The Grand Forks Invitational (GFI) Baseball Tournament is returning this year with a lineup of 12 teams including some of the top squads from the Pacific Northwest. Fans can expect some great ball played in Grand Forks’ own James Donaldson Park with 12 teams competing for big prize money. All 25 games will take place at the park. The tournament kicks off on Wednesday, June 25 and runs through Monday, June 30, the day before Canada Day, when the final takes place. “We’ve got 11 of the 12 teams confirmed,” said Joan Thomas, GFI coordinator. “We’ve got some strong teams returning such as Seattle Studs and Thurston Country. We’ve got some new ones such as
West Coast Guns out of California; we’ve got the North Sound Emeralds, which we haven’t seen before.” Representing Canada will be the always powerful Langley Sr. Blaze as well as the Kamloops Sun Devils and the Trail Orioles. “People have their favourites,” she said. “Some people come to see the (San Diego) Stars, some come to see the Studs. A lot of people will come over from the Trail area to watch the AM Ford Orioles.” With no local team, the Orioles are sure to draw a lot of local fans. “Trail’s closer to home,” said Thomas. “They have a lot of fans here (as well).” With Trail hosting the 2014 B.C. Provincial Championship in August, the GFI will be a great tune-up for the Kootenay representatives.

ICBC reminds drivers to be responsible behind the wheel
Road safety tour comes at time of mourning for Trail community
VALERIE ROSSI
West Kootenay Advertiser
Car crashes remain the No. 1 preventable cause of death for youth in B.C. and distracted driving is the leading factor in crashes resulting in injuries or death, according to ICBC. Each year the Southern Interior sees 34 people die on average because of distracted driving related crashes, which is higher than any other area (Lower Mainland: 31, North Central: 12 and Vancouver Island: 14), according to ICBC statistics. “Education is key and we have to empower our young drivers with the ability to make good decisions for themselves and just constantly remind them that driving is a privilege and not a right and they are responsible to keep themselves and their fellow drivers on the road safe,” said Ingrid Brakop, road safety coordinator for ICBC. “No. 1 wear your seat belt because first of all it’s the law and secondly seat belts save lives and we know this.” Youth tend to be overrepresented in terms of impaired driving collisions and distracted driving, which is why ICBC focuses its road safety programs on young drivers. Road safety speaker Kevin Brooks started his tour of the Southern Interior this week, with plans to stop at Grand Forks Secondary April 28, Stanley Humphries Secondary April 29 and LV Rogers Secondary and Mount Sentinel Secondary April 30. Every high school had the chance to
sign up for the presentation that highlights real-life consequences of taking risks behind the wheel. From his wheelchair, Brooks shares his story of how his decision to drive drunk one night resulted in the loss of a friend and his mobility. “He’s a very powerful, dynamic speaker and he talks to the kids about that he knew in his heart of hearts that he shouldn’t have been driving that night but he decided to do it anyway so now he suffers the consequences of that,” said Brakop. The tour comes in the wake of a serious car accident in Trail, where alcohol was not considered to be a factor but the RCMP have concluded speed was and that the three youth involved were not wearing their seat belts. The Greater Trail community is mourning the loss of a senior J. L. Crowe Secondary student and holding on with hope for two other classmates in critical condition. The three young men, ages 17-18, were seriously injured when their car lost control near the Trail Airport April 7. The BC Coroners Service has confirmed that 17-year-old Nolan Handley of Trail succumbed to his injuries April 9 at Kelowna General Hospital. Handley was well known in the sporting community, playing a variety of sports and most recently as an affiliate player with the Nelson Leafs of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League. The Leafs held a moment of silence for their teammate prior to the start of the Cyclone Taylor Cup
provincial Junior B championships on Thursday in Nelson. Crowe principal David DeRosa would like express his deepest respects and condolences to the families directly affected by the event. His thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. “Our staff and students continue to absorb and cope with the events of (last) week with the support of their families, friends and in some cases, counselling,” he told the Times via email. Crowe follows a grief and crisis intervention protocol that includes a range of student and staff support options. The high school also gives parents information and access to community services. “We do our best to reach out to the entire school population and then as staff, we are aware of specific reactions and behaviours to watch for in individual students,” he added. “We provide students with the option of direct access to our counsellors or staff, provide external professional supports and or have parents come to the school to pick up their children if that is their preference.” Teachers are debriefed daily, he said, all while trying to keep face and provide students with routine and the comfort of familiarity at their school. “It is a very difficult balance,” he said. The two other youth involved remained in critical condition as of press time Monday.

The GFI is still looking for volunteers to help make the tournament run successfully. Locals and visitors alike are most welcome to offer their time. Anyone volunteering for at least 12 hours will receive a tournament pass. “People want to volunteer and then watch some of the games,” said Thomas. “It’s a good combination.” Volunteers are required for jobs such as working the main concession, guest relations, vendors, cashiers, first aid and souvenirs. “We’ve got a volunteer page on our website (grandforksbaseball.com) where you can either email or download a PDF and fax it in,” said Thomas. “There are lots of areas to volunteer. We can always find room.” Thomas said the GFI needs 300 volunteers in total to make the tournament run.

Roller Derby double-header in Rossland
There is going to be big weekend of Roller Derby happening in Rossland. The West Kootenay Roller Derby is holding a double-header in Rossland at 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 in the Rossland Arena. The Rossland/Trail Roller Girls start by taking on the
Dam City Rollers in the first game. After a win of almost 200 points the Dams are on fire, but want to leave the stopdrop-and-rolling to the home team. Nelson Killjoys then face Valley Brutality at 7 p.m. The Killjoys won its debut but Valley Brutality has sharp-
ened its edges so fans can expect a heated game. Get your tickets for $10 in advance at Cedar Avenue Salon & Esthetiques (Trail), The Arlington (Trail), The Flying Steamshovel General Store (Rossland), or buy online at www.kootenayrollerderby. com.

Cyclone Taylor Cup was a great boost for City of Nelson

KEVIN MILLS West Kootenay Advertiser
The Nelson Leafs did not win the Cyclone Taylor Cup. However the city is considering itself a winner for hosting a successful event. The four-day long junior B hockey tournament attracted a minimum of 500 people to the area, which helped create a mini economic boom in what is normally a quiet month. “I think from an economic perspective you see the benefits for the hoteliers, the restaurants and people in the food and beverage industry,” explained Tom Thomson, executive director of the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce. “There’s a lot of people here in town, right now, who are spending some money and coming in from all around the province, so having an event like this is really good.” While there is obviously a positive economic impact for Nelson, Thomson said they don’t have any estimated figures on how much money it generates. What he did say is that the event is timely. “At this time of the year — we are sort of in-between the seasons — ski season is over and we’re not into the summer tourism season yet, so having an event like the Cyclone Taylor Cup now is really important.” Nelson’s streets have been full of visitors during the past week, getting to know the community in-between hockey games. “A number of people have come into the Visitors Centre and said they are with one of the teams

travelling here,” said Thomson. He believes having a positive experience in Nelson will encourage them to return. Thomson also noted that the hockey tournament was not the only event taking place this week. Nelson was also hosting the Kootenay Festival of the Arts and a high school music festival. “Obviously our biggest tourist season is summertime, but when you get the extra traffic at this time of year, it’s really
positive for the community.” Nelson Mayor John Dooley agreed with Thomson about the economic benefit, saying every hotel room in the community is sold out. However he believes there’s more to it than just finances. “It’s a real emotional boost for the community as well, to come out and support their hockey team. “The neat thing about it is that we have the volunteer base to put this thing together and that’s

Fifty-fifth in a semi-alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Falls City was a classic — and notorious — real estate promotion that took in victims and then went nowhere. The townsite, at the confluence of the Salmo and Pend d’Oreille rivers, was first mentioned in the Nelson Daily News on May 13, 1911: “J.D. Anderson has two parties of surveyors up at Falls City laying off additional town lots. It is reported that there has been a brisk sale of the lots in this new townsite.” The streets were Main, Eureka, Bonanza, Summit, Emerald, Nugget, Queen, and Motherlode, after local mines. While the name might suggest the town was near a cascade, in fact it was after Ontario-born John Wesley (Jack) Falls (1876-1952), the first white settler to take up land on the Colville Indian reserve. Adie said: “Jack Falls was a notorious character who lived along the Pend d’Oreille. He was really a swindler and laid out a townsite on the Salmo River on a mountainside. He was representative for the Waneta Power Co. — an outfit which milked the public, selling land they didn’t own along the Pend d’Oreille.” Art Buckley, in a 1979 interview published in Beaver Valley and Pend d’Oreille, added that his father worked for Falls and his partner, the appropriately-named Mr. Caper: “They were going to build a dam and a power plant on the Salmo River. It was a stock-selling scheme; he was quite a promoter and he could tell you black was white and you’d believe it … He got farmers in the States by the dozens and they just handed money out. They would invest a few thou-
sand dollars and then have nothing to live on during the winter, so they would come up here and work, but draw no wages.” One victim of the Falls City scheme was Bill Guillaume. According to Turnbull in Ghost Towns and Drowned Towns of West Kootenay, word spread to England, and in 1913, “Guillaume left with his wife and young daughter to be postmaster in the new town. He soon discovered that Falls City existed only on paper. After spending the winter in a cabin behind the depot at Waneta, he moved to Trail where in the next 60 years he and his wife became valued and loved citizens.” Jack Falls, meanwhile, died in Trail and is buried in an unmarked grave. Of his various schemes, all that was accomplished was a sawmill and suspension bridge across the Pend d’Oreille. A steamshovel he used in a placer mining promotion ended up buried in the sand across from Waneta Plaza.

There’s no better time than now to embrace your inner motorcyclist and have the time of your life. Alexandra Straub

You don’t have to start on the road Many of the top road racers in the world didn’t start on the pavement. They started in the dirt. Why? Because it teaches you how to control a bike in less than ideal traction environments. Also, if you fall, it doesn’t hurt as much! You can certainly get your feet wet when it comes to learning clutch and brake control on a “softer” surface, too. Furthermore, you don’t need a learner’s permit if you are riding off road. When and if you want to transition to the street riding, you’ll need it for that. Check out Popkum Motor Park’s Lessons/Training (www.popkummotorpark.com) program for all ages, as well as the BC Off Road Motorcycle Association’s website (www.bcorma.ca) for upcoming MSF Dirt Bike Schools. Another perk to starting to build your bike confidence on the dirt, training programs aren’t as expensive. So, this is me, the little white angel on your shoulder whispering, “Go on, get on two wheels!” But remember, safety is paramount. Take the test, go to school and thank me later.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor
for the
Week April 18, 2014
Tip of the Week: The tsunami of energy indicated by the Cardinal Grand Cross continues to roll in and in fact will reach its next peak on Easter Sunday (April 20). This energy wave pattern is sure to be stirring and shaking people in all kinds of ways. The effects may occur physically, materially, psychologically or spiritually. Either way, the more flexible or cooperative one is with the ebbs and flows of life, the better. The deeper dynamics of how Astrology works is a reminder of the weave of our own consciousness, both individually and collectively, as an extension of the cosmic reality as illustrated by the planetary inter-relationships. This is the deeper meaning of the grand continuum. It may all sound a bit ‘out there’, yet, it is a simple reminder that we exist on a planet and are very much ‘one with’ it and by extension, it is one with the solar system, the galaxy and the universe. Speaking of planets, April 22nd is Earth Day. This grass roots movement which originated in 1970 and founded by some visionary, spirited and environmentally minded people is now recognized all over the world. Unfortunately, the exploits of big business and even governments, like the Canadian, seem not to be so moved by its visionary message. Perhaps the powerful Grand Cross will have the effect is shaking us all a bit more awake to look more closely and further down the road and make some needed adjustments in our attitude and actions. Astrology with its leaning to appreciate the notion of destiny and freewill are not in contradiction, it is part of ‘the plan’ that they too are part of the same weave of consciousness. Happy Easter and Earth Day too!

With each new day you are steadily changing regarding your perspectives, attitude and approach to relationships. Unless you are resisting, the change implies realizing more equality in one or more of your most significant relationships. Moved by love and perhaps compassion too, you feel determined to make sincere efforts. Don’t ask why, just ask how. A busy time behind the scenes continues. Yet, you will take more deliberate and assertive actions this week. Paying strict attention to the details has been an important theme. Meanwhile, a process of healing relationships is featured. The one you have with your own self may be the most important one to consider first though. Peace without begins within. Learning to be your own best friend is a current theme. Good friendships include harmony, honesty, acknowledgement, respect, support, constructive criticism and quality time shared. Directing these attributes to your own inner state and dialogue process is ever ideal, especially now. Decipher for yourself what makes you special and affirm it, all of it. Some big shifts and changes continue to shake your world. These are pushing you to get to the bottom of things. Spring cleaning and renovation projects are distinct possibilities. In the bigger picture you have likely be gearing-up for many months to make some important moves. Contending with some major power players is likely. Persevere to win. The time has arrived for you to take to the stage somehow. A more serious and work oriented focus is now required. Where you were preparing and perhaps rehearsing over the past several weeks, now it is time to perform. Trust that people value your talents and abilities and do your part by making your presence known. Circumstances have been pushing you to dig deep over the past several weeks. Now it is time to broaden your scope. While collaboration is often effective, be careful not to lean too much on people and situations. Continue to remain as flexible as you can. Your energy levels may not match your ambitions these days so establish an even, steady pace.

A deepened desire and focus upon money and finances in general will become apparent this week. Yet to succeed, you may have to give more than you would usually. While this is generally an expansive time, you are also wise to exercise a healthy measure of restraint. In the bigger picture, this includes paying closer attention to your health. Not only your entire lifestyle but your habitual mode of perception as well, have and continue to be challenged. All being well, you are doing the inner work and adapting proactively. Negatively, you may be contending with self-doubt demons. Decipher how you can best give to people and situations, more than to receive, then do it and those doubts will dissolve. After a few playful weeks, you will now enter into a more serious and sober work mode. The transition will be somewhat gradual, yet steady. Creating beauty in your home environment is featured. Deciphering more fully who you are and what you want to have and do next in your life is on your mind. You have already entered new territory so keep going. Your life may be described as a steady march of power these days. This is very much in alignment with your nature and destiny. However, how you express and assert your power is important. ‘What does it gain a person to forsake heaven for earth?’ how you define heaven is up to you. A hint: heaven on earth is realized as loving, harmonious relationships. The desire to establish a more reliable home base is coming to the fore. Balancing a peaceful environment with one that supports your practical needs is extra important. Focus to experience inner peace to feel free for worry, impatience and the like. It may take another month anyway and up to three before you experience the breakthrough and expansion that you seek. Focusing to produce positive changes in your overall mode of approach and perhaps your income stream as well continues. Your ambitions are strong and you are willing to do the work. Yet, it may feel like you are a fish swimming up-stream. Fortunately, your focus will get stronger over the coming weeks. Even three steps forward and two steps back is one step ahead. Persevere!

Bigger fines for distracted drivers a distraction
By Keith Morgan
People that talk and text on their hand-held smartphones while driving are not nearly as smart as their technology of choice. There you go; I have made my position clear on the current red-hot driving topic of the day in the letters pages of every newspaper and on radio talk shows coast to coast. However, that does not mean I am offering my unqualified support for the countrywide torrent of get-eventougher legislation, designed to pick
the pockets of delinquent drivers. Currently in BC, the fine is $167 and last year police here issued 51,000 tickets for distracted driving. Victoria knows a vote winner when it sees one and it is pondering a big fine hikes and additional demerit points. The local action comes on the heels of Ontario introducing legislation last month that increases fines from the already high $300 to $1,000. Fanning the public outrage, BC Attorney General Suzanne Anton announced that distracted driving is killing more British Columbians than
impaired driving. Forgive my cynicism, but I really question the sudden rush of statistics showing how heinous and deadly a crime this is. I have always advocated for handsfree calling while driving and figured “driving without due care and attention” was a sufficiently good catchall charge for those causing a collision during hands-on operation of a cell phone. The fine is $368. When I began writing on this topic about five years or so ago, there were no such statistics available. It was all anecdotal because, let’s face it, it’s an
offence very visible to other drivers. It’s always seemed to me that drivers who talk and text are reckless risk-takers, who run red lights, follow too closely and make dangerous lane changes even without a phone in their hand. My point being that when they crash while performing one of the preceding illicit manoeuvres with phone in hand it’s a little too convenient to blame it all on operation of the device.

Bigger fines for distracted drivers a distraction continued from page B4
Much of the current public debate was spurred by the revelation that a serial offender in Vancouver racked up 26 tickets and fines of $4,300 for distracted driving since 2010. He may be the pin-up boy for those seeking tougher penalties but interestingly, it appears he never once caused an accident during the time he was caught in cellular action! Now the law is in force, I’ve no problem in accepting it but let’s not kid ourselves into thinking this will stop idiots such as this overly chatty man continuing to take risks on the road that threaten us all. The fines are already high enough to deter regular drivers who are tempted to err occasionally. That said; I do worry about how zealously this law is en-
forced. I frequently hear of tickets issued to drivers who mere glance at their device while at a red light or move it to a new resting place around the dash. I fear the debate about the fines is a distraction in itself from getting to the heart of dangerous driving. Therefore, I am pleased to hear Anton is also considering public education campaigns on distracted driving, similar to previous initiatives targeting seatbelt use and drinking and driving. That is smarter. Research shows that many distractions contribute to road carnage. Be careful what you wish for because there are other technological distractions in our vehicles that could invite bans of which you may not enthusiastically support. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

This vehicle gets you around town but the four-cylinder engine just doesn’t have enough power on the highway. I found myself constantly pushing the gas pedal to the floor just to keep up with traffic. Perhaps it is the CVT transmission but I would like to see a V6 option for this vehicle. Interestingly, the windshield wipers are noteworthy but not for a good reason. It was raining one day during my test drive and as I stopped at a light I felt the car sway back and forth with the wipers, I quickly dismissed it for a big truck driving by but it was at every stop. I turned them on fully and the car rocked back and forth with every swipe. I have heard about soft suspension but really? If it is a small crossover vehicle you are looking for and like the feeling of sitting up higher than a car, try this one. Just don’t pack five full-size adults in there and try to tackle the steep terrain of the Coquihalla highway. Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel competes on performance at a price By Zack Spencer
The introduction of the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee showcased the direction of the new FiatChrysler partnership. It went on to win more awards that any other SUV; in fact, I chose it as one of my favourite vehicles that year. Sales have been strong for not only Jeep but the entire Chrysler group. Freshness has been into each new vehicle and this latest 2014 EcoDiesel version is another example. For this model year, the Grand Cherokee gets a refreshed front and rear, plus interior tweaks and a thrifty diesel under the hood. Looks The most noticeable updates for 2014 include
a thinner front grille, narrower front headlights with LED accents. This really makes the latest model pop; especially when you compare it to the last model. The EcoDiesel option is only available in two trim levels, and this an expensive vehicle. The Overland is the cheapest diesel and it starts at roughly $58,000, $3000 more than a V6 model but the same price as the V8. The top of range Summit diesel starts at $62,000. In comparison, the base VW Touareg diesel starts at $55,000 but most of the other German mid-sized SUVs with a diesel, like the ML from Mercedes or the X5 from BMW also start in the low $60,000 range.

Inside One of the biggest changes at Chrysler has been the attention to detail now placed on interior design and refinement. The latest U-connect computer interface is one of the best in the business; many high-end makers could learn a thing or two from Chrysler. The large 8.4-inch screen is one of the biggest on the market and it is very quick to the touch, going from one function to the next is logical and responsive. Pairing a smartphone takes under 30 seconds and the best feature is the map screen, which enables the embedding of a picture in the same way as picture-in-picture TV does. The dash is covered in stitched leather and the cabin overall is simple and elegant. All EcoDiesel models come with leather seats and the back seats can even be heated.
Drive The biggest change for 2014 is the introduction of an all-new 3.0-litre direct inject turbocharged V6 diesel engine along with an 8-speed automatic. With 420 lb.ft. of torque, this engine just rockets away from a light and cruises effortlessly on the highway. There is a big premium to get this engine over a V6, or lower trim level V8 gasoline versions, but there are some compelling reasons to choose it. Fuel economy is number one. This heavy truck is rated at 9.8 L/100km in the city and only 7.0L on the highway. With aggressive driving and mostly city, I averaged 12L. I did notice on highway runs that the fuel economy improved radically and quickly.

The towing capacity of the EcoDiesel is the same as the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 at 7200 lbs, but this truck gets substantially better fuel economy. For those that drive a lot without a trailer, the improvement in fuel economy is something to factor in. The already If you don’t drive a lot each year, the diecapable and luxurious sel option might not be worth the added gasoline versions cost. Verdict are less expensive Chrysler considers the Jeep Grand and come with Cherokee a premium offering but I would all the regular not put this on a par with the Mercedes Grand Cherokee ML, BMW X5, Audi Q5 or a very nicely goodness. equipped VW Touareg. It is a very nice truck with as much dieZack Spencer sel power and efficiency as the competi-
tion but the German brands have been at the whole diesel thing a lot longer and are a known entity in the market. The Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel would be a very easy choice if it were about $50,000, not $58,000. If you drive a lot or tow, the diesel might be worth it, but as it stands now the already capable and luxurious gasoline versions are less expensive and come with all the regular Grand Cherokee goodness. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 3.0L turbocharged diesel V6 with 420 lb-ft. of torque Fill-up: 9.8L/7.0L/100km (city/highway) Sticker price: $58,000-$62,000

Not a big seller in the US so Consumer Reports owner feedback is incomplete, however, the reliability ratings for Mazda2 have generally been better than average. Crash safety ratings are a mixed bag, although the overall rating is good, both side and rear impact results were less than perfect. As you might expect, being small and light is not an advantage when the other vehicle in an impact is big and heavy. Not just another fuel-efficient little commuter car, Mazda2 is a cleverly crafted automobile with a unique body design infused with Mazda’s “fun to drive” engineering philosophy. Gen Xers catch the Boomer collector car bug By Rob Sass
1964 Pontiac GTO vs. 1976 Pontiac Trans Am: According to John Kraman, the consignment director for Mecum Auctions, “Smoky and the Bandit”-era black and gold T/As are white-hot — easier to move than the granddaddy of muscle cars, the 1964 Pontiac GTO. Makes sense; this being the 50th anniversary year of the GTO, the guys who bought them new that first year are all septuagenarians. Bandit T/As on the other hand are revered by Gen Xers who grew up watching Burt Reynolds’ toupee blowing in the T-top slip stream, humming “East Bound and Down.” To them, it matters little that most malaise-era T/ As-- save for the 455-cubic-inch versions-were toothless tigers compared to the

Gen Xers are poised to inherit the classic car hobby. The market for 1950s Americana is already starting to fall flat as the oldest boomers (now pushing 70) start to cash out. Gen Xers (those born from 1965-85) are starting to gain some disposable income, and guess what? – They don’t want the cars of their dad’s time. They want what was on their bedroom wall posters as kids. That places the cars built between 1976 and 1996 squarely in the cross hairs of impending serious collectability. The dirty secret? In some cases, the Gen Xer cars are better. Here are five Boomer vs. Gen Xer comparos:
1976 PONTIAC TRANS AM
GTO. They’re cool and that’s enough. 1965 VW Karmann Ghia vs. 1992 Volkswagen Corrado VR6: The Karmann Ghia is
an extremely pretty car, but at the end of the day, it’s a Beetle in an Italian suit.
