Kinder Morgan employees, led by Western Canadian Spill Services staff, lay a boom on the Fraser River as part of an oil spill emergency drill last Thursday.

o oil was released. No animals were affected. No water was contaminated. But the emergency response drill conducted last Friday by pipeline company Kinder Morgan at the Cheam First Nation beach on the Fraser River was a stark reminder of what could happen one day. “It’s a bit scary, the thought of a spill,” newly elected Cheam band councillor Darwin Douglas told the Times. “It would be devastating for our community, but all the more reason that exercises like Thursday’s are important.” Douglas, like many Cheam band members, spends a good portion of his summer fishing in the Fraser River. Four years ago approximately 30 million sockeye

returned to the river and even more are expected this year. A spill of crude oil into the Fraser could prove disastrous for the nutritional and cultural mainstay of his and other Sto:lo bands. “We live down there during the summer,” Douglas said of the spot on the river where Kinder Morgan set up for the drill. “We camp out there. It definitely raises a lot of concern and even after the exercise yesterday, community members started asking questions. “There is a lot at stake here.” The exercise on the beach involved local First Nations,

he long-running saga of a Chilliwack man convicted of tax evasion continues this month. Russell Anthony Porisky racked up $274,000 in missed income taxes and GST through claiming status as a “natural person, working at his own capacity, under a private contract, for his own benefit.” Porisky was convicted of three charges in his 2012 trial and sentenced to a total of four-and-a-half years in jail. However, this past Monday a Court of Appeal Judge ruled that both Porisky and his partner Elaine EB IRST Gould were entiFirst reported on tled to a new trial. chilliwacktimes.com The original convictions are still on the table. Porisky and Gould were behind Paradigm Education, a tax evasion school in which they taught over 800 students to claim to be “natural persons.” The resulting total tax evasion is estimated at around $11 million. Roughly two-thirds of Paradigm students paid a percentage of their income, while the remaining third paid a fixed rate to the school, which Porisky and Gould ran out of their home. After failing to attend a November 2011 jury selection, the couple’s eventual appearance in court was wrought with confusion, ultimately resulting in this month’s ruling for a retrial.

police, Kent/Harrison Search and Rescue, the SPCA, CP Rail, wildlife recovery people and spill response experts. The Kinder Morgan employees were led by trainer Michael Locke from Western Canadian Spill Services, an Alberta company that specializes in oil spill cleanup. Thursday’s oil response practice was one of about 15 such training sessions Kinder Morgan conducts annually to ensure it’s ready in the unlikely worst-case scenario of an oil spill.

t may be hard to fathom how anyone could support an application to remove 17.6 hectares (ha) of prime farmland out of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) to build an industrial park. But what if that application comes with the landowner’s promise to pay millions of dollars to build a berm to protect nearly nine times as much agricultural land threatened by flooding elsewhere? That’s what Chilliwack city council considered at Tuesday’s meeting, and decided to forward the application to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) with support. To offset the loss of farmland in the ALR, the applicant, local developer Peter Kingma (Homecraft Construction and Wilmark Homes), has agreed to spend as much as $6 million to build a low elevation berm on the Fraser River to protect the 156 ha of the Carey Point area of the city from flooding. “At the end of the day, this is something that will be beneficial to the City of Chilliwack,” Coun. Ken Huttema said at Tuesday’s meeting. “We may lose a bit of agricultural land, but it definitely improves the quality and potential of the Carey Point lands and hopefully that puts that area of concern to rest for many years to come.” { See LAND, page A3 }

Little Mtn. students discovering the value of water APPROVALS

Little Mountain teacher-librarian Andrea Wirrell (centre) with Grade 4 students (from left to right) Wyatt Emery, Tyler Perry, Jordanna Werkman and Heaven Errand.

{ LAND, from page A1 } The area referred to as Carey Point includes 17 mostly agricultural properties of varying quality mostly on Ballam Road that are unprotected by the city’s dike system. Carey Point has long been the subject of erosion at Fraser River freshet, but flooding was particularly bad in 2012. The decision to exclude the land from the ALR resides with the ALC, but all applications of this kind are first sent to affected municipalities who then forward them on to the commission with support, without support or with no comment. It’s the City of Chilliwack’s general policy to send applications on without comment, but council does

uring Chilliwack teacher-librarian Andrea Wirrell’s trip to Ethiopia with Run for Water last month, her team visited a hospital just as a local woman was going into labour. A member of the team who had trained as a doula was invited to be part of the birth. One thing she witnessed floored Wirrell and the rest of the team. “The mother to be was very thirsty and asked for water, and they said, ‘We don’t have any water,’” Wirrell said. “Here’s a mother who’s giving birth and she’s asking for something as simple as a drink of water, and there’s no water to give her—in a hospital. They didn’t have running water in the hospital.” Wirrell is no stranger to global social justice issues, but the image of the thirsty mom and the fact that one of the Canadians could simply run to the team’s vehicle to get her a bottle of water, was a poignant in-person reminder of how wealth and resources are distributed around the world. “There, even walking with a water bottle you felt privilege,” Wirrell said. The aim of the 13-day Ethiopia trip was to get schools more involved in Run for Water, an annual Abbotsford run (5 km, 10 km, half marathon, marathon and 55 km ultra marathon) that has raised $1 million for Ethiopian water projects with Hope International since 2007. Organizers invited seven teach-

Artist: ers (five from Abbotsford,Production one from Agassiz and Wirrell from Chilliwack) to check out those projects Production Director: first hand. Back at Little Mountain elementary, Wirrell is now bringing her experiences back to her students. “It’s not only about raising money; it’s also about raising global citizens who are more aware of what life is like around the world,” she said. Since returning from Ethiopia, Wirrell has shared stories and photos from her trip as classes come through library. She’s even taught kids a couple of Amharic phrases and numbers. And on April 30, she will lead a couple of intermediate classes in a “walk with water” that will see students haul water from nearby Hope Slough with a class set of jerry cans. It’s meant to be a hands-on illustration of the challenges people in countries like Ethiopia face when it comes to water. As some Little Mountain students have already learned from Wirrell, water quality in such places is more like the stuff that comes from Hope Slough than from a Canadian kitchen tap. “The water there is in mud and then insects come out of nowhere and drink it,” Grade 4 student Wyatt Emery said. “Sometimes they drown, and then some Ethiopians pick the water up. It’s all dirty. They might get sick. Sometimes they might drink the bugs. I think that’s kind of bad because they might get sick and die.” Fellow Grade 4 student Jordanna Werkman admits to being “a little

Would be able to connect Airport Road to Squiala occasionally reject a removal application and sometimes support one. Kingma has twice been rejected by the ALC to remove this same property from the ALR, first in 2003 and again in 2012. In that second application, the property was described as a peninsula of ALR land between City of Chilliwack urban area and Squiala First Nation’s development lands. In exchange for the removal, the 2012 application sought to obtain non-ALR lands in Abbotsford, consolidate them and have them included in the ALR. Kingma told the ALC he owns arable non-ALR land adjacent to existing ALR

land near the Prince George airport that could be included too. In the end, the ALC found that excluding 18.1 ha of Class 1 and 2 farmland that is in production in exchange for 13.5 ha of Class 3 farmland not in production would represent “a substantial loss of immediate and long-term agricultural potential, which would not be fully offset by remediation of the Abbotsford land or inclusion of land at Prince George.” The current application, however, comes with support from the city’s Agricultural Advisory Committee (AAC), a body that is not know for

going easy on exclusion applications. It comes, too, with an agrologists’s report that finds the overall removal combined with the flood protection along the Fraser River does indeed benefit agriculture. “[A]lthough removal of the 42 acres of high quality farmland located in Chilliwack will be a loss to the agriculture land base, the benefits to agriculture sector and the farming community from protecting the 385 acres (295 acres in production) of farmland at Carey Point are substantial,” the report by Dave Melnychuk from March 28, 2013 states.

Director: Creative Director: grossedArt out” at the idea of drinking bugs and said people in Ethiopia should Copywriter: have clean water so they Account Manager: don’t get sick. Classmates Tyler Perry and Heaven Errand agree the way things are isn’t fair. “It’s dirty there, and we have clean water here, so I don’t think it’s fair to them,” Perry said. “They should be able to have clean water,” said Errand. But water quality isn’t the only issue said Wirrell. Having to haul water long distances from limited sources—a task that usually falls to girls—also has important social impacts. The time consuming chore often gets in the way of girls’ education; and hosts in Ethiopia told Wirrell girls traveling long distances from home to fetch water are also vulnerable to attack. The water projects Run for Water supports supply clean water and give girls a chance to stay safe and stay in school. That’s one reason Little Mountain will also host its own mini, three-kilometre Run for Water fundraiser May 15. Having toured some of the water projects in Ethiopia in person, Wirrell is confident the money is being well spent on easy-to-maintain systems that put local populations in control of their own water. “Sometimes you get this sense that Africa, is anything ever changing? Do they have the skills to help themselves?,” Wirrell said. “They do. That’s what I saw. They just need the money.”

The exclusion of the property, which is in between the urban corridor of Yale Road and Eagle Landing Parkway, would also facilitate the eventual connection of Airport Road to the new commercial development on Squiala lands. A city staff report presented Tuesday stated there is a shortage of land for future economic development. “The 2013 commercial supply is estimated at 55 ha, compared with a 30-year demand of 113 ha; and the 2013 industrial supply is estimated at 113 ha, compared with a 30-year demand of 162 ha.” As a result, the land has been included inside the “urban containment boundary” in the recent draft Official Community Plan (OCP).

Staying positive

Two trials were closely linked { TAX, from page A1 }

Future NDP leader John Horgan pays visit to Chilliwack BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com

I

t may be a dream and it may be a few years off, but that didn’t stop the provincial NDP from talking victory in the Fraser Valley during BC NDP leadership candidate John Horgan’s visit to Chilliwack Tuesday. Horgan was at Coffee Plus for a luncheon alongside 2013 Chilliwack NDP candidate Patti MacAhonic, former Chilliwack-Hope NDP MLA Gwen O’Mahony and other local party leaders and members. “New Democrats like Gwen and Patti have shown the B.C. Liberals can’t take this region for granted,” Horgan said in a statement. “My leadership will support strong leaders like them to give Fraser Valley voters a real option in 2017 for a government that will make life more affordable here.” Horgan became the sole candidate for the NDP leadership to replace Adrian Dix after Mike Farnworth bowed out of the race on April 8. Asked what the biggest mistake was in the last election the NDP lost so handily, Horgan said “not holding the government accountable for their record.”

Paul J. Henderson/TIMES

BC NDP leadership candidate John Horgan listens to former Chilliwack NDP candidate Patti MacAhonic at a party luncheon held in Chilliwack Tuesday. Dix was blamed by many in the 2013 election for refusing to run negative ads against the BC Liberals, choosing instead to put forth a positive message to voters. Horgan said he is “absolutely supportive of staying positive” and telling the story of the party’s plans, but a light should have focused on the BC Liberal record. “We didn’t do the ‘what-they-ve-beendoing-to-you’ part at all and the public, in many parts of the province, decided to stay with the government they knew rather than the government that they didn’t know.”

Horgan said that after 12 years in power there is “disarray” in every possible sector under the BC Liberals. “The public affairs bureau . . . bombard you daily with news of things that may come to pass in the future rather than giving you the information about what is actually happening: child poverty rates, the inequality that is growing in every community, the lack of silviculture, a forestry sector that is in steep, steep decline as we continue to export more and more raw logs,” he said. “Those are the reali-

ties of the economy today. That’s not the reality that the Liberals portray. In the last campaign we didn’t tell that story effectively, and we lost.” Both O’Mahony and MacAhonic spoke in glowing terms of Horgan and his role as leader of the party. “He’s a true down-to-earth leader,” O’Mahony said. “John’s calibre of character is partly what drew me to run for the NDP, so I’m delighted he is seeking the leadership,” added MacAhonic.

At the conclusion of that eventual meeting B.C. Supreme Court Justice Elliott Myers ruled the defendants were re-electing to be tried by a judge alone. As part of their respective appeals, both Porisky and Gould stated they had no intent to re-elect to be tried without jury. In her April 14 ruling, B.C. Court of Appeal Justice Mary Saunders concluded Myers’ original ruling of re-election was out of line and both Porisky and Gould were entitled to a new trial. “[I]t cannot be said that Mr. Porisky either clearly re-elected to be tried by judge alone or clearly waived his right to a jury trial,” the ruling reads. Saunders concluded that the two trials are closely linked and quashing the verdict of Porisky’s trial also quashes Gould’s verdict. She ultimately recommended a “a new trial on the charges before a court composed of judge and jury.”

An explosion of information

I

f there is an emerging theme to the 2010s, it is that many basic assumptions—no matter how cherished or long-held—are no longer enough to support our decision-making. We are faced with issues of such magnitude, whether globally (climate change, radioactive contamination from Fukushima, for example) or locally (the presumed and actual support of the Northern Gateway pipeline) that we can’t afford to trust the old simplistic, assumption-based arguments anymore. The downside of the information explosion of the past few decades has been information overload—and this has not been ignored by those, whatever their political stripe, motivated to coax us in one direction or another. Pseudo-facts can be cobbled from elements of the truth and tailored to fit pre-existing assumptions, and the combined result can be promulgated endlessly across the Internet, not just in a matter of hours, but in seconds. Instead of some basic, underlying incontrovertible truth (possibly our most dangerous assumption), we are too often left only with an impression of truth, geared to our emotions and fueled by scads of lobbying dollars. Our responsibility, no matter how we wish to shirk it, is to stay informed and examine, critically, evidence from all sides of the issues.

Developer’s creativity admirable

C

reative thinking is the hallmark of the successful. When it comes to getting farmland out of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), creativity has hit a peak with local developer Peter Kingma’s application for 17.6 hectares on Parr Road. It helps that he’s got support at city hall because the thumb-shaped piece of prime farmland sticks out like, well, an unwanted thumb between the urban containment corridor of the city and the newish development of Eagle Landing on the Squiala Indian Reserve. The city has wanted this piece of land out of the ALR for more than a decade as part of its long-term plans, which include putting a road through to Eagle Landing. Two years ago, Kingma put together a plan to remove the same piece of property from the ALR in exchange for the inclusion of some not-so-good farmland in Abbotsford and land in Prince George. The Agricultural Land Commission gave him the thumbs down. Nothing if not confident and creative, Kingma has now come up with a plan

PAUL J. HENDERSON @peejayaitch to pay upwards of $6 million to protect the 17 properties in the Carey Point area from the annual Fraser River freshet. Two years ago I walked along the bank as chunks of soil holding up sprinklers on fence posts for a blueberry field were literally falling into the rushing waters. So what does prime farmland 10 kilometres away from threatened farmland on the Fraser River have to do with one another? Nothing. The proposal is to exclude land from the ALR for an industrial park in exchange for money to build a berm that no other level of government was willing to pay for to protect the 156 hectares of land at Carey Point. Of that land, 119 hectares is producing hay, blueberries and other crops. And while it is not as if the next freshet is going to wash the entire 156 hectares away, the threat is

real. It is gradual, incremental, but that farmland is disappearing. The landowners at Carey Point have lobbied for protection for years. Others have quietly criticized those landowners for asking for protection when they all bought their land knowing it was outside the city’s dike system. Why should taxpayers foot the bill to protect land they got a good deal on? But is there an argument to be made that if the land is suddenly so worth saving in a land swap for class 1 and 2 farmland, isn’t it worth saving on the face of it? Maybe the provincial government should work out how valuable this farmland is and pay to build the berm. One of the criticisms of the ALR is that it is a blunt tool that protects land without taking into consideration individual circumstances. On the other hand, one of the criticisms of what has happened to the ALR is that tiny, piecemeal exclusions here and there erode the land bank and threaten the long-term sustainability of local food production. If we were to step back and look purely at the big picture, maybe we should have

our cake and eat it too? Maybe Carey Point is worth saving and Kingma’s Parr Road property should also stay in the ALR? There is also something mercenary-like about this whole thing. As a community, a province we can’t afford to protect this farmland, which is apparently worth protecting. But this developer will do it . . . as long as we give him what he wants: an ALR exclusion. Mr. Kingma is not spending $6 million out of the goodness of his heart. The rewards to be reaped from the industrial possibilities at the Parr Road property must be great. And in lean times, no is government willing to shell out $6 million to protect property that was consciously left outside the city’s diking system when it was first constructed. The ALC will have an interesting decision to make with this creative application. And if they reject Mr. Kingma’s application for a third time, there will be much gnashing of teeth at his office, at city hall and on the farms of Carey Point. Stay tuned.

A total repeal of gun laws necessary Editor: Re: Gun grab. I don’t know what Bob Paulson has done to fight crime since he was coronated, but it seems he’s out to pick a fight with innocent Canadians. Where is he going with this demonizing and prohibiting certain rifles that have been sold legally for over a decade? Since the RCMP commissioner is not an elected official, where are the politicians with the jam to say, you don’t get to make the rules and by the way, we’re closing your lab. Can you imagine the anger and angst of so many good people that they must surrender (I hate that word) what is lawfully their property,

with no compensation. That would include taxes paid on a $3,000 gun of about $400. Wow, that’s enough to make any red- blooded Canadian want to freak out. At the time of this writing , government has given the owners of these legal rifles an amnesty. This is ludicrous inaction because the amnesty insinuates that innocent owners are criminals, which they are not. In point of fact, it is high time to revisit all of our draconian firearms laws and nullify all that demonizes and generally criminalizes legal enthusiasts. Maybe a total repeal is what is needed. What do you think? Stu Craig Chilliwack

ACE grateful for continued support Editor: Our annual silent auction and barbecue was the best yet. Thanks to generous donors, whose names you will find on our website, the auction items were extremely popular and created excitement among those who bid. The businesses and individuals of this community are always so good to ACE for our events and because of the support, we are able to do things we would not otherwise be able to do, such as have a formal graduation. Our ACE burgers are ever increasing in popularity with sales doubling this year, and this time the burgers were cooked on a brand new Broil King barbecue that was generously donated by Home Depot in Chilliwack. We are planning for a barbecue and garage sale in May. Once again, thank you to everyone who donated or supported the event with their purchases Sandy Balascak, administrator Agassiz Centre for Education

Editor: I live in Chilliwack which has Mount Cheam and other glorious mountain views, but there is so much smog that we can hardly see them, because the air is being seriously polluted by long-distance mega-monster trucks. And, road maintenance and widening costs are escalating. All this is unnecessary. Our farmers and ALR are ruined also because they have no local marketing facilities. They have to grow hedges and shrubs to make a living. Fraser Vale frozen vegetables and fruits used to be a thriving industry but when Pillsbury bought it they closed it down. I was living in Montreal at the time and even bought that lovely frozen food there. Chilliwack was the cherry capital. Now there are no cherry trees and no strawberry and few raspberry fields. My dad retired here from Alberta and grew the best peaches I ever ate. Chilliwack had a kiwi field, but without marketing help, the fruit lay there to rot. We could have gloriously beautiful mountains and orchards if you put money into farmers’ markets. That is step number one. The next step could be to stop the trucks from ruining our roads and air, bringing food unnecessarily from California and Mexico. It is hard and tasteless. You could put money into a network of light railways. Listen to Mayor Diane Watts of Surrey and download and read the Leewood Proposal (85 pages, all realistic). We had passenger trains four times a day for 40 years until the 1950s when people started to buy the new toy— family cars. Gas was cheap then. The RR track is still in excellent condition carrying heavy freight, and B.C. has the right of way. Refrigerated farmers’ markets could be made out of railway container cars. Each one could serve one location one day a week. Any fruit or

Discover the life that comes through Jesus BY REG TOEWS Greendale MB Church

T

his is Easter week. Some think of this event as bunnies and eggs, either the real or the chocolate variety. The early church chose to celebrate Easter because it is a time of new growth, new beginnings, new life. It is also tied to the Jewish Passover celebration, which is why the date keeps moving from year to year. However, there is so much more to this time than chocolate, not that I am against chocolate—I enjoy it. Spring is life coming out of death. I garden with my wife, it is really her

hobby but I love to see new growth. We have planted many gardens in our yard. In the fall we watch the plants die and virtually disappear. There is no growth there at all. Once the weather begins to warm up we watch as new life begins to poke above the cold soil. This is a great reminder that out of death comes life. From the death of Jesus, one man, came life. As the apostle Paul writes, we are all dead without Jesus. (Romans 3:23; 6:23) Our death is due to our sinful nature. This Friday we remember that Jesus died for us. This death had a purpose. Even though people just wanted to be rid of this

Man, God knew what He was doing. Paul also reminds us that our death can be overcome. The gift of God is for each of us. It is revealed, in part, at the resurrection of Jesus Christ. What is unique about the Christian faith is that this Man didn’t stay dead. I don’t have the space to get into all the resurrection facts but the biblical account gives a lot of detail. If you want more go to www.reasonablefaith.org/proof-of-the-resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus is the hope of the world. He promised to give us life and his resurrection proved that he has the capacity to actually do it. He showed himself to

up to 500 people at one time after his resurrection. The change in his disciples as recorded in the book of Acts is definitely a sign of the power of life change. That present-day followers of Jesus are willing to die for their faith rather than give it up is a sign of the power of this new life. These individuals have seen both sides—death and life—they want the life that comes through Jesus. We live in a world that is filled with conflict and despair. Watching the news on TV, looking at the news app on your smartphone, reading a newspaper can bring feelings of hopelessness. Hope can be found in

the new life that Jesus brings. It is not about following a dogma but engaging in a relationship with a living person. What are you doing this Easter to seek new life? There are people in our community who are experiencing the hope that is found in Jesus. Find a church that embraces the gospel message and seek the One that we celebrate this week. › Cover Story “It is a possibility and we want to be ready for all eventualities,” said Rob Hadden, Western region director for Kinder Morgan. “We are confident that we are going to respond and rescue the oil in the event of an incident.” Crews at the beach Thursday set up booms in the water that would direct oil on the surface of the river where it would be removed into tanks or trucks using a skimmer. As part of the training exercise, Locke talked to the Kinder Morgan employees about how to deal with wildlife in the event of an oil spill. He demonstrated a number of tools used to scare off birds and other animals from the scene of a spill, ranging from propane cannons to aluminum pie plates. But BC SPCA chief scientific officer Sara Dubois, who was at the exercise on Thursday, said the demonstration of “hazing” equipment is only useful for first responders who get to an oil spill before the wildlife does. Who would rehabilitate affected

Grateful to be involved in exercise birds if there was a rupture in Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain oil pipeline somewhere in the Lower Mainland? “We are completely unprepared for a wildlife response,” Dubois told the Times this week. “There is no designated oiled wildlife facility in B.C.” The only wildlife facilities in B.C. are run by non-profits or are small, home-based operations. “None of those have the capacity to provide services for wildlife response on a large scale.” Dubois said the reason there are no facilities and, to compare, there are 10 in California alone, is that in the United States pipeline companies have to say what they will do to rehabilitate wildlife in the event of an oil spill. In Canada, it’s optional. “If you want to pick up the wildlife, you can. If you want to walk away, you can.” The BC SPCA is a member of the Oiled Wildlife Trust, a consor-

tium of provincial wildlife organizations that issued a damning report regarding wildlife recovery capacity in 2011 in response to the Enbridge Northern Gateway project. Dubois said the message of that report still stands with respect to Kinder Morgan’s proposed expansion of its Trans Mountain pipeline currently being considered by the National Energy Board (NEB). While concerned about the capacity to respond, both Dubois and Douglas said they were grateful to be asked to be included in Kinder Morgan’s emergency exercise. “We have to face the fact there is a line there and we need to do whatever we can to build up our preparedness,” Douglas said. “The other fact of the matter is if there was an incident, our people would be one of the first on the scene.” NEB hearings into Kinder Morgan’s proposed expansion are expected to start early in 2015.

sports End of an era at UFV as contract ends for coach

University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) men’s volleyball head coach Greg Russell’s contract will not be renewed for the 2014-15 season. “I have a lot of respect for Greg and the work that he has accomplished as a player and coach and the overall influence he has had on UFV volleyball,” UFV Athletics Director Rocky Olfert said in a press release. “I’d like to thank him for all his work and wish him all the best.” Russell just finished his ninth season at the head of the Cascades program. In 2008-2009 he coached the team to a PACWEST silver medal finish and an eventual semifinal exit at CCAA nationals. His teams also picked up silver and bronze medals at the PACWEST level in 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 respectively. Russell is a former member of the men’s senior national volleyball team and competed in the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. UFV will begin the search for a replacement coach immediately, and looks forward to fielding another competitive men’s volleyball team in the 2014-2015 season.

After a poll of all the playby-play broadcasters in the BCHL, former The Drive radio man Marc Fitzgerald has been named the broadcaster of the year for the 201314 season. Fitzgerald, who called every Chilliwack Chiefs game Marc Fitzgerald since the franchise rejoined the BCHL for the 201112 season, was surprised but greatly appreciative of the recognition bestowed on him by his peers. “It means so much because that’s 15 other guys that are incredibly talented and driven,” said Fitzgerald. “A lot of those guys I consider my friends and

I’m floored to be singled out. Your peers are the ones you listen to the most. It means so much.” The native of Port Coquitlam, B.C. has been pleased to be able to work in a hockey city close to his home and feels fortunate to have worked alongside colour man and former Chiefs forward Cam Campbell. “We did every game for three seasons and there’s no way I’d be getting this without him,” said Fitzgerald. “He’s one of the best colour men and analysts in the BCHL. It was an excellent pairing we had for three years.”

Sardis secondary grad Hildebrand heading to UFV

The UFV Cascades women’ s soccer team is looking local for a large portion of the 2014 recruiting class and head coach Rob Giesbrecht is proud to be bringing in Sardis secondary player McKenzie Hildebrand. “Hildebrand is a gifted athlete who can play on the wing or in behind a striker. She possesses an excellent work ethic, and has the potential to be a very good CIS player,” Giesbrecht said. “Hildebrand can get behind our

opponents with her pace off the ball; and she also has the vision to dissect opponents with her passing.” “Playing university soccer was always one of my goals,” Hildebrand said. “Consequently it was an easy decision when I was given the opportunity to play for UFV, which has both successful athletic teams and a lot to offer academically.”

Fitzsimmons earns Jesse Penner Memorial award

Brad Fitzsimmons (Sardis grad of 2012 and a graduate of the Sardis Baseball Academy) was awarded the Jesse Penner Memorial Award at the Douglas College Athletic Banquet, March 27. The student-athlete scholarship is awarded to players of the DC Baseball Team. Fitzsimmons is in his second year at Douglas College. Jesse Penner was a former student-athlete on the DC baseball team who tragically passed away in 2006. His memory is celebrated and his leadership, work ethic and team loyalty are qualities recognized in the young men who receive this award.

hilliwack’s NWO Roller Girls are about to kick off their third season and growth continues to be the buzzword for the local organization. The Roller Girls have announced two divisions of play within the NWO this season. The NWO Wolfpack will be the official travel team for NWO, while NWO Outsiders is the first house team. Decreasing family screen time

S

martphones and tablets appear to have staying power. The Pew Research Center confirms that smartphone penetration has surpassed the 50 per cent mark among mobile subscribers. Many others are routinely using tablets to access books, television shows, movies, and magazines. In multiscreen homes, televisions are still king. According to a 2012 Nielsen report, the average American over the age of two spends more than 34 hours a week, or more than four hours per day, watching live television. Those findings should raise an eyebrow, as health experts warn that excessive screen time can be hazardous to one’s health. A sedentary lifestyle spent in front of computers and video game consoles contributes to poor health. Of the leading industrialized countries, the United States has the highest obesity statistics, and Canada is not far behind. Obesity can impact cholesterol, cardiovascular health, risk for Type 2 diabetes, and risk for stroke. Excessive screen time can lead to sleep and eating disorders, interfere with a person’s ability to focus and negatively affect a person’s performance at school or work. Getting a family active and reducing time spent in front of a screen can have profound effects, and reducing screen time

doesn’t have to be difficult. ◗ Gradually implement changes. Families immersed in electronic devices can cut down on screen time slowly and over the course of several weeks rather than tuning out cold turkey. Start by reducing time spent watching television or playing video games by one hour per week, and gradually reduce time spent devoted to such activities in the ensuing weeks. ◗ Hide devices. The mantra, “out of sight, out of mind” can work with respect to digital devices. If tablets or smartphones are tucked away, family members may

Sweet Deal for April

feel less inclined to reach for them at any given time. Just as you wouldn’t stock your pantry full of fattening foods while trying to lose weight, don’t make digital devices readily available throughout the day. ◗ Keep televisions out of the bedroom. Children who have televisions in their bedrooms tend to watch an additional 90 minutes of programming per day than those who do not have televisions in their room. Keep the television in a shared area of the house so that time spent watching the TV can be monitored and adjusted. ◗ Establish guidelines. Set firm limits on how much screen time will be allowed per day and stick with it. Adults can lead by example. ◗ Plan more family activities. Boredom can easily give way to time spent fooling around on the Internet or channel surfing. Parents should have a cache of ideas at the ready that promote active family time. Neighborhood walks or tossing around a baseball in the yard are enjoyable activities that cut back on time spent being sedentary. Encourage indoor activities, such as puzzles or board games, if the weather is not cooperating. ◗ Be steadfast. Do not throw in the towel too soon. Families should stand their ground when attempting to decrease their screen time in favor of healthier activities.

Reduce risk of hearing loss

T

hough it’s difficult for many people to imagine living in a world in which their hearing has been compromised, hearing loss is a significant medical issue that affects millions of people across the globe. Some are quick to assume hearing loss is a natural side effect of aging, and while the relationship between age and hearing loss is strong, that does not mean men and women cannot take steps to protect their hearing and maintain it well into their golden ears. ◗ Limit workplace exposure to noise. Overexposure to noise while on the job is a leading cause of severe hearing loss, yet millions of people encounter hazardous levels of noise during a typical workday. For example, mechanics are routinely exposed to loud noise that stems from power tools or motor vehicle engines. Mechanics and other professionals who are routinely exposed to workplace noise can wear protectors that cover their ears or earplugs that reduce the impact of noise on their ears. ◗ Discuss side effects of medications with your doctor before taking them. Many people may be surprised to learn that certain medications can cause hearing loss. Some cancer drugs and certain antibiotics can cause

hearing loss, including loss that may be permanent. In addition, when used regularly, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, aspirin and acetaminophen can increase a person’s risk of hearing loss. Some side effects related to hearing loss may disappear when a person stops taking the medication that is contributing to those side effects, but that’s not always the case, so it’s best to discuss any potential side effects of medications with your physician before taking anything. ◗ Be especially careful when enjoying recreational activities that put hearing in harm’s way. Some celebratory activities are augmented by fireworks, and while fireworks may provide some

stunning visual appeal to celebrations, that appeal could be coming at the expense of your hearing. Hearing loss is sometimes caused by exposure to loud and sudden noises, such as those made by fireworks. When attending celebrations that include fireworks, stay as far away from the fireworks as possible and wear earplugs if necessary. Shooting enthusiasts may also be putting themselves in harm’s way. When visiting a shooting range or going on a hunting trip, protect your ears with headphones or ear plugs. ◗ Limit use of personal music players. Though it’s hard to predict how many of today’s young people will suffer hearing loss down the road, it’s fair to assume hearing loss figures will be on the rise. That’s thanks in large part to increased usage of personal music players and smartphones and their accompanying earbuds and headphones that allow music fans to crank up their favorite tunes at all hours of the day regardless of location. The louder and longer a person listens to music through headphones or earbuds, the greater that person’s risk of hearing loss may be. Those who want to protect their hearing for the long haul should limit their use of headphones and earbuds.

Give your plants a healthy boost Natural fertilizers loaded with nutrients and minerals

dirty product. The best produced manures are allowed to compost for at least nine months and are mixed with hay or straw. They should not produce an offensive odor and will provide plants with a host of nutrients. Never use manures from meat-eating animals, like dogs, cats or humans. Feces can harbor a lot of bacteria, which can be transfered to the garden soil.

L

awn and garden enthusiasts know a handful of items are essential to maintain a healthy landscape. Water, sunshine and the proper nutrients all work in concert to promote a healthy lawn. Although nutritional material is inherent in the soil, many gardeners feel soil must be amended with some sort of fertilizer to give plants a healthy boost. All-natural fertilizers are growing in popularity, and home gardeners have a variety of such products at their disposal. Ambitious homeowners can even create their own all-natural fertilizers from items around the house. Organic fertilizers, or those that are derived from living organisms and not manufacturered through chemicals, can provide sufficient nutrients and minerals to grow healthy plants. Bone meal In order to store energy and reach maturity, plants need phosphate.

This mineral is released over a long period of time from finely ground rock. However, a faster way to supply it to the landscape is through bone meal. Bone meal is a mixture of finely and coarsely ground animal bones that are a waste product from meat-processing plants. Adding bone meal to soil is one of the most effective ways to increase phosphorous levels. Manure The waste from herbivores (animals that feed on grass), including rabbits, horses and cows, can make super fertilizers. Some gardeners shy away from manure because they believe it to be an odoriferous,

Compost Compost can also be used as fertilizer. Gardeners can make their own compost from discarded materials. Compost is one of the most widely used soil amendments in vegetable gardens. Yard refuse, fruit and vegetable peelings, eggshells, coffee grounds, and other items can be added to a compost pile. Natural bacteria will slowly break down these materials into a product dubbed “black gold. Compost can be mixed into soil before planting and used as a dressing after plants have been established. Gardeners can experiment with different ratios of fertilizer to create a mix that enhances the soil. Test the soil to determine which, if any, { See FERTILIZERS, page A26 } 6425184

Going green in the kitchen A

dopting an eco-friendly lifestyle is a great way to protect the planet for future generations. As the “go green” movement continues to grow in popularity, men and women are realizing more and more ways to reduce their carbon footprints. While some might still associate making green strides with carpooling and changing light bulbs, those are not the only ways men and women who want to be more eco-friendly can accomplish their goals. One method to find new ways to be more environmentally friendly is to examine a favorite hobby and think of ways to enjoy that hobby in a way that also benefits the environment. Foodies, for example, can take a look around their kitchens to find ways where their love of cooking and food can be joined together with their desires to be more eco-friendly. The following are just a few ways to go green in the kitchen. ◗ Banish bottled water in favor of filters. Bottled water can be wasteful, even when bottles are made from recycled materials. Energy is necessary to produce, ship and dispose of plastic water bottles. But bottled water can be easily replaced with water filters, which filter contaminants, such as lead, from tap water to create a refreshing beverage that’s readily available at any home connected to a water supply. Water-filtering pitchers are inexpensive, which cannot always be said about

bottled water that needs to be periodically restocked. Faucet-mounted filters can be directly attached to the faucet to make the process of filtering water that much easier. ◗ Reconsider how you store leftovers. Many people store their leftovers in plastic containers. While such containers might seem convenient, even ones made from recycled plastic are not necessarily as eco-friendly as consumers may think. That’s because plastic containers are made from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource. Instead, eco-conscious foodies can opt for glass or ceramic containers rather than the more popular plastic alternatives. ◗ Feed your lawn after you feed yourself. Many people don’t like to throw away food, but it’s not just leftovers that can be repurposed.

Coffee grounds and eggshells can be put to use in the garden. You can add them to the compost pile in your yard, where items you would otherwise discard can help enrich the soil, making for healthier lawns and gardens. ◗ Fire up the dishwasher only when it’s full. Dishwashers are typically more eco-friendly than washing dishes by hand, but only when the men and women loading those dishwashers refrain from running them until they are entirely full. Once the dishwasher is full, choose an efficient setting and let the dishes air dry rather overnight instead of drying them with heat. If you need the dishes for hosting duties, dry them by hand with a towel instead of drying with heat. ◗ Rely on smaller appliances. Many home cooks rely on large appliances when working in the kitchen. But unless you’re cooking for a big group, use smaller, more efficient appliances to save energy. For example, when cooking for one or two, use a toaster oven instead of a stove. The toaster oven won’t use the same amount of power as the stove, and the smaller appliance may even cook the food faster. In addition, when heating water for tea, hot chocolate or coffee, use an electric kettle to heat water instead of the oven cooktop. Those who spend ample time in the kitchen have myriad opportunities to make that time more eco-friendly and efficient.

and Water Treatment Ltd. REMOVING CHLORINE FROM YOUR HOME Q. A.

How can I get rid of it? Chlorine can be removed several ways...boiling the water is one way but tedious. Evaporation works but takes time, distillation is another method. The easiest way is with filtration.

Andy VanEsch AJ Pumps

Q. A.

Can I just put a filter on my tap? The filter can go on your whole house or individual taps or on your jug of water.

Q. A.

But don’t I have to change filters all the time? Filters only absorb so much then they have to be changed. With our systems the average home changes once a year. (depending on chlorine concentration and amount of water used)

Q. A.

What about a permanent set-up under my sink. Is it expensive? Filtration can be installed at point of use under the sink with a separate tap or can be connected to your existing tap. Do-ityourself kits are about $125. Installed its about $225.

Q. A.

My whole house smells of chlorine, especially after showering? If you don’t like showering or brushing your teeth with chlorine a whole house filter can be installed. Surprisingly this does not cost much more than filtering just your sink. The advantage to this is that if your house is on a septic field you do not neutralize the bacteria in the field. We find the average home is only about $500 installed.

Chlorine is here to stay...you do not have to get used to it or learn to live with it. It can be effectively removed at a relatively low cost. Andy.

Good time to follow their LEED

E

mbracing an eco-friendly lifestyle is more than just recycling cans and newspapers or campaigning for endangered species. Smart environmental living also extends to our homes and offices. In recognition of that, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design system (LEED) was established to exemplify green building, maintenance and operation in offices, homes and neighborhoods. LEED is essentially a rating system for the building and maintenance industry. Established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED has become an internationally recognized mark of excellence. According to the USGBC, LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations, and maintenance solutions. Since the system was created in 1998, LEED ratings standards have been applied to more than 7,000 projects in the United States, as well as 30 additional countries, and more than a billion square feet of developed area has been LEED classified. Various parameters must be met before a building can receive LEED certification. LEED requires a set of prerequisites and credits. Prerequisites include required elements or strategies that must be included in all LEED-certified projects. Credits are extra incentives that can be included in projects to { FERTILIZER, from page A23 } nutrients the soil is lacking so the fertilizer can be adjusted accordingly. Fish and seaweed Improving soil nutrients may be as simple as looking to the ocean or other bodies of water. Fish emulsion, a mixture of ground fish and water, is a good nitrogen source. Building and maintenance projects can apply for LEED certification, which means they met certain standards for environmental sustainability. work toward LEED certification. The ratings system generally uses a numeric scale of 110 points for buildings, while LEED for homes has a scale based on 131 points. Credits are allocated based on the environmental impacts and human benefits of the buildings and operations. Projects can receive basic certification between 40 to 49 points, and platinum status is reached at 80-plus points. LEED v4 is the next incarnation of the rating system and will focus even more on increasing the lengths to which projects go to employ green goals. While the rating system was developed through an open, consensus-based process that involved USGBC volunteers and working groups, third parties are responsible for verifying that a building, home or community was created

using strategies aimed at high performance in environmental health. These include, but are not limited to, water savings, energy efficiency, sustainable site development and indoor environmental quality. USGBC says LEED is flexible enough to apply to all project types. LEED is also internationally known and accepted, and in 2003 the Canada Green Building Council received permission to create LEED Canada-NC v1.0. Since 2011, Taipei 101 has been the tallest and largest green LEED platinum-certified building in the world.

Worms Earthworms are vital to soil health. They burrow and wiggle around in the dirt, helping to aer-

ate the soil. But the castings, or waste, of the worms also provide valuable nutrients to the soil. The castings contain beneficial microorganisms from the worms’ digestive system that help break down organic matter into a form that plant roots can use. Many gardeners participate in vermicomposting, or farming worms in order to use their castings as fertilizer.

ne for you, one for me, one for you, one for me . . . That simple, sharing childhood logic is behind the growing plant-a-rowgrow-a-row (PARGAR) movement ready to kick off in Chilliwack next week. PARGAR combines the obvious benefit of growing your own food at home with being charitable by growing some for others. But for organizer Alanna Clempson from Food Matters Chilliwack, it’s more simple even than that. “Gardening is a valuable skill that all people should know,” she said. “It’s a skill that has been lost in the last generation. I feel it’s vitally important; everybody should know how to grow their own food.” Food Matters Chilliwack is the local food advocacy group behind PARGAR, and it kicks off the season with a free event Saturday at Ruth and Naomi’s Community Garden at the site of the old Paramount Theatre downtown. The event includes two gardening workshops where attendees will learn about soil health from seasoned gardener Jack Kouwenhoven, and growing secrets from gardening legend Brian Minter. The first 100 gardening enthusiasts to register in person (starting at 1:30 p.m.) will receive a complimentary garden starter seed kit with seeds to use with PARGAR and others just for fun. Self-deprecating humourist Lorne Elliott always delivers wickedly funny observations about Canadian culture

F

unny man Lorne Elliott will be showcasing his delightfully foolish, witty and thought provoking one-man concert show at the historic Harrison Memorial Hall on Saturday, April 26 at 8 p.m. Star of CBC Radio’s Madly Off in All Directions, Lorne Elliott started his career at a time when hair like his was still fashionable, hung a guitar around his neck to complete the look and has been living off the laughs of his wacky imagination ever since. Along with his uniquely zany

made regular appearances at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival since it started in 1986 and has opened for the likes of Rodney Dangerfield and Jay Leno. As well as being a humourist, storyteller and musician, Elliott is also an award-winning playwright. His play The Night the Racoons Went Berserk won “Best New Play Award” at the Quebec Drama Festival in 1983. It was later produced by the Charlottetown Theatre Festival in 1986 along with Culture Shock, another of his comedies which

Zany, silly and definitely one-of-a-kind performance style, it is the timelessness of his material, joined with keen observations of today’s trends and Canadian culture that make Lorne Elliott’s work so exceptional. “I know Lorne, like everybody else does, through his years hosting on CBC Radio,” says Harrison Festival artistic director Andy Hillhouse. “I always liked the way he would draw local references from wherever he was performing into his humour.” Montreal born, Elliott first began performing in 1974, as a folk musician, under his full name of Chris Lorne Elliott. He soon teamed up with Kevin Blackmore (aka Buddy Wasisname) to establish the comedic musical duo Free Beer. Since then, Elliott has performed from Newfoundland to New York City, from Los Angeles to Australia and points in between. He has

has been produced all across Canada and in 1989 was filmed by CBC-TV for a special drama telecast. “Lorne was the first booking I made as the new artistic director of the Festival. I liked the idea of offering something a little different in our season.” remembers Hillhouse. Elliott’s combination of dry humour with musical parodies and skits has been hailed as uniquely Canadian across the globe. Often self-deprecating, always silly and never profane, his funny is family friendly and guaranteed one-of-a-kind. ◗ Tickets for Lorne Elliott are $22 and can be purchased online at www.harrisonfestival.com, by phone at 604796-3664 or in person at the Ranger Station Art Gallery in Harrison and Agassiz Shoppers Drug Mart on Pioneer Avenue.

Maya Corn Connection a ‘fashionable cause’

A

Submitted photo

An example of some of the fashions on display at the Maya Corn Connection event April 26.

cultural fashion show held at St. Thomas Anglican Church April 26 aims to broaden our knowledge and appreciation for Mayan culture. The Maya Corn Connection program is all about multiculturalism. Organizers hope locals get involved and attend this event to help build bridges between Canada and the cultures of the Mayan region. Although the Mayan region is known world-wide for impressive pyramids, less well-known is that the descendants of the Maya are alive today in rural South American communities. In fact, there are thousands of Canadians who were born in the Mayan region living and working in British Columbia today. There is an indigenous women’s

co-operative, “Heart of the Woman” working in Chimaltenango, Guatemala who have recently joined the Maya Corn Connection. These 13 female artisans produce beautiful scarves, shawls, shoulder bags and other items using the traditional Mayan technique of waist-weaving. Cultural genocide has been a horrendous fact of life in the Mayan region for centuries. Massacres of indigenous populations and those who support them have extended into the late 20th century. Even today these rural indigenous populations are marginalized and struggle to survive. Another dimension is the oppression of women. Women in the rural regions are essentially invisible; they have no voice in their communities.

These social justice issues make it extremely difficult for single women to succeed, but with the strength of their newly honed skills and their connections to markets in Canada afforded by Maya Corn Connection, groups like Mujeres Emprendedoras de Tejutla, the seamstresses of Manos Creativas and Azul Nonualco are now selling their clothes in Canada. They have hope. It is well known that the Anglican Church is at the forefront of social justice issues world-wide and the work of Maya Corn Connection is, at its root, concerned with social justice for the women and young people in the Mayan region. Maria Ester McPherson (executive director, Maya Corn Connection) and her husband are members of All Saints Anglican Church in

Agassiz. All Saints provided the venue and support for the first Mayan Cultural Fashion Show in 2013. Now other parishes, including St. Thomas, are opening their doors and their hearts to embrace this “fashionable cause.”

◗ Enjoy an evening of traditional dance by Grupo Nahualli from Lower Mainland, fashion show, wine and a delicious Mexican dinner by Fiesta Loca of Sardis at St. Thomas Anglican Church, 46048 Gore Ave (on First Ave), Sat. April 26, from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $45 each and can be purchased at the church office between 9 a.m. and noon; reserve your seats on Facebook by visiting mayacornconnection; by email at mayacorn@telus.net; or phone 604819-7982.
