City deer poll done
Residents feelings about our urban ungulates to be revealed May 12 ARNE PETRYSHEN Townsman Staff
Though the results of the Urban Deer Resident Survey won’t be available until the May 12 council meeting, there were a good number of respondents for the City of Cranbrook survey which intends to gauge public opinion on urban deer control. The grand total for survey responses submitted was 1628, both online and in paper form at city hall. Of those, 1,470 were online responses and 158 were hard copies, which required identification and a Cranbrook address to obtain. At the April 7 council meeting, Mayor Wayne Stetski also noted that the City was taking precautions to avoid duplicate submissions and surveys submitted by non-residents online. “There were several enquiries around, ‘How do we make sure that there aren’t multiple applications done, particularly over the computer?’” Stetski explained. “How do we make sure there aren’t people outside of Cranbrook that are filling out the survey and sending it in?”

Regional district supports Key City Theatre replacement
Theatre society, School District 5 appealed to the Regional District of East Kootenay for financial support SALLY MACDONALD Townsman Staff
Key City Theatre Society and School District 5 have appealed to the Regional District of East Kootenay for support in replacing the Cranbrook theatre. Key City Theatre is attached to Mount Baker Sec-
ondary School, which is slated for replacement once provincial funding becomes available. Since it was built in 1991, the Key City Theatre has been operated by the non-profit Key City Theatre Society. Operational funding is provided each year by the City of Cran-
brook and School District 5. Now, the School District and Key City Theatre Society is asking the Regional District of East Kootenay to consider the theatre a regional asset, and support its efforts to secure funding for the replacement. “The Key City Theatre is
an integral part of our entire region,” said Frank Lento, chair of the School District 5 board of trustees, to the regional board on Friday, April 4. “What we’re here for is to extend the partnership to include the regional district. What we would seek is ap-
proval in principle from the regional district to explore all avenues of replacing Key City Theatre, benefitting the entire region, and that the RDEK provide some preliminary support in our exploration of those avenues.”

Family chosen for Habitat home The Berry family will work with volunteers, contractors working on donated time, and donated materials to build a home with an interest-free mortgage in Cranbrook
Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
A family of six will soon be able to move into a brand new home after being selected as the family partner for Cranbrook’s first Habitat for Humanity build. David and Coreena Berry and their four children, Hanna, 11, Alysha, 10, Jordan, 8, and Samantha, 16 months, have been chosen as the successful applicants for the home, which will be built this summer in Slaterville. Started in Georgia in 1976, Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that works alongside those in need to build houses for low-income families. Two years ago, a Cranbrook group began working with West Kootenay Habitat for Humanity to support the first Habitat build in the East Kootenay. The City of Cranbrook donated a piece of land in Slaterville, and different local organizations pitched in financial aid to get the

Representatives of four areas in Division C will be attending. the home. A selection committee comprised of Jill Johnston, Gord Harder and Stu Deeks met with five families in Cranbrook over the past three months before selecting the Berry family for the project.
“It was a thorough and rigorous process,” said Jill Johnston. “The three of us approached the task from divergent points of view and we all agreed on the final recommendation. We believe the application process resulted in the selection of the best family partner for this project. The family were elated when we shared the news of the board’s approval.” The board of directors for Habitat for Humanity West Kootenay approved the family earlier this month. Work on the Slaterville lot has already begun, with project manager Darrell Bohmer of AJC Construction starting site preparation on April 5. Plans are underway to unite Habitat affiliates in Nelson, Castlegar, Grand Forks and the Cranbrook group in one larger organization, Habitat for Humanity Southeast B.C. That would mean more builds in the East Kootenay.

too. If the speaker goes on to a larger stage, an international stage, that speech is one that has a universal message that touches everyone.” The evaluation contest is a separate category. A Toastmasters Speech Evaluation Contest is where there is a test speaker who gives a speech, and those entered in the contest all do an evaluation based on that speech. “Everything in Toastmasters is evaluated,” Rodgers said. “That’s the way the people

Seven judges will be on hand for the event. One of the district’s officers — Darryl Frolek — will serve as chief judge. There will be one winner in the evaluation contest and one in the International Speech contest. Those winners will move forward, in May, to the District 21 conference and contest, which will be in Kelowna. The winner of the District contest goes to the regional contest and from there, if they win, they go on to represent the Region at the International competition in Kuala Lumpur. The public is invited to attend the event, which will take place Saturday, April 12, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the College of the Rockies Lecture Theatre (Room 250).

Cranbrook, Kimberley moms attempt to break world record Bums will be bared on April 26 as moms and babies take part in the Great Cloth Diaper Change
Sally MacDonald Townsman Staff
Local parents will join others around the world later this month in an attempt to break the Guinness world record for the most diapers changed at one time. On Saturday, April 26 at 10:30 a.m., parents and babies are invited to gather at the Cranbrook Family Connections building, next to the skate park, for the Great Cloth Diaper Change. At 11 a.m., each baby will be changed into a fresh, commercially available cloth diaper, at the same time that similar events are going on
at 240 locations in 15 countries around the world. In 2013, the event saw 8,301 babies changed at the same time, setting a new world record. This year, the goal is to break that record. But there’s another goal, said organizer Daleen Bybee. “It’s really about awareness,” said Bybee. “Some families may have never considered cloth diapering and they may think it’s so much work. But we’re just here to show them that it can be fun and teach them whatever they want to know.”
There will be “cloth diapering gurus” on hand to answer questions and explain what
cloth diapering means. “There are so many neat options for cloth diapering, and it is a
good option for families if you can swing it,” said Bybee. Participants will be given a bag of donated goodies to take home, including a pair of baby legs for the first 20 moms. Door prizes will also be available, offering donated items from both local businesses such as Petra Naturally and A Touch of Whimsy, and other companies such as Apple Cheeks and Superior Soap Nuts. As well as the diaper change, there will also be a baby-wearing fashion show during the event. “Lots of families in
the area have questions about baby wearing – which carriers to use and how to do it safely. So this is just a great venue to do a fashion show, and we’ll teach moms about safe baby wearing and what carriers are available locally and which ones are the best options for families,” said Bybee. Bybee, who owns Over The Rainbow Family Services, is organizing the event alongside Megan Lescanec, owner of the Bumble Tree. Families from both Cranbrook and Kimberley are encouraged to attend the event. To meet the world re-
cord criteria, it must be one adult for each child. Participants must bring a fresh, commercially available cloth diaper, and the child must be shorter than 39 inches – less than four years old on average. Parents may want to bring a blanket or change pad to put under the baby during the change as it will be mostly done on the floor. To find out more or to RSVP, you can visit the Bumble Tree on Baker Street in Cranbrook, or find the event on Facebook by searching for “Great Cloth Diaper Change – Cranbrook and Kimberley”.
East Kootenay snowpacks 118 per cent of normal CAROLYN GRANT
Mid-April is the transition point from snow accumulation to the beginning of melting at high elevations. That’s not to say we can’t get accumulation of snow into June in the high alpine, but for the most part, the major accumulation is over. This makes the April Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations’ River Forecast Centre a fairly good guide to how much snow there will be to melt in B.C.’s watersheds this coming freshet. The report, issued on April 8, indicates that there are areas of concern in the province, such as Vancouver Island where the snow pack is only 60 per cent of normal, which could lead to water supply concerns this coming summer, to the Upper Fraser where the snow pack is 136 per cent of normal. The River Forecast Centre considers anything above 120 per cent to be above normal and the East Kootenays is just skirting that with snowpacks at 118 per cent of normal. Last year, at the time of the April report, East Kootenay snowpacks were at 91 per cent of normal. But weather plays a huge part as well and last year, heavy rains in late June led to
severe flooding as the high elevation snow pack came down very quickly. “It is important to note that snow pack is only one element that influences whether flooding occurs during the spring freshet,” the report says. “Of critical importance are how the snow melts and how much, and when, precipitation is received during the snow melt period. Therefore weather during the melt season is the key driver that determines if flooding will occur or not. “Analysis of snow pack should not be considered a forecast of upcoming spring flood conditions; rather it is an assessment of whether or not flooding is more likely to occur. Heavy snow packs lead to an increased likelihood, or risk, of flooding, however flooding can occur during years with normal snow pack and conversely years with heavy snow pack do not always lead to flooding.” Current medium-range forecasts from the North American Ensemble Forecast System indicate a high likelihood of above normal temperatures April 15-22, the report says. This forecast suggests the seasonal transition to snow pack melt will likely occur over the next couple of weeks.

Stetski said that is the role of the city’s information technologies department, which he said was now sifting through the surveys to make sure that there is only one survey per household and to make sure the surveys
that the city looks at are from Cranbrook residents only. He said the department is looking for submissions from the same computer IP address or from outside of the city. The survey was available
for the public to complete from Monday, March 10 to Friday, March 28. The 17-question survey asked residents for input on urban deer and possible future population management strategies. It was intended to assess the effec-
tiveness of the current deer management program and provide council with input on what its future direction should be. The last time the city conducted a public survey on urban deer was September 2010.

BC ambulance changes could see higher cost to city responders A r n e P e t rys h e n Townsman Staff
The City of Burnaby sent a letter to Cranbrook city council giving an update on how changes to BC Ambulance Service (BCAS) Resource Allocation
Plan have affected the city’s emergency response. At the May 7 meeting, council looked over the report. Cranbrook council has already sent a letter supporting a UBCM proposed resolution.
In October 2013, BCAS amended the Resource Allocation Plan, reducing the response level for certain types of calls. “Basically, the summary on this one is that the ambulance service

However, the directors will wait until the summer to discuss providing money for the project. “It’s through the arts that humanity’s efforts are worthwhile,” said Area B Director Heath Slee. “I would support something like this. But it needs a balanced regional approach in terms of money.”

initiated some changes around what you could and could not use a siren on when you’re attending medical emergencies,” Mayor Wayne Stetski said. “The theory behind it is that it would prevent accidents from happening if the ambulances were going slower without sirens and lights to attend medical emergencies. So the City of Burnaby and their fire department analyzed what the impact of that was on first responders, which are paid for by the cities.” Stetski explained that Burnaby studied three month periods before and after the changes, first from Aug. 1, 2013 to Oct. 28, 2013, then post-implementation from Oct. 29, 2013 to Jan. 31, 2014. “First responders ar-

Former finance minister Jim Flaherty dies suddenly at 64 Bruce Cheadle Canadian Press
OTTAWA — A Canadian parliament riven by bitter partisan rancour came together as one amid the shocking news that Jim Flaherty, the impish, Irish former Conservative finance minister, died suddenly Thursday at his Ottawa residence. The man Conservatives liked to call the best finance minister in the world had stepped down from Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s cabinet less than a month ago after more than eight years and 10 federal budgets — the last, in February, effectively balanced after years of recession-fighting stimulus red ink. Harper, accompanied by his sobbing wife Laureen, told an ashen assembly of Conservative MPs and senators that “our colleague, my partner and my friend’’ had passed away, “an unexpected and terrible shock.’’ Moments earlier, the
daily question period in the House of Commons — the scene of a near brawl 24 hours earlier — had been cancelled as teary MPs from all parties crossed the aisles to console one another. In Washington, a meeting of G20 finance ministers was poised to pay tribute to Flaherty, considered a dean among global treasurers after the 2008-09 financial crisis rocked world economies. On Friday, the Commons will suspend regular business and question period so parliamentarians can pay tribute to Flaherty. Flaherty, 64, served as Harper’s only finance minister from the time the Conservatives won office in January 2006 until last month, when he stepped down, saying he would not run in the 2015 election and wanted more time with his family. A statement from his wife Christine Elliott, herself a member of the
JIM FLAHERTY Ontario legislature, and their triplet sons John, Galen and Quinn, all born in 1991, said Flaherty died peacefully. “We appreciate that he was so well supported in his public life by Canadians from coast to coast to coast and by his international colleagues,’’ the statement read. Flaherty had been battling a rare and painful skin disorder for more than a year but insisted after delivering his Feb. 11 budget that he was on the mend. He was considered a congenial, twinkle-eyed
counterweight in cabinet to the equally experienced but sometimes flinty prime minister, someone able to challenge and complement Harper. “An Irish lion is gone,’’ Tony Clement, the Treasury Board president who also served previously with Flaherty in the Ontario legislature, posted on Twitter. Elizabeth May, the Green party leader, summarized the mood in Parliament when she recalled, “I never saw Jim Flaherty engage in a single moment that could be described as mean-spirited. “And to be well-loved in politics after all these years, that’s a tribute to the man.’’ The House of Commons abruptly suspended its sitting before question period began as word of the death spread. Opposition MPs spilled into the Commons foyer looking stunned, many with red-rimmed, tear-filled
eyes. Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair’s voice quivered and he had to squeeze his eyes against tears as he remembered Flaherty “for his pleasant demeanour and strength of character.’’
Speak your Mind, the Kootenay Women’s Show 2014 had an abundance of real Kootenay women gathering at the lovely St. Eugene Golf Resort and Casino pavilion on the St. Mary’s reserve near Cranbrook. This was more than a trade show for local businesses. It was a declaration of independence and a way to raise funds for Abreast in the Rockies dragon boat team. Special guest CBC anchor Wendy Mesley fit well with the “Speak your Mind” theme of this year’s show. She is more than familiar with issues facing women today, including her own highly publicized battle with breast cancer. In January of 2005, she announced that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent two lumpectomies, chemotherapy and radiation, eventually receiving a prognosis of ‘excellent’. Mesley’s experience, along with others going through the same battle, was explored in her documentary ‘Chasing the Cancer Answer’, a hard-hitting commentary on the disease and how it is being treated

and researched in this country and abroad. Participants were encouraged to say or write what was on their mind and capture the moment in the photo booth operated by Wells Photography. A portion of ticket sales went directly to the Abreast in the Rockies dragon boat team, a group that is instrumental in raising awareness and helping the community. This registered charity directly raises funds for breast cancer projects in the East Kootenay region and has donated to an oncology unit room upgrade, the sentinel node purchase (used to locate lymph node involvement) and the recent digital mammography unit campaign.

to be based permanently on their soil out of consideration for Russian anxieties. He really shouldn’t even consider grabbing Ukraine, but he is a man with a very big chip on his shoulder. So what sort of line should the Europeans, the Americans and the Ukrainians be taking with Russia next week? This is about hard power, so appeals to sweet reason are pointless. “Sanctions” are also irrelevant: this has now gone considerably beyond the point where gesture politics has any role to play. The economic and strategic prices that Russia would pay need to be big and they need to be stated clearly. But at the same time, Russia’s own legitimate concerns have to be addressed, and the main one is its fear that Ukraine might some day join NATO. That requires a firm commitment that Ukraine will be strictly neutral, under international guarantee. Russia will also try to get a promise that Ukraine will be “federalised”, but that is none of its business and should be rejected. Ukraine needs lots of money, in a hurry, to stay solvent while it holds an election (on 25 May) and sorts itself out politically. And if all that is done, then maybe Putin will settle for Crimea and put up with the prospect of having to live next door to a neutral but democratic Ukraine. Otherwise, it’s going to get quite ugly. im Wardner’s handbills circulating on the streets of St. Louis went straight to the point: “MONEY FOR ALL! Come to the National Candy Bank this evening in the Laclede Hotel. 5000 lbs. Granulated Sugar to be sold at 5 cents per pound.” The thing was, sugar was selling for 10 cents per pound at the time. A temporary “bank” in a hotel storefront, a counter, a few banners and a whole lot of sugar brought people in droves. Jim made money by selling highly overpriced sticks of candy wrapped in a coupon allowing the purchase of up to fifty pounds of sugar at half price. His calculations proved correct and the money started to pour in, until those in power began demanding serious monetary kickbacks; time to pull up and move out, $1,700 dollars to the good. It was all in a day’s work for Jim Wardner; mining and real estate magnate, entrepreneur, raconteur and occasional showman. From St. Louis to Deadwood to New Orleans, Jim spent the next few years making and losing money through numerous means. In 1883, he joined the gold rush to the Couer d’Alene area, specifically the booming mining camps of Murray and Eagle City, where he undertook a very successful stint of building miles of ditches to carry water to the miners. Jim was doing very well but a chance meeting with a colleague in 1885 led Jim to a spanking new “find.” Following his friend’s directions, Jim travelled miles through the bush to the camp of Noah Kellogg, Con Sullivan and Phil O’Rourke, all hardened prospectors. It seems that a short time previously they made their evening camp near the mouth of a creek some distance away. When they awoke the next morning their jackass, a “diminutive but very cunning and tricky animal,” had wandered off. The trail led a merry chase to a canyon whereupon they found the donkey staring intently at a point in the distance where the sun’s rays reflected a most impressive chute of galena ore. The donkey had discovered what was to become the Bunker Hill and Sullivan Mines, two of the highest paying propositions in the history of the Northwest. Having informed Jim of the situation while happily imbibing of his whiskey, the miners soon went about their work whilst Jim

The miners took his claim with good grace and formed an agreement that made them all – including grubstakers Peck and Cooper, the actual absentee owners of the jackass – wealthy men. Mining communities immediately sprang up throughout the area including Wardner, Idaho, where Jim and his partner Horace Davenport literally cornered the market by buying all the corner lots in the new community and re-selling them at a hefty profit. The town gradually died as the mining wore down but, by then, Jim had moved on to the west coast. There, on behalf of millionaire Nelson Bennett, he did much to create the town of Fairhaven. He organized the Water Works, the Electric Light Co., the Samish Lake Logging & Milling Co. (of which he was president) and the first National Bank (vice-president). He built an expensively expansive residence referred to as “Wardner’s Castle.” which still stands today in Fairhaven, now an historic section of Bellingham, Washington. In 1888, Jim, with time on his hands, announced the formation of the Consolidated Black Cat Co. Ltd and the purchase of a small island in Puget Sound stating he planned to raise black cats for the purpose of skinning them in order to supply a demand in certain parts of Missouri and Arkansas. According to Jim, the hide of a black cat killed in the dark of the moon was much valued for medical reasons. As far-fetched as it sounded, the news travelled far and wide, published in varying accounts in major pa-

It created quite a stir at the time and gave Jim much amusement and one more story to add to his repertoire, a tale that remains an urban legend to the present day. With his family ensconced in Fairhaven, he continued his rambling ways, buying and selling real estate in Kaslo, B.C., in 1892, and then travelling to Cape Town, South Africa where he remained for three years. Returning to Canada in 1895, he brokered the purchase of 842 lots for $176,000 in the new settlement of Rossland, B.C. and then anticipated the coming of the CPR to the East Kootenay by buying a great deal of land near the Kootenay River which he promptly named Wardner, B.C. The town went through a rapid boom period in 1897, when it was thought that the CPR would make its main depot there, but gradually died out when Cranbrook became the destination of

choice. By then, having lost two large, heavily laden riverboats which sank in the Kootenay River on the same day at a significant financial loss, Jim Wardner was in Dawson City attending to the Yukon gold rush as a merchant and mining speculator. It was in Mexico that Jim’s luck finally went bust. While in Sonora, working on behalf of a group of British Columbia businessmen, he contracted an illness. Trapped due to an uprising by the local Yaqui Indians he was unable to seek medical help. When he finally attempted the journey back to British Columbia he only made it as far as El Paso, Texas where, having lived more lives than a clowder of black cats, he died on Mar. 3, 1905, age 59. The Cranbrook Herald stated: “Jim Wardner is dead but if there is any reward in the future for a good heart, good intentions, good acts and a charitable soul, Jim Wardner will reap that reward.”

Ice push Tigers to the brink of elimination Tre vor Cr awley Sports Editor
After scoring three goals in a span of 2:59, it looked like the Medicine Hat Tigers had it in the bag. What a difference one period makes. The Kootenay Ice lit the goal lamp five times in the final 20 minutes of Game Four on Thursday night to come back and win 7-4, pushing their opponents to the brink of playoff elimination with a 3-1 series lead. Game Five goes down on Saturday night in Medicine Hat. “A 3-1 lead, that’s obviously what we wanted,” said Ice forward Luke Philp. “The playoffs, every game is so tight and now the pressure is on them going back into their barn, but we’re going to try our best now to seal it out in their barn and finish it off.” Jaedon Descheneau posted his second playoff hat trick and Philp had a goal and three assists to lead the Ice to victory. Scoring also came from Sam Reinhart, Zach Franko and Kyle O’Connor. Medicine Hat, which led 4-2 after 40 minutes, had goals from Chad Labelle, Dylan Bredo, Miles Koules and Curtis Valk. Mackenzie Skapski started in goal making 14 saves for just over half
the game, but got the hook in the second period after giving up three goals in three minutes. Wyatt Hoflin picked the win with 21 stops in 23 minutes of playing time. Marek Langhamer gave up four goals in 31 shots—three of which came in the third period. He was replaced with Nick Schneider, who surrendered Descheneau’s game-winner and was subsequently benched in favour of the Czech netminder. Each side had a goal after the first period, but the Tabbies went up 4-1 with 3:52 left in the second frame. The very next shift, Philp went out and scored. “That was huge,” said Philp. “They had all the momentum, obviously, so that killed a bit of it, going into the third there giving us more belief in making a comeback, so it was a big goal.” Descheneau agreed. “It’s definitely hard when that happens to you, you deflate a bit,” he said, “but Philper, Pheeser and Cabez went out there and had a big shift for us and got the puck down low and Phil put us back into the game going into the third period.” Descheneau scored his first on the powerplay in the opening period, but Labelle replied six minutes later to even it

Kootenay Ice forward Jaedon Descheneau celebrates his game-winning goal that completed his hat trick in a 7-4 win over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Thursday night at Western Financial Place. up. The floodgates opened after the halfway mark of the middle frame, with Bredo notching a goal with the man-advantage, followed by efforts from Koules and Valk. However, Philp answered right back to make it a two-goal deficit for the final 20 minutes
of the game. The Ice got their comeback rolling after the 3rd period media timeout, with Sam Reinhart redirecting a blast from Valiev. Descheneau notched the game-tying marker, banging in a cross-ice feed from Philp in Tigers territory. That chased Langhamer from the goal and
Schneider went in, but that didn’t stop the Descheneau from completing his hat trick on a breakaway, which gave the Ice a 5-4 lead. All three goals came within 5:38, something that the team knew would come if they stayed patient, said Descheneau. “When you’re given a
chance, make sure you put it in,” he said. “We got our opportunities, Phil made some nice plays, so did Sam and we got lucky enough that they went in and got the win.” Langhamer went back in and soon headed to the bench for the extra attacker, but Franko skated it in for an empty net goal. O’Connor
found another empty cage just before the final buzzer sounded. NOTES: Game Five is in Medicine Hat on Saturday, but Kootenay will host Game Six should it be required on Monday. Tickets for Game Six—if necessary—will go on sale on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the box office.

ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Four years ago, I caught my husband lying and cheating in an emotional affair (he says there was never any sex). He and this same woman had been cheating for 10 years. She is married with grown children. She never told her husband what she did, so she has gotten away with it. We went to counseling, and it seems that my husband is on the straight and narrow. I love him dearly. We’ve been married for 25 years, have three wonderful children and get along wonderfully. The problem is, I am always worried that he is still doing things behind my back with this woman. He swears up and down that he has no contact with her. He claims he caught her lying and doesn’t even want her as a friend. But I know he has forgiven her for lying at least three times before. I honestly do not believe what he tells me, and it is affecting my peace of mind. I have considered moving just to get out of this small community where everyone knows everybody else. I want to punch her every time I run into her. Should I tell my husband how I feel? We have spoken about the past so many times that neither of us wants to bring it up again. He knows how much he hurt me. -- Dazed and Confused Dear Dazed: Trust is difficult to regain, and it is made more complicated when your husband lives near the Other Woman. It is important that your husband be completely transparent in all of his dealings. Can you check his phone or email whenever you worry he is slipping back into old habits? If he hides things from you, you have cause for concern. But otherwise, please try to put your concerns in perspective. And don’t feel squeamish about discussing your worries with your husband, as long as you don’t make accusations that put him on the defensive. If necessary, go back for counseling and work on this. Dear Annie: My cousin’s son recently married. Aside from my cousin’s immediate family, there were only a few family members invited to the wedding. It wasn’t a small wedding. There were at least 200 guests. The problem is the way my cousin and her husband acted toward us. My cousin seemed upset all evening. She was fairly cordial, but acted stressed. Her husband, whom we’ve known for 35 years, did not greet or acknowledge our presence. He was cold and absolutely rude. They sat at our table and had nothing to say. While the bridesmaids gave speeches, they occupied themselves with their cellphones. We felt unwelcome. The bride barely looked our way and didn’t give us a chance to congratulate her, although the groom briefly greeted us. I want to tell my cousin how rude her husband was, but I’m not sure how to approach her. How do we handle this? -- N.J. Dear N.J.: You are making a lot of assumptions about your cousin’s behavior. We think her stress and her husband’s coldness had nothing to do with you. More likely, their behavior was a result of wedding stress (and possibly the bride). And remember that sitting with the groom’s parents is a great honor. If they wanted to insult you, they would have seated you much farther away. Unless they do other things that are deliberately rude, please say nothing. Dear Annie: I read the letter from “Boondoggled in Boise,” whose father refused to let the granddaughter see his coin collection and demanded it be sold through a third party. Why didn’t you suggest that the sons talk to the third party and buy the coins for fair market value? Dad doesn’t need to know his kids are the buyers. He gets to sell the coins the way he wants, and the brothers get to keep them in the family. -- Know About Difficult Relatives Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Drop off your photo and name(s) of subject at the Cranbrook Townsman or Kimberley Bulletin office or email your high-resolution jpeg to production@dailybulletin.ca. Photographs will appear in the order they are received.
Mary was born in Lent, Holland on May 2, 1952. She immigrated to Canada in 1956 and resided in Lethbridge, AB until 1988 before moving with her family to Cranbrook. Mary dedicated her life to her family as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Over the last 12 years Mary has been a Pastoral Care worker for the Catholic Diocese of Nelson working in Native Ministry. Her greatest love was working with the Ktunaxa and Shuswap nations, where she made countless friends. The support she received from the nations in her work was her greatest blessing.

Cross Walking: Showing our love for the city
N
ext Friday, Christians from diff e re n t churches in Cranbrook will join together for the tenth annual Good Friday CrossWalk. It’s a spiritual pilgrimage through the streets of downtown Cranbrook. This is worship in the streets! We pray for our city, its leaders and all who live here. We pray for our nation and for the world. The CrossWalk begins at 10 a.m. on Good Friday at the Clock Tower. From there, we will carry a cross through the downtown core of the city and stop at several locations. At each stop, we read a passage from Scripture and we pray together. Our prayers will embrace the city and its people, leaders and governments around the world, our legal system, our health care system, caregivers of all sorts and those who need to be surrounded with prayer and compassion and grace. We pray for the victims and perpetrators of war and hatred. We pray for all whose lives need to be held up in the light of God’s love. We end with prayers for the churches and other faith groups, all who seek to live with peace and compassion in the world. We pray that we might learn to live and work together
with compassion for the good of all people. Why do we do this? We do it as a faithful witness to the grace and compassion of God. We hold up our city in prayer so that God’s love might surround and embrace us all with healing grace. We journey together, bearing witness to Jesus who comes to our world with a different vision of what a whole and healthy life looks like. God’s vision for the world is of a community of compassion and companionship. It’s a world where power resides in service and self–giving love, not in might and coercion. It’s a vision of healing and restoration so that all people may live together in peace with justice. A few weeks ago, I suggested that the cross is about an alternative vision of what life could be like. Jesus didn’t die on the cross primarily so that we could get to heaven. Rather, he was executed by the state because his vision of life was so radically different that he was seen as a threat. In the cross, we see the depth of Jesus’ passion for a world based on a radical equality among all people. We see the power of
God’s love, which holds us up even in the midst of the most painful suffering. In our CrossWalk, in our prayers, we give voice to that vision. We don’t ask God to c o m e crashing into our world to Rev. Yme Woensdregt set everyt h i n g right. Rather, as we pray, we make a fresh commitment to live by the gospel values of com-
GATINEAU, Que. — Suspended senator Patrick Brazeau has been charged with two counts of assault, uttering death threats, cocaine possession and breach of bail conditions. He arrived at the Gatineau, Que., courthouse in handcuffs Thursday morning after police responded to a 4 a.m. domestic violence incident. Gatineau police spokesman Pierre Lanthier said a 39-year-old man was arrested after a 911 phone call. “It was an altercation between a man and a
woman,’’ he said. He said officers who went to the scene found that a violent confrontation had occurred on a patio in front of residence. A woman complained of being assaulted by the 39-year-old. Another man who was inside the house, complained he was assaulted and threatened. A year ago, the Senate ordered Brazeau to pay back almost $50,000 over disputed expense claims. He refused, and the Senate garnished his salary until last November, when he was suspended without pay.
of love and compassion and justice might triumph in our own lives and in the world. God has a deep, abiding and profound love for the world. Our prayers for the city and all its people, for peace and justice, for hope and healing, reflects our longing to participate in God’s passionate love affair with the world. As we journey through the city, we feel the burden of the cross we carry. At the same time, we experience the
people who care for one another and who care for the earth as well. CrossWalking is one way in which we renew our commitment to walk in the way of Jesus. It is a way that leads to a cross, since walking this path faithfully will bring us into conflict with the world and its values. God invites us to be partners in what John Dominic Crossan calls “God’s great cleanup of the world”. We work in partnership with God, so that the gospel values
+
reality of its liberating power. We renew our commitment to the crucified and risen Christ as we commit ourselves to serve Cranbrook in love. Join us on Good Friday, April 18. We begin at the Clock Tower at 10 am. Come journey with us. Come pray with us. Come show your love for Cranbrook. Come carry the cross with us. Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

passion, peace, justice and wholeness. We make a public act of witness that we walk with Jesus, that we share that same vision of a life made whole and new.
