Quesnel hopes to reap benefits of northern economic growth AUTUMN MACDONALD Observer Reporter

Resource expansion is being attributed to the spike in real estate markets across the north and west and the Gold Pan City could feel the ripple effect. The BC Northern Real Estate Board (BCNREB) reported 1,005 sales with a value of $248,635,086 through the Multiple Listing Service (MLS®) in the first quarter of 2014. This compares with 900 sales worth $212,173,760 to the end of March, 2013. As of March 31 there were 3,625 properties of all types available for purchase through the MLS compared to 3,815 at this time last year. “Real estate markets throughout BCNREB’s area continue to show strength, being led by a robust economy in the north and west (largely fueled by resource expansion, especially by LNG),” BCNREB president Ken Laursen said. “The central part of the region continues to show benefits from steady growth, while the southern part of the region continues to offer great affordability.” The Gold Pan’s neighbours, both to the north and south, saw growth (see stats below), whereas Quesnel’s first three months of 2014 witnessed a decrease in sales. However, BCNREB director and ReMax realtor William Lacy remains optimistic local markets will benefit from northern expansion. “Prince George and other areas in the north are experiencing increases in their respective markets and overall the north is doing well,” he said. “For last year, taken from the year–end statistics, we were up in activity and overall sales volume, but down in average price per sale, if we look at all categories combined. So we are holding strong and hoping to make a move in the right direction this year.” In the Quesnel area realtors reported 32 (46) sales worth $6.4 million ($12.1 mil-

lion) in the first three months of 2014. In addition to the 14 single family homes that sold, two parcels of vacant land and four homes on acreage have sold this year. There were 225 (243) properties of all types available for purchase through MLS in the Quesnel area as of March 31. In Williams Lake 64 (65) properties have sold so far this year through MLS. The value of these properties was $14.4 million ($14.1). In addition to the 23 single family homes sold, 16 homes on acreage, five manufactured homes in parks and three manufactured homes on land have changed hands in the first quarter. As of March 31 there were 360 (379) properties listed on the MLS in the Williams Lake area. In Prince George 250 (239) properties of all types, worth $62 million ($53.5 million), have changed hands in the first three months of 2014 in the City of Prince George. In the west part of the city the median price of the 53 single family homes that have sold on MLS was $240,000 ($210,500). In the area east of the by-pass, the 35 single family homes that sold had a median value of $202,500 ($182,750). In the northern part of the City, commonly referred to as “the Hart”, 33 single family homes sold with a median price of $304,000 ($259,000). In the southwestern section of the city, 41 homes have sold since January with a median price of $321,000 ($295,500). At the end of March there were 622 (660) properties of all types available on the MLS within city limits. “Quesnel will hopefully feel the ripple effect from the growth in the resource opportunities in the north as people look for a great place to raise their families and live, and we all know Quesnel is such a place,” Lacy said. “With more and more people embracing a fly-in/fly-out style of work, we are looking to welcome those families who want a smaller community that has everything to offer, as well as an affordable lifestyle.”

Smorgasbord of jobs Last week’s Spring Forward Job Fair in Quesnel saw more than 900 people walk through the door. With more than 50 booths to visit, job seekers were able to submit resumes to employers, engage in workshops and learn about training opportunities in Quesnel and Prince George. Many people came to the job fair with resumes in hand, while others were exploring options or using the day as a networking opportunity. Former Canfor employees were amongst some of the first to come in, but the job fair was open to the whole community with a large range of sectors represented. Employers reported accept-

ing as many as 30 resumes from prospective employees. Several reported that they would likely hire candidates they met at the Job Fair. “We were very pleased with how the day came together,” says Amy Reid, Economic Development Officer, “It is encouraging to see the number of Quesnel-based jobs that are out there.” The Spring Forward Job Fair was funded by the Province of British Columbia in partnership with the City of Quesnel, Community Futures and School District 28 and facilitated by Quesnel Community and Economic Development Corporation.

Public urged to exercise caution Q-City Page in spring burning activities

A feature highlighting meetings, proposals and events important to Quesnel residents.

The Cariboo Fire Centre is encouraging the public to exercise caution when doing any outdoor burning this spring. Open burning restrictions will be in place later this spring, so now is a good time for residents to clean up their yards. As the snow melts, dried grass from last summer gets uncovered and that material can be highly flammable. Almost all wildfires that start at this time of year are human-caused and are therefore preventable. Homeowners and industry personnel are encouraged to visit the Wildfire Management Branch website www.bcwildfire.ca/ Prevention, consult the B.C. FireSmart manual and take the following precautions: • Ensure that enough people, water and tools are on hand to control the fire and prevent it from escaping. • Do not burn during windy conditions. Weather conditions can change quickly and the wind may carry embers to other combustible material and start new fires.

• Create a fireguard at least one metre around the planned fire site by clearing away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material. • If you are planning a large burn, consider conducting smaller burns around the perimeter beforehand to create a fuel break and help stop the fire from spreading beyond its intended size. Each of these fires should be kept small and must be completely extinguished before starting a new fire. • Never leave a fire unattended and make sure that your fire is completely extinguished and the ashes are cold to the touch before you leave the area. Before conducting a burn, check with your local fire department, municipality and regional district to

check if there are any open burning restrictions or bylaws in effect. If you are planning to do any large-scale industrial burning or conduct a grass burn more than 0.2 hectares (Category 3 fires), you must obtain a burn registration number ahead of time by calling 1-888-797-1717. Always check the venting conditions before conducting an open burn. If venting conditions are rated “Poor” or “Fair”, open burning is restricted. The venting index can be found at: http://www.bcairquality.ca/readings/ ventilation-index.html Up-to-date information on open fire bans can be obtained online at www.bcwildfire.ca or by calling 1 888 3-FOREST. In British Columbia, the Wildfire Act speci-

fies a person’s legal obligations when using fire in or within one kilometre of forest land or grassland. If an outdoor burn escapes and causes a wildfire, the person responsible may be held accountable for damages and fire suppression costs. Anyone found in contravention of an open fire prohibition may be issued a ticket for $345 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 and sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person may be subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 and be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs. Perhaps PQ days are numbered

N

ormally, elections in other provinces are of little interest to B.C. residents. But the Parti Quebecois mused about separatism and campaigned openly on a Charter of Quebec Values that was one of the most discriminatory documents in recent Canadian history. Pauline Marois borrowed a page from Adrian Dix’s unsuccessful campaign in B.C. a year ago. She went off script part-way through the campaign, bringing up separatism after her star candidate Pierre-Karl Peladeau proclaimed the need for independence. It was her “Kinder Morgan” moment, damage she could not repair. Even though some of those who voted against her support separatism, very few want a referendum any time soon. Her lack of focus on jobs and the economy was also a crucial error. Quebec has one of the weakest economies in the country and a poor job creation record. Any talk of separatism causes investors to give it the cold shoulder. Marois seemed unperturbed by all this. The charter would not pass muster when challenged in court, so in the last week of the campaign, Marois stated she would use the notwithstanding clause to ensure it took effect. While some undoubtedly cheered, that was another reminder to many voters just how off course the PQ was. New premier Philippe Couillard has stated Canada is a great country to be part of. At the same time, he plans to vigorously defend the French language. However, he extended an olive branch to other Quebecers in his victory speech, which is a good omen. Couillard has promised to tackle some of the province’s economic issues Meanwhile, the PQ is now leaderless, with Marois having resigned on Monday night. Perhaps its days are numbered. – Black Press

Life as a peacock

I

met my friend’s “crazy Aunt Jane” last week and the first thing I said to her was how much I loved her hair. “Thank you,” she laughed, obviously accustomed to hearing compliments like that. Jane Coryell was visiting from out of town and we didn’t get to exchange many words during our first encounter, but a few days later I was able to pose the question I immediately wanted to ask. “How do people react to your purple hair?” “Oh, they love it,” she said. “They think it’s fun.” I did too. I asked her if it was an ice-breaker and she figured it probably was. “People of all ages are always commenting on it,” she said. “It makes them smile.” The 70-year-old artist from Oakville, Ontario said she’d been dyeing her hair bright colors for decades and enjoyed the attention. I could understand that. Over the years I’ve met so

On A Brighter Note many creative people who have expressed themselves in uncommon ways with their physical appearance and I’ve always admired it. Their individuality and courage to stand out is so appealing, even when their look isn’t something I’d want for myself. In my twenties, I had a co-worker in her thirties who liked to play dress up on a daily basis. We worked in a large government building with thousands of employees and at some point during my first day on the job I noticed her. She was wearing a red leather skirt, a zebra print blouse, black sequined stilettos and a shoulder length blonde wig that I didn’t know was a wig until

To observe someone like Colleen Ostlund, so willing to showcase her eccentricity in such a corporate setting, not caring if people snickered behind her back, was a real eye-opener. I believe it changed me. I had always flown under the radar, afraid to stand out for fear anyone might think I was spreading my feathers like a proud, pompous peacock. Over the years, I stopped worrying about people’s perception of who I was or what I did and I started doing my own thing. I’m not visually colorful like Jane, Colleen or the peacock, but I know I’m unique, just as we all are. I now not only accept the things that make me different, I embrace them. Life’s short, so we might as well celebrate who we are and have some fun while we’re here. If someone doesn’t approve, that’s their business, not ours. Lori Welbourne is a syndicated columnist. the next day when I saw her with long curly red hair and the day after that with a short brown bob. I quickly started looking forward to seeing what she’d wear next. Aside from her beautiful smile, she never seemed to sport the same thing twice. “Crazy Colleen” was how some people referred to her, but like Jane, she wasn’t crazy at all. She was just artistic, theatrical and fearlessly playful and I was instantly attracted to her courage and freedom of expression. I hadn’t seen that before. Not in real life anyway. Attending a small high school back in the ‘80s, everyone seemed to dress the same except for a tiny group of goth kids who scared people away with their black hair, black makeup and black nail polish. The rest of us tended to blend in and not be too different from one another - like most of the cars on the roads and houses on the streets.

Our parks, our trails

Editor: Though winter is hanging on and slowing things down, spring is determinedly putting her plans to work. Nature’s icy artwork decorations are changing daily. Chubby robins and noisy geese have joyously returned. There is much promise of delights to see and new life to grow. Unfortunately, this transition time also reveals much. Wind and bird strewn litter is everywhere. As well, when the snow melts, other refuse becomes evident… Last January, on a beautiful afternoon, a snowshoe around West Fraser Timber Park had me dodging nearly twenty piles of poop. The fun of that day was overshadowed by disgust. Now, as the snow melts, more and more piles are becoming evident. The walking bridge and river trails are not immune as Ceal Tingley can attest. Several suggestions: • Could the city please put out more garbage receptacles to facilitate spring cleaning. • Could trail and park walkers pick up 1 piece of litter on every round to make the task lighter for all. • Could responsible dog owners take extra bags and pick up one extra pile of poop as they enjoy the public areas. • Could the irresponsible dog owners step up and do their duty. Take bags and make sure no sign of your dog’s walk is left behind. Our city parks and trails are a wonderful resource to be enjoyed by all. Let’s all take pride in keeping them clean. Liz-Anne Eyford and other trail users Quesnel

INFORMATION SESSION

In any community, some stand out and in Quesnel Francine Gaetz certainly was one of those people. At the age of one, Francine moved with her family from Ontario to British Columbia where she remained until her death last year. Loving mother to four children and beloved wife of Dennis Gaetz, Francine always found her balance between work, family and commitment to community. Her passions included fishing, hunting, curling and golf and of course adventures with her family. She was an excellent co-pilot to Dennis and was in the process of completing her pilot’s license. However, for the community she was possibly best known for her many projects, organizations and activities to which she was devoted. The many, many hours she gave to Sunrise Rotary including being a founding member, her tireless contributions to the Quesnel B.C. Winter Games and her commitment to Quesnel Community Foundation where she was a task force member in the formation and later a first board member of the QCF. Who doesn’t remember the boundless energy and positive attitude Francine brought to her 10-year involvement as chair of the Rotary Diamond Calcutta fundraiser which raised thousands of dollars for projects in Quesnel? How many people hold dear the memory of Francine flitting all over the community in her delightful duck costume selling duck drop tickets? It brings a smile to many faces just pondering that image. She also devoted many hours and years to 115Curling ThorncliffeClub Park Drive the Quesnel and the Quesnel Docket: 23302 Toronto Ontario Client: 247 - JWT Golf Course M4Hwith 1M1 entertainment and Job Name: Participation Ads volunteer Tel support. 416•696•2853 Production Contact: Lara Vanderheide Francine was a true Quesnel booster and it’s a fitting tribute she has been chosen this year to posthumously receive the Lifetime B:5.8125” Achievement Award from Quesnel’s T:5.8125” Volunteer Citizen of the Year committee.

Through distracted eyes On Monday afternoon, Correlieu Grade 11 students were shocked and embarrassed, but eventually they gained the knowledge of what can happen when poor choices are made behind the wheel. Quesnel Party Program coordinator Dale Carlson acknowledged the Quesnel Community Foundation grant of $1,500 which helped sponsor the Road Safety Day. Partners in the demonstration day included RCMP; ICBC-Road Safety driving examiner; Drive Wise – distracted driver simulator; Correlieu staff and the Prince George PARTY program. A host of activities were on hand to help the students understand the consequences of poor choices, including: the distraction simulator had students attempting to operate a vehicle at unsafe speeds; RCMP allowed students to experience drunk driving by wearing special goggles and trying to sink a basketball; also the RCMP discussed what would happen if you were stopped and had to take a breathalyzer test, walk a straight line (with the goggles on) and, just for fun, see how fast you could run as measured by a speed gun; the distractions walking course where students tried to walk and text on a cell phone while still obeying the signs for pedestrians; ICBC driver examiner was on hand to answer questions about learners and first time drivers. In the morning students listened to ICBC speaker Kevin Brooks. Brooks was a drunk driver who is now a paraplegic. Brooks was speeding, impaired and distracted resulting in the accident that crippled him for life. He has been telling his story with a strong message for teens and listening to their concerns for the past 11 years. Annie Gallant photos

Sisters of the Cross

A special Easter Service at Northstar Church

E

aster is coming up, but long before there were bunnies and chocolate eggs, there was a miraculous, glorious day when the Creator of the Universe took his son, already dead and in the tomb, and raised him to life again. But before there was that amazing life-giving day, there was a terrible, horrible, painful day of suffering we now call Good Friday. For those of us who have seen the movies that depict the arrest, beating and crucifixion of Jesus, we know that he suffered more than we can imagine. We think of his disciples who all fled in fear of their own lives. Have you ever thought much about the women who were there through it all? The Bible tells

Shannon Bell-Wyminga

Cariboo Presbyterian Church us that there were a group of women who accompanied Jesus all through his ministry and took care of his needs and they stuck around until the very end. They were there for it all. Imagine how they felt to see their gentle teacher, son, healer and leader suffer as he did. Confusion, pain, grief, fear. What do we do with all those feelings ourselves?

Good Friday is a chance to remember that our Creator also suffered. We have a God who understands. If you would like to hear that old story from the perspective of those women, on Good Friday there will be a chance to identify with how these sisters of faith experienced the cross. Many churches in Quesnel will be gathering to remember Good Friday together. Part of that will be a drama called the Sisters of the Cross. Sit with these women and hear their stories and how Jesus affected their lives. Hope you can join us at Northstar Church on April 18 at 11 am. Shannon Bell-Wyminga is a pastor with Cariboo Presbyterian Church in Ndazkoh.

Rated P.G. takes Mustache Madness by a (facial) hair JONAS GAGNON Observer Reporter Two minutes left and the score was tied. It was David vs. Goliath; it was the chance for an upset; it was the first time in a long time – it was not meant to be. With two minutes left, the Gold Pain Jammer was in the box. "That last jam killed us," Gold Pain skater Willow (Willowmeana) Eyford said. "Our Jammer caught a penalty so we had no way of scoring points, so they just kept on getting grand slam after grand slam." It was a hard ending for Gold Pan Girls and fans alike, but the game was so closely contested it's hard to see it as a loss. "I think we played a fantastic game," Eyford said. Rewind nearly an hour and you have the short-handed Gold Pain Derby Girls, sanded down to nine skaters after jobs, injuries and new regulations for the team had their way, facing their Cariboo frienemies, Rated P.G. Gold Pain started out on top, pushing ahead of P.G. for the first four jams. But then Gold Pain lost their footing and Rated P.G. rolled back into the game and into the lead. "They got a few grand slams and that was a game changer for sure," Eyford said. By the end of the first half P.G.

W

"Our strategy is really coming together. We're not as frantic on the track as we used to be. I think that's really helping." Gold Pain skater Willlow Eyford

was up 62 to 47 and the Gold Pain Girls were themselves feeling the pain. "We were playing very shorthanded – we didn't even have two full lines – so people from the line that was just out had to stay so we got exhausted really quick," Eyford said. Turning the pain into gold, Quesnel wore away the lead point by bitter point and eventually the Gold Pain Girls were back in contention and then tied. And everything was balanced on that cusp until the penalty, when it all crumbled with grand slam after grand slam going to P.G. for 130 – 105 win for the visitors. Prince George has been a perennial nemesis for Quesnel and one that is not easily beat, so for the girls to have sat on that cusp, all while down five players, was something of a coup for the team. That measured not only by score, but by how the team is no longer relying on brute strength or frantic energy, but on skill and strategy. "Our strategy is really coming together," Eyford said.

"We're not as frantic on the track as we used to be. I think that's really helping." The event itself was equally a win for the Gold Pain Girls, as they brought in a good turnout and a new sponsor in the form of Barkerville Brewing, which is huge according to Eyford as they now have some good, local beer to serve at the bouts.

Also featured in the mid-game break was the Gold Nuggets – the junior Gold Pain team. Not only is the growth of Derby bringing new and better players to the team, but it's bringing in young girls who will grow up playing derby and bring new talent to the team as players come up through the ranks.

The Gold Pain Girls will play two away games, May 10 vs Terrace North Coast Nightmares and May 31 vs Kelowna Derby Dolls, before coming back home to take on the Terrace North Coast Nightmares June 28 and finishing off their season July 18 against the Kamloops Tournament City Wreckers.

Unique Opportunity

Black Press has a very unique opportunity for the right person.

We currently have an opening for a sales person to help us with our paid distribution newspapers across B.C. This position means getting out in the community and talking to subscribers about our newspapers and working to build stronger relationships with existing readers of our newspapers. It also includes finding new subscribers for our newspapers and helping introduce them our award winning host of community newspapers. This is not a year-around position and will run from March to October each year. We offer a spectacular compensation package and bonus incentives. Your own vehicle is required, but we cover all travel expenses. This is really a great opportunity for the right person. It is a different type of job, but definitely has different types of rewards. SCHOOL DISTRICT NO. 28 BOARD OF EDUCATION PUBLIC BUDGET MEETING The Quesnel Board of Education is pleased to offer a public forum on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the School Board Office, 401 North Star Road beginning at 4:00 p.m. for input and discussion regarding the 2014/2015 Annual Budget. Trustees are interested in hearing the Community’s views on the key areas that the School District should focus its resources, as it prepares the 2014/2015 Preliminary Budget. The District is projecting enrolment decline of 76 school-aged students and 90 FTE adult learners. Enrolment decline and increasing cost pressures make the financial decisions very challenging for the Board of Education. This is an opportunity for the Community to contribute their views to budget discussions. District Staff will be sharing demographic and financial information, enrolment projections and comparisons to similar sized Districts. Your comments and feedback are appreciated, we hope to see you there or send comments/suggestions to: budget@sd28.bc.ca For further information contact Sue-Ellen Miller, Superintendent of Schools, CEO (250-992-8802),Teri Stoneman, Secretary-Treasurer (250-992-8802) or Tony Goulet, Chairperson of the Board (250-983-3519).

variable valve timing, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The two base engines available are a solid 2.4-litre four-cylinder and a 2.5 version, both of which are likely adequate for commuter use. I headed straight for Highway One and it positively purred along the long, clear stretches open to the daytime driver. Great acceleration in take-off and passing with limited lean and sway when cornering at speed. Back in urban madness, it offered a good view of fast encroaching vehicles from side streets and the rear. I mention this because I expected the sleek window profiles might hinder views, especially to the rear. Hence, it was also not as much of a beast to park at the supermarket as I had feared. Light steering also assisted in that manouevre. On the urban performance front, the transmission took the annoyance out of stop-go traffic. Have to think it was gulping gas though in smoothing out the urban trek. The Impala with the V6 starts at $32,945 (around $3,000 more than the 4-cylinder-equipped versions) but the test car options, which included rear park assist, rear vision camera, collision and lane departure alerts, premium audio, sunroof, added another $7,000. It will compete with the Dodge Charger and Ford Taurus domestically and a host of imports. Now to my reservations: the fuel economy for the V6 is 11.1/6.9L 100km (city/highway) and while that is not bad for a large car, it’s not the best in its segment. The four-cylinder eco version is impressive at 8.7/5.8L 100km (city/ highway). That said,I don’t think fuel economy will be a deal breaker for most people. My continued reservations really boil down to reliability. It’s a brand new car and we should wait a couple or three years before anointing this car as the best domestic sedan ever. That caution should not stop you from taking one for a spin. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

A Ford Euro car for the Americas ‘‘

This Fiesta ST is a gem in the subcompact class, delivering great economy, fabulous interior and plenty of smiles.

’’

Zack Spencer

Ford has done an excellent job of using its worldwide expertise to bring some very practical, yet fun to drive, small cars to North America. Using Europeans to build the Ford Focus and Fiesta for a worldwide market enabled the manufacturer to bring these superb handling cars virtually unchanged to our shores. On top of that, Ford is also selling their sportiest ST versions of both these cars. The Focus ST was introduced last year and this year we get the Fiesta ST “hot hatch”. I’ve been a huge fan of the Fiesta. In fact, I prefer it to the bigger Focus, it is a perfect city runabout with go-cart like handling and a stylish little package.

Looks For 2014, all Fiesta models get a minor facelift with a new front grille and headlights. The ST is easy to spot because of the black honeycomb grille with an ST badge, bigger alloy wheels, a rear spoiler hanging over the rear window, a bigger rear air diffuser with twin exhaust tips and blacked out trim around the windows. The ST looks like it means business. There are two exterior options that might be worth the money. Upgraded paint colours like ‘Molten Orange’ or ‘Green Envy Metallic’ cost $400 and the smoked grey wheels with red brake calipers cost $500 more. The base ST at $24,999 comes very well equipped and is ready to cause some trouble. Inside The first thing that pops right out on the ST interior are the two heavily bolstered Recaro sports seats. These are not meant for big people, you just won’t fit. They are snug and supportive but lack some simple, yet important adjustments. The front of the seat sits much higher than the back so your backside is very low with your knees pointing up. This produces a sporty feel initially but on longer trips, the lack of adjustment

prevents the driver from being able to stretch their legs. The dash has been updated to include a MyFord Touch screen for radio, phone, navigation and climate functions. The screen is rather small and far away from the driver, which makes accessing the small, virtual buttons on the screen a challenge. However, it does look much better than the older Fiesta dash. The ST comes standard with very powerful front seat heaters, automatic climate control, a fat leather steering wheel with redundant radio controls and a leather covered manual shifter. The back seat has always been tight in the Fiesta; this is perfect for a single person or couple, not the best for a family. Drive In an era of cars that almost drive themselves, the Fiesta ST is a throwback to a timewhen the driver felt connected to the machine. The suspension is much firmer than the regular Fiesta, almost harsh over bumpy roads but the feedback to the driver through the tight steering ratio, firm chassis and the grippy Recaro seats is superb. The turbocharged, direct injection 1,6L Ecoboost engine pumps out 197hp. Only sold

with a super-slick manual transmission that shifts with no effort at all and the clutch is precise. In such a small car, this engine lets the driver do pretty much anything at will. Want to pass on the highway? No problem. Want to scoot away from a traffic light? No effort at all. This really is a car that does everything very well, including getting good fuel economy when the throttle is used lightly: using only 7.8L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. Verdict At $24,999, the price might seem a bit steep for a subcompact car but this little machine comes almost fully loaded for that price. The options available are not “must have” items so the price can be kept in check. This Fiesta ST is a gem in the subcompact class, delivering great economy, fabulous interior and plenty of smiles. The ST just delivers much bigger smiles. Zack.spencer@drivewaybc. ca

The all-new 2015 Ford F150 turned some heads at the Vancouver International Auto show including mine. Here’s close look at what’s new and different. I think the first thing that impresses is the new styling. The LED back lit headlights are a real stand out and the grille is a three-bar traveling all the way down to the

bumper, very nice. Next noteworthy change is the super lightweight military grade aluminum alloy body, weighing almost 318 kgs less than the previous model. We saw glimpses of this with Ford’s concept truck, the Atlas, but did not expect it to become reality so soon. No waste of materials building this new truck. Any unused aluminum during manufacture is reclaimed. When it goes on sale late this year, there will be five trims available: XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch. Chrome appearance packages are available with them all. Monochromatic sport appearance packages are available with all but the King. Optional power running boards drop down into position only when the doors are opened and remain tight against the

Drives-U-Crazy Dip don’t dazzle, buddy! Reader Yvonne Logan thinks there should be a universal hand signal that would alert a following car’s driver that they have left on their high beams. “I’ve tried sticking my hand out the window and waving and even hitting my brake lights three times as some sort of signal,” Logan writes. “Never any luck with that, so I end up just praying that an oncoming car will flash their lights. It’s blinding and obviously dangerous . . . body. Some of the safety concerns expressed around driving a pickup are addressed with the use of sensors in the advanced personal safety system that control deployment of the dual stage front airbags, front seat side airbags, and side canopy air bags. Advance-Trac and roll stability control comes standard. MyKey technology allows you to program the ignition keys with reminders to drive at appropriate speeds, limit the volume on audio system, limiting the vehicles top speed, muting the audio system until the front seatbelts are fastened. There are second-row inflatable safety belts, which work like a traditional belt but include a tubular airbag that inflates in the event of a crash and distributes the force of the impact across a wider area of the passenger’s chest A feature called Curve control, automatically provides more aggressive four-wheel braking when the truck is going into a corner too fast. There are host of safety systems. Adaptive cruise control, allows drivers to set a cruising speed and use radar technology to monitor traffic ahead and maintain a safe distance between vehicles. The lane keeping system is designed to help avert unintentional drifting of the vehicle outside the intended driving lane. It automatically detects the

left or right-hand road lane markings using a camera mounted between the windshield and interior rear-view mirror. The Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert uses radar hidden in the taillights to detect a vehicle entering a driver’s blind spot while driving or backing up. Can’t believe I’ve got this far talking about a truck without mentioning power! - One of the engine choices is a new 2.7L EcoBoost engine that has undergone more than 16 million kilometres of testing. The other motors are the new 3.5L V6 EcoBoost that combines the efficiency of twin independent variable camshaft timing, and flex fuel capabilities, a 3.5L EcoBoost engine, which we are familiar with and a 5.0L V8. The trucks equipped with EcoBoost engines will benefit from standard Active Grille Shutters. Active Grille Shutters stay open when extra engine cooling is needed, such as during lowspeed stop-and-go driving or while working in hot weather. They automatically close to reduce aerodynamic drag at cruising speed. Fuel economy numbers and prices should be released soon. ian.harwood@drivewaybc. ca

The Sport and Sport-tech WRX has a trunk lip spoiler and the corresponding STI trims have the "table for six" or very large spoiler! Perhaps it’s also sacrilege to not put the emphasis of this review on the design and engineering of this new generation of STI. After all,

it has been reimagined on both the inside and out. But anyone who knows the vehicle is aware that it is in a class of its own, with few competitors that can come close to the emotional appeal that this sedan brings to the market. And anyone not familiar with it should be aware that, despite its 2.5L turbocharged engine, which produces the aforementioned 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque, it is as gracious and powerful as a samurai soldier and his sword. Now, for those who are

looking for similar excitement but not as many ponies, fear not, Subaru has their WRX to captivate you. Also completely redesigned on the inside and out, you have the magic of the Japanese brand’s 2.0L, turbocharged engine that produces 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque and also the choice of a manual or a Sport Lineartronic transmission (a CVT with 8 virtual gears; similar to that found on the new Forester but tailored specifically to the WRX.) It too has the dynamism and pedigree to impress on

the road and track. Performance, good times, outstanding engineering and hot colours equate to the new 2015 Subaru WRX and WRX STI. WRC driver not included. The 2015 WRX has a starting MSRP of $29,995 whereas the WRX STI has a starting MSRP of $37,995. www.subaru.ca Alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Confessions of a Curber Thank goodness, the stolen vehicle was behind me. Did I feel bad? Yes. Does it make me a bad person for selling a stolen vehicle? Probably. But to outsiders, my life hasn’t changed. I’m still the same old Walt. Oh, if they only knew. I was on a roll. To my disbelief, I’d sold seven cars already. I guess you could say it was a part of me now – I “flip” cars on the side. And, I was branching out – with a truck and camper. The truck had been rebuilt. It was roadworthy again. I even had the inspection records to prove it. And the camper? That was marketing genius. When I put it up for sale, I fibbed. But only a little bit. “Truck for sale. Fixed after fender bender, looks new. Includes camper. It’s been in an accident, so I’m selling both for a low price. Great for family adventures. Call if interested.” Shortly after, I got a call. The man had a distinct, charming accent. He asked me what a “fender bender” was. I explained that it was a small accident. He seemed pleased and asked to meet me the next day. I assumed he was relatively new to the country, so I thought this would be an easy sale. Boy was I wrong! He’d gone to “new immigrant” welcome classes, where they shared information about life in Canada. I think this was where he developed an interest in camping Canadian style. He knew all the right questions to ask. But, I

gave him all the wrong answers. And, I didn’t tell him the camper was way too heavy for the truck to be safe. He also asked for a vehicle history report. I pulled the CarProof report out. I mean, I had nothing to hide. He asked me what “rebuilt*” meant. I told him that, because of the small accident, the transmission needed to be rebuilt. Oh, but I’d altered the sections detailing the amount of damage. Judging from his English skills, I’m sure he didn’t understand the difference. At least he was trying. He got an “A” for effort. I hope he figures out that the truck and camper would be unsafe on the road when he gets it fully loaded with passengers, fuel and gear. Good thing I have my “no returns” policy!
