Horses invaluable for trail upgrade

South Canoe: Spirit and Sam pack 4,200 pounds of rock to refurbish routes. A hush falls over the busy volunteers as pack horses, Spirit and Sam, arrive bearing another 300pound load of rock. Something about the quiet presence of the horses seemed to add to the overall sense of goodwill during the weekend’s two-day push to improve the trails at South Canoe just east of Salmon Arm. “Each horse carried about 175 pounds a trip,” said Linda Buchanan, president of the Backcountry Horsemen of BC Shuswap Chapter, who estimated the two horses carried a total of 4,200 pounds over the day. “That’s the equivalent of about 16 people a trip,” calculated Sutra Brett and Damon Kent, who coordinated the technical work with fellow trail developers, Jim Maybee and Veda Roberge. What started as a “wouldn’t it be cool if” conversation between the group during a planning session had quickly evolved into a living solution when put to local equestrian trail users. The two horses joined more than 140 people who came out over five volunteer days in April to work on major improvements to the South Canoe trail system. New reroutes, bridges, culverts and signage are helping to open damaged trails, protect streams and improve shared use by horses, hikers and cyclists on what is arguably the Shuswap’s most-visited recreational trail system. Volunteers represented all ages and trail uses, including mountain biking, equestrian, trail running and hiking. South Canoe Trail Stewardship

liaison, Dan Capek, thanked a group of 90 volunteers at Sunday’s event. He acknowledged the remarkable collaboration of so many people, including in-kind sponsorship from the community. “The five days have been a moving expression of what working together as a trail alliance is all about,” said Phil McIntyre-Paul, executive director of the Shuswap Trail Alliance. The Shuswap Trails event calendar has more volunteer days listed throughout the region at www. shuswaptrails.com, including May 16, plus May 23 and 24 for a Trail Building and Maintenance Workshop and May 25. People are also encouraged to share trail maintenance needs through the hotline email at trailreport@shuswaptrails. com.

(Above) Hugo Vanroyen leads his horse Spirit along the trail. The horses hauled 140 pounds of rock each trip, which was a relatively easy and environmentally friendly way to transport the materials.

Call before digging Bueckert, Cooper & Co. Springtime marks the unofficial start of gardening season across British Columbia. It’s also traditionally the time of year when utilities such as FortisBC see a spike in the number of calls to repair damage to its underground natural gas pipes. Last year, 563 Salmon Arm residents called BC One Call, but there were still 16 pipeline damages. According to FortisBC, 99 per cent of the damage to its natural gas system is caused by third parties such as construction crews, contractors and homeowners. Even the smallest damage could require thousands of dollars of repair work and shut down service to other customers in the area. Before you put your shovel into the ground, FortisBC encourages homeowners to call BC One Call at 1-800-474-6886 or visit bconecall.bc.ca

Exhibition features art of storytelling Across the centuries, stories have been told in a myriad of ways. The Shuswap Arts Council explores The Art of Storytelling in the 21st Century in a special twomonth exhibition, which opens with a reception at 7 p.m. Friday, May 2 at the art gallery. The exhibition features original works by local authors inspired by the magic of storytelling, daily readings from local authors and daily visits from members of this community’s own living library. It also features interactive and collaborative displays. Put yourself in the story with a giant book, climb through a book tunnel or pen your 140-character contribution to the live@storysaga twitter story which will be published as an e-book when the exhibition closes. This multi-media exhibition extends beyond the walls of the arts centre with sculptural reading chairs at select public locations for your reading pleasure, complete with built-in books. Just like any good story, be sure to expect a few surprises along the way. As the show runs for the last two months of school, year-end class visits are encouraged. For more information or to book a class visit, call 250-832-1170 or visit www.salmonarmartscentre.ca. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is by donation.

If small doses of smutty innuendo offend you, give Shuswap Theatre’s latest offering a miss. But, if you are in the mood to laugh until the tears are rolling, make sure to see the adult-only Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). Directed by longtime theatre member Evelyn Birch, this hilarious romp through the bard’s large (often bawdy) body of work is well-played in Monty Pythonesque fashion by Nathan Zwicker, Uther Radcliffe and Marcus Smith. The chemistry between these merry makers is great. This is Shuswap Theatre’s final Mainstage production of the year and their entry into the 2014 OZones and should do well. The play rolls out at 7:30 p.m. May 1-3 and 8 to 10 at 7:30 p.m. A matinee goes Sunday, May 4 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets at Intwined Fibre Arts on Hudson Avenue or at the door.

Public consultation might be wise Should the public be consulted when governments are planning contentious changes in legislation? And if so, should the governments heed the public’s opinions? The federal government’s “Fair Elections Act” triggered public outrage as it is seen as anything but fair. The provincial government’s plans to monkey with land use by “updating” the Agricultural Land Reserve and changing the management of forest tenures have alarmed both political friends and foes. Critics of the Election Act see it as a plan to tip the scales in favour of the Conservative party. B.C.’s proposals would make drastic changes to the land. The BC Agriculture Council (representing 14,000 farmers) is among the critics of Bill 24 (ALR changes). After listening to this group, Norm Letnick, B.C.’s agriculture minister, says he is open to input and would consider a rewrite. However, B.C.’s Core Review Minister Bill Bennett, who crafted the bill, indicated it will pass as is during the current legislative session. It will be interesting to see who prevails. Jim Snetsinger, B.C.’s former chief forester, is leading the brief consultation process on forest tenure. There are no public sessions planned. While most agree there are many issues to deal with in the aftermath of the mountain pine beetle epidemic, environmentalists, retired professional foresters, ordinary people and even Don Kayne, CEO of the giant Canfor Corporation, are questioning both the province’s planned solution and the limited consultation process. The Fair Elections Act has huge implications for the integrity of our electoral system, but a new government could reverse it. The province’s plans for farmland and forests are a different matter. The impacts will last a long, long time. Wouldn’t it be fair (wise?) to allow citizens to have some say in planning the province’s future? -Williams Lake Tribune

OpiniOn

derby set to return for Father’s day It would be an understatement to say that I have been looking forward to spring and the beginning of fishing season. Having said that, I also cannot believe that my annual sturgeon fishing trip on the Fraser has come and gone. This year’s fishing was beyond belief. We managed to get at least one fish to the boat everyday. On the last day we brought four to the boat. They were all in the six to seven foot, 250 to 300 pound range. The thing that made it all so amazing was that one of my fish sounded twice. It just came sailing out of the water and rolled right in front of me. If I hadn’t been so busy hanging on for dear life, I might have been able to warn Cory – my fishing partner, guide and jet boat owner/operator – so that he could grab his Go-Pro and video the whole thing, but it all happened so fast. And yet, for those seconds while it was happening, everything sort of happened in slow motion. All I know is that it was pretty amazing and pretty exciting.

The GreaT OuTdOOrs James Murray It’s also hard to believe that the 18th Annual Salmon Arm Kid’s Fishing Derby is just around the corner. At least the water levels on Shuswap Lake are on the rise and last weekend I saw a couple of pretty good-sized carp swimming around in the waters at the end of the docks at Marine Park. Everything is in place and ready to go on Father’s Day, June 15. The derby is open to all children 12 years of age and under and there is no cost to enter. Registration takes place Sunday morning, beginning at 6 a.m., at the end of the wharf, and the only restrictions are that each child must be accompanied by an

adult, and each child must wear a life-jacket or PFD. As in past years, there will be some life-jackets available for children who do not have one. Only coarse fish are eligible for trophies and prizes, and fish must be caught and played by the child. Adults, however, can assist in netting the fish. An awards ceremony will take place immediately following the derby at the end of the wharf, where the trophies and major prizes will be handed out. The angler who catches the largest fish will receive the Salmon Arm Savings and Credit Union - W. J. (Bill) Murray Memorial Trophy, an IM-6 graphite rod and reel outfit and a $200 RESP bond. They will also get to take their whole family on an all-expenses paid, weekend fishing trip to Beaver Lake Lodge which will include accommodations, boat and motor and $100 worth of groceries. Second and third place winners will receive trophies, rod and reel outfits and RESP bonds. The angler who lands the first fish of the derby will

receive the Westside Stores Trophy, a rod and reel outfit, a $100 Rotary Club sponsored RESP bond and a $100 gift certificate from Westside Stores. And the angler who manages to catch the most fish throughout the course of the morning will receive the City of Salmon Arm Trophy, a rod and reel outfit, a $100 Rotary Club sponsored RESP bond, as well as a one-year pass to the swimming pool. Two anglers who catch fish closest to predetermined “secret weights” will each win a brand new shiny mountain bike. This year there will also be the special Parent Appreciation draw prize. Adults receive one draw ticket for each child they register. At the awards ceremony, one lucky person will win $500 worth of groceries for bringing their kid out to the derby. There will also be a whole whack of other great prizes given out throughout the derby. Who knows, there might even be a few good fish stories to be told afterwards.

Project had many benefits As a resident of Chase, I am dismayed and disappointed that Pinnacle Energy is abandoning their plan to locate here. I thought that it was an opportunity to revitalize the community with a core of younger residents. The irony here is the inclusion of Chase in the “Project Comeback BC,” a concept to attract younger people back to the home of their youthful roots. Then, with a quality of insouciance, promptly drive away the one industry that is willing to locate and give these

younger people hope. Hang your heads in shame. Chase is not a bedroom community to Kamloops or Salmon Arm. Granted, some residents of Chase commute to these other centers due to the lack of employment in Chase. At best, Chase is a resort community with a purported population of roughly 2,500 people. Half of these leave Chase in October for the warm and sunny climes of Arizona, returning at the beginning of April. To the self-serving naysayers think that

Chase is pollution free, it just isn’t so folks. Chase is not pollution free. Many trains pass by daily, all engines exhausting copious amounts of nitrogen oxides. Some of these trains are coal trains, rendering coal dust to the atmosphere as evidenced by the black accumulations found on cars and decks of homes situated adjacent to the rail right of way. These same naysayers have the audacity to suggest that council re-zone the property again. They also have

the indignity to postulate their belief that the owners of the property should make good by turning the property back into residential for community – approved housing. Not to mention the grandiose ideas of a retirement center, or perhaps a trade or art school! I ask, how about a prison – would that sanctify your minds? Dennis Youchezin, Chase

Students get high grades in health challenge Sorrento Elementary School students placed third in B.C. and sixth in Canada for the 60 Minute Kids Club Health Challenge, which ran from January to the end of March. For 60 days, the students tracked their health habits – how much water they drank, minutes of exercise, fruit and veggies eaten, and hours slept. And they received bonus points for minutes of reading and thinking positive thoughts. North Canoe and Silver Creek schools also took part in this great challenge. This foundation of physical fitness and healthy nutrition will assist in enhancing children’s quality of life as research shows that children and adults who are active and eat healthy decrease their risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, type 2 diabetes and some types of cancers, notes the national program’s website.

Participation in this program is all about having fun and getting active, and should not be considered as a weight loss program. “Your school has made the move to help its students become more active,” notes a pamphlet promoting the challenge. “As parents, you can help your kids by supporting them as they undertake

Connecting with high speed Residents throughout the Shuswap will soon have faster Internet access, thanks to the B.C. Broadband Satellite Initiative, MLA Greg Kyllo announced recently. He says the B.C. government is committed to spending up to $2 million to make access to satellite-based high-speed Internet more affordable for British Columbians in remote areas who don’t have access to traditional broadband Internet. “Without a doubt, so much of our day-to-day communication takes place through the Internet,” Kyllo said. “Connecting all rural and remote British Columbians to high-speed Internet by 2021 is a priority for our government. This announcement is certainly a big step towards achieving this goal.” Residents will be eligible for the initiative in communities throughout the Shuswap include Sorrento, Tappen, Blind Bay, Eagle Bay, Lee

Creek, St. Ives, Anglemont, Magna Bay, Scotch Creek, Celista, Salmon Arm, Canoe, Sicamous, Malakwa, Mara, Swansea Point, Grindrod, Falkland and Armstrong. The program is the result of a partnership between the provincial government, Xplornet Communications and local installers. British Columbians who don’t have traditional wireless or landline broadband solutions available can receive funding assistance of up to 50 per cent of installation and set-up costs, up to a maximum of $250. “Our government’s goal is to see every British Columbian have access to affordable high-speed Internet by 2021,” says Kyllo. Dr. Barragan additionally reported in an interview that in combination with the supplement “children could reduce the dose of their Methylphenidate by up to 50 per cent.” Given the increasing number of new ADHD diagnoses, the possibility of a natural treatment alternative for their child is comforting news. Many parents whose children have taken Equazen have been thrilled with the results noticing major improvements in their child’s symptoms and behaviour. Lori Wiley from Kitchener, Ontario saw a marked improvement in her six-

But even more interesting was that when combining the supplement with traditional treatments, children experienced significantly less side effects. Their mood improved, their appetite came back and their anxieties decreased. I strongly recommend this treatment to any parent with children that need help with concentration, learning or managing their ADHD symptoms,” reported Dr. Eduardo Barragan, Pediatric Neurologist and ADHD expert at the Hospital Infantil de México Federico Gomez (Barragan et al 2013).

cause it’s the first time a natural treatment (Equazen) has been compared to conventional ADHD treatments and was found to be surprisingly effective. In the study, children with ADHD who took the fish-oil/ evening primrose oil preparation in combination with conventional ADHD treatments experienced less side effects of Methylphenidate. When children took this supplement in place of Methylphenidate, they also significantly increased their concentration levels and reduced their ADHD symptoms. “We were surprised to see how effective Equazen was

Every year more and more kids are being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In Canada, over five per cent of children aged four to 17 have ADHD and the numbers are growing. As a result, there’s mounting concern with parents that their children may be over diagnosed and that the consequences and side effects related to typical ADHD drugs may outweigh their benefits. While conventional ADHD treatments help many kids to improve their focus of attention and their impulsivity, often they also have to deal with the side effects they bring. These side effects can range from trouble sleeping, mood swings, to loss of appetite and headaches. However, there’s exciting news for parents with children diagnosed with ADHD coming in the form of recently published findings of a new breakthrough clinical study on the successful treatment of ADHD published in the Journal of Attention Disorders. The study is considered a breakthrough by medical experts be-

Even the simplest tasks are emotionally draining, so to find a natural health supplement that actually produces results like this feels like a miracle. Equazen needs to be on every parent’s list for providing that road to success for their child with ADHD,” she explained. The rich legacy of Dr. Mary Thomas SHUSWAP PASSION Jim Cooperman It is rare for a Shuswap resident to achieve provincial or national recognition for the contributions they have made to society. Famed Neskonlith elder and ethnobotanist Mary Thomas is one of these select few that will be remembered in history. And in 2010, some 490 hectares in the Wap Creek valley, known for both its spiritual and traditional use values, was protected as a cultural heritage feature in honour of Mary and her husband Frank Krauchi who passed away in 1997. Mary was born in Salmon Arm in 1918, and fortunately much of her childhood was spent with her grandparents, from whom she learned a great deal about her Secwepemc culture. The joy of her childhood changed abruptly when she was made to attend residential school in Kamloops, where she was forbidden to speak her language. “And we were told never to practice nor to believe the spirituality of our people. It was taboo,” recalled Mary many years later. When Mary’s first husband died young, she married again and

they had 15 children. After her husband, Mark, returned from the Second World War, his demeanour changed due, in part, to alcohol, and she suffered abuse until he met an untimely end on the railway tracks. Five years later, she moved to Kelowna with Frank, who became her lifelong partner. It was not until she was asked to help prepare some traditional materials for her youngest daughter Bonnie’s class in school, that Mary began to find meaning in her life. The school project led to work with a museum, and she began interviewing elders and learning more about Secwepemc culture. Fortunately, she could speak Secwepemctsin and soon she learned how to make baskets, mats, moccasins and how to tan deer hides. The more she learned about her culture, the more she began to change, which she called her “journey to healing.” From 1970 until she died in 2007, Mary worked tirelessly to promote the Secwepemc language and culture. By 1977, Mary had returned to the Shuswap and, with the knowledge she gained from the elders and the memories she had from her childhood, she became an authority on traditional plants and their uses. As an expert, she became more aware of the environmental degradation occurring near her home, especially in the Salmon River val-

ley. Not content to ignore the growing problems, Mary worked with others to create the Salmon River Roundtable, which helped to restore many kilometres of riparian area. Her work was not limited to environmental issues, as she was also a pioneer in early childhood development and improving the lives of young people. In 2004, her work earned her the Medal for Exceptional Contributions to Early Childhood Development from the Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development. And the BC Aboriginal Child Care Society now awards two Mary Thomas Scholarships each year to the two top Aboriginal early childhood education students. Mary worked on forestry committees, taught at Okanagan College, provided advice in her community and assisted University of Victoria ethnobiologist Nancy Turner with her research on traditional plants. Whenever Mary spoke, she conveyed feelings of spirituality and sincere love, and everyone who listened could sense her closeness to nature, her years of wisdom and the connection she had to her heritage. As her daughter Bonnie remembers, “Mary’s primary goal was to instill the need for everyone to respect each other as everyone is here for a purpose. And she emphasized the needs for education, for sharing and for making a contribution

instead of pursuing the almighty dollar.” In 1998, Mary was one of the keynote speakers at an ecological restoration conference in Victoria that helped energize this movement. To a rapt audience, Mary spoke with simplicity and humility about the devastation she had witnessed and the intense need for everyone to work together to heal the land. Just as new research was coming out about the value of birch trees to the health of the forest, Mary explained how sad she was to see birch and berry bushes cut down in the forestry plantations. She described how they used the tree’s nourishing sap for syrup and the bark for baskets, and how the resulting leaf litter nourishes the soil and the forest. There is not room to list all the awards that Mary has received. Some key achievements include being the first Native American to receive the Indigenous Conservationist of the Year award from the Seacology Foundation and the recipient of two honorary degrees one from the University of Victoria and another from the University of North Carolina. Mary’s vision is now behind the plan by the Switzmalph Cultural Society to build a cultural centre. The Society currently operates a heritage village near the Salmon River mouth where events are held to celebrate traditional culture. Thankfully, the

series of lectures on native culture that Mary gave at the University of Victoria were published as The Wisdom of Mary Thomas, and the Society plans to have it reprinted soon, as there are currently no copies available.

Smart meter refusal fees trimmed By Tom Fletcher BLACK PRESS

BC Hydro customers who refuse to part with their mechanical power meters will continue to pay $32.40 a month for manual meter readings, with a refund on the balance of the $35 they’ve been paying since December.

The B.C. Utilities Commission ruled on BC Hydro’s smart meter opt-out fees Friday, after an order from the B.C. government required the regulator to approve fees covering all of BC Hydro’s costs. A $20 a month charge will continue for BC Hydro customers who accept a digital meter

with the radio transmission function turned off. The commission cut the one-time fee for disabling the meter radio to $22.60, far below BC Hydro’s proposed $100. Most of BC Hydro’s nearly two million customers now have fullyfunctioning smart meters, which send daily

readings to a collection network and signal when power goes out and comes back on. BC Hydro spent nearly $1 billion to upgrade its grid, forecasting savings from automatic meter reading to faster detection of outages and elimination of power theft from meter bypasses.

Be creative and green at the same time!

SPRING Garden

It is easy and fun to rescue all kinds of objects destined for the landfill and modify their purpose for your home. What a great way to renovate, all while being eco-friendly at the same time! “Repurposing” entails standing in front of a feature of your home that you no longer want and asking yourself what else you could do with it. Finding the answer means truly setting aside its initial purpose; you have to forget about its original form and role in order to give free rein to your imagination. It is a great creative exercise for your brain, one that can give some interesting results. Here are a few repurposing projects: • transform a door into a low table • convert glass bottles into light fixtures • turn kitchen utensils into a lamp • remove the drawers of a dresser to make bookshelves

• dress up a bucket with fabric and decorative ribbons and fill it with flowers • turn an old chest of drawers into a planter • create garden furniture with bricks painted in your choice of colour • transform a workbench into a kitchen work surface There is no shortage of ideas. And if you don’t succeed at first, don’t hesitate to give it another go — the more you try, the better you’ll become. So, don’t discard your old stuff, just repurpose it into something new and useful.

Lee Creek proposal contentious By Barb Brouwer

MARKET NEWS STAFF

For or against, the time for public input is over. Following second reading and a public hearing regarding a bylaw amendment that would change Lee Creek from rural residential designation to secondary settlement in the area’s official community plan, the amendment will go before the Columbia Shuswap Regional District board on May 15. Once a public hearing has been held, the directors do not consider any further information from the public. But directors should be well aware of public sentiment. The public hearing on the contentious issue took place in Scotch Creek April 15 and was attended by not only North Shuswap director Larry Morgan, but directors from South Shuswap, Rural Sicamous and FalklandSilver Creek-Ranchero. Also in attendance at the afternoon hearing were CSRD chief administrative officer Charles Hamilton and several planning staff. Some residents continue to be vocal in their opposition and are

Anything Is Possible

n Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors are being asked to consider the controversial proposal to amend the official community plan in order to change Lee Creek from rural residential to secondary settlement designation. worried the amendment will open their community up to rampant development. Lee Creek resident Cathy Hopland is disappointed the meeting was held at 1 p.m. on a weekday, at a time of year when what she estimates as 80 per cent of waterfront property owners are seasonal and unable to attend. “What was pointed out by a number of people was that the people who are opposed to the bylaw were not necessarily opposed to Gateway not having their problems solved,” she says of a large, stalled development. “Many

people feel the secondary settlement designation was pushed through so Gateway could change from shared-interest to strata, which would make it easier to then buy and sell the properties and be able to get mortgages, which is difficult with shared interest.” Hopland says the other point that was brought up often at the meeting is that the OCP is less than five years old and at the time CSRD hired a consulting firm to do an in-depth study. “The recommendation was Lee Creek remain rural, with Scotch Creek remaining the

source for services,” she says. “The really important thing is Lee Creek was considered to have a very sensitive foreshore, particularly right in front of Cottonwood and Roderick-Haig Brown Park.” Veronica Bene, another Lee Creek resident, is also opposed to the redesignation. “If it changes to secondary settlement, they can get their zoning more easily,” she said, noting Lee Creek has very sensitive habitat. “There is a downturn in economy but I think there’s those in the North Shuswap, developers, that are unwill-

Regional district board to decide May 15 Continued from A19 North Shuswap Chamber of Commerce president Dave Cunliffe agrees that giving Lee Creek a secondary settlement designation would pave the way for strata development for Gateway, among other projects, but says the move would be good for both property owners and local governments. “There is little to fear about designating Lee Creek as a secondary settlement area. Infill development can go ahead that has similar densities to the existing community,” Cunliffe wrote in a letter to Morgan, supporting the amendment. “It is a fallacy to suggest that communities can remain static and be healthy. Communities either grow or wither and die.” But Bene argues that most residents would rather shut the door on large development. “One of the reasons I am against this is it makes Lee Creek very vulnerable to any kind of development that is allowed under the secondary settlement designation,” she says. “What is wrong with having a rural residential area?” Morgan, meanwhile, says the CSRD has re-

ceived quite a few letters and emails for and against, but the information won’t be available until a report is released. “This has been an issue since before the OCP was finalized four years ago,” he says. “Whatever I say will be used against me and I just think we have the process and we’ll see how it unfolds at the next meeting.” Morgan notes there are secondary settlement areas throughout the North Shuswap, including Seymour Arm, Magna Bay, Celista

and Anglemont, with Scotch Creek remaining the only primary settlement area. “We have 275 homes in Lee Creek, not including Gateway and Cottonwoods, and they want services such as a firehall; and a firehall is contingent on it being a secondary settlement area,” he says, noting Magna Bay, Celista and Anglemont are smaller but are also secondary settlement areas. Morgan was pleased about the “unprecedented attendance by staff and directors” including Rhona Martin,

Paul Demenok, Rene Talbot, along with his alternate director Bob Misseghers and two councillors from Chase. “It’s very unusual; I’ve never seen it before,” he says, agreeing there was angry response from the public, who believed a decision regarding a South Shuswap development was made by a director who had no real knowledge of the project. “Directors and senior staff have to be involved when talking about these critical issues.”

FRANCIS, HILLAS Hillas Francis passed away suddenly & unexpectedly, but peacefully, on April 22, 2014 at home in Summerland in the presence of his wife Barb. Hillas was born in 1932 on his family farm in Belloy, Alberta to his parents Walter & Susan Francis, who were homesteaders. A true child of the depression, he was proud of his Irish heritage, and was made of hardy stock and had a strong work ethic. Hillas showed his family the importance of working hard and being generous. He was well admired by his community for his interest in always helping others – from volunteering with C.O.P.S., a long time member of the Masonic Lodge, as well as a Kinsman, to constantly offering help with neighbours & friends with any project on their house or yard. He was a wonderful handyman and could basically put together anything with his hands. Hillas has left behind his dear wife Barbara (married 57 1/2 years), daughters Susan (Russell) & Anne, grandchildren Amy, Lia and Leilan, and great grandchild Riley, as well as sister Elizabeth, and numerous cousins, nieces & nephews & many dear friends. Predeceased by sister Helen and grandson Gabriel. He will be sadly missed, but held close in our hearts. “May the road rise up to meet you, May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rain fall soft upon your fields, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of his hand” No service by request. Private Irish wake to follow later.

Albert was born to his proud parents Bror and Selma 3 months early weighing in at 4 ½ pounds. There was very little medical help but his mother did the best she could under the careful watch of the local midwife to monitor his beginning. In the spring of 1928, the family moved to Vancouver where they bought a home and Albert’s Dad began working for the city. The depression meant that money was scarce, so in 1933, the family moved to the Cariboo where they homesteaded. Three years later, word came that Albert’s Great Uncle Peter was ill and wanted the family to move back to Malakwa and take over his farm. The family packed their belongings in the Cariboo and Albert and his father travelled to Malakwa by horse and covered wagon. The rest of the family came later. Farm life was hard work; cows to milk, pigs to feed, wood to chop and growing seed potatoes. While growing up on the farm, Albert was very fond and good to his sisters. Albert met Faye at a dance in Canoe in 1952. He spotted this young girl sitting by herself in a corner and went over to make small talk. She didn’t have a way back to Enderby, so Albert offered to give her a ride. Over time Albert was making many trips back and forth from Malakwa to Enderby. On December 4, 1954 they were married in Vernon. They made their home in Malakwa and lived there for the next 27 years. Albert worked for the Blomquist Brothers as a faller and loved the forest and had a deep appreciation for nature. In 1981 Albert and Faye moved to Enderby. Their home was always open to friends and family and the coffee was always on. He was born with a natural talent for music and loved to play and sing. Grandpa was a quiet and very well respected man. He was kind and patient with a gentle heart. A man of few words but when he spoke one stopped to listen. Our Dad’s Christian faith helped him face the challenges of Alzheimer’s with grace and courage until his passing. Interment was held at Malakwa Cemetery on Saturday, April 26, 2014 with a Memorial Service following at the Sicamous Senior’s Centre. Arrangements entrusted to Fischer’s Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd., Salmon Arm (250) 833-1129. STEINWAND, ALFRED October 26, 1938 – January 2014 A Celebration of Life for the late Alfred Steinwand will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. from Lakeside Community Church. A Reception will follow the service. Arrangements entrusted to Fischer’s Funeral Services & Crematorium Ltd., Salmon Arm. Email condolences and share memories through Alfred’s obituary at www.fischerfuneralservices.com. MCPHERSON, GORDON September 16th, 1952 – April 19th, 2014 We loved a great man. A husband, father, papa, brother, son, cousin, uncle and a deeply cherished friend. He loved us all, and we loved him. He was raised in Medicine Hat, started his family with Yvonne in Lethbridge, and moved to Salmon Arm with Yvonne, Michelle and Michael in 1987. His grandchildren, Seth, Ethan and Evan (Michael and Valene) and Keira and Ryder (Michelle and Corey Spence) put a sparkle in his eye and kept him young and vibrant! We have comfort in knowing that he lived his life with joy and had many wonderful memories with family and friends. A friendly and social man, he made friends wherever he went and impacted them all. His welcoming smile, strong yet so gentle hands, and warm embrace meant so much. He passed doing one of his most favourite things, snowmobiling, which he enjoyed with many friends and family in Salmon Arm. He had a great day on the mountain! Who would have known that in a split second he would be gone. We will think fondly back on our memories and celebrate his life on Saturday, May 3rd at 2PM at Bower’s Funeral Home. A gathering will follow. Online memories may be shared through Gordon’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com Arrangements are in the care of Bowers Funeral Home and Crematorium, Salmon Arm, BC CHRISTOPHER JOHN DABNER 1952 - 2014 Christopher John Dabner of Kamloops, BC, passed away on April 25, 2014 at the age of 61. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynda Dabner; mother, Hilda Dabner; sons, Jamie Dabner (Tera) & Samuel Dabner (Amy); grandchildren, Kennedy and Krew; brother, Phil Dabner; mother-in-law, Ruth Stirling; nephew, Jason Dabner (Erika); grand nieces, Zoe and Ava; sister-in-law, Kathie Cross (Woody). Chris also leaves his family in Plymouth, Devon, England and Malton, Yorkshire, England. Chris was predeceased by his father, Kenneth Samuel Dabner. Chris was born in Plymouth on December 03, 1952. He moved to Canada with his family and attended high school at Norkam, where he made lifelong friends. Chris and his wife Lynda travelled extensively for a few years before returning to Kamloops. He was actively involved in the construction industry for years. Chris built the family cabin at Shuswap Lake with the help of his wife, kids and in-laws Ruth and Peter. Spending time at ‘the lake’ with family and friends was universally known to be his favourite thing to do. Chris’s family will host a celebration of life at a later date. Lynda and her sons would like to say a special thank you to the Kelowna Thoracic Clinic and Dr. Kruger. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Hospice.

Mother’s Sunday Day May 11th Give Mom a break from the kitchen

E

ven though moms work hard at their jobs and have busy lives of their own, in many families they are still the heart and soul of the home. And because the kitchen is usually the centre of home life, it is often where we find them. Day after day, mothers browse recipes, plan the grocery shopping, and work at the stove to prepare nutritious meals for spouse and

children — not to mention the effort it takes to cater to all the different dietary needs and tastes of various family members. The chief cook’s role is no small one! Yes, mothers deserve to be honoured for their efforts and their devotion. It is often they who make sure the lunch boxes are packed with appetizing and balanced foods; it is usually they who

prepare snacks, plan birthday parties, and cater to guests. Mothers are the ones who ensure that everything is cleaned up once the family’s ravenous appetites have been satisfied. And for the everyday evening meal, it is they who try to turn out tasty dinners that won’t leave the family complaining — and they can tell you, too, that meal preparation usually takes

more than the 30 minutes the recipe books say it should take! This Mother’s Day, find a way to show your favourite chief cook and bottle washer your appreciation. Does she have a favourite meal of her own? Then why not get the family together and prepare it for her. Or tell her she’s banned from the kitchen for the day, and take her out to her favour-

ite restaurant. Whether you treat her to a chore-free day, a festive meal concocted at home, or a meal out with her loved ones, the lady of the house is sure to be touched by all the attention.

recipes. These heartfelt moments bind families together and create unforgettable memories for all concerned. These women have done so much to keep their families functioning and well over the years, as much as they were able to. So, let’s give mothers the gratitude they deserve on this special day.

R E S TA U R A N T

Mother’s Day

C

elebrating Mother’s Day always starts by paying special attention to our beloved mothers or mothersin-law. Three or four generations of mothers in the same family can sometimes take part in this celebration. Mother’s Day is the perfect occasion to put into perspective the critical role played by each link of this uninterrupted chain. Many senior women lead active, busy lives, while others are less energetic and face loneliness or illness. At this stage of life, grandmothers can be restored with a simple telephone call, a visit, or an outing with the family. After all, the presence of loved ones is the most beautiful of gifts. Mother’s Day is a time to appreciate motherhood and to spend some quality time with these women who are linked to us by both love and blood. Mothers and grandmothers can forget their age for a little while when pleasure is on the menu. A mother’s heart lights up with love when a child asks her for a small favour, even if her active parenting days are far in the past. A senior can hold off the wearying effects of Father Time by sharing family stories, singing a few favourite songs, and sharing some old family
