Inner Harbour plan open for public input Daniel Palmer News staff

Parking lots along Victoria’s Inner Harbour have puzzled visitors for decades, the enviable waterfront land paved and left undeveloped by council after council. But now, the city could finally be taking action with revitalization plans for three key sites: Ship Point, lower Wharf Street and the Belleville terminal (see map). Tom Mitchell, manager and boat captain at B.C. Whale Tours near the lower Wharf Street parking lot, said the space is ideal for a public market. “You’ve got the little market in the summer in Bastion Square, but if you had it down here, you could bring in so many more vendors and farm-

ers,” he said. Turning the space into a park is a bad idea, he said, as it’s removed from the street and would be difficult to police at night. “I’d love to see a ferris wheel,” said Mitchell’s co-worker, Charlotte Blundell. “Food trucks should be brought down here, too.” Steve Jackson has been operating a waterfront patio and small restaurant, Lido Bistro, beside the lower Wharf Street parking lot, for the past five years. He said tourists regularly comment how the area is the “most expensive parking lot in the world” for its land value. “There’s just so much underutilized space there,” Jackson said. “Even if they put in underground parking, you’d still have at least 25 feet to put in buildings before you came up to street level.” PLEASE SEE: Inner Harbour businesses have vision, Page A5

‘Living wage’ increases slightly $18.93, up from $18.73 last year. Childcare and Medical Service Plan payments are the two most significant cost increases this

Velma Mason marks 100th birthday in grand style Daniel Palmer

Saturday May 3

Velma Mason was content to let her 100th birthday slip by last month with no more than a few hugs at dinner, but her friends at Rose Manor weren’t having it. The independent living seniors home, tucked away on Rupert Terrace in Fairfield, is where Mason has spent the past 11 years, discovering an entirely new set of friends along the way. “Practically every friend I’ve ever had since coming to Victoria has died. I’ve outlived them all,” she says, sitting gracefully in a red jacket and white scarf. “But I had so many flowers and 29 birthday cards for my 100th. God help us.” Fellow resident Ruby Attwood helped organize a horse and carriage ride through Beacon Hill Park to mark Mason’s centennial. The gift was suggested by Mason’s good friend, Robert Rampling, who accompanied her for the ride in a top hat and suit on a sunny afternoon Wednesday. “He’s young, he’s only about 85,” said Mason, smiling. Attwood convinced many of Rose Manor’s residents to donate a loonie or toonie – and more – to cover the cost of the horse and carriage ride, which was offered at a discounted rate by Tally Ho Sightseeing’s Larry Friedlander. “Now we’re put on the spot to do something for Nedra Gillespie’s 104th birthday in a few weeks, and Phyllis

Velma Mason and friend Robert Rampling head out of the Rose Manor on a carriage ride, a gift from fellow residents who pooled together to get the pair the ride on Mason’s 100th birthday. Light’s 102nd, then we’re off the hook,” Attwood quipped. “For the 104th, we’re going to get a rosebush and put in a little plaque and name it Nedra’s rosebush.” There’s also 101-year-old Henry Wylie to think about come September, but this week the attention is firmly fixed on Mason. “I’ve never been on a horse and carriage ride. I’ve seen them going around

in the city, and thought, ‘that looks like fun,’” she said. When the carriage finally arrived, two dozen seniors lined the brick driveway to see the couple off on their inaugural voyage through Beacon Hill Park. “It’s just lovely,” said Attwood, as the horse carriage made its way onto the street. “I’m just so pleased it came together.” dpalmer@vicnews.com

Arson probed in Chatham St. fire Dan Palmer News staff

A huge fire in an abandoned downtown Victoria building is being investigated as possible arson. Thick, toxic smoke began billowing into the sky from 639 Chatham St. around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and continued smouldering through the evening. The building was slated for demolition today, said Victoria

The living wage is calculated as the hourly rate needed by two full-time earners with two young children to meet basic expenses like rent, childcare, food and transportation after government taxes, credits, deductions and subsidies are taken into account.

Fire Battalion Chief Dave Bicknell. “Early reports by witnesses indicated that the building may have been used by homeless persons,” Bicknell said in a statement. Fire crews used an on-site excavator to gain access to the building later in the evening, while Victoria police controlled traffic around the area. B.C. Victoria Fire Department’s evacuee assistance volunteers helped evacuate the adjacent Paul’s Motor Inn, while Saanich fire crews assisted in rescuing several people who were stuck in a nearby elevator as a result of the power outage. No one was hurt in the blaze, and damage is considered negligible because of the state of the structure, Bicknell said.

Nominate the Great Teachers in your life

l annua 12th

Don Descoteau News staff

Like many professions, teaching has changed a lot over the years. As Black Press continues its Great Teachers series, a celebration of educators presented with partners Staples and Thrifty Foods, we look at some of the positive changes that have affected how our children learn and look at the world. Diane McNay, president of the Lower Vancouver Island Retired Teachers Association, began her career in 1968 and retired in 2002 at 56. She taught at several schools around Greater Victoria, including the last 20 at Arbutus Junior High in Saanich. Teachers today are, on average, younger, she says, and have learned a system of education that focuses less on such unglamorous topics as grammar and more on exploring the ideas of free thought and critical thinking. “I think what has changed the most has been curriculum development,” McNay says of the switch from an emphasis on memorizing facts and figures. “In social studies, which was my area, that was the best change

that was ever made. It really made you think about what you would be doing and gave you more scope (to teach) more meaningful things that would make a lot of difference to the kids.” Changes to the way topics are approached has paralleled advances in technology and access to information. Tom White retired here in 2005 after 33 years teaching music and, late in his career, Internetbased computer classes. He says he enjoyed helping his students get a handle on the emerging technology. Penny Sakamoto, group publisher for Black Press, notes teachers from past generations were bound by a more strict establishment and formality that wasn’t nearly as open. “And, I think the schools really include input from the community very effectively today,” she says. “The high school job experience program is a very good example of that and the programs where students interact with residents of seniors homes, for example, shows a real understanding of today’s community based learning.” ddescoteau@vicnews.com

Celebration time ■ Black Press, Staples and Thrifty Foods encourage you to nominate a grade school teacher whom you feel is making a difference in the community. From all nominations, one teacher each from the elementary, middle school and secondary levels will be honoured at a gala in June. To nominate your favourite teacher, visit vicnews.com/contests/ and click on Great Teachers. All nominators are entered to win a $50 Thrifty’s gift certificate.

Jackson said he’d love to see the city install green space on the roof of any new building and extend the public realm from Bastion Square outwards towards the Inner Harbour. “Obviously, you’ve got to pay the bills, so they need some sort of retail scenario,” he said. “Parking is still an issue down here, but like any other parkade, why can’t it be covered?” Up in Bastion Square, manager Louise Olsen looks out at the water view from Paradiso Di Stelle, a gelateria and cafe. “We’re completely dependent on tourists, and they’re drawn up here by the view,” she said. “As long as we don’t lose our view, we’re happy.”

The city launches its Harbour Dialogue open house on May 9, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Ship Point. City staff will be on hand to discuss project information and accept ideas for the three sites. Representatives from Tourism Victoria, Greater Victoria Harbour Authority, Downtown Victoria Business Association and the Royal BC Museum will also be available. OUR VIEW

Inner Harbour on the wish list Later this month the City of Victoria will open the doors to residents on the future development of three Inner Harbour properties. Specifically, the city wants your views on opportunities for improving the Inner Harbour at Belleville Terminal, Ship Point and Wharf Street. Public feedback will be used to help develop guiding principles and development concepts for each site which will help guide and evaluate future development, says a city press release. Earlier this week we sent reporter Daniel Palmer down to the Inner Harbour to collect the thoughts of some people on how they envisioned a future harbour. It wasn’t much of a surprise that many of these folks had some wonderful (and crazy?) ideas. So, we expect some colourful ideas and dialogue to come from the city meetings. The city is giving us all an opportunity become very familiar with the project with an open house at Ship Point on May 9 from 3 to 7 p.m. and then an “Ideas Forum” the following day at the Victoria Conference Centre, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Of course, all is for naught, if we don’t take the time to participate. Too often we all get stuck in why-bother mode and decide not to participate in such events. But the Inner Harbour is different. The Inner Harbour defines Victoria. It is what both tourists and residents alike identify as part of the greatness of the city. Victorians should embrace this opportunity, and let all stakeholders know what is important to them. This is a great opportunity to define our community’s future.

Vic West resident and former merchant navy seaman Bill Emberly will join other veterans in marking the Battle of Atlantic this Sunday.

Seamen remember Battle of the Atlantic Daniel Palmer News staff

On the first Sunday in May every year, Bill Emberly stands sombrely beneath the cenotaph on the grounds of the B.C. legislature to remember the lesser known navy of the Second World War. The former merchant seaman has made it his lifelong mission to educate younger generations about the tragedies and heroic acts in the Battle of the Atlantic, a six-year supply mission that helped ensure victory for the Allied forces in Europe. It took three weeks for ship convoys to transport goods and personnel from Canada to Britain under constant threat from German U-boats. “We were called the lifeline of the world. If we didn’t keep that lifeline going, we’d all be speaking German today,” said Emberly, one of about 70 remaining members of Vancouver Island branch, Canadian Merchant Navy veterans. On Sunday, the veterans will once again converge at the corner of Belleville and Government streets to remember their friends and colleagues. “It wasn’t just the merchant fleet in the Battle of the Atlantic, the navy had escorts and the bomber command who flew out from England and from Canada,” Emberly said. In 2000, former veterans affairs minister George Baker made merchant navy veterans eligible to receive benefits and pensions. The federal government formally recognized Sept. 3 as Merchant Navy Veterans Day in 2003. Canadian Navy, naval cadets and a naval band will attend Sunday’s public ceremony, which begins at 10:45 a.m.

The third annual Hike for Hospice is set for Sunday (May 4). Beginning at Fisherman’s Wharf Park, the scenic 3.5-kilometre loop will go from the Inner Harbour to the ocean in support of Victoria Hospice. All funds raised this year will be used to support Hospice’s palliative response team. The PRT provides around the clock shortterm crisis support for people who are dying at home. On any given day, more than 400 patients are registered with Hospice. Last year’s Hike for Hospice raised more than $38,000. This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000. Registration starts Sunday at 9 a.m. and the hike begins at 10 a.m. More information is available online at victoriahospice.org/hike-for-hospice.

A tire also performs best, lasts longer and provides best fuel economy when its internal pressure is set at a level recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, and checked on a regular basis. The tire decal, with optimal front and rear recommended tire pressures, is usually on the driver’s door or door jam. If not, the owner’s manual should give you the information and/or tell you where the tire decal is located. A single under-inflated tire (by about 6 psi /40 kPa) can cause a 3 per cent increase in fuel consumption. Using a grade of fuel with a lower octane rating than recommended by the vehicle manufacturer may cause the engine to ping or knock on hard acceleration or when climbing hills, which is not good for the engine! On the other hand, using a higher-octane fuel than your vehicle’s engine needs is generally a waste of money. That said, the pricier fuel may also contain some additional cleaner additives, which is good. Have a great summer and a safe driving vacation.

tem is a 6 speaker, AM/FM/CD with MP3 playback capability and has a speed sensitive volume control. The AWD model receives a Bose 13 speaker premium system. Safety first: The QX60 includes dual-stage front airbags with seatbelt and occupant sensors, driver and front passenger side impact supplement airbags, roof mounted curtain side impact airbags with a rollover sensor for all row outboard occupant head protection. Infiniti recognizes how important it is to have children secure in their vehicles. They have developed a latch system that securely anchors a compatible child seat. Intelligent brake assist system is a safety feature that continuously monitors and analyzes closing speeds to a vehicle ahead and provides warnings. If a collision is immanent, it will also apply the brakes.

There is also a lane departure warning and prevention system. Power: A 3.5 litre, 24 valve V6 engine with 265 horsepower and 248 ft-lb of torque powers this vehicle. The transmission is an electronically continuously variable (CVT) with manual shift capabilities. Pump frequency: 10.5/7.6 L/100km (city/highway) 10.9/7.8 L/100km (city/highway) AWD Model Warranty support: 48 month/ 100,000 km Roadworthy: Excellent handling to this vehicle, steering was quick and responsive, and body roll was at a minimum. Even though the engine was more than adequate, providing plenty of power, the CVT transmission was continuing to make adjustments and I found at times sudden bursts of power followed by a hard up shift. Definitely not something I expected with this type of luxury. Verdict: I was excited to drive this vehicle but disappointed by the size of the interior space and performance. The safety features of this vehicle are incredible and I think most people would feel very safe driving it. The 2014 Infiniti QX60 is a luxurious sport utility vehicle that puts safety above everything else. Looks: The QX60 is a very attractive vehicle to these eyes; it has distinctive Infiniti looks. The projector-style headlights flow with the body lines and the fog lights look like they belong instead of an afterthought. The side body lines almost give the appearance of waves moving up the vehicle. LED rear brake lights and center high mounted stoplight sit atop the rear power lift-gate. Chrome accents around the windows give it a sense of elegance. In the cab: The cabin seemed large to me at first, but after climbing in and getting comfortable it is really not that big. If you are a . . . how can I put this delicately? – If you are an amply-proportioned person, really spend some time trying out all of the seat positions. Once in the driver’s seat I found the controls well positioned and easy to operate. I liked the navigation screen with 3D mapping, the monitor offers a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and detects moving objects thus providing more help in backing up in a tight parking lot. It features an 8-way power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, 6 way power front passenger’s seat, 60/40 split folding and sliding second row bench seat that allows easy entry/ exit even with a child seat installed and a 50/50 split folding third row seat that reclines. Toyota went one step further with the 1973 Celica Liftback, a virtual three-quarter-scale replica of the Mustang Fastback. Even the upper crust Aston Martin with its V8 Vantage model of the 1970s went to the Mustang well. The 2015 Mustang still sports design cues from the original 1965 Mustang Fastback. Picking the right ride for your spring cruising Alexandra Straub

There are many different ways to get on the open, or dirt, road. I’ll suggest some new makes and models to consider but by no means are these the be-all-end-all of choices. Cruisers Cruisers have mass appeal because of their low seat heights, generally comfortable ergonomics and ability to get you from point A to B in style. Some models have the foot pegs stretched forward, some don’t. They might not be the most nimble bikes around but they certainly do have mass appeal. Better yet, they come in all different sizes, shapes and displacements making it even more accessible to riders. Bikes: Honda CTX700, Yamaha Bolt, Harley-Davidson Superlow 1200T, Suzuki Boulevard C50 Sport Tourer Want a sportier edge while still maintaining comfort while riding for extended periods of time? Consider a sport touring motorcycle. They’re generally not as heavy or as elaborate as a full on touring bike, so you get the best of both worlds. Bikes: BMW K1300S, BMW K1600GT, Yamaha FJR1300, Honda VFR1200 Touring When asked how I’d describe a touring bike I say – not small. These machines are typically heavy, but come equipped with the technology and luxuries that can take you across the country and further. Their fuel tanks are generally much bigger so you can keep going for longer. Furthermore, storage compartments, relatively speaking, are quite generous. Bikes: Harley-Davidson Electra Glide/Ultra Limited, Honda Goldwing, Suzuki Boulevard C90T B.O.S.S. Dirt Playing in the dirt has never been so much fun. Whether

you’re young or young at heart, dirt bikes are a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Dirt bikes are restricted to the dirt, meaning, unless you have a dual sport bike that has a license plate, you can’t ride them in the road. That said, they’re generally quite affordable and are extremely durable. Since there are so many different kinds to choose from,

I’ll list the manufacturers that make them. Bikes: Honda, KTM, Yamaha, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Aprilia Sport These are bikes generally designed with the racetrack in mind but are street legal. They have more horsepower than you’ll ever need and harness the engineering prowess of the best of the

best. That said, they have an aggressive seating position and aren’t always suited for taller riders. Then again, if we really want something to work, we make it work. Bikes: Ducati Panigale 899/1199, MV Agusta F3, Honda CBR600RR/1000RR, Suzuki GSX-R 750/1000, Yamaha R6/R1, Kawasaki

“They’re not safe. But it would only be a problem in an accident.”

Confessions of a Curber I was getting good at this, so I purchased a used vehicle in the U.S. and imported it. It didn’t have any airbags, so the warning lights were on. But I wasn’t picky. I knew, based on my other tricks, I could solve that before I had it inspected and registered. You just couldn’t be too worried about the truth. I Googled airbags. I saw I had three options. Get certified replacements installed at a repair shop. Buy some and install them myself. Or, override the warning light. I called and found that the first option was out of the question. Way too expensive. But, option two had some promise. There were cheap ones online. Of course, there were some warnings about dangerous fake airbags. Option three, overriding the warning lights, went too far – even for me. You can find how-to videos about anything on the web. So, I ordered cheap ones and had them sent to my U.S. mailbox. I used a buddy’s garage and put them in. Bingo! The warning lights went off and I was on my way. Soon, I had an ad up on several classified websites: Great car for sale. Moving out of the country and need to sell fast! Good condition. Recently inspected. Call cell. I’m flexible on price!! I couldn’t believe how many calls I had. I found my buyer not long after. A nice man about my age; divorced with three kids. That’s all I know about him – I don’t like getting too personal. I was actually honest about the vehicle this time. I told him that the car had been in an

accident and was from the U.S. I asked if he wanted a vehicle history report*, but he declined. He appreciated my honesty, as he’d gone through a few bad deals. With the transaction done, we parted ways. Then I got a call from my buddy. Being a curious person, he’d read the boxes the airbags came in that I’d left at his shop. “You installed counterfeit airbags,” he said. “So? They look identical to the original airbags,” I said. “I’ve seen videos of bogus airbags catching fire and with metal bits exploding when they deploy. They’re not safe,” he scolded. I’ll take my chances, I thought. It would only be a problem in an accident. The next day, my buddy left a message. He ended our friendship. Whoa, chill out. A guy’s got a right to make a few bucks.

Naked No, I’m not suggesting riding in your birthday suit! Naked bikes tend to have a more upright seating and handlebar position and are devoid of fancy bodywork

covering the engine and mechanical components. You still get quite a bit of sportiness out of these, but without the aggressive seating and the stress on your wrists.

More than 50 teenage girl soccer players earned coaching certificates through the She Kicks program. The program is a partnership between Lower Island Soccer Association and the University of Victoria Women’s Vikes soccer team that is geared to the development of female soccer coaches. This past winter, the University hosted two female only coaching courses for players in grades 10 through 12 and certified 31 coaches through the Active Start program and a further 23 coaches through the fundamentals stage. “Our goal is to develop a world leading grassroots coaching development program here in the LISA district and the ‘She Kicks’ program is a key piece of that programming,” said LISA head coach Andrew Latham. editor@vicnews.com

ENERGY EFFICIENCY AT HOME Natural Resources Canada provides more information on the following resources at nrcan.gc.ca/energy/ efficiency/housing. EnerGuide ratings – An EnerGuide rating shows a standard measure of your home’s energy performance. It shows you (and future buyers) exactly how energy efficient your home is. R-2000 homes – Bestin-class energy-efficient homes, R-2000-certified homes include high levels of insulation, clean air features and measures to help protect the environment, built to the R-2000 Standard developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan). ENERGY STAR homes – An ENERGY STAR® qualified new home is on average 20 percent more energy efficient than a home built to code, a practical choice for homeowners looking for a new home that is energy efficient and environmentally friendly. DID YOU KNOW? The Woodland Creek community in Sooke is powered by geothermal heating and cooling.

Is your dream home a green home? Trendy and sensible, energy efficiency has never been more valuable

Mark and Rob Bernhardt built Vancouver Island’s first “passive house,” an ultraefficient home that seals in heat and uses sophisticated ventilation to keep the home at a comfortable temperature, while using almost no power. The team has applied to build a sixunit passive condo unit in Victoria. Here Mark holds a prop that shows the triplepaned windows in the home.

Natalie North News staff

Mark Bernhardt had high expectations of his new home. He expected Vancouver Island’s first “passive house,” a home he built with his father Rob Bernhardt at Bernhardt Contracting to be 60 to 90 per cent more efficient than standard house construction to perform well. He wasn’t expecting the level of comfort he experienced upon moving in last May. And though he knew his energy bill would be low, he wasn’t expecting it to come in at about $200 for an entire year. When the air-tight, 3,800-squarefoot Saanich home with six residents can require such little use of its hot water radiator, it means even body heat is a vital source warmth. That 60 watts per person makes a difference, Bernhardt says. “My two kids probably run a little hotter than everybody else,” he adds with a laugh. As gratifying as all the energy efficiency savings have been, it’s the environment inside the home that has the builder most enthused. “There’s no cold spots, no drafts; the noise from outside has been really reduced. A house like this on a busy street would be really quite amazing to live in. You just wouldn’t hear the traffic. With the fresh air, we know that allergy symptoms are reduced.” This spring the Bernhardts applied to the City of Victoria to build a six-condo passive home unit on Queen Street. The North Park Passive House, designed by Hughes Condon Marler Architects, has the same estimated construction costs

Edward Hill/News staff

as a standardly-built project of the same size. Whether the units are rented or sold, Berhardt says they’ll come with a reasonable price tag. “It will have all the comfort features of a passive house, but with the style of housing that we think is more valuable to the city right now. It doesn’t need to have the bling-y things that you see in some of the penthouses in some of the new condos around.” Ultra energy-efficient homes are a trend for those educated enough to know what’s happening in other countries, where energy is more expensive and less green, says Peter Johannknecht, principal architect with Cascadia Architects. Johannknecht specializes in energy efficient design and worked on the Berhardts’ home in Saanich with Cascadia co-founder Greg Damant. “As a trend, Victoria and B.C. in general have a very strong community of green builders and designers

Call Now! 250.744.3301 dicastrilidstone@shaw.ca • www.dicastrilidstone.com

and architects sharing and making these homes ready for the next 50 to 100 years,” Johannknecht says. Currently, experiences are shared within this community via channels such as the Canadian Passive House Institute, located in Vancouver, and their social media sites. While most of the interest in passive homes in Canada is here in B.C., the idea is spreading throughout North America. “What’s really missing or lacking is some provincial or federal support to help this trend develop quicker and faster, so that the benefits on the climate and the new homes would be faster,” Johannknecht says. “Europe is way ahead of us with the governments, local and provincial and especially federal governments sets their demands very high and the industry has to follow. And it does. Suddenly the high standard becomes the norm. That’s exactly what needs to hap-

pen here.” While we may be lagging in terms of standards, buyers of all kinds have long since concerned themselves with efficiency costs. “What’s the heating bill like?” is a question Victoria Real Estate Board president Tim Ayres has heard for years. Now, buyers are able to view a home’s EnerGuide rating, if the seller has sought one, on the MLS home listing service. “Buyers have already started to consider energy-efficient homes over older homes. If you’ve don’t the energy-efficient upgrades, you’re going to have a much easier time selling and you’re probably going to sell for a bit more than you would if you hadn’t done it. It’s becoming more and more important going forward,” says Ayres. “Any amount that you do spend extra tends to recoup itself in a short amount of time.” nnorth@saanichnews.com

Selecting the right two-wheel ride for you Life of two wheels is incredible. Just ask anyone who rides. Part of that appeal is finding a riding style that fits

your personal preference. There are many different ways to get you on the open, or dirt, road to enjoy the best of the great

outdoors. I’ll suggest some new makes and models to consider in each category, but by no means are these the be-all-end-all of choices.

Cruisers Cruisers have mass appeal because of their low seat heights, generally comfortable ergonomics and ability

to get you from point A to B in style. Some models have the foot pegs stretched forward, some don’t. They might not be the most

nimble bikes around but they certainly do have mass appeal. Trials Those looking into trying riding without the high speeds might fall in love with trials riding. But get ready for a workout. If you look, there’s no seat. That’s because you’re meant to stand. Trials is a slow speed type of thrill where you manage obstacles and find ways to do things that even you didn’t think were possible. Think: riding up huge logs, up steep hills and over some interesting terrain. Either way, it’s a lot of fun and both physically and mentally challenging. Bikes: Montesa Cota 4RT, Beta 200, Gas Gas TXT Pro Dirt Playing in the dirt has never been so much fun. No, really, it’s true. Whether you’re young or young at heart, dirt bikes are a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Dirt bikes are restricted to the dirt, meaning, unless you have a dual sport bike that has a license plate, you can’t ride them in the road. That said, they’re generally quite affordable and are extremely durable. Since there are so many different kinds to choose from, I’ll list the manufacturers that make them.

‘‘

Bikes: Honda, KTM, Yamaha, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Aprilia Adventure Take the road less traveled, but take the road when you want. Adventure bikes have an uncanny ability to get you through some incredible terrain. Bikes: BMW F700GS/ F800GS/R1200GS, Suzuki V-Strom, KTM 1190 Adventure Sport If you’re looking for the ultimate performance machine, a sport bike is the way to go. These are bikes generally designed with the racetrack in mind but are street legal. They have more horsepower than you’ll ever need and harness the engineering prowess of the best of the best. That said, they have an aggressive seating position and aren’t always suited for taller riders. Then again, if we really want something to work, we make it work. Bikes: Ducati Panigale 899/1199, MV Agusta F3, Honda CBR600RR/1000RR, Suzuki GSX-R 750/1000, Yamaha R6/R1, Kawasaki Ninja Naked No, I’m not suggesting riding in your birthday suit! Naked bikes tend to have a more upright seating and handlebar position and are devoid of fancy bodywork covering the engine and mechanical components. You still get quite a bit of sportiness out of these, but without the aggressive seating and the stress on your wrists. Some Naked bikes are: Triumph Street Triple, Triumph Speed Triple, Ducati Streetfighter 848, Honda NC700X, Yamaha FZ-09. Of course, there are café racers, customs bikes and more. I could go on. alexandra.straub @drivewaybc.ca

Five top classic influential designs

1965 Ford Mustang GT Fastback. 1967 Cadillac Eldorado: The ’67 Eldorado is one of the great overlooked postwar American classics. A Bill Mitchell design triumph, it’s an ageless design that wouldn’t look out of place in a showroom today, particularly since Cadillac continues to revisit the ’67 Eldo rear end, one of the greatest three-quarterviews of all time.

1954 Jeep CJ-5: The original Jeep CJ may well be the most knocked-off vehicle of all time, inspiring the likes of the Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, Suzuki Samurai, etc., not to mention, of course, the current Jeep Wrangler. Jaguar E-Type: The E-Type was one of the prime influences for the above-mentioned Toyota as well as

Certain cars just won’t recede into the automotive fossil record. Designers – particularly those from their company of origin – keep going back to the well. And why not? It’s almost impossible to top the cars on this list: 1967 Toyota 2000 GT: The gorgeous Toyota 2000 GT sports car was a giant commercial flop when it was introduced. The status of Japanese cars in the U.S. market at the time was roughly the equivalent of Korean cars about 15 years ago, and a Japanese car that cost more than a Jaguar E-Type, a Corvette or a Porsche 911 found few takers. Just over 300 were built and the model’s failure continues to haunt Toyota. The roofline and greenhouse of the 1967 2000GT show up almost unaltered in the latest Toyota sports car concept, the FT-1. Incidentally, Toyota has probably had the last laugh here, as the 2000 GT is now the only Japanese collectible car worth $1 million.

the famous Datsun 240Z. Its extreme long hood, short rear deck design and covered headlight styling cues also continue to show up in Jaguar’s own products like the XK8 and the new F-Type. After all, it was by rival Enzo Ferrari’s own admission the most beautiful car in the world. 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback: Long before Ford went retro with the 2005 Mustang, they knocked off their own design for the original pony car with the European Ford Capri. Luxury sport ute with emphasis on safety The 2014 Infiniti QX60 is a luxurious sport utility vehicle that puts safety above everything else. Looks: The QX60 is a very attractive vehicle to these eyes; it has distinctive Infiniti looks. The projector style headlights flow with the body lines and the fog lights look like they belong instead of an afterthought. The side body lines almost give the appearance of waves moving up the vehicle. LED rear brake lights and centre high-mounted stoplight sit atop the rear power lift-gate. Chrome accents around the windows give it a sense of elegance. In the cab: The cabin seemed large to me at first, but after climbing in and getting comfortable it is really not that big. If you are a . . . now how can I put this delicately? – If you are an amply proportioned person really spend some time trying out all of the seat positions. Once in the driver’s seat I found the controls well positioned and easy to operate. I liked the navigation screen with 3D mapping, the monitor offers a bird’s eye view of the vehicle and detects moving objects thus providing more help in backing up in a tight parking lot.

‘‘

The safety features of this vehicle are incredible and I think most people would feel very safe driving it.

’’

Ian Harwood

It features an eight-way power driver’s seat with adjustable lumbar support, six-way power front passenger’s seat, 60/40 split folding and sliding second row bench seat that allows easy entry/exit even with a child seat installed, 50/50 split folding third row seat that reclines. The audio system is a six speaker, AM/FM/ CD with MP3 playback capability and has a speed sensitive volume control. The AWD model receives a Bose 13-speaker premium system. Safety first: The QX60 includes dual stage front airbags with seatbelt and occupant sensors, driver and front passenger side impact sup-

plement airbags, roof mounted curtain side impact airbags with rollover sensor for all row outboard occupant head protection. Infiniti recognizes how important it is to have children secure in their vehicles. They have developed a latch system that securely anchors a compatible child seat. Intelligent brake assist system is a safety feature that continuously monitors and analyzes closing speeds to a vehicle ahead and provides warnings. If a collision

AWD Model Warranty support: 48 month/ 100,000 km Roadworthy: Excellent handling to this vehicle, steering was quick and responsive, and body roll was at a minimum. Even though the engine was more than adequate providing power, the transmission continued to make adjustments, at times sudden bursts of power followed by a hard up shift. Definitely not something I

is immanent, it will also apply the brakes. There is also a lane departure warning and prevention system. Power: A 3.5 litre, 24 valve V6 engine with 265 horsepower and 248 ft-lb of torque power this vehicle. The transmission is an electronically continuously variable (CVT) with manual shift capabilities. Pump frequency: 10.5/7.6 L/100km (city/highway) 10.9/7.8 L/100km (city/highway)

expected with this type of luxury. Verdict: I was excited to drive this vehicle but disappointed by the size of the interior space and performance. The safety features of this vehicle are incredible and I think most people would feel very safe driving it. Kids were asked to use smiley faces to compare and rate the ease of fastening the safety belt based on a five-point scale. Keith Morgan

’’

“They’re not safe. But it would only be a problem in an accident.”

Julia Livedoti, eight, fastens her seat belt during Human Factors testing in the Buick Enclave during the General Motors Annual Kids Day. Jeffrey Sauger/Buick

Take your child to work and experiment on them General Motors puts a new spin on ‘Take your child to work day’. You can’t put them to work while they learn what mom and dad do, but they can be useful as experiment subjects. The so-called Human Factors group conducts about 100 studies globally into how people interact with their vehicles. Having children around means group members can test such things as seat belts. No, they don’t crash test the cars but they do examine how easy it is for children to buckle up. “Working with children on Take Your Child to Work Day is an excellent way for us to expand our pool of feedback,” said Don Shreves, GM Human Factors engineering group manager. “Our group and research is very data-driven. Designing every element to a vehicle comes down to millimetres. While a door handle placement or seat switch might feel right to the designing engineer, we come in with data points from real consumer feedback, including kids, to help determine the best location.” This year, the usability team

conducted a study looking at the Buick Enclave’s thirdrow safety belt buckles. The kids were asked to use smiley faces to compare and rate the ease of fastening the safety belt based on a five-point scale. A previous study dealt with a sickly problem that many of us have faced on trips with young offspring. In the early days of DVD players in cars, many kids reached for the barf bag during a long journey. Shreves’ group figured out how to place the screen outside of what they charmingly refer to as “the puke zone.” “We know through other scientific research that even if our eyes are focused on a fixed point – if we can see the outside passing by in the window – our brain is telling us that we are moving,” Shreves said. “But if our eyes are at a downward angle and do not see the view outside the vehicle, our bodies become sensitive to motion and increase the chance of sickness.” The team’s goal was to keep passenger’s eyes up and in a given spot. Determining that precise location required setting

up a DVD screen on a track that could slide along the roof of an Enclave. Researchers recorded the responses of more than 75 kids who were asked when the screen distance was too close and too far away.

From there, the data was graphed and compiled to determine the best location. The results were turned over to the vehicle engineering team to integrate into the Enclave’s design. keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca

BUY ONE GET ONE FREE Wiper Blades

These reports can’t tell you everything a physical inspection will, but they require the seller to Prove it! and not just say it.

A real big stretch for BMW lovers A recent jaunt to Beijing was a major revelation, from the sheer size of the population to the massive car market and the types of cars people there like to buy. In the luxury segment, elongated versions of existing sedan are very popular. There “long” wheelbase cars instantly show that the owner has attained a certain level of status and a big part of that is being chauffeur-driven. In Canada, we have long wheelbase sedans but typically, they are top models like a BMW 7 Series or S-Class Mercedes. In China, even base models like the BMW 3 Series or Audi A4 have stretched versions. I raise this because the all-new BMW 335GT is the long wheelbase 3 Series, developed for China, modified for a niche market here. Looks Adding 10 centimetres of additional legroom to the back seat of the 335GT opens up a different experience for rear passengers. The GT offers slightly higher seating position and roofline with a hatchback design that makes for a dramatic and functional car. BMW does have a 3 Series station wagon but it looks like a wagon, this design mimics a sedan silhouette with only a

slight hint of the cars true practicality. There is a wing that emerges out of the hatch at highway speeds to produce more down force, similar to the one found in Porsche’s Panamera. The GT is sold as a 328GT, with a $48,990 starting price. It has a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and 18-inch wheels. The $56,990 335GT has a larger turbocharged 6-cylinder engine and 19inch wheels. (The wheels seen here are winter wheels and tires) Inside The 3 Series sedan is already fitted with top-notch materials and a functional dash. This is carried over to the GT model, so the front seats remain unaltered. It is the back of the car that is dramatically different. With added legroom and a higher roofline the GT feels open, especially when fitted with the panoramic roof. My kids loved the extra space but noticed the doors sit a bit higher compared to a regular mid-size SUV. The hatch has no rear wiper so expect rear visibility to be blurry on rainy or snowy days. (You do get spoiled with a rear wiper on an SUV). The hatch is electronically operated and provides a long and wide cargo area, plus the rear seats fold in a snap. The rear windows and cargo do not have

darkened, privacy class like an SUV, which is something I would prefer. Drive The 3 Series sedan has been considered the benchmark in the compact luxury market for decades and a lot of the same goodness is here in the GT. With a longer wheelbase and a slightly higher centre of gravity it doesn’t handle as nimbly as the sedan but it is much better than the taller X3 SUV. The power from either 241 hp turbocharged 4-cylinder or the 300 hp turbocharged 6-cylinder engines goes to all four wheels and is shifted through a very slick 8-speed auto box. There are settings for vehicle dynamics and suspension from “Eco” to “Sport Plus” that can

take this car from relaxed to athletic at the push of a button. I really enjoyed driving in sport mode and getting the full effect of the 335GT, as the in-line turbo 6-cylinder is still one of the best power plants on the road. For buyers looking to save on fuel and when purchasing, the 328GT is still a potent machine. Verdict The GT falls into a very nice spot in the 3 Series family, and I include the X3 in that group. The sedan is a great car but not as practical as the X3. Yes the X3 has traditional SUV appeal but looses some of the sedans nimbleness. This is where the GT plays. It has a bigger cargo area than the X3, more rear legroom but it also has more a sedan stance on the road. The price is more expensive than the X3 so this is a premium offering in the BMW family. If I were in the market for a BMW the 335GT or less expensive 328GT would be in the running. With kids I like having and SUV but still want the fun and stability that a sedan offers. This GT might just be the right balance for some. So thank you, China, for helping to bring a unique new class of car to our market. zack.spencer @drivewaybc.ca
