Four walk away from Gold River chopper crash
Online drug dealer delivered by mail
Four people escaped with minor injuries after a helicopter crashed just after takeoff Wednesday morning in Gold River. “Reports indicate that the helicopter was attempting to take off from a local helicopter air base when it suffered possible mechanical issues. The helicopter crashed a short time after take off, suffering a hard landing on a nearby parking lot,” said Const. Peter Koutougos of Nootka Sound RCMP in a news release. The chopper, owned by Black Tusk Helicopters, took off around 7:30 a.m. when the accident occurred. On board were three fallers who were being taken to a logging operation. The trio, plus the pilot were taken to hospital for further examination and treatment. Transport Canada is investigating the crash.

Running a dial-a-dope operation was old-school compared to what James Fowler was doing. The 26-year-old former city resident sold magic mushrooms through the Internet and delivered them through the post office until someone tipped off Campbell River Crime Stoppers. “It’s gone one step further from the dial-a-dope (operations) and brought drugs into any aspect of the community using the Canadian government’s Canada Post resources in order to deliver these drugs. At least that appears to be the suggestion in his text messaging,” said federal Crown prosecutor Paul Corbett during the first part of Fowler’s sentencing hearing in February. Last Friday, in Campbell River provincial court, Fowler received a one-year jail sentence and was fined $1,500 after pleading guilty to drug and weapons charges. He was facing 26 charges following an intense police investigation that began two years ago. In May 2012, Crime Stoppers received an anonymous tip that Fowler was selling drugs, weapons Continued on Pg. 3

and explosives through the Internet. The tipster also said he was planning to detonate explosives. “As your honour may understand, those sort of tips tend to catch the RCMP attention,” Corbett told Judge Roderick Sutton. Mounties were immediately concerned due to Fowler’s past. In 2005, he went to court regarding a matter involving explosives and earlier he had set off “pressure bombs” in a school yard. During electronic surveillance in June 2012, police tracked Fowler to a secluded area off the Duncan Bay Logging Road. There, on land owned by Timberwest, Fowler was tending to 104 marijuana plants spread out over four gardens. Finally, on Aug. 2, Mounties executed a search warrant on Fowler’s residence on South Dogwood Street which he shared with a girlfriend and two roommates. Police found several unsecured rifles and illegal 20-round magazines as well as 240 grams of dried, vacuum-sealed mushrooms. They also seized Fowler’s computer which showed he was dealing drugs through different websites, including his own. The websites also offered ebooks on subjects like growing marijuana, transpor ting vacuum-sealed drugs by

post, making methamphetamines and how to make explosives. RCMP also discovered Fowler’s posts: March 10, “I have 14 ounces I want to get rid of. I’m selling under the username mushroom head for 100 an ounce.” March 23, “13 ounces sold so far. Two have arrived, a few more in transit…if you would like some, please get your orders in now.” The search also turned up a video showing Fowler blowing up metal containers in a gravel pit. However, the prosecutor noted, there’s no suggestion that Fowler ever detonated anything in a public area. Several people also filed letters in support of Fowler who relocated to Edmonton following his arrest. “The letters seem clear that he has had a marked change in his life,” said Corbett. In addition to the year in jail and victim fine surcharge, Fowler was ordered to provide a DNA sample to the national police registry.

It was the biggest and best gala ever for Cameryn’s Cause for Kids Society. It was also fab-u-lous! In a gorgeously decorated Sportsplex gym, a packed house in masquerade dined, danced and opened their wallets last Saturday to donate almost $32,000 to support families in need. “Cameryn’s Cause provides financial assistance to local families who have a child with a life-threatening or acute illness or injury, or help with expenses when a child passes away,” said society founder Shayleen Harris, whose three-yearold son Cameryn died of a brain tumour. But Cameryn’s spirit lives on and to date the society has helped support 80 other Campbell River families. It has also provided financial aid for the funerals of eight children. “We’ve been successful in helping families, not just because of what we do, but because you, our supporters, (who) provide the means and the encouragement to keep Cameryn’s Cause going by donating and attending events like this one,” Harris told the audience. “You have bought into something worth believing in and I am incredibly honoured by that.”

Psst, here’s a little secret about those “Alaskan” grizzlies in Disneynature’s new film “Bears.” “Those are Glendale grizzlies!” says Dean Wyatt, owner of Knight Inlet Lodge. The lodge – located in Glendale Cove 80 kilometres north of Campbell River – caters exclusively to grizzly bear enthusiasts and also attracted the Disney filmmakers. The “true life adventure” is set in Alaska, but during the summer of 2012, the film crew spent about 50 days in Glendale Cove filming a mother and two cubs. They returned again last summer and spent 75 more days filming, but not the same mama and twins. “They fell in love with Bella and her two cubs. They are, as they say, picture perfect,” says
Wyatt. The story follows the family’s wilderness journey to feed and survive. The characters are: Sky, the first-time mom, and her cubs Scout and Amber. There are two other adult bears, Magnus and Chinook, and Tikaani a “mischievous,

What to do about ‘neighbours from hell’ Kristen Douglas Campbell RiveR miRRoR
Bill Tilbury said he lives next door to the “neighbours from hell” and the city has not been particularly helpful in resolving his situation. “The house next door to me is a health hazard, it’s a disgrace. In fact it’s a slum, there’s no other way to put it,” Tilbury said, describing his neighbour’s yard which is often full of old furniture, bags of garbage, old food, and two incessantly barking dogs. Tilbur y made the comments at city council’s public hearing into changing the city’s public nuisance bylaw Tuesday. The hearing attracted a few unhappy neighbours “I’ve called city hall five times,” Tilbury said. “When (bylaw officer) Karl Read comes around they do a 15-minute clean up, put it in bags on the property (then) the crows come, rip it open and the rats get into it. It’s not conducive to pleasant living.” City Clerk Peter Wipper promised Tilbury he would get in touch with him the next day to find a solution. Like Tilbury, Campbell River resident Ken Van de Burgt appealed to council for help with noises he says come from nearby hot tubs and heat pumps used by nearby businesses and a school. “I’ve heard noises from all of these sources at various times in my house,” said Van de Burgt who lives in a wood frame house. “The equipment

generates low frequency total noise that penetrates the walls.” Van de Burgt said he recently made a noise complaint but the bylaw officer did not resolve the problem because he did not visit Van de Burgt’s home to hear the noise and measure the noise level from his home or consider how far low frequency noise travels. Van de Burgt did have some advice for council in amending its public nuisance bylaw. “There needs to be special regulations of hot tubs and heat pumps for hours of operation and for installation including a permitting and inspecting process before they get installed,” he said. Campbell River resident Eric Carlson said it’s beyond time council updates its nuisance policies and steps up enforcement. “My first presentation (to council) 15 years ago Cont. page 7

Nuisance bylaw... good repair and locked or covered with plywood that is of a specified thickness. The plywood then must be painted with two coats of white paint. Coun. Andy Adams took Shane’s presentation to heart and recommended that the city’s two commissions consider adding a piece of Penticton’s bylaw as a preamble to Campbell River’s public nuisance bylaw. Penticton “strives to encourage good relations between neighbours” and the council “endeavours to promote civic responsibility.” Adams said the city should also incorporae a vacant building registry and provisions for locking up vacant buildings, similar to Maple Ridge and Penticton’s.

Then I made a second presentation and I see it’s still going on today and I’m just scratching my head and wondering ‘what is going on here?’” Carlson said. “I don’t think there’s enough teeth to our bylaws, I think that people in Campbell River need a wake up call. I think we need to have stronger enforcement. We’re talking about rules here and rules have to be adhered to.” R e s i d e nt D ar ly n e Shane advised council to look to Penticton and Maple Ridge for help with dealing with public nuisances – in particular, vacant buildings. Shane said the bylaws require all openings on a vacant building to be in

Mayor stands firm on taxes minus five would’ve been much more appropriate.” Jakeway said the 2014-2018 financial plan has too many expenses. “I believe our city is spending far too much and we’re taxing far too much,” Jakeway said. “We need to change our plan for the next five years to correct that situation, so I’ll be voting no.” Coun. Andy Adams agreed that residents are paying enough as it is in taxes and ensured Tuesday that if TimberWest is successful in challenging its tax increase, it won’t be made up by residential taxpayers. Dennis Brodie, the city’s finance operations manager, wrote in a city staff report last week said that if TimberWest wins, a $27,468 shortfall would be “shifted to the residential class (and) it would result in an approximate $2 increase to

Mayor Walter Jakeway criticized council for its spending habits Tuesday night as councillors pushed forward with another tax increase. Council gave first three readings to a 2.92 per cent residential tax increase which council approved during budget planning in January. The tax rate needs to be adopted before May 15 and sent to the province for final approval. But not everyone on council was on board. Jakeway opposed the budget, saying there is no need to raise taxes. “Our taxes in the last three years have gone up 21.4 per cent and that’s outrageous,” Jakeway said. “There’s no way I’ll be supporting that. “Minus five, minus five,

the average house, bringing the overall residential tax increase to 3.07 per cent or $43.” Adams argued Tuesday that shouldn’t even be on the table for consideration. “I would suggest that would not be contemplated at all and I would suggest if the managed forest land decision is challenged successfully that the $27,468 shortfall come from a reduction in the budget and not be added to the residential taxpayers.” Council agreed with Adams and voted to look elsewhere in the budget for the money should TimberWest’s supreme court petition be successful. TimberWest is challenging the city’s managed forest lands tax increase from $2.29 per thousand dollars of assessed value to the provincial average of $13.98, a total tax increase of $27,468 to be phased in over three years.
Cyclist killed on Jubilee An elderly male cyclist was killed Wednesday afternoon after colliding with a vehicle on Jubilee Parkway. The tragic accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m., just west of Dogwood Street. Campbell River RCMP said the 74-year-old Campbell River man was given immediate first aid, but died at the scene. His name was not released. “Support to the family of the deceased was provided by the Campbell River RCMP Victim Services,” said Staff Sgt. Troy Beauregard in a news release. Police spoke with witnesses and the 27-year-old Nanaimo driver who remained at the scene. The investigation is continuing and will focus on possible causes for the collision. Police do not suspect speed or alcohol as factors. The road was closed for several hours for the investigation.

Police forced into social work There’s a reason why we call them first responders. Police, firefighters and paramedics are the first people called when we need help. It used to be for fires, car accidents or falling from a We say: Cuts to tree. But soon police, firefighters and social services paramedics are going to have to add dump cases into ‘social worker’ to their job descriptions. When they’re walking or biking police laps the beat, police are often the ones contacting social service providers for people in need, checking on vulnerable people to ensure they’re safe, and
diffusing dangerous situations. It’s a specialized skill set that used to fall to case workers. As the provincial government closes facilities for people with mental illness, reduces services and resources, case loads for social workers increase and people simply fall through the cracks. Where the police used to be the last call, now they’re often the first. Care for people with mental illness, brain injury or developmental disabilities is complex. With fewer doctors available to take new patients, those high-maintenance clients are left calling crisis lines
and walk-in clinics for stop-gap measures instead of a solution. Add in poverty, poor nutrition, barriers to housing and it doesn’t take long for someone barely getting by to suddenly end up in crisis. It takes a community to raise a child, but it also takes a community to ensure that our most vulnerable people are safe and cared for. That means access to food and nutrition, health care, adequate social services and affordable housing – not a jail cell. – Black Press
Volunter CR on the move Volunteer Campbell River will move from City Hall to the Enterprise Centre this month, thanks to an ongoing agreement with the city that will support the organization with free office space for another 10 years. As a result of the move, Volunteer Campbell River will be closed Thursday, May 1 and will re-open at 900 Alder Street (South Entrance of the Enterprise Centre) on Monday, May 5 with new hours: Monday to Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. “The City of Campbell River recognizes the valuable contribution that Volunteer Campbell River makes to our community. In addition to solving a space crunch at City Hall, moving Volunteer Campbell River to a larger space at the Enterprise Centre will allow for an expansion of the program,” says Dave Morris, the city’s general manager of facility and supply management. “We are excited and pleased to move into these new facilities with a 10-year term which demonstrates the City’s continued support for our program,” says Louise Howes, executive director of Volunteer Campbell River. “Expanded office and meeting space will allow us to continue our vision of working together to build strong and healthy communities through volunteerism.” Volunteer Campbell River is a non-profit society dedicated to advancing the quality of volunteerism and community engagement through leadership and training to individuals and non-profit organizations. In addition to operating a volunteer recruitment and referral program, other services offered by Volunteer Campbell River include: criminal record checks for volunteers, community engagement, volunteer recognition and training opportunities.
Inconvenient truth of the pine beetle epidemic
Tom Fletcher B.C. Views
Last week’s column on Earth Day myths attracted a fair amount of criticism. One tireless member of the “Alberta tar sands killing the planet” crowd scolded me for daring to mention that 60 per cent of the oil pollution in the oceans around North America comes from natural seeps. That’s eight times more than all pipeline and tanker spills combined, and it’s been going on 24 hours a day for the last 10,000 years or so. This fact blows another hole in the carefully-crafted narrative that only Canadian oil exports to Asia would destroy our delicate ecosystems. That narrative is why the daily Alaska supertankers along the B.C. coast are ignored, as is the barbaric shale oil rush in North Dakota that can be seen from
space. U.S. oil barons are flaring off the vast volume of natural gas that comes up with the more valuable light crude, while the U.S. environment lobby obsesses over the Keystone XL pipeline. Here’s another one that may upset people indoctrinated by our school system, media and our supposedly green B.C. Liberal government. B.C.’s recent pine beetle epidemic was caused by human carbon emissions, right? Everybody knows that. Gordon Campbell hammered the point home in speeches for years. In 2012, I participated in a B.C. forests ministry tour of facilities where hardy seedlings are grown for reforestation. Test plantings were also underway to see if the range of southern tree species is shifting northward due to climate
change. During the bus ride, I asked the province’s top forest scientists if Campbell was right. The answer? We don’t have enough evidence to conclude that. As for shifting tree habitat, those decades-long experiments are continuing. The scientists confirmed what I already knew, which is that the most recent bark beetle epidemic is the latest of many. It’s the largest “on record,” but the record goes back less than a century. In 2008, I interviewed Lorne Swanell on the occasion of his 100th birthday. A graduate of UBC’s school of forest engineering, Swanell began his career with the forests ministry in 1930. After a year as a ranger, he was assigned to the Kamloops region to help deal with a pine beetle epidemic.
Conventional wisdom on the latest outbreak holds that it spread so far because of a lack of cold winters, attributed to human carbon emissions. I grew up in northern B.C., and my last two visits to the Peace country were both in January. In 2004 I recall changing planes on the tarmac of Prince George airport, moving briskly in the daytime temperature near -40 C. That night, and subsequent nights, the mercury dropped to -50 C. In January 2013 I returned for some discussions on the Enbridge pipeline route, and experienced a relatively balmy -30 C in the daytime. So when I hear people talk about the end of cold winters in northern B.C. because of global warming, it’s difficult to square with personal experience.

Keeping in fresh greens and saving the ALR I

f you only had one large tub, a small deck and less than six hours of light per day what herbs would you choose for a year round kitchen garden? Here’s a suggestion that has worked for me. Try a combo of chives, sorrel and green onions. You’ll find that chives are the most versatile herb in the pot. They pop up in February and continue to produce through to November. Just keep clipping them back and they will shoot up new stems within a couple of weeks.

The leaves are bright green but not crunchy so try mixing the sorrel with pale Iceberg lettuce and thin sticks of carrot or rutabaga. Raising a crop of green onions is simple. The secret to sustainable growth is to plant only a dozen bulbs at a time. Two or three weeks later plant another dozen and continue this alternat-
ing process from early spring to late autumn. Those reading this column must care very much about quality soil and protection of farmland. Mother Earth needs your help. In this green province, just five per cent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Forty years ago the government knew how important it was to protect this land and they created a provincial Agriculture Land Reserve. Food security, food
safety and local food production is more important today than it has ever been. It is an irreplaceable resource for all of us. The present government has introduced Bill 24 which will irrevocably change the ALR and our food security. The plan is to open the doors to development on ALR other than the area in the lower mainland, the Okanagan and Vancouver Island. That means 90 per cent of the outlying farmland will be managed by committees and lose its protection under
the ALR. What you can do to prevent such a loss is to write to the Premier and Minister of Agriculture or go to savethealr.ca and tell them to Kill Bill 24.

It’s where the absence of blinds meets the misconception that window film still offers reflective privacy at night, however, that things can go horribly wrong. “We always remind folks that they’ll still require the use of blinds and venetians at night for privacy,” recounts Barlow. “ One elderly gentleman unfortunately must have had that advice slip his mind.”

Window film has been around forever, but it’s only quite recently that its popularity has skyrocketed. A thin, transparent polyester coating, window film can keep the sun’s UV rays from bleaching flooring and furnishings as well as provide dramatic insulating effects in both summer and winter. “Many of us associate window film with either a really dark, sleazy limousine tint or a super-reflective mirror finish,” says Dave Barlow, who’s been installing

River posted an 11-3 win over the visitors. With the victories, the Ravens improve to 3-1 on the season, good for second place in the Island division and tied with Juan de Fuca. Victoria is in first, but Campbell River has a game in hand over both clubs. On Saturday, the Ravens play in Victoria.
The Campbell River synchronized swim teams took part in regionals April 12-13 in Vancouver. Owl Mulholland, Caleb Haugen, Sarah Haugen, Anna Haugen and Sydney McInnes took fourth place in the Recreational Team Division. In individual figures they placed: Haugen, 10th; McInnes, 14th; Anna Haugen, 15th; Mulholland, 18th; and Sarah Haugen, 19th. The Provincial Stream Team Level
3 of Megan Hancock, Anna Pehrsson, Devon Rodgers, Sidney Demuth and Rachel Enns placed second overall. Individually they placed: Rodgers, second place; Enns, 6th; Demuth, 11th; Pehrsson, 13th; and Hancock, 14th. The Provincial Team will compete in Victoria at the provincial championships May 23-25. The year-end show takes place at Strathcona Gardens on May 10, 9 a.m.
The Campbell River Judo club took the team medal at the Mill Bay Shidokai tournament last Saturday. Joshua Lee and Tommy Pfiefer were perfect, winning all of their matches, while Abby Sheehan and Grady Allingham had the highest scores in their divisions. All four captured gold. Lee’s efforts w e re p a rticularly outstanding as he totally
dominated all four of his opponents. A silver medal went to Kristian McFarlan in his first competition. Brody Warner and Jake Misky also earned silver. Bronze medals were won by Marcus Petersen, Luke Penhall, Linden Hicks, Jacob Hicks, Olivia Sheehan and Jordann Warner. On the basis of medal count, Campbell River was deemed the top club and earned the team trophy. Other participating clubs included Victoria, Collwood, Nanaimo and Mill Bay.

GOLF Weekly Adjusting golf swing gets easier Golfers rejoice! Those dreaded slices or hooks could become a thing of the distant past thanks to adjustable clubs and drivers. In addition to helping improve accuracy, adjustable clubs also lighten the load in your golf bag. With a few twists of a wrench or even turning the shaft of the driver itself, golfers can adjust the face angle, loft and lie angle of the driver to hit the ball farther and straighter. Golfers can make small adjustments to create the right loft and improve distance without having to purchase a new club or visit a club fitter. Many club manufacturers now offer adjustable drivers and other clubs. According to an informal poll on Golf.com, 34 percent of the 2,337 respondents owned an adjustable driver by the end of 2011. The ability to upgrade shafts has also become popular as golfers respond to what the pros are
doing. Adjustable golf clubs enable golfers to walk out onto the course with one driver and a few different shafts. With a couple of clicks from a wrench, a person can have an entirely new driver. That cuts down on the equipment that needs to be carried and can fine tune a golfer’s accuracy. These high-tech clubs are corresponding to changes being made to golf balls. Engineers have reduced the spin on golf balls to help the balls travel farther. To do so, golf experts advise that the ball needs to be hit higher into the air. Adjustable drivers can give players the edge they need to produce the right height and trajectory. According to data from golf

club manufacturer TaylorMade, 70 percent of consumers who use the company’s adjustable drivers
adjust their club at least once to get the desired shot. Afterward, 10 to 15 percent of adjustable driver users report further adjustments as they become comfortable with the features. Although golfers can now put
adjustments into their own hands, it is still adviseable to get a professional fitting regardless of which clubs are chosen. A certified club fitter can help a person sort through the myriad options available and make recommendations based on various factors, including the golf ball used. Those who are not fans of adjustable drivers say that the adjustment mechanisms add weight to the drivers, which can compromise efficiency. However, that isn’t stopping larger numbers of golf fans from taking adjustable drivers for a trial run in an effort to improve their game.

Raising a puppy with exposure
By Kimberly Dorrington, owner of Seriously Dogs Inc. • www.seriouslydogs.ca It is very important to raise puppies with the knowledge of puppy development as you will never get this important block of time in the puppy’s development back. It is precious. Once it is gone, it’s gone forever.
At the early stages you can shape the puppy (for the most part) into what you want him or her to be: a sensible and confident dog who can handle whatever the world throws their way. This means you have to dedicate yourself in these early

(That does becomes frustrating and generally Most people keep their puppies not mean you can wait until your makes them even more excited at home, take them for walks puppy is 16 weeks and take him out because you end up around the neighbourhood, and and cram before the window closes. “loading” them, maybe take them to the pet store This is a compounding process simply due to a few times, the vet a few times meant to start at 8-10 weeks. The and some puppy classes. The vast truth is most people simply do not majority of the puppy’s development understand the implications and is spent at home. Most people do consequences of poor socializing. not realize that the first 3 months of They do very little with their raising your puppy sets the tone for dogs and then they don’t how that puppy will likely turn out. understand why their Lab By the time a dog is 5 months old it puppy is an insane beast is the maturity equivalent of a 7 or at 5/6 months old and 8 year old child. Think of all the life gets ridiculously experiences a child has in those first excited when he 8 years of life. Children sees people, other that are encouraged to dogs, squirrels, get out and participate cats, skateboards, and socialize, develop shopping carts, skills that allow air, or a coffee them to cope with cup. Everyone stressful situations, has met an insane develop confidence Lab. Now, this Lab in themselves, and may be a naturally are generally more boisterous, silly dog level headed and by genetic composition. That’s inexperience. This then becomes outgoing than children okay. Nothing wrong with that. It’s a patterned behavior (the dog that are not provided what you do with that when the sees something novel to him, gets multiple opportunities dog is young that makes or breaks excited, starts to pull, you load them to socialize and behavior when he is older. Keeping by trying to stop him from pulling interact with the world him at home and not exposing him and then he gets worse) and the during their early to the world turns everything into dog expects to load when they see development This very a novelty. When you do take him novel things in the universe and concept of socialization out into a very public situation (or the behavior spirals out of control applies to your dog when something novel pops of until you can’t manage it and need when he is a puppy… on your regular walk, like a dog, to get help from a trainer, or jump BUT, you only have kid, cat, bird, etc) everything is so to training tools like pinch collars or THEtoLARGES T months introduce T PEAWESOME that you can’t control head collars or chest harnesses, in in the North Island S E to L EC and FOOD expose him theT ION him. an attempt to reduce the behavior.
Your dog acts this way because you didn’t do your job in the first place. But you are a pet dog owner. How are you supposed to know what you are supposed to do? There are no manuals that come with dogs. And everyone has an opinion. The internet is a very confusing place for a novice. Unfortunately, too confusing, and it usually causes more problems than it fixes. Often people grasp key concepts and totally fail with others. They focus on things like “calming signals” because they figure they can totally control their dog’s behavior by yawning at them. Kudos for trying. But there is just so much more to dogs and their behaviour than that and the picture is so much bigger. There is so much left to learn and to discover that no one will every really know it all. It’s impossible. If you socialize your dog “properly” when they are young, you will very likely not have “issues” as they get older. So, what is “proper socialization”. Well it’s not taking your dog to the dog park everyday
and letting him run wild with a pack of other dogs. That’s not socializing (but what it does -usually- is make your dog obsessed with other dogs).
Socializing your dog does not mean you take him out and meet as many dogs as you can. Socializing means you take your dog out and expose him to the world. Dogs are a part of the world, yes. But they should not be what you make a bee-line for. Other dogs should become as boring to your dog as a bike rack. Other people should be considered flavorless. The general goings on at a mall, people, traffic, noise… all this should be as uninteresting to your dog as it is to you. Your job is to make the world as commonplace to your dog as it is to you. This means EXPOSURE!!!! And lots of it. That dog should be exposed to something away from home and your regular neighbourhood multiple times a week. This can be achieved by simply taking your dog to the grocery store with you and walking around the parking lot and hanging at the entrance for 10 minutes. Obedience is not a race, it’s a journey.

Age equivalents for cats and dogs
Cat and dog owners know that the responsibility of caring for their favorite felines and preferred pooches changes as those animals age. But owners may not know just what constitutes an “aging” pet. Many might go by the popular notion that one dog year is equal to seven human years. But that figure is not quite accurate and is rarely associated with cats, leaving many cat owners to wonder the age equivalents for their furry companions. The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association notes that determining the age equivalent of pets is not as simple as “1 human year = X cat/dog years.” In fact, making such determinations is especially difficult with dogs, whose age equivalents depend on the size of the dog. But the CVMA does calculate pet age in human terms, and the following are the equivalents on which they tend to rely.

Beginner’s guide to reptiles as pets Dogs and cats may be the most popular pets, but reptiles have their share of admirers as well. Reptiles can make great pets, and they may be ideal for children or novice pet owners. Unlike cats or dogs, many reptiles need a very specific environment to thrive. That includes some sort of UV light, a warming stone and particularly hot conditions. Reptiles and amphibians are cold-blooded animals, meaning their body temperatures fluctuate based on the conditions of their environment. They will require an external heating source to stay comfortable. Certain reptiles may be better for beginners than others. Here is a look at some popular reptilian pets and what is necessary to care for them.

recourse. Veterinary health insurance for pets is available at a reasonable cost. These insurance plans can offset the expense of some visits and provide protection if a major illness should befall a dog or cat. Many veterinarians recognize the high cost of pet care and will be willing to work with customers in regard to payments. It is worth talking to the vet to see if a payment plan or alternative appointments can be made to ensure the health of the pet. Vets may be able to suggest over-the-counter medications or certain foods instead of more expensive prescriptions. It’s important to note that diagnosing pet ailments on your own is ill-advised. Certain symptoms may seem to indicate one condition but could actually be something more serious. Pet owners should always confer with a veterinarian if a pet is acting out-of-sorts and not rely entirely on homespun advice. The sooner a vet is seen, the more quickly the pet can get on the road to recovery. Veterinarians provide important services to maintain the health of a vast array of pets. Although there may be inclinations to cut down on vet visits if a companion animal seems well, it is best to keep up with routine care to head off potentially costly treatment and keep the animal healthy and comfortable.

According to a 2011 Bayer Veterinary Care Usage study, companion animal veterinary visits have been declining over the past several years. Study participants reported their pets saw the vet nearly 20 percent less than they did a mere four years ago. The infrequency of vet visits might be traced to a host of factors, including financial concerns stemming from the recent recession, the high cost of veterinary care, increased use of the Internet as a source of information about animal health and modifications in pet immunization schedules. Many vets have moved to a three-year vaccination schedule, wherein pets only have to receive routine shots every three years instead of annually. Some pet owners are choosing to forgo annual checkups because they don’t see the need to visit the vet unless a pet is sick or due for shots. Financial concerns are another factor in the decrease of vet appointments. Though the economy has begun to recover, some pet owners simply do not have the extra income to devote to animal care. While owners may have viable reasons for not taking their animals to see the vet, failure to do so can prove costly down the road. Health checkups for pets can alert owners to potential problems that can be resolved with medication or other therapy. Bearded Dragon: This animal hails from Australia and may grow up to two feet in length, most of which is in the tail. These lizards will need an appropriate housing structure, which should be a 55-gallon tank for the average-sized single male dragon. They require special light bulbs to absorb vitamins. Dragons are omnivorous, so you will have to provide both plant and animal food sources. Even though they come from arid conditions, spray the tank with water each day to provide them with a water source, as they will not drink from a bowl. Dragons are hardy and can endure even if some mistakes in care are made early on. Green Anole: Also known as the American chameleon, green anoles are another popular starter pet. Anoles are inexpensive, which makes them a great choice for first-time reptile owners. Anoles
can be easy to care for if you meet the right requirements. They need a high-humidity environment and daily misting. These reptiles also like to climb, so you will need to prepare the cage accordingly with a tightfitting lid and a structure they can scale. While a male and female and even two females can be kept together, never put two males together, as they will fight and likely kill each other. Gecko: The leopard gecko can be a great lizard for beginners. Thanks to its small size and modest needs, a gecko does not need a large tank to live in. Geckos are also tolerant to handling and can grow accustomed to frequent touching. Keep in mind that geckos are nocturnal, which means they are most active in the evening. Invest in a special reptile light designed for viewing in the dark so that you do not interfere with the animal’s sleep-wake cycle. Also, try not to stress or frighten the leopard gecko. It has the ability to drop its tail if feeling threatened, which can put unnecessary stress on the animal. Newt: Newts are almost exclusively aquatic or require high-humidity levels. You will need a tank with an area of sloped land for eating and sleeping. Another area should be filled with water for immersion. Newts are generally a pet that should be observed rather than handled, as they have sensitive membranes or toxic skin. Colorful newts can be enjoyable to watch and require little care besides water changes and feeding. Reptiles can make interesting and relatively maintenance-free pets. People looking for ideal starter pets may want to skip the furry in favor of the scaly.

Help stop
How to be a
a tragedy
Hundreds of pets are abandoned and suffer needlessly in our community every year. On October 22, 2013 the BCSPCA Campbell River branch launched its two year Spay and Neuter incentive in our community. We received $158,000 from PetSmart Charities of Canada to spay or neuter 1500 owned, feral, or free roaming cats in Campbell River. A little bit over 5 months into the program we have completed just over 500 surgeries, preventing the birth of up to 2,000 kittens and the subsequent suffering and death of up to 75% of those kittens that are born outdoors without human contact. We still have funding to complete surgeries for 1000 more cats in the community and will be continuing to reach out to ensure that every cat in Campbell River is spayed and neutered. If you live in Campbell River and have a cat that needs to be spayed or neutered, or know of a feral cat colony or stray cat that needs to be spayed or neutered, please contact the BCSPCA Campbell River branch at 250-830-4192 or email us at campbellriver@spca.bc.ca for assistance.
eco-conscious
Owning a pet is often a rewarding responsibility. Pets make for loyal friends, and for every late night walk in the cold pet owners must endure, their pets repay those gestures in spades. While the greatest responsibility pet owners have to their pets is to ensure their furry friends live as comfortable and healthy a life as possible, pet owners also have a responsibility to the planet. Eco-conscious pet ownership can have a positive and substantial impact on the environment, and the following are a few simple ways for pet owners to care for their pets and protect the planet at the same time. • Say so long to plastic bags. Picking up pet waste is arguably the worst part of owning a pet, and some pet owners simply want to pick up the waste without giving it a second thought. But how pet owners pick up their pets’ waste can impact the environment. Using plastic grocery bags leftover from trips to the store is bad for the planet, as research has shown that such bags can take as long as 1,000 years to degrade. That means that plastic bag full of pet waste might still be around come the dawn of the next millennium. Instead of using plastic bags to pick up their pets’ waste, pet owners can use biodegradable waste bags
made from materials other than plastic. Such bags might not make the task of picking up pet waste more enjoyable, but they are certainly more eco-friendly, taking far less time to degrade than plastic bags. • Embrace organic pet foods. Pet foods have evolved considerably over the last several decades, and pet owners now have more healthy options at their disposal. Organic pet foods make for healthier alternatives for pets, eliminating the buildup of residues of chemical additives, pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in pets. Such residues have been shown to have an adverse effect on pet health. In addition, a study funded by the European Union found that organic fruits and vegetables have up to 40 percent more antioxidants than non-organic alternatives, adding to the nutritional value of organic pet foods. Organic pet foods also are produced without the use of conventional pesticides or artificial fertilizers, benefiting the planet as a result. Before altering their pets’ diets, pet owners should consult their veterinarian for advice and tips on how to make the transition from traditional foods to organic
alternatives as smooth as possible. • Look for products made from recycled materials. More and more pet products are being made from recycled materials, and pet owners can encourage manufacturers to keep that trend going strong by purchasing such products whenever the opportunity to do so presents itself. Leashes, bowls, toys, and scratching posts for cats are just a few of the many pet products made from recycled materials. Before buying pet products, pet owners should read labels to determine if a given product is made from recycled materials. • Clean green. Like their human counterparts, pets need to bathe. While they might not bathe every day like their owners, pets such as cats and dogs need to be shampooed and cleaned every so often. When buying cleaning products, pet owners should look for nontoxic products. Many traditional pet shampoos or pet beauty products are laced with chemicals, and such ingredients can have an
adverse effect on pet health while also harming the environment. Nontoxic grooming products can still give pets’ coats a beautiful shine, but they do so without taking a toll on the planet or the animal’s health. Pet ownership is a significant responsibility, and pet owners should recognize that part of that responsibility involves caring for their pets in an eco-friendly way.

Every year the Campbell River Community Band’s director Céline Ouellette is faced with the challenge of choosing a theme and finding music for the annual spring concert. The music has to be pleasing to the audience, fun for the band, and, aside from a couple of new scores every year, available in the band’s extensive music library. This spring’s concert, scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. meets all of those requirements. The theme, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles” represents every conceivable mode of transportation from tall ships to rocket ships. The concert, to take place in Carihi’s multi-purpose room, will include two guests. Band member Phil Cassidy (who has been the band’s director in the past) will conduct several numbers. Rick Howell will serve as the Master of Ceremonies. Howell, a retired English and drama teacher, is renowned for the way he introduces the music at the Comox Valley Concert Band concerts. A Campbell River child is being supported to participate in the KidStart Mentoring Program, thanks to the generosity of Chan Nowosad Boates staff members. “In our community there are kids who could use some extra support through relationships with positive role models. For the third consecutive year, some of our staff have come together to support one of those children through KidStart,” said Karen Stewart, a partner in the accounting firm. KidStart is offered by The John Howard Society of North Island (JHSNI) and is Campbell River’s only one-toone mentoring program. This volunteer-based program connects caring adults with children (ages 6-18) for three hours of fun per week. season and another busy season is anticipated. The fun starts with the ladies salmon derby, June 19-23 at Painters Lodge. Jack Hemskerk from Lake Errock in the Fraser Valley has caught three springs already at Discovery Pier. Caught at the end of April, his fish came in at 19, 21 and 21 pounds. Discovery Pier is open for the season and rod rentals are available on a rent per day basis. The pier is a great gathering place for fishing and the scoreboard will start to fill in fast especially in the month of June when the salmon start hitting the spoons cast out from the pier. If you don’t know what to use, the local tackle shops have experienced staff to advise you what the fish are biting. Local freshwater lakes have been fishing reasonably well since the coming of the warmer weather. Anglers have been trolling using spoons and small plugs, and on the fly the

black leech is still fishing strong and getting downdeep trout. When the rain stopped and the wind died down, a small hares ear nymph and black gnat were working on the surface. Ralph Shaw gave me a deer hair fly tied on a number 12 size hook with a deer hair tail and body. The trout will chew this fly up and I had a chance to fish it locally, it really works when presented properly on the water.

Campbell River anglers will be getting their boats on the water in preparation for another great fishing season on the salt. In the Parksville area the spawning herring will have winter springs on the feeding mode. Soon, news will spread that fish are located at Bates Beach and on their way to this area. Some good catches of springs are still being reported at Deep Bay to the south and moving northward at the end of May. In Campbell River, Salmon Point has been producing fish. Around Shelter Point, fishing salmon are being caught in the deeps. At Painters Lodge, the docks were put in April 14, and opening day is set for May 1. A total of 24 guides will be working this year at Painters Lodge and last year over 1,000 salmon were caught. 2013 was an excellent

Paving petition wins Gimme shelter; National garage Kristen Douglas CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
McIvor Lake Road residents will finally get their road paved even though not all of them have demonstrated support for paying for the costly project. The city has agreed to pave the road under the condition that the residents pay 25 per cent of the value of the work and the city will pay the remaining 75 per cent. Tracy Bate, the city’s deputy clerk, said enough McIvor Lake residents have agreed to those terms that the city can go ahead with paving the road. “The city received a petition from five of the eight McIvor Lake Road residents requesting that the city proceed with paving the road,” Bate wrote. “It meets the requirements of the Community Charter in that it represents a majority of the subject properties, having 69 per cent of the assessed value of land and improve-
ments within the local service area.” The city will spend $100,000 of the total project cost while McIvor Lake residents will pay the remaining $25,000. That money will be paid to the city through an annual parcel tax up to a maximum of $669.55 per year for five years starting in 2015 or in a one lump sum payment of up to $3,125 to be paid by Dec. 31, 2014. The project was prompted by McIvor Lake residents who have been petitioning the city since at least 2011 to pave the portion of road to their homes. The three-kilometre road that circles McIvor Lake is paved for the first 500 metres off Highway 28 (Gold River Highway) but the remainder is gravel. The road is used by local residents, BC Hydro and the Campbell River Ski Club. Area resident Dr. Aref Tabarsi has said that in the wintertime the road is in especially bad condition and has described the road as looking like the “surface of the moon.”

In Loving Memory of
Sept. 04, 1936 – April 27, 2014
September 14th, 1967 to May 3, 2005
(Nee Minty)
On April 27, a feisty soul took flight. Iris died peacefully surrounded by her family. She was loved. She passed a mere 13 days after the sudden loss of Robert Joeseph, her loving husband of 60 years. Iris followed Robert from her childhood home in Prince George to many places throughout their colourful life together including, but not limited to Terrace, Sandspit, Comox, Invemere, Sayward, and Campbell River. It's only fitting that she joined him so soon on the next step of their journey together. Iris is survived by her children, Richard, Janine, Robert Jr, Travis, Brett and Trisha. She was predeceased in 2000 by her son Art, whom she always believed she would see again. Iris leaves as her legacy 14 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren. This tiny slip of a woman was a force to be reckoned with when it came to her children. She continues to live on in them in their love of music, and strong sense of independence.

Life skills cheer
Students who visit the Mailman Life Skills House at Timberline Secondary will benefit from a $2,600 donation provided by local Shoppers Drug Marts through its Tree of Life Campaign. Students with special needs learn all sorts of daily skills in the fully-fitted house. Pictured from left are Andrew Caulfield, Brian Amos, Shoppers’ owner and pharmacist Rod Krasman and Brayden Bridges.
The Pier Street Farmers’ Market is back! Campbell River’s one and only Pier Street Farmers’ Market returns to the lot at Fisherman’s Wharf this Sunday, May 4. “Actually we’re not just a farmers’ market,” says manager Jim Creighton. “We’re an ‘arts fair’ as well. “Yes, we do have farmers, lots of great farmers, and we are part of the Eat Local initiative, but we also have a wonderful array of handmade arts and crafts. “The best selection of arts and crafts north of Victoria,” he adds. This market will be open each Sunday, May through September, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., so there’s lots of time to visit, even after church is out. Come down for break-
fast or lunch, or meet a friend for fresh coffee and fresh baking. You’ll be entertained by live local music, a different musician each week. Plus there’s ‘special’ days, for mothers, fathers, kids, families and seniors. Don’t forget ‘Hat Day’ in July, which is a Pier Street original. Throughout the summer they’ll be hosting ‘special guests’, as well. There’s always something for everyone. “One last thing,” says Creighton. “Parking can be a challenge. Why not park downtown and walk the block to our fair? Take an extra five minutes and enjoy your Sunday.” To check out the
week’s events, just look up ‘Pier Street Farmers
Market’ on Facebook and get the goods.
