Diane Brennan, Nanaimo city councillor, left, and Anne Kerr, Nanaimo and Area Land Trust representative on the Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability, believe improvements to the city’s riparian setback variance policy will help protect riparian and watercourse habitat.

Policy change aims to protect habitat

NANAimo hAS more oversight to protect city’s wetlands and streams. By Tamara CunnIngHam ThE NEwS BULLETiN

City officials will have more oversight to protect Nanaimo’s wetlands and streams thanks to recent policy changes, according to Nanaimo Coun. Diane Brennan. Nanaimo city councillors have

acted on recommendations from a riparian setback variance policy review, which aims to protect habitat along the banks of estuaries and rivers. The measures are anticipated to lead to broader environmental reviews by the city, as well as greater oversight of environmentally sensitive areas under pressure from development. Under the old rules, a developer would have to make sure it was safe to build near fish-bearing waterways with the help of a qualified

environmental professional, who would submit his or her report to the province. Bruce Anderson, the city’s manager of planning and design, said the developer’s habitat assessment could go through the whole riparian area regulation process with the province before city staff members and council had the opportunity to understand what was being proposed, leaving the city without a chance for a full environmental review. The outpouring of grief for victims of the Western Forest Products shooting continues this week as the memorial outside the mill continues to grow. Michael Lunn and Fred McEachern were shot and killed when a gunman opened fire at the downtown Nanaimo mill early Wednesday morning. Tony Sudar and Earl Kelly were also injured in the incident. Kevin Douglas Addison, from Nanaimo, was arrested by Nanaimo RCMP and is facing charges of firstdegree murder. Lunn added that she doesn’t hold any hatred in her heart, stating it is a waste of energy. “Michael never held a grudge, it’s just not in our vocabulary,” Lunn said. “I feel for Kevin Addison’s family. Hotel tax bylaw inches forward Nanaimo is one step closer to charging tourists a new two-per cent tax. Nanaimo city council approved the first three readings of a bylaw that would allow visitors to be charged a two-per cent tax on accommodation bills. The dollars generated will help pay for and market tourism attractions in the Harbour City. Councillors also agreed to have staff look into an agreement with the Nanaimo Hospitality Association to distribute the dollars the municipality collects on its behalf.

Rob Lawrance, city environmental planner, unleashes his inner Incredible Hulk on a handful of English Ivy, which is at the top of Nanaimo’s hit list for Invasive Pant Species Month (May). Scotch broom, Himalayan blackberry, daphne and giant hogweed are also marked for eradication.

Invasive ivy target of annual cleanup

I

PLaNtS SuPPRESS native species, reduce biodiversity. By Chris Bush The News bulleTiN

The city has declared open season on English ivy in Nanaimo throughout May, which is Invasive Plant Month. This is the second year the city has held Invasive Plant Month to raise awareness of invasive plants, their effects on local parks and what can be done about them. The city considers invasive plants as those that can negatively impact local ecosystems. On Nanaimo’s hit list are the well-established English ivy, Scotch broom and Himalayan blackberry, plus new arrivals knotweed, daphne and giant hogweed, which is particularly dangerous to humans if touched. All invasive plants compete with

and suppress native plants and reduce the city’s biodiversity. This year the city is focusing on removing English ivy. The plant climbs and often kills trees and can even cause structural damage to buildings if left unchecked. An anti-English ivy weekend work party of more than 20 volunteers got a jump start on the month on April 26-27 when they tore down ivy in Colliery Dam Park. “What we’re going to try and encourage people to do is remove ivy off the base of trees that are on their property or as part of a volunteer crew in our parks,” said Rob Lawrance, city environmental planner. “There is reason to that. They’re probably in their most invasive stage when they’re climbing because that’s when they develop seeds and birds will just carry them on in their droppings, but also because they cause damage to the tree itself.” As English ivy spreads out over the forest floor it shades and smothers plants underneath it.

In its adult stage, ivy climbs and wraps itself around trees and its weight can even lead to trees toppling in wind storms. Lawrance said a number of trees in Bowen Park are at risk due to ivy infestation. The city hosted public ivy removal and disposal demonstrations at Bowen Park in April, but for those who missed out there are plenty of upcoming activities people can take part in, including a Broombusters work party at Nanaimo Ice Centre on Saturday (May 10) and invasive plant removal at Pioneer Waterfront Plaza May 28. An English ivy work party is set for May 31, noon to 3 p.m., at Bowen Park, where residents can also drop off invasive plants they have removed from their properties for disposal at the Wall Street entrance. For more information about invasive plants and upcoming activities, please visit www. nanaimo.ca/goto/invasives. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

Policy accounts for all sensitive areas From /1

Because council was without a qualified environmental professional of its own, politicians also didn’t have the confidence of a neutral third-party opinion or the ability to question if reports were right, according to Brennan, who sat on the Advisory Committee on Environmental Sustainability in charge of reviewing the policy. With the latest changes, developers will now be required to look at all environmentally sensitive areas like marine foreshore and estuaries, not just those which are fish-

bearing, and will work with the municipality early on to go over legal requirements and potential ways to avoid dipping into riparian habitat. There will also be over-

sight by the city to make sure recommendations made by a qualified environmental professional are being achieved on the construction site and that there’s no net loss of riparian areas. “We are far more concerned about the environment now than we used to be in the past,” Brennan said. “We don’t want to see wildlife disturbed unnecessarily and the federal government had weakened their regulation in regards to this … they are the ones that said that developers only had to be concerned with fish-bearing streams. We have said not so.

“Here in Nanaimo you have to be concerned with a lot more than that.” Nanaimo and Area Land Tr u s t re p re s e n t a t i v e and advisory committee member Anne Kerr hopes improvements translate into greater conservation and protection of riparian habitat, which act as wildlife corridors. “There’s not a lot of them left, so a process to help that, both through the bylaw but also through an education process, is important,” Kerr said. The changes were supported unanimously by council.

Canoeists plucked from water by harbour patrol

six female canoeists got some help from Nanaimo harbour Patrol when their outrigger canoe capsized on the weekend. The incident happened shortly after 10:30 a.m. saturday, just inside Nanaimo harbour waters. harbour patrol vessel Osprey was en route to a medical aid aboard a tug boat when it was diverted to pick up the women, said edward Dahlgren, Nanaimo Port Authority harbour master. The women were brought ashore where they were tended to by Nanaimo Fire Rescue and B.C. Ambulance crews. One of the canoeists received a cut on her head when the craft overturned. No other injuries were reported.

All Western Forest Products’ mills were operational Monday with the exception of Nanaimo. Nanaimo will open today (May 6) with a “soft start” which means employees are welcome on the site depending on their comfort level. Grief and critical incident counselling is available and accessible to all employees. There is additional security at mills and operations.

A 38-year-old man was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital after he was stabbed in Harewood Wednesday. The assault happened shortly before 7 p.m. when police received multiple 911 calls that a man had been stabbed in the 500 block of Sixth Street where officers found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and then airlifted to Vancouver. Further investigation led Mounties to a nearby townhouse where they arrested a 37-year-old resident. Police secured the residence while they waited for a warrant to be issued to conduct a search. Duncan Gosh was charged with aggravated assault in Nanaimo provincial court Friday for the stabbing. The victim of the stabbing is healing from his injuries. “He’s expected to make a full recovery,” said Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, spokeswoman for Nanaimo RCMP.

He will make his next court appearance via video on May 13. Outside the Nanaimo courthouse, John Gustafson, Addison’s legal counsel, said the investigation was still in the early stages and he couldn’t comment on Addison’s mental condition or whether an evaluation will be ordered. “It’s far too early to tell anything about that – we’re just starting to get the facts now. Regional district reviews bus ads

I

CoSt bENEfit analysis looks at value. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

The Regional District of Nanaimo is in the process of reviewing whether advertising should be on its compressed natural gas buses. The 25 new buses currently don’t have any advertising. Dennis Trudeau, regional district general manager of transportation, said there is a cost of administering an advertising contract between Lamar Canada Ltd. and regional district funding partner B.C. Transit. There are also maintenance costs due to damage done when exterior

City’s strength must prevail When the calls started to come in about a shooting at a mill in Nanaimo Wednesday morning, it seemed impossible to believe. A gunman opening fire on four men going about their daily work routine is something that happens in New York or Detroit. Not in our sleepy little town of Nanaimo. As the story unfolded, residents moved about in shock, unable to process what they were hearing from friends, neighbours and the media. That’s because it’s never happened before – not in our little piece of paradise in the Pacific Ocean, anyway. As the shock subsided, we moved on to other emotions, such as sadness and outrage, and sought to find answers and lay blame. What we shouldn’t do is be fearful. We aren’t invulnerable to violence, but we must be strong, not scared, when these crimes happen, and also when they don’t. Nanaimo is nothing if not resilient. This is a city that overcame one of the worst mining disasters in Canadian history and continued over the next 125 years to build a tight-knit community. Nanaimo is not about a lone gunman who chose to hurt others through violence. It is about charity, with dozens of nonprofits societies dedicated to helping children and families grow and prosper. It is about community, raising money through events like the Silly Boat Regatta and the dragon boat festival to benefit charities for children and healthcare. It is about enjoying life, with annual celebrations to mark contributions of farming and mining to the history and the fabric of society. All this is brought together by thousands of dedicated volunteers who love to help as much as they love this city. As the satellite trucks and helicopters retreat, the healing continues as the community supports the families and friends of the killed and injured. Nanaimo is about all of the good things that we, as a community, value in life. Cost-cutting measures impact seniors’ care To the Editor,

Re: Critics say care model fails patients, April 8. How did we get so far off the mark? When did it become acceptable to discount the importance of quality control that affects those we love the most? It was 2002, and the governmentsanctioned act was named The Health and Social Services Improvement Delivery Act. Yes, that fifth word is improvement, not impoverished. Moving along into 2003 we

have The Health Sector Partnership Agreement, and just so you know, you are not the partner, but for-profit businesses are. They are the contractors chosen to deliver various services in healthcare facilities. The original public model was disassembled and put back together again like a poorly connected jigsaw puzzle. In Nanaimo at Wexford Creek, the term quality of life has taken a firm backseat to the inauspicious drone of the words ‘cost cutting.’ Cost-cutting, that is, for those at the very bottom

Re: Police forced into social work, Editorial, May 1. While I appreciate the comments your paper is making about the erosion of the social safety net and health infrastructure as it relates to vulnerable people with mental illness, it is incorrect to say that police officers are being “forced into social work.” It is heartening to see that compassion and understanding are increasing amongst police officers responding to the socio-economic and psycho-social realities in B.C. The contacts police officers make with citizens should not be described as ‘social work.’ Social work is a profession with a distinct education and a specialized skill set. Social workers have a code of ethics and professional standards that are very different than those of police officers. Your editorial correctly identifies high caseloads for existing social workers and lack of care available to people with complex health conditions. However there is no mention of the high number of social work jobs that are being eliminated from the health care system in B.C. There is a gap in service delivery that is leaving communities reeling with how to manage the kind of complex problems that people are left to cope with on their own. Hope springs eternal that the B.C. government will demonstrate leadership, vision and commitment to providing care and services to our most marginalized and fragile citizens before it is too late for some of them to survive their challenging and tragic lives.

I hope the media will focus on the heroes of this sad story and not the perpetrator. Last week, I picked up the phone and called a friend and said I didn’t want to wait until it was ‘convenient’ for us to see each other. I wanted to make sure that I didn’t wait until it was too late to tell them how important they are to me. You see, my friend worked at the company where

this senseless tragedy occurred, and had changed jobs only recently. Being able to speak with them brought me a sense of relief that I had another chance to make things right, and not put off making important people important to us. I know how precious this gift is, because someone else out there isn’t going to get that same chance to tell their friend or loved one how much they matter. Life is precious.

of the pay scale. These individuals, unlike Island Health executives, directly relate to and care for Wexford’s seniors each day. If we start to believe that contracting out things like housekeeping and nutrition as well as paying health care aides less is wise streamlining, we are buying a warped bill of goods. Cops’ compassion Shooting a reminder that life is precious isn’t social work Re: Two men dead in mill shooting, May 1. There are simply no words to aptly describe the shock and grief that I felt after learning of the horrific shooting at a mill here in Nanaimo. These victims were simply doing their jobs in order to pay bills and take care of their families. Because of the violent actions of another person, their future is changed forever. My heart aches for those employees who witnessed the tragedy and are dealing with the trauma. What motivates someone to conceive in his own mind, plan and then carry out such a violent act against others? I cannot make sense of something so senseless, and there is a feeling of powerlessness that seems foreign to me. I am awestruck by those valiant workers who helped subdue the shooter and ensure that no more lives were lost. Their courage comes at a great personal sacrifice, but

S

ometimes things in life can be better the second time around and that appears to be the case for multi-talented entertainer Steve Martin. After having an illustrious career as an actor and standup comedian, Martin now finds himself touring around North America as a Grammy-winning recording artist. “I’ve just had a resurgence of performing live,” Martin told the Bulletin. “I used to do it in the ’70s and I really hadn’t done it until now. It’s proving to be much more fun than it was in the ’70s.” The last time Martin toured this heavily was over 30 years ago during the prime of his standup comedy career, which saw many of his records reach platinum status and won him win a Grammy Award in 1978 for best comedy album. On Sunday (May 11) Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brick-

ell will be performing at the Port Theatre. “It’s going to be music and it’s going to be comedy,” Martin said about the show. “We try recreate as closely as possible, the sound on the record, when we play live. In those songs that we did on the record, we actually do try to give the audience the sound that they actually hear on the record.” The magic for Martin all began when he was a teenager working at Disneyland in California performing magic tricks. He became interested in the banjo as the folk music scene grew in popularity and although he ended up going into standup comedy, his acts often would include the banjo. After a long hiatus as a recording artist, Martin released, The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo, in 2009, which was his first full-length non-comedy record. The record featured Vince Gill and Dolly Parton and received a Grammy Award in 2010 for Best Bluegrass Album. In more recent years, Martin is perhaps best known as

an actor, particularly for his roles in Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Jerk, Cheaper by the Dozen and It’s Complicated. Martin recalled his time working with Canadian actor John Candy in the ’80s. “Oh, that was just great. He was so sweet and delightful. You look at that movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles and you can just tell what a great dramatic actor he was, along with his comedy,” Martin said. “We got along great. He was a real pleasure to work with. We ad-libbed a lot in that movie ... it was a real pleasure to work with John.” Aside from being a musician, standup comedian, actor and script writer, author of various essays, short stories, screenplays and books, Martin is an avid collector of fine art. He is currently working on curating an exhibit on Group of Seven member Lawren Harris, which will go in display at the Art Gallery of Ontario sometime next year. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

JR. FOOTBALL team evaluating young players.

Junior B T-men start season The junior B Nanaimo Timbermen will enter the lacrosse box this week. The city’s Pacific North West Junior Lacrosse League team opens the season against Saanich on Wednesday (May 7) at the Nanaimo Ice Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.

BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

The rebuilding Vancouver Island Raiders began pouring the foundation. Nanaimo’s Canadian Junior Football League club held its spring camp this past weekend at Merle Logan Field, with coaches looking at 90 players. “It was really good,” said Brian Ridgeway, the team’s new head coach. “We wanted to focus on skill development because our average age at theis camp was 19. We had a lot of young guys; we wanted to make sure that we develop them.” He said the coaches “didn’t want to beat [players] up too much” during spring camp, but definitely wanted to try to gauge work ethic as well as talent and knowledge of the game. “We came up with very basic playbooks, just so we can evaluate and let guys fly around, but the big focus was on error detection and correction on the fundamentals,” Ridgeway said. That said, there were opportunities for guys to impress with playmaking and hard hits. Micheal Ritchott, Raiders running back, said he didn’t see any drop-off in intensity over the off-season. “It hasn’t changed,” he said. “We’re going harder, maybe, because a lot of rookies have a lot to prove this year, and so do the vets.” The coach was happy

with what he saw from guys in skill positions, as the quarterbacks, receivers and running backs all showed well. Jaeden Marwick returns at the QB position and two others at camp, Michael Lemoine and Brody Taylor, also had strong performances. Ritchott was encouraged by the offence’s potential. “We went out, we executed fairly well,” he said. “There’s a lot we could work on but it is

Will they be worth investing a couple of years in to make them a quality player?” He’ll also need to determine mutual interest, of course, and also off-field goals. “It can’t just be about football at this level,” said the coach. “We’re trying to grow young men to fit into the community.”

They set one world record, now they’ll try for another. Nanaimo’s Youth Sticking Together is planning a Guinness World Records attempt at the longest outdoor street hockey game this August. The group set the indoor hockey record last summer. “I am confident the organizers and participants will make the event memorable and successful for everyone,” said Bill Bestwick, the event’s honorary chairman, in a press release. “Events like this in our community make you proud to live here.” The attempt is planned for Aug. 9-12 at the Lions Sports Centre lacrosse box on Wall Street.

Acme Timbermen score huge 22-6 blowout win The senior B Nanaimo Timbermen kept pace with a tough team, then ran circles around a weaker one. The Acme Painting Timbermen earned a tie and a win in West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association action on the weekend at the Nanaimo Ice Centre, drawing 9-9 with the Ladner Pioneers on Saturday and then hammering the Langley Warriors 22-6 the following evening. In the blowout, Ryan

Forslund had a monster game with five goals and six assists. Jon Diplock had four goals and three assists and Blair Pinnock also had a fourgoal performance. Cody Keating had two goals and five assists and Chris O’Hara and Rick Fields also scored twice each. Ryan Clark had a goal and seven assists and other scorers were Nick Agius and Jordi Bryant. James Spence had four assists and Pat Mallough was the winning goalie.

The previous day, Nanaimo sprinted to a 7-2 firstperiod lead over Ladner but couldn’t sustain the margin. Forslund had two goals and two assists, Clark and Fields also had two-goal games and O’Hara, Diplock and Drew Miles were other scorers. GAME ON … The senior B Timbermen visit the North Shore Indians on Friday (May 9) in West Vancouver and the Tri-City Bandits on Saturday in Port Coquitlam.

The junior Timbermen don’t have experience closing out lacrosse games, and that showed in their home opener. Nanaimo’s junior A lacrosse team twice held two-goal leads in the third period on Saturday at Frank Crane Arena, but couldn’t pin down the win against the New Westminster Salmonbellies. The ’Bellies tied the game with their goalie pulled late, then scored the only four goals of overtime. “We felt like we were

going to go and get that win. It was our game to take,” said Ken Morrison, coach of the junior T-men. The offence stalled in OT, he said, and he felt that surrendering goals in the extra frame “took the wind out of our sails.” The Salmonbellies threw 72 shots at Timbermen goalie Matt Zeller over 70 minutes, and a lot of those shots were quality chances. Morrison said there wasn’t enough talking on defence, but he said most of the problems stemmed from the transition game. “We had a lot of breakdowns on line changes… with the offence coming off the floor in time,” he said. “They fast-breaked us quite a bit.”

Brett Hawrys led Nanaimo’s offence with a hat trick and three assists and Brett Fleming had two goals and four assists. Corey Shires and Travis Mickelson had a pair of goals apiece and Nick Sanderson and Jaeden Gilles were the other scorers. The next day the Timbermen lost 18-10 to the Coquitlam Adanacs on the road. Shires had a hat trick, Mitch Parker had six points and Hawrys scored twice. Fleming, Sanderson, Gilles and Andrew Miller also tallied. GAME ON … The Timbermen host the Port Coquitlam Saints on Saturday (May 10) at 5 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Many Nanaimo residents have not yet had the experience of visiting our own cultural gem: Gabriola Island. If you are one of these people who have not visited Gabriola, this summer might be the perfect time to visit. Known as the Isle of the Arts, Gabriola is home to dozens of world-renowned and emerging artists, and believed to have the highest density of artists in any community in Canada. Only 20 minutes by ferry from downtown Nanaimo, Gabriola Island has much to offer, including great hiking, diving, kayaking, fishing, cycling, boating and artists’ studios galore. Take in a play or concert or simply relax by the sea. Gabriola Island has quiet beaches, forested parks, and an abundance of wildlife. Gabriola is one of the most populous of the Gulf Islands and its residents enjoy a relaxed lifestyle and a strong sense of community. Gabriola Island has an area of 57.73 square kilometres and a population of more than 4,000 people. Tourism plays a role in the island’s economy and a number of Gabriola’s residents commute to Nanaimo on a daily basis for work. In addition, the island is known for its many artisans, with thriving cottage industries in pottery and other arts and crafts. Gabriola is home to a large number of artists and artisans inspired by its natural setting. The Gabriola Arts Council, a multi-disciplinary umbrella organization, supports the island’s artists, produces events, and sponsors community education in the arts. Both private studios and

This summer, Nanaimo will be hit by a tsunami of athletic energy when nearly 4,000 participants in the B.C. Summer Games arrive on July 17. Residents are warned not to take cover, but to come out in droves and welcome this wave of visitors with their special brand of Nanaimo hospitality. The local economic impact has been estimated to reach as high as $2.6 million. That’s inclusive of the goods and services purchased in the lead-up to the Games and the money spent on hospitality services like hotel rooms, restaurants, souvenirs and all those extra items people buy when on holidays. It’s anticipated that families of the athletes, officials and coaches will spend at least a couple of extra days in the area as tourists. It’s up to Nanaimo to encourage these stays and to make them as memorable as possible. In addition, there’s also a Legacy Fund which represents the difference between the amount the Friends of the Games group receives in contributions from the local business community and

the amount spent to stage the Games. In 2002, Nanaimo set a provincial record for the fund and the obvious goal in 2014 is to beat our past record. The Games provide an opportunity for the development of athletes, coaches, and officials in preparation for higher levels of competition. There are 19 sports represented this year involving up to 3,900 athletes, coaches and officials from all over the province. Organizers are seeking around 3,200 volunteers with a wide range of skills and talents to ensure success. There is an incredible variety of volunteer needs, from office assistance to security and photography to chaperones with time commitments ranging from a few hours during the Games to the planning and preparation going on now. The easiest and fastest way to become part of this success is to sign up as a volunteer online at www.bcgames.org and include yourself in this phenomenal event which will prove to enrich our community in many ways.

James William Hall Feb. 10 1923 ~ April 30, 2014

James William Hall “Jimâ€? passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, April 30, 2014, in his 92nd year with family by his side. Loving father of Sharon (Ron); Miller of Port Alberni and Heather (David) Stewart, Nanaimo. Predeceased by his wife June (06/23/1925 to 05/09/2005), his parents Raymond and Mary, sister Mary Shaw and granddaughter Becky Randall. Fondly remembered by Grandchildren Felicia and Andrea and great Grandchildren Christian, Brady, Tianna, Caylee, Caleb and Jessica.  Remembered with love by all the extended family and friends. Jim was born in Utica, NY and after the death of Jim’s Father ‘Raymond’, (1888/1936) his mother ‘MARY’ moved the family to Nanaimo. Jim completed school in Nanaimo, and worked in the Coastal Forest Industry before joining the 26th Field Regiment RCA/XII MB Dragoons in 1942. He served overseas in France, Belgium and Holland, before being returned to Canada to prepare for the push on the Pacific Front. After the war Jim returned to the forest industry in the Alberni Valley before re-enlisting in the RCAF in 1953 and working with Transport Squadron on Lancaster’s and other Radial Engines as an aero engine technician. With the introduction of turbines, Jim served as a MSEOP in Comox and Gypsonville MB. Jim retired from the RCAF in 1968 in Comox,  and after relocating to Nanaimo, worked with the BC Vocational Institute (Malaspina College) as a heavy equipment operator, where he retired in 1986. After enjoying family camping for many years, on arrival in Nanaimo, Jim bought a small boat so that he could enjoy the wonders of the Pacific West Coast with his growing extended family. He found ‘small’ was not big enough, and with each new boat he got a larger more comfortable model. He and June enjoyed many summers of retirement on the “June Lynnâ€? and the “Skipperâ€? cruising the waters of Georgia Strait and the Alberni Canal. No service by request. A family service, at a date to be determined, will be at the Nanaimo Heritage Cemetery, Townsite Rd., Nanaimo. Jim supported many charities over his lifetime, but those wishing to make a memorial donation in his name may do so by supporting the Nanaimo Child Development Center (mailto:info@nanaimocdc. com) or other charity of choice.

Website combines passions

VIU GRAD wins award for web project.

By Marilyn assaf Student Kim Wetten combined her two passions – birding and physical fitness – to create a new website for Nanaimo park users. The website provides information about public parks in Nanaimo, including photographs, bird species and an estimate of how many steps it takes to walk through park trails. Entitled Steps, Sparrows and Smartphones: Modernizing Nanaimo’s Parks and Birding Information, Wetten’s presentation about the new website won first place at a year-end research and scholarly activity event held at Vancouver Island University. “This undergradu-

Workshop offers basic information on dementia care Alzheimer’s disease is the second most feared disease for Canadians as they age. And with many Nanaimo residents 50 years of age or older, dementia is becoming a pressing health issue locally. To help, the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. brings its free workshop, Getting to Know Dementia, to the city on May 16.

“Participants will receive basic information on dementia and the impact it has on the individual, their caregivers, and their support network,” said Jane Hope, the society’s support and education coordinator for the central and North Island. Sushi Eh manager Johnson Chen and Helen Liu, Sushi Eh co-owner, celebrate the restaurant’s grand re-opening with a donation to the hospital foundation to say thank you to their new community. Photo contributed

Medical crisis leads to donation

The Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation needs your help to purchase an Infant LED Phototherapy System.

SUSHI EH gives money raised from grand opening to foundation.

Helen Liu, her husband, and two children recently moved to Nanaimo from Beijing to acquire and operate the Sushi Eh restaurant on Hammond Bay Road. While the couple was busily renovating the restaurant, Helen’s husband was suddenly faced with a medical crisis and underwent surgery at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Helen was “emotionally touched” by the respect

she, her children, and husband received during such a difficult time. When Sushi Eh celebrated its grand re-opening on April 6, Helen and her family decided to donate the day’s earnings to the hospital in honour of the care they received from medical professionals. As a result, Sushi Eh presented $1,472.85 to the Nanaimo and District Hospital Foundation. The couple makes it clear that this gift is a way to express gratitude for medical care, but also to say thank you to all of the people who have helped in the transition to a new home.
