Capture Sidney’s character Sidney Sister Cities Association preparing for 2015 calendar Devon MacKenzie News staff

The Sidney Sister Cities Association (SSCA) is once again gearing up to produce a calendar showcasing Sidney’s charm and featuring some of area’s most talented amateur and professional photographers. The calendars, which are made up annually out of photos submitted to a committee within the SSCA, are sold by the association as a fundraiser to help with programming they run in conduction with the Town’s sister cities of Cairns, Australia, Niimi, Japan and Anacortes, Washington. “The funds raised go “We’re hoping towards projects we run includto foster better ing two $1,000 relationships scholarships to Parkland stuwith our sister dents who will cities because travel to Cairns of these types as ambassadors of our town,” of international explained SSCA exchanges.” member and calendar com– Bob McLure mittee chair Bob McLure, adding that the SSCA is also involved with artist in residence projects with Cairns, among other things. “We’re hoping to foster better relationships with our sister cities because of these types of international exchanges,” said McLure. Ladybugs go free at Easter Butterfly Gardens in Central Saanich holds its annual ladybug release this weekend. Submitted photo

CENTRAL SAANICH — Visitors to Butterfly Gardens this weekend will have the chance to release a small handful of ladybugs into the gardens. The annual ladybug release takes place April 18 to 21 and is fun for youngsters — and the young at heart. The insects are helpful with natural pest control.

Butterfly Gardens General Manager David Roberts says the facility received 3,000 ladybugs this year — a coup considering the lack of the insects this year after a harsh winter in California, where many ladybugs are raised. To find out more, visit www.butterflygardens.com. — News staff

Retail initiative garners support Save Our Sidney group should hold Mayor’s Task Force accountable, says local retail consultant Steven Heywood News staff

Some 50 residents and business owners have stepped up to take a more active role in the future of retail in Sidney’s downtown core. A new group called Save Our Sidney (SOS) has formed under the direction of the Sidney Tourism Improvement Group (STIG) and Steve Duck of the TIDES Group. They held a forum April 9 (after News Review press deadlines) at the Mary Winspear Centre, featuring retail consultant Richard Talbot and local business owner Garry Froese. Froese, owner of In Touch Cards and Gifts on Beacon Avenue, said Sidney finds itself under siege right now from proposed commercial

developments in Central Saanich (Jesken Town Centre) and North Saanich (Sandown Commons). “Vacancy rates are high and (the Town) has no long-range business plans — only beautification,” Froese said. “There are businesses in Sidney that do not have the wherewithal to hang on for two more years.” That timeline is being touted by Talbot as the buffer between now and when the new commercial properties start to develop. “Sidney isn’t seen as a destination shopping hub,” Froese continued. “We need to be able to attract people outside of the community ... as well as hold on to our local customers.” Froese outlined a series of

Talbot, making his third public presentation on threats to local retail, said his hope is that the SOS group gets plenty

of public support to back up the efforts of the recentlyannounced Mayor’s Task Force on Sidney’s downtown. “As a professional in this field, it would be remiss of me not to do anything,” he said. “If nothing is done, Sidney might have to downsize its downtown, like Oak Bay or Ganges.” Talbot said the SOS needs to support the task force and be prepared to hold it accountable — as well as keep the issue at the fore during this fall’s municipal election. He added a workshop will be held soon for the estimated 50 people who signed up to learn more through SOS. Denis Paquette, head of STIG, said he’s looking forward to being involved with the Mayor’s Task Force. He continued, however, to advocate for two-way traffic along Beacon Avenue — something that Mayor Larry Cross has stated will not be on the table for this task force.

Stelly’s climbs to the top Devon MacKenzie News staff

Stelly’s Secondary was abuzz last Friday as the school played host to a climbing competition with the Island’s only other climbing academy. Participants from the Cowichan Secondary Climbing Academy attended The Boulders Climbing Gym at Stelly’s last Friday, April 11 for a friendly scrambled format competition featuring bouldering and top rope events. Cowichan Secondary has had their academy established for a year and Stelly’s was happy to host the friendly competition between the two schools. “We have a lot of students who are just starting out in climbing and they don’t get to compete like some of the more advanced climbers do so this gave them a chance to not only compete but also to meet and talk with other competitors,” explained Ryan Braun, a teacher from Stelly’s. “The competition is friendly and it’s all about people working together to create a community.” Stelly’s dominated the competition, finishing top three in all categories but two. In Women’s Recreation Hallie Nystedt took first, Cianna Wolski second and Tessa Farrell third (all from Stelly’s). In Men’s Recreation Will Podmoroff took first, Brandon Latouf second and Gil White third (all from Stelly’s). In Women’s Experience Marina Steele took first, Shannon Ogden second and Karoline Boller third (all fromStelly’s). In Men’s Experience Kjarten Einarsson took first place, Reid Brady second and McGregor Abbott (all from Stelly’s). In Women’s Open Stelly’s girls Evelyna Trottier and Niina Chatham took first and second, and Aedyn McKintrick from Cowichan took third. Members-only fitness club looks to open in May Steven Heywood News staff

Steve Weller is happy to be opening a new business close to downtown Sidney in the wake of recent worries about the state of the local economy. Weller, owner of Hi Tech Collision, recently purchased a former gym facility next to Thrifty Foods off James White Boulevard. He is renovating the space and renaming it the Peninsula Fitness Club. “I used to come here in the morning with other local business owners,” he said. “This was kind of like our coffee shop.” When the gym closed, Weller said he didn’t want to see that happen. So, he bought the property and the equipment and is consolidating two separate spaces into one gym and will be offering up the second commercial

North Saanich asks for MMBC delay NORTH SAANICH — Municipal councillors in the District of North Saanich are adding their voice to others asking the province to delay the start of a new recycling system in B.C. District council voted unanimously on April 7 to write to the premier, asking to delay the start of Multi-Material B.C. (MMBC) taking over the province’s existing blue box recycling system. The Peninsula News Review had written to the District, seeking support for a newspaper industry effort to set up a discussion with the province on the issue. Newspaper companies are facing millions in extra fees associated with MMBC and fears for lost jobs, as well as no net benefit to taxpayers by changing the system. — News staff

Taking a bigger picture

A

large portion of the recent Save Our Sidney (SOS) downtown retail forum at the Mary Winspear Centre was taken up with extended op/ed pieces and unnecessary sniping and bashing of Sidney’s mayor and council. It’s time people get past their little empires and work towards a solution to what most everyone agrees are serious threats to the continued viability of local businesses. From the first day concerns were raised about proposed large commercial sites on the outskirts of Sidney, there has been plenty of pronouncements but little in the way of direct action. There have been plenty of disparate opinions, yet little in the way of people stepping up to actually do something. In the very early stages of the debate, even the Town seemed to want to take a back seat and let the business community lead. As the issue grew and voices were made louder, Mayor Larry Cross has launched a task force to gather those various voices and try to make something happen. It took some time, but he deserves some credit for attempting to pull together residents and businesses. This task force and the Save Our Sidney forum represent a turning point from all talk to at least a bit of action. Which is better than continued talk and no action. If the SOS group has signed up 50 interested people, hopefully they’re willing to go beyond the idea stage. That’s what a task force needs to do and it’s going to need active, interested and invested people. Not everyone from SOS will make it to the task force and will have to rely on its representatives to speak for them — and work on more than just the two-way traffic debate (which the Mayor says is dead for now and won’t be on the table). Individual ideas are fine to get the ball rolling, but hopefully this task force will roll them all into a bigger picture for Beacon Avenue and downtown Sidney. Taking too narrow a view could yield only window dressing instead of a solid foundation on which local business can stand. What do you think? “The chair doesn’t like the regional panels,” Bennett told me. “It’s a pain in the ass for the chair to have to deal with 18 farmers from all over the province in making decisions. It would be six farmers, because only one person from the regional panel actually sits on the provincial commission. “He thinks that it’s unwieldy, and he’d rather have the decisionmaking centralized in Burnaby. But we changed that. We decided as a duly elected government in 2003 that we wanted the regions to have a say on this stuff, so the intention of the legislation, we felt, was actually being defeated, because we hadn’t made it mandatory.” It will be mandatory soon, and Bullock’s days as commission chair appear to be numbered. “There’s no more discretion for any future chair to monkey with it,” Bennett added. One of Bennett’s key issues is denial of secondary residence construction to keep families on the land in the Interior. The legislation also introduces social and economic factors in weighing decisions in the North, Cariboo and Kootenay regions, where in most cases development pressure is an urban myth. The main ALC board will still have authority to revisit a local panel decision if the chair deems it inconsistent with the mandate to protect farmland. The awesome power of a simple bouquet of flowers H e came striding out of a lane, a cheerful young fellow carrying a knot of flowers and whistling a happy tune. As he passed us I touched his arm and said, “That sounds so lovely. My Dad used to whistle and I really loved to hear him.” He stopped, smiled at me and pressed the bunch of wild flowers into my hand, turned and went on his way, again whistling. I was overcome with such a wave of joy. It was hard not to cry. My husband, who wit-

nessed my delight, patted me on the shoulder and said, ”That was a nice thing for him to do, wasn’t it?” I agreed so wholeheartedly he looked somewhat shocked and said, “Come on, we’re going to be late if we don’t get a move on!” So we walked on, me clutching the flowers and the lovely warm feeling that chance meeting had provided. About a week later Jim, my husband, arrived home from work somewhat later than usual. As he came up the stairs into the

Sister Cities Association calendar to showcase Sidney’s charm Continued from page 1

The calendar project will see photo submissions being accepted until the end of the month (noon on Wednesday, April 30) to McLure and the submissions will then be reviewed by a panel. Winning photos will be selected using a blind selection process, said McLure. Criteria for selection, he continued, include quality, subject matter and how well each photograph illustrates the charm of Sidney. “People don’t have to be professional photographers to submit photos and an individual may submit as many

Bob McLure shows off the 2014 calendar. photos as they wish.” People who wish to submit photos can send them by mail or drop them off by hand to McLure at 9–2235 Harbour Rd., Sidney, V8L 2P7. Photos must be printed on 4x6 inch

photographic paper (glossy and borderless) and the photographer must be clearly identified on the back of the photo by name, phone number and email address. File information as

follows also must be included on the back of the photo: whether the photo was shot in RAW, TIFF or JPEG format and the megapixel size as well as the camera brand and model. Any visible people in the photos must sign a release which should be included. The calendars will be released on the July long weekend and will be for sale at the Town of Sidney, Tanners Books, Pebbles Gift Shop and the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, among others. This year’s focus will be to select a photo for the calendar’s cover that sums up Sidney’s character, said McLure.

“We are looking for people to capture the charm and small town atmosphere of Sidney,”

he said. For more information visit www.sidneysistercitiesassociation.com

may be one of the most difficult things you will do as it can unleash a wide range of emotions for you both. On the positive side, there are many things you can do to increase your chances of successfully introducing and discussing this issue with your parents. 1) Understand why YOU want your parents to move into a retirement community. Be very clear with yourself as to why your parents should move out of their home and into a residence with services and support. 2) Prepare for “The Talk;” Do your homework. Gather as much information as possible ahead of time. The more you know about this topic, the more prepared you are to express your thoughts, answer questions, handle surprises, and maintain a calm and respectful tone. 3) Put yourself in your parents’ shoes. If you can see this from your parents’ perspectives, you’ll be more sympathetic to their fears and objections and better able to address those. Acknowledging and respecting their feelings will go a long way in gaining their trust and willingness to work toward your common goal of finding a safe and enriching environment for them. t’s almost our favourite time of the year – Earth Day is just around the corner on April 22! Each year, we organize an April campaign to help educate and engage people of all ages and backgrounds to lessen their impact on the Earth. A great way to start is integrating easy environmental actions into your day-to-day life – those small changes add up to a larger cumulative impact over time. And not only are these changes good for the environment, they’re often good for your health and can even help you save money! Over the course of a busy week or month, it’s easy to lose track of our environmental efforts. So this year we’re asking you to join us, as we Make It Count for Earth Day! Learning about nature: We’re focusing on 4 action categories – EAT, GROW, TRANSFORM and SHARE. Set a goal for the number of

actions you want to complete in each category throughout the month, and count them up using our printable calendar. Share your results using the #MIC4ED hashtag to compare your totals with friends, classmates, colleagues or perfect strangers across the country. When you register to participate, you’ll also be automatically entered to win great prizes. More importantly, you’ll join others around the country who are making their Earth Month count! They say it takes 21 repetitions to form a habit – after a month of counting your actions, we hope these easy actions will become a part of your daily routine and last all year long. Get started today and make every day Earth Day!

Celebrate the earth: Many ways to celebrate Earth Day Ever wondered how Earth Day started? This observance arose from an interest in gathering national support for environmental issues. In 1970, activist John McConnell and Gaylord Nelson separately asked people to join in a grassroots demonstration. Millions and today Earth Day continues to be

widely celebrated with events on both dates. The most common practice of celebration is to plant new trees for Earth Day. Earth Day Canada (EDC), a national environmental charity founded in 1990, provides Canadians with the practical knowledge and tools they need to lessen their impact

on the environment. In 2004, it was recognized as the top environmental education organization in North America for its innovative year-round programs and educational resources by the Washingtonbased North American Association for Environmental Education, the world’s largest

association of environmental educators. In 2008, it was chosen as Canada’s “Outstanding Non-profit Organization” by the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication. EDC regularly partners with thousands of organizations in all parts of Canada. Visit www.earthday.ca

Getting young girls interested in hockey was the goal of Sunday’s All Girls Day of Hockey at Panorama Recreation Centre. Tricia Johnston, the event coordinator for Peninsula Minor Hockey, says she hopes the weekend on-ice activities interests more girls in playing hockey. “Our numbers have been growing,” she said, noting the association had Bantam and Peewee team this past season. Johnston said if enough girls register this year, there could be teams in the Novice (age 7 to 8) and Atom (age 9 to 10) divisions. Registration takes place next month and the season resumes in September. Holly Reid, a coach of young female skaters in the association, says Sunday’s event had a lot of girls with a little bit of experience and a few with
