A Sidney woman is headed to the Republic of Congo this month to volunteer her time and medical expertise with the charity Mercy Ships. Peggy Sherwood, 64, is a nurse and

has worked at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital since 1984. She was also a member of the Canadian military and spent many years working as a medical professional in Canada as well as in other nations around the world. Her military job, from which she has since retired, took her to Afghanistan

during the war where she worked in the operating room in the field. “I just think that we are very lucky to live here in North America and to go somewhere like Afghanistan and to see the hopelessness and terrible conditions those people live with, it made me want to do whatever I could to give back,” said Sherwood. SIDNEY —The province has proclaimed B.C. Book Day this month. They also announced an investment of $615,000 in B.C.’s book publishers.

Ground has been turned on a new gas station and convenience store project at the Tsartlip First Nation in Central Saanich, something community members hope will lead to new prosperity. “It’s the dream of my people that have gotten us to this point today to manage wealth, instead of managing poverty,” said Tsartlip band councillor Will Morris. On April 8, Chief Don Tom and other community leaders gathered at the site of the project along Stelly’s X Road, next to the Saanich Fairground, to offer up prayers and songs and to witness the start of something new. Tom, elected Chief in December, said it was the work of his community and its council since 1990 to get the land and set in motion plans for the gas station. “The council has worked hard to seek more prosperity,” he said, “and they have found new economic development opportunities. “It’s a proud moment to

be standing here. This is the legacy of all of (the council’s) hard work.” Previous chief and council, Tom explained, had been working on the project for years, after members of his community fought to obtain the land. “Prior to the land coming back to Tsartlip, others had wanted to use it for other things and that didn’t sit well with our elders. Elders and young people occupied the land and ... made many sacrifices in oder to ensure the land was here for us to use.” Tom said the current council has set the goal of completing the construction 100 days from Tuesday’s groundbreaking. The contractor hired has a mandate to use labour from the Tsartlip community, he said. Once complete, Tom said the gas station will provide up to 12 jobs. “Tsartlip has been working towards economic development for a number of years,” Tom continued. “We have had the campsite and now we have the gas station. We really feel this is our foot

He said the future of aviation, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, will see calls for up to $1.9 trillion in investment — including an estimated 12,000 new aircraft over the next two decades. “It’s an opportunity for Canada and for B.C.,” de Jong said, adding the province’s contribution will help AIAC Pacific co-ordinate and expand industry efforts in this province to get its share of those dollars and the jobs it could create. “Our goal is to align the national aerospace industry across Canada,” said David Curtis, Viking Air’s President and CEO. “We need to get our act together.” Curtis said there are disparate aviation industry associations across the country that should be coming together in the same way

B.C.’s industry leaders have done, to better take advantage of global demand. He said $1 million from the province is a start, a way to get the supply chain growing. Curtis said the challenge at Viking Air has been in finding enough qualified employees. Five years ago, they had 100 people working and today, they employ 600 and have produced approximately $400 million in aircraft and aviation supplies. The aviation industry in B.C., noted de Jong, employs an estimated 10,000 people. Curtis said they spent their own money to create training programs in the region to help maintain staff levels to stay on top of demand. Accessing new global markets, he continued, could see a spike in new jobs. Viking Air recently completed its 50th Twin Otter aircraft and the one on display during Tuesday’s

announcement was destined for a Malaysian regional carrier. Curtis said another 50 of the aircraft have been ordered by various countries around the world and now all they have to do is build them. “I’d love to sell more of our aircraft in Canada,” he said, “but the demand is outside of the country.” Curtis added the provincial investment of tax dollars will require the AIAC Pacific to define its successes within the industry. Jim Quick, President and CEO of the AIAC, said this initiative with the province will help local industry take their share of global aerospace needs. “It’s about jobs, economic prosperity and building a pan-Canadian aerospace industry,” he said. The gas station will be a specific brand which will be announced when the store is officailly opened. “We see this as our first opportunity. Yet having economic development like this can be seen as difficult for some community members when it comes to use of land. “Land is scarce and when we have a growing population, we might not have the land to house people.” Tom said the Tsartlip First Nation is the largest band in the south Island with a population of around 1,100. Life-saving effort on Mercy Ships Continued from page 1

After looking into the work Mercy Ships does, Sherwood decided to get on board with the charity and plan a trip to the Africa Mercy in the Republic of Congo. She will work as an operating room nurse alongside roughly 450 volunteers among upwards of 40 nationalities, each paying their own way to be there, to provide life-saving medical care for some of the world’s most impoverished people. “I am somewhat saddened that I am no longer part of the military but I realize that I still have much more to accomplish in this life. “I find that I have more time to volunteer on missions and I am excited each time a new door opens and there is a new opportunity.” Mercy Ships uses hospital ships to deliver free healthcare services, capacity building and sustainable development to those without access in the developing world. The charity, founded in 1978 by Don and Deyon Stephens, has worked in more than 70 countries providing services valued at more than $1 billion and helping over 2.4 million people in need. Each year Mercy Ships engages more than 1,600 volunteers from all over the world including surgeons, dentists, nurses, healthcare trainers, teachers, cooks, seamen, engineers and agricultural-

that the youth writing contest in the Literary Festival was the catalyst for starting the adult writing contest with the Sidney North Saanich Library Writers Group. “It was because of the overwhelming success and number of submissions the youth contest had that we decided to hold an adult-oriented contest. We already know there is a great number of writers on the Peninsula so we can’t wait to get out hands on the submissions.” Writers are invited to submit their works between April 15 and May 15. Submissions can be anything from fiction to non-fiction, to poetry and graphic novels. Six prizes in total will be awarded, including first prize and honourable mention in the poetry, fiction and non fiction categories, said Hope. Works must be written by an adult (age 19 and over) and be from unpublished or self published authors. Each entrant is allowed a maximum of two submissions (500 word maximum for poetry and 2,000 word maximum for prose). Submissions must the typed (double spacing is encouraged for prose submissions) and accompanied by a cover page that includes the writer’s name, home address, phone number, email address, number of words, piece title and if the piece is to be categorized as poetry, fiction or nonfiction. Pieces may be electronically submitted to ckbleay@shaw.ca and hardcopies may be left at the front desk of the Sidney North Saanich Library. Up, up and away in B.C.

ne of the Saanich Peninsula’s biggest success stories over the past halfdecade has been Viking Air and they stand to benefit from the province’s recent commitment of $5 million to thier industry association. Five years ago, Viking Air had plans to revamp the aging Twin Otter aircraft design and 100 employees with which to do it. Since then, they have ballooned to 600 employees and have built 50 aircraft for a woldwide marketplace. President and CEO David Curtis says the company has another 50 Twin Otters left to build — meaning there’s potential for even more growth on the Peninsula. In Viking Air’s case, they had to go out and work with area post-secondary institutions to create training grounds for new staff. Curtis said they spent a lot of their own money to ensure they had the necessary workforce. While the $1 million announced by Finance Minister Mike de Jong this week (the first installment of the government’s five-year commitment) is a drop in the bucket, the industry hopes to use it as a runway to tap into the estimated $1.9 trillion in aerospace contracts expected over the next 20 years. As a part of the Aerospace Industries Association of Canada Pacific Division (AIAC Pacific), Viking Air and other B.C. companies — many of them at the Victoria International Airport — will be better able to position themselves to earn some of that large pie. This investment and the AIAC Pacific program to expand international trade opportunities, among other goals, has the potential to keep jobs on the Saanich Peninsula and to create new ones. There are millions of dollars being generated in the aviation industry here every year and it happens under our noses — and the flight paths of the aircraft we see coming and going from the airport every day. Any expansion in the aerospace industry in this province can only help to shore up local economic fortunes.

Town must enforce the terms of waterfront lease Now that Sidney’s mayor and council have rightfully decided to discontinue consideration of the redevelopment process, it is time for the Sidney Waterfront Partnership (SWP) to take action and clean up the buildings and associated landscape. Not only will this make the area far more esthetically pleasing, but should also assist SWP attract tenants. Under the lease between SWP and the Town of Sidney, SWP is required to “…operate, manage and maintain the buildings … in accordance with the highest and best standards of similar developments in the Town of Sidney.” Clearly this sets a high standard regarding the maintenance and operation of these buildings. Certainly the exterior of these buildings have been let to

deteriorate and it is now time for SWP to correct this. SWP has said it will now be seeking tenants for the vacant spaces; it would seem good business practice to at least clean up and provide a fresh coat of paint. But, in the event SWP is not prepared to do so forthwith, then I trust the town council, as the guardian of this important town asset, will enforce the terms of the lease to the fullest. We watch with interested eyes, as this is one of the ways of measuring a business’ true commitment to the community. John W. Savage Sidney

When is a cemetery not a cemetery? I would like to thank my MLA Gary Holman for his question to Minister Steve Thomson on April 7 about Grace Islet on Salt Spring Island. The Islet is a Coast Salish cemetery. The site is not accidentally a burial site; it is the equivalent to the Ross Bay Cemetery. Despite its status being known for a long time, it was zoned and permitted for residential development. Mr. Holman asked Minister Thomson if he would protect the

Thomson responded, “All of that process was undertaken and reviewed, and the development and the process is consistent with the application of the archaeological and the Heritage Conservation Act.” Then, Holman asked Minister Thomson if he would halt development. Thomson responded, “We have followed the process. The permits were reviewed by the archaeological branch. Permits were issued to allow development to proceed, but they were issued in a way that ensured the protection of the First Nations heritage resources on that site.” You can’t protect First Nations heritage resources by building a house on top them. Minister Thomson defends a process that is offensive and seriously flawed. This property has no business being zoned for residential. Minister Thomson please use your power to make this situation right. Please protect First Nations burial sites as cemeteries and undertake a review of regulations to protect other similar sites. The auditory system can be divided into three parts: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The outer ear consists of the pinna (the part of the ear that is visible) and the ear canal. The pinna helps to amplify sound by funnelling it towards the ear canal. The middle ear begins at the tympanic membrane, more commonly known as the ear drum. Sound vibrations are transferred from the ear drum to the three bones of the middle ear – the malleus, incus and stapes which are aligned in a chain. This chain is attached to the entrance of the inner ear. The inner ear includes the cochlea – which is a fluid-filled, snail-shaped organ – and the auditory nerve. The back and forth movement of the middle-ear bones creates pressure waves that travel through the fluid of the cochlea. Inside the cochlea there are two kinds of hair cells, the inner hair cells send impulses via the auditory nerve to our brain that we interpret as sound and the outer hair cells help to fine tune our ability to hear subtle differences in speech sounds. The hearing pathway is very complex but also very fascinating!

A busy core of volunteers with the Friends of Dominion Brook Park Society are getting ready to hit a section of the park commonly known as The Ravine. And they are going to need a little help. Joan Gibb, one of the society founders and a retired facilities manager at the Centre for Plant Health in North Saanich, says they hope to generate more interest in the park and in their plans to fit it up. While not necessarily a group for seniors only, Gibb said volunteers meet at the park on Wednesday mornings for work parties. “The more the merrier,” Gibb said during a tour of Dominion Brook Park. The grounds were once part of the experimental farm (now Centre for Plant Health) that grew along the hillside in 1912-1913. What is now an 11-acre public park, run by the society with

the help of the federal government and District of North Saanich, requires volunteers to help plan upgrades and carry them out. “The Ravine is a big project,” Gibb said. “I’m told it was quite spectacular back in the 1920s.” The Society raised the money for a three-phase project in The Ravine. Already completed are the first two steps — clearing parts of the area, creating a landscape plan, assessing the habitat and preparing a tender package for the job. Phase three is the actual work and Gibb said they plan to start in late summer when they can work around the stream running through The Ravine. Thanks to ongoing donations of money and labour, Gibb said the work has been made possible but will still require more volunteers. Please see: Park popularity on the rise, page 11

Fare changes at the Mill Bay ferry BRENTWOOD BAY — Seniors travelling Monday through Thursday on the Brentwood Mill Bay ferry will be able to purchase special half-fare tickets, according to Ian Cameron, Chair of the Brentwood Mill Bay Ferry Advisory Committee. “Seniors were able to ride B.C. Ferries free of charge,” Cameron said, “But as of April 1 they will have to pay half the regular fare for those 12

years or older, which on the Brentwood Mill Bay run is $7.20, meaning seniors would have to pay $3.60. However, prepaid tickets are available for that route, at $4.50 each for anyone 12 or older. “This is a project we feel is quite necessary,” Gibb said, adding she is on the hunt for any historical photos of the park and The Ravine when it was in full bloom. The area itself was once full of rhododendrons and many still remain. Other rhodos in the park are blooming now and Gibb said it will continue all spring and into early summer. Dominion Brook Park, located on East Saanich Road next to the Centre for Plant Health and across from the Panorama Recreation Centre, is welcoming more and more visitors, Gibb said. As a result, the park is becoming a victim of its own success. Gibb explained there are portions of the park worn down by footfalls from an increasing number of visitors each year. She said it’s not a bad thing, but it keeps society volunteers busy making sure the park stays healthy. The two base engines available are a solid 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5 version, both of which are likely adequate for commuter use. I headed straight for Highway One and it positively purred along the long, clear stretches open to the daytime driver. Great acceleration in take-off and passing with limited lean and sway when cornering at speed. Back in urban madness, it offered a good view of fast encroaching vehicles from side streets and the rear. I mention this because I expected the sleek window profiles might hinder views, especially to the rear. Hence, it was also not as much of a beast to park at the supermarket as I had feared. Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek. The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports. Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/ highway). That said,I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. That caution should not stop you from taking one for a spin. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Drive In an era of cars that almost drive themselves, the Fiesta ST is a throwback to a time when the driver felt connected to the machine. The suspension is much

firmer than the regular Fiesta, almost harsh over bumpy roads but the feedback to the driver through the tight steering ratio, firm chassis and the grippy Recaro seats is superb. The turbocharged, direct injection 1,6L Ecoboost engine pumps out 197hp. It’s only sold with a super-slick manual transmission that shifts with no effort at all and the clutch is precise. In such a small car, this engine lets the driver do pretty much anything at will. Want to pass on the highway? No problem. Want to scoot away from a traffic light? No effort at all. This really is a car that

does everything very well, including getting good fuel economy when the throttle is used lightly: using only 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. Verdict At $24,999, the price might seem a bit steep for a subcompact car but this little machine comes almost fully loaded for that price. The options available are not “must have” items so the price can be kept in check. This Fiesta ST is a gem in the subcompact class, delivering great economy, fabulous interior and plenty of smiles. Confessions of a Curber Thank goodness, the stolen vehicle was behind me. Did I feel bad? Yes. Does it make me a bad person for selling a stolen vehicle? Probably. But to outsiders, my life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same old Walt. Oh, if they only knew. I was on a roll. To my disbelief, I’d sold seven cars already. I guess you could say it was a part of me now – I “flip” cars on the side. And, I was branching out – with a truck and camper. The truck had been rebuilt. It was roadworthy again. I even had the inspection records to prove it. And the camper? That was marketing genius. When I put it up for sale, I fibbed. But only a little bit. “Truck for sale. Fixed after fender bender, looks new. Includes camper. It’s been in an accident, so I’m selling both for a low price. Great for family adventures. Call if interested.” Shortly after, I got a call. The man had a distinct, charming accent. He asked me what a “fender bender” was. I explained that it was a small accident. He seemed pleased and asked to meet me the next day. I assumed he was relatively new to the country, so I thought this would be an easy sale. Boy was I wrong! He’d gone to “new immigrant” welcome classes, where they shared information about life in Canada. I think this was where he developed an interest in camping Canadian style. He knew all the right questions to ask. But, I

gave him all the wrong answers. And, I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy for the truck to be safe. He also asked for a vehicle history report. I pulled the CarProof report out. I mean, I had nothing to hide. He asked me what “rebuilt*” meant. I told him that, because of the small accident, the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Oh, but I’d altered the sections detailing the amount of damage. Judging from his English skills, I’m sure he didn’t understand the difference. At least he was trying. He got an “A” for effort. I hope he figures out that the truck and camper would be unsafe on the road when he gets it fully loaded with passengers, fuel and gear. Good thing I have my “no returns” policy! Yes, I know what you’re all thinking. This is the lowest of the low. But you have to understand. I was slightly manic about this whole thing. At this point, I would do anything to make a sale and get myself another wallet full of cash.

Ford has done an excellent job of using its worldwide expertise to bring some very practical, yet fun to drive, small cars to North America. Using Europeans to build the Ford Focus and Fiesta for a worldwide market enabled the manufacturer to bring these superb handling cars virtually unchanged to our shores. On top of that, Ford is also selling their sportiest ST versions of both these cars. The Focus ST was introduced last year and this year we get the Fiesta ST “hot hatch.” I’ve been a huge fan of the Fiesta. In fact, I prefer it to the bigger Focus. It is a perfect city runabout with go-kart-like handling and a stylish little package. Looks For 2014, all Fiesta models get a minor facelift with a new front grille and headlights. The ST is easy to spot because of the black honeycomb grille with an ST badge, bigger alloy wheels, a rear spoiler hanging over the rear window, a bigger rear air diffuser with twin exhaust tips and blacked out trim around the windows. The ST looks like it means business. There are two exterior options that might be worth the money. Upgraded paint colours like ‘Molten Orange’ or ‘Green Envy Metallic’ cost $400 and the smoked grey wheels with red brake calipers cost $500 more. The base ST at $24,999 comes very well equipped and is ready to cause some trouble. Inside The first thing that pops right out on the ST interior are the two heavily bolstered Recaro sports seats. These are not meant for big people; you just won’t fit. They are snug and supportive but lack some simple, yet important adjustments. The front of the seat sits much higher than the back so your backside is very low with your knees pointing up. This produces a sporty feel initially but the lack of adjustment prevents the driver from being able to stretch their legs. The dash is updated to include a MyFord Touch screen for radio, phone, navigation and climate functions. The screen is rather small and far from the driver, which makes accessing the small, virtual buttons on the screen a challenge. The ST comes standard with very powerful front seat heaters, automatic climate control, a fat leather steering wheel

Four-time World Rally Champion, Tommi Mäkinen, is behind the wheel of the 2015 Subaru WRX STI at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in the middle of nowhere, California. I’m riding shotgun along with two others in the back. The ease and effortlessness in which he wrangles the 305 turbocharged horses of the Subaru via the six-speed manual gearbox is really no surprise. After all, he’s not a champion because he looks good doing it. So, if the pro can make it look and feel as perfect as

a summer’s day, I should be able to as well, right? I slip into the captain’s chair of the STI – without Tommi in the car, thank goodness – and take to the 3.1-mile track. Prior to the hot laps, I had driven the outgoing 2014 Subaru STI on the same course. I’d be back-to-back testing these all-wheel drive machines to see how the engineering prowess has, yet again, continued to make a vehicle with a cultlike following even better. mance, that wasn’t my goal. The goal was to experience first-hand how docile yet potent Subaru’s famed sedan took to the high speeds and corners of the club track. I had no desire to hand the keys over to my colleagues as they eagerly anticipated their time in the Rally Blue beauty. It would be sacrilege if I didn’t insert some technical jargon into the reasoning why the STI scored big points on the road test. Without getting too deep into the engineering, here are the top three take-home points of this incredible vehicle. One: the increased use of high-strength steel makes for a stiffer and stronger body, and decreases its tendency to twist and bend in corners. The result? A more predictable handling sedan that isn’t easily irked and stays firmly planted to the ground. Furthermore, the 2015 STI achieves 16 per cent less body roll than before. Two: You have the practicality of added dimensions. There is 25 mm added to wheelbase, there is 900 mm more legroom in back and you get 20L more cargo space (from 320L to 340L.) Three: The Base WRX and STI don’t have a rear spoiler. The Sport and Sport-tech WRX has a trunk lip spoiler and the corresponding STI trims have the “table for six” or very large spoiler. Perhaps it’s also sacrilege to not put the emphasis of this review on the design and engineering of this new generation of STI. After all,

Spring car care special

Preventative mainentance extends lifespan As the economy begins to rebound, a good percentage of motorists have resolved to keep their vehicles on the road longer in an effort to stretch their automobile dollars. That’s a sound resolution, and one that is not necessarily difficult to accomplish. Contrary to popular belief, cars are built to last, and it’s often a driver’s poor habits that reduce a car’s life expectancy. Drivers can lengthen a vehicle’s lifespan by employing preventive maintenance that should keep a car running strong for years to come. Air filter When examining the vehicle’s air filter (check the vehicle manual for location), look for dirt or dust buildup. If the filter is filthy, simply replace it. Auto parts stores sell air filters, and most drivers shouldn’t have trouble replacing a filter by themselves. A dirty air filter can negatively effect fuel economy and make it seem as though a vehicle is constantly going uphill in a stiff wind. When a dirty air filter is replaced, drivers will notice an instant impact in

how the car drives and are likely to save a few dollars at the filling station as well. Belts and hoses Issues with belts or hoses are often recognizable to the naked eye, regardless of a driver’s automotive skill. A hose in poor condition can appear bulging or brittle, and should not feel too soft or too hard. If a hose exhibits any of these symptoms, replace it. A belt that’s worn or frayed should also be replaced. Brake fluid One of the more expensive repair jobs on a vehicle is to replace the brakes. Brakes will need to be replaced over the course of a vehicle’s lifespan, but drivers should routinely check the vehicle’s brake fluid. Without sufficient brake fluid, the brakes’ lifespan decreases dramatically. Checking the brake fluid is easy; look in the owner’s manual to find the brake fluid reservoir and remove the lid). The reservoir will likely have instructions on the inside advising how much brake fluid should be added. If the fluid is below the line of demarcation,

add fluid up to that line. But be careful not to overfill. Check the brake fluid levels on a monthly basis. Motor oil Oil change guidelines have changed dramatically thanks to better cars and more reliable motor oils. But it still helps to check motor oil levels after every fill up. If motor oil levels are low, add more oil. If oil is significantly low after each fill up, consult a mechanic just to be safe. Exhaust Once a year, be it at a routine tune up or should

repair work be necessary, ask your mechanic to check the vehicle’s emissions. Failing an emissions test might be against the law, and a failed test could be indicative of a larger problem. In addition, inspect the muffler and exhaust pipe for holes, particularly after winter, when debris from snow trucks may do significant damage. Replace any damaged or rusted parts. Power steering Power steering fluid should also be inspected on a monthly basis. When checking power steering

fluid, also inspect the pump for any leaks. Tires Keeping tires properly inflated pays numerous dividends. Properly inflated tires make it easier for the

engine to operate, lowering fuel costs while also decreasing wear and tear on the engine. The owner’s manual should list a recommended tire pressure, and the local filling station likely

has an air pump. Maintaining tires also involves checking for wear and tear. Uneven wear could indicate the tires are misaligned. Discuss this with your mechanic. Transmission fluid When checking transmission fluid, do so while the car is running and after the engine has warmed up. Always be certain to put the parking brake on when checking transmission fluid. If the vehicle needs transmission fluid, add the recommended fluid but be careful not to overfill. Prolonging a vehicle’s lifespan is not as difficult as it sounds. (MS) — With the return of warm weather comes the return of time spent outdoors. After a winter spent huddled up inside avoiding the cold, the arrival of spring is often welcomed with open arms. The welcome mat for spring often includes a weekend getaway with the family to soak up some spring rays. For those about to embark on a springtime road trip, consider the following money saving tips to ensure your trip is as inexpensive as it is enjoyable. • Bring something for the kids to do in the car. While parents might enjoy hitting the open road and pushing the pedal to the metal, kids often get bored the longer a trip is, and that can lead to frequent and costly pitstops to help quell that boredom. Parents can prepare for that inevitable boredom and avoid such stopovers by bringing some entertainment along for the kids. Portable DVD players are relatively inexpensive and can keep kids occupied on long trips. For those renting a vehicle for their trip, inquire at the rental agency as to the availability of vehicles with built-in DVD players. Parents can also employ more traditional road trip fare by playing some favourite games from yesteryear. These games include the License Plate Game, I Spy or 20 Questions to make a trip more fun for adults and children alike. • Visit family or friends en route to your destination. Those heading out on an extended weekend getaway can save money on hotels or meals by calling family

and friends and either staying overnight or simply visiting for a meal. Grandma and Grandpa would no doubt appreciate a visit and might even offer to let you stay the night and save the expense of a costly hotel. • Don't get lost. While no one plans on getting lost, it does happen, even in the current day and age when GPS systems and cellphones enable drivers to easily access the Internet and get directions. And getting lost can prove costly if you end up driving around looking for the right way to go. If you don't have a GPS system, print out directions and be sure to bring them along for the trip. Also, when printing out directions ahead of time, look for alternate routes that might save time and, as a result, money. Visit different web sites to see if one offers substantially shorter routes than another. The disparity between recommended driving routes might be greater than you think. • Pre-pack lunches and snacks. Instead of stopping along the way for lunch, pre-pack lunches. This can help save money and also allows parents to plan healthier meals, as many roadside restaurants are fast food joints that kids might love but parents certainly don't. When packing lunches, let the kids pack a few items for themselves. This will make them enjoy the meals more and help them forget about the meals they're not getting from their favorite fast food restaurants.

Change cabin air filter before allergens strike (MS) – The worst is over, we’re thinking. With winter officially behind us, we need only look to warmer days ahead. Not so for those who suffer from seasonal allergies. A short winter season followed by an early spring — as we have experienced lately — may only hasten the onset of allergens and pollen in the air, causing an itchy and runny nose, teary eyes, sneezing and congestion in those who are prone to allergies. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, an organization of allergists, immunologists and related professionals, “Avoiding your allergy triggers is the best way to reduce symptoms.” (aaaai.org.) Limiting outdoor activities on days with high pollen counts, keeping windows closed (at home or in the car) to keep pollen out, and taking a shower after coming indoors, are some of the steps the academy recommends. However, “keeping your car’s windows closed while driving may not be

sufficient if your car’s cabin air filter is clogged,” said Chuck Kerrigan, Director of Marketing for Purolator. Two kinds of cabin filters are available — the particulate cabin filter and the activated charcoal cabin filter. The activated charcoal cabin filter adsorbs most toxic and foul-smelling gases, such as ozone, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide and hydrocarbons, keeping odors out of the car’s cabin. The popularity of home and garden TV shows has been an inspiration for Stephen Foster. Married to an interior designer and keenly interested in home improvement projects, the Greater Victoria Realtor was looking for a edge as he built his fledgling real estate career. With film and television experience under his belt, Foster’s answer has been to meld his various skills together and create a service that gives people a better sense of what a home and its surrounding neighbourhood are all about – before the potential buyer steps foot inside. “Every single house I (have a listing for) gets a video,” he says. Where some agents limit video marketing coverage to their big-ticket, exclusive properties, he takes every property on its own merits and looks for the highlights. “I feel there is value in everybody’s assets,” he says, adding those appealing characteristics can be found all around a home. Using video as a tool to sell homes is not new, but Foster has taken the strategy to a new level, posting the videos on his personal website and creating a YouTube channel that now has more than 500 subscribers. With many potential buyers, even those just curious about what’s on the market or for sale in their neighbourhood, looking online first for details about homes, Foster says, video is the next step to linking busy potential buyers to properties. “I just thought, why not give

people a different impression of a home,” Foster says, adding the fact he is comfortable in front of a camera helps him make the presentations fun and entertaining. “A sale is still about reaching out to people, and that was a way of connecting on a wider scale.” The explosion of YouTube and its links to social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and others has allowed Foster’s service to blossom in the last couple of years. Anyone without a background in film and TV would no doubt find the process of creating individual videos for each listing a time-consuming, labour-intensive activity. But Foster says the process has been worthwhile and provides him with some quality leads. While he watches his advertising budget closely, he says it’s still important to use a multi-pronged approach, using print and other mediums to reach a broad audience.

“Initially I had to focus where I could get as many people as possible,” he says. “With my background, taking people through a home by video was of paramount importance. The impact has been great, and it’s growing as people see how I do my work.” He’s had buyers contact him from Calgary, Edmonton and Saskatchewan who have seen his videos. Realtor Fergus Kyne, a former schoolteacher who’s been selling real estate in Greater Victoria since 1998, also uses video, but in a slightly different, more subjective way. He offers listing reviews in short video segments – often featuring guests who provide ancillary services to the real estate industry – in which he gives his opinion on various aspects of properties currently listed for sale. “I was looking for a different way to attract buyers, and the idea came up to help buyers review listings,

While he finds his forté is still working with people face to face, the video service has offered another way of getting his image out there as someone with expertise in the housing market. With analysis and what-if style TV programs like Trading Spaces, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition and Property Virgins continuing to prove popular, the use of video by Greater Victoria Realtors is likely only going to increase. Given the time involved in producing, some agents will still have to be convinced that it’s worth their while.
