School wants field damage to stop Devon MacKenzie News staff
School administrators are appealing to the public for information after damage was done to the playing fields at LÁU,WEL,NEW School over the Easter long weekend. Over the last few years, the field at the back of the school off West Saanich Road has been the target of vandalism. “People have come in and driven around on the playing field once a year or so for the past three years,” explained LÁU,WEL,NEW School Board Administrator Curtis Olsen. “We’ve made reports to the police but since it’s such a secluded area back there we rarely get any information or leads on who does this. It’s really unfortunate.” The most recent damage was done over the Easter long weekend on either the Friday or Saturday night. Olsen said he suspects someone driving a lifted 4x4 vehicle drove up a steep embankment in order to gain access to the field which has only one vehicle access point that is kept closed with chain link fencing. By the time the weekend was over, more than 1,500 people were expected to have walked into the Mary Winspear Centre for a huge arts and crafts show. The 61st annual Saanich Peninsula Arts and Crafts Society event is a showcase of work from artists from south of the Malahat, to the Saanich Peninsula and from the Gulf Islands. Show Convenor Donna Jean, who has been with
the event for six years (and a member artist for seven), says the Arts and Crafts Exhibition gives the community access to local artists’ work. The weekend exhibit had no less than 360 hanging works of art, plus tables containing even more. Member artists gave demonstrations and guest sculptor Andreas von Zadora-Gerlof presented his gem creations on the main stage. “This is a venue for members to sell their art,” Jean said, adding judges from the Society volunteer to award
top marks to pieces in a variety of categories. There are around 290 members in SPAC (www.spacsociety.com), Jean said, and they pay a $20 hanging fee to get into the show — making it affordable to members. They had to be fully paid members as of Dec. 31 to qualify for the big exhibition. “The Mary Winspear Centre,” Jean continued, “is a nice place that reaches a lot of people. SOS group to act as task force watchdogs As Mayor’s task force on downtown Sidney starts, the SOS keeps rolling Steven Heywood News staff
Organizers of the new Save Our Sidney working group on the future of downtown commercial fortunes, says they hope to act as watchdogs of the Mayor’s Task Force on Downtown Revitalization. More than 50 people expressed an interest to be part of SOS following a public presentation by Sidney business owner Garry Froese and international retail consultant Richard Talbot earlier this month. The presentation, Talbot’s third, outlined the threats to downtown Sidney’s commercial viability in the face of proposed large retail developments in Central and North Saanich — and step to take to retain and attract customers. Steve Duck of the TIDES Group, facilitator of the April 9 presentation, says residents and business
owners alike hope to see results from task force meetings. The task force, created by Mayor Larry Cross, met for the first time April 24 to outline its direction. “I anticipate this to be a community-based watchdog,” Duck said, “to make sure something comes out of the task force, especially with a united front.” Duck has been working closely with the Sidney Tourism Improvement Group (STIG) which has lobbied the Town for changes to the traffic flow on Beacon Avenue and local tourist signage. With traffic off the table for the task force, Duck said he hopes it looks at the bigger picture of downtown Sidney and doesn’t disregard any ideas that come forward. “Jesken and Sandown will come,” Duck said of the two commercial projects in the works. “They will bring peo-

Along with what the Sidney Business Improvement Group is doing, there will be three groups marketing the Peninsula, hoping to attract people to come here.” Duck said he hopes the task force, which does not include any representatives from STIG or SOS, brings people together — including local experts — on this common ground. “The task force needs the opportunity to do a good job. They
also need to engage the public right from the start, not at the end.” In the end, any suggestions the task force amass will require the political will to make them happen. “We shouldn’t fear Sandown or Jesken. We should fear ourselves. We are responsible for our own successes or failures.” Duck said the SOS working group will host another presentation on May 7. Talbot, who remains involved with SOS, said the plan is to hold monthly meetings
to review the “output and direction of the Dickinson Task Force” — in reference to its chair, Mark Dickinson. In an email to the PNR, Talbot said the guest speaker at its May 7 meeting will be Jan Egil Gulbrandsen. He is a Norwegian entrepreneur, co-founder of the Europris chain of general merchandise stores. He is set to talk about lessons learned from operating small stores and strategies to revitalizing downtown Sidney. The presentation will

That is certainly something to keep an eye on. So is the status of B.C. farms, where the average farmer age is 56 and rising, and half of farms have income less than $10,000 a year. LETTERS Chainsaw approach to development in North Saanich Letters to the Editor A s a resident of North Saanich I am troubled about the rhetoric surrounding proposed urbanization/densification initiatives and the process of adopting them. In terms of how densification is being discussed there is, in my opinion, a chorus who paint it as addressing admirable objectives including: affordable housing, work force housing, the environment, grandparents, their children and single parents. A rezoning may or may not support these objectives but my issue is that those who do not rally behind it are painted as people who support dying communities, want to
shut the door on others from living here and don’t support families or the environment. What I find most disconcerting is the generalized negative labeling of those who query, question or wish to pause or see clarification on a development initiative. It reminds me of George Bush’s approach where an individual is defined as being either with you or if they are not, they are against you. I believe the majority who speak out against and in support actually share similar values. But in the current poisoned environment there can’t be and hasn’t been a true and meaningful dialogue on

invites discussions is truly a sure sign of a healthy community and one which I believe all North Saanich residents seek and should be embraced by their elected councilors. If these proposals are implemented, areas demarked in the broad-brush boundaries will be open for densification and rezoning. Neighbors may decide to join their lots for rezoning and their immediate neighbours may wish to retain the rural character they valued. The potential for conflict within these areas is real. This schism and divide in the
community has occurred because the process is flawed. Asking for consultation, discussion, understanding and planning is not a sign of opposition to a healthy and thriving community. In fact it is the reverse. The process of looking at how we can best support affordable workforce housing, which supports families, single parents and low wage earners has been achieved by using a chainsaw approach rather than what could be accomplished more strategically with a pair of thoughtful scissors. Yuk Yuk’s has been a staple in the Canadian comedy scene since 1976. MYERSCOUGH, Jean October 14, 1937 - April 14, 2014 MYERSCOUGH, Frances Jean After living a full life, the last 7 years with cancer, our beloved Jean died on April 14. Surrounded by her family. Born October 14th, 1937, to Frank & Elsie Kerr at Blundellsands, Liverpool, U.K., Jean survived the blitz bombings of Liverpool in WWII. Educated at Merchant Taylor’s School for Girls, and later Manchester College, Jean studied home economics, before becoming a Member of the Institutional Management Association of Great Britian. In 1960, Jean married her soul mate and best friend David Lloyd Myerscough. Jean and David had met in kindergarten, where Jean taught David how to tie his shoes. In 1962, their first son, Ian David was born in Liverpool. In 1964, the family was accepted to immigrate to either Canada or Australia. A letter from a close friend describing the natural beauty of British Columbia and opportunities available to new immigrants convinced them to cross the seas to Canada. Sight unseen, Jean and family arrived in Vancouver in 1964 to start their new life. A second son, Richard Kerr was born in 1965. In 1966, the family moved to Sidney on Vancouver Island where they immersed themselves in the beautiful marine surroundings. Constantly on the water in various craft, the family sailed, fished and island hopped, especially to Sidney Spit for beach barbecues. At her waterfront home on Roberts Bay, Jean was known for using a very loud air horn to call her sons from rowing, sailing or running wild on the beach. In the early 1970’s, Jean and husband David founded the Saanich Peninsula Sailing Association. From this small local club, 2 sailors went on to represent Canada in the Olympics. Jean organized regular dinghy racing and the popular Sidney Regatta. In the mid 1970’s the sailing club built a boat storage compound and boat ramp at Tulista Park. The ramp continues today as the popular Sidney Anglers ramp lays on top of the original. It was Jean and David who identified this dredged location next to the Ferry as the only place close to Sidney you could ramp launch a boat at low tide. Weekly sailing club meetings were always held at the Myerscough house on Roberts Bay, with Jeans baking being the major draw. Jean was so proud of her two sons, with Ian excelling in marathon running, competing in events such as the Boston Marathon, and Richard with his windsurf racing, eventually becoming an Olympian in 1988 at Seoul. Jean loved gardening and her flowers and arrangements were always incredible and could be seen weekly at St. Andrew’s Church where she was part of the altar guild. She was a natural artisit, especially drawing and cross stitching original tapestries that her family hold dear, as well as creating stunning calligraphy. Jean also authored and illustrated a children’s book when her grandchildren were born. Jean volunteered for many years with the Canadian Cancer Society. St. Andrew’s Church, Sidney, and the Strata Council of Resthaven by the Sea. Jean enjoyed travelling throughout North America, Central America, Europe, small parts of North Africa and U.K. which she and David did as often as possible once he retired. Jean leaves behind husband David of 54 years, sons Ian & Richard; sister Heather (Dr. Don Treble and family, Albany, NY); daughter-in-law Laurie Anne; her four dearly loved grandchildren; Scott, Becky, Reece and Ana; sister-in-law Sue Myerscough; two nieces, Alison & Katherine, as well as cousins and friends in the U.K. and Canada. Many thanks to Dr. Darren Biberdorf. Dr. Andrew Atwell and his team at Victoria Cancer Clinic for their kindness and care, and to Dr. Myra Lynch and all the nurses, caregivers of the ERT. Sincere thank to Dr. Forester, the nurses, caregivers and volunteers at the Paliative Care Unit of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital; Thanks also to Rev. Osita Oluigbo, The Altar Guild and congregation of St. Andrew’s Church, Sidney for all their prayers. At Jean’s request, there will be a private family service, at a later date. Carnation Campaign helps make a difference Kyle Wells, News staff One can learn a lot about multiple sclerosis by stopping to talk to volunteers running Carnation Campaign stations around Greater Victoria on Mother’s Day weekend. Brianna Perry has been volunteering about 13 years with the MS Society of Canada and for the past two years has organized a carnation event in Vic West at Westside Village. Perry’s mother, Barri Ann Perry, lived with MS for 13 before it took her life in January 2013. Together, mother and daughter volunteered for the MS Society at events such as the Carnation Campaign, until Barri’s health prevented her from participating. “(I’m) just kind of paying it forward to the MS Society for being so good to my mom,” Perry said. “It is a really fun event.” Sometimes people don’t really acknowledge you or they just keep on walking past MS Society volunteer stands, she said. Those who do so are missing out on an opportunity to gain some awareness and help make a real difference in people’s lives, Perry said. She encourages people to stop by, ask questions, learn something about where the money goes and make a donation, should they choose to. Half of the donations go to the local chapter of the MS Society to help caregivers cover the costs of looking after a loved one. The other half goes towards research into prevention, treatment and finding a cure. The other piece of the puzzle is how important these services are to families who have members struggling with the disease, which affects an estimated 100,000 Canadians and has no cure. “It effects everybody differently,” Perry said. “I could have MS right now and not even know, versus the person like my mom, where her MS just progressed really quick and she
