S
erge Vaillancourt coughs, the sudden attack making his blue eyes water. His wife settles a steaming mug of green tea in his hands and he takes a slow sip. He tries to talk, but can’t seem to get the words out so he swallows. His throat works. He takes another sip to soothe his muscles and tries again. “It’s been a bad morning,” he says, his speech slurred and slow. “The worst is, it’s happening more and more.”
The 66-year-old was diagnosed two years ago with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, an incurable disease that destroys the motor neurons that send electric impulses between the muscles and brain. He knows he faces a challenging journey, full of ‘mini deaths’ of things he’ll never be able to experience again – the freedom of roaring down the road on his motorcycle, dressing himself in the morning and eating a homecooked meal. But Serge is determined to find the silver lining. Sure, he can’t clench his fist any longer, but he can still feel the warmth of his wife’s hands, he says. The muscles in his

throat are weakening, making it hard for him to talk, but he can still sing a few lines of a serenade. He now has a feeding tube attached to his stomach, but at least it means he could be alive for his daughter’s wedding. “Even with ALS you can find something to be happy about,” he said. “I’m glad for the life I have and the support that I do. I’m not going to go negative.”

Now, as they sit together in their living room, Serge says the disease is out of his hands. All he can do is cope the best he can and thank his lucky stars he has his wife. Having her gives him reason to live.

Focus on today. Not tomorrow and not what’s coming. It’s the only way Nicky Vaillancourt says she can sleep at night. Two years ago, Nicky’s husband, Serge, was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, an incurable and rapidly progressing neurodegenerative disease that attacks and paralyzes muscles in the body. It started with twitching and muscle loss. Now he spends a lot of his time in a wheelchair. It’s hard enough to watch the person you love die, Nicky says, but caring for him while it happens is the cruelest part of all. She feels the weight of responsibility to keep her husband alive and give him the best quality of life she can, “but when you are seeing the person you love struggle … mentally they are still the same person, they are still all there, but their bodies are basically dying and there’s nothing you can do, it’s absolutely … it’s devastating,” she said, her voice trembling as she holds back tears. “It’s emotionally and physically and mentally draining and it’s difficult because – knock on wood – I am still hoping for a cure but I know what the reality is and it is …overwhelming.”

A $3-million pipe upgrade project is scheduled to take place this summer at the Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre off Hammond Bay Road. At its committee of the whole meeting earlier this month, Regional District of Nanaimo directors voted to award Knappett Industries the $2.13-million construction contract. AECOM will be awarded a $240,000 contract to oversee the project to replace the outfall and primary effluent line, which is reaching the end of its service life and failing in some areas. Other associated costs include tree removal and landscape restoration. The project will be paid for primarily by a $2-million federal gas tax grant while the remaining $1 million will come from general and development cost charge reserves. According to Sean De Pol, regional district manager of wastewater services, the current 91-cen-
timetre diameter steel pipe will be replaced by 142-cm synthetic pipe, with capacity for 160,000 people. The project will include work at Morningside Park and a tennis court near Shores Drive, which will have to be rebuilt, according to De Pol. It will also include a new trail and the replacement of a steel culvert, which he said said will be good for aquatic life. There will be traffic disruptions to Morningside Drive. Scheduling will be finalized once the board gives its final approval later this month, said De Pol. “The requirement will be to essentially tear up that road completely and for a period of time, it will be inaccessible to vehicles, so we’re putting plans in place, first of all for the residents on the other side of where this work is being done to allow them to have access to their properties and then secondly the park ... to minimize the impact that we have to people that want to access that park,” said De Pol. The aim is to have road work in the summer to avoid the extra pressure that would be created by school traffic and to work within a fishery time frame, which De Pol said is by Sept. 15. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Nanaimo police recover stolen bikes The owner of three stolen highend mountain bikes ended his week on a high note after police called to inform him all three bikes had been recovered. The Nanaimo RMCP Street Crimes Unit hit the streets in search of the bikes when their owner reported them stolen on April 8 and handed pictures of the bikes along with their serial numbers and detailed descriptions to police, which helped investigators track down, recover and ultimately hand the
bikes back to their owner Friday morning. “This unit knows who is involved in thefts and they were confident if they knocked on enough doors and shook enough trees they would find the bikes,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman. “Sure enough, their efforts were rewarded [Thursday] night with the recovery of all three.” No charges were laid, but investigators have not ruled out that charges could be recommended.

With $5.4-million budget deficit forecast, Nanaimo school district staff is suggesting axing 44 full-time equivalent positions in its initial 2014-15 budget proposal. Reduction of teacher librarian, custodial, bus driver and carpentry positions are among the strategies under discussion and both Rob Zver, CUPE Local 606 president, and Mike Ball, Nanaimo District Teachers’ Association president, wonder why district administration isn’t part of the cuts. “Administration is not taking a part in the decreasing end of it so it’s not equitable,” said Zver. “They want to take away cleanliness of schools, take away clerical time that has value to it and believe they can do with less of that but in their own upper echelon, that they’re not touchable and that’s deploring – it’s just wrong.” Ball echoed Zver’s sentiments, saying management has gone up 35 per cent since 2001, while student enrolment
has decreased close to 10 per cent and the number of teachers has gone down approximately 20 per cent. He said teacher cuts would be detrimental to learning in one way or another, including those to teacher librarians. “Teacher librarians as cuts really make no sense, I mean they’re the heart of the school,” said Ball. “These are the people that work collaboratively with all other teachers trying to make sure that the educational needs of the students are met.” Ball said not having a teacher librarian will put a lot of pressure on classroom teachers. Jamie Brennan, school district trustee and chairman of the business committee, said he didn’t think there was an appetite to go forward with all the proposed cuts. He also said the board is a long way from finalizing the budget, which is expected to take place April 30. There will be a public meeting tonight at Nanaimo District Secondary School as well as meetings at the district board room on Wednesday (April 16), April 22 and 28. As for the lack of administration cuts, he said he wouldn’t comment on it directly but said he agreed with the observation.
“When you look at the NDTA column and you look at the CUPE column, there are significant numbers of people’s jobs that may be affected and when you look at the administration column it’s empty ... I’m sure the bargaining representatives at the table will press for some sharing of the pain amongst the administrators,” Brennan said. He said the public meeting will give an indication of what people think of the proposal. People could come forward with suggestions and trustees could make motions that support the suggestions. “Everything’s on the table. Everything’s up for consideration in terms of cuts,” Brennan said. “Just because we’ve received that document with those numbers of cuts from staff, that’s very much the staff document. It remains to be seen what the business committee and ultimately the board will approve as a final budget.” The impact of the deficit could be softened by a surplus of $1.5 million and $1 million from last year’s budget, which would lessen the shortfall to about $3 million. The initial proposal includes reduction strategies totalling $6.8 million – $1.4 million more than required.

Police have recommended a charge of assault with a weapon against one man following a weekend fight that broke out in Harewood. Mounties responded to a residence on Carlisle Street Saturday at about midnight when neighbours reported a fight and that one person appeared to have been stabbed and bleeding. Const. The injured man was allegedly one of the two men beating up on a third individual who pulled out a knife in an apparent attempt to stop the assault. Four people in the party, all in their early twenties, were arrested at the scene. Two of them are facing recommended charges of assault and for breaching previous court conditions for consuming alcohol. Police have recommended a charge of assault with a weapon against the man who allegedly pulled the knife. “At this point we’re recommending these charges,” O’Brien said. “It’s up to the courts to decide whether these charges will go through.” One suspect was held in custody to appear in Nanaimo provincial court Monday. The remaining suspects were released on promises to appear in provincial court June 10.

Bike to Work Week might be more than a month away, but that just means there’s more than enough time to pull that old bike out of the garage, pump up the tires and at least start thinking about cycling to work for a few days. The lunchtime kick-off event for Bike to Work Week was held at the Nanaimo Athletic Club on Wednesday when representatives from city council, Nanaimo RCMP Bike Patrol, parks and recreation, Nanaimo Regional General Hospital physiotherapists, Nanaimo Cycling Coalition, and other cycling-affiliated organizations – not to mention a few cyclists – turned out for information on how to get signed up to take part. Highlight of the event was a five-minute challenge among 14 contestants to see who

He has nothing against people who want to continue driving to work, but there should be more opportunities available and better accommodations for people who want to walk or cycle. “When you look at the Nanaimo Transportation Master Plan what they’re saying is, OK, we have this percentage of people cycling now. We want to increase that. What’s the limiting factor?” Boon said. “They know that between 20 and 40 per cent of people are ready to come and cycle, but they just don’t feel it’s comfortable enough. What do we need to do that? Well, we need to build the right infrastructure.” Throughout May there are a number of events promoting cycling including a heritage ride, community rides, bike repair courses, a commuter challenge and more leading up to Bike to Work Week. Primary caregivers face emotional, financial burden From /1
She cries a lot when nobody is around, mourning the loss of things he can no longer do. She gets frustrated and angry when he has a bad day, heading out to the garage just to kick the garbage can. And she gets scared. Some days she questions if she can handle the gradual loss of her husband. She hopes and prays for the strength to cope, she says. It’s a roller coaster of emotions. “You have to try to focus in on the good things and try not to think of all the negative things. It’s a challenge and some days are bad days, some days are depressing and you cry a lot and it’s upsetting. Then the next day ... it’s like that was a blip and we are OK again.” Caregivers face a burden when it comes to care from the emotional to the financial, according to the ALS Society of B.C.
Equipment alone can cost the average patient more than $130,000 and the federal government provides little financial support to those who need to stay at home to care for loved ones. The ALS Society of B.C and ALS Canada are pressuring government to provide better compassionate care benefits. While parents can access 52 weeks of pay to remain at home with new babies, those caring for loved ones with a terminal illness can only get six weeks of support – and not without first proving the person has only six months to live, said Wendy Toyer, executive director of the ALS Society of B.C. “So at the end of life, we are not caring for people like we are in the beginning of life,” she said. The ALS Society of B.C. was created in 1981 and generates more than $2 million a year to provide services like equipment

He holds the plastic for her while she gives it a rinse. It’s a team effort. They smile at each other, while she draws the mixture into a syringe and gently injects it into his stomach. She’s slow and gentle. Too fast and he could throw up. There she says, “at least now you have something in your system.” Feeding her husband through his new feeding tube has been one of the tasks Nicky has taken on since Serge was diagnosed with ALS in 2012. She’s also found herself picking up other things she didn’t do before: handling the family finances, dressing her husband in the morning and searching for recipes

But she knows it won’t be easy. “When I start thinking of what’s coming and the possibilities ... it’s too much. Emotionally, mentally. I can’t deal with it. Some days I just feel like, am I going to be able to cope with it?” she said. “But I will cope with it. I have to cope with it.” It’s a comfort to know the ALS society is there to help, she said. They provide a pool of equipment on loan, from an electric wheelchair to lifts that get him out of bed. But the biggest help is reminding herself to take just one day at a time. Just focus on today. Not tomorrow and not what’s coming.

Disease affects each individual differently From /1
“I’m always like … can’t keep my mind off of you,” he sings, pausing to give her a lopsided smile. “Can’t take my eyes off of you. And then, can’t keep my hands off of you.” It was because he wanted to protect his wife that he didn’t tell her about the diagnosis right away, he says. They had gone through a lot together. Fifteen years ago, he was diagnosed with hepatitis C and cirrhosis of the liver. In 2003, the disease caused a varices bleed, a condition that saw the blood vessels in his throat expand until they burst. His doctor warned if it ever happened, not to exert any energy, lest he bleed to death. So he lay still on the floor as his wife called 911. It saved his life. Two years after the bleed, the cirrhosis reached Stage 4 and he needed a liver transplant. The former equipment operator was skeletal thin at 125 pounds and spent a lot of time sleeping. His family wasn’t sure how long he’d live without the transplant. But on Dec. 29, 2005, after making a wish to a mall Santa for a new liver, he got his organ. It was a story of survival that led him to become a community advocate for the B.C. Transplant Society, sharing his experience and urging people to become organ donors. His life would take yet another turn in January 2012. Serge noticed a change in his muscle tone and made it a New Year’s resolution to get back in shape. It wasn’t long after he started lifting weights that his muscles began to ripple beneath his skin. His wife looked it up on the Internet and saw a link between ALS and persistent muscle twitches, but she pushed the idea aside thinking it was just over-exertion. Serge went searching for answers. By March his doctor referred him to a neurologist on the Lower Mainland. She tested his nerve impulses, and noted his muscle loss. By the second visit, she looked at him and told him she was sorry – it appeared he had ALS. The neurologist referred him to the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Centre in Vancouver for a full MRI to see if he could have anything else. There is no test for ALS. It’s a diagnosis of elimination. The results came back negative. “I didn’t really question it. I just accepted it. I just dealt with it,” Serge said. “It wasn’t something that I knew exactly you know, what it was going to entail, but I did know that it’s supposed to be devastating. That there is no way out.” His wife had a right to know, but there was nothing she could do for him at that point, he said. Her mother was in the hospital battling cancer and it was getting close to Christmas. “There was always one more thing I didn’t want to ruin for

Because no two people experience the disease the same way, the hardest thing seems to be not knowing how quickly it will affect each person, Toyer said. Statistics show people live an average three to five years, but no one can say for sure. Despite the challenges, those who work for the ALS society say after the shock of the diagnosis has worn off, patients with ALS do everything they can to live a full life and give back to others. “You’d think people would be angry and bitter and withdraw but I see the exact opposite. Look at Serge,” Toyer said. “I mean he has ALS and he is going to pass away and yet he has completely dedicated himself to helping others with the disease. It’s extraordinary.” It’s all how you react
It’s surgery day. Serge’s three children are lined up against one side of the ambulatory care unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, blue masks covering their faces. He sits across from them, dressed in a grey sweater that tells passersby he’s in the fight to win against ALS. But being there is another sign the disease is progressing. He must get a feeding tube in his stomach – a decision he grappled with. At some point he won’t be able to swallow and if he doesn’t get the tube installed before his breathing capacity is below 50 per cent, the surgery will be too dangerous. He could starve without it. More than a month ago, he thought the idea sounded unnatural. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to sleep on his side if a tube was in the way. But he also knew it could prolong his life, perhaps long enough to see his son and daughter get
married, and he is willing to go through whatever lengths to hang in there, he said. Matthew Knee, his son from a previous relationship, came down from Campbell River, joining Serge and Nicky’s children, Myles and Ashley, at the hospital. Serge sat across from them in the waiting room, holding Nicky’s hand. When the nurse strode into the hallway, it was more than 30 minutes past the appointment. “I’m looking for Serge,” she said, eyes already zeroed in on her patient. “Oh,” Serge said, his eyes widening as he pointed down the hall. “He just left.” “Cheeky,” she said, as she ushered him toward the prep room. His family crowded around him. His daughter hugged him first. “Love you, Dad,” she said, kissing his cheek. Myles took his turn, then Matthew and his wife. “Get it while you can,” Serge said, with a big grin. “A tube could be in the way soon.” In the span of a few months, Serge has seen a lot of changes. He has gone from driving his truck to travelling by scooter; eating solid foods to getting liquid supplements through a feeding tube. His speech is slurred. He and Nicky recently visited a speech therapist, who gave them an alphabet chart he can eventually point to when he can no longer speak. When he can no longer lift a finger, he can look at the letters to spell words. His wrists are also starting to hurt, making it hard to type. He spends time on the computer, sending out e-mails to raise money for this June’s MidIsland Walk for ALS and pressing government for changes that would see property transfer taxes eliminated for those forced to move because of their disabilities. The changes are frustrating and a challenge, Serge says. He knows what’s coming. Occasionally he talks about the importance of choosing when to die. He remembers one man at an ALS conference in a wheelchair and hooked up to a breathing machine. Once in awhile someone would help clean the phlegm out of his throat. His family shouldn’t have to see him like that. The last thing he wants is to wake up and see his wife in tears because he’s a vegetable she has to care for, he says. But he is also not afraid of the journey ahead. He still hopes for a cure and plans to raise money for the ALS Society of B.C. so others with the disease have access to counselling and loan equipment programs. He likes to say it’s not what you get that matters, but how you react. “I am in my second year. Some people die within the first year. I am still here and I am not letting it keep me from doing what I can to help others,” he said. news@nanaimobulletin.com

Distractions cause crashes Make no mistake: reporters hate going to car wrecks and taking pictures of another injured person being helped by our caring paramedics, firefighters, and police officers. These folks see, first-hand, the carnage of careless, distracted driving – using cellphones, texting, eating and even applying makeup – while at the wheel. That tragic stupidity killed 81 people on B.C.’s roads – 14 on the Island – in 2012, compared to 55 deaths from drunk driving. Even one death, or one collision, by preventable reasons is too many. Animals hopping on to highways, a medical emergency, or maybe even just being a 16-year-old new driver with an ‘N’ in the window and not enough experience behind the wheel – these might be acceptable reasons for vehicle accidents. Otherwise, to be blunt, too often there’s an idiot and a victim involved in a two-vehicle incident. No one is forced to call or text a friend while driving. We suggest, and the RCMP urge, citizens to note licence-plate numbers, then call 911 to report distracted drivers and speeders. We also back B.C.’s drive to jack distracted-driving fines to help save lives and property. Frankly, a $167 fine, and perhaps three demerit points, apparently isn’t enough to stop determined cellphone addicts. Let’s boost fines, especially for repeat offenders. Let’s adopt a recent police idea of confiscating offenders’ vehicles, and their licences if they still don’t get the message. This is a life-and-death issue. Costly too, in police time, insurance claims, and lost lives. Distracted driving, at any speed, is unsafe, selfish and stupid. Is it so hard to pull over to answer that call? I never saw Serge waver in his determination to find the silver lining in his daily struggles and he’d always take time to explain his symptoms and the equipment that helped maintain his quality of life. He’d have me touch his leg to feel the twitching muscles or show me the biPAP machine that helped him breathe at night. It was about giving me education in ALS that I could share with others, but I came away with a much larger lesson in life. I learned it’s not what you get, but how you deal with it that counts; that we should live each day to the fullest and that you don’t need a strong voice to be a strong advocate. Re: Tentative agreement could see passenger rail return to Island, April 3. I have been amazed at the amount of publicity given to the possible return of Via Rail passenger service on Vancouver Island. A small handful of politicians have made this a personal vendetta to stop all progress, because they don’t agree with who is at the helm. These politicians seem to refer to their ‘experts,’ yet who are these experts? Do they have the credentials to challenge the professionals as well as the B.C. Safety Authority, or are they merely disgruntled protesters? To me it seems like they are experts in delaying a process that is very important to Vancouver Island’s future. It’s time we get on board the train. We need to stop listening to these so-called ‘experts,’ and leave it to the professionals.

Sure, a passenger train sounds like a great idea until you ask yourself and elected officials these key questions: Will it be affordable? Who would be utilizing train services? Will the schedule be convenient? Would the railway be utilized by freight trains as well as passenger to be feasible? Do you want coal trains to be running through your city or backyard? The only sustainable option for this corridor in my opinion is an affordable, easy-to-maintain, paved, multi-use, nonmotorized-vehicle trail running from Victoria to Courtenay and possibly beyond. Accessible from airports, B.C. Ferries, and all municipalities, this trail would put Vancouver Island on the eco-tourism map and invite the world to explore beautiful British Columbia and the Island in a unique way.

Re: Recycling scheme doesn’t work for B.C., Opinion, April 3. The planned implementation of the Multi Material B.C. program in May is a boondoggle of a program with no meaningful government oversight. It is not needed in order to improve recycling rates. In fact, based on jurisdictions where this program already runs, this program will curtail recycling rates – not only because it will
put many recycling facilities and programs out of business, but because it will divert some plastics and paper away from recycling. It is no coincidence that these are the ideal materials for incinerators, and that incinerator companies are currently seeking to gain a foothold in British Columbia, including here in Nanaimo. The obvious conclusion is that fewer waste resources will be recovered, more will be burned, and we will

Everybody wants to feel like they are the star,” Bertram said. “It’s hard to break in there and feel the sense of welcome to the club, we’re with you and we’re going to groom you, when really it is like, oh look, there is another dickhead on stage. You gotta have a thick skin and really enjoy feeding off of self-indulgent attention.” Despite having success with television commercials and comedy, Bertram is all too familiar with how difficult it is to get a decent paycheque in the business. “There is just tons and tons of competition. Just trying to stand out and just trying to get gigs and trying to get paid what you’re worth, trying to get the recognition,” he said. “You have to be born with a sense of passion and desire. Making good money doing stand-up is quite difficult to do. I’ve preformed in venues that are just quite undesirable.” Bertram has cracked jokes on stages throughout Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Denmark, Holland, Japan and Australia. Of all the places Bertram has performed, he said London, England was his favourite. “London is really quite up there. There is so much with the sense of humour and the alcoholism mixed with the pub

For teenagers Travis Adams, Hogan Smith and Troy Pawloski, it was pure boredom that brought them together musically. “We were bored and we had nothing else to do,” Adams said. “All of us are huge music fans ... and we’ve all been friends for a quite awhile and we just finally realized that we all liked the same music.” That realization quickly turned into Flipside Cinema, a recently formed alternative-rock band that hails from the Harbour City. On Wednesday (April 16) Flipside Cinema will be performing at Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre alongside Sherry Smith. “It’s going to be

pretty cool,” Adams said about the upcoming gig. “It’s going to be an interesting show because the other band is more folk-blues and we’re alternative rock. So it will mix up the show.” Since forming over a year ago, Flipside Cinema have been continually writing and trying to discover their sound, which has undergone some changes. “We started changing our sound from hard rock into alternative rock,” Adams said. “It’s a really big
mix up. Some songs have got synthesizers and electronic alternative sounds but then we can go into a heavy rock, almost borderline metal sound. It’s kind of interesting.” Adams explained that at this point Flipside Cinema’s lyrical content touches on issues related to being a teenager and the show Twilight Zone. “I am a huge fan of the Twilight Zone and I’ve actually written a few songs that are about the Twilight Zone, and
people who are fans of it will know that by the names of the songs,” Adams said. The Cedar Community Secondary School students are working towards putting out an EP, which they hope to do sometime next year. Adams explained that while they have had no problem finding studio time in the Harbour City, they have had problems coming up with the funds for time. “We got a great guy in Lantzville who gives us time,” Adams said. “It’s actually not hard to find studio time, it’s just hard to get the money for it.” Although Flipside Cinema has yet to play many shows at the various music venues throughout the city, which is due to their age, they said Nanaimo is a supportive community of new music from younger artists. “We’re drawing for a $300 shopping spree to be spent at the show,” said Damaris Oakley, event organizer. “[If] people aren’t there when the draw takes place then that’s OK too because they can go to our website and pick out the ones they like and make arrangements with the artist.” The spring show, which is in its fourth year, will feature art work from 12 studios including Nanaimo based Cheeky Monkey Glassworks and Oakley’s Redroom Artglass Studio. Shows have been held in the fall, but organizers have decided against the idea this year. The Island Glass Art Spring Show and Sale takes place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the conference centre. There’s a lot of confusion out there regarding detoxification. It’s my job to offer my patients a science-based, effective option. There are 3 main phases of detoxification: Phase I DR. KAREN L. Buying a Safer Car
If your panel is out of spaces for new BEN MAZZEI breakers sometimes it is as simple as putting in a sub panel fed from you current panel. Another option would be replacing your existing panel with one that has a larger breaker capacity but has an equivalent amperage rating. Prior to doing this you should have an electrical contractor do a load calculation based on the Canadian Electrical Code. If your electrical requirements are higher than the calculated load you will need to upgrade your service. This will require an upgraded feed from BC Hydro, larger conductors, meter base and panel. Most often a service upgrade is straight forward and can be completed in a day. What is all this about CMHC fees changing? Good Question! So CMHC, GE KRISTA HENLEY & and CG are the three High Ratio SHARON FAUCHON Insurers in Canada. What the public typically refers to as CMHC insurance is actually high ratio insurance and can be from any of these three places. CMHC only has announced rate increases, we suspect that GE and CG aren’t far behind though. The changes will affect anyone who buys a home with less than 20% down payment on or after May 1 2014. They will on average increase 15%, which looks something like this on a $300,000 purchase with the minimum 5% down payment: Old premium $7,837 and New premium $8,977. Please call with any questions.

In B.C. the exemptions for assets that you can keep are set under the Court Order Enforcement Act. There is an exemption for “one motor vehicle” up to a value of $5,000. The wording of the section is quite specific as to allowing only ”one” motor vehicle. Nonetheless, your circumstances are quite unique. While your car would definitely fit within the exemptions, a second motor vehicle (or boat in this circumstance) would not appear to fit in the exemptions, whether motorized or not. Since the intention of the exemptions are to allow a bankrupt to keep some basic form of transportation, I would expect most trustees and the bankruptcy court, if it went that far, would allow your boat as an exempt asset. So the question would become, which asset do you want to claim as exempt, the car or the boat? If the boat was valued at $2,000 for example, I would claim the boat as exempt and then make an arrangement with the trustee to “buy back” the car from the trustee for $600 prior to your discharge from bankruptcy.

What is my home Comparative worth? Market Analysis
If it’s done correctly, a Comparative Market Analysis (CMA) or The Free Home Evaluation TIM WAIT can be the next best thing to an appraisal in approximating the value of a property. The purpose of the CMA is to analyze data from properties similar to the subject property that has sold recently in order to project the realistic price at which the subject property would sell. I’m not an appraiser, but what I’ve always done is make upward and downward adjustments to the projected value of the subject property based on features and characteristics of the comparables I use. Some are based on “gut” feelings while other adjustments come about through rules of thumb I have developed from experience. Putting a value on real estate is an inexact science at best, and this methodology has worked pretty well for me over the years. I use a completely different method for projecting the value of land and property with residential development potential. October 22, 1957 - April 7, 2014 Sandy passed away peacefully on April 7, 2014, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Sissy was a genuine, kind soul. Her quick wit and sense of humor touched all who knew her. Her great strength, hardworking ethics, and determination was an inspiration to us all. Predeceased by her mom Velma, dad Norman, stepdad Leonard, sister Connie, brothers Lorne and Barry. Survived by brothers Carl (Diane), Ceryle, and Will (Cheri); sisters-in-law Caroline and Lynde, nieces Gina (Richard) and Kirsten; nephews Bob (Tracey), Tyler (Olive), Rod, and Dan; many aunts and uncles, and her fur babies Sam, Sophie, and Sara. Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and staff at NRGH who cared for Sandy during her recent stay. Thank you to our family and friends for all of your love and support. The VIBI Mariners scratched and clawed and might have hoped for better at the ballpark. Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Baseball Institute won one of four games against the Okanagan Coyotes this past weekend at Serauxmen Stadium. The M’s lost 5-3 then won 6-0 on Saturday; the next day they lost 1-0 and 9-5. Sunday’s losses w e re e s p e c i a l l y close, as the Mariners had their chances in the early game and also in the barnburner game, which needed 11 innings to be settled. In the first game the M’s allowed only five hits but made four errors. Steve McKinnon took the loss, allowing one earned run over six innings. Greg Brady had two hits and Tyson Dyck had two runs batted in. Jorhn Kaluzniak
was the winning pitcher in that day’s rematch, allowing just one hit over six innings while striking out 10. Chad Schultz was 3-for-3 at the plate, Mitch Hawkins was 2-for-4, Cody Pendergast hit a triple and drove in two runs and Ty Armstrong also had two RBIs. S u n d a y ’s e a r l y game saw VIBI’s Connor Russell thow a complete nine-inning game, allowing three hits, no earned runs and striking out 13 batters. Brady had two hits in that contest. The series finale was a crazy game, with the teams combining for 31 hits. McKinnon was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Connor Merilees hit two doubles and Pendergast, Brady, Dyck and Schultz had two hits apiece. Austin Penner was tagged with the loss. GAME ON … VIBI travels to Kelowna to play Okanagan and the Calgar y Dinos on Saturday (April 19) and Sunday.

Nanaimo curlers brought back some shiny souvenirs from national championships. Team B.C. won bronze at the Canadian Masters Curling Championships in Coaldale, Alta. last week. Nanaimo’s Zorka Smith and Eilene Mitton were part of skip Lorraine Jeffries’s Port Alberni rink. The team lost 3-2 to Saskatchewan in the semifinals but beat Manitoba 4-3 to take bronze. “The event was absolutely wonderful,” Jeffries said in a press release. “Extremely well run and a lot of fun.”

Timbermen teams will hang out with Clippers at Beban House The Nanaimo Timbermen needed a place to stay and the Nanaimo Clippers are good sports. The Timbermen senior A and junior A lacrosse clubs announced Monday they have moved their
office into Beban House at Beban Park, where they will cozy up beside the Nanaimo Clippers. A press release from the Timbermen expressed thanks, calling the Clippers “a shining example of
how co-operation in sport makes us a stronger community.” The T-men announced at the same time that Jen Kennedy has been hired in a corporate sales and game-day role. Kennedy
is marketing director with the Clippers. The Timbermen are continuing negotiations with sponsors and hope to finalize a deal with a major sponsor. Meanwhile, on-floor
preparations for the 2014 season are underway. The junior A T-men play an exhibition against the Victoria Shamrocks on Wednesday (April 16) at 7 p.m. at Fuller Lake Arena. The team begins the B.C.
Junior A Lacrosse League season on the road April 26 and plays its home opener May 3 at Frank Crane Arena. Look for more on the junior Timbermen in an upcoming issue.

Nanaimo Diamonds synchro team gets chance to gleam Nanaimo Diamonds swimmers got a chance to show what they do so well in the water. The Diamonds synchronized swim team competed at a Synchro B.C. regional meet at Coquitlam’s
City Centre Aquatic Complex this past weekend. Nanaimo’s provincial-stream teams are doing really well, said Brenda Scott, Diamonds coach. The athletes performed a sort of dress rehearsal
last Wednesday night at Beban Pool and were completely in synch. “They are looking really strong for the point of the season,” Scott said. “I think they just have to keep their focus, keep their
energy levels up, have fun.” The Coquitlam meet was a provincial meet for masters swimmers and for the youngest Diamonds, it was a
recreational meet that felt like a big deal. “It’s kind of exciting for them,” said Scott. “They get to go over and experience a big competition.”

The Nanaimo Pirates let their problems compound, and it cost them.The Hub City Paving Pirates lost their first two games of the B.C. Premier Baseball League season on Sunday, falling 7-4 and 11-1 against the Victoria Mariners on the road. In both games it was big innings that led to losses. In the season opener, Nanaimo was leading up until the sixth inning, when Vic batted around to score
seven runs. Luke Skingle took the loss on the mound, striking out five. Thomas Negrin led the Pirates offensively with two doubles and two RBIs and Zach Diewert had a hit and two walks. The Mariners broke the second game open with four runs in the fourth inning and five more in the fifth for a mercy-rule win. Garrett Goodall suffered the loss on the mound and he and Adam McLeod had Nanaimo’s hits. The Pirates play their home opener Saturday (April 19) against the Victoria Eagles at Serauxmen Stadium.
