Common’s Sense Peak Suburbia In recent years North Americans have witnessed a noticeable shift from their 50 year love affair with suburban living. In cities that once emptied at 5pm there has been an enormous shift to re-inhabit the downtown core bringing with it a new life and vitality not unlike what you would find in most European cities. When the Kootenay Co-op acquired the previous Extra Foods site two years ago they saw an opportunity to catalyze the same shift here in Nelson and determined that in addition to a new state of the art Co-op store they would include 54 condominium units. They named their project ‘Nelson Commons’.

Early Adoptors For Marty and Lena Horswill, both longtime Nelsonites and recent retirees, it’s the place they’ve chosen to downsize and simplify their lives. When the project is complete, they will move from their acreage outside of town into a two-bedroom, corner apartment at the Commons, where driving will no longer be a necessity. “I’ll be able to see my doctors office through the window,” 66-year-old Lena said, smiling. Within two blocks of the development site there are movie and performance theatres, athletic facilities, restaurants and cafes, clothing stores, pharmacies and banks. “If the time comes when one or both of us can no longer drive, we’ll be able to walk to everything we need.” With the Co-op focused on designing their new store bringing a range of new offerings that will include a 50 seat cafe and the BC Wine Guys moving in right next door, the Nelson Commons Development continues to market condo units and expects to start building this summer. For the Horswills, moving into the Commons is sure to bring a boom to their social lives. They’ll have friends and neighbours living just steps away and the activity of downtown all around them. “We’re going to have to discipline ourselves in terms of spending,” laughed Lena. “Where we live now, it’s easy to stay in a lot of the time. I expect we’re going to become a lot more social and go out a lot more when we’re living right downtown — we’ll have no excuse not to.”

A variety of units still available. Visit our Display Suite & Sales Office at 621 Vernon St, 12:00 to 5:00, Wednesday to Sunday (or call to book an appointment). A project of the Kootenay Co-op

News Women’s initiative seeks equitable economic opportunities throughout West Kootenay SHERRI REGNIER West Kootenay Advertiser

A women’s initiative is aiming to level the playing field when it comes to financial well being in the West Kootenay. Women Creating Change (WCC) coordinators made their pitch to Trail council last week with a long term vision to create equitable economic opportunities to all women in the Lower Columbia region by 2020. The presentation, by WCC coordinators Tara Howse and Jan Morton, was enough to convince the Silver City council to become the first signatories on a local accord that supports regional decisions that would increase women’s access to opportunities such as affordable education, skills training and higher waged employment. An advisory committee made up of local women representing various communities, ages and employment experiences, determined two regional priorities with an action plan to encourage and support the entry and retention of women in sustainable, nontraditional employment and to make education and training more accessible and affordable to women living at or below the Adoption Dance of Joy... You can make it happen

living wage. With Trail council in support, Morton sees no reason why the idea can’t be expanded to other regions of the West Kootenay. “The trends and themes are absolutely applicable to the other communities – and one of our planned initiatives related to mentoring women in non-traditional employment in the resource and industrial construction sectors will extend, at the very least to Castlegar.” A key pattern identified through the gender based analysis was women in better paying and non-traditional jobs had difficulty entering their prospective field, and retaining employment. “Women in jobs such as in the trades are vulnerable and in the first couple of years the drop out rate is significant,” explained Morton. “We are focused on how we can provide mentorship support to women who are in nontraditional and better paying jobs,” she said. “So we can work with local employers and women with experience in those fields so we can implement a mentorship program.” The women’s initiative is a partnership between the Greater

Trail Community Skills Centre and the Trail Family and Individual Resource Centre Society (Trail FAIR) that launched in May 2012 after being awarded three years of funding by the Status of Women Canada to address barriers to women achieving economic security and stability in the region. Women comprise 51 per cent of the population in Lower Columbia communities and through a gender based study, WCC gathered a snapshot profile of women in the workplace and identified social factors that support or limit economic security. One third of the local female labour force works in low wage occupations, according to WCC’s report, and more than half the women in the

region earn less than $24,000 a year. Most of the female work force (86 per cent) is employed in health and social services, retail trade, education or in the business sector. However, the report includes Teck Trail Operations, the largest company in the region, which employs about 1,500 workers, but states “most of the work opportunities are typically male-dominated occupations.” In the higher tax bracket, the disparity grows with only 16 per cent of the area’s women earn $50,000 annually compared to 43 per cent of men. “Through this gender analysis we are asking why does this statistic exist,” explained Howse. Taking into account that for every three female single-

parent families there is one male singleparent family, which can account for the number of women in Greater Trail not earning enough to maintain a “normal standard of living.” “Most of the women work in traditional jobs that pay a lower wage and being a single parent is more of an obstacle compared to a two parent family,” she said. Howse explained that in a two-parenttwo-child family, each parent must work 35 hours a week, and earn $18.15 per hour for a net income of $60,000 in order to live in the Greater Trail community. “Remember we are not talking about anything extravagant,” said Howse. “We are taking into account the basics of healthcare, transportation and child care.” .

RDCK approves water rate changes Greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Users of nine of the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s 20 water systems will see changes to their bills this year, but not everyone will be paying more. • The sharpest increase, percentagewise, will be to the Taghum subdivision of Woodland Heights, where after two straight years of user fee reductions, operations were complicated with ongoing water quality issues, according to regional district staff. “These issues require a slate of investigations and improvements for the system, potentially including treatment of the well water, that require a 45 per cent

increase in user fees,” environmental services manager Uli Wolf wrote. “This increase will bring user fees back to the level of the first year of operation under RDCK ownership.” • South Slocan will see a 10 per cent user fee increase based on capital needs to connect the last remaining properties to the treated water supply and complete all requirements under an Interior Health order for the system. • Duhamel Creek residents will see a five per cent increase, which regional district staff say will “continue the path towards a long-term sustainable fee structure” for the system

with the lowest user fees and overall cost within the regional district. However, the local management commission did not support the increase. • The Grandview subdivision just west of Balfour will see a five per cent increase in user fees to allow increased contributions to reserves that have been drawn down for capital projects over the last two years. • For Lister, the board approved a 10 per cent rate increase based on “significant capital investments” that will allow a boil water notice to be removed. The local management commission supported the changes. The adjustment also includes the in-

troduction of a bulk rate for agricultural customers. • Sanca will see a capital charge of $100 for all lots in the water system to make up for lost revenue from customers disconnecting from the system. However, for connected customers the overall charge will remain unchanged because user fees will be reduced $100. • In Edgewood, rates will be increased five per cent based on ongoing water quality issues that require

extended monitoring and will likely require treatment facilities. • Fauquier users may see a ten per cent decrease in fees based on savings from a delay in construction of the new treatment plant. • West Robson user fees are being reduced 30 per cent after three years of incident-free operations, requiring “significantly less than anticipated staff efforts.” Regional district staff also recommended budget in-

creases to the Arrow Creek water system for “urgent capital

projects” but the projects have been deferred until next year.

Fauquier’s namesake was guilty of graft Greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Fifty-sixth in a series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names Fauquier, on Lower Arrow Lake, is named for Frederick George Fauquier (1852-1917), mining recorder, police officer, notary public, justice of the peace, government agent, stipendiary magistrate, gold commissioner — and embezzler. Born in Woodstock Ont., Fauquier came to Nakusp in 1893 where he received the first of his many appointments. His diligent service was recognized when he was transferred to Revelstoke and conferred with more government duties. However, in 1901, an auditor was dispatched to look into irregularities in the gold commissioner’s office and Fauquier was arrested and charged with misappropriating public funds. “The greatest regret is expressed in town at this unfortunate affair as Mr. Fauquier is not only personally popular but has proved himself both at Nakusp and here a most acceptable and capable official,” the Revelstoke Herald wrote.

The Kootenay Mail added: “It is evident that Mr. Fauquier had been making an effort to straighten matters up as he has been offering for sale his ranch in the lower country.” A few weeks later, Fauquier pled guilty. The motivation for this crimes was never explained, but according to the Mail, “it had always been Mr. Fauquier’s intention to replace these monies. Mr. Fauquier had a wife dependent on him and also a family, and was without other means than this property.” The judge sentenced him to two years in the provincial penitentiary. It’s not clear how much time he served — nor if he ever repaid the money — but by 1904, he was back at his ranch, later known as Fauquier’s Landing, or just Fauquier. Despite his transgressions, Fauquier kept his good name. His obituary was adulatory. “Always of a bright and cheerful nature Mr. Fauquier was universally liked and highly respected by all who came in contact with him,” the Nelson Daily News wrote. “He was the most extensive fruit grower on the lake, his orchards being considered among the models of British Columbia.” The community that grew up

around Fauquier’s ranch got a post office in 1913. But its pronunciation has always been a source of debate. Is it foke-yer, foke-yay, or falk-yer? The Discover Arrow Lakes & Area guide published in 2003 suggested: “If you can’t get your mouth around the name just remember ‘Folks are folkier in Fauquier.’” In People In the Way, his book about the displacement of Arrow Lakes residents due to the High Arrow dam, James W. Wilson wrote: “The name Fauquier … seems to have produced four-letter associations in many minds. Hence the move towards a more comfortable name.” Wilson quoted a 1967 letter from BC Hydro: “The competition to select a new name for the community is to close early in July, then a petition for change of name will be circulated.” However, he added: “To the best of my knowledge nothing ever came of this move.” The settlement that replaced the town submerged by the dam’s con- BC Hydro erected this monument was erected at Faustruction was originally called New quier in 1969 following the flooding of the old townsite Fauquier, but the New was soon and creation of the current one. dropped. the S3. A smart shopper might want to wait for the R over the S. Verdict This new Golf family is set to take on some very established players in the compact segment. With a hatchback design, this car has always been a more practical design than sedans like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. With superb road manners, advanced engines and German engineering, the starting price looks like a winner. A big reason for this is the Golf is assembled in Mexico and these cars come into Canada without duty, (Thanks NAFTA) so VW added more content and kept the price low. The good news for diesel lovers is that the TDI engine will be available right out of the gate and now represents about 50 percent of Golf sales. This engine too has been modified to make it as fuel efficient as possible. All told, the Golf is more polished car than much of the competition and offers a trim level and price for all types of buyers, from basic to flat-out performance. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 1.8L turbo with 170hp, 2.0L turbo with 210hp, 2.0L turbo with 300hp and 2.0L diesel. Sonata with swoopy sexy styling mid-sized family sedan, with a full-sized interior. The base engine was an impressive new GDI (gasoline direct injection) 2.4-litre four-cylinder that can produce 198-horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. That’s considerably more than the departing base four (175 hp / 168 lb-ft) in the 2010 Sonata. It offers better fuel economy and is rated at 9.4 L/100 km in the city and 5.7 L/100 km on the highway (with automatic). Most buyers will find this base engine completely satisfies their power requirements and it’s more reliable, based on Consumer Reports owner survey results. It possesses good off-the-line power and performs impressively smooth and quiet. A green “eco” icon also shows up

Hyundai Sonata

By Bob McHugh

Hyundai gave the Sonata dramatically curvaceous new styling for the 2011 model year and dropped the V6 engine

option for the all-new (sixth generation) model. A lighter and more fuel-efficient 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder became the engine upgrade offered in this popular

on the instrument panel to reward the driver for being easy on the gas pedal. A six-speed manual transmission was only offered in the entry-level GL version and all other trim levels came with a six-speed automatic. Called Shiftronic this automatic has a manual mode sequential gear selection feature on its floor shift lever. The other trim levels offered in 2011 were GLS, Limited, 2.0T and 2.0T Limited. There is a price to pay for the Sonata’s swoopy sexy styling in terms of rearseat headroom (for tall adults). A high rear shelf and a steeply raked back window also restrict the driver’s rear vision. That said, the side mirrors are a decent size and many editions come with a back-up camera.

Sonata performed well in crash tests and offers a safety package that includes active front seat head restraints. Electronic stability control and a Bluetooth hands-free wireless phone connect feature are standard features. The Limited edition also comes with repeater turn signals on the side mirrors. No major changes were made to Sonata for the 2012 model year, but heated rear seats were added as standard equipment in the GLS and 2.0T trim levels. The Limited models also got standard proximity key entry with pushbutton engine start and a panoramic sunroof replaced the standard sunroof.

Keeping you safe on two wheels By Alexandra Straub

Like education, the motorcycle gear you wear, whether on the road or trails, is vital to your safety. Don’t believe me? Just ask someone who, unfortunately, has had a spill. Here’s an example. A colleague of mine caught gravel around a bend while riding in the States. She hit the guardrail then passed out. She was then airlifted to hospital where she suffered a minor concussion, and a few bruises and scrapes. Even the doctors were amazed how good shape she was in. It was said to her that her gear likely saved her life. She was wearing leathers,

gloves, protective boots, and a helmet. Granted, not everyone is as lucky, but you get my point. Furthermore, for those who have experienced an accident, and have been in proper attire, I’m pretty sure you weren’t thinking. “Gee, I really wish I wore my shorts and flip flops!” When I ride, I’m in full garb. Depending on what type of riding I’m taking on that day, I’ll dress appropriately. I’m an advocate of riding gear. All of it. Helmet: The government in British Columbia only enforces one piece of safety equipment when riding on the road. That’s a helmet. If you’re not going to invest any money

in anything else, protect your noggin’. I’m not suggesting buying the most expensive and fanciest lid out there because most of us don’t have thousands of dollars for a carbon fibre helmet. In fact, I’ll add this too. Make sure it fits properly. Local motorcycle shops generally have trained staff in fitting helmets. They’re supposed to fit snugly. I’ve been told that even the cheapest helmet that fits perfectly will do more for you than an expensive one that’s just not right for you. You only have one head. Use it. And protect it. continued on page 7

Keeping you safe on two wheels continued from page 6

Jackets: There are a couple of common materials used in jackets: leather and textile. There are more, but the two listed are quite prominent. Each have their own benefits. Textile jackets tend to be more breathable, while leather has been said to be better protection. You can argue each case. Some jackets come with armor (added protection in the back, elbows, and shoulders.) Some don’t. I suggest armor only because it protects you that much more. However, there are accessories you can purchase if your jacket you choose doesn’t come with it built in. Pants: Leather, textile and Kevlar jeans are common riding pants. Kevlar jeans are getting better and better as more research and development is conducted. I say, if you’re going for the “cool” look, spend a little more for the added protection. Boots: Not everyone will want heavily reinforced boots. That’s fine. But if you’re going to ride, get leather

‘‘

I’ve been told that even the cheapest helmet that fits perfectly will do more for you than an expensive one that’s just not right for you.

Gloves: There are a few styles of gloves. There are ones that cover just your hands/fingers and ones called gauntlet gloves that cover past your wrists. Some gloves also have reinforced points with carbon fibre to prevent further damage. Like with a helmet, and the rest of your gear, get gloves that fit you, like, a glove! Too much room can cause blisters. Too little room cuts off circulation. Off-Road: If you’re an adventure-touring rider – or would like to be – textile is the way to go. This material is much better for the changing weather you’ll encounter on the road less travelled. It’s breathable and generally has a few layers. So

footwear that at least covers your anklebone. Speaking of which, have you ever hit your anklebone on a table leg? Hurts, doesn’t it. Now imagine a 220-kilo machine falling on it. Think safety. What’s great about the industry now, is the availability to cool riding shoes that have reinforced heels and ankle protection. You can look good and be protected. Bonus.

you can take off or put them on when needed. Dirt Biking: Just because you fall in dirt doesn’t mean it can’t hurt! Wearing elbow and kneepads are recommended. A lot of dirt riders will also add a chest protector/breastplate, gloves, boots and goggles. Along with their helmet, of course. Accessories: If you want added piece of mind, that’s available, too. I ride with a back protector with built-in kidney protectors that I put on under my jacket. I look like a Ninja Turtle, but I don’t care! They work. A full chest protector is also available along with I’ve only scratched the surface for gear out there, but these are the basics to getting started. Bottom line, you likely won’t regret being fully suited on the road. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca

Truck tent camping is hot By ian Harwood

Camping is fun and most of us have done it at one time or another. Of course, it can be miserable without a decent tent that is easy to set up and keeps you dry and comfortable. One of the hottest products on the market today is called “truck tent.” Napier Enterprises developed it and it makes sense for those people that like to go camping, but do not like to sleep on the ground. The truck tent is exactly as it sounds a tent for your truck. This tent sits in the open bed of your truck with the tent poles (which are like regular tent poles that collapse with a quick pull) designed to fit in the stake pockets of your box rail. The tent also comes with a fly for the rain and an aw-

ning off the back to cover climbing in and out. And they have tents available for just about any truck. The cost is around $289, depending on the truck. Invest in an air mattress or you will be sporting a set of marks on your back resembling the ribs in the truck’s bed, don’t ask me how I know. SUV owners should especially like the tents that are designed with them in mind. These tents feature a docking collar that fits around the back of your sport-ute so your vehicle is inside your tent. When you need your vehicle, you just remove the collar and zip it up, $379. For hunters there is a Camo version featuring the Mossy Oak break up design. Just be careful sticking your head out the back in the early morning. continued on page 11

March to July is nesting season for birds. This is the time of year dog and cat guardians have to be especially careful where their animals go. Cats should be kept indoors during this time of year or outside only under supervision. Predatory attacks by cats on songbirds results in hundreds of birds being brought into wildlife rehabilitation centers across B.C., while it is estimated that thousands more die without intervention. Likewise, because the majority of bird species nest on the ground, dogs running off-leash in areas not designated as off-leash areas can have a huge impact on waterfowl and shorebirds. Eggs and young can be destroyed by wild predators such as raccoons, rats or crows as well as by humans but dogs running offleash near sensitive wildlife areas also disturb nests and chase parents off the nests. Avoiding these sensitive wildlife areas whether you have a dog or not will help protect migratory birds and by keeping a close eye on your cat you will help save the lives of songbirds.

Fledglings are older, nearly fully feathered birds that are learning to fly and live out of the nest. They are often clumsy and may appear to be hurt when in fact they are just developing their flying skills. Leave them alone unless they are in immediate danger from predation or from traffic. Parents keep track of their young and feed them for several days after they leave the nest. If the bird is at risk you may want to place the bird up off the ground, where appropriate, and keep cats and dogs indoors during this time.

What to do if you find a baby bird? Occasionally you may need to intervene if you find a baby bird depending if the bird is a nestling or a fledgling. A nestling is a featherless, downy, or incompletely feathered bird. If you find one, look up and see if you can find the nest - it may be in a nearby tree, shrub, or on the outside of a building. If you can reach, you can place the young back in the nest. The mother will not detect your scent on the young, and after you leave, will quickly forget the intrusion.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week April 25, 2014

Tip of the Week: The Sun entered Taurus on April 18 at 8:55 pm PDT. It did so in the wake of the now virtually infamous Cardinal Grand Cross. Over the coming four weeks the overall dynamic will take on a particularly practical, sober and business oriented focus. Our ‘business’ is not necessarily specific to commerce here. It implies whatever is especially important in our lives and there are usually a variety of fronts. As much as a practical and industrious theme is implied, the focus is also upon healing, psychological, emotional and spiritual healing in particular. Empathy, compassion and forgiveness for self and others are often if not always where to begin. The intellect/ego aspect our mind is the dividing, sorting, categorizing, differentiating and separating function of the mind. And it certainly has its place. However, when this function of the mind is over emphasized, it produces states of imbalance, separation and essentially fragmentation. The basic symptoms are projected anger, judgement, blame and demonization (seeing another or others in general as wrong, bad or even evil while blindly dismissing our own limitations, issues and imbalances and so on). So, amidst the usual daily tasks and those linked to this time of the year, like gardening and spring cleaning, this other, deeper and equally valid layer of focus is woven into the game plan for this time. Seeing healers and therapists of all kinds, opening to new, positive and empowering wisdom knowledge or at least intentionally doing the inner work yourself are good and wise choices that represent alignment with this overall energy pattern. This inner work can begin by simply saying ‘thank you’ and/or ‘I forgive you’ with genuine sincerity. Morals and ethics aside, these actions are keys to centering in the heart which is a golden key to health and happiness.

The time has come to really get down to business. By now you have probably activated a series of fresh leads and starts. Now it is time to build upon them, to take them to the next effective level. This includes digging-in even deeper. Becoming aware of subconscious patterns that are perpetuating certain fixed attitudes is a feature of this deep-end work. You are in a pioneering mood. Entering new territory now implies nurturing important friendships. Aspiring to achieve what may be deemed higher ideals is featured. While you have likely been and are willing to work hard, key collaborations will save you a lot of time, energy and money. Reach out to strike win/win deals with warm leads. Focusing on what constitutes your best and most important ‘home work’ is in focus. This can literally include you home residence. Yet, it can also include studies, self-improvement and research for important projects and so on. Look to the future and decipher now what you can do to initiate realistic and wise momentums. Deciphering who are truly the most important people in your life is on you radar. There may be more than one category: friends, family, colleagues and other such allies. Yet, these may be spiritual sources as well, Jesus, Buddha, angels…. Ideally, your focus will include your own inner power and authority as well. Stepping into the limelight is destined to be all part of the job for you. Gaining added attention from fans and admirers and from authority figures too is part of the plot. Your light will shine even brighter when any expectations are replaced with a genuine intention to be of service. This is especially important now. Put people before profits. Expanding your vision and focus on all fronts continues. This includes looking forward to future probabilities. Establishing a foundation for a whole new round of strategies and expressions is implied. New experiences, lessons and angles of approach beckon. This is a call to innovate and if necessary to re-invent yourself altogether.

Attending to financial interests, issues and/or responsibilities is likely now. Savings, earning and perhaps especially investments are on your mind. Yet, you may also be dealing with liabilities and paying off debts of some kind as well. These may not specifically be financial. Either way, you are probably wise to trust the flow and pay your dues. A recent twist and turn towards relationships finds you feeling the love, or longing to. While romance is implied, it may be woven with spiritual threads as well. Either way, there is reason to say you feel inspired. This trend will increase over the coming weeks. Though you may not go chasing it, prayers for it are streaming through your heart and mind. Doing the work to clear, purge and downsize continues. Yet now you are prepared to really roll-up your sleeves. It and other thoughts, discussions and actions center upon new perspectives on security. Sometimes, less truly is more. How you relate and directing your focus to serve a higher purpose are interwoven themes replacing the urge to acquire more stuff. You have entered a creative cycle. It will lead you over the coming weeks especially to innovate and invent. Given all the dynamics and shake-ups likely occurring in your world, circumstances may be demanding it. At best you feel inspired and confident to forge ahead. Yet, stay alert because the spark of genius and ingenuity stands to be triggered by others now. A long awaited breakthrough is set to occur over the coming few weeks. Both a deepened sense of material stability and emotional fulfillment is likely. You have perhaps been patiently waiting for this for some months now. So, it is important that you be focused and alert. This will be an important initial step followed by a series of others over the next few months especially. New thoughts, ideas and concepts are beginning to really take form in your mind. You are at least determined to consider and even experiment with them. Yet, you will have to focus more intently than you may realize to succeed. Like moving through fog you are wise to proceed slowly yet surely. Outline a plan with a timeline and watch for the signs.

G A M E S WADJDA is a movie of firsts. This first feature film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia is the story of a young girl living in a suburb of Riyadh determined to raise enough money to buy a bike in a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue. Even more impressive, WADJDA is the first feature film made by a female Saudi filmmaker. In a country where cinemas are banned and women cannot drive or vote, writer-director Haifaa Al Mansour has broken many barriers with her new film.
