Industry representatives from around the world are disappointed in the latest rejected mine in British Columbia. However, they’re not taking it out on the provincial government, said Energy and Mines Minister Bill Bennett. He was in Toronto at the Prospectors and Development Association convention recently, pitching B.C.’s efforts to make the province more attractive to mining investment. He added delegates were disappointed to hear that Taseko Mines’ proposal to develop a copper-gold deposit near Williams Lake. “People don’t associate that decision with the B.C. government, they associate it with the federal government, and I think people here are more optimistic than I expected.” With 30,000 delegates, the convention is the largest industry gathering in the world. Bennett promoted the construction of the Northwest Transmission Line, bringing electricity to the remote region north of Terrace. To be completed this summer, the line will enable operation of the Red Chris copper-gold mine near Iskut. Of the 20 major mine proposals currently in the B.C. environmental assessment process, five are in the northwest. Bennett said one of the main difficulties for junior mining companies is attracting financing for projects that take many years to develop. The annual Fraser Institute global survey of mining companies was released at the convention. Alberta was viewed as the most attractive jurisdiction in Canada for mining, and third in the world, based on taxation, legal system and certainty around land claims. B.C.’s ranking in the survey went from 31st to 32nd in the world, a measure of its Aboriginal relations climate. Gavin Dirom, president of the Association for Mineral Exploration B.C., said the province has improved in the ranking over the past five years, along with Alberta and Nunavut.

Rural Living Expo, Trade show coming to Barriere
By Jill Hayward The Second Annual Rural Living Expo and Trade Show in Barriere is lifting off for 2014. Approximately 100 exhibit booths will fill the Trade Show hall and the new North Thompson Agriplex at the North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo facility. The event has something for everyone – a full weekend of entertainment and great things to see and do – including the annual Barriere Celebration of Art. The Rural Living Expo and Trade Show features a smorgasbord of service organizations, clubs, merchants, artists and artisans, real estate and home improvement, resources, agriculture, agritourism, health and wellness, featured speakers, entertainment and much more during the two day event, April
26-27. On Saturday at 11 a.m., we feature our own ‘Chopped’ event, called AXED, which is modelled after the popular TV cooking network contest. Join the fun as four cooks open their “surprise” basket of ingredients and then combine them to make a delicious three-course meal. On Sunday at 10 a.m., there will be a Cowboy Church service with the music of country and western singer Gordie West. He will be followed later in the day by the uplifting voices of the North Thompson Community Choir. Sunday’s feature speaker is British Columbia’s first Senior’s Advocate, Isobell Mackenzie, who will be speaking after the Cowboy Church. Then folks can cheer
Wear jeans for sick kids
British Columbia and the Yukon will once again support Jeans Day on April 24, and hope to raise $1 million for BC Children’s Hospital this year. It is easy to participate. Simply visit a participating local retailer and purchase a $5 Jeans Day button or a $20 lapel pin. The money will go to support BC Children’s Hospital, while you will gain a visible way to demonstrate your support. Just pin your button or lapel pin on and wear it along with a pair of jeans on April 24 to join millions of others across the province and its northern neighbouring territory. When a lot of people make even a small contribution, it adds up to make a big difference. Since 1991, Jeans Day has raised more than $16.8 million to help change the lives of B.C.’s sick and injured children. In 100 Mile House, Jeans Day buttons and lapel pins are available now at Save-On-Foods and at Donex Pharmacy & Department Store.
on the teams in the First Responder and Teen Bike Challenge, as they assemble mountain bikes in a competitive and fun team environment. The assembled bikes are earmarked to be given to youngsters within the community at a later date. Don’t miss the amazing athletic antics of the Beshano Bike Trails Club team, which will be performing their special flavour of magic on mountain bikes, three performances a day, both days. The club is definitely top of the list of mountain bike trial spectacles in North America, a sport where the objective is to use perfect balance to keep control of the bike while going over obstacles – giant cubes of varying height, set up in a 30- by 40-foot enclosure inside the North Thompson Agriplex. Elli Terwiel, a member of the Canadian Olympic Ski Team, will talk about motivation and goal setting. Find out what the Lower North Thompson Community Forest is up to, silviculture, and

musician is currently a top 10 regional finalist. Copely says she wants to be “the” regional finalist when this new round of voting, which started April 14, ends on Easter Monday (April 21). Fans can visit her CBC Music artist profile or the CBC Searchlight homepage to vote. All the support she has received so far has “seriously made me love my town,” Copley says. “It’s a matter of getting people to spread the word and vote everyday.” Not much for social media before the contest, which connects artists with their communities in search of Canada’s next great musical act, Copley took to Twitter and Facebook to drum up support. “I’ve figured out the Twitter language, that’s for sure.

Fire season started
Cariboo Connector Friday, April 18, 2014
Since April 1, 2014, the Cariboo Fire Centre (CFC) has responded to seven wildfires that have burned about 20 hectares. All of these fires were human-caused and the result of careless fire use. The CFC urges the public to use caution and pay attention to weather conditions when conducting open burns. As this week’s incidents demonstrate, almost all fires that start at this time of the year are human-caused and are, therefore, preventable. Spring burning can
present significant fire risks even though it may seem like a safe time to burn. Moisture is present in the soil, but grasses can dry out quickly due to increasing temperatures and wind. Fires that start in these fuels can spread very rapidly, especially when driven by wind.
Wildfire Management Branch crews have responded to all seven of this week’s incidents and the majority are now in the mop-up or patrol stage. • On April 9, 16 fire and first aid personnel were onsite at a 4.2-hectare fire one kilometre east of Lees Corner, near Hanceville. Five personnel returned April 10 to patrol the fire and completely extinguish it. • CFC personnel responded to a twoha fire on April 10 night on the Tl’esqox-
t’in (Toosey) Indian Reserve. Local RCMP and BC Hydro staff also responded, and this incident is under investigation. By this time last year, the CFC had responded to three fires that burned a total of 25 ha. Refer to Wildfire Management Branch’s April 9 information bulletin for more information on safe burning practices: http://bcwildfire.ca/hprScripts/ WildfireNews/ DisplayArticle. asp?ID=2114.

Unique Opportunity
Black Press has a very unique opportunity for the right person.
We currently have an opening for a sales person to help us with our paid distribution newspapers across B.C. This position means getting out in the community and talking to subscribers about our newspapers and working to build stronger relationships with existing readers of our newspapers. It also includes finding new subscribers for our newspapers and helping introduce them our award winning host of community newspapers. This is not a year-around position and will run from March to October each year. We offer a spectacular compensation package and bonus incentives. Your own vehicle is required, but we cover all travel expenses. This is really a great opportunity for the right person. It is a different type of job, but definitely has different types of rewards. If you feel this position would be the perfect fit for you, then we would love to hear from you. Please email all enquiries to Michelle Bedford at circulation@trailtimes.ca.

About 180,000 British Columbia families will be eligible to receive up to $55 per month, or $660 annually, for each child under the age of six when the B.C. Early Childhood Tax Benefit is introduced in April 2015. To receive the new benefit in 2015, parents need to file their annual income tax returns, starting with the 2013 tax year, and make sure they have applied for the Canada Child Tax Benefit. If your child is already registered for the Canada Child Tax Benefit, you will be automatically signed up to receive the B.C. Early Childhood Tax Benefit, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements. The maximum benefit will be available to all eligible families with net incomes under $100,000. The benefit will start to phase out at $100,000 and will be fully phased out at $150,000. It is estimated that 140,000 families will receive the full benefit, while an additional 40,000 families with net incomes over $100,000 will receive a partial benefit. For more information about the new benefit, visit: www.mcf.gov.bc.ca/childcare/tax_benefit. htm.
