Jill Fitz Hirschbold’s photographs carry the viewer into the West Coast world of waves, rust, and colour. The Saanich artist has owned a camera for as long as she can remember and for her, it’s the perfect tool to express her feelings about life on the coast. Upon entering Hirschbold’s Cadboro Bay home/studio – one of dozens featured during Saanich’s Artist Studio Tour this month – the senses are assailed by vibrant, textured photographs that demand closer inspection. Though some subjects are identifiable, many are elusive and ask that the observer to abandon conventional perception. Hirschbold’s artistic philosophy is – like her photographs – somewhat abstract. “I imagine all the stories and energies held within objects,” she says. “In old fishing boats I see all the years at sea and all the different people that have been on board. Old boats can actually tell you a lot.” Hirschbold moved to Victoria 25 years ago to study environmental science at the University of Victoria. She fell in love with the city and never left. A licensed SCUBA dive-master, she first decided to get serious about photography with the purchase of an underwater camera, which she used to document a world beneath the waves. “I’d always had a camera, but was just photographing everyday life. The underwater camera was where it all started. My husband and I used to fight over it, but I always won.” The Saanich Artists’ Studio Tours gives art enthusiasts an inside look into artists’ creative

For those who will be dropping by Hirschbold’s studio, they should bring a coffee and prepare for a very enlightening discussion. Her take on art and photography jumps genres and rejects convention. “I like to overlay music onto my photos,” she says, pointing at the different images adorning her walls. “Those two are Bon Iver, and there’s a lot of Pearl Jam around here too.” Clairvoyance is defined as “an ability to perceive matters beyond the range of ordinary

perception” and it might be just the word to describe what Hirschbold sees when she looks through her viewfinder. “For me, photography is a way of capturing a moment of old energy, whether it’s in a sunrise or sunset, an old barge or fishing boat, or a beautifully engineered bridge.” For a full list of studios on the tour now through June1, visit Saanich.ca and search for ‘Saanich artist studio tours’. Mayor Frank Leonard will award the Freedom of the Municipality of Saanich to the 39 Service Battalion tomorrow – a traditional honour dating back to ancient Rome. The battalion, formed in 2010, provides transportation, supplies, repairs, and personnel to the rest of the 3rd Canadian Division units located in British Columbia. “Saanich council is proud to bestow this honour upon the 39 Service Battalion,” said Leonard. “We are grateful for their service to our community and our country.” Two thousand years ago, the designation was given to Roman troops who had gained the trust of the local population. Today, a unanimous vote by a municipal council can bestow the honour on a distinguished unit or individual of the Canadian Armed Forces. editor@saanichnews.com NEW LISTING

SAANICH NEWS - Friday, May 2, 2014

THE CORPORATION OF THE DISTRICT OF SAANICH

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING ON ZONING BYLAW & PERMIT NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that a SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING for the purpose of a PUBLIC HEARING will be held in the SAANICH MUNICIPAL HALL COUNCIL CHAMBERS, 770 Vernon Avenue, Victoria, BC, V8X 2W7, on TUESDAY, MAY 13, 2014 at 7:30 pm, to allow the public to make verbal or written representation to Council with respect to the following proposed bylaw and permit. A. “ZONING BYLAW, 2003, AMENDMENT BYLAW, 2014, NO. 9267” KidsRun offers kids a one- or five-kilometre route and family festival fun at Tillicum on Sunday.

Vale kids walk for Oliver Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

Strawberry Vale’s Team Oliver is learning the value of a good walk, and supporting a Grade 4 classmate and her one-year-old brother this weekend. Team Oliver in the KidsRun Sunday includes Cassaedie Stirling, who inspired her peers, by simply being a strong big sister. Her little brother Oliver Stirling was diagnosed with the nonlife-threatening cancer, retinal blastoma, at 10 months old. “It was very lucky,” said mom Lee Ann Woolford. Most children are diagnosed after symptoms appear, and often lose an eye, she added. Oliver, however, slept with his eyes open much like dad Graeme Stirling, so, on a Friday afternoon they took him to the eye doctor as a precaution. The next Monday they were in Vancouver and on Tuesday Oliver underwent localized chemotherapy in his eye. After four unsuccessful weeks of chemo, doctors surgically placed a central line access to provide another bout of chemo directly into the baby’s bloodstream. They got back from that round in Vancouver last weekend. “We got some good news that the tumour is shrinking,” Woolford said. The family awaits genetic testing results to find out whether the cancer is hereditary or sporadic, and if he has a marker that would indicate he’s susceptible to other cancers. Last Monday, teacher Emma Marley lead her Grade 3/4 class at Strawberry Vale on a fourkilometre walk in 41 minutes, in preparation for KidsRun this weekend. At the beginning of the year it was simply classwork, now walking is a cause.

Oliver and Cassaedie Stirling “Having the kids in her class supporting her and knowing what’s going on, it’s hard as a sibling,” Woolford said. “She has lost a lot of her freedom. She can’t have playdates. We’re not able to go out as much as a family. If (Oliver’s) blood counts are very low, we’re isolating to ourselves so he doesn’t have a risk of getting sick.” KidsRun is a one or five kilometre walk/run alongside a festival feel of family activities including street hockey, face painting, Saanich Fire Truck, mascots, games, barbecue and silent auction. Funds raised through the event will be divided between the pediatric oncology unit at Victoria General Hospital and the B.C. Childhood Cancer Parents Association. “They really wanted to do something, and being young they weren’t quite sure how,” Marley said. “When we learned about this walk we thought it’s perfect, we’ve been walking all year and we can support Cassaedie and her family.” The parents association is a non-profit supporting families who have children with cancer. “All of us on the board are parents who have been on this journey with our children in one way or another,” said Susan Kerr.

Each year about 150 children are diagnosed with a life-threatening cancer and 350 are on treatment at any given time in B.C. “In treatment right now at Victoria General Hospital there’s approximately 25 children,” Kerr said. Another 80 children on Vancouver Island are under long-term follow up classified as three months to 10 years. Key programming includes financial aid. “Some of these funds are food vouchers, gas coupons, phone cards,” Kerr said, adding the majority of families have problems meeting basic necessities. There’s also family support through seemingly simple programs for the heart, such as arts and crafts night or outdoor adventures. KidsRun Victoria is put on by Sole Sisters Victoria and volunteer organized. Since 2010, KidsRun Victoria has raised more than $60,000. This year, 50 per cent of money raised will be used for purchasing needed equipment for the paediatric oncology clinic at Victoria General Hospital, and 50 per cent will support the new Victoria chapter of the British Columbia Childhood Cancer Parent’s Association. BCCCPA is a registered non-profit society who’s main purpose is to enhance quality of life for children with cancer and their families. “We’re really proud of Cassaedie doing this run,” Woolford said. “It creates awareness of childhood cancers. It’s good for us, as a community and an Island.” The event runs from 10 a.m. to noon on May 4 at Tillicum Centre. Cost is $25 for adults, $20 for kids. Retired school teacher Diane McNay stands next to a framed Steve Nash basketball jersey at École Arbutus Global Middle School where she taught Nash in junior high.

Nominate a great teacher Like many professions, teaching has changed a lot over the years. As Black Press continues our Great Teachers series, a celebration of educators presented with partners Staples and Thrifty Foods, we look at positive changes that affect how our children learn and look at the world. Diane McNay, the jovial president of the Lower Vancouver Island Retired Teachers Association, began her career in 1968 and retired in 2002 at 56. She taught at several schools around Greater Victoria, including the last 20 at Arbutus Junior High in Saanich. “I think what has changed the most has been curriculum development,” McNay says of the switch from an emphasis on memorizing facts and figures. “In social studies, which was my area, that was the best change that was ever made. It really made you think about what you would be doing and gave you more scope, more meaningful things that would make a lot of difference to the kids.” Changes to the way topics are approached parallels advances in technology and access to information. Parents came through an era in which assignments went from being written out – to being written and researched on a computer. McNay says the Internet has been both a blessing and curse for educators. “There is a tendency among students to sort of leap to Wikipedia the minute they want any

information on anything,” she says. “But if the school has a really good teacher-librarian, they can teach students and teachers about databases and things that will make teaching more effective.” Read an extended version of this story online at vicnews.com. ddescoteau @vicnews.com

It’s OK to say ‘we’re full’ Concerns have been raised about the adverse environmental affect the residential development at 3750 Ascot Rd. will have on King’s Pond. After the debacle of the clay tennis courts I find it a shame that residents in the Cedar Hill Golf Course area must once again defend their neighbourhood. I live in the Braefoot area and I’m concerned about the impact future housing in-filling would have on contaminated water runoff in our neighbourhood. I have noticed more water pooling in our back yard over the last 26 years due to housing development higher up the hill. The effect on the King’s Pond wetlands would have a greater impact. Saanich has started using natural, grass run off areas for storm drainage in an attempt to filter pollutants before they enter the drainage system; this same approach needs to be maintained around our natural water courses. Reducing the ground water absorption area by building high-density housing can only cause more stress on King’s Pond. King’s Pond is a focal point of our community. It’s not just the immediate neighbourhood that enjoys its beauty. Many of us use it as a destination for our walks, others drive or cycle to enjoy. Please don’t take any chances of ruining this jewel. Convince Saanich council to turn down the developer’s request for a Floodplain Development Permit. As for policy of in-filling for future housing: we don’t have to accommodate everyone, it’s OK to say ‘Sorry, we’re full’. The King’s Pond area is full. Jim Cliff Saanich

Vaccinations not just for kids Dr. Charmaine Enns Guest comment

In the past 50 years, vaccinations have saved more lives than any other health intervention. Vaccines are very safe, safer than therapeutic medicines and far safer than the consequences of the diseases that they protect against. They are also highly costeffective. For example, for every $16 invested into providing the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to children, a life is saved. This can be compared to other effective public health interventions such as driver and passenger air bags, which cost $61,000 per life saved, or smoke detectors in homes at $210,000 per life saved. But vaccines are not just kids’ stuff. Adults need them, too. While some vaccines provide lifelong protection after a short series of shots, certain vaccines need booster doses, most notably tetanus, which should be received every 10 years. Other vaccines are only routinely recommended once one becomes a senior. Young adult women are now being offered the HPV vaccine, which protects against 70 per cent of the causes of cervical cancer. Unlike other vaccines, the

influenza vaccine is given annually. This vaccine is formulated each year based on the types of circulating influenza viruses that are causing the most serious disease. Response to the vaccine is best in healthy individuals and only partially effective in people who are frail, elderly or have significant chronic diseases. This is why it is so important for healthy people who live with or care for those most at risk of severe outcomes from influenza also get the vaccine. If you are travelling abroad, going back to college, pregnant,

entering into a health-care profession or have any chronic underlying health conditions, you should ask your physician or call your local public health unit to find out which vaccines are recommended for you. The best reason to get vaccinated is that it protects you, and it protects the people around you. This is an important concept because vaccinated individuals become a ring of protection around the most vulnerable people in our families and communities, such as infants and children, the elderly and those with chronic diseases. Vaccines have been a powerful tool to reduce disease, disability, death and inequities for people of all ages and in all places. But they can only work if people continue to be vaccinated. Safety Tip: Failing to yield may seem harmless, but it’s one of the top high-risk driving behaviours that leads to crashes. Every day there are many situations where you need to yield to another vehicle, pedestrian or cyclist, so slow down and think about it.

A tire also performs best, lasts longer and provides best fuel economy when its internal pressure is set at a level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, and checked on a regular basis. The tire decal, with optimal front and rear recommended tire pressures, is usually on the driver’s door or door jam. If not, the owner’s manual should give you the information and/or tell you where the tire decal is located. A single under-inflated tire (by about 6 psi /40 kPa) can cause a 3 per cent increase in fuel consumption. Using a grade of fuel with a lower octane rating than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may cause the engine to ping or knock on hard acceleration or when climbing hills, which is not good for the engine! On the other hand, using a higher-octane fuel than your vehicle’s engine needs is generally a waste of money. That said, the pricier fuel may also contain some additional cleaner additives, which is good. Have a great summer and a safe driving vacation.

The safety features of this vehicle are incredible and I think most people would feel very safe driving it.

There is also a lane departure warning and prevention system. Power: A 3.5 litre, 24 valve V6 engine with 265 horsepower and 248 ft-lb of torque powers this vehicle. The transmission is an electronically continuously variable (CVT) with manual shift capabilities. Pump frequency: 10.5/7.6 L/100km (city/highway) 10.9/7.8 L/100km (city/highway) AWD Model Warranty support: 48 month/ 100,000 km Roadworthy: Excellent handling to this vehicle, steering was quick and responsive, and body roll was at a minimum. Even though the engine was more than adequate, providing plenty of power, the CVT transmission was continuing to make adjustments and I found at times sudden bursts of power followed by a hard up shift. Definitely not something I expected with this type of luxury. Verdict: I was excited to drive this vehicle but disappointed by the size of the interior space and performance. The safety features of this vehicle are incredible and I think most people would feel very safe driving it. The 2014 Infiniti QX60 is a luxurious sport utility vehicle that puts safety above everything else. Looks: The QX60 is a very attractive vehicle to these eyes; it has distinctive Infiniti looks. The projector-style headlights flow with the body lines and the fog lights look like they belong instead of an afterthought. The side body lines almost give the appearance of waves moving up the vehicle. LED rear brake lights and center high mounted stoplight sit atop the rear power lift-gate. Chrome accents around the windows give it a sense of elegance. In the cab: The cabin seemed large to me at first, but after climbing in and getting comfortable it is really not that big. If you are a . . . how can I put this delicately? – If you are an amply-proportioned person, really spend some time trying out all of the seat positions. Once in the driver’s seat I found the controls well positioned and easy to operate. I liked the navigation screen with 3D mapping, the monitor offers a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and detects moving objects thus providing more help in backing up in a tight parking lot. It features an 8-way power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, 6 way power front passenger’s seat, 60/40 split folding and sliding second row bench seat that allows easy entry/ exit even with a child seat installed and a 50/50 split folding third row seat that reclines. Toyota went one step further with the 1973 Celica Liftback, a virtual three-quarter-scale replica of the Mustang Fastback. Even the upper crust Aston Martin with its V8 Vantage model of the 1970s went to the Mustang well. The 2015 Mustang still sports design cues from the original 1965 Mustang Fastback. Picking the right ride for your spring cruising Alexandra Straub

There are many different ways to get on the open, or dirt, road. I’ll suggest some new makes and models to consider but by no means are these the be-all-end-all of choices. Cruisers Cruisers have mass appeal because of their low seat heights, generally comfortable ergonomics and ability to get you from point A to B in style. Some models have the foot pegs stretched forward, some don’t. They might not be the most nimble bikes around but they certainly do have mass appeal. Better yet, they come in all different sizes, shapes and displacements making it even more accessible to riders. Bikes: Honda CTX700, Yamaha Bolt, Harley-Davidson Superlow 1200T, Suzuki Boulevard C50 Sport Tourer Want a sportier edge while still maintaining comfort while riding for extended periods of time? Consider a sport touring motorcycle. They’re generally not as heavy or as elaborate as a full on touring bike, so you get the best of both worlds. Bikes: BMW K1300S, BMW K1600GT, Yamaha FJR1300, Honda VFR1200 Touring When asked how I’d describe a touring bike I say – not small. These machines are typically heavy, but come equipped with the technology and luxuries that can take you across the country and further. Their fuel tanks are generally much bigger so you can keep going for longer. Furthermore, storage compartments, relatively speaking, are quite generous. Bikes: Harley-Davidson Electra Glide/Ultra Limited, Honda Goldwing, Suzuki Boulevard C90T B.O.S.S. Dirt Playing in the dirt has never been so much fun. Whether

you’re young or young at heart, dirt bikes are a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Dirt bikes are restricted to the dirt, meaning, unless you have a dual sport bike that has a license plate, you can’t ride them in the road. That said, they’re generally quite affordable and are extremely durable. Since there are so many different kinds to choose from,

I’ll list the manufacturers that make them. Bikes: Honda, KTM, Yamaha, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Aprilia Sport These are bikes generally designed with the racetrack in mind but are street legal. They have more horsepower than you’ll ever need and harness the engineering prowess of the best of the

best. That said, they have an aggressive seating position and aren’t always suited for taller riders. Then again, if we really want something to work, we make it work. Bikes: Ducati Panigale 899/1199, MV Agusta F3, Honda CBR600RR/1000RR, Suzuki GSX-R 750/1000, Yamaha R6/R1, Kawasaki

“They’re not safe. But it would only be a problem in an accident.”

Confessions of a Curber I was getting good at this, so I purchased a used vehicle in the U.S. and imported it. It didn’t have any airbags, so the warning lights were on. But I wasn’t picky. I knew, based on my other tricks, I could solve that before I had it inspected and registered. You just couldn’t be too worried about the truth. I Googled airbags. I saw I had three options. Get certified replacements installed at a repair shop. Buy some and install them myself. Or, override the warning light. I called and found that the first option was out of the question. Way too expensive. But, option two had some promise. There were cheap ones online. Of course, there were some warnings about dangerous fake airbags. Option three, overriding the warning lights, went too far – even for me. You can find how-to videos about anything on the web. So, I ordered cheap ones and had them sent to my U.S. mailbox. I used a buddy’s garage and put them in. Bingo! The warning lights went off and I was on my way. Soon, I had an ad up on several classified websites: Great car for sale. Moving out of the country and need to sell fast! Good condition. Recently inspected. Call cell. I’m flexible on price!! I couldn’t believe how many calls I had. I found my buyer not long after. A nice man about my age; divorced with three kids. That’s all I know about him – I don’t like getting too personal. I was actually honest about the vehicle this time. I told him that the car had been in an

accident and was from the U.S. I asked if he wanted a vehicle history report*, but he declined. He appreciated my honesty, as he’d gone through a few bad deals. With the transaction done, we parted ways. Then I got a call from my buddy. Being a curious person, he’d read the boxes the airbags came in that I’d left at his shop. “You installed counterfeit airbags,” he said. “So? They look identical to the original airbags,” I said. “I’ve seen videos of bogus airbags catching fire and with metal bits exploding when they deploy. They’re not safe,” he scolded. I’ll take my chances, I thought. It would only be a problem in an accident. The next day, my buddy left a message. He ended our friendship. Whoa, chill out. A guy’s got a right to make a few bucks.

Naked No, I’m not suggesting riding in your birthday suit! Naked bikes tend to have a more upright seating and handlebar position and are devoid of fancy bodywork

covering the engine and mechanical components. You still get quite a bit of sportiness out of these, but without the aggressive seating and the stress on your wrists.

“We are anticipating a favourable response to the first Knights of Columbus major event,” Bourbeau said. “We will be hosting many events in the upcoming year some in collaboration with St. Andrews High School.” Only 200 tickets ($20 each) are available. ENERGY EFFICIENCY AT HOME Natural Resources Canada provides more information on the following resources at nrcan.gc.ca/energy/ efficiency/housing. EnerGuide ratings – An EnerGuide rating shows a standard measure of your home’s energy performance. It shows you (and future buyers) exactly how energy efficient your home is. R-2000 homes – Bestin-class energy-efficient homes, R-2000-certified homes include high levels of insulation, clean air features and measures to help protect the environment, built to the R-2000 Standard developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). ENERGY STAR homes – An ENERGY STAR® qualified new home is on average 20 percent more energy efficient than a home built to code, a practical choice for homeowners looking for a new home that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. DID YOU KNOW? The Woodland Creek community in Sooke is powered by geothermal heating and cooling.

Is your dream home a green home?

Trendy and sensible, energy efficiency has never been more valuable

Mark and Rob Bernhardt built Vancouver Island’s first “passive house,” an ultraefficient home that seals in heat and uses sophisticated ventilation to keep the home at a comfortable temperature, while using almost no power. The team has applied to build a sixunit passive condo unit in Victoria. Here Mark holds a prop that shows the triplepaned windows in the home.

Natalie North News staff

Mark Bernhardt had high expectations of his new home. He expected Vancouver Island’s first “passive house,” a home he built with his father Rob Bernhardt at Bernhardt Contracting to be 60 to 90 per cent more efficient than standard house construction to perform well. He wasn’t expecting the level of comfort he experienced upon moving in last May. And though he knew his energy bill would be low, he wasn’t expecting it to come in at about $200 for an entire year. When the air-tight, 3,800-squarefoot Saanich home with six residents can require such little use of its hot water radiator, it means even body heat is a vital source warmth. That 60 watts per person makes a difference, Bernhardt says. “My two kids probably run a little hotter than everybody else,” he adds with a laugh. As gratifying as all the energy efficiency savings have been, it’s the environment inside the home that has the builder most enthused. “There’s no cold spots, no drafts; the noise from outside has been really reduced. A house like this on a busy street would be really quite amazing to live in. You just wouldn’t hear the traffic. With the fresh air, we know that allergy symptoms are reduced.” This spring the Bernhardts applied to the City of Victoria to build a six-condo passive home unit on Queen Street. The North Park Passive House, designed by Hughes Condon Marler Architects, has the same estimated construction costs

Edward Hill/News staff

as a standardly-built project of the same size. Whether the units are rented or sold, Berhardt says they’ll come with a reasonable price tag. “It will have all the comfort features of a passive house, but with the style of housing that we think is more valuable to the city right now. It doesn’t need to have the bling-y things that you see in some of the penthouses in some of the new condos around.” Ultra energy-efficient homes are a trend for those educated enough to know what’s happening in other countries, where energy is more expensive and less green, says Peter Johannknecht, principal architect with Cascadia Architects. Johannknecht specializes in energy efficient design and worked on the Berhardts’ home in Saanich with Cascadia co-founder Greg Damant. “As a trend, Victoria and B.C. in general have a very strong community of green builders and designers

The Other Guys

Call Now! 250.744.3301 dicastrilidstone@shaw.ca • www.dicastrilidstone.com

and architects sharing and making these homes ready for the next 50 to 100 years,” Johannknecht says. Currently, experiences are shared within this community via channels such as the Canadian Passive House Institute, located in Vancouver, and their social media sites. While most of the interest in passive homes in Canada is here in B.C., the idea is spreading throughout North America. “What’s really missing or lacking is some provincial or federal support to help this trend develop quicker and faster, so that the benefits on the climate and the new homes would be faster,” Johannknecht says. “Europe is way ahead of us with the governments, local and provincial and especially federal governments sets their demands very high and the industry has to follow. And it does. Suddenly the high standard becomes the norm. That’s exactly what needs to hap-

pen here.” While we may be lagging in terms of standards, buyers of all kinds have long since concerned themselves with efficiency costs. “What’s the heating bill like?” is a question Victoria Real Estate Board president Tim Ayres has heard for years. Now, buyers are able to view a home’s EnerGuide rating, if the seller has sought one, on the MLS home listing service. “Buyers have already started to consider energy-efficient homes over older homes. If you’ve don’t the energy-efficient upgrades, you’re going to have a much easier time selling and you’re probably going to sell for a bit more than you would if you hadn’t done it. It’s becoming more and more important going forward,” says Ayres. “Any amount that you do spend extra tends to recoup itself in a short amount of time.” nnorth@saanichnews.com

Saanich boots make show Arnold Lim News staff

The Victoria Harbour Boat Show runs May 1 to 4 and includes a plethora of water-based activities and demonstrations including flyboarding by Saanich-based Island Flyboards. Darwin Schellenberg said the company’s waterpowered jet boots are a must-see. “Using the propulsion through the flyboard, (boots shooting high-powered water), you are tapped into the sensation of surfing in the air or propelling yourself through the water like a dolphin,” he said. The flyboards, attached to a 55-foot hose on a jet ski, propels participants through the air or water. “I think it’s a bucket list activity. Anyone who has any inclination for a little bit of fun should try it,” he said. Schellenberg’s demonstrations run throughout the exhibition. Expect food carts, free draws, guided tours and a kids’ zone. A three-day pass runs $25. Daily rates are $10 and $8 for students and seniors. For more information, visit bcyba.com. alim@vicnews.com
