Cuts are coming to Teck Trail Operations, following the company citing a $262 million reduction in first quarter profits compared to this time last year. The local union has been informed that Teck will be undertaking a cost reduction plan, confirmed Gord

In addition to dealing with current job action by the B.C. Teachers Federation (BCTF), School District 20 administrators also face the daunting task of having to find almost $870,000 in savings in order to eliminate the budget
deficit for the 2014/2015 school year. The budget proposal was presented for its second reading and public discussion at the board’s regular open meeting this past Monday at the Kootenay-Columbia Learning Centre, in the former Trail Middle School. Included in potential cost-saving measures is the elimination of one trades position, the reduction of as many as four full-
time teaching positions due to lower student enrolment, and a potential reduction of library staff. There are also potential changes to transportation strategies for students, ranging from charging for bussing services on a perstudent yearly basis to eliminating bussing services and providing students who live outside of the district’s set walking limits with funding for public transit.

I would like to invite Trail and District citizens to the 51st annual Silver City Days 2014. The Trail Festival Society’s directors have spent another long year organizing this event with the hopes that all those attending will enjoy themselves. We have many local non-profit groups that work hard to supply great food and events for all to enjoy during this event. Also we have returning vendors to complement the festival as well. West Coast Amusements will once again supply the carnival rides for us. The Society runs this event as a separate entity from the City of Trail; the city does supply an operational grant to help us provide this great event. Some of the local business owners in the area are also eager to provide us with funds to help with the event. For those of you the Society and myself give Thanks, as without you it would be hard to continue this great event. We are continuing to try and make this event enjoyable for all ages. As well we continue to try and make this a Multi-Cultural event. If you have any ideas or would like to bring your cultural ways into this event contact us with your ideas. Trail Festival Society P.O. Box 333, Trail, B.C., V1R-4L6 As in past years we have tried to make this event bigger and better. I wrote in 2004 and I still get really emotional about every time I sing it,” she said. “I’ll probably start to cry on stage so I am sure the song will touch the emotion of someone else in the room.” Manna started singing as a toddler when she was inspired by her Italian aunt who had a regular spot singing on the Toronto-based Johnny Lombardi Show, an Italian variety show that still airs every Sunday at 11:30 a.m. from the heart of Little Italy in the east coast metropolis. “I started singing before I spoke,” said Manna. “My first song was about the mountains in Italy that my aunt, who was also my babysitter, was trying to learn.” Manna learned then to play piano and began writing songs after her first broken heart at the age of 14. “You know Taylor Swift,” she chuckled. “I was doing it before her.” Manna said after her first heartache she went to the piano and the songs started to flow from her fingertips. “Every song I’ve written was either for a heartbreak and the other spiritual,

Catherine Manna can’t believe her eyes when her picture, bio and music samples pop up on the Independent Music Channel, an American online radio station. The Trail singer and songwriter headed to Hollywood April 25 for the channel’s third annual music awards, after penning six songs that led to two nominations.

When Manna is not writing music, she keeps busy with
her passion for fashion and all things organic at her East Trail shop: The Garden of Eden. Manna opened the small, colourful shop that sells everything from flowers to funky clothing, gluten free goodies, organic makeup, jewellery and local crafts two years ago. “After raising my kids all these years, I opened up this store and it just kind of grew just like my music,” she said. “Seems like the odds would be against me, but here I am doing it.”

When Catherine Manna boarded a flight for California last week, the Trail songstress was following a 50-year dream in the making. The single mother of three headed to Hollywood with hopes of winning two awards for her song writing skills at the Independent Music Channel’s third annual awards held last Saturday. Manna was nominated for Best Easy Listening Song Writer of the Year and Best Contemporary Christian Songwriter of the Year by the Internet channel after six songs she entered proved to have staying power on the online radio station, making the site’s charts for 10 weeks. She crossed another item off her bucket list when she performed live on stage at Sunset Boulevard’s famous Whisky A Go Go after the indie channel’s VIP party and nominee reception wrapped up. “There’s a story behind every song I write,” she said, when she caught up with the Trail Times before departing on her adventure. “I am thinking about singing ‘It was you,’ which is a song

West Kootenay ghost town Fifty-seventh in a more-or-less alphabetical series on West Kootenay/ Boundary place names The Lardeau ghost town of Ferguson was named for David Ferguson (18611903), a miner, prospector, and hotelier. One of six brothers born at Grand Bend, Ontario who came to West Kootenay, he was first mentioned in the Nelson Miner of February 7, 1891: “Dave Ferguson and W.C. Phillips are the first arrivals of the year from the main line of the Canadian Pacific; the former from Revelstoke …” By late 1893, Ferguson was in the Lardeau and on March 24, 1894, the Miner noted: “Dave Ferguson is now at his cabin at the Forks getting lots ready for the new building he proposes to erect in the spring.” The forks referred to was the confluence of Lardeau Creek and what became Ferguson Creek. Ferguson pre-empted a flap of land there that he named after himself. The earliest reference from Revelstoke’s Kootenay Mail of April 14, 1894 said: “Messrs. C. Holden of the Silver Cup and D. Ferguson, a land boomer from Ferguson City, arrived at Thomson’s Landing this evening …” The name soon changed, but continued to honour its founder. On August 25 of that year, the Mail wrote: “While Mr. Ferguson was digging potatoes on his ranch at St. David’s he found three small nuggets in his pan. The gold at St. David’s must be up to the grass roots.” The newspaper added on September 8: “St. David’s is prettily situated at the forks of the Lardeau, about four miles from Trout Lake City, and promises to become a mining centre, being situ$ 99 ated within a short distance of several

notable mines … [T]aken altogether, things look quite promising for the fortunate owner of the townsite, Mr. Dave Ferguson.” But it was slow going and ultimately Ferguson decided the town would be better off with his surname. From the Miner of August 8, 1896: “A new town known by the name of Ferguson has been started at the forks of the Lardeau, about 15 miles from Thomsons Landing.” Walter Henderson began surveying the townsite that November but didn’t complete the plan until October 24, 1898. It’s unclear why it took so long. Ferguson had two avenues, Victoria and Lorne, eight streets, Ferguson, Clark, Johnson, Dufferin, Pool, Graham, Knowles, Vickers, and one road, Lansdowne. Curiously, the 1897 Henderson’s directory referred to the town as Lardeau Forks. Ferguson prospered for a short time

on the strength of the Nettie L and other mines. A post office application was filed in late 1896, but it didn’t open for another two years. It moved to Trout Lake in 1969, but retained the name Ferguson until it closed five years later. David Ferguson moved to Saanich, where on December 19, 1903, he vanished. The Victoria Daily Colonist said the “extraordinary disappearance … caused somewhat of a sensation.” His family offered a $1,000 reward but later withdrew it. The following March, a body discovered in a bush was confirmed as Ferguson. A coroner’s jury ruled it “suicide in a fit of despondency.” Ferguson’s namesake town went into a long decline although at least one pioneer building, the Lardeau Hotel, stood into the 1970s. In the last decade or so, the town’s main street has come back to life as original lots have been sold off to recreational users who have built cabins.

A tire also performs best, lasts longer and provides best fuel economy when its internal pressure is set at a level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, and checked on a regular basis. The tire decal, with optimal front and rear recommended tire pressures, is usually on the driver’s door or door jam. If not, the owner’s manual should give you the information and/or tell you where the tire decal is located. A single under-inflated tire (by about 6 psi /40 kPa) can cause a 3 per cent increase in fuel consumption. Using a grade of fuel with a lower octane rating than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may cause the engine to ping or knock on hard acceleration or when climbing hills, which is not good for the engine! On the other hand, using a higher-octane fuel than your vehicle’s engine needs is generally a waste of money. That said, the pricier fuel may also contain some additional cleaner additives, which is good. Have a great summer and a safe driving vacation. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

Five of the Most Influential Classic Designs Ever
By Rob Sass
Certain cars just won’t recede into the automotive fossil record. Designers (particularly those from their company of origin) keep going back to
the well. And why not? – It’s almost impossible to top the cars on this list: 1967 Toyota 2000 GT: The gorgeous Toyota 2000 GT sports car was a giant commercial flop when it was introduced. The status
of Japanese cars in the U.S. market at the time was roughly the equivalent of Korean cars about 15 years ago, and a Japanese car that cost more than a Jaguar EType, a Corvette or a Porsche 911 found few takers. Just
over 300 were built and the model’s failure continues to haunt Toyota. The roofline and greenhouse of the 1967 2000GT show up almost unaltered in the latest Toyota sports car concept, the FT-1. Incidentally, Toyota has
probably had the last laugh here, as the 2000 GT is now the only Japanese collectible car worth $1 million. 1967 Cadillac Eldorado: The ’67 Eldorado is one of the great overlooked post-war American classics. A Bill Jeep CJ-5

Mitchell design triumph, it’s an ageless design that wouldn’t look out of place in a showroom today, particularly since Cadillac continues to revisit the ’67 Eldo rear end, one of the greatest ¾-views of all time. 1954 Jeep CJ-5: The original Jeep CJ may well be the most knocked-off vehicle of all time, inspiring the likes of the Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, Suzuki Samurai, etc., not to mention, of course, the current Jeep Wrangler. Jaguar E-Type: The E-Type was one of the prime influences for the abovementioned Toyota as well as the famous Datsun 240Z. Its extreme long hood, short rear deck design and covered headlight styling cues also continue to show up in Jaguar’s own products like the XK8 and the new F-Type. After all, it was by rival Enzo Ferrari’s own admission the most beautiful car in the world. 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback: Long before Ford went retro with the 2005 Mustang, they knocked off their own design for the original pony car with the European Ford Capri. Toyota went one step further with the 1973 Celica Liftback, a virtual ¾-scale replica of the Mustang Fastback. Even the upper crust Aston Martin with its V8 Vantage model of the 1970s went to the Mustang well. The 2015 Mustang still sports design cues from the original 1965 Mustang fastback. driveway.ca Take your child to work day and experiment on them! By Keith Morgan
General Motors has put a new spin on ‘Take your child to work day’. You can’t put them to work while they are learning what mom and dad do but they can be useful as experiment subjects. The so-called Human Factors group conducts about 100 studies globally into how people interact with their vehicles. Having children around means group members can test such things as seat belts. No, they don’t crash test the cars but they do examine
kids, to help determine the best location.” This year during the special day, the Usability team conducted a study looking at the Buick Enclave’s third-row safety belt buckles. The kids were asked to use smiley faces to compare and rate the ease of fastening the safety belt based on a five-point scale. A previous study dealt with a sickly problem that many of us have faced on trips with young offspring. In the early days of DVD players in cars, there were many kids forced to reach for the barf bag
how easy it is for children to buckle up. “Working with children on Take Your Child to Work Day is an excellent way for us to expand our pool of feedback,” said Don Shreves, GM Human Factors engineering group manager. “Our group and research is very data-driven,” he said. “Designing every element to a vehicle comes down to millimetres. While a door handle placement or seat switch might feel right to the designing engineer, we come in with data points from real consumer feedback, including
during a long journey. Not now and some credit must go to Shreves’ group who figured out how to place the screen outside of what they charmingly refer to as “the puke zone.” Shreves explains, sensitively: “We know through other scientific research that even if our eyes are focused on a fixed point – if we can see the outside passing by in the window – our brain is telling us that we are moving. “But if our eyes are at a downward angle and do not see the view outside the vehicle, our bodies become
sensitive to motion and increase the chance of sickness.” The team’s goal was to keep passenger’s eyes up and in a given spot. Determining that precise location required setting up a DVD screen on a track that could slide fore and aft along the roof of an Enclave. Researchers recorded the responses of more than 75 kids who were asked when the screen distance was too close and too far away. From there, the data was graphed and compiled to determine the best location. The results were

Washing a car can be a chore and a costly one at that. In response, Nissan in Europe has begun tests on innovative paint technology that repels mud, rain and everyday dirt, meaning drivers may never have to clean their car again. The specially engineered super-hydrophobic and oleophobic paint, which repels water and oils, has been applied to the all-new European market Nissan Note to create the world’s first self-cleaning car. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

Picking the right ride for you By Alexandra Straub
Life of two wheels is incredible. Just ask anyone who rides. But part of that appeal is finding a riding style that fits your personal preference. There are many different ways to get you on the open (or dirt) road to enjoy the best of the great outdoors. I’ll suggest some new makes and models to consider in each category, but by no means are these the be-all-end-all of choices. Cruisers Cruisers have mass appeal because of their low seat heights, generally comfortable ergonomics and ability to get you from point A to B in style. Some models have the foot pegs stretched forward, some don’t. They might not be the most nimble bikes around but they certainly do have
mass appeal. Better yet, they come in all different sizes, shapes and displacements making it even more accessible to riders. Bikes: Honda CTX700, Yamaha Bolt, HarleyDavidson Superlow 1200T, Suzuki Boulevard C50 Sport Tourer Want a sportier edge while still maintaining the comfort associated with riding for extended periods of time? Consider a sport touring motorcycle. They’re generally not as heavy or as elaborate as a full on touring bike, so you get the best of both worlds. Bikes: BMW K1300S, BMW K1600GT, Yamaha FJR1300, Honda VFR1200 Touring When asked how I’d describe a Touring bike I say: not small! These machines are typically heavy, but come equipped with the technology
and luxuries that can take you across the country and further. Their fuel tanks are generally much bigger so you can keep going for longer. Furthermore, storage compartments, relatively speaking, are quite generous. Bikes: Harley-Davidson Electra Glide/Ultra Limited, Honda Goldwing, Suzuki Boulevard C90T B.O.S.S. Trials Those looking into trying riding without the high speeds might fall in love with trials riding. But get ready for a workout. If you look, there’s no seat. That’s because you’re meant to stand. Trials is a slow speed type of thrill where you manage obstacles and find ways to do things that even you didn’t think was possible.

Do you work to live, or live to work? We brought the Kia brand to the Kootenays because we believe if you chose to live here, the answer is clear. A beautiful, rugged and proudly stylish SUV doesn’t have to be a dominant expense. Right now a 2015 Sorento can be had for less than $10 a day – or about the cost of lunch. Think: riding up huge logs, up steep hills and over some interesting terrain. Either way, it’s a lot of fun and both physically and mentally challenging. Bikes: Montesa Cota 4RT, Beta 200, Gas Gas TXT Pro Dirt Playing in the dirt has never been so much fun! No, really. It’s true. Whether you’re young or young at heart, dirt bikes are a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Dirt bikes are restricted to the dirt, meaning, unless
you have a dual sport bike that has a license plate, you can’t ride them in the road. That said, they’re generally quite affordable and are extremely durable. Since there are so many different kinds to choose from, I’ll list the manufacturers that make them Bikes: Honda, KTM, Yamaha, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Aprilia Adventure Take the road less traveled, but take the road when you want! Adventure bikes have an uncanny ability to get you through some incredible terrain. Bikes: BMW F700GS/ F800GS/R1200GS, Suzuki VStrom, KTM 1190 Adventure Sport
If you’re looking for the ultimate performance machine, a sport bike is the way to go. These are the bikes that are generally designed with the racetrack in mind but are street legal. They have more horsepower than you’ll ever need and harness the engineering prowess of the best of the best. That said, they have an aggressive seating position and aren’t always suited for taller riders. Then again, if we really want something to work, we make it work! Bikes: Ducati Panigale 899/1199, MV Agusta F3, Honda CBR600RR/1000RR, Suzuki GSX-R 750/1000, Yamaha R6/R1, Kawasaki Ninja Naked
Drives-U-Crazy There is little more annoying than the power trips exhibited in parking lots. You are in a busy shopping mall lot and after minutes of cruising you see a driver return to his car and load up. As he climbs in he notices you waiting patiently and that’s when the mind games start. He combs his hair in the mirror and fiddles with the radio or some other time wasting activity. Finally, you figure he’s waiting for a passenger and you pull past him. The moment you do, he backs out. What drives-u-crazy?
No, I’m not suggesting riding in your birthday suit! Naked bikes tend to have a more upright seating and handlebar position and are devoid of fancy bodywork covering the engine and mechanical components. You still get quite a bit of sportiness out of these, but without the aggressive seating and the stress on your wrists. Some Naked bikes are: Triumph Street Triple, Triumph Speed Triple, Ducati Streetfighter 848, Honda NC700X, Yamaha FZ-09. Of course, there are café racers, customs bikes and more. I could go on!

A recent jaunt to Beijing was a major revelation, from the sheer size of the population to the massive car market and the types of cars people there like to buy. In the luxury segment, elongated versions of existing sedan are very popular. There “long” wheelbase cars instantly show that the owner has attained a certain level of status and a big part of that is being chauffer driven. In Canada, we have long wheelbase sedans but typically, they are top models like a BMW 7 Series or S-Class Mercedes. In China, even base models like the BMW
’’
so the front seats remain unaltered. It is the back of the car that is dramatically different. With added legroom and a higher roofline the GT feels open, especially when fitted with the panoramic roof. My kids loved the extra space but noticed the doors sit a bit higher compared to a regular mid-size SUV. The hatch has no rear wiper so expect rear visibility to be blurry on rainy or snowy days. (You do get spoiled with a rear wiper on an SUV). The hatch is electronically operated and provides a long and wide cargo area, plus the rear seats fold in a snap. The rear windows and cargo do not have darkened, privacy class like an SUV, which is something I would prefer. Drive The 3 Series sedan has been considered the benchmark in the compact luxury market for decades and a lot of the same goodness is here in the GT. With a longer wheelbase and a slightly higher centre of gravity it doesn’t handle as nimbly as the sedan but it is much better than the taller X3 SUV. The power from either 241 hp turbocharged 4-cylinder or the 300 hp turbocharged 6-cylinder engines goes to all four wheels and is shifted through a very slick 8-speed auto box. There are settings for vehicle dynamics and suspension from “Eco” to “Sport Plus” that can take this
car from relaxed to athletic at the push of a button. I really enjoyed driving in sport mode and getting the full effect of the 335GT, as the in-line turbo 6-cylinder is still one of the best power plants on the road. For buyers looking to save on fuel and when purchasing, the 328GT is still a potent machine. Verdict The GT falls into a very nice spot in the 3 Series family, and I include the X3 in that group. The sedan is a great car but not as practical as the X3. Yes the X3 has traditional SUV appeal but looses some of the sedans nimbleness. This is where the GT plays. It has a bigger cargo area than the X3, more rear legroom but it also has more a sedan stance on the road. The price is more expensive than the X3 so this is a premium offering in the BMW family. If I were in the market for a BMW the 335GT or less expensive 328GT would be in the running. With kids I lake having and SUV but still want the fun and stability that a sedan offers. This GT might just be the right balance for some. So thank you China for helping to bring a unique new class of car to our market. zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca The Lowdown Power: 2.0L turbo 4-cylinder with 241hp or 3.0L 6-cylinder with 300hp Fill-up: 10.5L/6.7L/100km (city/highway 335GT) Sticker price: $$48,990-$56,990

Horoscope
for the
Week May 2, 2014
Michael O’Connor
Tip of the Week: The New Moon in Taurus on April 28 was a Solar Eclipse. These moons are described by some as ‘super moons’. The seeds they sow contain a much bigger charge than a regular New Moon. Each sign will generally feel the impact over the next month and especially by the time of the Full Moon on May 14. Yet, it is also said that the waves from a Solar Eclipse continue to roll in, at least in the wake of our personal lives, until the next eclipse season which this year occurs in October. The exact degree of this eclipse was 8 Taurus 52. The impact is increased significantly when the eclipse makes close aspects to sensitive points in our Birth Chart. The nature of the influence depends on the nature of the aspect. Generally, the Fixed Signs, Aquarius, Taurus, Leo and Scorpio stand to feel the effects most strongly. Yet, people with planets or angles at 6 to 10 degrees of any sign will experience the effects. That these powerful events have coincided with the Grand Cross that has received so much attention, add to the degree of impact implied. As ever, there are many cycles at play. This one is ‘generic, as in a collective weather pattern, so to speak, just as is true of the eclipses. How it will manifest depends on how it connects with each individual’s chart. The Grand Cross (Square) occurred at 12 degrees of the Cardinal Signs, so people with planets and angles at 9 to 15 of any sign especially will experience the ‘influence’ most strongly. Thus there is an overlap between these two formations. Regarding the Grand Cross, the true power in it is actually the square aspect between Uranus and Pluto, which began in summer 2010 and will continue until January 2016. To truly understand these influences, we have to step back and see the bigger picture since their bigger impact is better understood from a global, social, political and economic perspective. The revolution of evolution is an old story, but these configurations do indicate a spike in the graph. The implications of these are woven into the interpretations for each sign and have been for many months. There is an archive of previous Horoscopes on my website and the Horoscopes for 2013 and 2014 which offer a wider perspective are there as well. Check them out to see the trends. As well, my free monthly New Moon Newsletter offers even more insight yet. An archive of it is also on my website and sign-up for both are free. Stay tuned for more to come.

Your concentration and focus are deepening. Your sights should now be clearly set on realistic plans and action. This is the follow through period on what was initiated last month. You have reason to feel confident about your progress so be sure to celebrate all advances so far lest you remain ever unsatisfied. Then prepare to explore your next prospects of expression. The gates are wide open and the bull unleashed. Thought the full measure of your charge may have been delayed the momentum is building steadily. This trend will continue over the coming weeks. Your ‘to do’ list will be full and diverse. Concentrate now to establish a secure foundation and strategy to build upon. Making plans and getting things done behind the scenes is a good strategy now. As exciting as this time of the year is, you are wise to use it to recharge your batteries. Intend to soak in the beauty, to be inspired and to simply be. It is quite possible that your next major focus of destiny is being downloaded now. Be open to receive it and take note Who and what do you love and why? This sort of question continues to linger in your mind. Making key investments is also on your mind. These may be of the emotional communicative sort as much as of the practical. Finding new ways and means to express your thoughts and feelings and your ideas and ambitions too is the next task. Business is squarely on your mind. For you this may well include performance, and/or production and direction. Looking for how to make improvements is featured. The focus will turn progressively to artistic and cultural expressions. Whether you are in the lead, playing a performing role at least or a spectator, this is your cue. You are beginning to see a bigger picture. It includes building upon a new quality of thinking, expression and communication. What kind of impression about you do you want to linger in the minds of others? In this day and age this is an important question. While humility has it place so does efficiently and effectively presenting your best.

Exchanges of talents, finances, feelings and resources in general are a current theme. A growing attraction to what others have to offer is on your mind. While you may not yet be ready to take direct, deliberate action, you are open to shopping around. This is time of contracted expansion, as in building your core… body, awareness and resolve. Budding relationships interests and perhaps even romance are on your mind. To succeed now you are wise to be the one to make the first move. You have likely already established a rather serious momentum in this regard. Now it is time for the next phase. Look to the future and be willing to go big. Build a platform for your dreams. This is the dawning of the Age of Sagittarius…. Okay maybe not, but it might as well be at least in your world. Yet, sometimes it is darkest just before the dawn. On the other hand you are probably already seeing the light of the new day. Success includes confronting fears and laying claim to the gifts, treasures and talents that are surely there withi. A creative momentum continues to build. It will inspire you to produce acts and works of beauty. This includes removing what already exists and replacing it with the new. So, yes you will have to disrupt the status quo, perhaps especially at home. More importantly, this shift may have to occur within you to produce the results you seek. Establishing a new base of operations close to home is a main focus now. It will include and likely require changes in your point of view. It is all part of a process of breaking free. From who and/or what is the other question. Consider that it may be from some of your own habitual perspectives, attitudes and expectations. Open to honest communications within and without. A busy time with places to go and people to see is keeping you occupied. Ardent ambitions are keeping your focus strong, even though there are many fronts to consider. Activating new streams of income, taking alternate lines of approach and following fresh leads are featured. Creative diversity is a core theme and a key to success.
