Tree protection an issue outside Brookswood too, says resident DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter
Large old trees deserve to be protected outside Brookswood, according to a Langley Township couple who live in a rural area near Aldergrove and were unhappy to discover three towering evergreens have been cut down in their neighbourhood. Jim Davis said the trees, around the corner from their house in the area of 240 Street and 63 Avenue, were the tallest on the block, several times the height of subdivision homes in their shadow. “You can’t put your arm around [those trees],” Davis said. “You don’t grow them overnight.” Loraine Davis said she knew the trees well because she grew up on the farm where they were planted, which has now become a residential devel-
opment. Davis said her parents were told the trees were a kind of unofficial war memorial, planted some time after the First World War, but they were never able to learn more and the site does not appear to have been registered. On Tuesday (April 29), when Davis visited the location with a Times reporter, a crew was chopping a thick tree trunk into firewood and grinding down a stump below ground level. “To me, it’s stupidity,” Davis said. “The beauty of the municipality is green-ness.” When he called the Township, Davis said he was told the municipality had no power to regulate tree-cutting because the area was within the provincial Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and under the authority of the Agri-

cultural Land Commission (ALC), not the Township. However, a Times examination of an online ALC map appears to show the property in question is just outside the ALR. Davis said he supports some form of tree protection regulation that would protect older, larger trees, one that would allow property owners to cut down smaller “scrub trees” without a permit. He thinks the Township should extend its just-approved interim ban on clear-cutting in Brookswood to include the rest of the Langley. “It should be the whole bloody district,” Davis said. School district facing deficit next year MO N I Q U E TA M M I N G A Ti me s Re po r t e r
School closures, staff reductions, program cuts or consolidation as well as reducing supplies are all being looked at for ways to balance next year’s Langley School District budget. At the Tuesday Board of Education meeting, secretary-treasurer David Green provided a preliminary 2014-2015 budget that shows the district will face a $3.3 million shortfall. “School closures are not something we can look at this year but it is something we should look at,” said Green. This year, the school district actually has a surplus budget, something most surrounding districts would be envious of. Districts around the province are facing large deficits and hard decisions about where to cut as they see enrolment fall DAV I D each year. But Langley is one of only a few districts that is experiencing growth, mainly in the Willoughby area. “Because of the increase in enrolment it helped get us out of our deficit and prevented more trouble from coming,” Green said. Accounting errors several years ago left Langley with an unprecedented $13 million deficit. Through cost saving measures, the district managed to retire that deficit late last year, well ahead of schedule. Enrolment in Langley dropped considerably a few years ago, but is right back to 2001 levels, with more than
19,000 students in the district, he said. Green said the CUPE raise cost the district, and another raise to CUPE employees is expected at the end of June when bargaining wraps up. The other unknown is teachers will be getting a raise in some form, but it’s unclear who will pay. He told Langley Teachers Association president Gail Chaddock-Costello he was under the impression the province would cover those pay increases. She replied that she believed it would be the districts picking up the tab. Trustee Alison McVeigh made a motion that staff explore cost-saving measures and report back for the May board meeting. In question period, Chaddock-Costello GREEN asked Green if staff and students would be made aware ahead of time if their program was being consolidated or cut. “It will happen when conversations are made,” replied Green. Green said another plus for Langley is the increase in international students. The number of students is up to 630 full time enrolled for next year, providing $1.3 million more in revenue. The province only increased funding $300,000 from the previous year, so the board shouldn’t expect any new funding increases, warned Green.

A family’s home was destroyed by fire in the early hours of April 2, after father Andre Harvey Richard allegedly set fire to it, and attcked his wife and daughter. The 14-year-old girl is now dealing with her trauma by setting up a program to help other young women affected by domestic violence.
Teen victim is tackling domestic violence head-on MONIQUE TAMMINGA Tim es Reporter
The 14-year-old girl victimized in the arson and attempted murder in her Langley Meadows home last month is creating a program to help other young women impacted by domestic violence. “I want to do this because I have been through so much stuff and want to help other people in similar situations. I always felt like I’m alone and now I know I’m not,” said the 14-year-old, in a statement released by her aunt Loretta Cella. Loretta is helping her create the outreach program that they hope to have ready for August. The teen’s father, Andre Harvey Richard, is currently in jail facing 13 criminal charges, accused of trying to kill his estranged wife
and her two children by setting fire to their Langley Meadows home at 1 a.m on April 2. The 14-year-old was allegedly assaulted by the accused when she tried to protect her mother from being attacked by him in her bedroom. Loretta Cella, sister to the teen’s mom, is founder of the Passion Foundation and her board of directors has voted to create a fund to get the outreach program off the ground. The aunt and niece aim to have it launch this summer at a Langley community centre or school, to help 10 to 20 young women impacted by domestic violence. The new program will be called Healing Our Hurting Hearts Club, “a name my niece chose as a spe-
cial space for girls to do just that,” said Loretta. The Passion Foundation is an organization that supports leadership development for young women around the world. “A heart-wrenching incident took place in the early morning hours of April 2, when my family members’ lives were turned upside down by acts of domestic violence and arson. My sister and her kids have been feeling a tremendous amount of pain on more levels than we can really speak to, but we are also very grateful for the outreach and support from everywhere. “My niece has experienced deep trauma and continues to deal with the painful emotions associated with this event, but as a survivor Continued, Page 4

Times wins more awards The Times has been recognized with a pair of first place awards as well as an honourable mention award from the 2013 Local Media Association editorial contest. All three awards came in the Class B circulation over 20,001 category among non-daily newspapers across North America. Sports reporter Gary Ahuja picked up a pair of first place awards. Ahuja won for best sports writing for his feature on Trinity Western University women’s volleyball player, Amber Brown. The story, Head Games, chronicles the concussion problems which plagued Brown as she
tried to return to the volleyball court. Ahuja also took top spot for best feature series for his Special Olympics Profiles. He wrote a series of articles on Langley athletes in the leadup to last summer’s Special Olympics B.C. Summer Games. Altogether, 1,100 athletes took part in the Games. And former Times reporter Miranda Gathercole won an honourable mention for Best Sports Photo for her shot Coach Rides Off Into Sunset. The shot shows Saskatoon Hilltops coach Tom Sargeant hoisted up on his players’ shoulders, while he holds onto the Canadian Bowl trophy fol-
lowing his team’s victory over the Langley Rams in the junior football national championship game at McLeod Athletic Park. Altogether, Black Press Community Media/Sound Publishing won 17 awards, the fourth highest among all companies. Meanwhile, at Saturday’s B.C. and Yukon Community Newspaper Association annual awards banquet, The Times came third in the Ma Murray community service awards, for its partnership with Langley Good Times Cruise-In. Production manager Millie McKinnon’s work on the Langley Has Talent series of ads also received a third-place award, for ad campaigns.

It is a group that does not represent the opinion of most Brookswood residents, Ward said. “Yes, some people feel that Brookswood and Fernridge are going to hell in a hand-basket but their few pictures fail to present the whole picture,” Ward said, adding “huge numbers” in the area oppose the restriction as an infringement on property rights and they will make their opinion known. “This is being driven by a few,” Ward said. That drew a sharp retort from Richter. “Give me a break,” she said, adding the Long bylaw would give council breathing space to draft a permanent tree protection bylaw. Mayor Froese appealed for civility during the debate, saying councillors should stick to the issues rather than attack each other. Davis said the bylaw was needed because “there’s a paranoia that when the trees are coming down, high-rises are going up”, a reference to complaints that property owners were clear-cutting because they anticipated a proposed new official community plan would permit higher-density housing. As it turned out, the new plan was rejected by council after a marathon public hearing dominated by opponents. Fox said he opposed the clear-cut ban because it will pit “neighbour against neighbour” and it wasn’t clear how the the bylaw will be administered. “This interim tree cutting bylaw will come into effect immediately after fourth reading and we have nobody to enforce it, no structure for reporting, fines and the like,” Fox said. Long said his modified proposal better deals with clear-cutting without unduly interfering with property owners. “I think this is a good compromise,” Long said, adding the eight-tree or 20 per cent limit was a “considerable amount of lumber.” Long called the sometime heated tone of the Tuesday debate “disturbing.” Opponents and supporters of the interim ban made their pitches to council at the Monday meeting that voted to give preliminary approval. Roland Seguin said “a large silent majority” opposes a tree cutting ban, something he said would interfere with property rights. “Cutting trees should be our decision,” Seguin said. Kerri Ross said Langley needs a tree protection bylaw like other Metro Vancouver municipalities have. “I don’t understand why people are afraid of proper management,” Ross said.

It was the spring of 1974, and amidst a flourish of paisley shirts and feathered hair Brookswood Secondary (at that time only a junior secondary) finally opened its doors to its first cohort of students. But before the year was out, students — thrilled to have a building to call their own after almost a year spent sharing facilities with the H.D. Stafford student body — would rally and go on strike, setting the tone for the 40 years of school pride still to come. “We wanted to set a standard,” said Keely Marshall, who was in Grade 8 during Brookswood’s first year. Marshall had the chance to reminisce lightheartedly about the protest with school friends and former teachers during Brookswood Secondary’s 40th anniversary celebration, held Saturday, April 26. During the event, attendees enjoyed an alumni basketball tournament, school tours, fresh chili and refreshments courtesy of the parent advisory council, catch-up time with current and former staff as well as entertainment from the current

A court battle between the Township of Langley and longtime critic Jacob de Raadt has ended, with a B.C. Supreme Court judge dismissing the Township lawsuit against de Raadt and the provincial Information and Privacy Commissioner over the release of several secret documents. In a 22-page written decision filed in the Vancouver court registry on April 15, Justice Bruce Cohen ruled the Township rendered the whole matter moot when it handed over different versions of a storm water management plan for the Athenry Development project in Willoughby be-
ficult for the municipality to keep its position secret during bargaining with outside contractors. The lawyer filed a legal challenge of the Privacy Commissioner decision, but also turned over the documents to de Raadt, saying that was to show “respect for the commissioner’s decision. By doing so, the judge ruled, the Township made the whole debate over the documents a “hypothetical issue. He declined to rule on the matter. Had the Township withheld the documents, Cohen said he would have ruled in favour of de Raadt and the commissioner.

The saga of a tree-cutting ban in Langley Township has more twists and turns than a pretzel. It is almost certain that these twists are directly related to the upcoming municipal election. There is no doubt that a substantial number of Brookswood and Fernridge residents are frustrated by brazen clear-cutting of stands of large coniferous trees, particularly on acreages in the undeveloped Fernridge area. An interim tree-cutting bylaw that applied to just that area was set to be passed by Township council on April 14. But it was defeated in a 5-4 vote, with property rights cited as a reason not to proceed. Now, after some compromise by those in favour of a ban, Councillor Bob Long has changed his vote, and the interim ban has proceeded, also by a 5-4 margin. Landowners will be able to cut eight trees and up to 20 per cent of the lot area without penalty. This is meant as an interim step, while the Township drafts a permanent bylaw. Any such bylaw should apply to all areas of the Township. If the Township is bringing in such a bylaw, it needs to avoid the exccessive costs that accompany many other Lower Mainland tree preservation bylaws, and apply more common sense. At the same time, there is genuine public concern about dramatic changes in the landscape and the neighbourhood. There is really no good reason to cut huge numbers of trees on a five-acre parcel of land, when building one home. The Brookswood and Fernridge areas do have some of the nicest stands of coniferous trees in Langley, and the large trees are one of the attractions for residents. Steps to prevent wanton cutting are, unfortunately, necessary.

What level of service should injured and sick Tri-City residents expect from BC Ambulance and fire services? That’s at the heart of the issue now being debated as the BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) defends a Resource Allocation Plan that has downgraded some medical emergencies from Code 3 to Code 2. Previously, some of these emergencies were attended by ambulance and fire crews, who responded with lights and sirens at speeds above the posted speed limit. Now, only the fire department is responding with this level of service, while the ambulance drives at posted speed limits and gets there later. According to BCEHS, the change in ambulance response time has actually cut the time paramedics get to serious emergencies, which is a good thing, while slightly lengthening the time for some of these Code 2 calls, reducing the potential for accidents. The change isn’t affecting patient outcome, it says. But local fire departments tell a different story, saying that some of these calls are taking up to half an hour or longer, and in Coquitlam it was reported that people got so fed up with waiting for an ambulance, they drove a patient to the hospital themselves. The cities argue this service change is downloading, pure and simple, so that instead of increasing resources to enable ambulances to handle the growing demand for service as the population increases and ages, the province is merely reducing some services to hold the line on costs elsewhere. But here’s the thing: Should firefighters stop attending these calls, too? That’s what BCEHS says, arguing that cities should adopt the same level of service, then there wouldn’t be any concerns about downloading. But this argument ignores the fact that residents pay for and have come to expect a certain level of service, and if firefighters adopt the same service model as the ambulance, the cities will catch heat. After all, a patient in severe pain may not be dying, but shouldn’t they get a quick response to hospital? Once again, the cities are saddled with the costs and the responsibilities of a senior level of government. And that’s just painful. Quick, call an ambulance. Wait… don’t bother. — Tri-City News

Canadians not warned of dangers of Ebola virus Editor: News on the Ebola virus? Not from CBC. Or any other mainstream news outlet on this continent that I know of. One has to look to foreign news outlets to even learn that a deadly outbreak of Ebola virus is even occurring in Ivory Coast, Guinea and is now entering into Liberia and Sierra Leone. At least the National Geographic is forthcoming about the outbreak. As of April 28, their website stated: “Viral hemorrhagic fevers are perhaps the most feared and least understood of the emerging infectious diseases. Mortality rates for Marburg (another hemorrhagic disease) and Ebola viruses are astoundingly high at 70 per cent. Of all the hemorrhagic fevers, however, Ebola is the most feared. Health researchers all over the world are working hard to trace the origins of these viruses wherever outbreaks occur. It is extremely dangerous to residents and travellers alike, once it enters a population.” So why haven’t there been any advisories from the Canadian government on this deadly outbreak? The BBC is advising travelers to use caution if heading for these countries. What’s wrong with CBC? I accuse the Stephen Harper government and the CBC of criminal negligence in not reporting this deadly Ebola outbreak that has killed hundreds of people in four different countries and is entering into the cities of these countries. Ebola is highly contagious. It is lethal. In 1976 and 1995, Ebola killed 83 per cent of those infected in Zaire. Those were small areas and the virus was successfully contained, but even that infection was a huge battle requiring many resources. This time Ebola has already escaped into other countries. Why are Stephen Harper and the CBC deliberately exposing Canadians to this monstrous disease by withholding information? BETTY KRAWCZYK, VANCOUVER
A change in perspectives Editor: After battling breast cancer for over a year, my perspectives on life have since changed. Production was outstanding Editor: Last week, I had the privilege of seeing the Wizard of Oz performed at the Langley Fundamental Middle School. Everything about the play exceeded my expectations. The props, the costumes, the special effects, and most importantly the performers themselves, just blew me away. I’m sure I can’t even begin to image the amount of time
and hard work that have been invested into this performance. It has all paid off though, because the students are doing an outstanding job. I recommend you go and see it. You will not be disappointed. JESSICA HORST, LANGLEY
Many past intrusions by Langley Township Editor: I find it quite laughable that one of the main reasons for the defeat of the tree-cutting ban was listed as property owners’ rights. In the wake of such intrusion as RV parking bylaws, secondary suite regulations, height variances etc., it seems Langley Township council has trouble maintaining a consistent line of reasoning.
N. JOHNSON, LANGLEY Editor’s note — After defeating a tree-cutting ban by a 5-4 margin on April 14, Langley Township council has now reversed course, approving an interim ban in Brookswood and Fernridge on April 28, by the same 5-4 margin.
Resource values jump while taxation falls Editor: This is an open letter to British Columbia’s MLAs: As British Columbians, we are some of the most fortunate people in the world. We share the riches of abundant natural resources and the public services, which derive from the taxes we pay. We also expect that the private corporations that extract these public resources should pay a fair share of the value of those resources in
the taxes they pay. However, a comparison of the value of the resources extracted in 2001 with those extracted in 2012 and the related tax revenues exposes an alarming trend that we should be very concerned about. In 2001, the value of coal production was $959 million. By 2012 it had grown to $5.06 billion — an increase of 527 per cent. The value of metals production in 2001
was $1.394 billion. In 2012, it was $2.453 billion — an increase of 76 per cent. The value of industrial minerals in 2001 was $296 million. That had increased to $472 million in 2012, a 60 per cent increase. This represents a huge increase in corporate revenue over the last 10 years or so. In comparison, if we look at the total B.C. natural resource tax revenue in 2001, we see that it was about $4.2 billion. In 2013, that
figure had declined to about $2.5 billion. Provincial tax revenue from public resources has declined from about 35 per cent to 15 per cent, a stark contrast to the huge gains made by private, resource-based corporate interests. Can you help us understand this apparent anomaly? RAY BLESSIN, KAMLOOPS

Thursday, May 1, 2014 11 The endangered Oregon spotted frog is getting a bit of a leg up from staff at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. The zoo’s spotted frog recovery team released tadpoles, hatched at the Aldergrove facility, into wetlands near Aggasiz recently. Their hope is the amphibians will live to maturity and breed successfully in the wild. Subm itted ph oto
Zoo helping endangered frogs The endangered Oregon spotted frog has hope for a comeback thanks to the Greater Vancouver Zoo. On Friday, staff from the zoo, along with wildlife biologists from the Oregon spotted frog recovery team released tadpoles into their natural wetland environment near Agassiz, in an area specifically modified and enhanced to meet the frogs’ habitat needs. “We are extremely proud as this was the first year that we attempted breeding the frogs in a captive environment, which
proved to be very successful,” said zoo manager Jody Henderson. It is hoped that these tadpoles, in addition to frogs reared throughout the summer, will survive until breeding age, ensuring the survival of this unique species in Canada. Oregon spotted frogs are endangered because they constantly face threats from tremendous loss of suitable habitat due to draining of wetlands, overcrowding of bullfrogs, green frogs and predatory fish that eat the tadpoles and young
frogs. Another potential threat is the chytrid fungus which is native to Africa and has caused significant loss of amphibian populations in many parts of the world. The Oregon spotted frog is now limited to four sites within B.C., one in the Aldergrove area and three in the Agassiz area. The Oregon Spotted Frog Recovery Team was formed in 1999. Since then, the zoo has been actively involved with the recovery team and the breeding program.

It was started in Langley in 1989 by a small group of equine enthusiasts, including founder Jim McCrae. With the combined good efforts of that small group, Back Country Horsemen Society of British Columbia (BCHBC) received official ‘not for profit’ status on June 11, 1991. BCHBC today provides: an environment for equestrians who are interested in trail riding and the back country, as well as a social, safe learning atmosphere where people of all ages and experience can enjoy trail riding and the wilderness experience. Pine beetles, cold winters and a warming planet Last week’s column on Earth Day myths attracted a fair amount of criticism. One tireless member of the “Alberta tar sands killing the planet” crowd scolded me for daring to mention that 60 per cent of the oil pollution in the oceans around North America comes from natural seeps. That’s eight times more than all pipeline and tanker spills combined, and it’s been going on 24 hours a day for the last 10,000 years or so. This fact blows another hole in the carefully crafted narrative that only Canadian oil exports to Asia would destroy our delicate ecosystems. That narrative is why the daily Alaska supertankers along the B.C. coast are ignored, as is the barbaric shale oil rush in North Dakota that can be seen from space. U.S. oil barons are flaring off the vast volume of natural gas that comes up with the more valuable light crude, while the U.S. environment lobby obsesses over the Keystone XL pipeline. Here’s another one that may upset people indoctrinated by our school system, media and our supposedly green B.C. Liberal government. B.C.’s recent pine beetle epidemic was caused by human carbon emissions, right? Everybody knows that. Gordon Campbell hammered the point home in speeches for years. In 2012, I participated in a B.C.

Their gift will be used to purchase two vital pieces of equipment for the newly-expanded Maternity Unit: a PANDA infant warmer and an infant resuscitation unit. She started with 30 housewives, who saved pennies from their grocery money, to help the poor. For the last 43 years, the foundation has been contributing to better social and community services, medical care, education and humanism in Taiwan and around the world. The foundation has volunteers in 47 countries, with 372 offices worldwide. There are about 1,100 members in the Metro Vancouver area. Their guiding principle on charity is to “help the poor, and educate the rich.”

Fatigue, weight gain, poor memory/concentration, constipation, hair loss, dry skin, feeling cold – these are all symptoms of an underactive thyroid. There is a lot of controversy around whether the lab reference ranges for thyroid hormones are enough to guide treatment of hypothyroid. NOW Thyroid Energy is a natural supplement containing ashwagandha- a popular herbal supplement for a wide array of health conditions, including hypothyroidism. Animal studies suggest that it increases endogenous production of T4. NOW Thyroid Energy also contains tyrosine (a precursor to T4), selenium and zinc (crucial components of the enzymes responsible for converting inactive thyroid hormone T4 into its active form T3), and guggul- an Ayurvedic herb that stimulates the conversion of T4 to T3. NOW Thyroid Energy is available without a prescription, but this does not mean it cannot interact with your prescription drugs. Come in to one of our locations and chat with our knowledgeable pharmacists about your symptoms and medications, so we can work together to decide if this supplement is right for you!

Langley mom helps brings harmony to the home front While being a parent is one of life’s greatest joys, it can also be challenging and isolating role for many. The increased financial pressure of expanding one’s family, constant worrying and sleep deprivation — a common causality of motherhood and fatherhood — can wage war on one’s health. Of all the complaints moms and dads have of their new role, even parents raising their second or third baby, lack of sleep continues to be the biggest trial. Rather than accept a lack of zzz’s for the foreseeable future, parents here in Langley are turning to a sleep consultant like Marnie Huard of Cheekychops to help bring harmony back into the home front. The Langley mom to 21-month-old Reiken, knows firsthand how tough it can be to get by without a good night’s rest. Protect yourself from fraud and identity theft Each year, thousands of Canadians are victims of fraud and identity theft. To help prevent it from continuing to take place, Jaime Lord, senior investigator for corporate security at Envision Financial is sharing the importance of recognizing fraud, reporting it and stopping it.  “Instances of fraud are on the rise and it’s more important now than ever to learn how you can protect yourself,â€? explained Lord. “While fraud can happen to anyone, there are definitely steps that people can take to protect themselves. The best offence is a good defense, and fortunately, there are a number of ways you can proactively protect yourself against fraud and identity theft.â€?  Lord shares a few simple tips to keep in mind to help guard against fraud.  Protect your PIN “Even though we hear about it all the time, it’s important to remind people to always protect their PIN,â€? says Lord. “This applies not only to when you’re using your debit or credit card, or logging in to any online accounts, but also in how you store your PIN. Never write your PIN down or share it with anyone. I know it can be a pain to memorize so many passwords but that’s really one of the most effective ways to prevent your PIN from being stolen.â€?  Phishing for information “Beware of phishing emails, usually sent with an urgent request or link asking for personal or financial information,â€? says Lord. “Legitimate businesses or financial institutions will not ask for personal information this way. If you accidentally clicked on a link that you think may have compromised
your computer, contact your service provider right away. This also goes hand in hand with making sure you protect your computer by activating your firewall, securing your Wi-Fi network and have sufficient anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spyware protection.â€? Mobile alerts for when you’re on the go “Signing up for mobile alerts for online banking can help you stay on top of your account activity,â€? says Lord. “If transactions or activities are occurring on your account like password changes or new bill payees being added, these notifications will alert you to potential fraud immediately.â€? What you toss can hurt you One of the easiest ways that identity thieves can access your personal information is through the trash, particularly if you discard things like old credit card receipts, financial statements or even pre-approved credit card applications without tearing them up. “Shred everything –including any documents that contain any personal information,â€? says Lord. “Don’t forget to completely destroy the data before disposing of your old computers, hard drives or mobile device as simply deleting and reformatting hard drives are not enough. Items like CDs or DVDs should be physically destroyed before they’re thrown out.â€? Envision Financial is a division of First West Credit Union, B.C.’s third-largest credit union, with 39 branches and 28 insurance offices throughout the province operating under the Envision Financial, Valley First and Enderby & District Financial brands. Â

Adding offence key for 2015, says GM DISAPPOINTING 4-14 REGULAR SEASON RECORD LEAVES STEALTH AT HOME WATCHING NLL POST-SEASON G ARY AH U J A Tim e s Spo r ts
Defence may win championships, but you still need enough goals to qualify for the post-season. “Frankly, we just didn’t score enough goals at the end of the day,” said Vancouver Stealth general manager Doug Locker. The Stealth lost their final game of the 2014 National Lacrosse League season, falling 14-8 to the visiting Calgary Roughnecks at the Langley Events Centre. Vancouver won two of its first three games before losing 13 of the next 15 to finish at 4-14. Locker said for a team to be successful, they need to hit about the 200-goal plateau, an average of just over 11 per game. The Stealth were the second-lowest scoring team in the nine-team league and 10 times out of 18 failed to crack double digits in goals. Their record in those games was 1-9. Another problem for the team was its record in onegoal games as they finished with a 1-4 mark. “I would assess the season as largely being disappointing,” Locker said. The Stealth had been in three of the past four Champion’s Cup games — the NLL title game — before this past season, the team’s first in Langley after relocating from Everett, Wash. “I think anytime you don’t achieve your goals, and struggle mightily like we did, it is obviously disappointing. We just never seemed to be able to get on track. Wheth-
er that be a chemistry issue, an injury issue, a suspension issue, it just never seemed to come together where we could gather any momentum from one game to the next.” A big turning point in the season — something head coach Chris Hall has mentioned before — was a home loss to the Edmonton Rush back in January. In that game, Vancouver led 7-2 at the half but Edmonton rallied for seven of the final eight goals to win 9-8. The Rush finished as the top team in the NLL at 16-2. “I don’t think we ever really recovered from that game to tell you the truth,” Locker said. “It was one of those defining moments where we had an opportunity to get it done against a very good team and it slipped through our fingers.” After that, the team could not recover from some key suspensions and injuries at an inopportune time. “It just unraveled from there,” Locker said. Team owner Denise Watkins has been vocal that she is happy with the team’s management and coaching staff. The plan is to sit down with coaches and players individually beginning next week. “Just take some time and let the emotion and fatigue of the season settle in a little bit and then really evaluate every singe player, individually and collectively,” Locker said. “We will take some time to make sure we are making the right decision.” The bottom line, he said, was that the team must score more goals if it wants to re-

This past season, Rhys Duch led the team with 36 goals and 80 points, numbers that were below his past years. Veteran Lewis Ratcliff also had a slow start and finished with 23 goals and 55 points, his lowest totals since his rookie season in 2003. Rookie Tyler Digby was a bright spot — winning backto-back league rookie of the month awards in January and February — with 22 goals and 58 points. “The bottom line is we have to score some more goals so we have to do some things to improve our goal scoring ability, whether that be through the draft, free agency or some trades,” Locker said. The Stealth will draft second overall and depending
what the team decides to do with the pick, that will impact the team’s strategy in improving other areas. Locker said the team is largely happy with its defensive group, but they could use more depth — captain Kyle Sorenson and veteran Chris O’Dougherty combined to play just 15 games — but it is hard to build depth with just two practice spot rosters.

Langley United gave the two-time defending provincial champion Surrey United Firefighters all they could handle, but conceded a late goal to fall 2-1 in overtime in the Provincial A Cup quarter-finals. The game was played on Saturday afternoon at Willoughby Community Park. The Firefighters had gone ahead in the 10th minute and that goal stood until midway through the second half when Langley United took advantage of Surrey having to play a man short after a red card. Mitchell Rohla unleashed a 35-yard shot that sailed over the head of the Surrey keeper. The game needed extra time and in the first period, Langley United also had a man sent off for a second yellow card. Surrey United struck for the winning goal late in the second overtime period.

Redhawks rugby on the rise GARY AH U J A Ti me s Spo r t s
Everybody likes a winner. And that is what is happening on the pitch with the D.W. Poppy Redhawks rugby program. “It started two or three years ago when we had a really big junior group come through,” explained Kyle Barry, who coaches the Poppy senior team alongside Mike Munsie. “They started playing and taking to the sport,” Barry explained about the Poppy core, who are now in Grade 12. Of this year’s 26 players on the senior team — which is ranked sixth in the province among Double-A boys teams heading into the playoffs — 18 are in Grade 12. “They had a very tough road last year, but they made it to provincials (last year),” Barry said about the senior team which wound up finishing 16th. “But that raised a lot of eyebrows here from the our juniors and our juniors came out in droves.” Poppy had about 30 players come out for the junior team this season and has also put together a solid season. The Redhawks are 1-1 in the playoffs — they beat the Charles Best Blue Devils last week but lost to the Terry Fox Ravens on Monday — and faced the Langley Saints yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. Both Langley teams have qualified for the Fraser Valley championships and the game was to determine which team
••• The R.E. Mountain Eagles senior boys team finished the regular season at 3-3 and are listed as an honourable mention in the Double-A rankings. The Eagles play the Rick Hansen Hurricanes today (Thursday) in a playoff game to see which team advances to the Fraser Valley semifinals. The winner will play the G.W. Graham Grizzlies.

The Redhawks won 18-17 and have qualified for the Fraser Valleys. came fifth in the Upper Fraser Valley. The junior team is coached by Carl Hunter and Bryan Gill. “For a team that I would say three quarters of them have never played rugby before, to come in and have done this, that is absolutely spectacular,” Barry said. The senior Redhawks were 4-2 during league play and they are expected to host a Fraser Valley semifinal game on May 8. Their opponent will be either Southridge, Abbotsford or Brookswood, depending on results this week after The Times press dead-
line. A victory would guarantee a spot at the provincial championships at the end of the month. The top three teams from the Fraser Valleys qualify while the fourth-place finisher will play a wildcard game against the fifthplace team from the Lower Mainland to see which team moves on. And Barry says the team has their eyes on a return trip to provincials — and a finish in the top eight in B.C. Barry said the returnees from last year got a taste of the provincials “and want it bad.”
“We can definitely adapt our game play to what our opposition brings to the table,” he said. “We are strong on the forwards, strong on the backs.” The senior squad is led by standouts Gino Paolella and Nick Vandergoes, who have both played on provincial teams in the past. And in June, Paolella has earned a spot on Canada’s 9’s team while Vandergoes has been named a reserve. Barry also credited the play of Matthew Theodore, Kyle Sagert and scrum-half Brodie Muench as some of the team’s catalysts.

Seven gold for Spartans at meet Trinity Western Spartans Sarah Inglis set a new meet record on her way to winning the gold medal at Western Washington University’s Ralph Vernacchai meet on Saturday at Bellingham’s Civic Stadium. Inglis won the mile event in 4:46.09. This was one of seven gold medals won by Spartan track and field athletes at the meet. James Linde won three of those
golds, taking top spot in the 100m (10.84), the 200m (21.85) and the long jump (6.87m). Joel de Schiffert won the mile (4:12.73) and Calum Innes (100m, 14.61) and Nathan Dunford (pole vault, 4.73m) were the other gold medallists. Ivonne Zuniga won bronze in the pole vault (3.10m) and Levi Neufeld took bronze in the mile (4:15.39). And over the Easter weekend,
Nathan George picked up a gold and two silver medals as the Spartans track and field team was competing at a pair of California meets: the Long Beach Invitational at Cerritos College and the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University. George won the 400m event at the latter meet and was second in the 200m. He was also second in the 300m at the Long Beach Invitational.

The tire decal, with optimal front and rear recommended tire pressures, is usually on the driver’s door or door jam. If not, the owner’s manual should give you the information and/or tell you where the tire decal is located. A single under-inflated tire (by about 6 psi /40 kPa) can cause a 3 per cent increase in fuel consumption. Using a grade of fuel with a lower octane rating than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may cause the engine to ping or knock on hard acceleration or when climbing hills, which is not good for the engine! On the other hand, using a higher-octane fuel than your vehicle’s engine needs is generally a waste of money. That said, the pricier fuel may also contain some additional cleaner additives, which is good. Have a great summer and a safe driving vacation. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Picking the right ride for you Life of two wheels is incredible. Just ask anyone who rides. But part of that appeal is finding a riding style that fits your personal preference. There are many different ways to get you on the open (or dirt) road to enjoy the best of the great outdoors. I’ll suggest some new makes and models to consider in each category, but by no means are these the be-allend-all of choices. Cruisers

Touring When asked how I’d describe a Touring bike I say: not small! These machines are typically heavy, but come equipped with the technology and luxuries that can take you across the country and further. Their fuel tanks are generally much bigger so you can keep going for longer. Furthermore, storage compartments, relatively speaking, are quite generous.

“They’re not safe. But it would only be a problem in an accident.”
Confessions of a Curber I was getting good at this, so I purchased a used vehicle in the U.S. and imported it. It didn’t have any airbags, so the warning lights were on. But I wasn’t picky. I knew, based on my other tricks, I could solve that before I had it inspected and registered. You just couldn’t be too worried about the truth. I Googled airbags. I saw I had three options. Get certified replacements installed at a repair shop. Buy some and install them myself. Or, override the warning light. I called and found that the first option was out of the question. Way too expensive. But, option two had some promise. There were cheap ones online. Of course, there were some warnings about dangerous fake airbags. Option three, overriding the warning lights, went too far – even for me. You can find how-to videos about anything on the web. So, I ordered cheap ones and had them sent to my U.S. mailbox. I used a buddy’s garage and put them in. Bingo! The warning lights went off and I was on my way. Soon, I had an ad up on several classified websites: Great car for sale. Moving out of the country and need to sell fast! Good condition. Recently inspected. Call cell. I’m flexible on price!! I couldn’t believe how many calls I had. I found my buyer not long after. A nice man about my age; divorced with three kids. That’s all I know about him – I don’t like getting too personal. I was actually honest about the vehicle this time. I told him that the car had been in an
accident and was from the U.S. I asked if he wanted a vehicle history report*, but he declined. He appreciated my honesty, as he’d gone through a few bad deals. With the transaction done, we parted ways. Then I got a call from my buddy. Being a curious person, he’d read the boxes the airbags came in that I’d left at his shop. “You installed counterfeit airbags,” he said. “So? They look identical to the original airbags,” I said. “I’ve seen videos of bogus airbags catching fire and with metal bits exploding when they deploy. They’re not safe,” he scolded. I’ll take my chances, I thought. It would only be a problem in an accident. The next day, my buddy left a message. He ended our friendship. Whoa, chill out. A guy’s got a right to make a few bucks.
*Vehicle History Reports: CarProof and ICBC vehicle history reports provide detailed information about the registration and accident history of a vehicle. CarProof Verified BC reports also include a lien search. These reports can’t tell you everything a physical inspection will, but they require the seller to Prove it! and not just say it.
If you’re looking for the ultimate performance machine, a sport bike is the way to go. These are the bikes that are generally designed with the racetrack in mind but are street legal. They have more horsepower than you’ll ever need and harness the engineering prowess of the best of the best. That said, they have an aggressive seating position and aren’t always suited for taller riders. Then again, if we really want something to work, we make it work!
Bikes: Ducati Panigale 899/1199, MV Agusta F3, Honda CBR600RR/1000RR, Suzuki GSX-R 750/1000, Yamaha R6/R1, Kawasaki Ninja Naked
Trials
No, I’m not suggesting riding in your birthday suit!
Those looking into trying riding without the high speeds might fall in love with trials riding. But get ready for a workout. If you look, there’s no seat. That’s because you’re meant to stand. Trials is a slow speed type of thrill where you manage obstacles and find ways to do things that even you didn’t think was possible. Think: riding up huge logs, up steep hills and over some interesting terrain. Either way, it’s a lot of fun and both physically and mentally challenging.
Naked bikes tend to have a more upright seating and handlebar position and are devoid of fancy bodywork covering the engine and mechanical components. You still get quite a bit of sportiness out of these, but without the aggressive seating and the stress on your wrists.
Bikes: Montesa Cota 4RT, Beta 200, Gas Gas TXT Pro Dirt Playing in the dirt has never been so much fun! No, really. It’s true. Whether you’re young or young at heart, dirt bikes are a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Dirt bikes are restricted to the dirt, meaning, unless you have a dual sport bike that has a license plate, you can’t ride them in the road. That said, they’re generally quite affordable and are extremely durable.
Some Naked bikes are: Triumph Street Triple, Triumph Speed Triple, Ducati Streetfighter 848, Honda NC700X, Yamaha FZ-09. Of course, there are café racers, customs bikes and more. I could go on! alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca
Since there are so many different kinds to choose from, I’ll list the manufacturers that make them Bikes: Honda, KTM, Yamaha, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Aprilia Adventure Take the road less traveled, but take the road when you want! Adventure bikes have an uncanny ability to get you through some incredible terrain. Bikes: BMW F700GS/F800GS/R1200GS, V-Strom, KTM 1190 Adventure

Drives-U-Crazy There is little more annoying than the power trips exhibited in parking lots. You are in a busy shopping mall lot and after minutes of cruising you see a driver return to his car and load up. As he climbs in he notices you waiting patiently and that’s when the mind games start. He combs his hair in the mirror and fiddles with the radio or some other time wasting activity. Finally, you figure he’s waiting for a passenger and you pull past him. The moment you do, he backs out. What drives-u-crazy? keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

There are settings for vehicle dynamics and suspension from “Eco” to “Sport Plus” that can take this car from relaxed to athletic at the push of a button. I really enjoyed driving in sport mode and getting the full effect of the 335GT, as the in-line turbo 6-cylinder is still one of the best power plants on the road. For buyers looking to save on fuel and when purchasing, the 328GT is still a potent machine. Verdict The GT falls into a very nice spot in the 3 Series family, and I include the X3 in that group. The sedan is a great car but not as practical as the X3. Yes the X3 has traditional SUV appeal but looses some of the sedans nimbleness. This is where the GT plays.
It has a bigger cargo area than the X3, more rear legroom but it also has more a sedan stance on the road. The price is more expensive than the X3 so this is a premium offering in the BMW family. If I were in the market for a BMW the 335GT or less expensive 328GT would be in the running. With kids I lake having and SUV but still want the fun and stability that a sedan offers. This GT might just be the right balance for some. So thank you China for helping to bring a unique new class of car to our market. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder with 241hp or 3.0L 6-cylinder with 300hp Fill-up: 10.5L/6.7L/100km (city/highway 335GT) Sticker price: $$48,990-$56,990

We do all the work, so you can just go home.
Tell the Story of your Home I had the opportunity to tour some of our company’s listings in the Vancouver area last week with some of my Macdonald Realty colleagues from our Vancouver offices. Apart from the fact that I continue to be astounded by the real estate values in Vancouver, I was again struck by the extent to which homes for sale in Vancouver are professionally staged and photographed and the effect that staging and professional photos have in encouraging sales. Once back in Langley, I mentioned this to one of our Realtors®. She proceeded to give me some more in-depth ideas on how to make your home stand out from the competition. One of her simplest and most striking hints concerned marketing condos and townhouses. When you peruse Realtor.ca it seems automatic that the first photo up is a picture of the front of the house, especially if it presents a beautiful picture. But when you get to a condo or a townhouse there is often no individuality in the photo. A picture of a condo building is pretty well the same as the next building and a photo of a row of townhouses tends to overdramatize the sameness of the townhouses. Our Realtor suggested that, unless the exterior of the home is awe inspiring, she chooses, as her signature first photo, a picture that emphasizes the privacy and personal nature of the home. So a photo of the rear patio or sundeck showing a peaceful scene or an aura of privacy such as a photo of the conversation pit in the family room is the first photo an interested buyer sees. In addition, home-stagers provide a consultation with recommendations. The word consultation suggests that all interested parties (clients and Realtors®) should take part in the discussion and provide insight. For instance our Realtor® showed me a photo
of a beautifully appointed and staged kitchen. The home stager suggested a very attractive fruit bowl for the countertop. She wanted to leave the bowl empty so that it was there in simplicity but didn’t interfere with the wonderful impression that the rest of the kitchen provided. Our client disagreed . She felt that a bowl, full of fruit, was a part of “the story” of her kitchen and showed that the kitchen had an important place in her family. The client (and the Realtor®) won that argument. When I looked at the photo my eye was immediately drawn to a bowl filled with bright yellow lemons, washed and polished, (OK - they had to compromise with the stager a little), which complimented and enhanced the entire kitchen area. When we compared the photos of 2 townhouses in the complex the difference was astounding. One townhouse had been cleaned and de-cluttered. The other townhouse had been staged in addition. Our Realtor suggested that we should now be doing with pictures what we used to do with words back in the nineties. The pictures should lead the buyer’s eye through the house and describe the home by way of the photos. She said that you needed to tell the story of the home through the photos and their sequence. Each photo should pull a buyer further into the story of the home. You need to find the buyer who’s looking for that story. That’s what will attract a buyer and cause them to want to see the home in person. That’s the job of marketing - to tell the story of the home --and therefore get the buyer inside the home.
