau was no less defiant, fresh from his own victory in an election that pushed Marois out not only from the premier’s office but from her Lorne Eckersley own constituency. “As I have said since last summer, I had the utmost confiHard to imagine that Marois dence that Quebec voters would managed to effectively drive away reject the negative, divisive politics the PQ’s soft support in such a short campaign. IMF taking control of Ukraine To the Editor: (Re: “Ukraine Unrest Part of U.S. Plan”, March 27) It was refreshing to read the letter by Anton Skerbic, who presented the Ukrainian situation from the view of the other half of the world in a clear and professional manner. To ferret out declarations from various western leaders regarding their involvement in support of the coup against the democratically elected president of Ukraine must have taken some painstaking research. Many of his statements are corroborated in online sources I have been reading. I was quite surprised to read in the March 29 Vancouver Sun an article that concurs with the strong involvement and influence of neo-Nazi activists in the Ukrainian uprising itself, who are now members in an independent militia that seems to have both the government and its regular military intimidated. That the purpose of this whole enterprise is to take over, through the aegis of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the economic control of Ukraine is corroborated in a recent article by Paul Craig Roberts (www.paulcraigroberts.org), former assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury for Economic Policy and associate editor of the Wall Street Journal. The IMF will require the dismantling of any social security remaining for Ukrainians and will facilitate the takeover of national industries by foreign companies. Another goal, of course, is the inclusion of Ukraine in NATO, he predicts. I would not be surprised if the U.S. added to its hundreds of military bases around the world by constructing another one in Ukraine. Many innocent and well-meaning citizens of Ukraine unwittingly got caught in the protests, and unfortunately they will pay a heavy price through economic deprivation prescribed by the IMF. Ukraine seemingly just follows Yugoslavia, Iraq and many others. I recently read in the popular press that Canada is preparing to follow up its adventures in Afghanistan by beginning the mining of that country’s plentiful mineral resources, hopefully not in the style of their South American operations. Fortis bills too high for residents To the Editor: As many of you are aware, the recent Fortis BC work stoppage and rate increases have resulted in astronomically high power bills being received. While we also realize that these must be paid because consumption has occurred during this time, it poses undue hardship to most of us, as previous bills were estimated. This bad feeling could not have come at a worse time. Christmas just passed, as well as one of the coldest winters Creston has had in many years. Many of us have called Fortis

and been requested to hold for as long as 30 minutes to one hour or more for a customer service representative. We are then told we can make a payment plan but another bill is due and if we breach our repayment we will be set up for disconnection. Fortis is the only choice we have, so there is no solution. As with the Fortis estimates, we too can estimate how much a month we can afford to pay and it comes nowhere near what they require. This billing in some cases is over a six-month period and Fortis wants it paid as soon as they can get it, but since many people are on a fixed income this means they have to take money from other expenses to compensate. It will take six months before our bills are paid in full, and that is if a certain amount is paid monthly and not knowing what the next bill will be. If you would like to voice your concerns, please contact Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall at 1-877-3884498 or BC Utilities Commission customer service specialist Patrick Wruck at 1-800-663-1385. Maybe a better solution can be found for repayment should this happen again. Linda Wellspring Lister Helga Schmidt Erickson
Gadicke showed strong ethics To the Editor: Yes, he is our accountant but methinks that it’s time to proclaim publicly our longstanding respect and loyalty to Mr. Gadicke. Not only is he a professional by calling, but he demonstrated his professionalism and strong sense of ethics by indicating that the current dispute is a private matter between two parties. When all is said and done, this unfortunate state of affairs may be resolved by the generous action of the Family Practice Associates Clinic coming to the rescue of the stranded physicians and their clients. More docs needed to serve valley To the Editor: I had a fall on the ice in January requiring a visit to the emergency room. Upon the visit, the physician at Creston Valley Hospital was very good and went out of his way to get me in to see a specialist the next day in Cranbrook. At the Cranbrook hospital, I spent five hours waiting for the specialist, whom I had an appointment with. The CT scan took five minutes and then it took two or three hours to get the results. Meanwhile, five weeks since the fall, I was still not able to use my hand. I was told that everything should be fine but to have it checked by my doctor in seven to 10 days. How do I do this when I have no family doctor? Do I go back to sit at emergency for another five hours? Will they be able to refer me for further treatment? Is this what we can expect from the medical system that we pay for? If so, then maybe all of
us should curl up in a corner and give up. I don’t think so. The government needs to put more funding into recruiting physicians so that we can all have access to medical care. I agree with the statements by director John Kettle in the winter Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B newsletter that having people go to the emergency is not the solution, and I do encourage people to email for the required form to provide more information about how many people do not have a physician. However, can they not get some idea of this from the emergency reports? I would like it understood that I am not directing this to a bad doctor or a bad system. I am directing this to people that need a little bit of help in order to survive. If this is too much to ask, then why are we paying taxes and why are we paying government health fees? If we cannot get the help that we need, we may end up back in the old ways, when there was no medical care and people died young and suffered needlessly. I know how frustrated I am. I can only imagine how it would feel to be a parent with young children and not be able to have a family doctor, to have to sit with them in emergency for hours on end. To the politicians out there: If this were your child, wouldn’t you want and expect the best care for them by the system that you pay for? I know my daughter, my grandchildren and I deserve the best, even though they are not as rich and do not make the money in a year that most politicians do. They still deserve the best of care. We all pay for our medical system, so why are we having such a hard time getting someone to look after us? I think that our government needs to look very closely at taking less jet rides and putting more funds into getting more doctors. I realize that this has been looked at before, but overlooked due to politicians’ salaries. So therefore, we all suffer. Can somebody please explain to me when this is going to stop, when we can actually pay for our medical situations and not our politicians’ salaries? Dwight Hazen Yahk

Earth more than 6,000 years old To the Editor: This writer takes the biblical view that the Earth is over 6,000 years old and that creation took longer than six days. We should accept that “day” and “period of time” are the same word in Hebrew. The daytime as we know it was not arranged before the fourth “day” of creation. In 2 Peter 3:8, it says, “Do not let this fact escape your notice that with the Lord, one day is as a thousand years.” The Bible starts with, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth.” Genesis 1:2 explains, “And the Earth was empty and devoid of all life.” Stop. Take a breath. So before the creation account of all living plants and life starting in Genesis 1:3, there was a lifeless planet we call Earth, which then could have been several millions of years old. To those who insist all planets were created in one day, besides the billions of stars, let us consider their sizes. The sun is more than 1,000 times bigger than the Earth. The biggest star we know, VY Canis Majoris, is more than 1,000 times bigger than the sun or over one million times bigger than our Earth. See CREATION, page 8

Who needs feminism?
Today, if one was to hear the word “feminism”, one would probably imagine noisy rallies of angry women and Rosie the Riveter proudly flexing her powerful muscles, all complete with a neatly organized time frame of late 1800s to the 1960s, locked away expediently in a steel chest marked “Trials of the Past”. One would probably then feel relief that the key to said chest is buried deep in the garden of the convenient progression of basic human rights, and resentment toward anyone who should try to redeem the key and reopen the times of such conflict, such discomfort. After all, it’s 2014. Justice has been served. Women can cast a ballot and wear pants, so we’re good! Right? Unfortunately, wrong. Feminism is a necessary movement for freedom and equality for women, and one that has sadly slipped into shallow stereotypes and misconceptions with the passage of time. So, what is feminism, really? What are these stereotypes and misconceptions? As Wikipedia states, “Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing and defending equal political, economical and social rights for women.” While this is very true, I have my own definition. Feminism, to me, is a movement for freedom. Freedom for women to do whatever they want, be it walk on the moon or grow long, hairy armpits. Sadly, this fight for freedom has been minimized down to a stereotype of a bunch of man-hating, bra-burning crazies seeking to rule the Earth and destroy all males, dancing joyously in their ashes. Nope, it’s much more than that. To me, the ultimate goal of feminism is a world where being a female isn’t a disappointment or an inconvenience or a bad thing at all, where you are free to do whatever you want, even if you’re a woman.
In 1921, women won the right to vote in Canada. With the Roaring Twenties came scandalously dressed women, pushing the boundaries of their expected roles. In 1929, women
were declared “persons” under Canadian law. During the Second World War, women entered the work force as manual labourers, pushing their roles even further. The 1960s brought great progress for women, including the formation and reports of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women. Upon hearing this beautiful progression that women have made in being recognized as people, one might say “How nice. It’s a good thing that’s all over with and we don’t need feminism anymore,” to which I would answer, “If only we didn’t.” In 2011, Statistics Canada found that women are 11 times more likely than men to be victims of sexual offences. In a study called “Self-reported Victimizations: 1999, 2004 and 2009”, they also found that only about 10 per cent of all sexual assaults are reported to the police. Also, on average, a woman is killed by her intimate partner every six days. Not only has abuse run rampant in Canada, the gender wage gap still stands strong. In 2009, Statistics Canada stated that based on full-year, full-time earnings, females have earned 72 per cent of what males do since the early 1990s. I don’t know about you, but those numbers don’t look so great to me. It’s 2014, and it’s still not safe for a woman to walk home at night.
It’s 2014, and 90 per cent of sexual assaults go unreported. Why? Because women fear being blamed for rape on account of skirt length or alcohol consumption, and because they’ll be told they were “asking for it”. It’s 2014, and women are stuck in abusive relationships, and instead of calling out the abuser, we call the victims weak for staying in these relationships. It’s 2014, and women still aren’t being paid as much as men for doing the same work. It’s 2014, and 90 per cent or more of anorexia cases are female, because young girls are fed unreachable beauty standards from birth, and raised on the idea that their worth depends on whether they’re a size zero or not. What are we going to do about it? Write it off as “women’s issues”, or do something? I hate to tell you this, but if you chose the latter, you’re a feminist, like it or not. So, maybe there is something to this hype of “equal human rights”? Maybe it’s understandable that women get a little angry at a society where victimblaming is the norm, where abuse is OK, where wages are still not completely equal and where they’re told their appearance is more important than their brains. No, the need for feminism did not end when women got the vote, or when they were officially declared persons. As long as these injustices still persist, so will the need for feminism. We look upon the past, and are thankful for all those women who made change. To us, the lack of rights “back then” seems outlandish. So it’s up to us to make a change today, and have future women look back and be shocked at “how things were back then”. Feminism, although locked behind silly stereotypes, is a movement that has done amazing things in the past, and is necessary today to continue the progress towards justice for women. Creation
ation. Evening stands for darkness, and darkness is nothing, just absence of light. There was nothing of what God was going to create. Morning stands for a new time, a new day, a ready creation. If evening and morning is taken literally, how come nothing was done in the day? Consider all that was created on the sixth day, including Adam, who named all the animals, then got lonely and lost a rib for the creation of Eve, and then the creation of the Garden of Eden. It would have taken
Adam more than a day to name the animals since he had never done anything before and was, like me, computer illiterate. I feel sorry for the fine Christian youth who are fed the story of a 6,000-year-old Earth. Because of that, we lose 75-80 per cent of them when they go to high school and university. Just be strong about creation. Evolution is easily disproved as it is just a laughable hoax. John Jorgensen Creston
From page 7 One-day theorists claim God created several thousands of stars every second in one day, that he only had one part of heaven with the angels for billions of years, and then, all of a sudden, He went on a mad rush, and in six days from evening to morning created the whole universe. “There was evening, there was morning,” was written after each cre-

Pure precepts encourage wholesome actions A

renounce evil. I’m not a terrorist or a murderer.” To avoid this simplistic thinking, at the Creston zendo we express the pure precepts as: I vow to refrain from all actions that cause harm or create attachment, I vow to make effort to live in enlightenment and I vow to benefit all beings. This wording suggests much more subtle activity. With this wording I have to really examine, and be present with my actions. If I am to refrain from actions that are motivated by selfish attachment, I need to pay a lot of attention to what I am thinking, doing and saying. The three pure precepts help us to abandon unwholesome states and develop wholesome ones. Unwholesome states come from greed, hate and delusion. Wholesome states come

from generosity, loving-kindness and wisdom. It is quite simple. Unwholesome actions bring harmful results; wholesome actions bring beneficial results. Zen practice pushes us to experience the reality of interdependence in every moment. We human beings possess a number of characteristics that separate us from the truth of interdependence. We find the most influential of these characteristics in our brains. To our brains, thinking selfishly is a survival skill. Many Zen teachers have told us that in meditation we are living out our innate enlightenment, but when we aren’t meditating, we need the precepts to help us realize enlightenment in everyday activity. When we learn to be mindful of the three pure precepts and practice them, we are less likely to cause dissatisfaction and suffer-
ing in ourselves and others. Ceasing to do harm, doing only good and doing good for others require a noble effort. These precepts are not an intellectual exercise; they are actions that must be performed. Suggested practice: For the next two weeks, before speaking or acting, try to remember to ask yourself if your words or actions are based in selfish motivation or in your intention to cease from harm, do only good and do good for others. Kuya Minogue is resident teacher at the Creston Zen Centre and will be offering classes on the 16 precepts of Soto Zen Buddhism at 7 p.m. Thursday evenings through April 17. A common thought of some folk who have been to someplace, when suggested they go there again, is “Been there, done that.” That doesn’t hold much water when it comes to Kootenay Lake. No day is the same on Kootenay Lake. I find
the scene is always different. Many aspects of our environment are like that. It is never a case of been there, done that. Creeks change, perhaps not so dramatically and obviously as the face of Kootenay Lake. They vary from day to day and week to week. When temperatures drop below freezing, rainfall diminishes, spring runoff quits and when the snowmelt stops, creek beds carry less water or even dry up. It’s harder to get the upstream or McMackin canoe downstream over the shallow rapids.

Gardening Budget good news for Kootenays equipment From page 11 I’ve a few other items hanging on the wall for sale, like professional budding knives, compost thermometers and the like. Also in store are some good quality fertilizers and some neat pottery. The Vietnamese pottery is frost proof, handmade in villages that have specialized in making this pottery for generations. There are some other specialty tools we use in the nursery, like Max tapeners. These are Japanese-made tools that will tie and staple young trees and vines to bamboo poles or wires in a time saving fashion and with no injury to the plants if used correctly. Presently I use some wireless thermometers to report the various greenhouse readings to the main house throughout the day. If I need to one day, I’ll get an Argus system installed. Argus is a greenhouse environment and irrigation software/ hardware company that is actually based out of White Rock. With a system like theirs installed, you can tell what’s happening in any area of your greenhouse and nursery at any time of day, from just about anywhere you happen to be — pretty amazing technology for less than the price of a new car. Other neat equipment I use in the greenhouse includes a Blackmore seeder, which is actually a small vacuum pump attached to a foot pedal and some PVC pipe threaded with needles to pick up 12 seeds at a time. It’s a big timesaver if you are seeding 7,500 seeds a week from New Year’s through Easter. I’m sure there are a lot more than just these items, but that will have to suffice for now! These hardworking men and women deserve this credit for all they do for their respective communities. Unjustified cross-border price discrimination is particularly important for communities like Creston, Fernie and Cranbrook. This legislation is significant, as we must ensure that prices for goods are fair on both sides of the border. Interest free loans for those people who enter a Red Seal trades apprentice program are another higlight. On top of the credits already available this is a great opportunity for those who want to enter the trades. “North America’s premier ABBA tribute band, ABBA Again enrapture[s] the crowd with their eye-catching costumes and flawless renditions of everyone’s favourite ABBA hits,” said the Howe Sounder in the summer of 2007. Established in 2006, this exciting ABBA tribute band features the best in sound and always leave audiences wanting more. ABBA Again will help you relive your memories of the ’70s era with songs like the ever-popular Mamma Mia, through to the lingering sounds of SOS, bouncing back to the disco dancing favorites Dancing Queen, Voulez-Vous and Does Your Mother Know, then the showstopping sounds of Thank You for the Music. “Sound[ing] like the real ABBA … [their] costumes and the choreography are fantastic,” said Exposure Entertainment. Lynn Meyer (as Agnetha Faltskog) grew up to the sweet sounds of ABBA and has been a fan all her life. She has never had to pick up a lyric sheet as she knows all the words to their top hits. And she is also the resident ABBA fanatic. “We think she has an ABBA shrine in her basement,” says www. abbaagain.com. Painter Masters is library’s next living book CRESTON VALLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY Artist Alison Masters had never successfully transformed sketches into studio paintings — that is, until she reworked the sketchbooks completed during a two-month walk in Spain along the Camino de Santiago. Until then, her studio had been the hillsides of Creston where she could harness sun, wind and light to paint local landscapes. With this new project she was faced with creating the essence of the image, referencing only her simple colour and pencil renderings, and memory. The Creston Valley Public Library is pleased to present Alison Masters at its next Living Book event on April 26. Masters will speak about how a secular pilgrimage along one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain moved from physical to artistic, covered 1,100 kilometres, two sketchbooks, dozens of boards and a 45-minute film — and it isn't over yet! Masters paints with acrylics and is now preparing for a spring 2016 show at the Crowsnest Gallery in Blairmore, Alta. The Creston Valley Public Library’s Living Books speaker

The 2015 Ford F150 is a head turner by Ian Harwood

The all-new 2015 Ford F150 turned some heads at the Vancouver International Auto show including mine. Here’s close look at what’s new and different. I think the first thing that impresses is the new styling. The LED back lit headlights are a real stand out and the grille is a three-bar traveling all the way down to the bumper, very nice. Next noteworthy change is the super lightweight military grade aluminum alloy body, weighing almost 318 kgs less than the previous model. We saw glimpses of this with Ford’s concept truck, the Atlas, but did not expect it to become reality so soon. No waste of materials building this new truck. Any unused aluminum during manufacture is reclaimed. When it goes on sale late this year, there will be five trims available: XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch. Chrome appearance packages are available with them all. Mono-

Confessions of a Curber Thank goodness, the stolen vehicle was behind me. Did I feel bad? Yes. Does it make me a bad person for selling a stolen vehicle? Probably. But to outsiders, my life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same old Walt. Oh, if they only knew. I was on a roll. To my disbelief, I’d sold seven cars already. I guess you could say it was a part of me now – I “flip” cars on the side. And, I was branching out – with a truck and camper. The truck had been rebuilt. It was roadworthy again. I even had the inspection records to prove it. And the camper? That was marketing genius. When I put it up for sale, I fibbed. But only a little bit. “Truck for sale. Fixed after fender bender, looks new. Includes camper. It’s been in an accident, so I’m selling both for a low price. Great for family adventures. Call if interested.” Shortly after, I got a call. The man had a distinct, charming accent. He asked me what a “fender bender” was. I explained that it was a small accident. He seemed pleased and asked to meet me the next day. I assumed he was relatively new to the country, so I thought this would be an easy sale. Boy was I wrong! He’d gone to “new immigrant” welcome classes, where they shared information about life in Canada. I think this was where he developed an interest in camping Canadian style. He knew all the right questions to ask. But, I
gave him all the wrong answers. And, I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy for the truck to be safe. He also asked for a vehicle history report. I pulled the CarProof report out. I mean, I had nothing to hide. He asked me what “rebuilt*” meant. I told him that, because of the small accident, the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Oh, but I’d altered the sections detailing the amount of damage. Judging from his English skills, I’m sure he didn’t understand the difference. At least he was trying. He got an “A” for effort. I hope he figures out that the truck and camper would be unsafe on the road when he gets it fully loaded with passengers, fuel and gear. Good thing I have my “no returns” policy! Yes, I know what you’re all thinking. This is the lowest of the low. But you have to understand. I was slightly manic about this whole thing. At this point, I would do anything to make a sale and get myself another wallet full of cash.
*Rebuilt - This status is assigned to “salvage” vehicles after they have been repaired and have passed inspection. Vehicle status alone does not fully describe a vehicle’s mechanical condition or damage history. This applies to RVs, motorcycles, cars and trucks.
“I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy to be safe.”

chromatic sport appearance packages are available with all but the King. Optional power running boards drop down into position only when the doors are opened and remain tight against the body. Some of the safety concerns expressed around driving a pickup are addressed with the use of sensors in the advanced personal safety system that control deployment of the dual stage front airbags, front seat side airbags, and side canopy air bags. Advance-Trac and roll stability control comes standard. MyKey technology allows you to program the ignition keys with reminders to drive at appropriate speeds, limit the volume on audio system, limiting the vehicles top speed, muting the audio system until the front seatbelts are fastened. There are second-row inflatable safety belts, which work like a traditional belt but include a tubular airbag that inflates in the event of a crash and distributes the force of the impact across a wider area of the passenger’s chest A feature called Curve control, automatically provides more aggressive four-wheel braking when the truck is going into a corner too fast. There are host of safety systems. Adaptive cruise control, allows drivers to set a cruising speed and use radar technology to monitor traffic ahead and maintain a safe distance between vehicles. The lane keeping system is designed to help avert unintentional drifting of the vehicle outside the intended driving lane. It automatically detects the left or right-hand road lane markings using a camera mounted between the windshield and interior rear-view mirror. The Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert uses radar hidden in the taillights to detect a vehicle entering a driver’s
blind spot while driving or backing up. Can’t believe I’ve got this far talking about a truck without mentioning power! - One of the engine choices is a new 2.7L EcoBoost engine that has undergone more than 16 million kilometres of testing. The other motors are the new 3.5L V6 EcoBoost that combines the efficiency of twin independent variable camshaft timing, and flex fuel capabilities, a 3.5L EcoBoost engine, which we are familiar with and a 5.0L V8. The trucks equipped with EcoBoost engines will benefit from standard Active Grille Shutters. Active Grille Shutters stay open when extra engine cooling is needed, such as during low-speed stop-and-go driving or while working in hot weather. They automatically close to reduce aerodynamic drag at cruising speed. Fuel economy numbers and prices should be released soon.

Biggest automotive disappointments ever By Rob Sass
Some new cars sneak into the world under the radar with little baggage in the form of expectations (realistic or otherwise). Others are so heavily touted that even the best can sink under the weight of unrealistic pressures. Here are some that, in addition to being under the microscope when introduced, suffered from many glitches. MINIVAN 1990-93 Pontiac Trans Sport: GM perceived an unexploited niche for a minivan with some style, much like the European Renault Espace. The concept car was brilliant, with gullwing doors and a glass roof. Unfortunately, none of these features translated into the production model, whose awkward profile resembled a Black and Decker Dustbuster mini vacuum. The nickname “Dustbuster” stuck, and sales were modest. Buyers found them hard to see out of because of the huge distance between the steering wheel and the windshield. SMALL CAR 1971-77 Chevrolet Vega: The Vega was supposed to be the small car that sent the new wave of Japanese imports back across the Pacific. Instead, it pushed a giant wave of buyers into Toyota and Datsun showrooms. The aluminum engine, which was prone to overheating and oil burning, and the hideously rust-prone bodies were often just the tip of the misery iceberg for Vega owners. Even the air in the tires seemed substandard. LUXURY CAR
1981 Cadillac DeVille V8-6-4: GM struggled to maintain a sense of traditional luxury under the weight of the first Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) regulations. And while the idea of a V-8 engine that turned off cylinders when they weren’t needed had promise that would eventually be realized, the technology of the day wasn’t up to the task and the feeling of the cylinders shutting off and on was perceptible to the point of being nausea-inducing. Cadillac introduced at least 13 new computer chips for the cylinder deactivation control system before giving up. SPORTS CAR 1972-75 Jensen-Healey: The Jensen-Healey was designed to be the successor to the much-loved Austin-Healey 3000, with input from the legendary Donald Healey. Unfortunately, where the earlier car had a lovely and curvaceous style to it, the J-H was perceived as bland and derivative. Also problematic was the new and untested Lotus twin-cam engine. Broken timing belts, oil leaks
Jensen Healy
and low oil pressure issues ensured that warranty claims added up quickly and the Jensen-Healey was gone after just four model years. SUPERCAR 1989-93 Vector W8: Promoted heavily as America’s answer to supercars like the Lamborghini Diablo, the Vector was underfunded, underdeveloped and (some said) amateurishly styled. Tennis star Andre Agassi was an early and unhappy customer when his car failed spectacularly on his first day of ownership, by some accounts setting his garden on fire. Accusations and legal threats flew both ways, and in the end, just 17 cars were built before the whole venture collapsed. The original price was $455,000..

Ramada hosting Mustang birthday roundup SUBMITTED
Mustangs from 1964-2014 will take over the Ramada Hotel’s parking lot when a roundup is held to celebrate the Ford Mustang’s 50th birthday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 19. One of the longest continuously produced sports cars, with close to 10 million built to date, Ford and Mustang developer Lee Iacoca were excited to release their sporty new pony car. With massive advertising and a huge exhibition at the New York World’s Fair, the Mustang made an early debut April 17, 1964. “The new Mustang set sales records that will never be broken, with over 22,000 cars sold the first day,” said event organizer Bill Pfeifer. “Dealers ran out of Mustangs and 60,000 orders were placed that first week.” By the end of the first year, over 68,000 were sold. Priced at around $2,320, people couldn’t get enough of the Mustang, and at the end of 1966, sales showed an amazing 607,568 units sold. “The performance muscle car wars were on and Ford sent some of their new pony cars to an ex-car racer, a Texas chicken farmer named Carroll Shelby,” said Pfeifer. “He transformed the Mustang into a racing thoroughbred called GT-350 and GT-500 Shelbys. These cars are highly valued and sought after by collectors today.” For more information, contact Pfeifer at 250-428-4940 or wpfeifer@ telus.net.
The Mustang in the foreground isn’t the only one Bill Pfeifer owns — there’s one covered up in the background, as well.

Obituaries Martin Kitchener Adey Stuckless November 1, 1925 ~ March 30, 2014 He passed away peacefully at home on March 30, 2014, at the age of 88 years.
Martin Kitchener Adey Stuckless was born on November 1, 1925 in St. John’s Newfoundland. In 1947, Martin joined the Canadian Air Force and served 16 years, retiring as Warrant 2fÀcer W.2.1. He then worked for 12 years at the Lethbridge Agricultural Research Station. “Mart” enjoyed a 63 year marriage with former spouse, Ruth Stuckless, raising four sons: George, Stephen, Geoff and Marty. Mart and Ruth retired to Boswell in the year 1992, after a decade of summer seasons at Mountain Shores… where Mart’s passion for sailing would often take him until dusk on the water (the stormier the better). Mart was predeceased by Ruth Stuckless on April 13, 2008. On December 19, 2009 “Marty” married Sonja Neuman, continuing to enjoy an active life sailing overniting on Kootenay Lake, and camper van traveling. "A Couple More Years" - Waylon Jennings. Martin was a serving member of the Kindersley Masonic Lodge N. 86 of Saskatchewan; member of the Air Force Association of Canada; served on the board of Boswell Community Hall and was a skilled ham radio operator with morse code. He was a man with many interests, skills and accomplishments. Martin is survived by his wife Sonja; four sons; brother John of St. John’s, NÁd and Labrador; Àve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. “Marty of Mountain Shores” will be fondly remembered, kind of heart and of generous nature in assisting others. Cremation chosen. In contemplation, bring your stories for his “Celebration of Life and Living” in tribute to Martin’s full life, Sunday, April 27, 2014 from 1pm-4pm at the Boswell Community Hall ~ PerArdua Ad Astra ~ Thru Adversity to the Stars
The staff is very friendly and courteous, and so creates a wonderful atmosphere. Coming from northern Ontario about two years ago where there are no such facitilites for seniors, we both found a ‘loving family’ atmosphere, and as strangers, we so appreciate it. Please keep up the good work!
A Big Thanks, Guenther &Marianne Schulz

Museum, Real Food, Sasquatch part of mystery CRESTON MUSEUM
It’s the spring of 1954, and everyone is talking about pie! Last fall, Mr. d’Aquino, owner of the Garden Bakery, got into an argument with Mr. Phillips at the Creston Bakery over whose business was selling the most and best pies. It was quite a flap! Of course, it doesn’t help matters that Mrs. Smith, who has won the prize for best lemon pie at the fall fair for many years, works at the Garden Bakery and Mr. Phillips tried to get her to move to the Creston Bakery instead. Even now, months later, all anyone can talk about is Creston’s great pie rivalry. Feelings are getting hurt. Lines are getting drawn. Tensions are getting high. Something dreadful is bound to happen! The townspeople gather for the museum’s annual general meeting, but it seems no one is thinking about the museum. All they can talk about is pie! The guests start with an open house at the Creston Museum. There are a number of new exhibits to see (including a rather shocking one called Unmentionables in the washroom), but what really draws their attention is the number of things that seem a bit out of place: Hints about bad feelings between different people. Whispers about strange behaviour and mysterious activities.

The Mystery in the Museum starts at 3 p.m., with the AGM at 4. (We promise it will be short and fun, and as a reward there will be one important clue at the AGM which will not appear anywhere else!) Dinner, featuring one of Real Food Cafe’s fantastic threecourse special menus, runs from 5-7 p.m., and the Velle Weitman Trio takes over at the Snoring Sasquatch at 7. It all takes place on April 26. There will be enough information at all three events to solve the mystery, so join us for one event or take part in all three. Tickets for the Mystery in the Museum ($10) and the Velle Weitman Trio ($15) will be available at the doors of the venues, but the dinner is available only as part of a three-event package ($45). There are only 50 package tickets available, and they can be purchased at the museum. Call 250-428-9262, email mail@creston.museum.bc.ca or drop in to 219 Devon St. for tickets and information. No matter which events you take part in, be sure to enter your solution to the mystery. Figure out who did it, why and how, and fill in an entry form at any venue at any time during the evening. Everyone with a correct answer will be entered into a draw for prizes. Just make sure you’ve submitted your solution before 7:45 p.m. — because all will be revealed at the Sasquatch around 8.

KES event raises local awareness of racism
KOOTENAY EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
Kootenay Employment Services hosted Community Dialogue: Racism and Cross Cultural Awareness on March 21, thanks to a grant from EmbraceBC. Creston Mayor Ron Toyota signed a proclamation declaring March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination in Creston. Lower Kootenay Band Coun. Anne Jimmie opened the event by reciting the Serenity Prayer in the K’tunaxa language. Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks who contributed financially to the event and welcomed all the participants, stating that discrimination is “hurtful and unnecessary.” KES engaged David Diamond, co-founder of Theatre for Living in Vancouver, to present a forum for dialogue. He started by saying, “It’s not possible to eliminate discrimination. We are exposed to it from birth.” He then proceeded to create a safe environment that encouraged dialogue and led to individual awareness for many of the 75 Creston and area residents and 10 persons from Vancouver to Valemount who attended. There was consensus among participants that more dialogue

around cross-cultural awareness is wanted in Creston. The Lower Kootenay Band has started this process by hosting an aboriginal film series at the Snoring Sasquatch. A movie is shown and then Chief Jason Louie, Angie Louie and other Lower Kootenay
Band members welcome questions from the audience, which leads to educating residents about the First Nations culture. The next film is being presented at the Snoring Sasquatch at 6 p.m. April 14. Admittance is by donation. Sponsorship from Columbia
Basin Trust, the Resource, Education and Consultation Hub, and the BC Centre for Employment Excellence for enabled attendees from outside our area to attend. Employment service providers from around our region attended a session at KES the day before the
main event to discuss best practices in working with diverse cultures. Many stayed to participate in the community dialogue the following day. If you have ideas on how to educate others about your culture, don’t be afraid to take the lead.
