Water damage causes problems with community centre’s auditorium floor By Treena Mielke Rimbey town council is weighing the best options to deal with the severely water damaged hardwood floor in the main auditorium of the Peter Lougheed Community Centre caused by a leaking water filled base of a basketball net. At its meeting, April 28, council discussed the issue and looked at possible options to fixing the problem. Removing sections of the floor in the four areas which are suffering from water damage, and replacing and resealing the
hardwood in those sections would cost approximately $10,000. While this is the cheapest option, the repaired areas will be noticeable. Another option is to remove sections of the floor in the four damaged locations and replace with new hardwood, then refinish the whole floor including new floor markings for the courts. This option would reduce the visibility of section repairs, but would double the cost. Mayor Rick Pankiw said the first step in dealing with the damage is to keep fans

turned on in the auditorium constantly for approximately two weeks in the hopes that the floor may dry out. “Right now the floor is lifting. We are hoping the fans will dry it out enough so the floor will settle and minimize the damage.” Pankiw said there is a possibility the new hardwood will not mesh with the hardwood now in place, which will mean the entire floor will have to be replaced. This unknown factor needs to be taken into consideration if council decides to go with the $20,000 option, as it may prove to be only a short term solution, even though
it would be more aesthetically pleasing, he said. Council, in 2011, voted two to three to purchase the $80,041.95 hardwood floor for the main auditorium. MLA Joe Anglin, a former councillor, made the motion to purchase as the hardwood. Former Coun. Gayle Rondeel and former mayor Sheldon Ibbotson voted against the motion. The leakage could have been avoided if the base of the basketball net was filled with sand instead of water, said Pankiw.

Police chase results in arrest of truck thief Rimbey RCMP detachment responded to 40 calls for service this week. Highlights of the week include vandalism, theft, fraud, stolen vehicles and other serious matters. Citizen drawn into scam A citizen responding to a newspaper advertisement was drawn into an international scam that cost her a great deal of hard earned money. Fraudsters prey upon unsuspecting victims by portraying themselves as potential buyers, employers, etc and send the victim money by way of a check, usually in the amount of several thousand dollars. They request that the victim cash the check and keep a few hundred dollars for themselves then wire them the remaining amount back to them. Of course, the check eventually bounces after the victim has already wired real money to the criminal who resides in Africa or elsewhere. These scams are virtually untraceable and the victim is usually out all their money. If you would like to see the list of the most recent scams, please visit the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at www.phonebusters.com. Remember, if a deal seems too good to be true... it likely is a scam. Ask for references, check with the Better Business Bureau, etc. Protect yourself
and don’t be the next victim. Police chase On Wednesday, April 30th, at approximately 7 p.m., officers responded to a call of a possible impaired driver near the 5th Meridian Road east of Rimbey. Officers quickly attended the scene and located the pickup truck near Highway 53 where it failed to stop for the police. A police chase ensued and the driver was eventually arrested when he attempted to drive the truck, which was stolen, through a field where it bogged down. The accused had just been released from jail. Obviously, his parole officer failed to tell him that we had a hard winter out here while he was basking behind bars and the fields are still saturated from all the snow. The thief has been remanded in custody and will now spend the summer in the Queen’s Motel as well. Broken window sets off alarm Police arrested a local gentleman who broke a window setting off the burglar alarm at a business on Main Street. The young man had been drinking and was running down the street with his entourage and somehow did a face plant against the window causing it to break and set off the alarm.

The chap then headed straight to the bar to continue a night of celebration rather than wait to speak to police or the owner when they arrived a short time later responding to the alarm. The accused has been charged with mischief and will appear in Rimbey court to speak to the charge. Charges laid Officers recently located a stolen car in town. Mounties from Rimbey began a thorough investigation and eventually linked this crime to other vehicle thefts that have occurred in Sylvan Lake and other ju-

OPINION
Remembering Grandma As I write this, I remember that today is my motherin-law’s birthday. Weird, I would remember that, as she left us many years ago. Still, when I see pussywillows softening roadside ditches and the earth going through the labor pains of spring, I think of her. My mother-in-law was a no nonsense type of woman who didn’t have a lot of time for small talk probably because she was so busy in the kitchen; always moving, always making things; canning, cleaning, cooking. They say communication is only ten percent verbal anyway, so it didn’t really matter to me that she didn’t talk much. I liked her a lot! I was only 18-yearsold when I first met her. I was not much older when I presented her with her first grandchild; a healthy 8 lb. 1 ounce baby boy. To say the least, she was surprised. No doubt, she wasn’t expecting such a gift from me. I was, after all, the kid she had introduced to her lady friends as her son’s little friend only months before. I handed her the child when he was about two weeks old, hoping she would notice how wonderful he was and love him at once. She did. She took him in her capable hands, paused momentarily from hanging the washing on the line, exam-

ined him thoroughly and before long her knitting needles began clicking and her sewing machine began whirring and, as it turned out, the child, as were his sisters, was dressed by grandma pretty much until they started college. We lost grandma several years ago physically, but we really lost her many years before that when she left this world in her mind, only returning in brief, lucid moments to grace us with a smile or a gentle squeeze from tired, bony fingers, the parchment skin stretched so tightly across them, it seemed like it would tear at the slightest pressure. I loved grandma for a lot of things, but mostly because she loved me back, I think, but even more importantly than that, she loved my children. And, also, she gave me the piano. The piano has been with us for many years, traveling unceremoniously to all our
houses, being hauled in and out by many strong men, who got to show how very strong they were, indeed, by hauling such a piano. It has sat in our last home, in its place of honour in the living room, for almost 20 years. And, if the truth were known, there has been months, when it has gathered dust and its keys have been still and quiet. It’s different now.
In one of my ‘self improvement’ ahaa moments, I decided I needed to expand my horizons. I had many options. Learn to tweet, retake math 30, oops, I never did take math 30, join a knitting club, (never learned that either), or start piano lessons again. I decided to go with the piano. It is slow; painfully slow, but I so do love it. Right now I am learning
the Sound of Music, which, surprisingly is even beginning to sound like said song. I know this because the other day I asked my husband what his favorite song was that I could play and he said the one about the hills! There you go! I notice he turns his hearing aids down when I play, but I refuse to take that as an insult. Besides, I have discovered the ‘loud’ pedal!

Canada has the richest middle class working citizens On April 22nd the New York Times released a study that declared Canada’s middle class was better off than the middle class in the United States. Instantly a wrench was thrown into the plan of Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party’s belief that our middle class in Canada is struggling. The New York Times reported that per capita income in Canada in 2010 was $18,700 or about $75,000 for a family of four after taxes which is the highest in the world. The study was based on analyzing 35 years’ worth of income data and comparing Canada with Norway, Netherlands, Britain, Germany, Sweden, France, Ireland, Spain and
the U.S. The study found that Canada’s median income grew by 19.7% from 20002010 compared to 0.3% growth in the U.S. Mr. Trudeau and the Liberal Party have a hard time defining who fits in their definition of middle class and while they’re struggling to define who they think the middle class is, our Government will continue to fight for hard working Canadians by developing and implementing tax cuts and programs that put more money back in their pockets. In February Statistics Canada released a study showing the net worth of Canadian families rose 44.5% since 2005 and nearly
MP Blaine Calkins 80% since 1999. The facts are not lining up to support the position Mr. Trudeau and his party is trying to sell to Canadians. Andrew Coyne recently wrote in an article “the more the evidence piles up the more it discredits the thesis,
popular in certain quarters of a struggling middle class”. The study confirms what the Liberal Leader didn’t want to hear, in Canada the middle class has never been as well off. All of this is very problematic for the Leader of the Liberal Party, as he tries to convince himself and his party that our middle class is struggling. The data however paints a very different picture. Mr. Trudeau said he wanted to put forward evidence based policy, which seems to be the case only when the data supports his theories. The global economy is still fragile and recovering, Canada is outpacing our partners and we are con-
tinuing to focus on our economic growth and long term prosperity. While Justin Trudeau is trying to figure out who the middle class is or just how the budget will magically balance itself, our Government will continue to put policies in place that will benefit Canadian families. san provincial ministries. However, I see no value to the community when local politicians engage in the same unhelpful rhetoric to raise their public profiles. I’ve been criticized for many things in my life, but this is the first time I have been criticized for passing along good news. Before the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Ken Hughes, resigned from cabinet he drafted a letter to the Rimoka Board outlining the funding details for a new lodge in Rimbey. Rimbey’s Mayor Rick Pankiw and Ponoka County’s Reeve, Paul McLauchlin, are in receipt of this letter, and both claim the information is confidential and cannot be released to the public. Sometime soon after, on the evening of April 8th, the newly appointed interim Minister of Municipal Affairs, Greg Weadick, confirmed to me that Rimbey would be receiving roughly $13.3 million for a new lodge. I asked Weadick for permission to inform the local press, and he happily obliged me. I didn’t necessarily need his permission, but as a matter of common courtesy it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. After all Hughes had resigned only hours earlier,
and Weadick hadn’t even had time to warm his seat. Presumably Mr. Weadick acted without consulting his bureaucrats, and now the ministerial bureaucrats, with the aid of ill-informed local politicians, are alleging I leaked information that should not have been released by the minister. I can only assume the bureaucratic tail did a very poor job of wagging the ministerial dog, and now they are looking for someone to blame. I’m happy to take the blame for leaking information, but in order to be guilty of the offense, even the bureaucrats have to admit someone would have had to give me the information in the first place. By definition opposition MLAs don’t leak government information. We have a parliamentary right to ask the minister questions, and when we are provided answers, we get to release the information. Secondly, we have no obligation to the minister or ministry to withhold information from the public. It’s a responsibility we opposition MLAs exercise freely, in spite of the political partisanship so often demonstrated by this 40-year-old government concerning the allocation of taxpayer dollars. The practice of politicizing the allocation of taxpayer dollars is so deeply entrenched in Alberta’s political ethos that naive local politicians actually think they have a duty to assist the provincial govWould like to send out a huge thanks to the following ernment in this endeavor. businesses and individuals for donating to our fundraiser. LETTERS
The Rimbey Review, May 6, 2014 9
MLA questions Rimoka board’s decision to keep information confidential Continued from Page 6 McLauchlin’s assertion that I haven’t discussed the project with the Rimoka Board in the last two years is false. On the night of the funding disclosure I communicated with Mayor Pankiw several times over the course of the evening. Mr. McLauchlin knows this to be true, because Pankiw informed him of my communica-
tions. After the minister gave me permission to inform the press, the first person I called was the Rimoka CAO, Denis Beesley. I told Mr. Beesley exactly what the former Minister of Seniors told me: “As soon as the Rimoka Board receives notice of the impending funding, have the board apply immediately for assisted living funding. There is another $5 million in
additional funding available for assisted living, and all the Rimoka Board needs to do is apply.” As of the date of the writing of this letter the Rimoka Board has not applied for the assisted living funding. The Rimoka Board has operated incompetently and unprofessionally for far too long now, and Pankiw and McLauchlin have some explaining to do. How did
the application for a new lodge get reduced from 80 to 40 units without the Rimbey and Ponoka town councils knowing? How did it come to be that SJC signed a letter of intent to sell land to the county for a new lodge, before the county broke off negotiations with the Johnsons? This type of bad faith dealing is unbecoming of elected officials and the public
deserves better. In closing, Mayor Pankiw and Mr. McLauchlin need to quit bellyaching about who is going to get credit for announcing the new lodge and get busy doing their jobs. Joe Anglin MLA Rimbey - Rocky Mountain House - Rimbey

By Treena Mielke June Norvila and her husband Paul are more than a little confused over Alberta Health Care’s announcement they can return to Red Deer Hospital for dialysis treatments. The couple wonders what is going on after they received notification late last month Paul could return to the hospital and have his old chair back for treatments. Earlier, the couple had been told there was no room at the hospital and they would have to travel to Wetaskiwin for dialysis treatments. “Paul was sitting in a chair in Wetaskiwin when we got the call that we would be going back. I don’t understand how things can change in two days,” Norvila said. Paul Norvila was one of three dialysis patients who were told they would have to travel to other units, either in Wetaskiwin or Rocky Mountain House, to receive treatment. An announcement that no one who received dialysis at the Red Deer Hospital would have to travel for treatment came on the heels of a 75-year-old Sylvan Lake woman’s refusal to drive to Rocky Mountain House for treatment. “It does make you wonder why it couldn’t have happened before,” said

Norvila. The hour and a half drive to Wetaskiwin was taxing for both she and her husband and Norvila said she couldn’t handle it in the winter, but on the upside, she did note some positives. “The staff were wonderful and there was free parking right in front of the door.” And though she is grateful she no longer has to make the drive to Wetaskiwin, she remains uneasy about the future. “There is no guarantees as to how long it is going to last.” Alberta Health Services stated, in a press release April 25, additional dialysis capacity will be added in the short term at Red Deer Regional Hospital; a solution that has been in the works for several weeks. This additional capacity means that three Red Deer patients currently travelling for treatment will now receive dialysis in their community. AHS is working hard to find a solution that will provide further dialysis capacity in Red Deer, the press release states. There are 20 dialysis stations in Red Deer, operating from 7 a.m. to 11:15 p.m. six days a week. AHS currently has the capacity to treat 120 patients per week in Red Deer. Other dialysis spaces in Central Zone included Wetaskiwin (12 spaces), Rocky Mountain House Meet our Beautiful Little Girl (six spaces), Stettler (six spaces), Vegreville (six akenna arie ollingsworth spaces), Lloydminster (five spaces, Olds (six BORN MARCH 5, 2014 AT 2:30 AM spaces) and Drayton Weighing 7lbs 8oz. 20” long Valley (four spaces). The cost of the surgery, which will be performed in Texas, is $210,000. The family is from Wetaskiwin. Mikayla is Howard and Alice Steele’s great-granddaughter.

agreed to perform the procedure in late June. The cost of the surgery is not covered by Alberta Health Care. There is an application process the family may go through to apply for funding, but the procedure is lengthy and takes months to obtain. There have been Albertans who have applied that have been denied funding, because they went ahead and had the surgery done prior to receiving approval for the coverage. The surgery itself will cost $210,000 plus the travel costs and the requirements of staying in Texas for three weeks post operatively to ensure the child is healing properly. To help the family through this difficult time, a trust fund has been set up at Alberta Treasury Branches throughout the province and a website set up for online donations.

Please see ad in this edition for time and place. There is no charge for the evening, but donations will be gratefully received for two causes our AI Group is currently supporting. WOZA (Women of Zimbabwe Arise) continues to work through peaceful protest to press for better governance and social justice, in order to obtain basic human rights for the people of Zimbabwe. For our second cause this year we have looked southward to Columbia, whose Indigenous peoples are
among the hardest hit by the intrusion of extractive industry into their lands. Under International human rights standards, Indigenous peoples around the world have the right to make their own decisions about whether proposed resource projects on their lands are safe and acceptable. These rights are, however, often poorly protected in decisions related to oil and gas development, mining, and other extractive industries. Regulatory and review processes rarely include measures to insure that Indigenous peoples’ voices are heard. Reviews are held in locations far from the affected communities, often in a language that community members are uncomfortable with. Bias, corruption,
and other obstacles often prevail; and there is no hope for an objective hearing. As Amnesty International has witnessed, in many countries people risk their lives just to ask questions about these projects. Columbia is one of them. More than one-third of Indigenous peoples in Colombia are threatened with extermination. They face an emergency as serious as it is invisible. This crisis is fueled by violent incursions into Indigenous territories, forced displacement and the imposition of megaprojects. These projects are owned by corporations from various countries, including Canada.

Town’s engineers cautions council about spring runoff By Treena Mielke Tagish Engineering Ltd., in its report to council, stated that due to the significant snowfall this season, there will be a strong possibility of well above average snow melt runoff in the spring. Snowpack actually creates a very effective dam and snow blockages at culvert in-
lets and outlets, as well as snows pack in drainage channels and road ditches may cause or create temporary water-bodies in many areas. When the snow pack finally lets go, downstream flooding, property damage and/or road damage can easily occur, especially if the water is discharged too rapidly. Freee thaw cycles in early spring can also

exasperate these problems. Tagish Engineering recommends that areas that may be susceptible to highwater or high flow damage be inspected for potential problems, and potential snow blockages be considered prior to spring runoff to head off and, perhaps, minimize and control these potential problems.

Education changes coming By Treena Mielke A new calendar, to be implemented this fall in all Wolf Creek Schools, seems to have multiple benefits, not the least of which will be ensuring all schools within the district will follow the same format. The new calendar will also allow teachers to work collaboratively to learn new skills, create new programs and work together for the benefit of all students. “For many schools, this new calendar doesn’t represent much of a change to the number of days used for professional development or to the number of days your children will be in classes,” said Gerry Varty, assistant superintendent, learning support/ system improvement for Wolf Creek School Division, in a letter sent to parents. “What the new calendar does do is align those days, so that all schools are closed to students at the same time.” Tim Lekas, Rimbey Junior/Senior High School principal said he is pleased with the new calendar. “The aligned calendar will allow teachers to work together to plan to deliver the curriculum. Also, students in the same family, who may be going to different schools will now have the same days off.” He said the new calendar would see a regular school day running about six minutes longer to compensate for the additional time off. Lekas said the new calendar would pave the way for a changed curriculum which will be put into place by 2016. “There is so much change about to happen in Alberta in education. There will be a lot more project learning and the teachers all need to work together to plan and prepare for these coming changes.” Varty said the new calendar will allow teachers in every school to collaborate, plan and learn with each other.

QUALITY SERVICE & HONESTY Jeremy Sylvan Lake, Alberta Six years ago I purchased a jeep from the Innisfail Truck Ranch and the quality service and honesty was almost shocking. There fore I thought I would try them again, and I received the exact same care and service as I did the first time,if not more. It’s great to go to a dealer and not have the guys try and pressure you into something. I bought a 2010 chevy silverado and the sylvan truck ranch was simply a pleasure to deal with, James was very helpful and He did not try to push me into something I didn’t want. These guys are amazing, you can not go wrong with the innisfail/sylvan truck ranch, I recommend these guys to anyone looking to buy a vehicle. Big thanks to James for making my second experience with the truck ranch even better then the first time. Cheers guys! :) P.s the BULL really does stop here :)

BARNES Catherine (Kay) Pearl
Sept. 5, 1937 - Apr. 27, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine Barnes, after a tiring (second) battle with cancer. Kay passed peacefully with family at her side in the early morning of Sunday April 27, 2014 at the age of 76 years old. Her strength and spirit lives on through family and friends, and she will be dearly missed by all. Catherine will be lovingly remembered, and is survived by her son, Bruce (Janet) Barnes, and her grandchildren, Blaine (Rose), Ryan, and Kendra Barnes, and Brad and Michelle Drummond. She will be dearly missed by her two great grandchildren (whom she loved to cuddle), Addisyn and Avery Barnes. Catherine also leaves behind her brothers and sisters: Charlie, Lorraine, Clarence, Art, Greta, Wilfred and Nina, and many cousins, friends, and other family members. Special guest speaker at a banquet held in conjunction with the provincial handball tournament hosted by Bentley School was Olympic bobsleigh medalist Lyndon Rush. June Norvila Photo
Olympian medalist is guest speaker at the Bentley school banquet By June Norvila A banquet for the participants of the Bentley school who hosted ASAA Tier 2 Team Handball Provincials was staged on April 24 at the Blindman Valley Ag Centre. MC for the evening was CKGY radio station program director Tim Day. School principal Lane Moore welcomed everyone. Assistant principal Stephen Lush offered a prayer and the closing remarks. Dignitaries were in attendance including ASAA executive director John Paton, Wolf Creek School Division assistant superintendent Gerry Varty, Bentley Mayor Lynda Petten, and Ward 4 school trustee Pamela Hansen. Special guest speaker was Olympic bobsleigh medalist Lyndon Rush, born in small town Humboldt Saskatchewan, who moved to Calgary to train while with the bobsleigh teams, now from Sylvan Lake. He explained how he went from a University of Saskatoon (football) linebacker to a bobsleigh driver. “I had pulled a hamstring so couldn’t be a pusher so they (recruiters) asked me if I would like to drive and after trying it I liked it. He had been involved in Moto cross and other sports and loved the speed and adrenaline rush. He found that in bobsleigh, too.
He told of his first runs and of crashing and how it felt. He talked of the 2010 Olympic Games and the expectations placed on the team. “We were a favorite. I was overhyped on our first run with the home (Vancouver) advantage and everybody was cheering for us. I was peaked mentally. I was peaked physically. I was going for the win.” Then he explained how after crashing he had a spiritual moment as he was lying in the sled upside down feeling sorry for himself. By finding a “place of joy” he said he was able to handle the following interview and the four-man race still to come. He said you need to be thankful for what you have and hoped his message to the young people was “Be a balanced person. There is some sort of spiritual side in everyone.” Rush has done more speaking engagements since winning the medal in Vancouver and had brought along the bronze medal the four-man team had won at Vancouver to share with everyone. He has retired from competitive bobsleigh since Sochi and is now selling real estate. Bob Ronnie Catering said they were set to serve 260 people with big appetites and there was indeed lots of food to spare.
Council accepts bids Continued from page 17 “We have all seen and lived through the pool fiasco,” he said. “We don’t want to see that again. We need pro-active maintenance because it is less expensive to do pro-active maintenance than repair.” Council has budgeted
$180,000 for the replacement of the first three of the eight HVAC systems requiring replacement. The cost of HVAC Replacement and Coil Cleaning and Direct Digital Controls Ltd. is $168,580 (GST not included).
