Mayor wants to Earthquake responses downsize city hall

Mayor Walter Jakeway says he plans to permanently downsize city hall if he is re-elected in November. Jakeway said a group with insider knowledge of city hall would be formed to dictate who stays and who goes. “The mayor’s turnaround team would be formally established after the election but several potential members are already researching the situations,” Jakeway told the Mirror. The mayor has consistently said city hall is too big. At a Rotary luncheon one year after Jakeway was elected mayor, he referenced Penticton, similar in size to Campbell River and which had, at the time, just shed 31 people by working from the top down.
Jakeway said “Campbell River must do the same” because the city is “bogged down by the same old habits.” Jakeway last week appeared on the Shaw TV program Talk About and told host John Twigg that his turn around team would be made up of current and former city employees who would be tasked with cutting positions. “It won’t be me doing it,” Jakeway told Twigg. “But if we do downsize it will not be from the bottom up, it will be from
the top down. We have a lot of people who are probably ready to retire plus we’ve got a lot of empty spots so let’s start with them. It’s not fun, but it’s also gotta be permanent.” Jakeway said taxes have continued to go up every year since he was elected in 2011 and cutting staff is one way at reducing city costs. The city’s most recent f inancial statement reveals the city paid out $14.5 million in employee and city council wages in 2012.

Former resort caretaker gets 25 years for ‘terrifying’ murder of his wife Graphic warninG: Story contains details that may be disturbing to some readers Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Before leaving Hanson Island to meet her daug hters, Jennifer McPherson agreed to do something fun with the man she loved. But Traigo Andretti had other ideas. He had been planning to kill his 41-year-old companion for a month because he wanted out of the relationship. S omet ime around April 29, 2013, Andretti carried out his cruel plan using rope, a video camera and cunning to lure McPherson to a wooded area beside the fishing resort where they worked as caretakers. Her remains were later found by a police dog and searchers in various spots around the island, located just south of Alert Bay in Johnstone Strait. On Wednesday, in a Campbell River courtroom, Andretti appeared in leg shackles and a blue sweat suit, and was finally allowed to plead guilty to his crimes. Sporting a full beard, the meekly-built 38-yearold said very little, only muttering “guilty” to counts of first degree murder and committing an indignity to a human body and remains. Andretti also confirmed he understood what was going on. That wasn’t always the case over the past year as Andretti flip-flopped over guilty and not guilty pleas, refused to work with lawyers and was finally appointed legal counsel. However, no lawyer appeared on his behalf at the sentencing hearing in B.C. Supreme Court. Andretti stood in the prisoner’s box with his head bowed and showed little emotion as the judge sentenced him to life in prison with no chance of parole for at
least 25 years. Justice Terrence Schultes acknowledged that Andretti had been found mentally fit to stand trial, but there was clearly a “disturbance” that should be addressed. “(You) engaged in a very cruel and inhuman type of behaviour towards another human being,” the judge said. He added that Andretti carried out his crime with a “coldness and passivity” and that McPherson suffered a terrifying death. Crown prosecutor David Fitzsimmons provided details of the murder and handed over a video that Andretti filmed. According to statements Andretti later made to RCMP investigators, he was unhappy and wanted out of the relationship with McPherson (they may have been married or common-law). He also wanted to remain working at Pacific Outback Resort. The two met in Winnipeg in 2006 through a dating website. Two years later, Andretti was placed on probation after assaulting McPherson. According to a Dec. 2013 article that appeared in the Winnipeg Sun, “Andretti has a form of autism and has been a cause of concern for police and justice officials after he failed to take prescribed medication.” Still, in 2008, McPherson got the caretakers’ contract at the fishing resort and the couple packed up and relocated to Hanson Island. After five years though, McPherson wanted to move on while Andretti was planning to stay. On May 1, 2013, McPherson had arranged to meet her two adult daughters at the BC Ferry terminal in nearby Port McNeill. However,
when Andretti showed up and told them their mother had gone to Las Vegas, they became suspicious and contacted Alert Bay RCMP. Police quest ione d Andretti and were also suspicious. They returned the next day with a police dog and discovered human remains on the island. As they searched the island for McPherson, simply listed as “missing” at the time, Andretti left and went to stay with family in Campbell River. It was there, on May 4, when he turned himself in at the RCMP detachment and said he felt suicidal. He was given a proper assessment and after his release from hospital was arrested for McPherson’s murder. He was interrogated three times, but said little. Finally, when investigators said they “had enough” with him, Andretti divulged his grim story. Knowing that McPherson planned to meet with her daughters, he asked her to have some fun and express “her love” for him. So he set up a video camera, turned it on and began to tie her up to a small tree near a resort cabin. “She’s co-operating, she’s not unhappy,” said Fitzsimmons, who saw the video as he prepared for a possible trial. As McPhers on is bound from toe to head, she makes one last request of Andretti as the rope is wound around her neck, “Be careful not to get it too tight.” And with that, Andretti starts to pull tighter. He spins her around and chokes her until her body goes limp. “You see her die,” Fitzsimmons said solemnly. Andretti then left her tied to the tree as he watched the video several times. He then dismembered her, burned parts of her body, cut off the flesh
and then disposed of her remains at several locations. He would later return to Hanson Island with police and lead them to the places where he disposed of the remains. Fitzsimmons said it was deliberately-planned murder with Andretti considering a number of ways to kill McPherson as well as the pain it would cause her. He also stopped taking his medication “to make it easier” to carry out the plan. As well, Andretti was already contacting another woman on Craigslist.

Another case? It’s also believed that Andretti is being investigated by police in Winnipeg for the death of Myrna Letandre, 37. She and Andretti may have been involved in a relationship, and then she disappeared in 2006. Acting on a tip, police found her remains buried in the foundation of a Winnipeg home. The remains were discovered May 6, after Andretti was arrested.

Our View
Put pupils first in school budgets School district budgeting isn’t just about addition and subtraction – it takes some seriously advanced mathematics. B.C. has 60 school districts We say: We dealing with similar issues and a lot of trustees brainstorming, but need restraint, unfortunately it takes a lot of nickels flexibility and and dimes to dent a multimillioncreativity dollar shortfall. Public education is underfunded, but at the same time, throwing money at the problem can only do so much. We need restraint, flexibility and creativity.
We all have our fond or not-so-fond memories of how school used to be back in the old days. Times have changed. Cities have sprawled, families are smaller, students live farther apart, enrolment has declined and for all those reasons, education can’t be delivered with the same economies of scale. It’s frustrating, during budget time, to talk in terms of ‘delivery of education’ when schools do infinitely more. They’re about interactions and friendships, life lessons, achievement and growth. They’re places to pursue hobbies and interests, arts and culture, sports and recreation. They’re libraries,
daycares, hangouts. They must continue to be all of these things. As the board balances its books, children must be the first consideration and we trust that they will be. And things will turn out OK. Pupils can handle dogeared textbooks, outdated computers, long bus rides and occasional gaps in supervision. Kids are tough and they’ll accept school for what it is. We need to be tough, too – suffer these cuts, if we must, and no matter what, never stop teaching, challenging and engaging our kids. – Black Press

Closures defy belief
Filed for publication with the Mirror: Board of Trustees Coastal Community Credit Union The news report that you are planning to close small island branches in Alert Bay, Sointula, Cortes Island defies belief especially when reading the statement, quoted below, on our website. “Growing with Our Island Communities Serving island communities for over 60 years, Coastal Community Credit Union has grown to be the largest Credit Union based on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. With more than 80,000 members, 650-plus employees, and over $2 billion in assets under administration…We are one of Canada’s 50 Best Employers, and we are passionate about building stronger relationships with our members, clients, employees and communities to improve financial health, enrich people’s lives and build healthier communities.” My concept of Credit Unions is that we provide banking services where commercial banks won’t. With $2 billion in assets we should be prepared to provide service in these communities as part of a contract in a civil society. In Alberta many years ago the conservative Social Credit premier Ernest Manning established the Alberta Treasury Branches to provide banking for communities ignored by the big banks. I suggest that we follow his public spirited example and not withdraw these services. Put this matter to a vote at an annual meeting to gauge the strength of our commitment to those who live in isolation. Joy Johnston
Greatest threat to B.C. environment in our lifetime Part I
My name is David Black. I am the majority owner of Black Press, the company that owns this newspaper. This is the first of two columns addressing what I see as the greatest threat to the B.C. environment in our lifetime. I am a reasonably sensible and conservative businessman, not an alarmist. All of the information in this column can be confirmed from public sources. The oil industry wants to export David Black Alberta bitumen to Asia via tankers. Owner, Black Press Under no circumstances should we allow that to happen. A bitumen spill at sea could destroy our coastline, together with the fish and wildlife that depend on it, for hundreds of years. Bitumen, even if it is diluted, does not float in sea water if there is sediment
present. This has been proven many times, most recently in a thorough Environment Canada study published on November 30 2013. Page 51 of the study provides graphic evidence of sunken bitumen. Given that there is an abundance of sediment along the BC coast, the bitumen will sink rapidly and there will be little chance of recovering any of it if there is a spill. By Northern Gateway’s own admission the likelihood of a bitumen spill at sea is over 10% over the next 50 years. Others say that it is much higher. We are in agreement with the position taken by the Coastal First Nations that even the slightest risk of a spill of bitumen at sea is unacceptable. The grounding of the Exxon Valdez in Alaska in 1989 is often held up as an example of how bad an oil spill at sea
can be, however, a spill of bitumen at sea would be much worse. The Exxon Valdez carried light crude and lost 250,000 barrels, one eighth of a tanker load. The light oil floated and could be removed from the beaches. Even so, after four years of work with up to 11,000 workers and 1,400 boats involved, less than 10% of it was recovered. Roughly 200,000 birds and many kinds of other wildlife were killed. Approximately 1,300 miles of shoreline were affected and the fishery has yet to fully recover. Bitumen is very different. It would harden up on shore and much of it would sink to the bottom, making it unrecoverable and killing virtually everything with which it came in contact. Imagine if we lost a full tanker load. Some say that, with GPS-based navigation and double hulls, spills such as
Exxon Valdez are not possible today. They are wrong. Double hulls do not prevent hull fracture if there is a collision at speed, only if there is a gentle scrape. As for the GPS claim, most marine accidents are caused by human inattention, not by a lack of knowledge about position. All ships carried systems to indicate their location before GPS came along. The Exxon Valdez crew could have glanced at their instruments to determine their location but they didn’t, neither did the crew on the Queen of the North. Marine disasters regularly occur and a quick search of the internet shows human error is most often the problem. Undoubtedly there will be many more marine accidents in future. Our grandchildren will not thank us if we willingly risk the destruction of the BC coast on Continued on Pg. 7

David Black: I am against shipping bitumen in tankers our watch. Fortunately there is a solution that is beneficial for all concerned: all we have to do is build a refinery at Kitimat. The refinery will convert the bitumen to gasoline, diesel and jet fuel which float and evaporate if they are spilled. Often little or no spill remediation is required.
Alberta and the tanker fleet to export the refined fuels will also be considered. Let me declare my biases. I am for creating thousands of good permanent jobs in BC. I am for creating billions of new tax dollars for government coffers. I am for reducing the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions. I am for building an oil pipeline
that will never leak. I am for building a modern tanker fleet that carries only refined fuels that float and evaporate if spilled. I am against shipping bitumen in tankers. If you agree that we should not put bitumen in tankers please contact your local MP and say so. The Canadian government makes a decision on this next month.

Coast Guard fills in for ferry during medical evacuation of Quadra woman KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Quadra Islanders’ worst fears came true Monday night. An elderly woman suffered a medical emergency during the night and the Quadra ferry did not have enough crew to sail the woman to Campbell River for treatment. Quadra Island director Jim Abram said there are more than enough certified crew members living on Quadra and doesn’t understand why the ferry didn’t sail. “Apparently the ferry did not sail because they did not have enough crew,” Abram said. “The night watchman was on but they couldn’t get enough crew to sail the vessel. Enough crew lives on Quadra Island to sail the vessel. I don’t know why they wouldn’t sail the vessel. There are at least six or eight certified vessel employees living on this island.” Abram said because
the ferry wouldn’t sail, the Coast Guard had to be called and the woman, suffering from a suspected heart attack, was transported down a steep ramp to the dock and taken across to Campbell River by the Cape Palmerston. Quadra Islanders, at a ferry meeting April 9, expressed concern that that exact scenario will become only all too common with recent BC Ferries cuts and speculation that Ferries will eliminate the night watchman position, which serves as a crew member during emergency call outs. Deborah Marshall, spokesperson for BC Ferries, said BC Ferries notified BC Ambulance service Monday night that it did not have enough crew to do an emergency, after-hours sailing which she said is not uncommon. “That happens a couple of times a week that we can’t get enough crew,” Marshall said.
The Coast Guard’s Cape Palmerston cutter was called out for an after hours medical evacuation on Monday.
“It depends on a crew member’s own personal circumstances whether they’re willing to get up in the middle of the night to go to work. Whether they have a child and no babysitter, or that person may be tired and doesn’t want to wake up at 3 a.m. but
they do their best. They live in the community and they do want to help their community.” Marshall said BC Ferries is mandated by Transport Canada to have at least seven crew members on board the Quadra ferry in order to sail.
Healthy Heart Clinic. Thursday, May4x7 1 • 10 am to 6 pm Mariner Square, Campbell London Drugs River 250-286-7900
Abram said if that’s the case then “Transport Canada needs to be hauled out from under the carpet and told ‘you are risking lives.’” Abram said in Monday night’s incident, the woman was fortunate and survived, thanks to the assistance of the
Coast Guard. Dan Bate, spokesperson for the Canadian Coast Guard, said the Cape Palmerston was en route from Campbell River at 11:30 p.m. Monday night after the Coast Guard was paged at 11:10 p.m. to respond to a medevac. Bate said the Cape Palmerston arrived at Quathiaski Cove at 11:38 p.m., left the cove 10 minutes after that and was back at the Campbell River dock at 11:58 p.m. where an ambulance was waiting to take the woman to Campbell River hospital. Bate said the woman was transported onto a stretcher board so she could ride inside the 47-foot Coast Guard vessel. Bate said there are instances where a patient may ride on the outside deck of the vessel if the patient cannot be moved off an ambulance stretcher. “It depends on the con-
dition of the individual and also the conditions outside,” Bate said. “In this particular incident, they were actually inside.” Bate said contrary to popular thought there is room inside the vessel for one or two family members or friends of the patient to ride with them, but that it’s up to the discretion of the commanding officer whether others will be permitted to come along. Bate said more and more emergency call outs will likely be handled by Coast Guard in the future. “We at Coast Guard are predicting we are going to get called for more EHS (emergency health service) calls to Quadra Island so that’s something we are prepared for,” he said. Coast Guard does not charge for medical emergency call outs, whereas BC Ferries charges $3,000 for emergency, after-hours service.

Why mountain bikes and hearing aids are practically the same thing Two years ago I received a wake-up call. I was feeling lethargic, I was consumed by stress and the buckle of my favourite belt was stretching menacingly at the last hole. Though my doctor told me there was nothing wrong per se, it was obvious where I was heading if I didn’t start getting some regular exercise.
At around the same time, a fellow named Jeremy was helping us build our new website for Campbell River Hearing Clinic. As I got to know him, he told me all about his newfound passion for mountain biking, which got me thinking that, hey, I used to like biking too, didn’t I?
leaders of this weekly ride, asked me (with a straight face) if I’d be joining the fast group or the “fun” (read: slow) group. Despite my unfounded confidence, I opted for the fun one so as not to appear arrogant. Twenty minutes later I was grinding alone up a rooty, forested singletrack trail, the rest of the “fun” group
much to the relief of my thundering heart. What the..?!
If you’re reading this in eager anticipation of the tie-in with hearing aids, you’re not alone. Hearing aids are, after all, one of the most exciting topics one could imagine reading about. Don’t worry, I’ll get there soon . . . Throughout the ride I was
a new bike and a bunch of fancy gear. I now ride every week. I no longer have to think about every rock or root, I simply scan the trail ahead and my brain automatically knows what to do. I’m fitter, stronger and have much quicker reflexes. I’ve gone down three belt holes, my blood pressure couldn’t be better and I feel more satisfied and relaxed in every area of my life. I’m
up” no matter how steep the hill or gnarly the trail.
I also needed the right equipment and someone to help me make the most of it. James at Swicked helped me pick the right bike for my size and riding style, and he’s been there for me whenever I need adjustments, repairs or expert advice. If something doesn't feel 100% right with my bike,
Just as I gradually became a better mountain biker, so will you grow accustomed to your improved hearing, until one day you’ll realize that you no longer have to concentrate on listening; your brain will filter out distractions automatically and you will simply understand – clearly and effortlessly.
My enthusiasm quickly waned when I showed up at the Trask Road parking lot to discover a dozen fully geared riders with hydration packs, body armour and fullsuspension bikes that were to my 15-year-old
James and his wife Chenoa, the owners of Swicked Cycles and the
Because hearing loss creeps up so slowly, sometimes it’s difficult to notice it on your own. You need to take cues from those around you and think about the way difficult listening situations – like noisy restaurants – make you feel. The extra energy needed to follow a conversation with reduced hearing sensitivity can quickly leave you tired, irritable and utterly averse to social outings. Don’t let hearing loss turn you into a grouch! Finally, just as I need James to help me get the best of my bike, I will help you choose the right equipment, fine-tune it to your precise specifications and always be there to provide tweaks or adjustments.
Sensing the perfect opportunity for some fun exercise, I procured an invite to Jeremy’s Monday night ride – he even offered to lend me a pair of his fancy mountain bike shoes. I was ready to shred some trails!

having disappeared well ahead of me, apparently having considerably more fun than I. They were, however, considerate enough to wait for me at each trail intersection,
bounced by rocks, tossed by roots and I even took a dramatic somersault over the handlebars (thankfully I was so far behind the pack that no one noticed). And yet . . . I was hooked! I ached for days, but I couldn’t wait to do it again. It wasn’t just the riding, it was also the camaraderie with a group of kindred spirits who encouraged me to never stop trying and who didn’t mind waiting for me to catch up. Not long after that first ride, James at Swicked Cycles hooked me up with
proud to say that I can even keep up with the fast group. Well, almost. And here it is . . . What did it take for me to become a decent mountain biker? Motivation for one; I needed that wakeup call from my doctor to convince me to take action to improve my life. I needed to remember how much I used to enjoy biking, and how much better I used to feel in all kinds of ways. I also needed the motivation from fellow riders, who encouraged me to “suck it
I take it to James and know that it will be taken care of. And that’s how mountain bikes are just like hearing aids. Just as I needed the motivation to take up biking, you need the proper motivation to do something about the fact that your hearing may not be as sharp as it once was. You need the encouragement of loved ones, and you need to remember how much more enjoyable social gatherings were, and how much happier and more relaxed you used to feel.
If this article is your wake-up call, Jana and I will be happy to provide you with a complimentary hearing assessment. If not, we’re here for you if and when you decide to take the step toward better hearing and a better life. Happy hearing!

Boundary extension a City considers ‘bad deal,’ mayor says planting poppies
www.CampbellRiverMirror.com www.CampbellRiverMirror.com
Kristen Douglas CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
The city’s proposal to extend its southern boundary is a “bad deal” for everybody involved, according to Mayor Walter Jakeway. The mayor, who didn’t weigh in during the April 15 council meeting when councillors voted to proceed with the boundary adjustment, is speaking up now in opposition. “Why would Campbell River taxpayers, who are already paying much more tax than the Area D folks, want to pay another $24 per year for Area D to have sewers?” Jakeway said. “City council’s initiative to incorporate portions of Area D into Campbell River, with the main purpose of extending sewer services, is a bad deal for both Area D and city taxpayers.” Myriah Foort, the city’s finance manager, told council last week that extending the city’s southern boundary to provide 535 northern
Mayor Walter Jakeway is speaking out against the city’s plans to expand into Area D.
Area D residents with sewer service will put the city $3.9 million into debt. Campbell River taxpayers would be expected to pay an extra $24 a year in user fees for 20 years to pay off that debt. Jakeway said he would prefer to see the city extend its sewer system to parts of the city that aren’t currently serviced,
such as north towards Race Point Road near Seymour Narrows. “The city development focus should be west and north to allow under-serviced areas to catch up,” he said. Meanwhile, Area D residents Stan Zuke and D’Arcy de Hart are appealing to the Strathcona Regional District for assistance in maintaining their rural neighbourhoods and lifestyle. “Any help that you can provide to secure Area D’s future in SRD (Strathcona Regional District) would be appreciated,” wrote Zuke and de Hart in a letter to the regional district board. The two men also asked the regional district to publicly present an impact a s s e s s m e nt re p or t , released earlier this month, which revealed all electoral areas would face tax increases and a loss of gas tax funding for future community projects if the city’s boundary proposal goes ahead. extension area would be on the hook for $34 in taxes that would be left unpaid due to the loss of residents to Campbell River. Area D residents filled city council chambers last week and have presented a 673 signature petition to the province in opposition to the city’s boundary proposal. Mayor Jakeway said it’s clear many Area D residents don’t want city sewers and when and if the time comes that they change their minds, they can approach the city. “When Area D residents want to join the city to get sewer connection, they can ask,” Jakeway said. “Until then, the city has many neighbourhoods within our existing borders that are overdue for attention (such as) Campbellton, North Campbell River, and Quinsam Heights.” The city is holding a public open house on its boundary extension proposal May 6 at Ocean Grove Elementary from 5-8 p.m.

The city will consider planting 100 red poppies to commemorate the anniversary of the start of World War I. Teresa Glover, an Ontario resident, is asking Campbell River to plant the flowers in city gardens to mark the occasion. “It will be 100 years in July to the start of WWI,” Glover wrote. “To remember the men and women that fought in this war, I think it would be a lovely idea if the city of Campbell River planted in their public gardens 100 red poppies. The poppy tradition came from WWI and given that John McCrae, author of In Flanders Fields’ was a Canadian, it would be a great tribute to him also.” Coun. Ron Kerr agreed and said the city should find a way to mark the anniversary, whether it be by planting poppies or by some other means. “I think it’s important to commemorate this event,” Kerr said. “The poppy is a great idea but there may be

others.” Kerr said at the April 22 council meeting he had called the legion to discuss possible ideas and said it’s something the legion and the city “could work on.” WWI began on July 28,1914 and ended on November 11, 1918 – which is celebrated each year on Remembrance Day. The city last year gave 11th Avenue an honourary name – Veterans Way – to mark the November holiday and to recognize our veterans. Glover hopes the city will go one step further and said there’s no time like the present. “Poppies can be planted in early spring and bloom late spring/summer so the timing would be appropriate,” said Glover, who noted 13 communities in Ontario have agreed to plant 100 poppies as well as other cities across the country such as Halifax, St. John’s, Victoria, and Saskatoon. Campbell River city council committed to approach the local legion to discuss starting a project to commemorate the start of the First World War.

Ravens face tough opposition
Paul Rudan/The MiRRoR
Terrific trio
Campbell River’s Maddison Devlin, 15 (from front to back), Julia Wing, 17, and Lisa Lloyd, 15, are in Salmon Arm this weekend trying to make the final cut for the provincial U18 girls hockey team. The three are among 80 players competing for roster spots. The tryouts started Wednesday and three girls will be playing on three different squads in the four-team mini-tournament.
The Campbell River Wi n d s o r P l y w o o d Midget A Ravens played a couple of games last weekend. The first one was at the friendly confines of Rod Brind’Amour Arena as they hosted the Peninsula Warriors on Saturday. Despite missing a few key players, the Ravens limited the Warriors’ chances in the early going although the Warriors did get on the scoreboard first. Raven Nolan Fair was able to make a sick deke, then tucked the ball into the top corner over the goalie’s shoulder to tie the score at one. Peninsula then added a couple of goals to lead 3-1 at the end of the first period. Early in the second, and with time running down on the shot-clock, Nolan Morrison wired a wicked shot on goal that found the back of the onion bag. Later in the period, he followed that with another long distance shot that was

just inside the post to tie the score at three. The Ravens earned their first lead of the season as Morrison spotted Ross Rickman breaking hard towards the Warrior goal on a transition. He fired a long-bomb pass that just eluded Rickman’s basket. The loose ball caromed off the boards and was scooped up by Fair who then buried it five-hole; 4-3 for the Ravens. Shortly after, the Ravens weren’t able to move the ball into the attacking zone and the Warriors made them pay as they worked an oddman attack to find the open side of the net and score to tie it at 4-4. The Warriors took advantage of a small lapse in defensive zone coverage as a shooter got his own rebound and buried it to retake the lead. At the ensuing face-off, Morrison got the ball and took it in on a partial breakaway, rippling the twine to tie the score at 5-5 at the end of the second period.

The Ravens goalie makes a save five-hole during a game versus Peninsula at Rod Brind’Amour Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Ravens kept working hard but weren’t able to put another one past the Warrior goalie. Cameron Hunter, Josh Fladager, Kodie Borton, Matt Leard, Quinn Pedersen, Lukas Lund and Liam Rivett were all working to deny the Warriors an easy path to the net. Kari Martynyk wasn’t shy about matching up against any offensive player and created a
few turnovers. Unfortunately, trips to the sin bin allowed the Warriors to take advantage of power-plays and put a couple of goals on the board to win the game by a score of 7-5. The next day, Easter Sunday, the Ravens travelled to Panorama Arena in Sidney to play Saanich Tigers A1. This game was also a lesson in how to play Canada’s national

summer sport. The Tigers had 18 runners and every player ran their heart out whenever they stepped on the floor. The under-manned Ravens were caught flat-footed at times by the higher tempo the Tigers established. Saanich’s offence employed the pick-androll techniques as well as double-screens to free the shooter from prime spots. Cole Gent had the check of the game as he bagged a Tiger, putting the shooter on his backside and the ball on the floor. The loose ball was scooped up by Fair who took it coast-to-coast and buried it behind the Tiger goalie to ruin his shut-out bid. The Tigers won by a final score of 11-1. The Midget A Ravens’ next game is at home on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. against Juan de Fuca A1. The team would like to give a shout-out to the Intermediate B Ravens who are starting their season on Sunday beginning at 3:15 p.m. at Rod Brind’Amour Arena against Juan de Fuca. This team has some familiar faces on the roster including a few players from the Comox Valley.

Storm add two new players
The Campbell River Storm made two key moves Wednesday. Head C oach and Director of Hockey Operations Lee Stone announced the re-acquisition of 1996 forward Colin Blake who spent a season and a half with the Storm before joining the Sicamous Eagles as well as the commitment of 1996 born forward Christian Brandt from the Okanagan Hockey Academy prep team. Blake of Maple Ridge, B.C., was acquired in a trade with the Sicamous Eagles of the KIJHL. He first played for the Storm in his sixteen-year-old
season and parts of his seventeen-year-old season before joining the Eagles. In 25 games with the Eagles this past season Blake scored eight goals, and added 11 assists for 19 points. “I am very excited to be back in front of an amazing fan base and such an incredibly supportive city,” Blake said. “I am looking to be a key guy this upcoming year and I expect myself to be a leader on and off the ice and be a mentor for some of the younger players coming up.” Later the same day, Stone announced the c o m m i t m e nt f r o m

The Storm continue recruiting and building towards next season as Coach Stone believes several players could be moving on. “We lose five players due to age, and those players were key pieces to our lineup. Every year the Campbell River Community Band’s director Céline Ouellette is faced with the challenge of choosing a theme and finding music for the annual spring concert. This spring’s concert, scheduled for Sunday, May 4 at 2 p.m. meets all of the requirements. The theme, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” represents every conceivable mode of transportation from tall ships to rocket ships. Caripalooza a showcase for students’ talents Larissa MeLviLLe Carihi Mirror
“It’s better than your average talent show,” says Jemima Hamilton, one of the people who got Caripalooza, the talent show at Carihi, up on its feet this year, “It’s a great way for Carihi to showcase more than one thing.” Erin Marsh, another initiator of Caripalooza, and Hamilton got the roles of organizing the show after many years of hard work around Carihi. “We’ve been Austin, looking a lot like Jack White, performs Wednesday afternoon at the Caripalooza.
involved in the music part of Carihi for a while, and now it’s time for us to step up to the plate.” Carihi has, for many years, hosted Caripalooza with a huge amount of support from students and teachers. Kids of any grade are allowed to try out for the stage, unafraid, and eager to show Carihi what they have in store. Whether it’s singing and strumming a guitar, or parkouring across the stage, you could expect the unexpected Wednes-
day at this year’s Caripalooza. “At the end of the day, if I hadn’t tried out, then I’d have regretted it,” said Helena Beamish a student who auditioned for the talent show. She entered the audition room with only a guitar case in hand, and proceeded to sing, untroubled by the people there. Beamish says, “I’m performing because being on stage is a great way to show people how I feel when I play music, and to make them feel
the same.” Beamish was excited to perform and to see what everyone else has to offer, but is still a little anxious about it. “An old friend told me once, that if you’re not nervous then you shouldn’t be performing.” Not everyone has the nerve to step up onto the stage, but for those who enjoy it, Caripalooza is the best chance to show Carihi their talents. The students agree, “If you don’t come, then you’ll certainly regret it.”
in Carihi teacher Nic Pisterzi’s writing class last semester, a class that inspired creativity and technique, and launched us into the world of
journalism. I talked to him about working at Carihi, balancing family time with work, and the Carihi Mirror. Tara Warkentin: How do you view Carihi? How does it compare to other schools you have taught at? Nic Pisterzi: Carihi is a school that celebrates diversity and inclusiveness, which fits nicely into my style of teaching. Though I’ve only taught at one other high school in Victoria, Carihi has been an excel-
lent place to grow as a teacher. Comparing the two schools is too difficult because they both have different cultures. TW: What is your favourite part of your job? NP: This one is easy. It’s seeing the students each day. The way I view teaching and how I structure classes is driven on building relationships and community. When I first started years ago, I didn’t know this. I was heavily

focused on delivering curriculum entirely. Now, it’s different. Now I find it rewarding when I’m able to establish a connection with each student, and I take the time to do that almost everyday. This is what’s important to me and is also my favourite part! Each student has their own story, and I find it rewarding to discover what they have to share, where they come from, and where they want to go next in their life. TW: What classes are you teaching/have taught this year? NP: I teach the writing program at Carihi which is inclusive of grades 9-12. I had three blocks of writing this year. I also teach English and Planning. And lastly, I support Aboriginal students at Carihi in an Aboriginal Support Block that incorporates cultural activities along with academic support. TW: Which ones are your favourite to teach? NP: I wouldn’t say I have a favourite type of class to teach. To be honest, I went into teaching to build relationships with students, so what I teach is secondary to that. I find teaching both a joy and a challenge. TW: Which ones are the most challenging? NP: Challenges come everyday in teaching. There usually isn’t a dull moment, so one challenge I find is managing my time when teaching full-time. TW: Where do you see your career going in the future? NP: Now that I just finished my Master’s degree, I think I need to take the time now to focus on my family. It’s been a long two-year journey, but the learning I’ve done has greatly impacted my teaching. In the future, I may pursue a school leadership position, but time will tell.
Nic Pisterzi
TW: You have three young children. Is it difficult to balance your family life with teaching? NP: It can be challenging to strike a balance with both. When a teacher has a full-time teaching load, it can be incredibly busy and can certainly impact their personal life. So this is something that I strive to achieve. TW: Is being with teenagers a big contrast from being with your kids? NP: It is a very large contrast. I view teenagers as young adults and they come to class each day as I said before with their own story. I try to listen and be as supportive as possible. When it comes to my own children it’s a different world! We have three children under the age of four. Sleepless nights and diapers rule our life right now, but my wife Carly and I couldn’t be more happy. TW: How did the Carihi Mirror start? What was your role in getting it going? NP: The Carihi Mirror started as a partnership with our school and the Campbell River Mirror. Dave Hamilton, the Mirror’s publisher, approached me in search of a few passionate writers. He knew of Carihi’s writing program so contacted me. That’s where you three came in. Greta, Melissa, and yourself have shown tremendous dedication and effort. You three jumped into the process head first and we knew the three of you would be successful. We couldn’t be more proud of the

three of you after winning the award! TW: Where do you hope it goes? NP: I think that a future partnership with North Island College, the Mirror, and Carihi may be the next step. Bridging a three-way partnership where students can get their feet wet in the world of journalism in high school, receive real work experience at the Mirror, and study journalism to complement their craft, would surely make for an original program.

oie Richards, the Strategic Bike To Work Week (BTWW) team leader, is an inspiration for Campbell River BTWW team leaders. Bike to Work Week 2014 will run May 26 June 1 and Richards has been the Team Leader for the Strategic Natural Resource Consultants BTWW team – a group of 55 people – over the past seven years. Richards started by sharing her passion for biking. However, over the years Richards realised BTWW is more than sharing a passion. It is an inclusive way for her co-workers to participate in a common activity. There is no exclusion, anyone who is game can give biking to work a try. There are no limits. The participants
can ride between one or five days of the week, or keep riding through the summer or even until next year. Richards explained, “signing a team up was easy just go to http:// www.biketowork.ca/ user/register and follow the instructions.” There is an exciting new website where individuals or a team leader can enter their own results. On the website, individuals can also map their route along with lots of other biking information. As a team leader Richards gets a goody bag, which includes a BTWW T-shirt. Richards encourages all her co-workers to ride during BTWW. In addition to signing up the team she makes efforts to muster up motivation with humorous e-mails in the weeks leading up to BTWW. Richards keeps the e-mails, short and humorous and provides relevant information, like where to get free

She does not find the task onerous or challenging and, in fact, gains great satisfaction hearing coworkers’ stories. Richards always hopes in registering a team she will: remind previous bikers to get back on their bike, encourage new bikers to give it a try and show co-workers there are more benefits than challenges in riding their bike. Richards is proud of her co-workers achievements. There are co-workers that: dust off their bikes, borrow bikes, ride huge distances and find imaginative ways to transport their kids to daycare and school. During BTWW Strategic has a feeling of camaraderie and happily, many of her coworkers continue with biking after BTWW. A happy day for Richards is when she looks out

LNG site needs cleaning up; tidal power is possible too Paul Rudan Campbell RiveR miRRoR
As the province pushes for an energy-driven economy, here’s a question Campbell River residents can debate:
What will the city see first, an LNG plant at the old Elk Falls mill site or tidal power generation in Discovery Passage and Seymour Narrows? There’s always the possibility that neither will
be built, but two separate companies have begun lengthy processes to bring both to Campbell River. Quicksilver Resources bought the former mill lands – more than 400 acres – last year, renamed it Discovery LNG, and is in the process of cleaning up the industrial site. The company is currently
advertising for student labourers to work at the site from May to August. The long-term plan is to build an LNG (liquefied natural gas) plant and use the deep-water port to ship energy to Asia. But for that to occur, a bigger gas line needs to come across the Strait of Georgia and up Vancouver Island; the

current line cannot carry enough capacity to support an LNG plant. And, pre su mably, Quicksilver is seeking investors for a project that would cost billions. Just offshore from the mill site, and a little further north of the city, is Seymour Narrows where strong tides and currents can reach up to 14 knots. It’s here and at the south end of nearby Discovery Passage that will be the focus of SRM Projects’ “investigation activities” for the next few years. The small Nanaimobased firm, headed by engineer Scot Merriam, has received approvals from various provincial and federal ministries to further investigate tidal power potential in these two areas. “We are excited to embark on these tidal e n e r g y a s s e s s m e nt activities and work with the City of Campbell River, Rivercorp, local First Nations, the Strathcona Regional District, Quadra Island residents and other stakeholders as we move cautiously forward,” Merriam wrote on the company’s website

continuing talks with government and local First Nations regarding the Discovery Passage and Seymour Narrows locations. The plan for this year is to conduct field surveys to observe tidal action at normal and extreme tides, as well as commercial, recreational and cultural/heritage use assessments. SRM Projects will also build on the city’s earlier investigative work evaluating the potential for generating power from a small tidal energy converter located off Discovery Pier. Other investigative work, including environmental assessments and more detailed current measurements at high potential areas, will be completed between 2015-’18. In the meantime, as both companies continue investigating the potential opportunities, BC Hydro will spend around $1 billion to rebuild Campbell River’s John Hart Generating System. That project is guaranteed to begin this year and wrap up by 2018.

After consultations with First Nations and a public meeting, SRM Projects got the message loud and clear the passage is a critical area for northern resident killer whales, listed as a species at risk. However, Merriam will continue to look for suitable locals in and around Johnstone Strait. “SRM Projects and Orcalab have committed to trading knowledge about clean ocean energy technologies and marine mammals…to look for ways we can coexist with nature and avoid negative impacts,” wrote Merriam. “Our goal is simply to earn trust and cultivate support for the renewable energy work…” The company is also

THE HISTORY OF THE CAMPBELL RIVER AREA
Sointula gillnet rugs weave their way into history BETH BOYCE MUSEUM AT CAMPBELL RIVER
I
n the current temporary exhibit at the Museum at Campbell River, Threads Through Time, A Coastal Textile History, there are many remarkable historic and contemporary works by local artists on display. One of the most intriguing textiles being shown is the rugs that are made in Sointula. Only a few industrious women make these unique pieces, and what makes these rugs incredible is the material they are made from: old used salmon gill nets. It would appear that the settlers to Sointula had an affinity for gill nets, as the Gill Net Drum was also invented by a Finnish resident of Sointula. In the 1950s, a new arrival to Sointula from Finland, Helmi Pakkalen, noticed that there were many old discarded gill nets lying about. Never one to waste useful materials, she made several attempts to determine the best use for the old nets, and the eventual result was the Gill Net Rug. These rugs will wear forever, are machine washable, and come in a variety of colours depending upon the initial colour and age of the net. Helmi taught others the art of making the rugs and they are still being made today, although there are few who make them. The best web for making the rugs is made from several strands of nylon plied together in the style of the old nets, but today it is difficult to find old nets, and as the

rug makers will tell you, “you can’t find them at Michaels.” As a result, the material gill nets have been made from has changed over time as today’s nets are made from only a single ply of nylon. Two of the women still making the rugs today are featured in the Museum’s exhibit: Heather Orr Lansdowne and Wendy Davis. Both women are residents of Sointula, the only place where one can find the rugs for sale. When talking about the rugs and the nets used to make them, both women commented on how the history of the net is a large part of each rug. Heather noted that the nets are over 40 years old before they are made into the rugs. “They have been on the cork

and lead lines, they have been on the drums, and they have
been in the ocean.” Wendy mentioned that each

net has a story; the story of who owned them and of where they were used. As a way of honouring a net’s history, both Wendy and Heather say that it is important to them to give the original owner a rug produced from their own net. The rugs come in a remarkable array of colours depending upon where the net was being used for fishing; from the dark green of Smith Inlet, to the pale blues and creams of Bella Coola. The rugs age well, and will slowly fade in the sun. They can still be found on porches and in doorways of many of the old houses on Sointula. Like many of the coastal textiles on exhibit at the Museum, they are a testament to the inventiveness of their creators, who have produced items that are at once beautiful and functional.

Hundreds of health workers vote on strike action Paul Rudan
CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
More than 400 local health care workers took a strike vote Thursday at the Anchor Inn. The 270 employees from Campbell River Hospital and another 170 at Yucalta Lodge were urged to vote “yes” to a strike by the Health Employees Union (HEU). The HEU represents about 85 per cent of the 47,000 unionized workers who belong to the 11-union Facilities Bargaining Association. Their contract with the province expired March 31, but they’ve been negotiating since Jan. 14. However, the association’s chief negotiator said talks have stalled and that’s the reason for the strike vote. “Health employers’ demands for more contracting out will cause uncertainty and instability in our hospitals, care facilities and in the community,” said Bonnie Pearson, in a news release. Job security, wages and benefits are the issues. The bargaining unit includes care aides, ambulance paramedics, health records staff, lab and other diagnostic specialists, sterile supply techs, emergency dispatchers, nursing unit clerks, trades and maintenance workers, activity aides and rehab assistants, IT specialists, pharmacy techs, admitting and booking clerks, administrative staff, cleaning and dietary staff, and others.

There may be a fix in sight for Willow Point residents who complain of poor cell phone coverage in the area. Telus told city council last week that Campbell River has been selected as a pilot community for new small cell technology that improves wireless coverage and capacity. Telus representative Michael Walsh said the technology, known as a micro site, will likely be deployed just north of Willow Point Park on already existing infrastructure, eliminating the need to build a new tower in the park – a proposal council opposed last summer. “Council decided not to enter into an agreement with us to lease

a cell phone tower in a community park asked Walsh whether the small cells meet Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 which regulate the amount of radio frequency waves that can be emitted without compromising human health. “When we talk about RF (radio frequency) signals coming off it, is it less than what you’d see coming off a macro tower?” Samson wanted to know. Walsh said yes, and that the small cells do meet Safety Code 6 standards. “It is less than a macro tower,” Walsh said. “It covers a smaller geographical area so the power output is less.” Telus said during its council presentation that it is planning to install the small cell technology in late May with the equipment going on-air in early July. It’s expected to cover 50 locations inWillow Point.

Cornfield, Heather Elizabeth (Mackay) July 7, 1952 – April 11, 2014
:PVS $PNNVOJUZ :PVS $MBTTJmFET
Baskin, Chester Thomas "Butch"
Heather passed away peacefully at home with husband, Charlie and daughter, Kim by her side, following a lengthy battle with cancer. Heather was an inspiration to others, displaying dignity, grace, courage and strength, as she approached life's most challenging situation. She never complained and always maintained her sense of humour, beautiful smile and a very positive outlook stating "It is what it is and we will just make the best of it." She is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Charlie; son, Matthew; daughter, Kim; brother, Ian Mackay (Dawn); her sisters-in-law, Margaret Angus (Don) and Bunny Carey (Donald) as well as her nieces and nephews, Meaghan, Scott, Ryan, Poppy, Linda, Paul and John and numerous cousins and other "family". Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Heather grew up in Toronto, Regina, Red Deer (Penhold) and Victoria, where she graduated from Esquimalt High School in 1970.  After marrying the love of her life, Charlie in 1972 they embarked on an adventure that took them to Vancouver, Williams Lake, Kamloops and Langley. In 1991 they arrived and fell in love with what would become their true home, Campbell River. It was here that Heather settled down to raise her wonderful family and build many lasting friendships. She was a rare and special person with her passion and care for others experienced by many through her involvement with the Association for Community Living, serving on the board as director including as President. She advocated for all people with special needs in a quiet and gentle way of making each and every person feel very special and important. She touched the lives of everyone she met and excelled managing the M&M Meat Shops, where customers, suppliers and contractors were more than clients, they became friends. She was a true lady and will not soon be forgotten. We wish to express our deepest thanks to the myriad of family and friends for their help and support, her dedicated and caring doctors, nurses and health care professionals and staff at the Hospital, the Campbell River Hospital’s Cancer Care Clinic, Palliative Care Home Nursing and Home Support, as well as Alder Medical Clinic, and Evergreen Pharmacy. A celebration of Heather’s life will be held on Thursday, May 1st at 1:00 p.m. at the Maritime Heritage Centre in Campbell River. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Campbell River Hospital Foundation in memory of Heather Cornfield for the Cancer Care Clinic. Listen quietly and watch with open eyes, for angels walk among us. I know this to be true because I met you.
Born in Edmonton, AB, Peggy was the great-granddaughter of Robert Tomlinson, Medical Missionary on the Nass River, Cedervale and Kincolith. Peggy is survived by her loving husband Alvin; son Rob (Teresa); daughters Diane (Michael) and Lin (Ed); grandchildren Alek, Halyna, Kate, Dillon, Cassie, Liam and Chase and sister Judy Degerness and brother John (Carell) Johnson. She will be remembered for her countless hours of volunteer work with the Campbell River Curling Club and local golf clubs. Peggy was instrumental in establishing the women’s golf league at Pacific Playgrounds. Another cause that was close to Peggy’s heart was YANA (You are not alone). Peggy’s family would also like to thank Dr. Penhall and the wonderful nursing staff on the third floor of CR Hospital for their compassion and support during Peggy’s illness. In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice or volunteer your time to a local organization or charity.
