Visitors to Castlegar will help to fund efforts to bring more of their kind to town. Committee reports took up much of Monday night’s Castlegar City Council meeting, but a few new initiatives added interest to the standard procedures. Council is moving forward with an Accommodation Tax Bylaw. The new bylaw would see two per cent added to current taxes at hotels and similar accommodations. On hand to show their support were representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and accommodation providers. Council gave the bylaw three readings and will consider adoption at the next regular council meeting. The tax increase will then go to the Province for final ap-

proval. The Regional District Hotel Room Tax is already collected in 45 municipalities throughout B.C. Councillor McIntosh commented, “The reason this has gone ahead is because of tremendous leadership on behalf of the Chamber and the board that sat down at the table to hammer this thing out, because it was not easy. So, kudos to them, this has been a long time in coming.” The tax would be collected by the province and then sent back to the community to be administered by a committee to promote tourism marketing, programs and projects. Initial estimates indicate the tax may generate $50,000 in annual revenue to be used to attract tourists to the city.

Points made on teachers’ job action JIM SINCLAIR Castlegar News Editor
Up to the minute comments from the government side (BCPSEA – BC Public School Employers’ Association) are not plentiful in regard to its ongoing negotiations with the BC Teachers Federation. The communications department with the provincial Ministry of Education, however, has supplied information pertinent to the process. Solicited email from the Ministry has contained links to recent correspondence countering the teachers union which claims in
a recent radio ad: “Across BC, government is forcing school boards to cut programs, teachers and support for kids with special needs, all because per-student funding is $1,000 below the national average.” In an April 30 letter to BCTF President Jim Iker, Peter Cameron, on behalf of the BCPSEA Bargaining Committee asserts, “BCPSEA has tabled positions that demonstrate our willingness to negotiate a fair agreement for teachers. However, this agreement must also be fair to other public sector employees and affordable for B.C. taxpay-
ers.” The employers suggest the teachers’ demands are out of line with other public sector deals. “We hope both sides will be equally motivated to find solutions at the table,” declared Education Minister Peter Fassbender in an April 17 statement, “rather than letting the BCTF’s strike drift on indefinitely.” Local teachers’s sentiments were sounded by Kootenay Columbia Teachers’ Union President Andy Davidoff, who told the Castlegar News in a May 6 email: “Teachers continue to
be concerned that Premier Clark and her government appear to be trying to provoke an escalation of our job action by continuing to insist on a 10 year contract with no clearly delineated provisions for the last four years and threatening to lock us out and imposing a $5,000,000 “fine” by sending us a bill for our June benefits’ premiums, even if we are still teaching our students, coaching school teams, communicating with parents and preparing report cards. Teachers want a negotiated deal and not a fight.”
Final reading of SD 20 budget passes with little fanfare Art Harrison Trail Times
The School District 20 (SD 20) Board of Trustees and senior staff gathered for a special open board meeting at the Kootenay Columbia Learning Centre Friday for the third and final reading of the 20142015 Budget Bylaw. In spite of the meeting being open
to the public a grand total of one member of the public, a media representative, was on hand to observe the 20-minute, near unanimous vote, with only one trustee, alternate B.C. Public School Employers Association representative, Jen Carter, in opposition to the budget. The vote provides final approval of the
close to $41 million budget for the coming school year, which the board and staff were able to balance after weeks of deliberation and consideration of a “long list” of potential cost savings necessary to eliminate over $860,000 of projected deficit. At the April 28 open board meeting where the bylaw had its first and second

readings, trustees voiced the personal struggles they had experienced in trying to decide where cuts could be made with the least impact on students within the district. The finalized budget will see the reduction of teaching staff based on projected reduced student enrollment, the elimination of a position in the finance department, and the reduction of one trades position. “There will be four less teachers but those should be covered via retirements and those on temporary contracts (people whose job is already known to end at the end of June,)” Superintendent for Schools for SD 20, Greg Luterbach, said in an email. “There will be one less accountant through the loss of the SD 10 financial services contract, and one less electrician, which is occurring through
natural attrition.” Luterbach said the remainder of changes to staffing costs are to be achieved by the shifting of costing between various budget lines and some possible changes to staffing hours in some positions. Other savings were found in cutting supply costs and pursuing negotiations with the City of Trail to encourage them to pay a portion of the costs of maintaining the Fieldhouse indoor athletic facility. “This year’s budget was a slightly easier process because it was developed by senior school district staff and they know the district and where cuts could be made without hurting the kids,” said trustee, Mark Wilson. “Previous years were way more complicated because schools were being closed and it became much more political.”

State-of-the-college discussed at Selkirk
JIM SINCLAIR
Castlegar News Editor
Selkirk College’s main Castlegar campus played host to the Chamber of Commerce ‘Business after Business’ mixer last week. Enjoying the ambiance and appetizers on hand in the college’s faculty lounge, a number of Chamber members got together to be informally brought up to speed on a number of college topics by president/CEO Angus Graeme. The recent success of Selkirk’s collegiate hockey squad was touched upon first as Graeme got into his video-enhanced presentation. “There’s a lot of stuff to feel good about at Selkirk on any given day,” Graeme began, “but to win the BC championship for the second year in a row is a real accomplishment. Kim (Verigin) has worked really hard over the last seven, eight years
to bring us from the bottom of the league to the top.” The morale-boosting quality of a strong athletic program was touched upon by the school’s top executive. “Those early games would have… 30 people, max… and a bunch of those were the scratched players and the bus drivers. Now we’re seeing great community support from Castlegar in particular and, of course, people from around the region. When I’m walking around the streets of Nelson, even when the Leafs are doing well, people are saying (of the Saints) ‘that’s great hockey!’” Graeme supplied a wide ranging, well-rounded overview of the college, covering such topics as curriculum-based strategies, student-body demographics… and (given the roughly half-century age of the campus) the rapidly-developing issue of infrastructure im-
provements. On the upbeat side of things, Graeme focused on the importance of the institution to the surrounding community. “If you’re a follower of the community college movement,” he stated, “you’d see that it’s really about the next generation of learner, leader and business leader, but also about supporting economic development. “I’ve got dollar figures here, but in behind that are all of the student stories,” the CEO related. “We just had our 48th grad ceremony (April 25) and we graduated about 780 students from various programs. About 250 showed up for their cap and gown… it’s just a great community event.” As for the gravity of the fiscal impact generated by the college, Graeme continued. “Our operating grant from government is about $27 million and we com-
bine another 11 or 12 (million) to that every year… including the management of about a $7 million endowment that goes toward our bursaries, scholarships and other activities. We inject about $38 million of activity into the regional economy.” The president told the group of about a dozen that Selkirk College has about 350 full-time equivalent employees. “If you add up the parttimers and on-call folks… it’s closer to 500. It’s about a $30 million payroll,” he said. Another of the many interesting points made by Graeme involved input he’s heard regarding the relative status of schools offering two-year courses as opposed to four-yeardegree-granting universities. He spoke of discussions he’s had on the question ‘when is Selkirk College going to grow up and become a university?’

Selkirk College President/CEO Angus Graeme gives a state-of-the-college address to Castlegar Chamber of Commerce business after business mixer on April 30.
“I’m really proud of the community college movement, and being part of that movement,” he asserted. “We decided not to join some of our brothers and sisters and become a teaching university. It affects us in some ways, but 70 programs and disciplines in an institution of our size would not be possible if we went to a fouryear degree-granter.” and generous local businesses supplying space, and barbecue for the club’s annual bottle drive/bake sale. Regional rivalries are common, and the best ones are the the good-natured ones. Here, at what we like to refer to as the Crossroads of the Kootenays we’ve got a healthy amount of self-esteem and the same is true at the Castlegar News. We don’t feel we’re better than any of our regional neighbours… just… maybe… a little better... situated.
Operations Manager, Jennifer Cowan
There’s a fair bit going on here of late… the staff is growing to the point where it’s outgrowing the banner at the bottom of this page. The number is up because so are the responsibilities. Consolidation is underway – a certain amount of business relating to Nakusp and Rossland is now being looked after here and the increase has led to the hiring of an Operations Manager named Jennifer Cowan. Jennifer brings a resumé riddled with experience and success to her latest challenge and she’s been warmly welcomed to the offices here within the Fireside Inn. Like anyone stepping into a new environment, Jennifer is eager to get the ball rolling, to start meeting people and establishing contacts. First and foremost, she plans to solidify the position of the Castlegar News and expand on its commitment to serving and informing the community. We want to hear from you.

Spots in Time - Gord Turner
From a Penny to a nickel overnight The longer I live the more I delight in life’s twists, turns and quirks. I especially like those turns that stay with you even over 40 years later. When I was 19 or so I worked at a restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, called The New Yorker. It was a Jewish restaurant and I had fun learning all about Jewish food, culture, customs and religion. Mind you, I was the only Shiksa (Gentile white woman) who worked in the restaurant. Fortunately for me, there was the manager/hostess named Penny. Penny was about 15 years older than me and knowing that I was far away from home with no family support whatsoever, she decided to take me under her wing. Penny was a great lot of fun and each day brought a laugh as she played her practical jokes and good-naturedly poked fun at me for all my Shiksa ways. In a way Penny became a sort of surrogate mother/older sister. She would give me tips on everything from manicures to recipes to hair styles and never failed to correct my English. We became close and yet, curiously, I was never invited to her house, nor did I invite her to mine. Outside of work we had no contact whatsoever. Then one day while I was at work Penny asked me if I would like to go out to dinner. Knowing I had no monCindy Amaral Production Manager

ey for such a luxury I declined. Quickly sensing my predicament Penny reassured me that the offer was her treat. Too proud for my own good, I declined. Penny insisted…and insisted… and insisted even offering to pay for my babysitter. Finally, I gave in. But when I heard where she wanted to take me presented a huge problem for me. She wanted to treat me to a steak at one of the finest restaurants Columbus had to offer at that time. The only problem for me was that I didn’t have a fancy dress to wear and where we were going was a very formal place. After explaining the situation to Penny, she looked at me for a bit and said, “Why don’t you come over to my place tonight after work? I think we’re about the same size and I just might have a dress that will fit you.” I agreed, and so that evening I went to her home. When she led me into her bedroom to look through her closet I was taken back by the many beautiful and utterly expensive dresses and shoes she had crammed in there. I’m sure my eyes bugged out of my head. “Pick any one you want,” she generously said. I finally settled on a beautiful emerald green silk dress with sequins. It was a cocktail dress in every

sense of the word. That night was magical. There I was, a gauche 19-year-old girl, sitting in the finest restaurant I had ever been to, dressed to the nines. Her husband was charming, Penny was sweet and funny and I was having the time of my life. I felt like Cinderella. As we said our goodbyes, Penny gave me a long and tender hug. I thought I saw a tear in her eye, but that could just have been my imagination. That was the last time I ever saw Penny. The next morning, still in high spirits, I went to work hoping to thank Penny once again for such a generous gesture, but she wasn’t there. In fact, I doubt she was even in the state anymore. It seems Penny, good old trustworthy Penny, had been robbing the restaurant blind and the night of the dinner had taken the last two or so days earnings home with her instead of to the bank. It seems my wonderful, shiny Penny was actually a dull nickel and had basically robbed the restaurant and fled into the night. That dinner out was most likely paid for with Penny’s proceeds. Wherever you are Penny, thank you for the night and your friendship towards a scared girl far away from home. Jim Sinclair Editor

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
A small change... matters Editor: I need to make some corrections to the article from April 17, on page A3. We were very happy to be recognized and featured in the paper , as we have spent the last eight months forming Wakun ‘s Lodge Drum Group, in order to bring this spiritual practice into our lives and the lives of the community.
Hospice director honoured Editor: On behalf of the Castlegar Hospice Society, I am pleased to announce that Executive Director Suzanne Lehbauer has been awarded the 2014 BC Hospice Palliative Care Asso-
Down in the dumps Please find attached the photographs taken over the last couple of weeks between two local popular areas to recreate - Indian Flats and Hall Rd. These images are a dozen of the sights we have documented, there are more at these locations and likely this is just the tip of the iceberg. Being that I am a contractor in the roofing industry my experience leeds me to believe this is the doing of a contractor as there are at least eight house lots of roofing shingles dumped at the sites documented. Some of these sites included torch on, a product that requires specialized roofing equipment, not something a homeowner would have the experience or equipment for. The dumping has occurred over a period of at least a year, so one can assume this is regular practice of the contractor involved. As a licensed,
I was very careful to state that the name of our group is Wakun’s Lodge Drum Group. Wakun means Grandmother, and Wakun’s Lodge is a body of oral teaching suitable for a people who have been cut off from their physical roots. To simply shorten the name to Wakun does not give the correct message. I understand the space constraint of the paper, but we must be careful not to make decisions which change the meanings of the offering. What, when I was talking
about us working together as Canadians, I was expanding on my commitment to Idle No More. I have learned a lot by this experience, and am not sure I would do an off-the-cuff interview again. For me, it may be best to prepare written statements until I have more experience speaking with the media.
ciation & Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem Award Recognizing Enhanced Endof-Life Care for all British Columbians. The award has been given for a Grief Drop-In Support program developed by Ms. Lehbauer. Ms. Lehbauer has previously won the award in 2009 and 2012 and Castlegar was
the first rural community to win the award. Please join me in congratulating Suzanne for the recognition of hospice palliative care in our community and region.

Community Health care frustration in Thrums
JIM SINCLAIR
Castlegar News Editor
Bob White is a cancer patient with a positve outlook on life. The Thrums resident projects energy and optimism, but has been in contact with the Castlegar News about some concerns raised during his ongoing treatment. “For the past two years I have gone to the Castlegar Health Centre (used to be a hospital) to visit the lab every four months for blood testing,” White related in a late April letter. “As I approached the lab lobby it was standing room only and the looks of dismay on the people’s faces as they looked at me approaching made me sick. Most of us in there are seniors and are in need of help. I was reminded of puppy dog eyes.”
White says he can remember such occasions that took no longer than 20 minutes, so the frustrating change inspired him to look for an explanation. “I talked to the hospital and was told a fellow in Kelowna has reduced our hours of service due to a shortage of technicians,” White recalled. “His name is Mark Anderson and I called him (office1-250-4204114). He claimed this action is a result of a lack of health care workers and that this was the same situation in Trail, Nelson, and Cranbrook.” White also registered his concern with Katrine Conroy’s office, to be reportedly told, “they can’t do anything about this as they can’t be advocates.” Interior Health’s
Mark Anderson told the Castlegar News via email that time spent waiting for service can vary. “Lab wait times for non-urgent, out-patient testing at any of our sites can vary depending on the day of the week and time of day,” said the spokesperson. “Mornings, in general, are busier. On Mondays and the day after a long weekend we do have more people coming in so waits will be longer. We were short staffed in Castlegar the Tuesday after Easter, which also contributed to longer waits that day.” “I phoned the Nelson Hospital and told my story,” said White. ‘Come on in’ I was told, ‘be prepared for a wait of between five to 10 minutes,’ they are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and work through lunch hour.
“I’m off to Nelson tomorrow, which is too bad because I’m really making the situation worse in Castlegar because I’m not supporting my local community. I need health care, fighting cancer is a tough fight, fighting the health care system is too much and I need to go where I can get the help I need now.” Anderson conceded there are more factors involved in the scenario. “ Un f o r t u n a t e l y, right now we are dealing with some staffing challenges and there may be times when waits could be longer than usual. I know waits can be frustrating for residents,” he concluded. “It’s important to know that urgent testing for emergency department patients is prioritized and will be done quickly.”
me on the road, in your community, on Parliament Hill and online,” says Boutelier, “to demonstrate to our political leaders that we will no longer stand for their casual neglect of our environment, our first nations and our climate.” This is an ambitious project to say the least. Boutelier said the Bonanza Pass (Paulson Summit) was the toughest leg of
the trip since leaving the Island, and perhaps the toughest of all as he was planning to give the Kootenay Pass a miss, heading for Nelson and the B a l fou r- C r aw ford Bay ferry after leaving Castlegar. That being said, it’s not likely the Rockies will be any picnic for the one-wheeler. You may keep up with Joseph and his ride at unityfortheclimate.ca

Robson resident grateful for second chance. JIM SINCLAIR Castlegar News Editor
Rob Nutter feels fortunate with every step he takes… everything he does is looked upon as a bonus by the Robson resident. Nutter is in possession of an aftermarket heart and kidney and he’s approaching the one-year anniversary of the surgical odyssey that has literally given him a new lease on life. A dangerous virus had wreaked havoc with Nutter’s heart, and over the course of 18 years had done such extensive damage that a mechanical organ was employed to keep the Castlegar area citizen alive. Heart trouble had adversely affected the kidneys… leading to the major transplant effort. The mechanical heart was effective, but cumbersome given the outboard power pack and computer required, and if it were

who helped me… by helping others coming up behind me… going through the same problems,” said Nutter. “The program I’m helping… my family got to use when I went in for a transplant.” Nutter, an avid outdoorsman, had one thought when he had regained consciousness following his marathon medical ordeal. “Grouse Grind,” he uttered from his hospital bed the first moment he was able. He
had conquered the popular North Vancouver challenge before and was eager to accomplish it again. “On June 14 I’m hiking up the Grouse Grind with the surgeon who did the operation, and transplant nurses are coming along, he related on May 6, “...it’s pretty cool!” Nutter is hoping for a good turnout at the Cartwright’s fundraising event which kicks off this Saturday at 5 p.m.

After Saturday night the pulse-quickening phenomenon known as Castlegar Sculpturewalk will be all the more intense. Saturday night will
feature artists and invited guests at the Kootenay Gallery for a sort of pep rally, the kind where everyone’s a winner. Sure there will be extra winners next fall when assorted voting is done. Kudos will be dis-
pensed for outstanding achievement and public response… etc., and it’ll be nice for talent to be fairly rewarded. But everyone who lays eyes on these works can be called a winner, and therefore, so can the com-
munity of Castlegar. Get set to hear more, and keep hearing more about Castlegar Sculpturewalk 2014… as soon as next week’s print edition, and this weekend at www.castlegarnews.com

Then we bypassed Kelowna and headed for Beaverdell, admiring the evidence of the now defunct historic Kettle Valley railway. Then the chilling hail hit but a single glass of beer at Rock Creek restored us us. We weaved our way north along the valley, through wine country, to Penticton. “Piece of cake,” said George the next day as he looked at the route to Hope. The winding back road trail to Princeton was a joy but the last stretch home was not. First, we were hit by snow, then hail that numbed our faces as we descended from Manning Park. I thought I had made a significant anatomical discovery when it appeared that the icy wind blasting up my right nostril seemed to exit through my left ear. Of course, it could have been the hole in the left side of my helmet. There was one other little challenge. The panel failed so I had to peer at my handheld GPS to figure out what speed we were doing then shout at the top of my voice when George exceeded the posted limit. We made it safe and sound. “Next year, Sid?” “I’ll get back to you, George.” keith.morgan@drivewaybc.ca
RIDE BIG. LIVE BIG.
Question OF THE WEEK:
Driveway editor Keith Morgan writes today about how a 3-day rally along picturesque B.C. roads turned him to the idea of a B.C. summer ‘staycation’. Will you do a road trip holiday though B.C. this year, and if so where to? Go to DrivewayCanada.ca to submit your answer.
?
QUESTION OF THE WEEK!
Safety Tip: As the weather continues to get warmer, drivers should expect to share the road with more motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians. When turning at an intersection, use extra caution and look out for these other road users to help keep our roads safe.

Need to put some more pep in your family’s step?
Apple Guy means business jim sinclair Castlegar News Editor
All the ingredients seem to be present in The Apple Guy’s recipe for success: a favourite commodity that’s been around forever; one that’s grown relatively locally; and one that carries a reasonable price tag. Erran Rilkoff can also reap the benefits that come with a straightforward business name and a choice, standalone location perched in Ootischenia across the highway from the airport and gaming centre, part of the Doukhobor Discovery Centre complex. Rilkoff brings in apples by the regular truckload and the quality and value are compelling. “I moved in on January first and we got started in the second week of January,” the merchant described recently. “We expected it (business) to be fairly slow for the first few months, but it’s been very good… very well received. The community is starting to find us here.” As time goes on The Apple Guys’ attractions grow, various vegetables are finding their way into the store, soon to be joined by assorted bedding plants. Major work is planned for the grounds, as Rilkoff explained.
“We are going to put in some sort of agriculture soon. At this point we’ve got to rework the ground, put in some cover crop, get the weeds under control and then plan to have fencing up… because it’s definitely elk country here.” The operation consists of Erran, helped out a lot by his parents, one recently-hired employee and more to join the effort as the summer progresses. Rilkoff ’s mission statement is a simple one: “Local produce, he says. Potentially in the future I might have some Alberta product, but right now it is B.C. only, concentrating on Okanagan and Grand Forks products. I’m looking for farmers in the Castlegar area… Slocan Valley... to try to supplement the produce we sell.” Rilkoff says he isn’t pushing the organics as much as others. “I’m certainly going to be selling organic produce, but I’m mostly interested in selling local and trying to keep it cost-comparative.” Also serving the Nelson market, The Apple Guy, has been is open along Highway 3A Thursday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. “We’re adding Tuesdays and Wednesdays,” concluded Rilkoff, “... now the bedding plant season is going.” Photographers name: None Usage info: None

Mother’s Day
Spring is back and with it the joyful sounds of laughing, playing kids. Bikes, basketball and general playground action are sure signs that children are having healthy fun at this beautiful time of year. Activity is positive, particularly as far as kids are concerned, because recent reports continue a trend showing that not enough youngsters are getting enough exercise. The Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology suggests a daily dose of at least 60 minutes of vigorous physical activity. Many children, sadly, fall short of that goal. Why not sign your child or children up for something physical (organized sports or otherwise) this spring and summer… soccer, baseball, swimming… cricket… there are plenty of choices. Freida Rubletz, Regional Manager, Jumpstart Programs Greater Toronto Area, Canadian Tire Jumpstart, explains that in addition to the physical benefits, organized play also helps to:
Pictured during last year’s BBQ fundraiser are, from left, Castlegar Canadian Tire Dealer Bob Saari, General Manager Nick Ahlefeld and spouse Jennifer Ahlefeld, Jumpstart Chair Kerry Saari, and Lisa Gregorini of Exeter, Ontario. File
“As important as physical activity is for our young people, the reality is that one in three families in Canada can’t afford to enrol their kids in organized sports or physical activity programs,” continued Rubletz. “Charities like Jumpstart remove some of those financial pressures so all kids can have the opportunity to get in the game.” Dealer Bob Saari of Castlegar’s Canadian Tire outlet, and business partner Kerry Saari have given enthusiastic support to the Jumpstart program since 2005, in that time channeling roughly $72,000 toward the effort, according to Kerry Saari who told the Castlegar News on May 2, “Our focus is still children between the ages of three and 18. The goal is just to get them outside and active in some kind of July 16, 2011

community sport. “We’re pleased to be able to help.” Saari estimates an average of 90 local kids per year have benefitted directly from the Jumpstart program. Help bring back play in your community this May by supporting the Jumpstart Red Ball campaign. Head into your local Canadian Tire, Mark’s, Sport Chek, Atmosphere or National Sports store and donate $2 in exchange for your own Jumpstart Red Ball, representing the gift of play you are giving to a deserving child. One hundred per cent of your donation helps kids in your community. A Portrait of a Godly Mother
“And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could not longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, ... and put the child therein; and she laid it ... by the river’s brink.” – Exodus 2:1-3 In all of Israel’s long and colourful history, filled with hundreds of famous and infamous names, perhaps none stands as high to the Jew as the name of Moses. This one man left such an impression on not only his country, but the world that his name is still a household name around the world today. He was the great deliverer and law giver; he went to God on behalf of the people and to the people on behalf of God. Yet it is interesting that Moses was born at a time when the king of Egypt decreed that every male child born into a Hebrew home was to be killed. Were it not
Bible Truths Pastor Tom Kline
for the faith of his mother, Jochebed, Moses would not have survived. This illustrates the powerful position of a mother. Moses was born in a place where false gods were worshiped, cruel dictators ruled and God’s people were treated with disdain. Everything seemed against his ever knowing and serving the true God, but He had one thing going for him – a godly mother and that was enough! When Moses was plucked from the river by the daughter of Pharaoh she hired Jochebed to nurse him and act as a nanny for a time. Jochebed’s time with her son was brief yet clearly she started him off in a direction that would later in life guide him to become a great man of God. Proverbs
22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it”. As a slave in Egypt, Jochebed was not able to provide many material things, but she instilled something far greater – a strong faith in God. Clearly it took great faith on her part to put her son in a basket and place him in the river. She had to do something very difficult but something every Christian mother eventually must do; commit their child’s future into God’s hand. Like Moses, I had a Godly mother who influenced me for God. Dear Christian mom, may I encourage you, stay faithful, pray for your children, and raise them for the Lord; your example is not lost on your children! Friend, if you have a mom who raised you to love God and honour the Lord, you should thank God and if she’s alive, thank your mom too.

A story of inspiration is part and parcel to a fundraiser happening at the Old Castle Theatre on May 9. Central to the
storyline is Sofeya Devji – a teacher working with blind and visually impaired students in School Districts 8 and 20, who works tirelessly fundraising for student trips. She helps to enrich
their lives by taking them skiing… they paint works of art, last year a trip to Bamfield, etc. Sofeya truly thinks outside the box – the communities are so lucky to have her. The feature for this event at Castlegar’s iconic movie house is: “Blindsight” a film that follows Erik Weihenmayer and his team attempt to guide six blind Tibetan teens to the top of the 23,000 foot Lhakpa Ri located on the north side of Mount Everest… a part of the world that practically cornered the market on jaw-dropping scenery. The fundraiser also features short presentations by students about their experiences with the KPA-VI program. Take in an unforgettable cinematic event (suggested donation of $15) and help to perpetuate a truly valuable program. Doors open at 6 p.m., showtime is 7 p.m.

Tea and jewellery to be served ‘Grassroots Gramma’ style
Running a business or nonprofit that makes revenues (social enterprise)?

The Slocan Valley Grassroots Grammas invite you to an afternoon tea event featuring Kazuri Jewellery on Sunday, May 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. at a beautiful home in Vallican. The event was so popular last year — with this dazzling jewellery beautifully displayed, tea in real china and those lovely little sandwiches with the edges cut off, not to mention visits with friends at the riverside — that the African jewellery quickly sold out. The Grassroots Grammas have brought in a much larger selection this year, because so many people want to support the women making the jewellery and the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grans to Grans campaign. Each bead in an earring, bracelet, choker or necklace has been handformed from local clay under excellent working conditions by one of the 350 women employed by the fair trade Kazuri company in Nairobi, Kenya. These mothers and grandmothers are often the sole breadwinners for extended families. This lovely jewellery gives twice in that a percentage of the sales goes to the not-for-profit Kazuri company, then the rest, along with all proceeds from the tickets and donations go directly to the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign to support grassroots projects run by and for African grandmothers raising children orphaned by the HIV/ AIDS pandemic. The connection made between the Kazuri company and

the Stephen Lewis Foundation Grandmothers’ Campaign has resulted in well over $685,000 being raised since 2007 by small groups like the Nelson Grans to Grans and the Slocan Valley Grassroots Grammas. If the idea of sipping a beverage beside the Little Slocan
River in the company of friendly people, joining in solidarity with women in Africa and possibly finding a perfect spring gift for yourself or someone else appeals to you, please mark your calendar for May 25 and join the fun. Tickets for the afternoon tea are being 4.3”advance x 4” sold in by
Grassroots Grammas members for $5. When you purchase your ticket, you’ll find out the secret location of the event. If you require a ticket, call Linda at 250-226-7304 or Brenda at 250-2267661. Kazuri jewellery items are priced between $15 and $50, and will be available for cash or cheque.

People still not calling before they dig the repairs. Before you put your shovel into the ground, FortisBC encourages you to call BC One Call at 1-800-474-6886 (or *6886 from a mobile phone) or visit bconecall.bc.ca to get upto-date information on the location of underground pipes and wires. The service is completely free and could save you money. “Whether you’re planting a rose bush or installing a new fence, it’s important to call or click before you dig,’” says Ian Turnbull, Damage Prevention and Emergency Services Manager at FortisBC. The next step is following safe digging practices such as hand digging and avoiding the use of

Springtime marks the unofficial start of gardening season across British Columbia. It’s also traditionally the time of year when utilities such as FortisBC see a spike in the number of calls to repair damage to their underground natural gas pipes. According to FortisBC, 99 per cent of the damage to its natural gas system is caused by third parties such as construction crews, contractors and homeowners. Even the smallest damage could require thousands of dollars of repair work and force FortisBC crews to shut down service to other customers in

The Selkirk College Saints have announced the addition of Steven Glass to its hockey program starting in the upcoming season. The 20 year-old Saskatoon native, (6’1”-175 lbs.) has most recently competed as a member of the Nipawin Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, compiling a record of 10-8-0 with a pair of shut-outs in 20 games, posting a goalsagainst average of 3.36 with a save percentage of .907. Prior to his Nipawin arrival Glass had earned kudos with the Estevan Bruins, with whom he earned Top Rookie and Playoff MVP honours following the 2011/12 campaign. “Steven is an athletic netminder who gives us another great option in goal alongside James Prigione,” says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois. “He brings a lot of success from a very competitive Junior A league in Saskatchewan and we’re very excited about his potential to develop into a top goaltender in the BCIHL.” The young athlete will enroll in Sel-

kirk College’s Rural Medicine program as means of achieving a career as a doctor. Touting consistency and rebound control as strong points, Glass looks forward to his next challenges. “Academically, I’m shooting for a 3.8 GPA. Athletically, my goal is to progress with the team as we look to capture a third straight championship,” says Glass, who also knows how to look at life’s lighter side. “I’m looking forward to experiencing the college hockey atmosphere, developing under a great program, and living somewhere that isn’t completely flat.”
Saints’ coach Dubois says Glass “… will look to help fill the void between the pipes left by the graduation of Chris Hurry who was named the BCIHL’s Top Goaltender in 2013/14 while setting league-bests in wins, GAA and save percentage. Glass joins forwards Ryan Edwards (Beaver Valley, KIJHL), Jamie Vlanich (Nelson Leafs, KIJHL) and Connor Beauchemin (Castlegar Rebels, KIJHL), as well as defencemen Curtis Toneff (Campbell River Storm, VIJHL) and Danny Vlanich (Surrey Eagles, BCHL) in making commitments for the 2014/15 season.

CLEAN BETWEEN Independent Dental Hygiene Clinic
EMBRACE YOUR ORAL HEALTH April was Oral Health Month, which aimed to remind us all that good overall health starts with having a healthy mouth. Dental hygienists from across Canada also celebrated National Dental Hygienists Week TM from April 6-12th. During the month of April many dental hygienists reached out to their communities delivering oral health presentations to local schools, community centers and support groups. The theme for 2014 was “Oral Health for Overall Health”. In addition to volunteering their time in the community, dental hygienists make this theme a part of their everyday practice. Dental hygienists believe that a person’s outlook on their oral health really can have an effect on their overall health and happiness. Hygienists practice in a way which enables a thorough assessment, diagnosis and treatment of oral health conditions. Some of the ways this is achieved is by updating and reviewing your medical history at every visit. This not only ensures your safety is being looked after but it also provides your hygienist the opportunity to educate you about any links between your oral health status and systemic disease. Routine oral screenings are also completed by your hygienist to check for any sores or lesions in or around the mouth that could be a sign of systemic disease or a precursor for oral cancer. Dental hygienists work with a varied number of health professionals besides dentists, including massage therapists, speech therapists, physicians, dieticians and denturists. Through the provision of therapeutic, educational and preventative procedures dental hygienists aim to promote overall wellness.
but more has changed in the profession of dental hygiene in the last few years than over the past several decades. Nowadays, dental hygienists practise in various settings, ensuring the public can access oral care services. Dental hygienists can be found working in traditional dental offices, working in public health, long term care facilities and as educators in dental hygiene schools. In 1995, BC became the first province where the legislation changed to permit dental hygienists to own and operate their own practices. Today, there are approximately 3400 registered dental hygienists in BC which includes roughly 35 independent dental hygiene practices. Independent practices offer dental hygienists the opportunity to work according to their own beliefs and interests, says local independent hygienist, Denise Pawlyshyn. Denise opened Clean Between in Castlegar 3 years ago in part because she recognised that it’s not just the dental hygiene treatment that makes being a hygienist rewarding. It’s also the relationships that develop with the patients. Due to her flexible scheduling she has the time for conversation and a few good laughs while providing quality dental hygiene care. Dental hygienists are compassionate and devoted primary health care providers that focus on the prevention of dental disease. Prevention is an important aspect of your overall heath so remember to brush at least twice a day and floss the teeth you want to keep!! Good overall health starts with a healthy SMILE so call your dental hygienist today!
Dental hygiene has been a recognized health profession in Canada for more than 50 years
